Red wine is good for us. Alcohol is bad for us. Cut out sugar. Eat less fat. Eat more fat. Every day we’re bombarded by often-contradictory advice on what to do to keep ourselves healthy. How can we separate fact from fad? Written by a medical clinician, this is the ultimate myth-busting guide to what will really help us live a long and healthy life. Professor Thomas looks at each item on the ‘longevity list’ in turn, analysing why it’s come to be considered a health priority, and giving his scientifically backed verdict on how much attention we really need to pay to it. You’ll learn everything from why taking statins to lower LDL cholesterol might not be a good idea for everyone with higher than desirable levels, to whether there’s a connection between donating blood regularly and living a longer life. Along the way you’ll discover stacks of intriguing, entertaining and often very funny facts. Why do people get drunk more quickly on champagne? Is caffeine really a performance-enhancing drug? Can chocolate improve your sex life? This is the one-stop checklist to living a life that might just see you reach your 100th birthday and beyond!

Illuminating Wisdom

Words of Wisdom, Works of Art

Deirdre Hassed & Craig Hassed Illuminating Wisdom brings art and wisdom together in a beautiful celebration of some of the world’s most inspiring philosophical, spiritual and literary quotes. Approximately 80 quotes have been drawn from some of the great wisdom and literary traditions of both East and West, as well as from inspiring people throughout history noted for their practical insight. These quotes have been set to exquisite calligraphy by Deirdre Hassed, a leading professional calligrapher, in a range of styles — from the traditional to the contemporary, and making use of many and varied

techniques such as gilding, collage, work on glass, letterpress and linoprinting. Accompanying each artwork is text by Dr Craig Hassed, an international expert in mindfulness, that provides background on the quote’s author, explores the wisdom tradition to which it belongs, and offers deep insight into the meaning of the quote. The result is a book that is both a work of art and a collection of wisdom that will educate and inspire.

From the artist’s desk Since childhood, I have had a fascination with handwriting. I loved delving into my grandfather’s old sign-writing box, a treasure trove of old brushes, gold leaf and finely crafted steel pens. This book is a marriage of two of my life’s great passions, the richly historical and contemporary craft of calligraphy with a deep interest in philosophy. The wisdom traditions offer a rich reservoir of texts to inspire my calligraphic artworks. deirdre hassed

Now, Feed Your Brain: The Cookbook shows you how to make the most of this knowledge in your own kitchen. Sunshine Slaw with Lemon Macadamia Mayonnaise

RIGHTS SOLD ITALY, CZECH REPUBLIC

½ medium white cabbage, sliced finely 1 medium yellow beetroot, grated or julienned with a mandolin 1 medium yellow carrot, grated or julienned with a mandolin 1 medium orange carrot, grated or julienned with a mandolin 1 small red onion, sliced thinly

A bright, crunchy and tangy coleslaw is always a treat, and when it’s full of bright orange and yellow colours it’s even more appealing. If you can’t find any yellow beetroot or carrots, just replace them with ordinary orange ones — it will still taste lovely. If you have some macadamias left over after preparing the dressing, sprinkle them over the salad before serving. You don’t have to use all the creamy mayonnaise, as it’s delicious on other salads or as a dip, too. Adding fresh coriander helps the salad become even more brain friendly, as coriander is thought to be a very effective mercury detoxifier, a heavy metal that is particularly damaging to brain tissue.

Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl. Pour over the dressing to taste, tossing until well combined.

½ cup fresh coriander (cilantro), finely chopped

Lemon Macadamia Mayonnaise ½ preserved lemon, seeds removed ½ cup olive oil ½ cup fresh, raw macadamia nuts ½ cup cold water 1 large garlic clove salt, to taste

Add all the ingredients, except for the salt (as preserved lemons are already quite salty) to a powerful blender. Blend well and then taste to see if the dressing needs any additional salt. You may need to add a little extra water if the macadamias are not very ‘oily’ and the mixture doesn’t become creamy enough. The oil content of the macadamias depends on their quality and the season. The mixture should be creamy and slightly thick, but still pourable. Variation Add 1 teaspoon of antioxidant-rich turmeric, which has many great benefits for the brain, to the basic mayonnaise recipe. It turns the mayo a gorgeous golden colour, as well as adding extra nutrients to this crunchy coleslaw.

Build the Person You Want to Be The Oranges Toolkit

Simon RountreeE

Throughout our lives we face many challenges, both personal and professional. Often, we struggle to know how best to cope and wish we had greater personal resources to draw upon. This book can help! Based on the science and principles of positive psychology, Build the Person You Want to Be provides you with the tools you need to foster greater resilience and mental wellbeing. The ORANGES toolkit focuses on the seven key elements that support human flourishing and meaning: Optimism, Resilience, Attitude, Now (mindfulness), Gratitude, Energy and Strengths. Through an exploration of the current research, it shows that if you can increase your positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishments, you enhance the capacity to handle life’s challenges and reduce the impact of the things that hold you back, such as fears, anxieties and doubts. The book outlines ways to practise and build skills to re-orientate your thinking from ‘What is wrong?’ to ‘What is right?’ and, despite life’s adversities, to bounce back and thrive.

