My Journey from being a Survivor to Healer
MY JOURNEY FROM BEING A SURVIVOR TO HEALER
M
My high school years were another testing ground with bullying, shootings, and high gang activity. Despite these challenges, I resolved to focus on my academics and sports, notably basketball and track. I cultivated relationships with everyone around me, from the drama crew to my fellow athletes.
Seeking a fresh start, I moved away to attend Whittier College in Southern California on a full academic scholarship. My passion for sports continued, and I even played college basketball until a knee injury ended my athletic career prematurely.
Through my personal experience of rehabilitation, I discovered my calling in physical therapy.
Graduating in 2006 with a degree in Kinesiology & Leisure Science, my purpose became clear: to help individuals strive toward functional goals, improving their quality of life. It was my personal encounter with loss and trauma that made me appreciate each day as a blessing, and I believe in God's plan, even when it's challenging to understand.
The global pandemic has placed a spotlight on health and fitness, a cause I hold dear. I am a COVID survivor. The brutal bout of the Delta variant in September 2021 was a frightening experience. But I took it head-on. I was determined to pull through for my children, who watched helplessly as the illness took its toll.
While still recovering from COVID, a
wildfire swept through Colorado, creating another traumatic experience. I also had to deal with the fallout of a divorce. It was as though a floodgate of past traumas had burst open all at once, revealing a lifetime of hardships I had yet to heal from.
Even through the darkness, I found light and hope. I found it through therapy, faith, friends, and a firm belief in a brighter tomorrow. I found it in my connection with The Divine as an empath. I saw visions of my loved ones at peace, which comforted me and guided me through my journey of healing.
2020 was a year of tumultuous change, but it taught me a lot. I learned to deal with loss, pain, and grief. I learned to embrace change. And most importantly, I learned that my past does not define me. I am not a victim of my circumstances, but a survivor who turned the trials into triumphs.
I believe in the power of positivity. I've witnessed its impact in my own life, in the way it has helped me weather numerous storms. I try to imbue this positivity in my clients, encouraging them to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I want them to know that they are stronger than they think, and they can overcome whatever challenges they face.
And through it all, through every high and low, every triumph and defeat, I've learned one crucial lesson: healing is not a linear process. There are good days and bad days, steps forward and steps backward. But it's all part of the journey, all part of the process.
Mary Alexandra Pavlantos' life has been marked by numerous trials, from surviving a drive-by shooting and experiencing loss of loved ones to overcoming physical abuse and emotional suffering. Despite these challenges, she has emerged as a powerful woman; a woman who trusts her path and refuses to be held back. Today, as a physical therapist, Mary uses her leadership skills to empower her patients, guiding them towards self-belief and healing.
Mary's leadership journey began in seventh grade when she won the Student of the Year award. Her innate desire to help others, spread positivity, and show kindness made her stand out from the crowd.
Her daily life reflects her commitment to being a leader by practicing small acts of kindness and being a beacon of light for those around her.
Balancing her professional life with self-care, Mary dedicates time to working out and cherishing moments with her children, exemplifying her ability to maintain work-life balance as an empath.
As an empath, Mary recognizes the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Working three to four days a week treating patients, she also manages various aspects of her business independently. Prioritizing her mental and physical well-being, she devotes time to her children and embraces opportunities to explore the beauty of the world around her, a testament to her dedication to self-care and personal growth.
Living life one day at a time, Mary's vision for the future revolves around living, loving, laughing, and traveling. Her business, Roots Physical Therapy and Wellness LLC, is thriving, with people seeking her healing touch.
She envisions establishing The Ray of Hope Foundation in honor of her best friend's sister, aiming to provide funding for mental health and alternative health services for neurologic patients not covered by insurance.
Mary's ultimate goal is to heal the world, one person at a time, bringing hope and light to those in need.
Being a business owner isn't easy, but I cherish every moment of it. My company, Roots Physical Therapy and Wellness LLC, is my heart and soul. I've poured my blood, sweat, and tears into building it from scratch. But I am rewarded with every smile I see on my patients' faces, with every 'thank you' I receive. There's no greater satisfaction than watching someone regain their
strength, their mobility, their independence.
Running Roots Physical Therapy and Wellness LLC is a dream come true. Every day, I get the chance to make a positive impact on someone's life. I get to guide them on their journey to recovery and watch as they reclaim their lives, their independence. It's an honor and a privilege I do not take lightly.
One significant aspect of my work is my specialization in traumatic brain injuries. My father's accident all those years ago left a deep impact on me. Now, I strive to help others navigate their own healing journeys. I understand their fears, their frustrations. And I let them know they're not alone. That we can overcome these challenges together.
