WELCOME FROM EXERTIS Welcome to our summer edition of Future Mobile. Of course it’s a time when many people are away on holiday so make sure your customers know about the essential gadgets that make travelling easier. You can find some highlighted in this issue. Whilst analysts predict a slowdown in the smartphone market, we believe there is still plenty of potential business for our customers. Indeed we have two articles in this issue, one addresses where we see opportunities in the B2B area and the other focuses on the importance of the accessories market where resellers can attach a wide variety of products ranging from batteries to insurance. We take a look at the mobile OS and see if there is any chance of anyone catching up with the big two in the market. We stay with Android when we examine whether the perception that Android phones are less secure than others is a reality or a misconception.

According to a report from BI Intelligence, mobile payments are gaining traction but the process is still a little slow to take off. It seems those consumers already engaged are using it for low cost purchases, typically £20 or less and retaining their credit card for higher ticket items. An Auriemma Consulting Group study in the US indicated that more than 25% of all eligible users have tried Apple Pay, Android Pay and/or Samsung Pay. The trend is likely to continue as integrated loyalty and rewards programs entice more users and more retailers install NFC-enabled terminals.

We already have some no phone zones on trains but could that be extended to restaurants. “Private yet public” calls have become so irritating that the majority of Brits want to see them banned, with eight out of ten saying they would welcome a ‘no phone zone’ in restaurants according to research from OpenTable. The Beefeater restaurant chain experimented with such a zone on Mother’s Day and some independents have tried to do the same, at least for talking but surfing and taking pictures is a double edge sword (OpenTable also found that 41% of people would post images of their food to social media). Unsurprisingly, 90% of Brits find it rude when others use their phones during a meal, yet a third ask for a Wi-Fi code before even ordering a meal.

According to Enders Analysis, advertising could account for about 50% of data usage for people reading articles on their smartphones. Programs such as Adblock Plus, AdFender and Popup Blocker Pro have long claimed to protect consumers from intrusive web ads that slow down browsers and hoover up personal data. Around 200Mn people globally are estimated to use such apps according to a news item from the BBC. And this tendency seems to be growing according to Smashing Magazine whose on-line survey indicated that ad-blocker usage had grown from 12% in 2012 to 55% today (as of March 2016).

Red Book © Exertis Retail Services Revenue / B.I.G Finance Television UC Devices Security Revenue / Finance

For businesses that depend on web advertising, ad blockers could cost an estimated $21.8Bn (£15Bn) in lost revenue a year, threatening publishers ability to provide content free at the point of use. Many publishers and ad-dependent websites adopt all kinds of techniques from introducing “light” paywalls to limiting access to the site to fully blocking ad-blocker users from accessing the content altogether. Mobile operator Three is the first to start pushing for network-level ad blocking and is running trials in June to test it. Guardian News and Media’s chief revenue officer Tim Gentry saying the move is “undermining” publisher revenues. “Three’s decision to push ahead with network-level ad blocking risks undermining the ad-funded digital economy by forcing publishers who invest heavily in original content to either pay Three for carriage or face having their business model seriously disrupted,” he said.

MOBILE SALES:

REPORTS OF THEIR DECLINE ARE EXAGGERATED? The general news in the mobile and national media is all about a slowing market where opportunities for growth may appear limited. We talk to Joe Officer, head of commercial mobile at Exertis about the scope for growth in the business market. Yes, there is a bit of a blip in the market for handsets, especially in the consumer segment, however, all markets are cyclical and the long-term outlook for mobile sales in the business segment is recognised by analysts as something to be extremely positive about. However, to fully understand the opportunity there are a couple of related things that resellers, whether traditional mobile or IT, need to consider to be able to take full advantage.

WHEN’S A PHONE NOT A PHONE? Phones are still a demand driven sale, especially in the consumer market where the tech savvy and early adopter customers crave the latest flagship models. However, within a mature mobile market it’s important to understand the distinction between a phone and a mobile device, and the added benefits this delivers in the B2B market.

