WELCOME FROM EXERTIS Altham Sales: 01282 776 776
Welcome to the latest issue of Future Business. This edition focuses on a couple of technology solution areas. Firstly on page 16, you can find out more on how you can work with us on enterprise solutions covering server and storage, networking and infrastructure, UC and security, and how you can take advantage of our range of service offerings. As you will see in our article about the acquisition of Siracom, a branded wireless infrastructure and security distributor, we are constantly adding to our portfolio to ensure we can provide an end to end solution for resellers. Secondly, on page 35, we take a look at one of our biggest growth areas “AV” and how convergence with IT is enabling more resellers to enter this market. Our recent addition of a comprehensive range of cables and connectors illustrates our commitment to provide a one-stop solution. We also take a look at two categories that are destined to grow. Whilst the PC market has been struggling in the past few quarters, one category has stood out. The convertible or 2 in 1 market is a bright spot and one where Exertis has plenty of choice, including being the exclusive distributor for Samsung in this category. The second area set for growth is VR. Whilst most talk about the opportunity in gaming and there is no doubt about that, we take a look at why VR has great potential in the business arena. There aren’t too many vertical markets where you can’t see VR having an impact in the future.
Not surprisingly, we aim to be in both markets to enable you to take advantage of the opportunity. Security is probably the most talked about issue in IT and we are pleased to bring you an article from the Federation of Small Business on cybersecurity. Allied to that feature is the news about European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The legislation has finally passed through the EU and comes into force in May 2018. This has implications for companies of all sizes that hold personal data and we see it as a real chance for resellers to start engaging with their customers on this topic. Finally, two very different articles. Video has become a very important area in content marketing. We take a look at why this is and how you can use this medium to great effect in generating sales. The other article is more of a case study about how a reseller has worked with a number of suppliers, including Exertis, to pull together a bundle that helps digitally excluded children enjoy the benefits of technology in their education. Hope you enjoy the read and the promotional offers, and thank you for your continued business.

Professional Services Peripherals Print (VAD) You could be forgiven for thinking that virtual reality (VR) only applies to gaming because this is where the initial excitement began. But it may not be gaming that provides the biggest business for VR in the future. Some analysts have described VR and augmented reality (AR) as the fourth major platform shift after PC, the web and mobile. Certainly, it has a host of big name players battling for supremacy in the market: Facebook with Oculus Rift, Microsoft Hololens, Samsung Gear, HTC Vive, Google, and Sony also spring to mind. These companies have more than gamers in their sights. Without question, virtual reality isn’t confined to the living room, it has many applications in the enterprise market and these will continue to grow. Indeed VR could well transform some industries. So let’s take a look at some of the business applications for VR.

COMMUNICATION ANDRetail COLLABORATION Public SectorServices Retail This can apply in many areas. Virtual Worlds where you can hold meetings more naturally with people based in various locations saving cost on travel, where you can more easily share projects and demonstrate prototypes enabling more active contribution from participants. VR could significantly improve the design process for colleagues who are working on the same project around the world, providing a way to visualise a product and a safe space to test new designs before committing to them.

VR has the capability to enrich an experience as well as making the learning process more enjoyable. Opportunities in education are endless and can apply to people of all ages from primary education through to university students. Those companies that invest in these areas are likely to benefit from this huge market.

Whilst SDS has been around for several years, the momentum behind the technology is increasing exponentially, forcing the market to consider how quickly the approach, traditionally thought disruptive, will in fact become best practice and eventually mainstream in the datacentre. According to a recent IDC survey, more than 25% of organisations have already invested in software-defined storage solutions in 2015 and a further 40% are evaluating options. This was further evidenced by a poll conducted by SDS provider DataCore which revealed that many organisations are moving away from storage functions tied to specific hardware.