My relationship with my body has evolved throughout this journey. From feeling disconnected and out of sync, I've learned to listen to it, to understand its needs, to give it the love and care it deserves. I've learned that healing is not just about the physical, but also the mental, emotional, and spiritual. I've learned that our bodies are incredible vessels of strength, resilience, and healing.
There's a certain magic in acknowledging your vulnerabilities, in embracing your imperfections, in celebrating your quirks. It's in these moments of self-realization that we truly connect with our authentic selves. It's a constant journey of unlearning and relearning, of shedding old layers and embracing the new. And in this process, we rediscover ourselves in the most beautiful ways.
My patients, too, have been instrumental in my journey. Each one of them is a testament to the power of the human spirit, to the resilience that lies within us all. Their strength inspires me, motivates me, pushes me to continue learning, growing, and evolving.
I'm a big believer in the power of community. In the strength that comes from standing together, supporting one another, lifting each other up. In the magic that happens when we unite in the face of adversity, when we choose love over fear, hope over despair.
As I navigate this beautiful, chaotic, messy journey called life, I want to
share a few insights that have helped me along the way.
First, remember that you are enough, just as you are. You don't need to prove yourself to anyone. You are beautiful, unique, and worthy of love and respect.
Second, trust the journey. Embrace the uncertainties, the unknowns, the surprises, for it's in the journey that we grow, learn, and evolve.
Third, celebrate your victories, big and small. Each step forward, no matter how small, is a testament to your strength, courage, and resilience.
And finally, remember to extend kindness, not just to others but also to yourself. Treat yourself with compassion, gentleness, and love. You are doing the best you can, and that's more than enough.
I've learned that every person has a unique story. Each of us has our own trials and tribulations. But what unites us is our capacity to overcome, to grow, and to heal. That's the true beauty of the human spirit. And that's the legacy I want to leave behind - a beacon of hope, resilience, and healing.
Here I stand, strong and proud, a survivor, a healer, a mother, a friend. My story is one of trials, but more importantly, of triumphs. I hope my journey inspires you to see the light in your own life, to believe in your strength, and to never give up, no matter what. Because no matter how dark the night is, the sun always rises. No matter how difficult the path may seem, there is always a way forward.

aving spent her earlier years in the labyrinth of finance, helping individuals save and manage their wealth, Jenn Drummond realized the interplay of health and wealth. For her, if health failed, all the amassed wealth would inevitably be channeled towards its restoration.
Hence, the philosophy she adopted was simple yet profound: a healthy body nourishes a healthy mind, allowing one to present their best selves to the world.
However, Jenn's story is no linear narrative. From the world of finance, through the tragic wake-up call of a car accident, to the
dizzying heights of Mount Everest and becoming the First and ONLY Woman EVER to complete the Seven Second Summits, her journey has been a rollercoaster of pursuits, setbacks, victories, and self-discovery.
Through her various challenges, including earning the world record title and becoming a successful entrepreneur, she showcases the universality of human experience. In this Interview Jenn Drummond talks about her journey, philosophy, and her vision going forward.
How would you describe your philosophy on health and fitness?
I believe that a healthy body gives you a healthy mind, and so by taking care of our body, we're taking care of who we are as a person. I think that I was in finance if this makes sense, to cooperate in this.
I was in finance, and I would help people save money, and then if they didn't have health, it didn't matter how much wealth they had, because all their money would be spent on taking care of their health. So, I think it's critically important. It's the one thing that we can control, and it's the one thing that allows us to show up the way that we want to show up for ourselves and for others.
What has been the journey like for Jenn Drummond thus far – from your car accident to hiking Mount Everest, from earning the world record title to becoming a successful entrepreneur?
My journey has been a lot like everybody's journey. I think I wrote in a speech this morning, its pursuit, setbacks, struggles, overcoming, becoming, summits, and then something else lures us into that cycle again.
If you think of the Joseph Campbell story of the Hero's Journey, it's been that in all different ways. I got out of college and took a job in finance. I loved working with people and helping people manage their money because that eased their brain, which then allowed them time to do things that they enjoyed. And I liked being a part of that story for them. I liked finance. I liked the puzzle of it. I liked just learning about it and understanding the time value of money and how compounding works and all that kind of stuff. Then when I had kids, I liked being home with them and looking at the world from their viewpoints and understanding that new challenge and that new summit.
