omething we hear time and again from first time visitors to Birmingham is that they didn’t realize what a beautiful setting we’re in. With the foothills of the Appalachians as a dramatic backdrop, the city is laid out on a series of lush rolling hills, with woodland-covered neighborhoods just minutes from downtown. That this Southern city has its own cosmopolitan character is another eye-opener for tourists. It’s hip without being pretentious. It’s tuned-in without being pushy. It’s very cool without the exertion. The city has become a regional destination alone for its upscale restaurants. Internationally-renowned chef and Alabama boy Frank Stitt made a name for himself years ago with the opening of Highland’s Bar & Grill, one of Gourmet magazine’s top choices for dining in the entire country. Yet anyone visiting the city should also take great delight in fine Southern cooking as well. No one wants to leave without a meal of catfish, fried okra, sweet fresh corn, tomatoes ripened on the vine, cornbread (made without sugar, please), all topped off by deep dish dewberry
4
cobbler—hot—with a dollop of ice cream. The art we hold up as fine talent is varied as well. Birmingham has become quite the colony with recent openings of dozens of new art galleries offering folk art, fine art and funk art. In addition, thousands of visitors to the Birmingham Museum of Art each year leave town marveling, “I had no idea….” Shopping opportunities are yet another surprise. The area’s antique shops are becoming places of legend in upscale lifestyle magazines around the country. Awesome pieces still can be found at reasonable prices, especially on the main drag in the Birmingham suburb of Homewood. Trendy malls have taken root all over the area, creating a huge retail surge in our charming burg. On the other hand, Birmingham’s downtown has its own shopping personality, with shops selling discontinued china, old-fashioned hardware stores and record shops, especially Charlemagne Records, just for the ambiance. Diversity is this city’s greatest strength and strongest appeal. We are a spectrum of attitudes and cultures—all a part of your delightful encounters in Birmingham.

25 years of growing together By Ben Cook, Lindyssports.com

ince 1983, college football has enjoyed unprecedented growth. Television and the money it pours into college football is the driving force behind the growth. Games are now played in ever-expanding stadiums with several on-campus facilities topping over 100,000 seating capacities or are in the process of expanding to that magic figure. It is rare when a college game is not on television, either the traditional networks or one of the many cable outlets, such as ESPN, which is the cable giant of the college football industry. The millions of viewers each week are usually gathered in groups to watch or sitting at home alone where the fan can scream at the officials, the coach, or the 20-year old who fumbles at the wrong time. But one thing they have in common is food. Nobody watches college football and doesn’t have something to eat and drink, not to mention the thousands more who tailgate at the stadiums. And nothing goes better with watching a football game at home than pizza. It is as traditional as turkey at Thanksgiving. And that’s where another industry comes into play—Papa John’s, started a little over a quarter of a century ago in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in a broom closet in Mick’s Tavern. When John Schnatter was a high school student, he made an observation. He noticed that when he and his friends ordered takeout pizza, they weren’t getting the quality of pizza that he wanted. So he decided he would try to fill that 16
void. John’s father owned Mick’s Lounge in Jeffersonville and he allowed John to clear out an old broom closet in the back of the lounge for his base of operation. In 1983, John sold his prized car, a 1971 Z28 Camaro, to help keep his and bought $1,600 worth of used restaurant equipment and started making pizzas for his father’s patrons. The pizzas were so popular John soon moved his growing business out of the broom closet and into an adjoining space. It was the start of an empire that has grown as fast as college football. It was the original Papa John’s Pizza. In 1984, John Schnatter opened the first fullscale Papa John’s Restaurant. It was the same year that saw a college football milestone, one that helped the sport become a staple of the television industry. Late in that season, Miami and Boston College met in a highly publicized match. With Miami on the verge of victory, Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie pulled the play of the year. As time ran out, Flutie avoided a Miami rush and flung a 65-yard pass for the Miami end zone where BC’s Gerard Phelan came down with it for a spectacular 47-45 win. Flutie became the first player to pass for 10,000 career yards and he took home the Heisman Trophy that year. As Papa John’s grew, so did college football. Throughout the rest of the 1990s, John
Schnatter’s dream of delivering a superior-quality traditional pizza to the customer’s door was taking shape. Papa John’s Pizza was becoming an established name in the area. The next step was also taking shape: expansion. It has been an unrivaled success. The final decade of the 20th century saw college football continue to grow, both in dramatic exploits on the field and in growth off the field as universities discovered the revenue stream that could come from increased seating, especially in the area of luxury boxes that deep-pocketed alumni would pay dearly to enjoy. The decade started with one of college football’s most embarrassing mistakes. On October 6, 1990, the Colorado Buffaloes were mistakenly given a fifth down and they scored a last minute touchdown to beat Missouri, 33-31. Colorado went on to an 11-1-1 record and an Associated Press national championship, but the polls were split. United Press Internationals gave its championship to Georgia Tech. Two significant events took place on the football field in 1992. The Bowl Coalition was formed as a way to help determine the national championship. The Bowl Coalition was in place for the 1992-94 seasons and gave way in 1995 to the Bowl Alliance and eventually the BCS. The second significant event of 1992 had a decidedly bigger impact on college football. The Southeastern Conference had expanded to 12 teams, divided into East and West divisions and took advantage of a little-known NCAA rule that allowed a conference to hold a playoff game for any league with 12 members. The first SEC Championship Game was held at Birmingham’s Legion Field with Alabama beating Florida, 28-21, and advancing to meet No. 1 Miami in the Sugar Bowl. The SEC Championship Game was a financial windfall for the SEC and soon other conferences would seek to follow the SEC’s lead and stage a playoff game. Television became an even bigger player in college football in 1993. ESPN’s College GameDay, a pregame show on ESPN that featured Tim Brando, Lee Corso and Beano Cook, had been airing since 1987, but in 1993 the decision was made to move the show to an on-campus site each Saturday. The idea took off and the show itself became almost as popular as the broadcast of the games. Today, you know your game is special when College GameDay is on your team’s campus.
In 1998, as a testimony to the success and growth of Papa John’s Pizza, Schnatter donated $5 million to the University of Louisville for naming rights to the new football stadium for the Louisville Cardinals. Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium seats 42,000. In 1999, Papa John’s Pizza was rated as number one in customer satisfaction among all national pizza chains in the American Customer Satisfaction Index. It was the first time Papa John’s was awarded that honor, but not the last. Papa John’s has won every year since. The growth of Papa John’s Pizza has mirrored the growth of college football. The following year in 2000, Schnatter was inducted into the Louisville Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame. In the early 2000s, college football’s national championships were spread around. Oklahoma won the title in 2000, Miami in 2001, Ohio State in 2002 and LSU in 2003. Also in 2003, Schnatter was awarded the Kentuckian Award by the Happy Chandler Foundation. In 2006, Papa Johns joined an elite list of blue-chip companies across the nation that stepped up and solidified its support of college football by becoming the title sponsor of the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham. The bowl is in its fourth year and matches teams from two BCS conferences, the Big East and the Southeastern Conference. In 2007, Papa John Schnatter became the second Kentuckian to be inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame. The other is Col. Harlan Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame. As the first decade of the 21st Century is winding down, college football has never been more popular. The same can be said of Papa John’s Pizza. Today there are more than 3,400 restaurants in 50 states and 28 countries and each specializes in delivering a superior-quality pizza to the customer’s front door. Papa John’s has been voted “Best Pizza” in more than 50 United States markets over the past several years, including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Dallas, Indianapolis, Orlando, Knoxville and Phoenix. In January of 2010, Papa John’s Pizza is celebrating National Football Month, which is only natural. Nothing goes with pigskin like pizza and nothing says pizza like Papa John’s. (This is a condensed version of the complete story that appears in the Papajohns.com Bowl souvenir program.)

