When Happiness is Not Enough Balancing pleasure and achievement in your life Chris Skellett

Everybody wants to be happy. We all know when we’re happy and when we’re sad, but what is ‘happiness’ really and does it result in a fulfilling life? In considering these questions, psychologist Chris Skellet came to the conclusion that ‘In order to live a truly fulfilling life, we need to strike a considered balance between Pleasure and Achievement.’ This simple truth, known as the Pleasure/Achievement Principle, lies at the heart of this entertaining, yet thought-provoking book. By applying the Principle to your own life, you will learn: how to enhance your relationships with those around you; how to use to your advantage the underlying influences that drive your decision-making style; how to experience a greater sense of both achievement and enjoyment at work; and how to strike the right balance for you between indulging in the pleasures of the moment and striving towards the achievement of personal goals. Most importantly, you will discover how to create a personal plan that will enable you to enjoy a rich and fulfilling life — a life well lived.

The Reality Slap

How to find fulfilment when life hurts Dr Russ Harris The new book from the bestselling author of The Happiness Trap! The ‘reality slap’ takes many different forms. Sometimes it is so violent it’s more like a punch: the death of a loved one, a serious illness, a major injury, a freak accident, a shocking crime, a disabled child, the loss of a job; bankruptcy, betrayal, fire, flood, divorce or disaster. Sometimes it’s a little gentler: envy, loneliness, resentment, failure, disappointment or rejection. But whatever form it takes, one thing’s for sure: it hurts! And most of us don’t deal with the pain very well. This book is based on a scientifically proven mindfulness-based approach called ‘Acceptance and Commitment Therapy’ (ACT). You will learn how to cope effectively when life hurts: not just how to survive, but how to thrive. Using the proven principles of ACT, you’ll discover how to: • find peace in the midst of your pain • find calm in the midst of your chaos • anchor yourself in the midst of emotional storms • increase your sense of connection with yourself and others • use your painful emotions to cultivate wisdom and compassion • find fulfilment even when you can’t get what you want • heal your wounds, and come through stronger than before.

About the Author

‘Deeply moving and easy to understand, The Reality Slap is a book that takes us to the heart of being human, to really help us change from the inside. As one of the world’s pioneers of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Russ Harris has given us a truly compassionate gift on how to (en)lighten our journey through life’s storms and calms. I had so many insightful moments that reading this book was a delight, an uplifting shoulder, and an education.’ Professor Paul Gilbert, PhD, author of The Compassionate Mind

Growing Yourself Up How to bring your best to all of life’s relationships Jenny Brown

To be human is to be in relationships. We can’t survive without them but at the same time it’s in our relationships that we so easily come unravelled. The message of Growing Yourself Up is that you can’t separate understanding the individual from understanding relationships. All of life’s relationships are integral to increasing self-awareness and growing maturity — and it’s not necessarily the comfortable ones that promote personal growth. Drawing from Bowen family systems theory, this book takes you on a journey through each stage of life to see the predictable patterns of relationships and to show how to use this knowledge to make purposeful adjustments in yourself. The result is a sturdier self, sturdier relationships and a refreshing new way of viewing life’s challenges and opportunities.

Best Start

Understanding your baby’s emotional needs to create the best beginnings Lynn Jenkins A baby’s early experiences and interactions provide them with the beginnings of their self-beliefs, thoughts and feelings; their self-esteem and selfvalue; how they operate in relationships; and their sense of emotional security. It is therefore vital that parents understand how to help their baby to develop trust and confidence, and to feel secure and valued. In Best Start, psychologist Lynn Jenkins looks at how a person’s emotional foundations are formed in babyhood and the power that these foundations have over the way in which the child develops. Most importantly, she outlines what a baby needs in order to develop a positive idea of themselves and explains to parents what they can do to meet those needs, ensuring that their child experiences the best start in life.

The Case for Creativity

Two decades’ evidence of the link between imaginative marketing and commercial success James Hurman Debate in the advertising and marketing industries has raged for decades: do high levels of creativity make advertising more effective? Or is creativity just the folly of creative people looking to win their next award? The arguments of both advocates and cynics have until now been based on conjecture and anecdotal evidence. The Case for Creativity brings the debate to a conclusion, telling the story of two decades of international research into the link between creativity and business results. The book also includes insightful comment and perspective from some of advertising and marketing’s leading minds.

