Nestled into the land on three lots totaling more than five acres, and secluded like no other home, the unassuming exterior of 8315 Valhalla belies the magnificence inside. Up the driveway and around the corner, the hidden entry is heralded only by the tall, floor to ceiling glass door, which teases visitors and offers a peak into the architect’s genius. Connected to the mountain with large windows, three distinct buildings are knitted together by glassy links that together with clean, well-crafted wood detailing, render a light, airy, simple contemporary architecture that is warm, comfortable and inviting. “Every window offers a gift” the owner noted with rapt appreciation.
Photography by
Architect Earl Wilson of BAR Architects in San Francisco sat with the land for over eight hours, designed and submitted the plans to the owners who “didn’t change a thing…we loved it immediately… it was perfect at first glance and is perfect now. Earl designed a beautiful house and Jones Corda built it with the quality it deserved.”

Martis Camp Home Tour 2014
Approach and enter through the tall glass door and catch glimpses of natures beauty. Turn to the left and ascend the stairway to the guest wing. Three bedrooms and a living suite are served by an ingenious bath and private laundry. To the right of the entry the pavilion-style living, dining and kitchen areas offer a large but cozy environment. The floor to ceiling Sierra Woods doors open the 14-person dining table to mountain air and nature views…lighted at night by a custom John Pomp light fixture. The kitchen features teak cabinetry with stainless countertops but the show-stealer is the oversized kitchen island, lovingly nicknamed a “continent,” which brings everyone together for pizza making and baking in the wood-fired pizza oven. Built-in furniture masterfully seclude the kitchen appliances from the dining/living spaces.
Return to the living level where the master wing awaits. Spectacular views and private access to the outdoor hot tub, as well as a master bathroom with soaking tub, indoor and outdoor shower, oversized his and her walk in closets make this master suite enviable. Additionally, the home office inspires creativity and an ability to enjoy the mountain scenery in a tranquil setting. Colors, materials, and exquisite design all package this home into the Martis lifestyle, a quiet statement of mountain and family bliss.
The lower level offers a bright and comfy living space, game area and children’s zone: two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, one for use with the outdoor hot tub. The girls’ rooms hold their own magic. Each room has its own sleep-over bunks for guests, its own bathroom which has a secret mirror/window to allow a fresh air view, and the disappearing wall between the bedrooms inspires spontaneous pajama parties.
Architect: BAR Architects Builder: Jones Corda Construction Interior Design: Lotus Bleu 6,884 sq.ft. ⁄ 6 Bedrooms ⁄ 5 Full Baths, 2 Half Special Features: Guest loft sitting room, loft office and glazed entry at large pine tree.

Clean lines and indoor/outdoor living characterize this Tahoe Quarterly award winning home. Open to the Carson Range, Ted Brobst of Ward-Young Architecture designed this 4,600 square foot Martis Camp residence: a stunning example of contemporary mountain architecture, the definition of which combines comfort, warmth, privacy and community.

panels seamlessly connect the indoor living spaces to the outdoor spaces. Designer Martine Paquin worked with builder and architect to balance the earthy palette of wood, stone, metal and glass with clean surfaces, textures and materials. Noting the pliability and possibility offered by concrete as a building material, Martine says, “So many different textures, patinas and finishes are possible.” Produced by Oakland’s Concreteworks, the fireplace surround and cantilevered hearth form the centerpiece of the great room and the chocolate hued concrete floor and stair treads are just a few of the concrete fabrications in this home.
Every detail was visualized and built by Gabe Shacter, of Mountain Craft, with outstanding quality and craftsmanship. Between Brobst, Shacter and Pacquin, the joy and ease of the team’s synergy is evident in the ability of this home to stand within the land, honoring human craft and nature simultaneously. Parts of this piece originally appeared in Tahoe Quarterly Magazine.
With gleaming white Caesarstone countertops, the open kitchen features rift-sawn cabinetry and white leather banquette snuggled into the outdoor view. At the top of the stairs, everyone is invited to be dazzled by Carson Range views from the rec room walls. Abundant daylight can easily be concealed by draperies which emerge magically from a recess in the wall, turning the rec room into a movie theater. Also on this level, three guest suites and master bedroom continue the soft, clean design of the home. High, horizontal windows and a skylight in the Master Suite allow ample daylight to pour onto the creamy white concrete and discrete built-in cabinetry, and the marshmallow-like white concrete soaking tub, all of which creates an ethereal, clean and uncluttered stillness of a luxury spa.

