ow! This has been fun! We may have the best jobs in town. We are very fortunate that we get to create products that tell great stories about the Birmingham region. We are very grateful to the many clients who are participating in this book. We believe EXCURSIONS— A Guest Directory will bring new focus to and great interest in the many unique businesses, events and attractions that our region offers. Birmingham has long been a very well kept secret. We live well, eat well, play hard and enjoy some of the most beautiful natural surroundings found anywhere. Well, folks, that secret is safe no longer. It took a small village of talented individuals to pull off this first edition. To those professionals who contributed their time and talents I extend my sincerest gratitude. One talented person in particular who deserves a special mention is Tim Kilgore. Without Tim’s incredible sense of design, patience and attention to quality, this book would not have been possible or as beautiful. I’d also like to thank Mr. James Smither, President of The Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau and his staff for their support and encouragement to make this book happen. I am a lifelong resident of the Birmingham region. I’ve been fortunate to travel the world and I am proud to call Birmingham home. Please use this book as a resource to discovering the many things we Birmingham residents love and appreciate.

Safe travels and many returns,

Basically, it’s the place where everything important that I’ve ever done has happened in my life. People talk about artists from Birmingham who never gave the city its due. The most important thing Terry taught me is it doesn’t matter what producer you’re using, at the end of the day it’s all about making the best music. If you don’t think that song will be around 50 years from now you shouldn’t do it. So that’s what we did with this new album, we made sure every song is something people can listen to when I’m 75 years old. I’ve been praying about it, and I believe God is really going to bless this project, because we have put the hard work into it.

RS: It’s been exciting, but it was a huge undertaking for me in the beginning. I had a mental block about being good enough to do something like this, even though I sing well and people know me. But this is a totally different beast. Something that every performer fears is being unprepared, and I felt like I wasn’t prepared enough to do it. But I tell you man, I’ve really proven a lot to myself in the past few months. It’s been fun tackling a new challenge, and it has given me the strength to do new things. I don’t think I’ll ever be close-minded to another opportunity like this again.

RS: Green Acres used to be one of my favorites before I stopped eating meat. I love Mrs. B’s on Fourth, it’s a soul food restaurant. Thai Emerald Restaurant on 280 is great. Olexa’s CafÊ in Mountain Brook, her grilled cheese sandwich is outstanding. Bellini’s on Highway 119 is great. One of my favorite chefs is Aaron Saturday, he has a cafÊ in Mt. Laurel called Saturday Gourmet CafÊ. He’s awesome, he catered my wedding. And CafÊ DuPont, I can’t forget that, and Bottega CafÊ.

RS: Of course everybody has a goal at the beginning of the year to get healthier, so that’s a goal. I always want to push myself to achieve more success from the year before. And to be a better husband, father, and family guy for everybody around me. You can never stop growing and trying to become a better person, and that’s something that I strive to do. 7T g]c U]b b] ^WQY O bVS[S a]\U T]` bVS QWbg ]T 0W`[W\UVO[ eVOb a]\U e]cZR g]c ^WQY-

ooler temperatures in the summer after brief afternoon showers and unusually warm winter days, added to outstanding weather in the spring and fall months, make Alabama year-round a fantastic place to be outdoors. Birmingham and the surrounding suburbs offer golf on a variety of public golf courses. You may have heard of the state’s Robert Trent Jones golf trail, but within Birmingham limits and just beyond there are several public courses worth visiting. The state’s oldest course, Highland Park Golf Course, was opened in 1903 and lies just on the edge of downtown. Ballantrae, a Bob Cupp designed course, is located off I-65 in Pelham, as is the Oak Mountain State Park course, repeatedly named by Golf Digest one of the top 75 courses in America. Eagle Point Golf Course is another source of city pride, with it’s tree-lined Bermuda fairways and pristine setting. In Bessemer, enjoy the indoor/outdoor state-of-the-art practice facility at the Bent Brook course, and just south of the city in Calera, Timberline offers a semi-private course laid out by U.S. Open Champion Jerry Pate. Each facility offers its own blend of special amenities and signature course design, but all have the same mission. From verdant natural beauty to calming water features to the friendliest of locals, Birmingham’s public golf courses are dedicated to showing visitors a truly great game of golf.

JESS BOURGEOIS Cocina Superior’s cuisine brings the best of both worlds: time-honored Tex Mex favorites such as handmade tamales and chile relleno and innovative modern dishes such as shrimp and crab stuffed avocados and chargrilled oysters-to one restaurant served fresh from the open kitchen each day. This concept gives customers an opportunity to experience the traditional Tex Mex dishes done right while venturing out to experience some inventive dishes that are uniquely Cocina Superior. If nightclubs are your scene, there are a few to choose from. Our Place and The Lakeview Yacht Club are Birmingham’s premiere gay and lesbian venues, and Level Two is a brand new nightclub to the city - located off Highland Avenue, open since the end of February 2009. If you are a cocktail connoisseur, stop by Little Savannah Restaurant & Bar on Clairmont Avenue for a post-dinner drink from their classic and contemporary cocktail menu or join the locals at the bar at Highland’s in Five Points South for original drinks like the beloved Orange Thing or a glass of pastis. Both Sol y Luna’s Margaritas and The Wine Loft’s extensive by-the-glass lists are very popular on weekends and weekdays, and if you love Martini’s, The Blue Monkey on Cobb Lane in Five Point’s South has over 150 kinds of liquor and a

wickedly long Martini list. Birmingham’s darkest dive bar, The Nick, was once called “the CBGB of the South” by Rolling Stone magazine, and The Oasis in Lakeview and Metro Bistro downtown are both extremely popular spots for shooting darts and catching a variety of local and regional acts. Hoover offers Gabriel’s Cafe, which also showcases live bands, Wine’d Down, which has a cigar room, and also Iron Horse, where you can shoot pool while listening to live Country Western.
