Welcome to the latest issue of Future Mobile magazine. This issue is packed full of product information from our extensive vendor portfolio, topical features and industry news. It’s not long before the industry embarks on its annual migration to Barcelona for the 2016 Mobile World Congress (22nd to 25th February). If you have never attended and wonder what all the fuss is about, our mobile team predict what’s going to be the hot news at this year’s event. Coincidently, this year is when roaming charges are set to become more affordable. In 2017, they will be scrapped altogether and there will be no difference in charges between home and abroad. We take a look at how resellers can help their customers through this transition period and ensure they get the best advice to mitigate against unexpected and exorbitant charges.
for a tablet or Smartphone first, instead of a laptop or desktop for all online activities, we take a look at the implications for businesses and how mobile manufacturers are supporting the security challenges posed by a mobile workforce. In addition, we highlight some of the accessories enabling tablet and Smartphone users to be even more productive on the move. We are proud to offer our customers a great choice of mobile devices and we take a look at how Tier 2 vendors are trying to disrupt the mobile market, dominated by Samsung and Apple, by bringing something new to the table. Enjoy the read and a happy new year from all of us at Exertis.

It has been widely reported in the news that Google has been planning to fold its Chrome operating system into Android, following a report in the Wall Street Journal. However, Google has refuted the rumours. Google’s Chrome OS runs on laptop and desktop computers, while Android powers 1.4 billion Smartphones, tablets, and watches. If the two were merged, the next generation of Android would run on personal computers as well as mobile devices, giving PC users access to third party apps from Google Play. Whether Google will indeed follow in the footsteps of Microsoft’s strategy with Windows 10, or keep things separate as Apple has with iOS and Mac Os, remains to be seen.

EE meanwhile launched Euro Pass in summer 2015. This gives customers the option of unlimited calls and texts and a data allowance, with 4G where available, each day when abroad in Europe for just £4 per day. EE Pay Monthly, SIM Only and small business customers can use Euro Pass, while 4GEE Extra plan users who already get unlimited calls and texts in 39 Europe Zone destinations can add the Euro Data Pass for 100MB data for £3 per day. EE is also allowing customers to roam not only on 2G and 3G, but 4G as well. EE recently extended access to its super-fast 4G network for customers travelling to 16 countries. The new roaming agreements mean that business users can work on the move, use social networking, maps in foreign cities, and find places to eat and stay while they are on the road, quickly and with ease. Customers are able to purchase a 4G data roaming bundle, which means they can roam while abroad without fear of bill shock.
operators make the transition from 4G to 5G roaming. Supported by the latest GFK Telecom Markets report Q1 2015, stated 59% of the World telecom market is connected to 4G. For the UK specifically, 4G is especially in demand and, therefore it should also be accessible from other countries for UK subscribers. Exertis sees EE as something of a trailblazer in this respect, as it is already making 4G available to business users and consumers alike.

