oo long in the tourism wilderness, Northern Ireland is at last being rediscovered and recognised as a wonderfully attractive destination, especially for golf. For so long a no-go area for visitors, it is discarding the battleground image and replacing it with something altogether more appealing. Having three world-class major champions – Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy – has evidently raised Northern Ireland’s golf profile. As well as great golfers it can boast that among its 100 or so courses are some of the finest in the world. Since nowhere in the country is more than a couple of hours by car from Belfast, all are comfortably within striking distance. Just south of the capital is the sleepy seaside town of Newcastle. Squeezed between the mighty Mourne Mountains and the Irish Sea, its popularity peaked in Victorian times when the railway brought holidaymakers escaping urban grime. The fabulous sandy beach that stretches for miles is its principal attraction behind which lies one of the top ten golf courses in the world, Royal County Down (pictured left).

Royal County Down

To many, the Championship course (there’s another called Annesley Links which is strictly for the fainthearted) is simply one of the best courses on earth. Tom Watson said,

TRAVEL GUIDE NORTHERN IRELAND

Royal County Down

“It is a tremendous test of golf and the outward half especially is as fine a nine holes as I have ever played.” It’s quite simply spectacular. There are towering dunes, wonderfully elevated tees, a sprinkling of blind shots, true but terrifying greens, long par fours comfortably out of range for the average hacker and a massive amount of trouble including great clumps of heather, grisly gorse and penal rough. When you’re not searching for your ball, you can either look up to the magnificent Mountains of Mourne or out over the beautiful Dundrum Bay. Royal County Down’s serious challenger for the title of Northern Ireland’s number one is another sensational links course, Royal Portrush. Right up on the northernmost tip of the country, Portrush is another quaint seaside town that grew up in Victorian times. Like Royal County Down, Royal Portrush is blessed with two courses.

The Valley course is set amongst the same dunes and has its loyal supporters but it’s the Dunluce course that sends golfers into uncontrollable shrieks of delight. It has many claims to fame, not least as the first (and last) course outside of Great Britain to host this year’s Open championship. The only other time was back in 1951. Because the dunes are a bit further back and the terrain isn’t as intimidating as it is at Royal County Down, the Dunluce course appears to be a bit wider and more forgiving than it is in reality. Although it doesn’t look too tough, the rough is a great deal more punishing than it appears. And with the ball bouncing unpredictably off the humps and hollows, you’ll spend more time off the fairways than on. A little further west along the northern Atlantic coast about five miles west of Coleraine on the banks of the River Bann is lovely Castlerock. Like

so many of the great links courses, it even has a little railway running alongside. Founded in April 1901, the original course comprised nine holes and was laid out on the western part of the present course. A round at Castlerock will test every department of your game. The 200 yard par three signature 4th hole, called “Leg o’ Mutton”, requires a tee shot struck over a burn, with a railway track lurking to the right. Great courses offer great closing holes and the short par four 18th at Castlerock is no different. Even with a good drive on this slight dogleg, due to the contours of the fairway, you are often left with a relatively blind approach to a tricky plateau green. Graced with the natural beauty of its peaceful setting and the views that surround it is the Club’s underlying pursuit of excellence that keeps this place a sacred retreat for the truly ardent follower of golf.

The course is set in classic links country amid towering sand dunes and views of the Donegal hills, the Atlantic and the River Bann. The first hole with its elevated tee, dogleg to the green and sandy strip on the right, is considered the best opening hole in Ireland. For something less challenging, the Riverside Course stretches from the clubhouse down to the River Bann. ROYAL COUNTY DOWN Royal County Down is located in the naturally beautiful links setting of the Murlough Nature Reserve, where the links stretch along the shores of Dundrum Bay. Narrow ribbons of fairways thread their way through sand dunes surrounded by heather and gorse – so beautiful but also punishing! The famous ‘bearded’ bunkers feature overhanging lips of red fescue and heather. The greens are fast and many are domed, rejecting any shot lacking conviction. The 9th hole is one of the most photographed holes in golf. Golf writer Bernard Darwin described the course as one of “big and glorious carries, nestling greens, entertainingly blind shots, local knowledge and beautiful turf – the kind of golf that people play in their most ecstatic dreams.” Royal County Down is was voted the no. 1 in world (Golf Digest) for 2016 and 2017. THE PLAYLIST: NORTHERN IRELAND ROYAL PORTRUSH The Dunluce Course, re-designed in 1947 by Mr. H.S. Colt and later in 1951, became host to the first ever Open Championship held in Ireland. During the entire tournament only two golfers managed to break 70. It’s easy to see why; the greens are scattered among huge sand dunes gently raised above the Antrim Coast providing vistas of sea, cliffs and islands. Portrush’s most celebrated holes are the 5th hole and the 14th. The par 4 5th, White Rock is one of the most exhilarating two–shots in golf. Over hit the second shot, and your ball disappears into the Atlantic! The aptly named 14th hole, ‘Calamity’ requires total precision to carry the ball over an enormous ravine. Mis-hit this one and you could be taking your next swing from at least fifty feet below the hole. Is it any wonder that Golf World magazine regularly rates Portrush in the world’s top twenty golf courses? Founded in 1888 and having just delivered one of the greatest Open Championships for years the legendary Royal Portrush Golf Club has two Championship Courses – the renowned Dunluce Course, where Darren Clarke plays while at home, and the smaller but equally enjoyable Valley Course, where Graeme McDowell, former US Open Champion, learnt his golf at an early age.

