DYNAMIC LEADERS 2024

EDITORIAL NOTE

The need for leaders to share their unique stories cannot be overstated. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, the challenges faced by an entrepreneur or business leader are often the challenges faced by many. By sharing their experiences, leaders can foster a sense of community and solidarity among their peers. Their stories become a source of learning, offering insights into navigating the complex maze of modern-day business. They highlight the resilience required to overcome obstacles, the agility needed to adapt to change, and the vision necessary to drive innovation.

Moreover, these narratives have the power to inspire. They remind us that behind every successful enterprise is a human story, replete with moments of doubt, decisions that required courage, and milestones that called for celebration. They serve as a testament to the fact that success is not just about profit margins and market shares, but also about the values upheld, the cultures nurtured, and the positive impact created.

This is where Exeleon Magazine comes into the picture. By providing a platform for these leaders to share their stories, Exeleon does more than just chronicle business successes. It helps humanize the corporate world, making it more relatable and accessible to a broader audience. Transforming Dreams into Franchisee Companies

A Tale of Responsible Entrepreneurship

In the realm of entrepreneurship, one often faces pivotal moments that demand a leap of faith. For me, that moment arrived when I decided to leave a stable job, where I earned a guaranteed income of $600k and enjoyed high regard. The choice to embark on a journey of selfemployment, despite a tempting double salary offer, seemed audacious, especially with my wife eight months pregnant and relying on COBRA for healthcare coverage.

This gamble was not just about pursuing my dream but about inding the right business that could be franchised responsibly, scaling rapidly while maintaining integrity. My chosen path led me to

the power washing industry, a domain I knew little about but aligned seamlessly with my franchise checklist. By building a franchise around a single location's successful business model, we achieved remarkable growthexpanding to 128 units across 24 states within just 12 months.

This bold move not only transformed my life but also opened entrepreneurial opportunities for others, empowering them to take the leap into business ownership. What made this risk pay off was not just the speed of expansion but the impact we were making. I prioritized what I term 'Responsible Franchising,' ensuring

fairness and support for all involved. Today, we are more than just a successful business; we are a franchisee company, prioritizing the well-being of our franchisees above all.

Beyond personal success, I irmly believe in the fundamental role entrepreneurship plays in driving economic growth. Entrepreneurs are the architects of genuine economic expansion, creating job opportunities, fostering innovation, and stimulating market competition. By encouraging individuals to take the entrepreneurial lead, we contribute not only to our success but also to the prosperity of society as a whole.

AMarsha Stone

Leading the Way in Addiction Recovery

s the CEO of the Foundation Stone Family of Programs, Marsha Stone shares her personal journey through addiction and recovery, shedding light on the challenges she faced as a single mother of three while navigating law school.

As a leader in this male-dominated sector, Marsha also discusses the unique challenges and opportunities she has encountered in her leadership role. Through her candid relections and advice, Marsha offers hope and guidance to individuals currently facing addiction and mental health challenges, while outlining her future aspirations for the Foundation Stone Family of Programs.

Can you share a bit about your personal journey with addiction and recovery, especially during your time in law school and the challenges you faced as a single mother of three?

Relecting on my law school days as a single mom with three kids, I felt like I was

constantly in the eye of a storm. A glass of wine here and there seemed harmless at the time. Everyone around me was doing it, and I was trying to keep up with my studies while raising my kids. I didn't really know much about alcoholism, the genetics of it, or how stress and trauma could make things worse. I kept telling myself, "It's not a big deal. I'll get it under control once I'm done with school."

Before I knew it, I was caught in this cycle where any excuse was good enough for a drink, whether I was having a bad day or celebrating something. I didn't see the trap I was walking into until I was already in too deep, drinking daily and watching it mess up my work and my relationships with people.

My real wake-up call came after a series of tries and failures. Starting in 2002, it was like I was on this merry-go-round of treatment, detox, and then falling right back into it. It was rough, dealing with the shame and seeing how my struggles were wearing on everyone around me.

IN – FOCUS EXELEON MAGAZINE 32 | MARCH 2024
WWW.EXELEONMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2024 | 33

But something clicked in 2008. I was just fed up with the whole cycle and realized if I didn't make some serious changes, it was only going to get worse. That's when I decided to give the treatment another shot, and this time, it stuck. I haven't touched a drink since coming out of that last treatment, and while I'm super proud of how far I've come, it was just the start of a whole new journey for me in understanding and working within the treatment industry.