to encourage an upgrade. Video has played an important role in showing prospective buyers a property. VR takes it to the next level and can save on the number of site visits that need to be made. Similarly, architecture is another sector that could benefit, creating a realistic image of a building that is hard to imagine from an architect’s plan. What if you could see the interior of a car you are interested in buying without the need to visit the showroom or be sitting in your living room watching a live sporting event in VR? It’s clearly evident that the next few years are likely to be huge for VR. Companies will start to engage with their customers through VR experiences that educate, entertain and encourage sales by creating a truly immersive journey that enables the user to experience something that would otherwise be out of reach. In fact, the virtual and augmented reality market could become an $80 billion industry by 2025 according to a Goldman Sachs prediction earlier this year. $45 billion in hardware revenue and $35 billion in software by then. By comparison, Goldman estimated the current hardware markets for notebooks to be $111 billion and the video game console market at $14 billion. Businesses that don’t embrace VR and AR may well be left behind. Sources and acknowledgements: VR society, Digital Trends, zdnet, techradar.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AR AND VR?
RESOURCING AND TRAINING HR departments will be able to take advantage of training personnel on equipment that may not be in the same location. It could be used for a variety of on-boarding procedures, even with initial interviewing of candidates. This would be able to happen from anywhere in the world and still feel personal and intimate. Virtual reality apps that can facilitate learning in a business environment will become the norm.
E-COMMERCE Complemented by AR, VR is likely to have a big impact in on-line shopping and consequently for e-tailers and retailers. VR can create the opportunity for the consumer to see how something might look in their home or indeed on their person without the need to visit the store.
VERTICAL MARKETS Here the opportunity is only limited by your imagination. But travel, estate agency, automotive, design and media are obvious examples. Why not experience the location you would like to visit and the hotel you might stay at before you travel. Geographical location will become irrelevant and present a great way for the travel company
What is Augmented Reality? Augmented reality takes our current reality and adds something to it, as developers can create images within applications that blend in with contents in the real world. With AR, users are able to interact with virtual contents in the real world and are able to distinguish between the two. What is Virtual Reality? Virtual reality is all about the creation of a virtual world that users can interact with. VR is able to transpose the user to somewhere else through visors or googles. This virtual world should be designed in such a way that users would find it difficult to tell the difference from what is real and what is not. Both virtual reality and augmented reality are similar in the goal of immersing the user but achieved in a different way. With AR, users continue to be in touch with the real world while interacting with virtual objects around them. With VR, the user is isolated from the real world while immersed in a completely fabricated environment.

EU DATA PROTECTION RISK AND OPPORTUNITY After four years of protracted negotiation, the new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect on May 25th 2018. But what does that mean for businesses in the UK and what’s actually changed? Essentially, it’s a modernisation of the data protection laws from 1995 taking into account the digital age in which we now live. The basic aim is to harmonise the existing data protection laws in place across the EU member states and will become directly applicable to all members without the need for national legislation. Under the new law, companies will need to ensure they take data protection seriously whist the rights of individuals will be improved in a digitised world of connected devices, social media and e-commerce. For companies, data protection issues will now be more costly. Businesses that fall foul of the stricter laws will face fines up to 4% of their global revenue for the previous year or €20 million depending on which is the greater, a substantial increase on the maximum £500,000 previous penalty in the UK. They may even be required to show how they are complying with the legislation, irrespective of a breach.
KEY RULES FOR BUSINESS Businesses of a certain size (estimated to be 250+ employees but that may not be the only criterion) will need to employ a data protection officer if they handle sensitive data or track consumer behaviour. (Firms whose core business activities are not data processing are exempt from that requirement). The definition of sensitive data has been extended to not only include online identifiers like cookies, RFID tags and IP addresses but also genetic and biometric data. Data breaches will need to be reported within 72 hours of data controllers being aware of it, unless there are justifiable exceptional circumstances. Importantly, the legislation will apply to any company that handles EU citizens’ data even if they are not based in Europe. Data controllers will be required to conduct privacy impact assessments where privacy breach risks are high to analyse and minimise the risks to their data. Irrespective of the Brexit vote, GDPR is going to affect UK businesses offering any type of service to the EU market, regardless of whether a business stores or processes data on EU soil, and whether the UK stays in the EU or not. What triggers the applicability of the GDPR is whether the data a business handles is about EU individuals or has the potential to identify individuals that find themselves in the EU – not about whether a company is in the EU. Rather worryingly, Computer Weekly reported that 44% of IT professionals were “unaware or only vaguely aware of the new rules”.

