SINCE THE LAST EDITION OF THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED, the Birmingham area has experienced a tremendous explosion of new restaurants and a new entertainment district. As a result, our restaurant section in this book has expanded significantly this year! Local entrepreneurs continue to invest in Birmingham and continue to help make it a mecca for unique cuisine and varied culture. We are also benefiting from more of our young movers and shakers staying in Birmingham and shaping into a city we are all proud to call home. One of these local movements, spearheaded by a small group of passionate Birmingham-centric artists and professionals, is the campaign to paint beautiful murals in every neighborhood in the city limits (of which there are 99). CityVision, Inc. is proud to be Kickstarter backer of the mural project that was completed just prior to this book being published, a block and a half from our offices in Lakeview. The new mural boasts this time-honored, locally grown message “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham.” There are two other murals in other neighborhoods touting this message. Please be sure to read Jenny Adams’ article about the Magic City Mural Collective. This is also my opportunity to thank the many advertisers and professionals who come together to bring you this publication. We are also honored to feature some new photographers and designers this year. Mr. Barry Mitchell helped meld my photographs to create our most unique cover to date and Mr. Jonathan Purvis provided most of the images for Jenny Adam’s article. My sincerest appreciation goes to the many advertisers who believe in the power and reach of this publication. I strongly encourage you to assist me in thanking them by visiting their places of business and letting them know that EXCURSIONS led you to their doors. LOCALBHAM.COM is our new mobile website for this publication. Take advantage of the new EXCURSIONS mobile profile pages we created for each of our advertisers. VINTAGE VISUALS ONE GROUP OF ARTISTIC CITIZENS IS TRANSFORMING THE LANDSCAPE OF BIRMINGHAM by JENNY ADAMS

I

f you traveled to Birmingham by plane or Greyhound bus in the 1950s, you alighted to giant, painted signs that read: “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham.” The same was replicated on bumper stickers, buttons, novelty license plates and even leaflets left on cars indicating a parking violation, with a simple warning instead of a fine. The slogan actually caused a bit of tension in the following decade, when it became somewhat ironic. As horrible racial issues plagued the city, this statement was discussed on national news stations and in speeches by key civil rights activists. Today, a group of locals are working hard to spread that exact message again, celebrating their city’s modern reputation as a great place to live and a wonderful place to visit. The Magic City Mural Collective is a group of artists and design-

ers, armed with paint brushes and a strong sense of hometown pride. They’ve brought the slogan back into the city’s popular culture once more, by painting it several feet high in two locations in town. Another one, completed just prior to the printing of this article, decorates the side of the Trim Tab Brewing Company and may been seen from Red Mountain Expressway. “Our friends at Yellowhammer Creative began putting that old slogan on t-shirts and selling them at local events,” explains Creighton Tynes, one of members of the Magic City Mural Collective, which formed in the summer of 2013. “We loved it so much, we decided we wanted to make a bigger splash and paint it somewhere. That sentence just captures people. It’s got a lot of history in this town, and so many people love the city of Birmingham. The sign represents both the old and the new.” The Mural Collective was commissioned to paint the side of a

large wall in the Woodlawn neighborhood at 55th Place and 1st Avenue in the fall of 2013. In July of 2014, the group partnered to paint the slogan again. This time the design included a skyline illustration and it appeared on the side of the legendary restaurant John’s City Diner in downtown. “We’ve gotten artists, designers, photographers…generally anyone that wants to help create…involved,” Tynes explains. He’s a full-time employee at a furnace manufacturing company. Merrilee Challiss, who owns the local restaurant/bar/music venue, Bottletree, is also a key founding member of the group. “Birmingham has been undergoing a much needed self-reappraisal over the past few years, working to change its identity and move forward from the past,” says Challiss. “I think for the longest time, those of us growing up here felt like we were not supposed to be proud to come from Birmingham, Alabama, because of the history. Our goal is to actively change the perception of our city and help to heal our divisions. Over the past year, we have seen a huge interest in what we are doing/trying to do. People are really on board so far. We have more work than we can handle.” There are now eight steady members, all ranging in backgrounds and talents, with a common desire to create large art with a purpose. They also get the community involved in these artistic endeavors. “We definitely have a process now, and it’s amazing to see all the people who want to be involved,” Tynes says.

tasks. The older students did some technical painting and adjusting proportions and cleaning up edges, so it doubled as a learning experience. We had helpers ranging from 7 years old to 40. We paid the regular citizens for their time. Everyone’s time is valuable.” Now, Trim Tab Brewing has enlisted the artful skills of the Magic City Mural Collective. A Kickstarter page was created to help raise over $9,500 towards the fourth

mural. It’s been met (CityVision, Inc., the publisher of this book, even became a backer) and the group finished this one in late 2014. “The It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham slogan will be about 80-feet-by-10-feet high,” says Trim Tab Brewing CEO Harris Stewart. “You’ll be able to see it while traveling north on Highway 280, and it will be a greeting for millions that pass through the city.”

