WELCOME FROM EXERTIS

Welcome to the latest edition of Future Mobile. 2017 brings plenty of opportunity around mobile technologies. In this issue, we feature an article on the benefits of mobile working. Topical, as a very recent BT survey revealed that two thirds of office workers place mobile working as the most important aspect of an employee benefits package, even above a company car. However, BT maintain that cost cutting on mobile services is costing companies dearly in productivity, with almost half of respondents finding it hard to access documents and files when working remotely. Our article argues for a strategy that puts mobile first. Aligned to that topic, we also take a look at how wearables are impacting our lifestyle both from a consumer and enterprise perspective.
in hobbyists entering the drones market. Exertis has a great range, as highlighted in our “Game of Drones” article, and as smartphones and tablets can play an important role alongside drones, mobile dealers could add these to their portfolio and take advantage of the growth opportunity.
Keeping with the wearables theme, it was interesting to read a CSS Insight survey which reported that Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) will be the year’s fastest growing wearable category (172% growth), with smart watches in second (49% growth) and fitness trackers in third (30%). Exertis has been a key distributor for Oculus Rift amongst other devices. Carphone Warehouse, who commissioned the survey, predict that 10% of homes will have a VR device by Christmas, doubling the number of homes currently VR ready. No doubt Christmas will also see an increase
Finally, don’t forget to take a look at our regular features on what’s happening in the market and what’s making the news.
Of course, a New Year always brings new opportunities and we feature some great products in our aptly titled article “New Year, New Products, New Opportunities”. Along with our regular “Hot Picks” and our selection of the best attach products, there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re looking to help your customers save some money next year, there are a few tips in the “How to make the most of roaming” article.
Enjoy the read, thank you for your continued support and I wish a prosperous new year to all our customers and vendor partners.

Google is doing so by tightening Android security with better filelevel encryption and a more streamlined update process. Apple is making its play with new enterprise-focused features such as CallKit. The latest version of Android automatically downloads the latest updates in the background so users can continue working whenever rebooting their devices. This is good news for IT departments as devices that do not have the latest updates are much more susceptible to attacks.

CallKit in iOS10 is an application program interface that allows thirdparty apps to integrate with an iPhone’s phone interface. As a result, users get a consistent experience whether they use a voice over IP app or the phone’s built-in calling mechanism. They can also reject calls to unified communications apps from the home screen. Recent calls and missed calls appear in the same place as normal phone calls. iOS 10 also uses differential privacy that randomises data to conceal an individual user’s identity. The OS sends a user’s search data back to Apple, but the company has no way of identifying the particular user.

FUTURE
MOBILE
PUTTING MOBILE FIRST MANY ORGANISATIONS CAN FUNCTION PERFECTLY WELL WITH REMOTE WORKING Mobile has transformed the way we live and is increasingly changing how, where and when we work. Mobile technology, along with BYOD, increased connectivity, cloud and enhanced collaboration systems are all contributing to an unprecedented change to traditional work patterns and work practices. However, it presents a number of challenges as well as opportunities for companies. More workers outside of the office, a plethora of different devices on different operating systems to contend with and a cultural mind shift adds to the complexity. Many organisations can function perfectly well with remote working. The technology and communication channels exist to enable that and it is well documented that flexible working practices can add to efficiency and productivity from employees. Indeed, a survey from TeamViewer reported that 83.5% of UK office workers claimed they didn’t need to go to the office every day to be productive. However, 42% don’t have the ability to work flexibly despite preferring that option. From the same survey, nearly two fifths said their own IT department didn’t encourage nor make it easy to work remotely with the figure rising to 44% for companies with over 500 employees.
ADOPTING AN ENTERPRISE MOBILITY STRATEGY However, it will become increasingly difficult for companies to ignore the advantages of flexible working. Employees will demand it, helped in some cases by legislation. It will help attract the best talent irrespective of location and it will prove to be a huge motivating factor. Indeed, provided there are clear guidelines for employees on what is expected from mobile and flexible working, in many markets, it can be a key differentiator. Those companies that adopt a more enterprise mobility strategy are more likely to gain a competitive advantage. Of course, in order for mobile working to be successful, employees need the right tools. They need to be able to work in the same way, with the same access to company data and applications as if they were in the office. They need the right collaboration tools to enable teamwork and meetings to take place. They need a virtual help-desk with the provision for remote management and diagnostics if things go wrong or productivity will suffer. Likewise, employees are going to want to work with their own tablets or smartphones or even smartwatches and demand mobile access to all the data that’s in the enterprise systems in order to perform their tasks on the go. In addition, these employees expect the same level of user experience they are used to with consumer apps. That requires the business to focus on the user’s needs by designing apps that are suitable for all form factors and platforms.