The new rules will effectively give individuals more rights over their personal data. Perhaps, the most significant is the right to be forgotten. No longer will companies be able to retain or process an individual’s data if the person wishes it to be erased and the regulation puts the onus on business, internet companies (including social media platforms) and public bodies to notify users about how their personal data is being collected, stored and used. Erasure doesn’t apply to companies required to keep that data for legal reasons. Companies must not only notify individuals earlier but ensure that clear and affirmative consent to the processing of private data has been provided. Silence or inactivity does not constitute consent.

Securing data will need to be uppermost in companies’ minds and IT resellers have a two-year window of opportunity to help companies in this area. The GDPR provides organisations with the chance to seriously analyse their existing security processes and procedures to lessen the risk of a very expensive data breach. As has been shown to be the case, we are living in an era where any company can be a target for cybercriminals and many believe that data breaches are almost inevitable, so taking measures like data encryption should be seen as a prerequisite.

As more organisations move operations to the cloud visibility across the public, private and hybrid clouds will become critical. Larger organisations can take advantage of the latest technology to centralise their data and eliminate the risk of managing it across remote locations. Storing and protecting sensitive data in a centralised location where strict controls exist on access and where stringent policies and procedures apply to backup and replication would seem to be a wise move.

Data is the most important asset for many organisations and those that are proactive and build customer trust will gain a competitive advantage. Companies that get it wrong risk irrevocable damage to their reputation and loss of business. At the very least, the GDPR should act as a prompt for companies to review their security requirements.

EXERTIS WIRELESS AND MOBILITY SOLUTIONS – FORMERLY SIRACOM April’s acquisition of wireless and security solutions distributor Siracom was a firm statement that Exertis is committed to providing reseller partners with one of the most comprehensive end-to-end portfolios of enterprise solutions in the market. With the integration of Siracom nearing completion we caught up with Siracom co-founder Rob Leggett and Exertis sales and commercial director, Phil Brown.
specify install and support a complete end-to-end solution and reduce complexity. That is a real time-saver and enormous benefit for a lot of customers from SMB to very large integrators.
WHERE DOES THE SIRACOM TEAM AND EXPERTISE SIT WITHIN EXERTIS?
RL: Wireless is fundamental to the success of any project that seeks to utilise mobile devices over a private network, whether that is devices that belong to an organisation or devices that belong to the public. Since our foundation we have been at the leading edge in mobility solutions, delivering mission critical applications over wireless, meeting the business requirements of fast, reliable, safe, secure and managed. The education sector was a pioneer here. As schools put mobile devices and internet connectivity at the heart of teaching and learning, they were amongst the first high density high mobility environments. They found that their existing wireless solutions were inadequate and that simply spending money on new wi-fi did not provide a fix. We were able to demonstrate that our solutions enabled seamless school wide mobile learning and implemented solutions in over 4,000 UK schools via our channel.
PB: The acquisition came about because Siracom is a natural complement to the Exertis Enterprise Solutions on two fronts. Firstly, wireless, security and mobile device management products complete our enterprise offering from the edge and end-point devices, through connectivity, security and access control to the network, servers, storage and the datacentre, and all the wrap-around services to support it’s all now here at Exertis. Secondly, the Exertis way of providing extensive product choice and access to specialists in the key technology areas means the Siracom team and their renowned, unmatched expertise and knowledge of wireless environments and security fit right into how we conduct our business.
WHAT IS THE KEY BENEFIT FOR CUSTOMERS? PB: There are significant benefits for both sets of customers. Siracom customers can maintain their close relationships with the team and benefit significantly from the might of Exertis’ distribution engine, and Exertis customers can now be lavished with support and expertise across the wireless end of the enterprise from the Siracom team. It’s a win for all customers. RL: The term “one-stop shop” is over-used and often abused. Here at Exertis it is now totally appropriate. Previously we could only offer a slice of the solution that our customers were trying to deliver. Now we are in the position where customers can not only talk to us about access and security but also all the devices, be they mobile or large format displays, and the whole back-end infrastructure too networking, servers, storage, datacentre and even applications running on the network. We can serve up the right specialist people at the right time to support and help resellers design, demonstrate,
HOW CAN RESELLERS BENEFIT FROM BECOMING MORE INVOLVED IN WIRELESS?
The migration to mobility is now seen in retail, hospitality, leisure, health and corporate sectors. There are many greenfield sites as public access is considered for the first time and there is huge upgrade potential from early installs to provide higher reliability and better performance for many more devices. Wireless access is still a critical, and largely expected, element of infrastructure and end-customer service, but the world is moving fast and in many environments it provides an even more valuable service – customer insight. Take retail and hospitality; many now appreciate that wireless allows for device monitoring so opening up a world of insight into customer movement and behaviour. This is where things get exciting for us – we can now support customers on projects where large format displays instore can change messaging in response to user browsing, or movement through the store and dwell times in certain locations. How to ensure that customers make their purchase in store, not at home on the internet, is a far more valuable conversation for a reseller partner to have with their customer than purely the access point and connectivity. We can now have that conversation. Exertis Wireless and Mobility Solutions – formerly Siracom, are fully integrated and ready to talk all things wireless. Call 01256 707 070.