Being Gay, Being Christian

You can be both Dr Stuart Edser Foreword by Judge Michael Kirby

The primary aim of this book is to explain to gay or same-sex attracted people that they can be both gay and Christian — that the two are not mutually exclusive. The calm authoritative voice of science and scholarship, explains that gay people are neither sick nor sinful. Author Stuart Edser threads his own extraordinary story throughout the text, using this and his experience as a clinician to guide his thinking. At the end, he presents an alternative model of Christian discourse to that which we usually hear and offers a positive voice so often glaringly absent from the Church’s utterances on homosexuality. He argues passionately for church people everywhere to open their minds and show a willingness to discard older ways of thinking where more modern explanations elucidate the truth more closely.

Dr Stuart Edser is the principal psychologist at Newcastle Psychology & Health, based in Lambton, Newcastle. He has several degrees in psychology and education, including a PhD. He was a minor seminarian in the Catholic Church living in a monastery for three years as an early teen, but was also an elder, leader, preacher and teacher in the Protestant evangelical and charismatic wing of the Church. In this wing, he was a co-founder of a church in his twenties, a church that still exist in the Newcastle suburb of Highfields. After years of struggle and finally self-acceptance, he now lives happily with his partner Chris.

Evolution of the Australian Dream Philip Cox, Philip Graus & Bob Myer While we cannot know how much Australia will continue to grow, we can assume that it will and, as a community, we need to consider what sort of cities and suburbs we want to live in. This fascinating book will hopefully trigger debate among the broader community about the future of our cities and housing. It looks at the dwelling as the basic element of our cities, from the house to the apartment building, before going on to trace the development of suburbia from Australian urban and dwelling prototypes to the contemporary city and the choices we have before us.

Deadly Beautiful

Vanishing killers of the animal kingdom Liana Joy Christensen Illustrations by Ian Faulkner Ever-increasing concern for the fate of the environment and the world’s endangered wildlife means that this book is a particularly timely addition to the world of natural history publishing. Dr Liana Joy Christensen, one of Australia’s foremost nature writers, takes a fresh and entertaining look at the ‘deadly’ animals with which humans have for so long enjoyed a love–hate relationship. These animals are generally not the aggressors nor the lethal killing machines that mythology and tradition would have us believe. Most also serve vital roles in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats, while their fascinating behaviour and often striking beauty make them worthy of close study, particularly as so many of them are facing the worst death of all — extinction. Beautifully illustrated, Deadly Beautiful is certain to foster a new understanding and appreciation of these incredible animals and their importance on a global scale.

About the Author

Did you know that the humble marmot is responsible for more than one billion human deaths? Or that for every person bitten by a shark each year, 25 people are bitten by New Yorkers? These facts and many more appear in this fascinating tribute to our world’s ‘deadly’ wildlife.

T h e N atura l W or l d

Dr Liana Joy Christensen has enjoyed a lifelong passion for wildlife and nature. For five years she was editor of the wildlife and natural resources magazine Landscope. She has worked extensively with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), earning from them a citation for excellence in science journalism. Her nature essays have regularly appeared in anthologies and magazines such as Australasian GEO, and been excerpted in translation for both German and Korean GEOs. Her work is published in literary and scientific journals around the world. Currently, Liana dwells in Fremantle, Western Australia, where she writes full time as well as teaching at several local universities. She co-exists peacefully with a husband, two cats, and a garden full of red-back spiders.

These days farming is a highly mechanised industry, and farmers have to be trained in a range of skills from animal husbandry to accountancy in order to survive. However, animals are much the same as they have always been, the weather is as unpredictable as ever, and country folk continue to be adaptable and spontaneous in facing challenging situations each day. In the process, they have frequently found themselves in some pretty hair-raising and sometimes downright hilarious predicaments. Bull’s Wool is a highly enjoyable collection of country yarns, with subjects including oddball farming characters, shearers and shearing, ‘swaggers’ and remittance men, encounters with tractors and farm machinery, uppity animals and rural novices. This is a book that men and women of all ages will enjoy, whether in gumboots or fireside slippers.

Fishing Sense Philip Weigall

Flyfishing, and fishing in general, is one of the world’s most popular outdoor activities. However, it’s an unfortunate fact that there is no prescriptive manual for ensuring success. Flyfishing is an activity that defies simple evaluation, with enough variables to leave even the ‘experts’ scratching their heads from time to time. For example, why is it that a trout will respond to a certain fly one day, but ignore it entirely in identical conditions on another? Respected flyfishing author Philip Weigall attempts to answer this question and many more in this engaging book. In his words, it is a book of ‘flyfishing truths’, a collection of techniques, ideas, concepts, knowledge and equipment that, to the best of his objective observations over many decades spent with a rod in hand, honestly seem to matter when it comes to catching trout.