• See if their mobile operator can add on an overseas data package to their contract so they can connect while away • Advise them on the current European Commission charges from now to June 2017 so they stay in the know • If they feel uncomfortable with roaming charges, tell them to avoid it altogether by switching data off while away, or only connecting through Wi-Fi hotspots
The beauty of roaming in 2017 will be that there will be no price difference between home and abroad, which will make way for new services and applications for ‘roamers’, who will be free to access the Internet wherever they are. on your Smartphone, which is fine for short communication in order to edit and manoeuvring documents, will require a physical keyboard. This isn’t a one size fits all scenario and there are various opposing concerns to be considered. However, due to the accelerating rate at which technology evolves, high end Smartphones are set to handle any task with features such as 4k streaming and seamless multitasking. With users preferring to take advantage of fully-fledged applications on PCs and with the emergence of smartwatches alongside Smartphones, the biggest growth is expected to be in tablets of eight inches and above.
RESPONDING TO CAPABILITY DEMANDS Mobile devices pose security and management challenges for employers. Employees are more connected, more available and more productive than ever, with the ability to work anytime from anywhere becoming a staple business requirement. Employees want to easily access their company email and network from their favourite device in hand, this means that IT departments need to protect enterprise data and infrastructures from misuse. The mobile workforce makes this challenging for organisations as inevitably, any outgoing data leaving the office is accessed and stored on multiple devices and is run on networks that could compromise security. It is an unstoppable tide and companies that recognise the benefits rather than the risks as well as implement a comprehensive enterprise mobility management strategy are likely to gain a competitive advantage. Employees will continue to demand a certain level of enterprise mobility and companies will need to respond accordingly. Exertis is on the forefront of defining mobility within B2B. OEMs are now expanding their strategies from traditional product hardware to focusing on personalisation, storage functions, app development and ecosystems of products that work in sync; enabling the easier work-based connection. LG Guarded Access To Enterprise (GATE) is an all-in-one toolkit for the B2B environment. In an era where mobile devices are increasingly used for business needs, LG GATE provides peace of mind to both corporate IT managers and employees. With powerful capabilities and government-grade security, LG GATE creates a safe, efficient mobile work environment for all users. Windows 10 for mobile includes a bevy of features, from Continuum, an enhanced Cortana, and Microsoft Edge, to a wider PC accessories range. Microsoft Continuum technology is a new way to collaborate, share and work; it tells Windows 10 what device the user is on and allows the operating system to configure itself to suit that device. Continuum is giving rise to greater need and demand for Microsoft peripherals, such as Bluetooth keyboards and mice, as these devices will be able to communicate within the ecosystem and make everything simpler for the user and the business. Meanwhile Microsoft Edge gives you new ways to find things, read and write on the web, plus help from Cortana where you need it. From saving your own personalised reading list to doodling directly onto web pages, Microsoft Edge is there to help, and if you need a little more information, Cortana will find it for you. with key certification protects users, as well as extended user and security policies with further hardened security for added protection. Sony has also built in biometric fingerprint unlock and enhanced Personal Information Management ( PIM). Also, business users can access industry-leading apps, including Office 365, Dropbox and Office Suite. To accompany the wide range of devices and apps now available in our portfolio, accessories are being given a high tech makeover. Microsoft’s Universal Foldable Keyboard is the perfect travel companion; it is ultra-thin, lightweight, and compact, so it can travel anywhere to allow users to get more done on tablets and Smartphones. While the LG Rolly keyboard is optimised for portability with a four-segment folding design that can be held in one hand; it even provides ease of use when typing thanks to its built-in stand, designed for anything from a Smartphone to a 10-inch tablet.

4 MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS PREDICTIONS Heads of Mobile at Exertis give their predictions on the hot news for Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona.
CONSOLIDATING MOBILE NETWORK POWERHOUSES Simon Woodman, Sales Director for Mobile at Exertis UK “At Mobile World Congress this year I expect to see a lot of news related to the further consolidation of mobile networks globally. Already in 2015 we have seen the merger of BT and EE, plus O2 and Three in the UK. This is set to continue throughout Europe, and it will really create some powerhouses in the mobile arena. Not only that, but many mobile companies are today diversifying into fixed broadband and TV services, so there is a strong triple play element that I expect to hear more about at the show. “On devices, Apple is changing the way people are able to pay and upgrade to new iPhones in the US, with its iPhone Upgrade Programme. Apple allows users to get a new iPhone every year by paying for the device in monthly instalments; this is a game-changing idea and I can really see it having interesting repercussions in the wider market. I think we will see other mobile device manufacturers coming up with similar plans at the show.”
MOBILE
FASTER CHARGING AND DATA CONNECTIVITY Joe Officer, Head of Wearable Technology and Accessories at Exertis UK “The major trend I believe we will hear a lot about at Mobile World Congress is regarding accessories is USB Type-C. This defines the next generation USB connector; it will provide high speed wired local connectivity for consumers, plus the PC, mobile, automotive and IoT industries. It’s really exciting for the accessories market and will provide the most convenient means for fast charging and faster data connectivity.” “I also expect to hear more about Microsoft Continuum technology as a new way to collaborate, share and work. Software tool Continuum tells Windows 10 what device the user is on and allows the operating system to configure itself to suit that device. It will give rise to greater need and demand for Microsoft peripheral accessories, such as Bluetooth keyboards and mice.”
TIME FOR TIER 2 SMARTPHONE VENDORS TO RISE Ewan Davies, Head of Devices at Exertis UK “With the show two weeks earlier this year due to an early Easter, there may be fewer devices launched at the show. However I still expect all manufacturers to showcase their hero products, perhaps with only minor tweaks to current models, such as slightly faster, or a slight improvement on specification. With a number of Tier 1 vendors focusing on mid to high end devices now, 2016 will be a fantastic opportunity for our smaller partners to really make an impression, especially on the UK market. If somebody can take a new jump at innovation, they have a very good chance of success; take Wileyfox for example.” “We will also see lots of news at Mobile World Congress around increasing ecosystems, particularly within the continued development of Android and the Windows 10 platform. Both will be looking at ways to break the shackles of iOS in both the enterprise and consumer market.”