SMALLER BUSINESSES UNDERESTIMATE CYBERCRIME Businesses across the UK face an ongoing challenge to protect themselves against the increasing threat of cybercrime. Smaller businesses, which generally don’t have the highly sophisticated systems in place to prevent fraud as do larger businesses, can be an attractive target for cyber criminals. High profile hacking scandals like the attack on TalkTalk in October last year, which cost the company eq. £60 million and led to the loss of over 100,000 customers, brought the issues of cyber security to the top of the news agenda. While the attack proved less invasive than first believed, customers were left angered by the company’s handling of the attack in its early stages and its apparently inadequate security systems. This hack was on a large scale, but lower level cyber attacks occur on a daily basis and are an ongoing concern for many businesses. Companies need to take proactive steps to assess risks and address them. With SMEs often lacking specialist staff to cover growing issues around data security, it is important for businesses to maintain good housekeeping habits in order to minimise the risk.
WHY IS CYBERCRIME A THREAT? The disruption caused by cybercrime is a serious barrier to growth and can cause irreparable damage not only to a business’s capability to trade, but also its reputation. Firms need to take steps to assess the risks of online crime and fraud. While an attack may be on a relatively small scale if customers cannot trust that their details are secure, especially their financial information, they will lose confidence in a business. Many businesses simply don’t realise they are at risk and often, assume cyber criminals are only targeting banks or larger online retailers. The reality is that if you have an online presence, you are a target. It is vital that all businesses try to give time and consideration to their online and data security. A report from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) into cyber security and fraud found that small firms lose up to £800 million per year to cybercrime. The research found that 41% of smaller businesses fell victim to cybercrime throughout one year, putting the average cost at around £4,000 per business. Around three in ten small businesses have been a victim of fraud, typically by a customer or client (13%) or through ‘card not present’ fraud (10%). The report also found that one in five small business owners have not taken any steps to protect themselves from a cybercrime. However, 36% said they regularly install security patches to protect themselves
Altham 01282 776 776 | Basingstoke: 01256 707 070 | store.exertis.co.uk
from fraud and almost 60% regularly update their virus scanning software to minimise their exposure to online crime. However, some businesses will not even realise they have been a victim of cybercrime. A sophisticated hacker could access a system installing Trojan software or stealing sensitive information and a company might never know. If they do detect a data breach, investigating irregularities can be a time intensive and invasive exercise requiring support from expensive external consultants. A forensic investigation to establish vulnerabilities in a system can be a costly exercise.
HOW CAN SMALLER BUSINESSES PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM FRAUDSTERS WHO ALWAYS SEEM TO BE ONE STEP AHEAD OF EFFORTS TO TRY TO STAY SAFE? Below are the top 10 tips from FSB for businesses to stay safe online:
1 2 3 4 5
Implement a combination of security protection solutions (anti-virus, anti-spam, firewall(s))
6
Train staff in good security practices and consider employee background checks (even the most secure institutions in the world have suffered data breaches as a result of people using ‘password’ or ‘123456’ as their access codes)
7
Implement and test backup plans, information disposal and disaster recovery procedures
8 9 10
Carry out regular security risk assessments to identify important information and systems
Carry out regular security updates on all software and devices Implement a resilient password policy (min eight characters, change regularly) Secure your wireless network Implement clear and concise procedures for access to email and internet and have a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy
Carry out regular security testing on the business website Check provider credentials and contracts when using cloud services
Separate research from Cyber Streetwise and KPMG found that 93% of small businesses think about their company’s reputation frequently or all the time, but aren’t considering how a breach could affect it. The digital world provides huge opportunities for growing a business or reaching into new markets, especially for smaller businesses without a vast distribution and sales network, yet greater use of technology also means greater vulnerability to digital threats. Major brands such as Sony’s PlayStation Network, Talk Talk, Target, Gawker and AOL suffered significant reputational damage following cyber security breaches. Despite high powered PR and communications support they found themselves struggling to rebuild customer trust. For a small business reputational damage can be crippling so all small firms should be aware of the risks and take steps to protect themselves against the escalating level of cybercrime. A cyber breach can happen to any business of any size and the repercussions should not be underestimated, leading to damaged reputations, hindered growth and in the worst cases entrepreneurs being put out of business. Building the resilience of their business to cybercrime is important and should be high on all small business owners’ lists of priorities.