Gone are the days of the phone as a simple communications device maybe with some additional functionality like email, browsing, and limited productivity applications, it needs to be viewed as an integral part of a mobility strategy for business, and an essential element in the business process. The sale then is not just about product but a solution – a business mobility solution where reseller partners can become involved in consultancy, product supply across the technology spectrum and services. The reason to shift thinking is simple – the phone is now as powerful as many PCs and hence can play a convergent role in mobilising a business. There is a relentless march in business to raise productivity, free itself from historic physical constraints - buildings, desks and the like and become more flexible, agile and adaptable to customer needs. The only way to achieve this is through a ground-up, endto-end mobility strategy with the device as the key enabler. It is happening, but slowly. Our vendors, like Samsung, Microsoft and LG recognise this and are driving the change, and I expect more to follow their line of thinking. Microsoft is on the front foot here, perhaps not surprising given they are the dominant business IT environment, with their platform agnostic apps and services, and the recent developments with Continuum for Phones. Lumia devices connect to screens, keyboards and devices wherever and whenever the user happens upon them and provide a fully scaled and proper working PC experience whilst still functioning as a phone, here the question of whether the phone

is a phone or PC goes away - it’s both. Samsung too have an ecosystem mind set with Galaxy mobility at its heart, one that places great value on device interoperability, security and support services for business – Android technology and apps are now embedded in products such as printers and interactive displays and are able to interact and collaborate with mobile devices, and there is a host of secure mobile productivity apps as part of their business services offering.

ChannelPeople Growth Office Gaming Clearance Heating & Cooling Home Entertainment Cloud Cloud Components Computing Heating & Cooling Lighting Servers Given historically in business a mobile phone has been just that, tied to airtime contracts, with limited security and very limited productivity capabilities it’s no surprise IT has been reluctant to take the next step. For many iPhones became the phone of choice given they came nowhere near the network aside from an email exchange. It is now a much changed world – devices are no longer umbilically linked to airtime contracts so partners don’t have to get involved there. Security is now less of an issue with many vendors having high grade security technology embedded to ensure the mobile device is not the weak link in a mobile strategy and device performance is not compromised either. Good examples are Samsung’s “baked in not added on” KNOX which protects the Galaxy device workspace whilst providing the freedom to maintain personal apps and data outside the ‘fort’, and LG’s GATE technology providing government grade, layered security for the platform, application and device. And in terms of capabilities the numerous applications available across platforms and devices, both standard business ones, Microsoft Office and Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, and others like Dropbox, plus legacy ones, whether server, hybrid or cloud based, mean the phone is now positioned at the heart of the business and network, not out on the perimeter. With the technology landscape now so capable and ready to free business, perhaps the strongest brake on advance is the business itself not being operationally ready to take that step. I think this is a great opportunity for partners to lead that change with a technology led conversation.

Strategy Analytics: business smartphone shipments grew > 7% CAGR over the last four quarters. The market is set to almost double by 2020. IDC “CYOD will gain more traction with enterprises around the world as they start to leverage mobility more strategically, where the need for security and management is higher.” Strategy Analytics: corporate-liable device growth will be at near double-digit levels over the next five years and faster than BYOD. BYOD is, maybe was, a big debate and whilst it provided flexibility, productive capability is limited and IT teams have a high overhead in terms of admin and high blood pressure from security concerns. With the advent of advanced security, like KNOX, apps that work across platforms, plus productivity tools like Samsung’s SideSync that allows the phone screen and files to be shared with and controlled from a PC, and Continuum for Phones that gives full Windows 10 functionality anywhere, on any form factor and on any size display, then IT teams can wrest back control and deliver a proper, managed and manageable mobile solution. My view is we can expect to see a swing to ‘choose your own device’ and the corporate-liable device market grow over the next few years.

ANDROID PARANOID? Headlines about a billion or more Android devices being vulnerable to the “the worst bug ever discovered Stagefright hack, and a thousand plus UK users being subject to a malicious attack every day, do nothing to dispel the notion that Android phones are less secure than those on other platforms. However security scares like this have not allayed the phenomenal popularity of the Android platform, but the repercussions of such headlines can be potentially serious, especially in the business market. Smaller enterprises especially may not have the resources and support to fully look into security and hence plump for the easiest and not necessarily the best option when it comes to mobile device selection. But is Android an insecure choice?

A quick look behind the headlines reveals some interesting pointers, about both the technologies involved and smartphone user behaviour, and point to some fundamental things that users and businesses can do to ensure their personal and corporate data is protected. Given how essential a phone now is, their life is secured. So what drives the headlines? One thing is news, obviously, and the Stagefright hack and others generate headlines which generate news which generate traffic in our digital world. Peer behind the headlines though and the reality is somewhat different.