CASE STUDY: SECURING LONG ROAD COLLEGE’S BYOD ENVIRONMENT Long Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge is one of the largest in East Anglia. It prides itself on high levels of examination success and making learning as easy and effective as possible for its students. The college’s network includes 50 servers half virtual and half physical - 1,200 PCs, 300 laptops and 150 Macs for the 2,200 students based on the campus. With the proliferation of laptops, tablets and mobile devices being used in education amongst pupils, the senior management team at

Long Road decided a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy would aid them in achieving this vision, make the college more attractive to prospective students and ultimately save money in the long term. Jason Dear, IT services manager of Long Road Sixth Form College, explained, “We discussed purchasing tablets for student use but the cost, inconvenience and management overhead was prohibitive. In order to roll out this project successfully, we needed a new WiFi system that had single SSID coverage in every classroom and common room on the campus, but critically, we needed visibility and control over the connected devices.”
WHY FORESCOUT? Long Road needed a solution that could seamlessly integrate into their existing infrastructure; give real-time visibility of the devices connected and control applications such as peer-to-peer and instant messaging to help increase the security of the network and productivity of the students. With a need to deploy a solution quickly, without any disruptions, Dear looked to other colleges for information and recommendations on network access control (NAC) vendors such as ForeScout CounterACT™ and Bradford Networks. Dear found that long-time IT security provider, Foursys, had made an announcement regarding a partnership with US-based nextgeneration NAC solution provider, ForeScout Technologies. Foursys quickly provided Long connected endpoints, including BYOD devices. Control Provides the control the college needs to allow BYOD systems to access the Internet and appropriate internal systems, while also allowing IT to block unwanted and unproductive

applications without removing them from the machine. CounterACT also ensures each connected device is compliant with set policy regulations. Secure BYOD Dear commented, “NAC solutions are still fairly new and their capabilities relatively unknown. We wanted to give students more than just Internet access without having to manage complex firewall rules and devices. We’ve done that safe in the knowledge that their access to our network is safe and their device secure and we plan to give them more and more access to systems as time goes on. I’m delighted that we chose ForeScout and I can’t recommend it highly enough for BYOD deployments.”
RESULTS • Real-time visibility and control of all endpoints including faculty and student BYOD devices • Deployed rapidly and seamlessly integrated with existing network infrastructure, including new Wi-Fi hardware • Increased students and faculty satisfaction resulting from easy-to-use access forms and a secure network • Ease of use and low overhead on IT support time “I’m delighted that we chose ForeScout and I can’t recommend it highly enough for BYOD deployments.” Jason Dear, IT Services Manager, Long Road Sixth Form College.