It will become an even greater issue as IoT becomes more prevalent with experts predicting that as many as 25bn “things” will be in use by 2020. In many ways that’s great news for the channel. Companies will seldom have the in-house expertise to implement an enterprise mobility management solution and will be looking for resellers to provide advice and support. Ensuring a mobile workforce can access company files, documents and applications in real time whilst maintaining an accurate picture of who accessed what, on which device, will be a key requirement. Security is, of course, a key consideration. Naturally, device and data security are important issues for any IT department. Sensitive company data must always remain private. Balancing security with the user experience is a difficult task. Enterprise mobility provides little distinction between professional and personal life. The same device is being used to check e-mails, run business apps, post on social media or play a game. Human error is one of the main reasons for data breaches and malicious intrusions, therefore protecting company data and adding extra security to access apps, for example, is vital. In addition, employees also need to be aware of their obligations in terms of what they share, where they share it and how they store their information, as well as having a clear understanding of the company’s BYOD policy.

NEW YEAR, NEW PRODUCTS, NEW OPPORTUNITIES The dawning of a new year brings with it a sense of anticipation and excitement, and none more so than in the fast-paced world of mobile where there is always something to excite, to push boundaries and to enable new applications. To whet the appetite here are some of the products that have got us talking as we look forward to another successful year in all things mobile.
SONY XPERIA XZ AND XCOMPACT – PHONES THAT GET SMARTER EVERY DAY Whilst the Sony Xperia XZ perfects all the fundamentals of a great smartphone, it’s the camera that stands out with this flagship phone. With the advanced photography technology found in other Xperia models (a 23Mp sensor, f/2.0 aperture, 24mm lens, phase detection autofocus and an LED flash), it has added triple image sensing technology to analyse, adapt and capture perfect shots: an imaging sensor for movement, a laser autofocus for measuring distance and an RGBC-IR sensor for accurate colour reproduction. The XZ can shoot 4k video at 30fps. At the front, it boasts a 13Mp selfie camera with a 22mm wide-angle lens.
The Sony Xperia XZ features a 5.2” display with full HD resolution and its uncluttered and curvy design fits neatly into the hand. Powered by a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, it provides 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage with the possibility to extend to 256GB via the Micro SD slot. For added security, it features a fingerprint scanner, innovatively hidden within the power button and is rated IP68 for water and dust proof protection. It also features the new reversible USB-C port and an intelligent 2900mAh battery for fast charging and extended battery life. Packing all of the great features found in the Xperia X but with the excellent 23Mp camera found in the Xperia XZ and the triple image sensing technology, the Xperia X Compact combines convenience, comfort and beauty into a 4.6” smartphone that fits easily into the hand or your pocket. The smaller size still gives you decent picture quality with crisp visuals and attractive images at 1280 x 720 screen resolution. With 3GB RAM and 32GB of built-in storage, which can be boosted with a microSD memory card, it uses the same Snapdragon 650 processor as the full sized Xperia X. Like the Xperia XT, it also has the added benefit of side-mounted fingerprint security. It has a slightly smaller 2,700mAh battery but it also features smart charge technology that learns your charging habits and prevents overcharging. As for the selfie camera, the Xperia X Compact can still manage some sharp, attractive selfies with its 5Mp image stabilising front camera. Whether for business or pleasure the Sony Xperia XT and X Compact are a smart choice.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF ROAMING FOR CUSTOMERS
Data roaming has long been a thorny topic for travellers, featuring in many news stories where the unsuspecting and uninformed have been subject to the dreaded bill shock. For businesses the costs of data roaming are considerable, with some estimates putting the cost of international roaming of European business travellers at over £500m, and given that the average use is around 750Mb per trip then, with charges often up to £7.50 per Mb, it’s easy to see how the situation can get out of hand and costs rack up. It’s a subject that has recently been subject to scrutiny and regulation. However, the EU are placing caps on charging, and as of next June dispensing with roaming charges altogether. One thing the FD will be aware of is that whilst charges may be reducing in many areas, the use of mobile devices used internationally for business is increasing rapidly so for many businesses bills are likely to remain high.