HOW TO USE VIDEO TO ENHANCE YOUR CONTENT MARKETING
If you don’t have a strategy for video in your content marketing, there’s every chance that your competitor does and that could lose you opportunities and even customers. The reasons are clear and the statistics are overwhelming for the use of video. First some statistics. Cisco predicts that by 2017 video will account for 69% of all consumer internet traffic and that 80% of all internet traffic will be streaming video content by 2019, up from 64% in 2014. Syndacast tends to agree suggesting that 74% of all internet traffic in 2017 will be video. Nielsen claims that 64% of marketers expect video to dominate their strategies in the near future, and in another recent survey from Demand Metric 74% of all B2B marketers reported that video now converts better than other content types. Studies have also shown that using the word “video” in the subject line of an email can increase open rates by 19%, click-through rates by 65% and reduce un-subscribers by 26%. According to Twitter, videos and photos get the most retweets. In a recent Forbes article, it was claimed that the average number of internet users who watch videos each day has reached 100 million.
REASONS TO BE SEEN Now for some reasons. Video is a great medium for brands to build closer relationships with their customers, educate and convert buyers and increase customer satisfaction. What’s more it’s naturally engaging and in the digital age where people are simply overloaded with information, it's vital for any business to offer content that is easy to digest; if not, customers will simply move on. As it’s easier for the brain to process visual content, video does this very well. As Forrester’s so aptly put it “If a picture paints 1,000 words then one minute of video is worth 1.8 million”. Imagine having to trawl through that on a website. Most importantly, research has shown that customers are more likely to buy a product having seen it being demonstrated on video. Indeed Forbes claimed that 90% of shoppers at major retailers indicated that video played an important part in making their purchasing decisions and research by Animoto said that 96% of consumers found videos helpful when they are making purchasing decisions online. According to the Online

That’s a positive return on investment. Aberdeen Research concluded that video marketing in the B2B arena is the most popular form of content, followed by white papers and 3rd party research with Forbes reporting that 75% of executives watch work-related videos on business websites at least once a week.