THE RISE OF THE AFFORDABLE SMARTPHONE Tier 2 Smartphone vendors will be a force to be reckoned with in 2016. Altogether these manufacturers held 63.2% of global market share in the third quarter of 2015, totalling shipments of 223,195, according to research firm, Gartner. With Samsung and Apple occupying the top two spaces in the Smartphone shipment table, Chinese vendors Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi took the next three places respectively, and other brands, from KAZAM to Vector Watch, are heating up the competition. Resellers in today’s marketplace cannot ignore the power of Tier 2 vendors, who are set to become household names over 2016 as British consumers from all walks of life look for highly featured phones using the latest technologies, without the larger price tag of the Tier 1 manufacturers.
RISE OF THE TIER 2 VENDORS Many of these Tier 2 vendors bring something unique to the table thanks to their heritage in industries other than mobile. For instance, the team behind new smartwatch supplier, Vector are from the traditional watch space, while ZTE is a globally renowned telecoms equipment manufacturer. These varied and differing backgrounds give many Tier 2 Smartphone manufacturers a fresh perspective on the mobile landscape.
STRONG SUPPORT THROUGH EXERTIS Through the breadth of our portfolio and ability to spot innovation, Exertis is proactively providing support to the channel and creating new sales opportunities through championing these businesses. We take pride in constantly scouring the market for competitive mobile products to add to our portfolio which deliver a new level of value and innovation to both the customer and the end user, whether that be low prices, features or service wraps. Among other strong Tier 2 vendors in the Exertis portfolio is ZTE Mobile Devices. This mobile powerhouse has been in action for 17 years, shipping over 600 million devices during that time and has 60 million active ZTE device users today. This challenger brand listens to its customers’ needs, and the company is now making exceptionally feature-rich devices that can hit incredible UK price points.
TAKING A FRESH PERSPECTIVE Wiley Fox, a new trailblazer, differentiates its devices in partnership with the operating system, Cyanogen, an enhanced version of Android. Wileyfox is the first mobile manufacturer to offer the new commercial variant of Cyanogen 12.1 within Europe; Exertis sees this as a major new technology that we recognise for its future potential. We expect the user base of Cyanogen and therefore Wileyfox’s device sales to grow exponentially, and we are helping our resellers to get these exciting products out to end users. Meanwhile, KAZAM is a revolutionary for the Smartphone market, as it offers not only cutting-edge technology, but also a real handson approach to customer service and value-add that no one else has surpassed. We see KAZAM as driving a new era in mobile for a different kind of value proposition, based on functionality and an attractive service wrap proposition, from easy screen replacement, to being on hand to answer questions on device functionality. With the most cutting-edge of mobile technology now readily available from Tier 2 device providers, consumers and business users no longer have to justify the expense of a device from a Tier 1 manufacturer; they can have the same build quality, the same exciting features, and the same experience, but at a fraction of the cost. This opens up the market for new users of all ages, while giving businesses an opportunity to provide employees with everything they need in mobility, without breaking the bank. Exertis is constantly focused on how we respond to the market, to allow our channel partners to evolve and stay ahead of the game. We are always looking at avenues to follow to entice customers and drive innovation within our portfolio, keeping us and our channel partners ahead of the competition. We are happy to support our resellers with any opportunity. Please talk to us for more details. The Wileyfox and Kazam ranges are available now.

GET BACK IN SHAPE AFTER CHRISTMAS Christmas brings many things; parties, presents, and Now That’s What I Call Christmas CDs playing incessantly in shops across the country. But when the tinsel comes down and the mania of January’s sales abates, people are often left with a tangible reminder of the holiday excesses, one they see every time they step on the weighing scales. Mince pies, chocolates, roast dinners, and the odd gallon of Prosecco leave their mark, but thankfully technology is at hand to help your customers regain their fitness and ditch the elasticated waistbands.
FITNESS TRACKERS & SMART WATCHES One of the most popular and well known health categories is that of Fitness Trackers. The advantages for customers are easy to see, as these small devices prove simple to use, give detailed accounts of a person’s physical activities, often have waterproof casings, involve no ongoing cost, set fun challenges to motivate the wearer, and link up with most modern Smartphones. Products such as the Fitbit Charge and Microsoft Band Version 2 are strong examples of the kind of functionality and convenience that make this category so attractive to buyers looking to improve their general health. In fact, recent market reports predict that the wearables sector as a whole, including smartwatches, is set to grow through 2016. Global Analysts GFK state that eight million consumers are expected to purchase a device of some kind in the first eight months of the year, with an equivalent market value of £2 billion. Smartwatches should play an increasingly prominent role in this area as they offer all the benefits of a fitness tracker, plus a range of extra features that complement Smartphones. Consumer research has also revealed that the higher price isn’t a barrier for devices like the LG Urbane and Apple Watch, with one in four people in the 24-35yr age bracket willing to pay, on average, £332 for a device.
XBOX ONE FITNESS With the cost of gyms still remaining prohibitive for some, and the public nature being another drawback, an Xbox One is a cost-effective alternative that can be recommended to customers. Thanks to the Kinect sensor and built-in Fitness suite, users can have individually tailored lessons from some of the World’s most popular fitness instructors, including Jillian Michaels, Tracy Anderson, and Shaun T. Rather than just a video, Xbox Fitness tracks your movements in real-time, then feeds back performance and technique results. Users complete challenges to progress, giving a sense of achievement and fun, while continually improving their fitness. To access the Xbox Fitness app, customers will need an Xbox Live Gold account, presenting sales staff with the opportunity to sell vouchers in-store alongside the console itself.
DIET EBOOKS Enter any bookstore in January and you’ll notice a sea of diet and fitness books on display. It’s no coincidence that these titles sell so well after Christmas, and retailers adding a few choice titles to sell at the till point, or even offering eBook editions online, could use the conversations to point towards some of the above products and their potential benefits. Of course health and fitness isn’t restricted solely to recovering from seasonal overindulgence, and the run up to summer could prove equally successful for wily stores, with customers preparing for their time on the beach. As the old adage goes, health isn’t just for Christmas.

