With nearly 150 highly recognized concrete projects around the world, we are proud to serve as the nation’s longest running and most experienced skatepark specific design-build team.
Our staff is comprised of registered landscape architects, engineers, graphic designers and construction professionals who are passionate active skateboarders. NLS VDZ provides comprehensive consultation services to facilitate public input in the design of skateparks and other progressive youth facilities. As avid park users ourselves, we know how important participation by youth and other members of the community will be to the long term success of each project. No matter what project size, we deliver a tailored program of hands-on, interactive design workshops and public presentations led exclusively by principal members of our team. Outside of our scheduled meetings, youth and other stakeholders are encouraged to continue to submit written comments, sketches, pictures etc. through our specially developed custom web portal for immediate and ongoing feedback. New Line Skateparks Inc. and van der Zalm + associates inc. has worked extensively in the design and development of skateparks, youth parks, and other ‘casual recreation’ facilities. This emerging area of recreation is not new, although the numbers that are attracted to inline, bmx, and skateboarding have been steadily growing. This respect must be balanced with an understanding of construction tolerances, safety standards, community needs, security, and budget. youth park design philosophy... Many past youth/skatepark designs have yielded disappointing results largely due to unqualified or inexperienced service providers. Some key issues that continually surface to the forefront of discussion are:

1. Parks should be designed by those who understand the sports and their technical demands. 2. Designers must be able to communicate with the user groups and not be afraid to take artistic and technical direction from youth. 3. Designers must understand the limits of construction yet willingly seek new methods and technologies. Health, safety, and welfare of users must be paramount when designing new facilities.

nls - president / director of skatepark development
Mr. Dion is the founder and president of New Line Skateparks Inc. and will be responsible for directing all action as it relates to project development. Mr. Dion is a seasoned active skateboarder who has tirelessly dedicated himself to the promotion of the sport across Canada and throughout the world. He is a current executive board member of the Canadian Skateboarding Association (CASA) and has provided his professional consulting and construction services for over 150 projects across Canada, the United States, Europe, South America and Australia. In addition to receiving numerous recognitions for his work (including the esteemed Canadian Society of Landscape Architects National Honour Award), Mr. Dion is regularly featured in prominent Canadian and international media publications for his unique community recreation contributions.
Mark W. van der Zalm csla,asla vdz - principal / landscape architect
Mr. van der Zalm is the founding principal of van der Zalm + associates inc. and serves as the lead landscape architect for our team. His duties will include liaising with the client, stakeholders and the public as well as certified design development and project management. Mr. van der Zalm is a registered member of both the Canadian and American Society of Landscape Architects and has been the recipient of Regional and National Honour awards for his skatepark work across the continent. He holds a masters degree in landscape architecture and environmental planning with design expertise centered on parks and recreation development and urban design. Mark has served as project manager on over 100 notable concrete youth/skateparks and is a frequent presenter on youth park development across North America and Europe. Trevor Morgan bcomm

Mr. Morgan is an active skateboarder with nearly 15 years of large scale municipal project development experience. His dedicated work has contributed to the creation of over 50 highly recognized ongoing youth organizations, public skateparks, and emerging sport programs across Canada, the United States, Europe and South America. In addition to his role as Director of Business Development, Trevor serves as the principal of New Line’s Calgary office and will be responsible for community needs and analysis, facility and programming strategy, and contract administration.