Once the province of YouTube, an increasing number of content marketers are opting to upload directly onto Facebook which allows up to 20 minutes of view time, although the average length is said to be under a minute (more on length of videos later). In September last year, 8 billion video views per day were reported on the Facebook platform alone. Twitter allows 30 second videos whilst Linked-In enables videos to be embedded into profiles and posts. Of course, there is always the option to create a link to YouTube. Importantly, the potential to go viral increases with video as users are more likely to share video than other forms of content.

They predict some interesting trends in video marketing, particularly in the B2B market where tech savvy sales reps are using smartphones and webcams to record personal greetings or to send a follow-up message. Certainly, it seems that videos will become an important marketing tool providing the opportunity for customised on-demand product demos that can provide consistent messaging and sales efficiency. First and foremost it’s the relevancy to your target market. If it isn’t engaging, informative and compelling then it won’t make a difference. Creating that interest at the beginning is vital. Research by Visible Measures claimed that marketers have no more than 10 seconds to grab the viewers’ attention with 20% clicking away from the video in that timeframe and 60% by the 2 minute mark. The length will depend on what type of video it is but no more than 2 to 3 minutes for most types. Again depending on its use, you will want the quality to reflect your brand. It doesn’t need to be a cinematic production but it needs to enhance rather than embarrass. However, with today’s technology it’s possible to make a great video that suits most marketing budgets.

THINK AV. THINK EXERTIS Leading brands, the most comprehensive end-to-end product offering, qualified and experienced staff, and an enviable suite of pre- and post-sales services. Is Exertis the premier AV distributor in the UK? Following a fifth year of consistent organic growth, the Exertis AV team is moving closer to the goal of becoming the UK’s number one AV distributor. The criteria for this is not simply sales volume though, rather a mix of having the UK’s most comprehensive product range, working in partnership with resellers and vendors, leading the convergence of IT and AV technologies, and having the most qualified, best skilled team of any distributor.
A TEAM TO SUPPORT Exertis AV is a specialist team within Exertis, supplying all AV technologies and beyond, from cables, connectors and brackets, right up to multi-screen installations, and the IT kit needed to network, power and control remote installations. Additional customer benefits are realised via the Exertis distribution engine, providing tailored services to AV resellers in terms of finance, warehousing and logistics to support projects and roll-outs, and hence helping many resellers pitch for business previously beyond their reach. The team are all highly experienced in the worlds of AV and IT and are driven to deliver the best service and support of any UK distributor. Passionate about technologies, vendors, and market opportunities they are positively evangelical when it comes to introducing non-AV resellers to the complementary world of AV. To stay ahead of the game and ensure customers get the best quality service available everyone is vendor and technology trained and the entire customer facing team enter the Exertis AV Academy and trained to Certified Technical Specialist level - a UK distributor first incidentally. Buying power across Europe means great price and availability is a given, and specialist services are available to support all customers as they bid for business. Pre-sales the team provide technology demonstrations, joint marketing, bid and tender support in terms of product specification, price, assistance with credit and roll-out logistics. Post-sales services cover customer training (if required), set-up services, follow-up visits and virtual warehousing.
NEW TO AV? In an increasingly convergent technology landscape, a unique pillar of Exertis growth has been enabling IT resellers to diversify into the complementary world of AV, bringing AV skills to IT resellers (and IT skills to AV resellers). In addition to the standard pre- and postsales services, Exertis assist new customers by introducing products, technologies and installation scenarios in the AV Enablement Suite or on-site, having CTS qualified staff aid system design and specification, helping build a new end customer base through joint marketing, and assisting with joint customer visits and post sales training.
SEEING IS BELIEVING Resellers and their customers are now able to experience AV in the real world through another industry first - the Exertis AV Enablement Suite. Showcasing the latest AV technologies in real-world environments, the suite is open to all resellers and their customers to come and see, interact and learn how to make the most from digital signage and interactive technologies, and highlights the IT infrastructure, control environments and componentry involved.
WHETHER NEW TO AV OR HIGHLY EXPERIENCED, THE EXERTIS AV TEAM ARE HERE TO HELP AND JUST A CALL AWAY. "AV is in our blood and our goal is simple - to have the best vendors, the best products, and the best service of any UK AV distributor. All delivered by the most knowledgeable people in the market." The PC market might still be declining but there is a bright spot on the horizon. At least, so say those analysts at IDC. Despite worldwide tablet shipments set to decline to 195 million units in 2016, down 5.9% from 2015, IDC forecasts that the overall market will grow beyond 2016 and continue to do so, thanks to growing demand for detachable tablets. Having accounted for just 8% of the tablet market in 2015, IDC claims 2-in-1 tablets will make up 30 percent of all tablets shipped by 2020. Market watcher, Canalys, reported a disastrous first quarter for the global PC market with tablets dragging the industry further into the doldrums: total global shipments of desktops, notebooks, twoin-ones and tablets totalled 101 million units in the first quarter of 2016, marking a 13% year-on-year drop to the lowest point since Q2 2011. (The EMEA market saw Q1 PC shipments shrink 15% year on year, with an 18% decline for notebooks). Only 2 in 1s bucked the trend growing 13% but tablets fell by 15% to just under 39 million units. Tablet shipments have seen six consecutive quarters of decline.