HOW TO START THE YEAR STRONG First start to look back. Dust off that business plan you wrote and access what you’ve accomplished in the last year. What no business plan? As Yogi Berra once famously said “If you don’t know where you are going, you are likely to end up somewhere else.” Evaluating how your business has performed is the first step towards planning for the year ahead. So how did you perform against those goals you set, what went well but most importantly where were the gaps and why didn’t you achieve those objectives? Consider now whether those gaps are worth pursuing and finish what you’ve started or cross them off if they aren’t going to make a difference to your business. A new year suggests fresh prospects, new opportunities, change and innovation. Nothing wrong with that, but be realistic in the goals you set and create milestones for what you can achieve in the short term and what you can aim for in the long term. A fiveyearplan is equally as valuable as what you want to achieve in the next three months. If you don’t have all the tools and services you need now, take a look at what’s available to you from a third party like Exertis. Taking advantage of white label services may well keep you a valued customer and doesn’t require additional resource and capital expenditure.
plan. Your existing customers are a valuable asset. It’s easier and less costly to retain your customers than acquire new ones. However, when was the last time you took the time to really understand your customers’ business and their requirements? It’s important to service what they need rather than what you want to sell them. A profitability audit can also tell you if you are retaining and acquiring the right type of customers for your business. At the same time, analyse your strengths and weaknesses with a SWOT. Take a look at your competition and ask yourself why your customers might be tempted to use them instead of you and likewise the benefits you offer to your customers over your competition. You may well find some gaps worth filling. Of course don’t forget your employees. In many cases, they will be your key differentiator. Set aside some time to ensure they receive the right education and have the skills to compete in a fast moving environment. Take advantage of the training opportunities that already exist in your business network and keep your employees up to speed with the latest technologies. Most importantly, ensure you have the right communication flow so that your employees understand the company goals, are kept abreast of performance and recognise the part they play in driving the business forward.
CUSTOMERS & EMPLOYEES: YOUR MOST VALUABLE ASSETS
Evaluating past performance and creating new goals for your business is a valuable exercise and one that you should perform every year. However, don’t treat it as a one-off task. Assessing your business and checking on your goals is something you need to do regularly throughout the year to ensure that you are on track. Make adjustments as necessary.
Remember the two most important relationships you have in business are with your customers and your employees. It’s important to recognise and collaborate with both in formulating your business
So for a strong start to the year, evaluate and plan now. Then regularly monitor and communicate. It’s one resolution that’s worth keeping for your business.