Talk to us about Foundation Stone Family of Programs. How did your experiences in the treatment industry shape the vision for this organization?

Foundation Stone began after I had a 10+ year career of developing programs for substance use disorder. Over time, my team and I began to recognize that mental health, trauma, personality disorders, etc., were becoming more and more prevalent in cases where someone was also suffering with substance use disorder. The term for this is co-occurring disorders, and over time we began to be more aware of the complexities, the clinical complexities of cases.

And when we made the decision to start a new program, we decided that from the very beginning we were going to collaborate more and not look at different diagnoses or different behavioral issues in a silo. I think it's important that as our understanding of substance use disorder and mental health continues to develop over time, that we become accustomed to evolving and updating our programs and our policies.

Being one of the few female CEOs in the recovery industry, what insights can you share about your experiences and challenges in this leadership role?

Navigating the male-dominated behavioral health industry as a female CEO has its challenges, but it's also opened a lot of doors that were once closed to me. It's so important for women to recognize their potential to lead, especially as personal experiences may uniquely position them to excel in certain areas.

My approach has been to stay true to my values and insights into business dynamics and relationships. The journey to leadership as a woman can be long and at times isolating, but inding and nurturing a supportive team is key. Building loyalty within these relationships is essential, as it can be tough being one of the few women in the room.

Relecting on your entire journey, what advice would you give to individuals currently facing challenges with addiction and mental health?

One of the main principles involved in the recovery process is honesty. Honesty can be especially dificult when you're dealing with intimate parts of your life and people close to you, because prior to recovery, most people spend a lot of time making excuses, delecting, or trying to hide their struggles from people that are up close and personal with you every day. So, to really begin to live a life that is based in authenticity and honesty and transparency, being able to be honest about your own desire to

participate in recovery, is something that I would recommend early on.

You also need to remember that your recovery and your sense of self is safe and supported, whether it is completely applauded by everyone. I think that the most important thing that I would suggest, based on the people who I have seen to be the most successful over time, is to ind a support system and process that works for you. There are as many ways to recover and as many ways to do relationships as there are colors in the rainbow. Some people that are in long-term

IN – FOCUS EXELEON MAGAZINE 34 | MARCH 2024

recovery never go to 12 steps. Instead, they go to yoga ive days a week, or they go to church, or run marathons. I'm not a person that would ever fault someone for inding a different path that helped them to get into recovery and to really have a better relationship with themselves and their families.

Having created the Foundation Stone Family of Programs, what are your future aspirations in terms of helping individuals struggling with mental health and addiction?

When we opened our Foundation Stone Family of Programs, we always knew that we wanted to be in the business of helping people. At both Amend Wellness and The Pearl, we continue to expand our services and evolve our offerings to include holistic practices and wellness programs.

Since opening last year, our Foundation Stone family has expanded, and the bonds we've formed with our clients, partners, and the broader community have become the cornerstone of our mission. We are eager to expand our network of programs to become

not just treatment centers, but a community dedicated to transformation and recovery.

Breaking Language Barriers, Boosting Global Business

The business landscape in 2024 is a crucible of dynamism. Exciting opportunities abound, but so do pressing challenges.

Technological advancements are rapidly shrinking the world, pushing companies to expand their reach beyond traditional borders. To thrive in this interconnected ecosystem, dismantling language barriers and fostering seamless communication across diverse cultures is no longer a nice-tohave—it's a necessity.

This year, several key business trends will converge, creating a ripple effect that intensiies the need for effortless communication across borders and languages. The irst is the widespread integration of AI. Next, a focus on skills development will be crucial for a changing workforce. Additionally, the rise of remote work models presents both opportunities and challenges for geographically dispersed teams. Finally, increasing

pressure to prioritize sustainability and personalize the customer experience for a global audience will further necessitate clear and effective communication across cultures.

AI INTEGRATION: A STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE

Artiicial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming industries, and the business world is no exception. In 2024, we can expect to see a signiicant rise in AI adoption across various business functions. From automating tasks and streamlining processes to personalizing customer experiences, AI offers a plethora of beneits. A critical aspect of AI integration for global businesses is its role in language translation.