Firstly, there is an enormous amount of intelligence, investment and activity in continually improving platform security, and the open design architecture of Android may be a strength when it comes to understanding potential threats – Google, for instance, scans 400 million devices a day gathering intelligence and has an active Android Security Rewards programme. Secondly, vulnerability does not equate to exploitation. For all the news around, for example Stagefright, no exploitation had been detected worldwide, from data collected by Google Verify Apps and SafetyNet. Thirdly on average, 0.5% of devices have Potential Harmful Applications and users are ten times as likely to have one if the app is downloaded outside of Google Play. So the majority of issues appear to be caused by behaviour outside of the Google secured environment. This infers user behaviour is a key to opening up a device to a potential vulnerability and exploitation. This picture emerges even more when you look at basic user smartphone behaviour and attitudes towards security. Studies over the years have shown a majority of users (up to 64%) do not even lock their screen, so are immediately open to attack, and the number of secure users dwindles dramatically when strength of passwords, use of additional security tools and applications are considered. One of the insights from Google showed that for Nexus devices with a fingerprint sensor, lock screen use went up 64% and was evident on 91% of phones, another example of insecurity being rooted in behaviour, this time complacency, rather than technology. Change behaviour then and Android’s security perception diminishes, if not vanishes. Customers, especially consumers, need to be shown that the following simple steps will considerably enhance the security of their device, so make sure you give this best practise advise for your customers:

• Lock the front door - use a lock code, either PIN, pattern, password or facial recognition. • Use two-step verification. • Activate a tracker and enable remote wipe • Only download apps from Google Play, never via SMS • Keep apps and firmware updated and beware apps that require access to personal details. Lock apps that contain personal data. • Never reply to texts from unknown sources requesting personal information. • Beware of insecure Wi-Fi, and never shop or bank on a public network. • Physically make it hard to steal a phone – keep it out of sight and reach. • Use a third-party security app, like McAfee or Bullguard to watch your back (incidentally Bullguard partners get a lifelong share of a customer’s revenue).

And for the business community? In reality there is very little to fear. Initiatives like Google Play for Work where businesses securely deploy and manage enterprise-grade apps, across all of their users help keep the platform secure. Plus, many manufacturers now have hardened security built into phones. Samsung’s KNOX keeps personal apps and data separate from work ones, the work part remaining under the control of the business, and LG’s GATE (Guarded Access To Enterprise) provides government-grade security. For the future, Android N (aired at the last Google I/O) adds new levels of security: File-level encryption, media server hardening and seamless updates, and large financial institutions are currently testing Trust API, an initiative that looks to make passwords obsolete. Using phone sensors to continually collect personal biometric data – voice, facial recognition, even how you move, type and swipe, and the particular times and locations you might use an app – it derives a ‘trust score. Low trust means low or no access. Is there an unfair and unfounded perception around Android security? Perhaps it’s appropriate the last word goes to the trusted experts at Android Central - “It's an old wives' tale that Android isn't secure. It's only not secure if you don't bother to make it secure.” In other words, leaving the house unlocked with the lights on and windows open is a sure fire way to attract an unwelcome visitor. MICROSOFT’S BIG BANG MOMENT UNLEASHES BUSINESS FREEDOM Hot-desking, mobile working, activity based working, remote working, agile working - all terms used to describe changes happening in the modern workplace, where being shackled to one desk, in one building is fast becoming the exception rather than the norm. The growth in the use and development of mobile and digital technology - smartphones being central to us 24/7 and the adoption of Windows 10 devices – has had significant implications for the world of work. Specifically, a growing demand for workplace flexibility. A strong statement and we’ve been here before many will say, but, given Windows’ dominance in the workplace, this time there are a couple of fundamental, yet significant differences.

tablets, 2in1s, laptops, desktops, Surface Hubs with huge screens, and giant servers. With common technology and code shared across PCs, Xbox and phones to connect accessories (keyboards, mice, Xbox controllers). Continuum for Phones harnesses today’s phone power to drive two screens – its own and a connected one, and it is here the universal nature of apps built for Windows 10, comes to life. An app built for Windows 10 will scale automatically on any device or screen. Continuum allows the phone to behave like a PC and a smartphone simultaneously and separately. With Windows 10 adoption increasing rapidly throughout 2016-17* now is the right time to understand what Continuum for Phones can do to set organisations of all sizes free.

