TRAVEL GUIDE NORMANDY

Mont St Michel The abbey is a Romanesque and Gothic masterpiece of design and a phenomenal work of architecture, with underground crypts and chapels that were built to hold up the huge church on top. Building first began on the Mont in 708 when a sanctuary was created in honour of the archangel and the abbey church was completed in the early 1000s, a feat constructed at 80m above sea level. It became a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages and pilgrims would walk up the 900 plus

steps on their knees as a sign of penance. The Mont can even be seen on the Bayeux Tapestry from 1066. After holding out against the English during the Hundred Year's War, the abbey was later used by the atheist government of the French Revolution as a prison for priests who refused to renounce their vows. It was restored in the 19th century and is a beautiful place for some quiet reflection with incredible views across the salt flats of the bay of Mont St Michel.

Port-en-Bessin

Between Le Touquet and La Baule, only one golf club features two 18 hole courses. Just 3 miles from the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach is also a historic place which evokes respect and emotion. Two exceptional courses which can't be missed: one which runs down to the sea offering breathtaking views of the Channel before moving through the countryside, the other which looks down on the Manoir du Baron Gerard before challenging you with a series of lakes.

COUTAINVILLE GOLF COURSE Agon-Coutainville The golf course at Coutainville lies between the sea and the countryside, close to both the town centre and the beach. It has 14 holes laid out as links, and another 4 holes amongst hedges. The course contains a number of hidden traps, in particular its very subtle par 3's surrounded by bunkers. There are also water hazards, including a new one at the 9th hole constructed in 2011, which all demand precise stroke play while being aesthetically pleasing.

This 27 hole parkland course is surrounded by forests with superb, open views of the Seine estuary. Half the course is in the valley, while the last nine holes are on beautifully landscaped higher ground. The magnificent timber framed clubhouse is a former 18th century cider brewery and offers a warm welcome to all visitors.

GOLF CLUB DE L’AMIRAUTÉ Built on a former stud farm and designed by Bill Baker, the superb course at l’Amirauté is a unique marshland course with long water hazards, wide fairways and large greens. It boasts top quality undulating greens and is set in a gently rolling rural landscape. just a few miles north of the city. Laid out, like many of the new generation of French courses, by English architects (Fred Hawtree in this case) in the early 1990s, Caen is an interesting combination of hills and woodland which makes it particularly picturesque in the autumn.

You could almost be at Augusta, although this wonderful championship standard course, Golf Club de Champ de Bataille, is amongst the most beautiful in France and has also been compared with Wentworth and Woburn.

GOLF D’ÉVREUX In the heart of the Normandy region, halfway between Paris and Deauville, the UGOLF d'Évreux, designed in 1994 by the architect Jean Pascal Fourès, offers a natural setting to allow everyone, young and old, to enjoy or to get in touch with golf.

woodland on the edge of Deauville. There are magnificent views across both the town and sea, and although not long, the numerous dog-legs and tight fairways demand accuracy from the tee.

GOLF DU VAUDREUIL Conveniently located between Evreux and Paris, Golf du Vaudreuil is a flat, mature course. Designed by Hawtree, the fairways wind through magnificently preserved parkland planted with a variety of trees where accuracy off the tee is essential.