Where some might think it’s simply going out and painting on a blank wall, the process is actually much more complicated. The group has to meet with neighborhood design review boards, as well as carve out the time in creation and actualization. Then there’s liability insurance, website infrastructure and accounting services to contend with. “A single project might require 150 hours and over two weeks,” explains Tynes. “We pay anyone who comes out to work with us an hourly rate too. We budget for that, because we want their efforts recognized and rewarded.” One of the most rewarding projects was the group’s mural at Oddo’s Sav A Stop grocery in the Smithfield neighborhood. They joined forces with the students at the nearby Parker High School for a few days in April of 2014. It wasn’t the same slogan. This time, their mural read: Dream the Unthinkable. “The children helped design it, and then they came out to help us paint,” Tynes says. “We gave them a very wide variety of

For Stewart, his aim has always been to embrace the younger generation of artists in the South, and every two months, a rotating collection of art lines the walls inside the taproom. While this giant mural project is a permanent, larger installation for the outside of his building, the idea is the same. “The mission of our company is to celebrate small sources of big change,” he says. “I think this slogan and this collective embody what the attitude of Birmingham is right now. There’s a big surge in the younger demographic looking at the past as something not to be shied away from. They realize this city’s history is something im-

portant to acknowledge, and they are taking responsibility for the future.” For the Mural Collective, they want their efforts to spawn future creations, so they are setting up a strong foundation underneath the young company. “We are making a modest profit off these types of jobs,” offers Tynes. “We want to reinvest into the city. If we make $1,000 off one, then we can go and paint another $1,000 mural. Our whole goal is to try and fill the city…the 99 neighborhoods…with murals.” Right now, the collective has another 16 projects in discussion. It’s exciting how fast these visual feel-good messages are popping up around the city.

KATIE THOMPSON

“Who knows what this group will look like in six months,” says Tynes, “but we are developing partnerships with businesses and talking with neighborhood boards. When you drive by a sign like this on the highway, we are hoping you see that message and that it does something for you emotionally. Thus, it does something for the city overall. “The wavelengths of the paint on the wall can reach out and help people. Woodlawn is transformed. Parker High School is transformed. We are hoping the entire city will be transformed.” For more information, follow them on Facebook or see mcmcbhm.org.

Avondale & Forest Park

A

recent multi-million dollar public-private effort to completely renovate historic Avondale Park spurred young entrepreneurs in Birmingham into action to begin reclaiming and reinvigorating a landmark Birmingham neighborhood. Saw’s Soul Kitchen was the first restaurant to move in and has garnered recognition of its own for their delectable creations and melt-in-your-mouth barbecue. Pioneering this neighborhood makeover was a refurbished office space and then a brewery. But not just any brewery in the eyes of those who live here—Avondale Brewing Company is now also one of the most frequented event locations around.

26 EXCURSIONS

Garden & Gun and Southern Living have both done several articles and mentions about this neighborhood, the brewery and the other businesses that are moving into this area. Forest Park, just adjacent to the Avondale area, is one of Birmingham’s oldest and most prestigious neighborhoods and is home to several high-profile locally-owned businesses, too. Little Savannah Restaurant & Bar is the anchor fine dining spot for this area known for their downhome hospitality and farm-to-table culinary inventions and housemade craft cocktails. A perfect area for windowshopping, there are also places to find art, vintage and consigned clothing, accessories and art.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Richly detailed exhibits in the Civil Rights Institute reveal slices of black and white life in Alabama from the late 1800s to the present. A series of galleries tells the stories of daily life for African-Americans in the state and the nation and how dramatically different it was from the lives white people of that era took for granted. The powerful Movement Gallery presents the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 to 1963. Here, a picture emerges of the bad old days of “Bombingham,” a reference to the relentless violence that rocked the city in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue and is considered one of the most memorable works of civic art in the United States. Created by Italian artist Giuseppe Moretti, Vulcan was cast from local iron to represent the state of Alabama at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Vulcan has overlooked Alabama’s largest city from atop Red Mountain since a 1930s WPA project created his permanent home and namesake park. After decades of exposure to the elements, by the 90s, the 50-ton statue was in desperate need of repair. Recognizing Vulcan’s importance to the region’s history and persona, community leaders formed Vulcan Park Foundation, a nonprofit organization which oversaw a $16 million project that returned the statue to his 1904 grandeur. The meticulous restoration of Vulcan and his 124’ sandstone pedestal, completed in 2004, received numerous awards including the highest honor awarded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Embracing the personality of the community Vulcan symbolizes, the park grounds and museum offer a dynamic edu-taining experience. No longer an industrial giant, Birmingham’s new “magic” is in the thriving arts community. by H E AT H E R A DA M S