Machine translation (MT) powered by AI has made signiicant strides in recent years, offering businesses a cost-effective and eficient way to bridge the language gap. However,

it's important to remember that AI is not a silver bullet. Human expertise in translation and localization remains essential, especially when dealing with nuanced cultural contexts and idiomatic expressions. Businesses should focus on strategically leveraging AI to complement human translators, fostering a collaborative approach that leverages the strengths of both.

FOCUS ON SKILLS: BUILDING A FUTURE-READY WORKFORCE

The future of work is rapidly evolving, demanding a workforce equipped with the skills to navigate an increasingly digital and globalized landscape. In 2024, businesses will prioritize skillsbased hiring over traditional degree qualiications. This shift relects the growing importance of soft skills such as critical thinking, problemsolving, and communication—all of which are crucial for effective collaboration across cultures.

WWW.EXELEONMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2024 | 39

Furthermore, as digital luency becomes a baseline requirement, the ability to leverage technology tools for communication and translation will be a valuable asset. Businesses can invest in training programs that equip their employees with these essential skills, fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation.

THE EVOLVING WORKPLACE: EMBRACING FLEXIBILITY AND WELL-BEING

The concept of a traditional 9-to-5 workday is quickly becoming a relic of the past. The rise of remote work models presents both opportunities and challenges for businesses in 2024. While remote work offers numerous beneits, such as increased employee productivity and a wider talent pool, it can also lead to communication silos and hinder collaboration across teams, especially those in geographically dispersed locations.

To address these challenges, businesses need to invest in robust communication tools and strategies that bridge geographical divides and foster a sense of team spirit.

Here, multilingual communication platforms and AI-powered translation tools can play a vital role in ensuring seamless collaboration, regardless of location or language spoken.

SUSTAINABILITY: A BUSINESS IMPERATIVE

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations are no longer a niche concern, but a core business priority in 2024. Consumers are increasingly making purchasing decisions based on a company's commitment to sustainability, and regulations around environmental practices are becoming stricter.

For businesses with global operations, this translates to a need for transparent communication about their ESG efforts across all their markets. This necessitates the creation of multilingual sustainability reports and marketing materials that effectively communicate a company's commitment to environmental responsibility to a diverse audience.

The Keys to Maintaining Optimism as an Entrepreneur

Optimism for entrepreneurs is almost a necessity for survival, at least in the beginning. It's had a rough go in the business world, where the concept is more preferably attributed with resilience and perseverance than pure optimism. It's worth noting that leaders who claim to be optimistic in the business world often are only “cautiously” so. It reminds me of the long stretch of time in the beginning where my company continuously generated no revenue but we stayed the course regardless of the challenges.

UNDERSTANDING THE ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET

What sets you apart as an entrepreneur isn't that you necessarily have innovative and new ideas but are willing to execute on them and see them to the end regardless of the outcome. This is all while making sacriices in your daily life, whether it be missing

social events with friends or simply having time to yourself.

Optimism isn't just a personality trait but rather a crucial element in entrepreneurial success. Research in psychology and business studies has revealed that optimism helps entrepreneurs perceive opportunities where others see obstacles.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OPTIMISM FOR ENTREPRENEURS

Optimism helps you maintain a positive outlook despite numerous setbacks and uncertainties that are all too common while building a business from scratch. I started building my intech with a “cool” app idea that essentially generated no revenue in the beginning. To top it up, it wasn't free to build and had many monthly costs which I selffunded right from the start.

Essentially, with optimism you get entrepreneurs who are willing to invest more effort and focus on their projects to actually make it successful. Now how do you deine success?

A study based out of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on dispositional optimism was able to ind a correlation between entrepreneurial success and dispositional optimism. This is where individuals take proactive steps to improve and protect their health while maintaining an expectation of future success across life domains.

Key Strategies for Maintaining Optimism

These are some of the strategies that I live by in order to maintain a positive outlook in my entrepreneurial journey:

FOCUS ON SMALL WINS

This one is quite signiicant. Instead of going for moonshots and hitting setbacks constantly, try to aim for smaller achievements which in turn will give you small victories. Everyone has big goals for their business and a certain vision of what it could be like one day far in the future, but that can also make your current smaller wins look insigniicant and not worth celebrating.

STAY FLEXIBLE AND OPEN TO PIVOT

I didn't know I would need to go through 3 different product iterations and completely deprecate initial builds of my product when I started out. What helped me get through it is staying resilient in the process and keeping an open mind. Being willing to adapt to different business models or strategies based on market feedback is an essential part of the journey. Why?