About the Author

Philip Weigall is a flyfishing guide and instructor at Millbrook Lakes, and otherwise fishes and travels as often as he can. Philip has been writing regularly on all things flyfishing for twenty years and is presently a columnist and feature writer for Freshwater Fishing magazine, and editor of Flyfisher magazine. His previous book with Exisle Publishing was the acclaimed Fishing Season.

For the Love of the Game Grassroots rugby in heartland New Zealand Gregor Paul & Gregory Crow

A celebration of New Zealand grassroots rugby and the people who make it happen. In original words and striking photographs, it tells the story of a great love affair that is pursued in every corner of New Zealand. As one generation succeeds another, children are hooked by the game at school and club level, and families get caught up in helping their kids succeed and in maintaining the reputation of their team or club. In the process, the rugby club often becomes the social hub of the community. Many of the people responsible for carrying on the traditions of New Zealand rugby are unsung heroes who give up their Saturdays to coach teams, make the teas, polish the boots, referee the games and ferry the kids around the country. 1918 Year of Victory The end of the Great War and the shaping of history Edited by Ashley Ekins

1918 Year of Victory is an original and very readable account of one of the most significant and often misunderstood events of the last century. The Australian War Memorial’s Ashley Ekins presents a compelling account of the world’s first ‘great war’ and its legacy. Was it a futile 1561 days of incredible carnage paving the way for yet more misery, death and destruction with World War II? Or did the end of the war create the modern world, shaping our era’s attitudes, social relations, art and culture? The chapters in this book had their origins in an international conference convened by the AWM in Canberra in November 2008 to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the end of the Great War. Lively, authoritative and wide-ranging presentations were made by the world’s leading scholars, revealing new thinking and challenging many of the assumptions and common perceptions surrounding the conflict. At once an informed overview for general-interest readers and a superb resource for serious buffs, this extraordinary volume is sure to become one of the fundamental books in any war buff ’s library.

When Herbert Hart left his hometown of Carterton in 1914 to serve as a major with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, he could not have imagined that he would return as a highly decorated brigadier-general. He served in Gallipoli and on the Western Front and throughout the entire period kept a diary, in which he recorded his experiences in the great battles of Gallipoli, the Somme and Passchendaele. Exceptionally well written, Hart’s diary is now widely regarded as one of the most important personal sources relating to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

In Her Own Words

The writings of Elizabeth Macquarie Robin Walsh Elizabeth Henrietta Macquarie (1778–1835) was the second wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, who served the colony of New South Wales between 1810 and 1821. Their indomitable partnership survived personal loss and public scrutiny to shape the face of Australia. Elizabeth embraced her life in this strange and largely unexplored country. She left a special imprint on the people and places of New South Wales through her advocacy of the arts, architecture, gardening and education. However, it was her family life that would consume much of her energies: her roles as wife, mother, nurturer and widow deeply influenced her outlook and inspired her wider social initiatives. In Her Own Words explores — with explanations, annotations and transcriptions of Elizabeth’s surviving letters and her illuminating journal of her voyage to Sydney — how this remarkable woman forged a life that spanned the globe and transformed a colony.

About the Author

Robin Walsh is a graduate of UNSW with a BA (Hons) in early Australian history, and holds a graduate diploma in Library Science. He began his career in librarianship in 1976 at the Mitchell Library, Sydney, and has been working as a reference and research librarian at Macquarie University Library since 1980. As senior research librarian at Macquarie University, Robin is also curator of the Lachlan Macquarie Room — the original parlour room from Macquarie’s home on the Isle of Mull, Scotland — located inside the university’s library.

‘ … At that moment his eyes, were turned up to heaven. He continued to breathe gently, for some time, and at length, it ceased, without a groan, or struggle of any kind. I was on my knees, beside him, and had hold of his shoulder. Every one was perfectly tranquil. He was certainly undisturbed, at the last … The moment of his departure was to me the most sublime of my Life. I felt as though my soul was ascending with his to heaven …’ Elizabeth Macquarie, 1835, on the death and burial of Lachlan Macquarie

‘Look for New Zealand on the map. There is the North Island like some long-necked creature leaping up and away, trying to escape from the South Island and Stewart Island, anxious to have a few adventures on its own. But the South Island, sternly oblong, holds it back and Stewart Island finally anchors it down. “You’re not having any adventures without me,” it mutters. “Don’t think you can leave me behind just because I’m smaller than you two!” For New Zealand is certainly an adventurous country … we have forests and rocky beaches. We have earthquakes and volcanoes, and pools of boiling mud and these days we also have the All Blacks — a world famous rugby football team. Earthquakes, boiling mud and rugby players! Who could wish for more?’