irmingham was nicknamed “The Magic City” at the turn of the 20th century due to its almost overnight emergence as a powerhouse in steel and iron manufacturing. The city thrived on the sudden influx of people and commerce. As with any new and bustling city, it did not take long for an active community of arts to form and grow strong. The steel and iron business may have faded, but although Birmingham is no longer an epicenter of the industrial movement, it has established itself as a quite a leader in the realm of visual and performing arts. And while the nickname, “The Magic City,” originally described Birmingham’s industrial prowess, it has come to accurately describe the city’s long-reaching influence on the arts. Merriam-Webster lists “magic” as a noun described as “an extraordinary power of influence seemingly from a supernatural source,” as well as “something that seems to cast a spell.” Birmingham does indeed cast a spell on patrons of the arts, ranging from theatre to music to film. Entranced audiences will have the chance to be anything, anywhere they had ever dreamed. home as you visit the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Samford Theatre, Birmingham staples that date back to the 1920s. If you find yourself drawn to independent arts movements, take a trip through the Theatre District in downtown. Here

you will find the Red Mountain Theatre, Terrific New Theatre and the Theatre Downtown, each of which boasts origins from an almost phoenix-style rising of new art from the beloved traditions of the past. Wander through the Sidewalk Moving Pictures Festival or

come to the Cabaret. For a more mainstream show, take a drive south of Birmingham and enjoy the Verizon Wireless Music Center which has hosted acts ranging from Rascal Flatts to Kings of Leon and the Dave Matthews Band. Moreover, in Birmingham, the arts form a true community with each guild and theatre enmeshing themselves within the cultural and educational spheres of the city. The Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center is located on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Birmingham Festival Theatre performed its first original piece on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College, whose stage mirrors that of William Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, as the Alabama Ballet hosts their four annual productions at Wright Theatre on the campus of Samford University. And the Library Theatre is aptly titled, since it is housed inside the Hoover Public Library. The Virginia Samford Theatre and the Red Mountain Theatre both have intertwined past lives with Birmingham’s famous “Town and Gown” productions, while the Alabama Symphony Orchestra answered the city’s need for music after World War II. A guided tour through Birmingham’s performing arts venues will certainly make anyone a believer in the magic this city has to offer. Those who know choose Birmingham for visual and performing arts. OCEAN

A

chance to pull up a chair at Ocean in Birmingham is an opportunity to enjoy the south’s best seafood in one of its best settings. The domain of chef and proprietor, George Reis, Ocean is sea-to-plate, focusing on the bounty of the waters in a sustainable way—with a heaping side of Southern charm and cheese grits, of course. Reis admits he’s only a small part of a booming restaurant scene in Birmingham. “When I opened 13 years ago, there were about four or five really amazing places to eat in the city. Now there’s a

plethora,” he says. If you ask around, however, you’ll quickly notice he’s a cornerstone in a movement to put this town on the map for fine dining and sustainable food. His passion for food found solid footing at culinary school in upstate New York, and Reis went on to sharpen his skills in Atlanta for eight years, followed by cooking in Dallas for a spell and on the Gulf Coast. Landing finally in Birmingham, he had the opportunity to check out a shuttered restaurant in the city’s historic heart—Five Points South—around 2000. In 2002, he opened it as Ocean—focusing on regional, coastal cuisine prepared simply with elegant, elevated sides and a fantastic wine and cocktail list.