Just because you make a cool new product, it doesn't mean others will ind it necessarily useful. Changing strategies and focus can lead to a lot of success down the road if done correctly. After we pivoted our strategy, we started seeing a ton more trafic and user growth on our website, going from ~100 visitors per month to now over ~10,000.

INVEST IN YOUR HEALTH

This one is probably obvious but it's essential to keep a healthy lifestyle while continuing your entrepreneurial journey. That means working out regularly, staying active while also continuing to remain social with your friends and family, although the social part might get reduced.

By keeping your mind clear and your body healthy, you're naturally more resilient to setbacks in your business and are more willing to maintain a positive outlook. This has personally helped me a lot!

FINAL THOUGHTS

As an entrepreneur, staying optimistic isn't just nice to have; it's pretty much a must, especially at the start. It's funny how in business, people talk a lot about being tough and pushing through, but they don't always talk about just being optimistic. In my own journey, there were times when it seemed like we weren't making any money at all. But we kept going, believing things would get better and the expenses were justiied.

Being an entrepreneur means you're willing to jump in and do the work, trying to make your big idea a reality. And sure, it means you might miss out on hanging out with friends or just chilling by yourself sometimes. But that's where being optimistic makes a big difference. It's not just about feeling good; it helps you see chances to succeed where others might just see problems.

I started with a cool app idea that didn't make money right away. It cost a lot to get going, and I was paying for everything myself. But being optimistic meant I kept working hard, looking forward to making it a success. And success? Well, it turns out that people who are optimistic tend to do better, because they're always looking for ways to improve and expecting good things to happen.

To stay optimistic, I focus on the small wins, stay lexible and ready to change my plan, and I make sure to take care of my health. Celebrating the little victories keeps you moving forward. Being open to changing your plan can lead to big wins later on. And keeping healthy helps you bounce back from the tough times.

So, remember, being optimistic as an entrepreneur helps a lot. It keeps you going through the hard times, ready to catch the next opportunity. And for me? After we changed our approach, more people started visiting our website—going from about 100 visitors a month to over 10,000. That's what staying optimistic can do.

New Report Highlights Business Case for Addressing Racial and Ethnic Equity Through Social Innovation

Agroundbreaking report released recently by the Schwab Foundation's Global Alliance for Social Entrepreneurship, in partnership with Echoing Green, the GHR Foundation, and Dalberg, is shedding light on the economic beneits of incorporating racial and ethnic equity into business practices. The report, titled "Innovating for Equity: Unlocking Value for Communities and Businesses," offers actionable pathways for social innovators, governments, and companies to tap into unexplored opportunities for global economic growth.

François Bonnici, Director of the Schwab Foundation and Head of Foundations at the World Economic Forum, emphasized the importance of the report, stating, "This report represents a call to action for leaders from across the public and private sectors to address racial and ethnic equity – not just as a moral imperative, but as a clear and compelling business case.” He added that addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a more just and equitable society while unlocking new avenues for sustainable economic growth and innovation.

The report highlights the staggering economic cost of racial inequities, citing that the widening racial wealth gap in the US alone could

cost up to $1.5 trillion in economic growth by 2028, capping GDP growth at 6%. It underscores the need for key stakeholders to work collaboratively to unlock this potential and spur the global economy.

Cheryl L. Dorsey, President of Echoing Green, also commented on the report, saying, "Supporting these largely untapped areas of innovation and growth has the potential to include millions of customers, employees, entrepreneurs, and investors in the global economy.” She urged corporations, policymakers, and innovators to come together to drive meaningful, system-wide transformation.

The report presents three scalable pathways for collaboration, each combining a socially innovative approach to value creation with addressing inequities at the root level:

Ÿ Expanding markets: By providing products and services that better meet the needs of diverse communities, businesses can sustainably grow and empower local populations. The report showcases examples from sub-Saharan Africa and the US, where tailored delivery models have improved local business operations.

Ÿ Unlocking talent: The report highlights the importance of more equitable hiring practices in unlocking untapped talent pools and reshaping employment opportunities. Neurodiversity in the Workplace: A Call for Greater Awareness and Inclusion

Recent research conducted by Eagle Hill Consulting highlights a signiicant gap in the workplace awareness and inclusion of neurodivergent individuals. Despite the United States experiencing a robust job market with unemployment rates below 4%, neurodiverse individuals, who constitute an estimated 15-20% of the population, face extraordinarily high rates of unemployment and underemployment.