And then I had the car accident, which woke me up to the fact that we don't live forever, and we only have so much time. So, what are the things that I want to do with this time, and how do I want to make my life count? Life experiences change us, and that was an experience that changed me to want to show people, like, hey, life isn't forever. Climb your Everest or do whatever your big goal is. Don't wait for it. Just go for it. And if you want to change, then change.
Climbing Everest was cool. Setting a world record
was way cooler because it was bigger than Everest. And there's something about us that likes to evolve and push forward and go beyond.
Talk to us about the record title being the First and ONLY Woman EVER to complete the Seven Second Summits. What does it mean to you?
Being the first female and the only woman to complete it means I'm the person that brought that story to life, but it's society that made it possible. It's the community. It's all of us that made this pursuit within reach.
It makes me excited because it shows how far we've come. It shows the prejudices that we've let go. It shows what we're capable of, what technology is produced, what communities produced, where women if I had been born in another era, it wouldn't have been in the realm of possibility. And it makes me excited for what's next to come.
What's going to be possible for my daughters and even their daughters? It reminds me of the Mayan ruins in Mexico - they took like 500 years to build, so the people who built them never got to see the finished product. It's mind blowing to me that they built this thing, and they had all this stuff going and all this kind of stuff, and it's like they died, and they only got a couple layers of bricks. And it's so inspiring for that generation that gets to see the final product, and there's certain things that I get to see the final product on, and there's certain things that I'm the first bricks on.
It's interesting to me how life evolves and becomes in the stories that we get to be a part of the stories that we get to finish, the stories that we get to start.
How are you helping and empowering people master their own summit in life?
I'm sharing my journey. I'm answering questions. I'm giving speeches. I'm writing a book. I'm doing coaching programs. I am trying to make this intangible thing tangible because we all plant our
flags in our own corners of the world. And when we stand on top of mountains, we're, like, quick to wave our flag, but we have to wave our flag the entire time we're on our journey because that flag lets other people know, hey, here's where I'm at. It lets them know how they can help, and it lets them know how you can help them.
If I wasn't waving my flag that I was going to go climb Pakistan and go back a second time, no one would have been able to reach out to me and say, hey, can you help? So, we have to wave our flags. We have to do things that allow people to know where we are. Even if our journey is in the middle of failure. Even if it's just that just means your story is not done.
What would be your advice for someone just starting to lead a healthier lifestyle and incorporate fitness?
You need to make it easy on yourself. If you're trying to incorporate a healthier lifestyle, don't go down the candy aisle at the grocery store. Don't have temptation around. You're going to have to be conscientious of when it is that you snack? I snack at four in the afternoon. I have a bowl of ice cream every day. It's terrible. The only time I don't have a bowl of ice cream is when I'm not in my house and if it's 07:00 p.m, I don't want a bowl of ice cream. The moral of the story is I'm not allowed to be home at 04:00 p.m. You need to know yourself and you need to know your patterns. You need to surround yourself with people that will help you make healthy choices. Every time I go on a podcast, every time I give a speech, every time, everywhere, everybody's like, man, it feels like I need to go for a walk today.
I didn't say one thing about actually going for a walk, but because that's the energy that I have, that makes other people want to exercise. And so, you need to be aware of, hey, this person, when I'm around, is either going to bring me down or bring me up and you need to evaluate who your inner circle is.
It's having community. Community to give you support and then make the sometimeshard thing easy. Make it easier to succeed than to fail. That's why people used to put credit cards in the middle of the ice block. They'd have to melt the thing, and for the entire 30 minutes they're melting it they're going against who they want to be. That gives you 30 minutes to pause before you spend the credit card.
With your book and documentary coming out next year, what is your vision going forward? What are you most excited about?
I'm most excited about when I get done with the speech or I get a text message on one of my channels or something, and someone tells me about what they're going to start doing, like how my story ignited something within their story and gave them permission to do the thing they've been desperately wanting to do. I'm most excited about the action that comes from bumping into those that I get the opportunity to bump into.
With the simple yet effective idea of filling the nutritional gaps in our diet, Durana Elmi along with her husband Shahab Elmi created Cymbiotika.
By combining scientific innovation with traditional Eastern medicine, Cymbiotika offers a line of supplements that improves our overall wellbeing and enables us to choose a healthier and sustainable alternative for our body. According to Durana, the Cymbiotika products are sourced from only the highest quality plant-based ingredients and utilize the most advanced absorption technology. In this Interview with Exeleon Women Magazine, she talks about the pain point that led to the start of Cymbiotika, her vision, and her fitness ideologies. How would you describe your philosophy on health and fitness?
