Food waste to clean energy

Climate Change “Food Waste”

Garbage trucks are one of the least efficient vehicles on the road. Powered by diesel fuel, they average just 3 miles per gallon. Fueled by diesel, this equates to 9.9 kg CO2e per mile.

CLIMATE CHANGE SOLUTIONS

CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION PLAN

Climate change is undeniable according to 97% of scientific studies. It is believed that CO2 concentration levels in excess of 400 ppm will result in catastrophic consequences. We have just surpassed this level.

Strategies to combat “Climate Change” by reducing pollution have been adopted by most first world countries, including Canada. The use of biomass has been identified as a carbon neutral energy source and is one of the new alternative energy platforms the world has stated is necessary to combat “Climate Change”. Eco-Growth Environmental technologies fit perfectly with the global “Climate Change” objectives and are both simplistic and cost effective. Canada, per capita, is the most wasteful country in the world, Eco-Growth plans on changing our wasteful habits by converting organic wastes into cleaning burning energy. Significant carbon emission reductions are achieved in the way of avoiding landfill pollution (methane gas which is 23 times more potent than CO2) and reduced use of hydrocarbon energy (natural gas and diesel).

Food Waste to clean Energy

ORGANIC WASTE IN LANDFILL

Commercial compost produces significant methane emissions and is not considered purely aerobic.

COMPOSTING MAY NOT BE THE BEST SOLUTION Attainable Market Share 10%

Compost / Landfill 5.1 million tonnes

Many Municipalities have mandated organic wastes be diverted from landfills. The most commonly accepted solution has been converting waste into commercial compost.

THE ISSUES WITH COMPOSTING o o o o

Offsite composting involves hauling wastes that are 80% water which is very inefficient. Rotting food waste generates significant odours and attracts flies and vermin. Large outdoor compost operations generate significant methane pollution which is 23x more potent GHG than CO2. With City residential compost operations the economic value of commercial compost is greatly diminished affecting the viability of commercial compost operators. Up to 30% of all commercial compost is contaminated with harmful pathogens such as e-coli which is transferred to the food chain.

Biomass when used for energy generation is considered carbon neutral.

Case Study GHG Emission Comparison of Biogenic Combustion Versus Commercial Composting THE FACTS Windrow Compost compost emits 125kg /tonne of CO2e methane Biomass Combustion emits zero methane

Communities seeking to reduce the tonnage of waste going to landfill and reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions have started to roll out comprehensive compost programs. It is believed that commercial composting offers the best bang for the buck when it comes to CO2e pollution reduction. However, new studies suggest this may not be the case. A German study has concluded that significant methane (CH4) emissions occur during composting. Methane emissions rise with increasing pile size, and with increasing amounts of food waste.1 Converting organic wastes (food waste) to usable biogenetic energy appears to offer improved GHG emission reduction when compared to commercial composting.

CO2 Emissions Both composting and combustion produce CO2,however they are both considered carbon neutral Trucking Emissions The GHG associated with collection, transport and maintain a windrow compost operation involves is significant

Biomass is a globally accepted Alternative Energy solution for combating global climate change. Students can learn more about the new low carbon economy through the Alternative Energy Lab at Red Deer College RDC. Curriculum based studies are offered by RDC which feature a hands-on learning centre equipped with EcoGrowth waste-toenergy technology.