The inspiring true story of a courageous woman’s struggle with her traditional Muslim upbringing. Farida Sultana’s remarkable life began in Bangladesh when, as a young girl, she found herself in conflict with the Islamic culture that prevents girls and women from learning music and arts. Later, her arranged marriage to a doctor at the age of eighteen took her to war-torn Iran, then to the United Kingdom, and finally to New Zealand. Her personal journey included episodes of domestic violence as she sought to find herself and her true role in the world. Having established the first ethnic women’s refuge in New Zealand, Farida is now a passionate advocate for migrant and refugee communities globally.

Even the most tyrannical of despots or the most scholarly of geniuses probably had a ‘Mister Cuddles’ or ‘Big Ted’ at some point in their childhood. As the book’s title suggests, this is a collection of bears that could have belonged to the rich and famous. Whether they’re politicians, inventors, entertainers or entrepreneurs, the fictional bears attempt to reflect the personalities of their owners. Borat’s bear wears a mankini; David Beckham’s bear sports Armani underpants and, of course, Van Gogh’s teddy has just one ear.

Preposterous Proverbs

Why fine words butter no parsnips Max Cryer In Preposterous Proverbs, Max Cryer looks at a vast array of proverbs from around the world. Proverbs on birth, food, women and love rub shoulders with others on money, animals, sin and death. He has chosen some of the most interesting and perplexing, and with his characteristic wry wit he analyses their meaning and truth. A great book to dip into, Preposterous Proverbs will take you from Greece (‘A thousand men cannot undress a naked man’) and China (‘A dry finger cannot pick up salt’) to Japan (‘Fools and scissors must be carefully handled’) and India (‘A fat spouse is a quilt for winter’).

About the Author

Max Cryer is a language expert with many years’ experience of researching and writing on the subject. A well-known broadcaster and entertainer, he hosts a weekly radio slot on quirks of the English language. In a long career, he has been a schoolteacher, a compere and television host, as well as a performer on the opera stage in London and in cabaret in Las Vegas and Hollywood. Now a full-time writer living in Auckland, he has written many books, including Who Said That First?, Love Me Tender and The Godzone Dictionary.

William Dobell

An artist’s life Elizabeth Donaldson This high-quality, exquisitely produced book is a celebration of the life and art of William Dobell, considered to be one of Australia’s greatest artists. Dobell was the first artist to win both the Wynne Prize for landscape and the Archibald Prize for portraiture in the same year. However, William Dobell was also a quintessential Australian — more at home in the local pub with his friends than on the international art stage. Lavishly illustrated with artworks, personal photographs and newspaper clippings, William Dobell: An Artist’s Life paints a compelling portrait of both the man and artist.

About the Author

After moving to Wangi Wangi, New South Wales, Elizabeth Donaldson and her husband Robert found themselves living just seven houses down from Dobell House, William Dobell’s former residence and today a lasting memorial to his life and art. This sparked her fascination with the artist and Liz became an active volunteer there in 2000. She has held numerous positions, including Vice President, Publicity Officer and Funding and Grants Co-ordinator. Her involvement there also saw her embark on a research project that has culminated in this book.

Iran is one of the most misunderstood countries in the world. Few people in the West know anything about the Iranian people beyond their current politics and religion. In Two Wings of a Nightingale, award-winning travel writer Jill Worrall uses the threads of Iran’s silk-road heritage as the basis for her road-trip travelogue and, in so doing, describes an Iran the world has forgotten.

Railway Season

David St John Thomas Celebrate the days when trains were trains, individual expresses had their own character, serving their passengers in style in the restaurant car, and connecting services ran over picturesque branch lines that were a very part of the countryside they served. Railway Season captures all our railway yesterdays with panache. This is indeed a railway book like no other, a portfolio of word portraits by an enthusiast who knows his subject intimately. Whatever your interest in railways, there is much here for you.

Hairy Nose, Itchy Butt

Elizabeth Frankel & Garry Duncan Ever had an itch you couldn’t scratch? Hairy-Nosed Wombat has one, and somebody has chopped down his favourite scratching tree! Join our marsupial hero on an itchity, scratchity adventure as he tries to find the perfect place to scratch his butt. Hugely entertaining with a comical rhyme that children will love, Hairy Nose, Itchy Butt features a very cute — and very endangered — Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat. The story, written by South Australian author Elizabeth Frankel and beautifully illustrated by Australian artist Garry Duncan, also has a serious underlying environmental message about the impact construction and deforestation has had on the Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat.