To avoid what are often unnecessary charges there are a few things that customers can do to reduce considerably the impact roaming has on the bottom line. Use WiFi – sounds obvious, however, depending on the provider and the destination there are a few things to consider. Free WiFi is great and convenient, but often is poor in terms of performance, something that is far from ideal when on that important Skype call and is certainly very poor in terms of security. Many hotels now provide guests with secure, fairly good performance WiFi, and WiFi aggregators like iPass, provide secure WiFi connectivity to millions of hotspots worldwide, avoiding hefty premium access services at airports, venues, on planes and in hotels.

CAN WEARABLES HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON LIFESTYLE? ANALYSTS PREDICT CONTINUED GROWTH IN WEARABLES MARKET In our “Putting Mobile First” article in this issue of Future Mobile, we touched on how the mobile market has changed the way we work, creating the opportunity for a better work life balance. But are wearables having a positive effect on our lifestyle both at home and work? Wearables today range from smartwatches and smartbands to virtual reality headsets, which are all gaining traction among consumers. The market, valued at $7.1bn in 2015, will hit $12.6bn in 2018, according to research firm Statista. IDC reported that more than 70m wearable devices were shipped worldwide last year alone, and this statistic will grow to 237m by 2020. Certainly there is evidence of increased adoption from young consumers surrounding applications in health and fitness. According to a new report from ABI Research, wearables adoption is set to triple over the next five years in various industries with enterprise adoption expected to grow to 35m units shipped in that period. Having a clear purpose and user case is going to be imperative for both the consumer and business.
CONSUMER WEARABLES AND LIFESTYLE Smartwatches and other wearables already appeal to the healthcare industry because they can track a wide range of health metrics, including steps, heart rate, sweat, movement, sleep patterns and more. These kinds of devices would be useful for physicians, physical therapists and trainers. Research from the Journal of the American Heart Association, maintained that the use of the internet, mobile phones and personal sensors inspired behavioural changes such as improving diet, increasing physical activity, losing weight and even helped to reduce tobacco and alcohol use. They also concluded that these changes were even more effective if linked to healthcare providers. Insurance companies have been active in linking a healthy lifestyle to lower premiums evidenced by monitoring devices. The UK government has suggested that, in the near future, data from health apps and wearable trackers could feed into people’s personal health records. Yet in contrast, it has been reported that whilst many people want to live a healthier lifestyle, users become bored with the wearable device after six months, forgetting to charge it or use it. Some research from universities in the US and Canada also
showed that fitness trackers made no material difference to weight loss and some have questioned their accuracy altogether. It is also apparent that smartwatches are not for everyone. According to IDC differentiating the experience of a smartwatch from a smartphone will be key in the future.
WEARABLES IN THE WORKPLACE The advantage of wearables is their size, weight and convenience which enable users to perform tasks hands-free and the opportunities for business are many and varied. Having a hands-free device has been said to increase productivity by 8.5% and satisfaction by 3.5% within a business, as employees can receive and review data on-the-go, as well as sending the data they receive back to the company. Wearables such as smartwatches, glasses and clothing, are beginning to transform the way business’ communicate, as well as helping to boost productivity, streamline businesses processes and maximise efficiencies. For instance, construction or oil rig workers can benefit from a hands-free existence together with access to instructions, measurements or blueprints from a VR headset. Similarly, devices are valuable in tourism where travel companies can feed tourists information on sites