“It’s strange because there was really a niche that needed to be filled in this town in terms of a fine-dining seafood place,” Reis continues. “I think we went after that, but the demand is continually growing, and it’s certainly become more than what we expected.” The design inside seats 100 comfortably, with a main bar that curves around the center, creating a bit of action and drama for guests. “People gravitate to our bar,” explains Reis. “You can see the kitchen behind it and it’s a focal point.” The menu keeps guests returning, with up to 15 varieties of raw oysters and seasonal plates like seared halibut with a corn crème, fava beans and trumpet mushrooms. He has noticed a recent popularity in whole fish and is plating up several, keeping his regulars in mind with certain items that will never be taken off the menu. One of the biggest sellers is his Maine lobster tails, which may be ordered either as an appetizer or entrée. You can’t miss with any of the sushi rolls either!

eorge Reis, chef and owner of Ocean (featured on page 56), isn’t so obsessed with fish he can’t see the benefits of the farm. That thought was the impetus of the Ocean’s neighboring restaurant and bar, 26. “We opened 26 based on demand,” he offers. “People aren’t coming to ocean for lamb. They go there for fish. I do a braised pork cheek that I love, and… well … I couldn’t do that at Ocean, because it wouldn’t sell. In 26, we created a space and a menu that is a bit more eclectic. 26 buzzes with a certain tangible energy you can feel in the air and taste on the plate. From the LED underlit concrete bar to the bright, wave-motif walls to the metal “waterfall” curtain, the mood here is vibrant and humming. A quick glance around the dining room of 26 reveals a remarkably diverse crowd. While twenty-somethings laugh and live it up at the bar, their friends are doing the same in the dining room, next to tables of baby-boomers, businessmen and girlfriends out for a night on the town. The menu at 26 is inspired by every

place touched by the sea. And while seafood is a big star, George enjoys the opportunity to create some amazing dishes for landlovers. 26 also serves up one of the best kept secrets in Birmingham—it’s burger. The fish wrap ith homemade pickled veggies is also a popular favorite among locals for lunch. “At 26, you can’t beat the citrusbraised short ribs,” Reis says. “But the hidden secret on the menu is definitely the HB American Cheese Burger — a Southeastern Farms dry aged Angus beef burger topped with bacon and served with truffle-scented fries.”

The menu at Bistro V is seasonal and changes every two weeks, but the tried and true favorites

And what is that one dish that will never leave the menu? “The short ribs, most definitely. We serve up a lot of those!” Originally from Bayou La Batre, Louisiana, Chef Jeremy Downey combines his Lousiana heritage and his wide exposure and training in the

culinary arts to his Vestavia Hills bistro. Seafood is what Downey enjoys cooking the most and his dishes are infused with influences he garnered growing up in the bayou. Most locals came to know Downey when he played on the 1992 National Championship Football Team for The University of Alabama. He still wears his championship ring with great pride. Shula’s Steak House is the classic American steakhouse; a fine dining, white linen steakhouse themed after the 1972 Miami Dolphins and their perfect season; the only team to finish 17-0 in NFL history. In order to be the best, Don Shula followed the same principles that made him the winningest coach in football history: select the best talent available and give them the resources they need to succeed. In the restaurant business, that meant serving Premium Black Angus Beef steaks, the very best cut of beef, and providing restaurant teams with the best training. At Shula’s they have the strictest guidelines for their custom center cuts and aging process which makes the award-winning Shula cut…the best beef in the industry. Coach Shula brings his “winning edge” approach from football to his restaurants for a legendary dining experience. Recipient of the 2014 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence

Rogue Tavern is the perfect blend of restaurant and bar. We have daily specials that are sure to please along with our fresh and tasty crowd-pleasing vittles. Lou’s Pub & Package Store 726 29th Street S, Birmingham, AL 35233 205.322.7005; louspub.com Lou’s Pub & Package Store, founded in 1987, is a neighborhood bar with a “Cheers” feel and they also sell liquor! Loved by all who enter, Lou’s Pub is known for its diverse clientele and colorful bartenders. Esquire magazine named Lou’s Pub one of the “100 Best Bars in America!” Although Louis Zaden, original owner, has had his “last call,” the new proprietor, Michael Carpri, is keeping old traditions alive and well—service matters! “Sit down, shut up, and drink!” The staff here says, “the only time you should get out of your seat is to pee or greet a friend.” With a full line of quality high-end spirits, So many reasons to “Meet at Lou’s!” Church Nights: Angel and Eric mix up high-end, craft cocktails Wednesday and Sunday nights. The cocktail menu changes monthly based on the season’s freshest ingredients and the bartenders’ moods. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday let Mike and Miss O take care of you. He’s forgotten more about drink making than most of us will ever know. Miss O can find you our best cigar and has a story about every bottle we sell.