For me, health and fitness serve as the very core of how we navigate our lives. They're not isolated aspects but rather the driving forces behind everything we do. When you prioritize your health and maintain your fitness, you're essentially equipping yourself with the energy, clarity, and resilience needed to tackle each day with confidence and purpose. It's a holistic approach that encompasses physical vitality, mental wellbeing, and the determination to overcome challenges.
Talk to us about your growing up years. What is your earliest memory as a leader / entrepreneur that you can remember?
My journey as a leader and entrepreneur traces back to my childhood. I have fond memories of forming clubs with my friends and naturally taking on leadership roles within them. This early inclination towards guiding, supporting, and inspiring others planted the seeds of leadership in me. As I reflect on those moments, I realize that even then, I found fulfillment in being someone who could rally others towards a common goal. It's these foundational experiences that eventually led me on the path of leadership and entrepreneurship.
My entrepreneurial journey began when we (my husband Shahab Elmi & I) owned our first Cricket Wireless store – it was then that I realized I loved the notion of being my own boss and owning my own time.
What was the pain point that led to the start of Cymbiotika? What was the idea behind its name?
Cymbiotika was conceived out of a significant pain point that emerged during our personal health journeys. Through our experiences, my husband Shahab Elmi and I realized that there was a notable lack of transparency within the wellness industry, especially when we started to consider what we were giving to our young daughters. This
gap left many people unsure about the quality and efficacy of the health products they were using. The inception of Cymbiotika was driven by a shared desire to bridge this gap and provide people with transparent products they could truly trust.
As for the name "Cymbiotika," it's a reflection of the harmonious relationship we aim to create between our bodies and the products we offer. The name encapsulates the idea of symbiosis – a mutually beneficial interaction between us and nature. It signifies the balance we strive for, where our products nourish and support the body, enabling individuals to thrive in synergy with their surroundings.
What approach do you follow in maintaining your own fitness level? What does a typical day look like in the life of Durana Elmi?
Maintaining my fitness level is a key priority for me. I kickstart my mornings with a 30-minute highintensity interval training (HIIT) workout. This sets a positive tone for the day, both physically and mentally. Additionally, I engage in tennis sessions three days a week in the evenings, which adds a fun and dynamic element to my fitness routine.
But fitness isn't the sole focus. I believe that nourishing my body is just as important. I make conscious choices when it comes to my diet, ensuring that the foods I consume provide the right fuel for my body to thrive. This dedication to fitness and health is integral to my daily routine, as it empowers me to approach each day with vitality and enthusiasm.
What would be your advice for someone just starting to lead a healthier lifestyle and incorporate fitness?
To anyone embarking on the journey of adopting a healthier lifestyle, I would offer this advice: Approach it as an act of self-love. It's important to
remember that every step you take towards better health is a testament to your commitment to yourself. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the process, focus on taking small, intentional actions each day. Consider it a journey of owning your day with purpose – one day at a time. By making gradual improvements and celebrating each milestone, you're cultivating a positive relationship with your well-being.
Moving forward, what does the future hold for you and Cymbiotika? What are you most excited about?
Looking ahead, I'm incredibly excited about the future of Cymbiotika. Internally, I'm eager to nurture the growth of our team and foster the development of emerging leaders within our organization. It's a privilege to watch our team members flourish and contribute to our shared vision.
Externally, I'm particularly enthusiastic about the expansion of Cymbiotika's offerings. We're venturing into areas such as homecare, pet products, and even a children's line. These endeavors allow us to extend our mission of holistic well-being to various aspects of life. Witnessing the positive impact Cymbiotika can have on individuals, families, and even pets fill me with a sense of purpose and excitement for what's to come.
ennifer Messer's life pivots on a poignant memory from her teenage years: the sudden and shocking death of her father from a heart attack at just thirty-nine. With a cloud of questions enveloping her - 'Why did this happen? Would her genetic legacy seal a similar fate for her?' - Jennifer's quest for answers unraveled a complex web of factors influencing cardiovascular health.
What began as personal introspection rapidly transformed into a crusade for holistic well-being. One profound moment of self-realization, upon seeing a photograph of herself on the brink of following her father's ill-fated footsteps, marked the start of her transformative journey. Tipping the scale at her heaviest and engulfed by fatigue, she resolved to rewrite her health narrative, not just for herself but for her family. From thereon, Jennifer's life intertwined with the mission of fostering a health-centric environment for her loved ones.
As a registered and listened dietician and expert nutritionist, Jennifer's vision today echoes her relentless spirit and hard-
earned wisdom: optimal health is achievable, and the transformative power of a healthful lifestyle is irrefutable.
In this Interview with Exeleon Women, Jennifer Messer shares about her journey, her fitness ideology, and her vision going forward.