Windows 10 and, specifically, Continuum for Phones, are the catalysts to set the chain reaction going. Windows 10 is universal and runs on a vast array of form factors including smartphones,

CASE STUDY

“The vision of the phone in your pocket with your data & your apps being able to light up any mouse, keyboard and screen wherever you go giving you the full power of a PC experience” Joe Belfiore - Windows Team

CONTINUUM FOR PHONES • A built in Windows 10 feature. • Connect any Continuum Lumia phone, via the Microsoft Display Dock, to any keyboard, mouse (or use the phone as a Touchpad) and screen for a scaled up phone powered PC experience. • Work, view content and play games, on the pre-installed phone Windows apps all scaling instantly and seamlessly to the big screen. • Call, message and update social media on the phone separately. • Remote Desktop enables access to traditional Windows apps, remote PC, server or cloud apps running on a remote computer and utilises that PC's full power. As of March ’16 the Microsoft Build Developer event highlighted some new features that will enable greater real-time, productive, mobile working: • Azure Remote Apps gives access to specific cloud apps via Azure and with app icons pinned to the Lumia start screen. • Project Continuum for Phones to Windows 10 allows projection wirelessly to any Windows 10 PC to use the local device as a personal dumb terminal in a window independent of the device’s Desktop and OS. • Control games on the phone with an Xbox controller for those times to relax. • Laptop dock for Continuum for Phones needs no dock and uses a specific laptop for Continuum as a screen and keyboard, the phone connecting via USB. This means the phone can be used 100% of the time as a productivity tool.

For business users that are Windows based, which is pretty much the vast majority, the technology, tools, IT systems and infrastructure are now all in place to set businesses free and rocket productivity skywards, the only thing holding it back is the business itself. There are several offers and incentives for business customers to better understand and introduce Lumia and Continuum for Phones. Research and Markets, a consultancy firm, last year predicted that the global enterprise mobile app development services market will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.4% over the period 2014-2019. Gartner predicted last year that by the end of 2017, market demand for mobile app development services will outstrip available development, growing at least five times faster than internal IT organisations can deliver them.

Employers in a wide range of vertical markets are already piloting and deploying wearables: emergency personnel, and search and rescue teams could all benefit from the tracking features. Besides just tracking, a warehouse picker in a logistics centre that deploys “smart shelfs” and sensors connected to an enterprise app could also relay important information on stocking. An environmental disaster team required to wear protective clothing whilst carrying out duties could receive important information on the job.

Certainly, apps that help employees out in the field better communicate with their customers by having content easily to hand or digitising paper-based work create a competitive advantage for their business. Field service personnel that can reference up-to-date product data, create proposals on the fly and gain an order and provide data for an invoice to be created without the need to return to the office are obvious examples but there are many across a range of vertical markets. Exertis has firsthand experience of this creating a number of bespoke applications for businesses using their award winning Linx tablet. A TWO-HORSE RACE IN MOBILE OS? According to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 report, the competition between Android and iOS leaves no space for alternative operating systems including Windows and analysts tend to agree. The latest numbers from research firm Gartner reveals that the smartphone industry continues to be largely a two-horse race. These two operating systems held a 98.4% worldwide market share in the final quarter of 2015. What’s more the gap between first and second continues to widen with Android cementing its pole position with an 80.7% share, compared to 17.7% for iOS. The fourth quarter

has historically been the most successful for iPhone and Android based smartphone sales due to the holiday shopping season. Windows share actually fell from 2.8% to 1.1%, despite the launch of Windows 10 smartphones. Blackberry OS fell even further behind at 0.2%. Indeed Blackberry seems to have migrated to Android with the launch of its Blackberry Priv in order to solve the existing App-Gap with its CEO John Chen strongly implying that this is the future for the company’s phones.