About the author Originally a preschool teacher, Simon Rountree has worked across the private, government and not-for-profit sectors in a career that has covered more than 35 years. His work around the mindset required to create stronger mental wellbeing, resilience and meaning within individuals and workforces and the simple ways of creating this has been featured in global conferences, publications and the media. By using the philosophies, tools and techniques outlined in the book, Simon took a small children’s cancer charity, Camp Quality, from the threat of having its licence to operate removed by the government to being voted Australia’s most trusted children’s charity for four years in a row (2012–16) and along the way grew its services and support for children impacted by cancer.

Happiness is a

Red Teapot

About the author Anouska Jones is a book editor, publisher, reviewer and author, who has worked in publishing for over twenty years. She is a huge believer in the power of a cup of tea to fix pretty much anything!

Happiness is a Red Teapot Anouska Jones (Ed.)

For centuries, tea has held a valued place in both Eastern and Western cultures. From the ritual of a Japanese tea ceremony to the cosy informality of an English cuppa at the kitchen table, tea (whether green, black, white or herb) soothes, grounds and comforts us. It’s no surprise that so many of us switch the kettle on at the first sign of trouble — keep calm and drink tea! In fact, that’s how this book came about. After a particularly stressful week, editor Anouska Jones was sitting at home with her husband complaining about everything that had gone wrong. As he put their teapot on the table, her husband commented, ‘Cheer up! You can’t be miserable when you’ve got a bright red teapot in front of you!’ The very next morning, Anouska started researching quotes about tea and before long she had a collection of memorable quotations from rock stars (Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart), politicians (Abraham Lincoln, William Gladstone), actors (Audrey Hepburn, Billy Connolly), adventurers (Bear Grylls) and more. It seems tea’s appeal is truly universal!

You can’t get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. C.S. LEWIS

PUG

How to be the Best You

Helen James

Pugs have been around for centuries but there is something new about a pug selfhelp book. Pugs have been the favorite pets of Chinese Emperors and even lived with Tibetan Monks. So, it’s not surprising that they’ve gathered a wealth of wisdom. With a unique illustration on one side, and succinct advice on the other side, this book has become a gorgeous gift, a fun item to have on the coffee table to dip into time and time again. It will be loved by those who care about thoughts and value the unique. It will be adored by millions of pug lovers who always suspected there was something extra to their loved pet.

Meeting Helen WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE PUG? After some life changing personal experiences and drawing on my training as a psychologist, I wanted to write a self-improvement book that would attract people who don’t normally read selfimprovement books. My goal, quite simply is to bring out the best in people — hence the subtitle “HOW TO BE THE BEST YOU”. I’ve always been intrigued by Pugs and when I researched them I discovered they have an incredibly rich history. I started to think that PUG might actually stand for Philosophical Universal Guidance! So PUG is the perfect partner for my message as he takes us on an inspirational journey of thought-provoking and powerful messages enhanced by charming and often humorous illustrations.

WHEN YOU PICTURE A PUG FAN, WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE? Most people love Pugs and so I think PUG will have a broad fan base. I know, having shown PUG to friends, colleagues, family and even strangers, that they all fall in love with him and his messages. I love the fact that, at the end of enjoying the book, everyone is left with a smile on their faces and some even shed a tear in a moment of selfrevelation. It’s like this is PUG’s gift to them. WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE WILL TAKE AWAY FROM MEETING PUG? I hope that once people meet PUG they will never forget him or his wisdom. And I hope this book inspires readers around the world to make a conscious effort to reveal their best self in each moment. I also hope they will look out for more words of wisdom from PUG. The Adriatic Kitchen

Recipes inspired by the abundance of seasonal ingredients flourishing on the Croatian island of Korčula

Barbara Unković

Pan-Fried Eggplant (Aubgergine)

Eggplant (aubergine) is well suited to the Adriatic climate. Although the plants are often slow to establish themselves, once they begin to flower, we know we will always be assured of an endless crop until the end of September.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons wholemeal (whole-wheat) flour ½ teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground turmeric sea salt and black pepper 1 large eggplant (aubergine), cut into 1 centimetre (½ inch) thick slices

2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra

Place flour, spices, salt and pepper into a large brown paper bag and shake to mix well. Add the eggplant slices, three at a time, and shake the bag to coat thoroughly.

Shallow fry the eggplant slices in olive oil over medium heat for about 6 minutes on each side, shaking occasionally to ensure even frying. Continue turning until the eggplant slices are soft and golden in colour. Remove and drain on kitchen paper.

Repeat with the remaining slices, adding a small quantity of extra oil if necessary. Do not saturate the slices while frying.

Serve warm, drizzled with extra olive oil.

Barbara Unković has always been drawn to the land of her father, the sun-soaked Croatian island of Korčula in the Adriatic Sea. She spent several years living there, in the seaside village of Račišće, immersed in its way of life, its culture, history and food. Now, inspired by the island’s culinary traditions and its abundance of fresh, seasonal ingredients, Barbara has produced The Adriatic Kitchen, a delightful, rustic cookbook full of gorgeous recipes and evocative memories. Over 70 simple yet delicious recipes are included, such as Croatian Sweet Easter Bread; Black Risotto; Fresh Fig Crumble; Roast Chicken Fresh Fig Crumble with Pomegranate and Spinach; Dalmatian Shepherd’s Lamb with Potatoes and Broad Beans; Sugared Almonds; Croatian Pepper Biscuits; Carrot and Mint Salad.