My philosophy embraces a holistic approach to health and fitness for women, recognizing the interconnected dimensions of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. I prioritize physical activity and nutrition in my professional practice, viewing them as two pillars with far-reaching impacts. This symbiotic relationship between mental and physical wellness is at the heart of my approach. Balance is essential in my philosophy, as extremes hinder long-term success and overall health. I uphold evidence-based practices, rooted in scientific rigor, ensuring that my strategies are wellfounded and current. Individuality is
essential, and I customize and tailor my approach to my client's unique needs, preferences, and circumstances.
My philosophy is firmly rooted in the belief that women should view their well-being as an essential aspect of self-care that is non-negotiable. Allocating time for the preparation of nourishing meals and engaging in daily physical activity isn't an act of selfishness. On the contrary, it's a profound commitment to becoming the optimal version of yourself, ultimately benefiting not just you but also your entire
network of relationships – from spouses and children to family, friends, and colleagues.
By prioritizing these self-care practices, women empower themselves to operate from a position of strength, both physically and mentally. When your own health is nurtured, it reverberates positively throughout your daily interactions and responsibilities, allowing for a more vibrant and engaged presence in all aspects of your life.
TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR GROWING UP YEARS. WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST ASSOCIATION WITH fiTNESS?
From my earliest days, I was surrounded by the exuberance of my three brothers. This nurtured my love of fitness, which took root in outdoor exploits—scaling trees, catching frogs, and pedaling my bike through our neighborhood. When the time came to embark on the organized path of fitness, tap dance, gymnastics, and ice skating were my introduction. But baseball was my true passion. In Little League, I clinched the title of MVP, awakening my competitive fire. I grew to understand that in movement I experienced true joy.
WHAT PROMPTED YOUR INTEREST AND SUBSEQUENTLY YOUR FORAY INTO THE HEALTH AND NUTRITION SPACE?
My journey into health and nutrition has been a lifelong one that began with a personal tragedy. When I was young, my father passed away from cardiovascular disease at the age of 39. This experience shaped my identity and filled me with resilience and but also a strong curiosity for the role of genetics and lifestyle in chronic disease.
As a young mother, I saw a candid snapshot of myself and realized that I was standing at the edge of the same fate that had befallen my father. I was overweight, exhausted, and unhealthy. This reflection of reality motivated me to make a change.
Determined to be a role model for my daughters, I made gradual, sustainable changes to my nutrition and resurrected my love for fitness and sports. I went on to shed more than sixty-five pounds and markedly improved my health.
This pledge to my health and well-being marked my entry into the health and
nutrition field. I was then prompted to return to school to become a dietitian and then completed a master's degree in exercise science strength and conditioning. Now, fueled with knowledge, I am compelled to help other families avoid the devastating effects of losing a loved one prematurely and help people live full and active lives.
One of the most important underpinnings of the work I do with my clients is to first work with them to identify the 'why' behind their desire to embark on a health journey. This is a critical first step in laying the groundwork for success in any health journey. It is their reason for making changes, and it will help them stay motivated when things get tough. When clients understand their "why," they are more likely to make choices that are aligned with their goals.
Another crucial aspect of helping clients succeed is providing them with accurate information that clears up any misunderstandings or confusion about diet and exercise. This field can be overwhelming, particularly with so many unsubstantiated online resources, but relying on scientific research is the key to finding reliable answers that can be put into practice and get clients the results they dream about achieving.
Creating a safe space for open dialogue is essential in building a healthy client-coach relationship. Encouraging clients to openly discuss their issues, progress, and roadblocks helps me identify obstacles and work closely with them to develop strategies for effective navigation.
Extrinsic accountability is often necessary for clients in the early stages of their journey. By providing structured support and consistent accountability, I aim to encourage the development of intrinsic motivation within my clients, driving them toward their health and fitness goals. Ultimately my goal is for clients to outgrow the need for my services.
Embarking on a healthier lifestyle is always a good decision, no matter what your age. It's important to seek support and not be afraid to ask for help. As a woman who grew up in a predominantly male household, I believed that selfreliance was the key to resilience. However, during my own health transformation, I learned that seeking professional help and support from others is a sign of strength and wisdom. Luckily, many insurance plans cover the services of registered dietitians, who can provide excellent nutrition guidance for those on their wellness journey. If you need help getting started with strength training, consider seeking advice from a personal trainer - I know of a good one if you need a referral! Let your family and friends know you need their support and consider finding others with similar goals. A group with a common goal
provides support, motivation, and accountability, which can help you stay on track and achieve your vision for optimal health.