WHY CHOOSE A 2 IN 1? SHIFT IN OPERATING SYSTEM AND SCREEN SIZE dguide.com Iconography palette They are used to help visually identify in Mobile Services Networks Security Marketing IDC also predicted two trends for the tablet industry: more demand for devices with screen sizes of 9” or bigger, and a preference for Microsoft-based devices. Should IDC’s forecast prove accurate, Windows 2-in-1 tablets will take significant share away from both Android and iOS tablets. That’s good news for some, particularly as Exertis can offer resellers such a great choice in this sector, notably from Samsung with their Galaxy TabPro, a 12” detachable tablet that runs Windows 10, and is exclusive to Exertis, the Linx 1010 tablet, a 2 in 1 tablet with detachable keyboard. Also coming out in July the next Linx 2 in 1 device.

So what’s the appeal of a 2 in 1 device and why should customers choose one instead of a standard laptop because in many ways they offer virtually the same. The answer will depend on what you intend to use them for. The obvious advantage of a 2 in 1 is its flexibility and versatility. The opportunity to flip from a laptop to a tablet, from business mode to watching a movie is something a traditional clamshell design can’t compete with. The portability of your 2 in 1 is also a consideration, although there may not be a massive difference in weight. It may depend on the screen size of your 2 in 1 versus your laptop. Today, there is quite a choice on display size but if portability is important then around 11” seems to be a popular choice for your detachable. Whilst today’s 2 in 1s are more powerful than ever, if you are a user requiring processor intensive tasks, the speed and graphics power of a laptop may well be a deciding factor. Fortunately, with Windows 10, your 2 in 1 has access to the same full programs as your traditional laptop and the benefit of touch screen technology.

Of course with a 2 in 1, you could have one less device to worry about. As most people have a smartphone, it seems logical that a detachable makes the best companion device. For business people on the move, switching from laptop to a tablet that, for example, fits neatly on your in-flight tray, rather than a cumbersome notebook that’s likely to get crushed when a fellow passenger puts their seat back, is a major plus, whether you want to watch a movie or catch up on some work.

This point was endorsed by Eric Smith, senior analyst at Tablet and Touchscreen Strategies who stated: “2-in-1 detachable tablets have reached an inflection point in 2015 as computing needs continue to trend more and more mobile and tablets with Windows 10 can compete against iOS in the premium and high price bands and equally well against Android in the mid and lower price bands.” According to their report the 2 in 1 detachable tablets recorded a 379% growth year on year in 2015 and shipments of Windows tablets alone grew 59% for the same period.