RJ Dueck
nls - cost estimation / construction coordination
Mr. Dueck has over 20 years experience in large-scale construction in British Columbia and has provided site foreman/superintendent and project management services on multi-million dollar construction projects throughout western Canada. 8 years ago, RJ began working exclusively as the Construction Coordinator for New Line Skateparks Inc. In this capacity he has directed the construction on over 50 of the continent’s largest and most recognized concrete skateparks. In addition to his vast construction experience, RJ has remained a high level amateur skateboarder for over 19 years and is an official Judge for World Cup Skateboarding. Mr. Dueck will evaluate proposed conceptual designs for costs and coordinate all construction services.
Matt Lundin
vdz - autocad technician
Mr. Lundin is, by trade, an architectural and civil drafting technician, as well as a sport coach and avid skater/snowboarder. He received his training from the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV). Matt will help translate conceptual ideas into technical drawings and illustrative plans. Matt has applied his drafting skills to over 100 notable concrete skatepark developments across Canada, Europe, and most recently in the United States.
Jay McIntyre
nls - mechanical engineering technologist
Mr. McIntyre received his diploma of Mechanical Engineering from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. He brings a unique perspective to our firm due to his abilities as an engineering technician and as a skater with a skateboarding background of some 20 years. Jay will perform engineering reviews of technical aspects of skatepark construction. Jay’s ability to model design solutions has proven invaluable on complex drainage and site servicing issues on past park projects (100+).
Qiang Shan
vdz - design development / structural evaluation
Mr. Shan joins van der Zalm + associates inc. from RSP Architects Planners & Engineers of Singapore. He is trained as an architect and structural engineer. His experience in Asia as a project leader on many challenging projects, as well as his incredible computer rendering abilities, will prove valuable in communicating design ideas. Mr. Shan’s experience as a team leader for over 12 years on challenging urban projects in Asia will help guide our design team through concept development and beyond.

Austin Peterson vdz - certified arbourist
Mr Peterson is a certified arborist and horticulturalist. His help on this project will center around evaluation of the proposed site. He will provide insight as to potential impacts on surrounding plant communities and significant trees. Mr. Peterson will also consult on impact to micro-climates given potential modifications to existing vegetation and landscape.
Brad Felton

Mr Felton is a seasoned Landscape Architect and 3D graphic artist with a long history of skate facility development experience. He received his degree from the University of Western Australia and has since applied his design, documentation and project management skills to a broad range of project scales and types across Australia, UAE, the United States, South America and Canada. Brad will visualize the conceptual model into 3D graphic presentation drawings in preparation for documentation resolution.
Ariel Stagni
nls - youth liaison / construction administration
Ariel Stagni is community liaison and skatepark development coordinator for New Line East. He is a sponsored skateboarder of 16 years and grew up street skating in Mississauga. Ariel has an intimate understanding of skatepark layout and construction and served as the project manager on over 20 notable concrete parks to date. In addition to his work locally, Ariel continues to travel the world experiencing skateparks firsthand and participating in contests and demos as an official judge for World Cup Skateboarding. Ariel’s role will include communication with the skate community, design consultation, and regular site reviews to ensure the park is of the highest quality.
Jon Swinamer

Jon Swinamer is well known within the Atlantic skateboarding community. For over 10 years, Jon has been an active voice in the lobby for professionally planned, designed and constructed youth facilities within Nova Scotia and beyond. Moreover, Jon is the most experienced project administrator in the Maritimes Region, with 4 high profile concrete skateparks on his portfolio - including the recently completed Fall River, NS Skatepark and soon to be constructed Saint John, NB waterfront skate plaza. Jon will be responsible for payment certification and regular site reviews to ensure construction quality.

Covering a total area of over 44,000 square feet, the Plaza at the Forks consists of a meticulously detailed skateable sculpture plaza and expansive modern bowl complex tied seamlessly into the heart downtown Winnipeg’s urban fabric. The facility is the first of its kind within the world and has quickly become one of Winnipeg’s most celebrated public places and a destination for skateboarders and other urban explorers from around the globe. The concept for the Plaza was unique from the onset. The Forks, aptly named due to its position marking the amalgamation of Assiniboine and Red rivers, serves as one of Winnipeg’s preeminent meeting places. The area is steeped in over 6000 years of cultural and historical significance and is visited by over 4 million each year for a range of attractions and activities. Accordingly, the riverside setting is highly programmed with stringent development guidelines and a commitment to utmost site sensitivity. Our team’s challenge was to preserve the essence of this beloved public space while introducing a thoroughly modern world class youth/skatepark.