At I-459 and U.S. 280. www.thesummitonline.com
This well designed shopping area just south of the city houses a great independent bookstore, Milestone Books, along with fine places to eat such as Panera Bread and Sekisui Japanese & Sushi Restaurant. Also in the complex are Stein Mart, Publix and Starbucks. Hwy. 31 South in the heart of Vestavia. www.vestaviacitycenter. com
The booming suburb of Trussville includes two large shopping areas with a third scheduled to open in October. Target, Books-a-Million, and Old Navy anchor the mall on U.S. 11. A second shopping area occupies both sides of Chalkville Road, just after the first I-59 Trussville exit, with a Wal-Mart and cinema on one side and a Kohl’s anchoring the other. The third cluster of shops is the Pinnacle Shopping Center, located behind Target and anchored by Belk and Best Buy. www. colonialprop.com/propertyinfo/?cid=1267
Western Hills Mall
A landmark in the western section of the city, the recently renovated mall stores include Burlington Coat Factory, City Gear and Mr. Burch Formal Wear. The omnipresent WalMart Supercenter is next door to the mall. U.S. 11 at Aronov Drive.

“Best Little Pork House in Alabama”TM
Voted One of the Top 10 Barbecue Restaurants in the U.S. Expert Reviews by
city guides
Gayot.com
“The sauce at Full Moon is just right: not too spicy, not too sweet. Add a scoop of tangy chow chow and the barbecue chicken plate is a treat. Or try Full Moon’s rib sandwich, available in three sizes, from one to three ribs. The one-bone makes a great snack, but heartier appetites could go for the four-bone rib plate with a pair of sides. Smoked pork, turkey and brisket (from Black Angus) are options to consider. Collard greens and mac ‘n’ cheese would make good accompaniments. Dessert should be required, especially the chocolate chip cookies half dipped in chocolate. All desserts are made in-house, including the carrot cake and the pies. Beer is available.” Published by Gayot.com 7-17-09