COMPETITION IS FLAGGING Windows Phone was seen as being the closest platform to being a realistic competitor but it has had mixed fortunes. In the UK, it has enjoyed some success with a 2.3% increase year on year at the end of last year according to researcher Kantar Worldpanel ComTech but suffered in other geographies. That increase points to a decent performance from Microsoft’s Lumia 950 and 950 XL Indeed, Microsoft still remains the only real prospect of any challenge to the big two and it may yet happen with the success of Windows 10. Developers that create Windows apps for the desktop can adapt them to the phone. If not Windows, then it’s pretty certain there is no-one else going to make an impact in a market which sold a record 1.44Bn smartphones in 2015 according to data from Strategy Analytics. (Apple and Samsung shipped over 550Mn smartphones followed by Huawei, Lenovo-Motorola and Xiaomi). Blackberry seems to be moving away from its own operating system. Firefox OS phones are out of the market. Jolla wasn’t at MWC this year but it did launch Aqua Fish, an entry level smartphone running Sailfish OS and produced by Intex. Samsung’s Tizen wasn’t promoted at MWC, raising questions over its future. Ubuntu – the Linux based software developed by Canonical was the only alternative OS making it to the congress this year. They also launched MEIXU Pro 5, a new high end, mid-priced device running Ubuntu. However, none of these look likely to make much of an impact overall. NOKIA TO FEATURE AGAIN Nokia, once the largest mobile manufacturer in the world, is staging a comeback with the release of a range of feature phones and tablets. It has signed a 10 year deal with newly formed Finnish based company, HMD, owned by a private equity firm and Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile. Under the deal, Nokia will receive royalty payments from HMD for sales of Nokia branded devices with HMD responsible for production. Nokia had sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2014 for £4.6Bn but now has the rights to use the Nokia brand name on feature phones and tablets. HMD is reported to be investing $500Mn over the next three years in marketing support for the devices which will run on Google’s Android operating system. Microsoft will continue to operate in the smartphone space with its Windows based Lumia range. Whilst the feature phone market has declined in a market dominated by smartphones, shipments were still in excess of 400Mn in 2015 and there is still a relatively high demand for feature phones, particularly in emerging markets. Competition is fierce but Nokia has a strong brand and it will be interesting to see if it can once again feature as a leader in this market. Sources: Daily Telegraph, BBC, Forbes,

FUTURE

BE SMART AND LOOK BEYOND PHONE SALES At a time when even entry-level smartphones can feature unibody metal designs and decent cameras, distinguishing a device through its hardware alone becomes next to impossible. If smartphone technology has reached the point where consumers can no longer distinguish upgraded features from older ones, innovation and opportunity will be less about the phone itself and more about the ecosystems that rely on it. These can be quite diverse from VR to wearables, and IoT to personal finance. VR headsets from LG and Samsung are tied to the smartphone. In wearables, such as smart watches and health / fitness trackers, the smartphone plays a key role in fuelling these peripheral devices and synching the online experience. In IoT the smartphone is increasingly becoming the controlling device for a diverse range of smart applications. In personal finance, there has been a greater adoption of mobile payment services like Google Wallet, Apply Pay and Samsung Pay, which effectively turns the smartphone into a credit card and to a wide range of accessories and peripheral products that can add incremental revenue streams and profit to mobile resellers and dealers.

ACCESSORIES TO BE INDUSTRY DISRUPTOR Today, we're staring down a future where accessories will hold more intrigue and potential for disruption than smartphones by themselves. The mobile phone accessories market has grown substantially in recent years with immense opportunities due to the penetration of smartphones and tablets. The global mobile phone accessories market is expected to expand at a CAGR of nearly 7% and reach US$ 121.72Bn in value by 2025 according to analysts Future Market Insights. Categories include batteries, chargers, headphones, memory cards, portable speakers and protective cases. Some of these products are featured on page 27 of this issue. However, there are also opportunities in security and insurance highlighted in this article, to drive incremental revenue streams for Exertis customers. For more info on any of these smart attach products' contact your account manager.

ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES TO BOOST SALES Peace of mind for your customers, extra margin for you. That’s what you get by adding MendIT to your sale of mobile devices. MendIT is an easy to buy insurance, warranty and repair solution that simplifies the time consuming return mercahsnise activation (RMA) process for everyone involved. Every MendIT product has a SKU making the choice of option simple for the reseller. What’s more this service can be white-labelled.

A good security app can make a big difference to your customer and to your margin when you attach McAfee Mobile Security to a sale of a mobile device running Android or BlackBerry. Here’s why it makes sense for your customer. It provides an Antivirus Guard against viruses, spyware and malicious websites, let’s you search and shop securely on-line, stay safe on social media, and connect to wi-fi with confidence. Its anti-theft feature locates, tracks and sends an alarm using an online portal. Your device can be locked and wiped to prevent misuse of your personal data. It’s even possible to get a snapshot of the person holding your lost device with CaptureCam. Finally, it protects your privacy by letting you know what information your apps are collecting and whether you’d like that information to be kept. Your customers run the same risks on their phone or tablet as they would with a computer, whether they’re installing apps, surfing the web, banking, using email or shopping online. There’s a rapidly growing tide of malware aimed at mobile devices and designed to secretly control calls and texts, and steal credit card details and other personal information. BullGuard Mobile Security not only safeguards a device from online threats like viruses and spyware, it also backs up valuable data in the cloud. If your customer’s device is ever lost or stolen it can be remotely locked, wiped and tracked. By becoming a BullGuard partner, you can participate in BullGuard’s revenue share program. This means you’ll receive a share of the online revenue your customers generate in the future.