Step through the custom entry door and relax, grounded by the welcoming Cisco Grove slate and custom inlaid ironwork foyer. Weathered barn wood trim and beams add rustic touches to this mountain home.
Gaze forward and be drawn into the living spaces of the home by nature views through the two-story wall of windows which showcase patio and fire pit. The home features extensive patios, both open and covered. Inside, family revelry reaches new levels in the expansive, sunken open-concept living space secured by magnificent hand-scraped variable plank walnut flooring and two-story fireplace. Architect Nick Sonder commented, “I personally think one of the coolest features is the large moveable wall that allows for an expansive great room or a more private (large) media room off the great room. It provides great entertaining flexibility.”
The chef’s kitchen surrounds an oversized island comprised of three surfaces: butcher block, concrete and a live-edge plank that defines the seating and dining area. The pantry door becomes a gleeful message board adding a touch of enjoyment to the beautiful spaces. From the living area, ascend a few steps to the powder room. This sequestered area of the home gives privacy to the Master Suite which opens onto its own covered balcony. Two more ensuite bedrooms await family and friends. The second level of the home is a kid’s paradise. The oversized bunk room is located just beyond the media/sitting room with interior balcony to the lower level.

The beautiful half arch of this home not only signals the entry but directs attention toward the heart of the residence. The owners love this home for its ease of living, “We were surprised and excited to share our home with Excellence in Education for the home tour.”

“We tried to mix traditional mountain forms, such as the steep roof pitches, shed dormers and covered front porch with more contemporary and edgy accents such as the curved roofs, clear cedar siding, concrete, and steel detailing,” says Architect Ryan Marsden.
Ascend the stairs to the second floor living area. A banquette with game table, a computer station/office space and a rich and cozy theater overlooking the great room separate the guest master suite from the children’s bunkrooms. Both the boys’ bunkroom suite and the girls’ bunkroom suite make this home the perfect getaway for family and friends. Builder Kevin Hanna of Greenwood Homes said, “This home was a true pleasure to build. The home features ample natural light and dramatic living spaces that organically flow into one another. I love that the home is a blend of modern design and rustic raw materials; it really has an easy elegance about it. Not many homes can achieve dramatic sophistication and still feel homey. Keith Kelly’s design and the craftsmanship of this home make it a project I am proud to have built.”
The great room’s soft, rich furnishing with plenty of space for a large group opens to views of the putting park, nature and soaring pines. Inside the floor to ceiling fireplace becomes an additional focal point, with a television discretely hidden for occasional family viewing. To the right of the entry, the master suite awaits. This private sanctuary features a floor to ceiling stone wall with a fireplace that leads the eye to the exquisite barrel vaulted ceiling and indirect lighting. Beautiful wood, stone and steel construction with magnificent joinery is one of the signatures of a Greenwood Home. The master bath, with its unique granite and stone tile work, shower and soaking tub share an equally restful view. To the left of the great room, is access to the outdoor kitchen as well as a beautiful half bath, mudroom, laundry, and garage access to the bear proof trash enclosure.

“It was always my dream to live in a home designed by my architect father, and now we are living that dream. We love the functionality and features of our home and are delighted to share it with Excellence in Education.” — Owner of Home 295
TIM ERSKINE
Whereas most mountain homes emphasize the ruggedness of Truckee’s mountain environment, this home, through designed synergy of material and color, points to the softer side of life in the Sierra Nevada. Steel, stone and wood knit together inside and outside and serve as the background for full-time residents to raise their family. Strong horizontal lines focus attention and ground it, and are accented by a soft, arched roofline.