BALLYCASTLE GOLF CLUB Founded in 1890, Ballycastle Golf Club is a founder member of the Golfing Union of Ireland. Despite modest beginnings, on a local area of sandy turf known as the Warren, the original nine holes opened in 1891. By 1926 the final layout was created and the current 18 hole course has remained largely unchanged to the present day. The course ‘clubhouse’ prior to 1901 consisted of a wood and corrugated iron hut. Over the years a fully functioning clubhouse was developed up to 2003 when the clubhouse was rebuilt and extensively modernised, providing excellent golfing facilities for both members and visitors. The outstanding panoramic views of Glenshesk and the North Antrim Coast may force you to take your eye off the ball more often than you would like. THE PLAYLIST: NORTHERN DOMINICANIRELAND REPUBLIC ARDGLASS GOLF CLUB Situated on the south-east coast of County Down, Ardglass is unquestionably one of the most spectacular courses in Ireland, having won the Irish Golf Tour Operators Association Best Links Course of the Year Award Oct 2011. The dramatic layout of the course with several tees and greens overlooking the ocean gives it a really rugged feel. It is part links, part cliff-top in nature. The course meanders its way out to a headland, then winds its way back, along the way offering some of the most thrilling play bar none. The first five holes are truly memorable and run right alongside the sea. Bring plenty of spare golf balls! LOUGH ERNE RESORT Designed by six time Major winner Sir Nick Faldo, Lough Erne is his rst golf course design in Ireland. It will be no surprise that water comes into play a lot at Lough Erne, no less than 11 holes, and this is best tested at the tricky par 4 10th. Whilst being the 2nd shortest par 4 on the card, it is fraught with trouble, both off the tee and on your approach shot to the green. It takes an extremely accurate second shot as you are hitting into an island green, surrounded by Lower Lough Erne on the left, right and back of the green. Situated behind the 9th green, you would be well advised to stop at the Halfway House for a light bite before tackling the ‘Emerald Isle’ 10th. CASTLEROCK GOLF CLUB Castlerock Golf Club lies approximately 5 miles due west of Coleraine on the North Coast. It’s a fabulous links course set among rolling sand dunes. Its scenic qualities embrace the river Bann owing, the eye-catching views of Donegal and, on a clear day, Scotland and the Isle of Islay. The Championship Mussenden Course is a pure seaside routing with firm fast greens and an intimacy with the landscape. The best-known hole is the 4th, called the Leg o’ Mutton, a 200 yard par 3, with a railway line out of bounds to the right, a stream which cuts across the fairway diagonally and a raised green. Even closer to the sea is the 9 hole Bann Course, which contains a par 5 described as, “one of the most scenic holes in Irish golf.” This superb 27 hole layout should be included in every golf itinerary. Its present site of Ballydrain Estate is 330 acres of wooded parkland just 5 miles from Belfast. The site boasts 27 holes made up of Ballydrain, Drumbridge and Edenderry nines. The rst two usually make up the main course but the Edenderry is great for young and new golfers to enjoy the game. The centrepiece of the course is the natural trout lake extending for some 27 acres. The plentiful mature trees shape many of the holes with the lake coming into play on the 13th. ROYAL BELFAST GOLF CLUB In the summer of 1881 Thomas Sinclair spent a holiday in St. Andrews, Scotland. He was totally smitten by the game of golf and persuaded the Laird of Holywood to generously give his land free of rent at Kinnegar, Holywood for a golf course. The present course dates back to 1925, when H.S. Colt, the eminent English course architect, assisted by Walker Cup player W.A. Murray, produced a course of great charm which provides a true test of golfing skill and enjoys one of the most scenic settings with its unrivalled views of Belfast Lough. The course remains much the same today as it was then, a tribute to the enduring excellence of its original design, with impeccable greens. Visiting players are always warmly welcomed to enjoy a real slice of history.