THE STORY OF LINX In November 2014, Exertis mobile sales director, Simon Woodman, welcomed the latest trailblazer into the Exertis mobile channel; the Linx tablet range.
OUR STRATEGY The strategy behind this new range of devices was to deliver a high quality, affordable tablet brand accompanied with the latest innovations, at affordable price points that could serve all resellers and their customers easily. Woodman commented: “We were looking for that something extra to bring to our customers. We already had a strong relationship portfolio with the OEMs, but we wanted our own credible solution that we could nurture and grow and make our own. Retailers in the UK came to Exertis in 2014 demanding an alternative to the many Android tablets available. They told us they wanted a Microsoft Windows tablet that would be able to compete directly against the Android tablet price point on their shelves in time for Christmas.” “We came up with the concept of Linx and then went to China to develop our value chain so we could create this range. Working closely with Microsoft and Intel, we designed, sourced, manufactured and distributed our own Windows tablet under the brand name Linx. The Linx range of tablets and accessories today showcase the strength and integrity of Microsoft’s software in a beautifully designed package that will serve both consumers and business users alike,” added Woodman.
OUR VISION Linx, which recently celebrated its first birthday, has been created with the vision that software is the focus of the device and the hardware is designed to complement it; Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are the core of each Linx tablet, and the devices are fully upgradeable with the latest updates and applications. Linx means that at last customers are able to purchase high quality hardware with the latest software and capabilities to meet their requirements, without a hefty premium price tag, making them an ideal consumer or fleet purchase. Woodman continued: “Exertis has grounded Linx in the UK retail market and we are now rapidly expanding our strategy by offering bespoke tablet devices to business customers. Thanks to Exertis’ relationships with Microsoft, Intel and our supply chain business in China, and through our ongoing work with some of the key systems integrators and resellers in the UK, we have seen a phenomenal response to our tailored approach to mobile technology in the enterprise space.” Ankar Sandhu, Microsoft devices and mobility lead for retail, when in 2014 a fleet of 4,000 store managers required a Windows tablet device and chose Linx: “The nature of the price point, aesthetic form factor and ability to do what the Grocer needed it to do, meant the customer has chosen to use Linx 8 for its store managers. Linx 8 fitted the store manager profile, giving them the mobility they need, allowing them to be more mobile in-store to serve customers.”
OUR CUSTOMERS Since early 2014, Exertis realised that the fast-rising appeal of Linx to business users was opening another door for us and Microsoft. From offering Linx tablets designed specifically to appeal to consumers, another line for business users and yet another focused on the education sector for both students and teachers, we began a bespoke build and branding service for enterprise customers that has ignited great excitement wherever it is seen. Our customers include market-leading brands across retail, grocery, manufacturing, utilities, professional services and transportation.
OUR ROADMAP Exertis is now welcoming the two latest additions to the Linx family; the Tough Tab and Vison. Tough Tab is strong and built to withstand any environmental condition, while Vision is designed to deliver the best mobile handheld gaming experience. Linx Vision is the first Windows tablet dedicated specifically to gamers. It offers all the benefits of mobile gaming while allowing full compatibility with all blockbuster games thanks to the inhome streaming function from XBOX One and PC with Steam. It then doubles as a truly portable gaming device by allowing games like Minecraft to be installed locally on the powerful Windows 10 platform and played anywhere without the need of a connection. Meanwhile the Linx Tough Tab can withstand everything that a business can throw at it. Powered by a 64-Bit Quad Core Intel Atom processor (up to 1.83GHz) and Windows 8.1 Pro with optional Windows 10 Pro upgrade, the IP67-rated tablet can withstand submersion in water, dusty environments and includes a builtin barcode scanner. Also, with the optional addition of radio frequency identification (RFID) into a business’s workflow, the Tough Tab seamlessly integrates into a business environment to improve productivity and stock control. Woodman concluded: “2016 will see Linx continuing on its success of 2015, when we launched the range with Windows 10. We have created Linx Vision, the tablet for gamers, and for the business sector, Tough Tab 8, which is an intelligent multi-purpose device. This is a full blown tablet as well as a barcode scanner and RFID device that is half the price of a plain barcode scanner. This is just one of many examples of how Linx is revolutionising tablet mobility for businesses everywhere, and we will continue to do so in 2016,” he concluded. With its all-encompassing range aimed at consumers and business users through to specific verticals in construction, gaming, education and more, Linx is able to satisfy the needs of all reseller customers. Adding to its high quality build and use of the latest technologies from Microsoft and Intel is the low price point of this range of devices. Exertis has hit the market requirements and through Linx, is once again showing its commitment to the channel and true technological innovation.