living area features a surprising and beautiful view of Concert Lake and Lookout Mountain. The Clear Western Red Cedar ceiling flows to the outdoors from the living space through the window wall that opens for full-time indoor/outdoor living – featuring an outdoor fire pit that spans the length of the back deck. For contrast and interest, the fireplace wall is Western Red Cedar and the flanking cabinets are walnut. Concrete floors on the first level connect dining, first-floor guest suite, living area and kitchen. They are cool underfoot in summer and radiant heated in winter. Another surprise on the first level is the kitchen. It expansively opens to reveal two large islands and sleek, minimalist cabinetry. A signature feature by Consulting Architect Ron Todd is the window placement. Many windows are strategically placed to maximize the view and light, while maintaining privacy. Each bank of windows has its own set of remote control sunshades; there is even a switch that will turn off all the house lights and close
the sunshades. Covered outdoor grilling is easily accessible from the kitchen, just past the breakfast/ game table and the home office/craft room -- both adjacent from the kitchen. Laundry, laundry chute, pantry and half bath make this space efficient and enjoyable for full-time living. Ascend the stairs to discover one of the family’s favorite parts of the home, the Vista Room. “We start and end our days here,” said the owner of this cozy space. A fireplace, faced by cork wallpaper and steel, warms the family in the cool nights…the view from here is private, personal and spectacular. The master bedroom is an oasis that is not far from the children’s rooms on this second story private family space. “Vivian thought of everything, even placing a wine and candle shelf to the side of the soaking tub, and the view is spectacular.” Artwork, from the family’s travels throughout Africa and Southeast Asia, complement the soft neutral color palette throughout the home. Living their dream while raising their two young children the owner commented, “We worked with an incredible team and we couldn’t be happier with the results. We moved from our ‘starter home’ in the Bay Area and when we had the opportunity to build our dream home in Martis Camp we jumped on it.”

If, as Goethe is quoted, “…architecture is frozen music,” this home is a magnum opus. Nearly two years in the design phase, and completed in late 2013, it is used nearly every week by the family and their guests.
Large walls of Wieland doors open to showcase the spectacular views of Lookout Mountain and provide access to the many, multi-leveled outdoor living areas and spa fitted with therapeutic jets for a relaxing day after outdoor activity.
Low sweeping lines drawn by custom steel beams, magnificent cedar and custom framed Sierra Pacific windows hug the view tight to the earth in direct contrast to Lookout Mountain. The home is further grounded by the six-inch thick basalt stone, which was artistically placed according to the owners’ design request.
Just beyond the main entry, the sunken living room is defined by custom sofas and basaltfaced fireplace and filled with custom seating, custom barrel chairs, rug and lighting.
Enter through the five-foot wide rift sawn oak door, the weight and smooth operation of which creates a quiet pause.
The room features banquettes, sofas and an artfully designed wet bar crafted with copper, steel and an exquisite custom painted finish. Artwork in the living, dining and kitchen areas are showcased atop lighted built-in pedestals. A private wine room and the owners’ private offices are just steps away.
Inside, the rich, deep color scheme adds warmth to the interior but also allows contrast to the bright freshness of the North Lake Tahoe mountain lifestyle.
The home uniquely positions the owner’s wing to the left of the residence and a guest wing with a carport and separate entry on the right.
Martis Camp Home Tour 2014
“Everything in this home is custom,” stated contractor Jim Morrison of Morrison Construction. Art, furniture--freestanding and built in--cabinetry and hardware are all custom; even the sinks in the Master Suite have been designed and fitted to resemble a single large piece of natural stone but are custom-crafted concrete.
The rift-sawn white oak cabinets support the granite countertops and surround the gently curving island of Caesar stone providing a raised bar area for casual dining. Just around the corner, the butler’s pantry serves family dinners or large gatherings equally well.
The visual musical symphony created by exacting standards of the design team design has beautifully created a home which inspires the owners to immediately slow the pace of life and create warm, memorable family times.
Just beyond the kitchen, the windowed staircase leads to the second floor master suite where large, sliding glass doors open the master bedroom to its own private, covered terrace with ironwood railings. For guests, a private wing includes three bedroom suites, a bunk room and a surprisingly large but very cozy media and family room, strictly designed for fun and relaxation. A dedicated laundry and ready room are located directly off the private guest entry and carport.