FOR THE DIGITALLY EXCLUDED. THE ISSUE There are 14.8 million students (schools, colleges and universities) in the UK, 7.2 million of which are school children. It is estimated that 1.2 million are “digitally excluded” pupils i.e. without access to the internet at home. With 74% of all homework from schools set online, it is clear that many children are at a disadvantage. There has been a heated debate about this and two examples below from parents using netmums.com collaborate the concerns. “Anybody think this is really unfair? Some people don't have computers or the internet, depending where you live the net can be very slow. In times when people are using food banks I just think it's not a great idea to expect everyone to have online access at home”. “I think it's wrong to have homework online - especially for the younger kids. I don't have a computer just a little laptop which I don't want my kids using.” “Not every house has a computer to the specs that might be needed and it doesn't encourage their writing skills."
DIGITAL INC, LINX ET AL TO THE RESCUE Digital Inc is a specialist IT reseller that has teamed up with Exertis, Microsoft and EE to provide an exclusive discounted offer aimed at providing the most affordable mobile technology with superfast 4G broadband connectivity for parents, school children and students across the UK. The offer brokered by Digital Inc was seen by the company as an opportunity to help those disadvantaged by the digital age in which we live. Two bundles were made available incorporating either a 8” or 10” Linx tablet. The Linx 1010b comprises a 10.1” touch display with bluetooth detachable keyboard, 32GB of on-board storage for apps, downloads and files, a microSD slot (up to 64GB), seven hours of battery life and bluetooth connectivity. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) is an independent grant-making charity dedicated to breaking the link between family income and educational achievement, ensuring that children from all backgrounds can fulfil their potential and make the most of their talents. Their aim is to raise the attainment of children facing disadvantage by identifying and funding promising educational innovations that address the needs of disadvantaged children in primary and secondary schools in England. Schools can apply to the EEF on behalf of those parents that can’t afford the cost of purchasing the bundle.

In addition, pupils eligible for “free school meals”, looked after children, and children of services personnel are eligible for “pupil premium funding”. Schools are free to spend the pupil premium as they see fit. However, all funds are expected to be spent with the aim of increasing the achievement of disadvantaged pupils. The current levels are: Junior / primary: £1360 pa, Secondary: £960 pa, Looked after children: £1900 pa. Items purchased through this scheme can be purchased in the following way: by a school, college or university; by a parent or student privately or on a shared ownership with the school and the parents contributing 50% each, either as a one-off payment or an instalment plan, arranged with the school. With these funding opportunities and Digital Inc’s bundle, disadvantaged parents are exempt from credit checks, contracts, line rentals, and hidden costs.
PROMOTING THE BUNDLE Digital Inc are working with specific local authorities, schools and Microsoft to promote the bundle opportunity. Initially, it was launched at the BETT show supported by a specially built website with high SEO rankings: www.digitalinc.org. On the site, there is a great video from school kids talking about the Linx bundle: http:// www.digitalinc.org/images/Digitalinc.%202nd.mp4 At present, Digital Inc are working with Bracknell and Croydon local authorities. It is anticipated that once adopted by a couple of local authorities, others will follow as it becomes more known. Microsoft, EE and Exertis are promoting the bundle through their social media channels. This is expected to create some further noise about the proposition.

I can see the Linx having a place at the University of Surrey and I do recommend you get your hands on one for yourself to see whether your users would benefit. I think the package you've (Digital Inc) put together looks impressive, both in terms of value, but also convenience. A boxed product of a great device with connectivity will make it a simple purchasing decision for parents and it removes the worry of surprise bills." James Pickett Senior Systems Analyst, University of Surrey July 2015 Not only does this community based proposition provide help where it is most needed by facilitating digital inclusion to children, it also provides an advocacy for the future. These children will likely remain Windows users in the future.