It's important to celebrate every accomplishment, regardless of how small it may seem. Whether you've cooked a healthy meal or gone to the gym after a long day at work, each victory deserves recognition. These small celebrations build momentum, and what was once overwhelming gradually becomes a habit that you eagerly anticipate.
Lastly, remember to take things one step at a time. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of achieving your goals quickly, but focusing on sustainable changes that you can maintain for the long haul is essential. Don't overwhelm yourself with too much too soon. Start with small changes that you can stick with and gradually make more changes as you become more comfortable. Achieving your vision for health is a journey toward a complete lifestyle overhaul that requires patience, determination, and self-love.
I am bursting with excitement about the future! I am passionate about health and wellness, and I am always looking for new ways to
improve my own health and the health of others. I have recently taken a deep interest in the study of health span and the science of staying young, both physically and mentally. I believe that this is the key to truly enjoying life to the fullest.
Professionally, I am thrilled to have recently kicked off a new venture in partnership with my daughter Lauren. We are combining our expertise to support people in achieving optimal health goals through balanced nutrition and effective physical activity. Interestingly, this venture is part of my personal pursuit too; seeing my daughter grow as a female strength coach in the fitness industry brings me immense joy and pride.
I believe that Lauren and I can make a real difference in the world by helping people live healthier, happier lives. We are both committed to this work, and I am excited to see what we can achieve together. My future promises a coming together of personal joy, professional growth, shared purpose, and the power of making a difference in people's lives. I am eager for the exciting times that lie ahead.
allie Jardine's love affair with Pilates started when she searched for low impact workouts that would help with her chronic tendonitis in her knees. Her growing up years as a competitive figure skater and her newfound love for Pilates and Barre prompted her to become a trainer.
With the emergence of the global pandemic, Callie turned to online platforms to expand her network. Soon enough, her social channels started garnering massive reach. Today, the young entrepreneur has gone onto establish a full-fledged business –Sweaty Studio and has built an ever-growing community who share a similar love for Pilates and fitness.
How would you describe your philosophy on health and itness?
I'm all about balance and iguring out what works best for you. A big part of my classes includes empowering my students to learn to care for their bodies inside and out and part of that includes focusing on the mindset.
For women especially, a lot of itness content is hyper focused on how it will make you look on the outside. I wanted to create itness content that also focuses on how you feel on the inside.
I encourage my students to be kind to themselves and find balance as they learn to adapt to healthy habits.
Not beating yourself up for allowing yourself to indulge every so often and having grace with yourself as you learn what does, and doesn't, work best for you is so important to me now and it's something I always strive to be very open and honest about as a fitness trainer and influencer.
Talk to us about your love for Pilates and how it eventually started your fitness business –Sweaty Studio.
I grew up as a competitive figure skater and suffered from chronic tendonitis in my knees which led me to search for alternative ways to train off of the ice. I eventually discovered low impact workouts like Pilates and barre during my search and completely fell in love. I began teaching Pilates and barre at local studios throughout Miami while I was still a college student. Around the same time, I also started sharing my passion for fitness, stemming from my upbringing as a competitive figure skater turned Pilates trainer, on a blog called “I'm Sweaty and I Know It”.
I was still a college student in 2020 when the pandemic forced all of the gyms to shut down in person classes and switch to virtual. I spent the remainder of my junior year juggling classes, learning how to teach virtual barre and Pilates classes, and publishing blog content. With so many starting to
share fitness content on social media during this time, my friends encouraged me to start posting workouts on TikTok, which I was reluctant to do at first but as soon as I did my social media accounts grew exponentially.
I decided to expand my content across platforms, started experimenting with long-form content on YouTube and teaching Instagram live classes from my blog's Instagram page, I'm Sweaty and I Know it. Eventually, that led to me creating my app and ondemand Pilates platform Sweaty Studio which has now become my full-time business. In addition to the studio, I also post relatable and practical wellness advice on my podcast, Healthy but Human, which currently has amassed over 1 million downloads. I was actually able to quit my full-time job last year to focus on my business fulltime and I've now generated over six figures in annual profits.
Since starting your business, what has been the biggest challenge for you when it comes to growth?
As a young entrepreneur I recognized there was a lot for me to learn. I also recognized that opportunities could be found in the least expected situations. Working through my imposter syndrome and preventing myself from letting it stop me from taking the steps I needed to grow was pivotal for me. I had to give myself a lot of grace to learn, make mistakes, and continue to grow.