KEOKI FLAGG A L O O K AT TA H O E F R O M B E H I N D H I S L E N S Keoki’s stunning photography and inspirational writing beautifully translate what makes the Lake Tahoe/Truckee area such an extraordinary place in which to live, recreate and rejuvenate. One’s home should be that ideal refuge that embodies all that inspires you. We hope that, as our guest on the Home Tour at Martis Camp, you will enjoy this unique perspective of Tahoe/Truckee and experience the splendor of living in these mountains.
TA H O E M O M E N T E A S T S H O R E L A K E TA H O E 2 0 1 3 I hold my breath and feel the last rays of sunlight wash over me. This moment, so perfect, so true, fills me with gratitude‌ How I love my Tahoe home. The glassy waters reflect transitioning light on my idyllic retreat. The textures of water, granite, sand and wood shift my focus from one moment to the next, from day light to night. From season to season the diversity of Tahoe’s template is unmistakable and unique. It is incomparable with any place else on Earth. Each new day promises a new experience, a new perspective of this dramatically changing landscape. Lake Tahoe is always my reference point.
L A U N C H O V E R L A K E TA H O E S O U T H S H O R E L A K E TA H O E 2 0 0 8 I put myself in the middle of extremes and then I try to disappear, to not affect anything, but to see, feel and preserve everything. Every day I’m surrounded by opportunities to exercise this perspective, to have deeply felt experiences and to share the basic commonality that embodies the human spirit and my creative endeavor to define it. It’s unequivocally self-defining. It’s not about control or structure. It’s about being in the moment, and when I’m most in the moment, the most myself at my most unpredictable, The most like the momentary life I’m trying to capture, that’s when I achieve my best results; that’s when the magic not merely happens, but when I’m most likely to catch the light in the lens and trap lightning in a bottle.

CELESTIAL POND TRUCKEE RIVER 1998 Mother Nature equipped herself to light her world amazingly. The marvel of refracting, reflecting light filtered through an endless array of natural filters utterly captivates me. So often I am out there immersed, happy and absorbed in my mission, only to sense that there is something unexpected, unpredictable happening with the light around me. The first response is usually a full stop in awe. Then I become absorbed in quantifying why it feels so special. Inevitably, I shift from just feeling the light to trying to define what just changed, what shift caused it to feel the way it is now. Sometimes it’s obvious; other times it’s not. To visually share the purity of heartfelt emotion is my conviction and my purpose. It’s not about documenting what I see, but translating what I feel. Inspired by pure, human experience, I'm captivated by original form and drawn to define how things feel, and not solely emotionally…There is a tactile component to my best work. I’m fascinated by the paradoxical, occasional and individual harmony of vast scale and minimalism. It’s an unmistakable attraction to the fundamental and the essential.
T O TA L C O M M I T M E N T E A S T S H O R E L A K E TA H O E 2 0 0 6 I have spent over twenty years wandering the globe, discovering new perspectives, growing, evolving, living in the now and immersing myself in our world’s textures; that’s how and when my art is born. It obviously absolutely matters where I am, who I'm with and what I'm doing, that's why I go to such lengths at the far ends of the Earth, but, no matter, if I interpret my experiences with an original perspective and relevance, that’s how and when my art is the most true. As a photographer, I become a storyteller attempting to find, bare and explore the soul of my subjects; and as an artist, I search for original perspectives and steadfastly strive to cross the boundary of predictability in the hope of encapsulating timeless epiphanies. At my best, I strive to capture and to convey evanescence for eternity" in a way that is unique and ephemeral, yet universal and, somehow," timeless, tangible and real.

FLORAL BLISS HIGH SIERRA 2011 Life is a compendium of magic moments, and in the modern everyday whirlwind our challenge is, wherever and whenever we can, to be truly present and to breathe in the full depth of each and every moment. Once in a great while we find ourselves somewhere special at just the right time. In that space everything fades away and it’s impossible not to feel where you are. As I set up my tripod and camera, Sarah kicked off her shoes and submerged herself in the sea of wildflowers. Taffy ran here and there, sticking her nose into the earth and bounding around, forgetting her age. In every direction, intricately beautiful forms of color reached to the sky to celebrate this high mountain perch. There was no beginning or end.