The Plaza at the Forks, Winnipeg MB - continued... The result is an urban landscape like no other. Far from the typical skatepark, the Plaza at the Forks is better described as a premier urban park/plaza and gathering place that is ‘perfect for skateboarding’. On any given day, one will see up to hundreds of visitors skateboarding, inline skating, biking, viewing art, strolling through, or simply sitting by to watch and socialize. It has truly become a place for all ages, back grounds, and interests to enjoy. Central Plaza - 29,000 sqft: Inspired by prized skate spots around the world and the rich history and culture of the Forks district, the main plaza area is made up of an endless combination of stair sets, banks, rails and ledges set within a host of custom sculptures and other art pieces - the majority of which may be ridden by skateboard, BMX or inline skates. Along with input from heritage and culture experts, our team undertook extensive consultation with leaders of the local skateboarding and art community to devise a final layout and detailing that would be optimal not only in skate function but also true to the culture and feel of the Forks and City of Winnipeg. Particular highlights include: -‘Spirit Fish’, a skateable sculpture designed to represent the nearby rivers and the mystical 6000 year old catfish that used to inhabit their waters - painted by local artisit Pat Lazo -Magic Carpet’, a super elevated and perfectly skateable concrete ribbon track referencing the rail way lines that met at Winnipeg’s main terminal within the Forks until 1923 -Numerous granite capped benches, ledges and blocks -Wire cut stone and acid etched concrete accents -Original Forks brick inlaid on pedestrian walkways

The Plaza at the Forks, Winnipeg MB - continued... Bowl Complex: Separate and adjacent to the Central Plaza, lies an 8,500 sqft. bowl unit combining traditional pool and modern coping lines. Walls begin at 5 feet and progress through a series of hips, elevators, extensions, and a pump bump to a massive 17 foot cradle and 13 foot over-vert pocket. Ridden by beginners through to the likes of Tony Hawk (who recently touted the park as ‘amazing’), the bowl can often become the center of activity with hundreds of spectators in the surrounding informal viewing areas. Our team finished the park off with unique lighting, a network of ‘safe’ pedestrian walkways and viewing areas, and consultation on the creation of an ‘Ambassadors’ program designed to educate visitors on skateboarding etiquette and ensure an enjoyable experience by all. The entire project is built on state of the art construction and engineering designed to withstand the difficult ground conditions and dramatic temperature fluctuations characteristic of the region. Proven cold weather skatepark construction techniques developed by New Line Skateparks were matched with innovative void forming and reinforcement technology implemented by PCL and local engineers. Over 200 precast piles, highly specialzed concrete mix designs, and an expansive grade beam system will ensure maximum surface integrity over many decades to come.