I recall my very first launch made less than $50 and I felt like an
absolute failure. Instead of letting the numbers kill my dreams and stop me from continuing to pursue my goals, I recognized that I needed to keep learning and take this “failure” as an opportunity to grow. I eventually figured out what worked best for me and resonated most with my audience and as a result of perseverance and humility, I now have a 6-figure business!
It definitely takes a lot of patience and a lot of humility to recognize where you still need to learn but it's so important to not be afraid and keep trying.
What approach do you follow in maintaining your fitness level? What does a typical day look like in the life of Callie Jardine?
A big part of my fitness regimen at this stage is continuing to make sure I'm challenging myself so lately I work to progressively increase my resistance by blending heavier weights with my Pilates workouts.
A typical day for me these days is wake up, eat a nourishing breakfast, and make sure I'm getting some morning quiet time before I kick off my day. Balance is important to me, so I make sure to prioritize both my family and my business. Most days I'll take a walk with my husband and dogs outside, film social media content and workouts, and then I typically spend a great deal of time at
the beach surfing or soaking in the sun.
Many afternoons I work on editing and engaging with my community and once work has wrapped up for the day, I focus on spending time with my husband and friends. Again, balance is key.
What would be your advice for someone just starting to lead a healthier lifestyle and incorporate fitness?
While it's so helpful to have guidance and inspiration from fitness coaches and influencers, ultimately, it's important to remember that no one is created the exact same and what works for you might look totally different than what's worked for others.
I made the mistake of pushing my body past its limits on multiple occasions because of the misconceptions I had about what it would take to get my body in peak physical shape. I unfortunately cannot tell anyone what the perfect amount of exercise is to get into shape, however I always encourage my students and audience to be open to trying new things and see what works best for them.
I find that the best results come when you feel confident, empowered, and remain consistent. It's far easier to be consistent with workouts you love than those you don't like very much so really focusing on finding what feels right for you
is so important. How you feel about yourself as a whole is just as important. I live by the statement “you cannot hate yourself into a body that you love”. I truly believe with selflove and confidence we are better able to find and stick with the routines that work best for us. Start with the mindset and the rest will follow.
Moving forward, what does the future hold for you and Sweaty Studio? What are you most excited about?
Sweaty Studio is unique in that I really grew my community via social media, particularly during the pandemic, so I'm really focused on ways to continue to engage with my online community which I currently do via monthly workout programs, challenges, and weekly live sessions. What's really exciting for me now is the opportunity to also grow and connect with my community in person by offering Pilates beach classes. Nothing beats having that face time with my students.
Additionally, I'm working to bring reformer Pilates to the studio since I've primarily stuck with mat and wall Pilates up until recently. I'm also planning to launch branded fitness equipment. Lots of exciting stuff is happening at Sweaty Studio!
ow would you describe your philosophy on health and fitness?
My passion is offering a variety of workouts and helping women find the right one for them, especially one they enjoy! There is a plethora of exercise modalities that exist in our current world. What works for one person, may not for someone else. The most important component in health and fitness is finding a workout that works for the individual, that they enjoy, and can be modified for their needs.
Talk to us about your growing up years. What is your earliest association with fitness?
Growing up I was NOT a fit kid. I was unfortunately picked last for sports teams and did not have that confidence. After my senior year of high school, I knew I had to make that change. I joined a gym and became heavily involved in working out. I was at the gym 4-6 days per week consistently. The manager approached me and said I should get my Personal Trainer certification. I began studying and did just that! Within 3 months I took the test, passed, and began working at my local gym.
What prompted you to become a personal trainer and start CGM Fitness?
I did go into a bit of my story above for how I became a trainer. Over the next 5 years I worked
at local gyms and became well known in multiple communities. I also taught classes and got my group fitness instructor certification as well. By the year 2015 I was teaching 15 classes per week in high end gyms and going to multiple clients' homes. Sometimes, I would drive 100 miles per day.
By 2020 I was tired, and I knew I needed to make a change. This is when Covid hit. I decided to take my sole proprietorship C.G.M. Fitness and incorporate. I built an online fitness platform on www.cgmfit.com. Women take classes live on Zoom and on demand as well. I see clients both inperson and online! I no longer work for gyms!
As an in-home fitness trainer, what are some of the biggest challenges that you have to face? How do you tackle the same?
The biggest challenge for me was the traveling. Driving all over Long Island took a toll on my mental health. Now training online makes it more convenient. My husband and I also turned our twocar garage into a fitness studio! If clients are local, I can see them in person here. I will travel now, but
I did increase my fees for traveling as there is both an online and in-person option here!
What approach do you follow in maintaining your fitness level? What does a typical day look like in the life of Cara D'Orazio?