Neurodiversity, a concept that recognizes differences in brain function and behavioral traits as variations rather than deicits, encompasses a range of conditions including autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, dyslexia, and more. Despite growing cultural awareness, as evidenced by popular shows like "Employable Me" and "Love on the Spectrum," the workplace lags in recognizing and leveraging the unique talents of neurodiverse individuals.

The study reveals that only 22% of U.S. employees are aware of working alongside a neurodivergent colleague, and a mere 15% are aware of any promotions within this group. This lack of visibility and advancement underscores a broader issue of inclusion and support within organizations.

Moreover, the research indicates that while 68% of employees are either unfamiliar with the term neurodiversity or do not

understand its implications, 72% expressed willingness to hire neurodivergent individuals. This discrepancy between openness to hiring and actual awareness highlights a crucial area for improvement in corporate education and outreach.

Workplace accommodations, such as lexible work environments and communication options, are highly valued by employees but are not as widely available as they should be. For instance, while 60% of employees appreciate the option to work from home, only 41% have access to this accommodation. Similarly, technological supports for managing time and schedules are viewed as helpful by 64% of employees, yet only 53% report having access to these tools.

The research also points to a shortage of skills and training for

managing neurodiverse employees effectively. Only 40% of respondents believe that their neurodiverse colleagues are able or more than able to perform their job, and just 14% report that their workplace offers training on managing neurodivergent employees.

To address these challenges, the study suggests that organizations need to improve awareness and understanding of neurodiversity, offer more targeted accommodations, and provide management training focused on leveraging the strengths of neurodivergent individuals. By doing so, companies can unlock the full potential of a diverse workforce, beneiting not only neurodiverse employees but also the overall productivity and innovation of the organization.

AI Disruption: 10% of Jobs at Risk

In a comprehensive analysis, the White House has revealed that approximately 10% of U.S. workers are employed in roles highly susceptible to the rapid advancements in artiicial intelligence (AI). This groundbreaking report, shared exclusively with CNN, delves into the potential impact of AI on the American workforce, highlighting that individuals with lower levels of education and income are particularly vulnerable.

The indings are a signiicant part of the Council of Economic Advisers' annual Economic Report of the President, which dedicates an entire chapter to AI and the necessary policy responses. Jared Bernstein, the chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, emphasized the importance of identifying those most at risk and taking proactive measures, akin to a public health approach to a virus.

The report underscores the White House's commitment to ensuring that the evolution of AI is carefully managed to beneit workers, contrasting with past technological developments that were not as closely monitored. Discussions are underway with labor unions, particularly in the service and manufacturing sectors, to prepare for the AI transition.

While AI is expected to enhance productivity for some, it poses a threat to other jobs. The report cautions that the full impact of AI is still uncertain and will depend on the technology's continued development. It highlights that generative AI has already begun to

perform tasks previously exclusive to humans, such as writing, image generation, and lyric creation.

Researchers identiied 16 work activities with high exposure to AI and found that about 20% of workers are in occupations with signiicant AI exposure. The vulnerability of jobs to displacement by AI is closely linked to the complexity and dificulty of the tasks involved.

The report indicates that 10% of workers are in roles with high AI exposure and low performance requirements, making them more susceptible to changes brought about by AI. However, this does not necessarily mean these workers will lose their jobs, as AI may alter their roles rather than eliminate them.

For example, the role of a school bus driver may evolve with AIdriven automation, but the need for human oversight for safety and behavior management on the bus will persist. Similarly, pilots are still required in aviation despite the existence of autopilot systems.

The analysis also highlights disparities in AI exposure based on education, gender, and income. Workers without four-year degrees, women, and lower-income individuals are more likely to be in jobs with high AI exposure and low performance requirements. This raise concerns that AI could exacerbate existing inequalities.

The White House report emphasizes that it is premature to conclude that AI will deinitively worsen inequality. However, the potential for AI to disproportionately affect lowerwage jobs while complementing higher-wage roles suggests that policy interventions may be necessary to mitigate adverse impacts on income inequality.

In summary, the White House is taking a proactive stance on AI, aiming to guide its development in a way that beneits workers and addresses potential inequalities. The report calls for thoughtful policymaking to ensure that the advancements in AI do not exacerbate social disparities.