to see and meeting times. A well-known example is Walt Disney World’s MagicBands, which let guests enter theme parks, pay for food and souvenirs, and unlock their hotel room doors. Before wearables become mainstream in the workplace, companies will need to invest in apps specifically for their business. Anything from stock control to transaction processes are being developed. Of course, bringing more devices into the workplace requires security and privacy to be considered. However, most companies already have procedures for smartphones, so adding wearables should not be an inhibitor to progress. To find out about the latest wearables from smartwatches to VR, please speak to your Exertis account manager today. GAME OF DRONES CONSUMER AND HOBBYIST DEMAND SET TO GROW Leaving aside the considerable industrial market for drones in verticals like transport, agriculture, energy, construction, military and film, the consumer and hobbyist market remains an attractive proposition. Research by Grand View Research valued the consumer market at $355.9m in 2015 and forecasted it to reach $4.19bn by 2024. According to analysts ABI, the toy/hobbyist market will surpass prosumer drone revenue in 2017 and will account for about two thirds of the market in 2025. The substantial growth can be attributed to the increasing popularity of drone flying by hobbyists either for UAV photography, racing or just simply for entertainment. The introduction of high resolution HD 4K cameras and more advanced gimbal systems has certainly boosted the interest in aerial video photography and racing clubs with leagues have sprung up over the UK. Indeed the FT recently dubbed it “the sport of the future”. As the market grows, pricing will become more competitive and new technologies will make flying drones easier with geo-fencing and collision avoidance opening up the market for beginners and not just for experienced or qualified drone pilots. The market is dominated by multi-rotor drones accounting for over 85% of the market in 2015 and this is set to continue. However, nano drones are expected to gain momentum due to their low cost of production, maintenance and portability. In addition, there are fixed wing drones on the market which have diverse applications from racing to surveillance and mapping.
OPPORTUNITY TO ATTACH The interest in consumer drones is good news for retailers, particularly when you consider the opportunity for add-on sales. Aerial photography consumes on-board memory so SD cards and portable external drives provide opportunities for bundles. Extra batteries are always a good choice with flight times averaging around 30 minutes and transportation is always a consideration, so a travel case is pretty essential.
DRONES FOR ALL Exertis can provide you with the add-ons plus the widest range of drones on the market for consumers. These include: • •
• •
Kaiser BaaS Gamma and Theta models which match spectacular aerial capabilities with HD video recording. The VR-X headset provides an immersive flying experience. A range of drones and mini-drones from Parrot: the Mambo and Swing are highly affordable mini-drones that provide great entertainment at an entry level. The Disco with its innovative single wing design and the Bebop2 is a high spec, low cost camera drone. The Propel Star Wars collector’s edition of high performance, laser battling quadcopters including the Star Wars Tie Fighter, X Wing Star Fighter, Speeder Bike and Millennium Falcon Yuneec, well known in the professional drone market with its Typhoon range that offers innovative, fully featured products that provide aerial and videography solutions with 4K camera capability and Breeze marketed as a no flight experience, flying camera, which can capture photos and video in 4K resolution, and share directly to social media.
Indeed whether you are selling to a beginner or an experienced pilot, Exertis has the most exciting line-up in the industry to choose from with retail prices ranging from £29.99 up to £1,799.99. As smartphones and tablets can play an important role alongside drones, mobile dealers could add these to their portfolio and take advantage of a growth opportunity, utilising Exertis’ drop ship capabilities to service their customers. If you’re interested in playing in the drones market, call your Exertis account manager for further details.