I teach a LIVE class 5 days per week, and it is 50 minutes long. The formats vary each day. Barre, Pilates hybrid, strength, and band are just some of the formats I offer. When teaching online, I tend to do the workout with them. I also record a 25 min. Workout each week to be launched on the on-demand section of the website. I do not feel the need to do extra workouts than the one I teach daily. However, I will walk daily and swim in the summer!
What would be your advice for someone just starting to lead a healthier lifestyle and incorporate fitness?
Find the workout that works for YOU! Not everyone likes barre, but some love it. The key to being successful is to look forward to and enjoy the workout. This will truly encourage you to want to do it more! Working out and eating healthy go hand in hand. Once you begin to workout, eating healthy will fall into place. Of course, in the beginning stages, it is best to consult with a personal trainer and nutritionist to put you on the right path!
Moving forward, what does the future hold for you and CGM Fitness? What are you most excited about?
I am going to continue to run my group fitness classes online and train clients 1:1 in person and online both. I look forward to connecting with more women, inspiring multiple people, and growing from where I am now!

ow did you get into this fitness journey?
Growing up, I knew nothing about healthy balanced nutrition to fuel my body properly, and I constantly dealt with painful digestive issues and inflammation. After my mom passed away 16 years ago, I myself had some health concerns that directly related to some of the same gut health issues my mom suffered with. I consulted many doctors who resorted to recommending pills opposed to a lifestyle change, which was what I really needed in the long run.
My mom passed away when I was 26 years old and that was a traumatic event that elicited a lot of reflection about life as it was and my future.
When I was 33, I had a miscarriage, but fortunately not long afterwards I was pregnant again, and had a healthy son by C-section! Having my son was a huge eye-opener for me that I needed to make some serious changes in my life.
When my son was born, I looked at him in my arms and I knew I had to learn how to grow stronger mentally and physically to be around as
long as possible for him and my family. I made a decision that impacted my life for the better!
I have been learning and growing within the health and fitness industry now for the last 7 years trying to stay active and nutritionally balanced. I made internal health and exercise an integral part of my lifestyle. Now my son sees how important fitness and nutrition is for all our internal and external health. I made a decision that not only impacted my life for the better, but also my sons. I look up daily knowing my mom would be proud that despite my busy lifestyle, I made time for me, which in turn, gives me more time with my son!
I CAN, AND I WILL came from building confidence through learning about my body physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I pushed myself to step outside my comfort zone, challenge myself, as well as learn from others! Building confidence is about self-love and reclaiming your authentic self. You can, and you will!
What motivates you every day?
My intrinsic motivation comes from connecting to myself and what makes me feel great inside and out. I know what it feels like to be unhealthy internally and externally. I understand the pain, discomfort, and mood imbalances when feeling sick because of being stuck in a state of toxicity in my body from years of not being healthy.
I knew that I did the best I could at the time with the information I had as I grew up. But I also knew I was able to unlearn those bad habits and become stronger, happier, and more energized. I'm motivated each day by loving who I am becoming and loving the process and knowing deep within me I never want to go back to feeling how I did years ago before I knew better.
This is my future and my life and through my sons' eyes I find the motivation to keep going and never give up!
What advice do you have for women starting out on their fitness journey?
Learn from others and be open to taking risks and being uncomfortable. One of the best pieces of advice I was given is “progress over perfection!”
Working on becoming 1% better each day is the goal. Reflect on your daily habits and routines. Ask yourself if what you're doing is pushing you towards your goals or away from them. Be patient with yourself and find what motivates you to keep going on the days you don't want to, because willpower
doesn't last, but building healthy habits does.
What's your message to other moms out there?
My hope is that I can help inspire and empower other moms to have the courage to make their health and fitness a lifelong goal! One thing I kept telling myself on a daily basis is that what I am not changing, I am choosing. So, each day I made the time to exercise because it ultimately is MY CHOICE to be healthy! Exercise for me a lifestyle and a part of my daily routine!
I fell in love with strength and resistance training, and I love continuing to learn more about health and fitness each day! I also believe in the 80/20 rule to focus on whole, healthy foods 80% of the time and still be able to have those cookies, that I had fun baking with my son, 20% of the time.
It's really about learning what your body needs to function and feel its best. I find success in tracking my macros and taking care of my gut health first.
Truly, I'm grateful for those who inspired me when I started, and making the decision to prioritize health and fitness as an integral part of my everyday life is how I can make a difference for myself, my son, and to encourage and inspire others. We can't stop time, but we can choose how to spend it. Change your mindset, change your life, and never stop learning!