Chinook Winds Skate Plaza Airdrie, AB Regional Park
The City of Airdrie’s much anticipated Chinook Winds Skate Plaza will soon be a reality! Situated in the newly established Chinook Winds Regional Park, the highly integrated Skate Plaza will feature approximately 22,000 sqft of carefully detailed plaza and bowl terrain for all ages and abilities. The skatepark will compliment a multitude of complimentary surrounding recreation opportunities and will showcase various skateable sculpture/artistic elements developed in conjunction with local youth and the AEAA. Construction is slated for Spring 2009. Callingwood Park Skate Plaza Edmonton, AB Destination Park
Using the metaphor of a City Grid, the Callingwood Park Skate Plaza consists of nearly 19,500 square feet of interconnected plaza lines combined to create a network of iconic ‘spots’ spread across the virtual cityscape. Elements within the plaza are intended to span virtually all skating styles and abilities while still being true to legitimate street form. Along with a wide assortment of classic street skating ledge, block, rail and bank variations, a number of transition features modeled in the vein of famed natural urban ‘tranny’ spots like Montreal’s ‘BIG O’ and the Guadalajara NQP intersperse throughout the design. After years of hard work, the community of Charleswood (Winnipeg, MB) is now celebrating! The Michael Komenda Memorial Skatepark is officially complete and open to all! Covering a total area nearing 25,000 square feet, the park offers a well proportioned mix of bowl, traditional obstacle, and modern plaza terrain. Add to that coloured concrete, highly custom ledge detailing and some truly one-of-a-kind elements, and you have one of the region’s most ambitious projects to date. We are honored to have been a part of creating this special place to celebrate skateboarding and the life of Michael. Taber Youth Park Taber, AB Community Park
After 7 years of fundraising and planning, the busy Southern Alberta community of Taber is now home to the region’s newest modern concrete skate facility. Located in the Town’s beautiful Confederation Park, the park consists of just under 13,000 sqft of custom skateable terrain set within a nearly 18,000 sqft footprint. Along with the unique hard surface configuration, the project also includes a network of new walking paths, planting areas and informal spectator seating designed to improve park access and allow for comfortable viewing by the park’s high volume of users. SE 162 AVE Community Skatepark Happy Valley, OR Destination Park
Inspired by the ripples created from a skipping stone, the SE 162nd Avenue Community Skatepark, located in Happy Valley Oregon, features an organic, natural form that is a site to behold. This 30,000 square foot park features a mix of modern street features, artistic elements, flowing transition style terrain and a bowl that has been heavily blended into the surrounding features to the extent that is has been coined with the term, “street bowl.” The skatepark will be a highlight within the newly developed SE 162nd Avenue Community Park and a destination for Oregon skaters and citizens alike! The Thomas Haney Youth Action Park features approximately 17,000 sqft of unique modern plaza and bowl terrain tied directly into a busy British Columbia Public schoolyard. In addition to serving the local skateboarding and BMX community, the park also doubles as an outdoor ‘amphitheatre style’ performance space and casual socializing area. The project is the first active schoolyard skatepark development in Canada and has captured the attention of City’s around the world attempting to incorporate progressive public space for youth in non-traditional settings. Professional skateboarder, philanthropist and MTV star, Rob Dyrdek is at it again! Filming is now underway for Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory - the follow up to the original hit MTV show Rob and Big. Below are ‘sneak peak’ photos of the Fantasy Factory’s Skate Plaza - an approx 8,000 sqft concrete oasis our team designed to serve as a private training facility and skateable entry to Rob’s coorporate offices. The plaza was constructed in less than three weeks and features a unique blend of natural stone and integral coloured concrete brought to life in a myriad of custom street elements. The small Town of Black Diamond, Alberta is serving as an example to communities across the continent for how to tactfully develop a permanent small scale/low impact skateboarding/casual recreation space for local youth. The ‘skate path’ includes a wide variety of ledge and technical skateboarding features that double as informal seating and sculptural elements. ... Covering a total area of nearly 22,000 sqft, the Marina Park Skate Plaza features a unique combination of world class skateboarding terrain, locally inspired art installations and casual socializing space set within a vibrant landscape detail designed to capture the spirit of Thunder Bay’s renewed waterfront vision. Within the development, 3 distinct areas (Bowl, Plaza, Entrance) offer a range of varied features and materials selections designed to accommodate each specific skateboarding style while providing excellent passive spectator opportunities. Specific design highlights include: a completely customized skateable re-creation of the iconic ‘Sleeping Giant’, use of local stone work on key ledges and walls, an authentic pool style bowl unit, and a seamless integration into the surrounding park trail system. Located in the newly developed Brushy Creek Sports Park, the Cedar Park Skate Plaza offers a variety of modern plaza and bowl terrain woven seamlessly into the site’s natural surroundings. Built in 2004 as a temporary youth facility for the Vancouver Parks Board, the Vancouver Skate Plaza successfully uses an underutilized scrap of industrial land under the Georgia street Viaduct and transforms it into an internationally recognized street style skateboarding plaza.The design was developed in close partnership with the Vancouver Skate Coalition, the Vancouver Police Service, and surrounding community members through a series of interactive workshops and a custom online forum set up for ongoing stakeholder feeback. Key emphasis was placed on creating true ‘urban form’, maximizing available budget through creative use of existing site infrastructure and value engineering, identifying appropriate skateable and non skateable access routes both to and around the site, and the implementation of sound CPTED principals. Since its completion, the park has served as the basis for case studies across North America for the development of successful youths parks in areas undergoing urban renewal. In 2005, the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects acknowledged the project’s success in the community with a Regional Honour Award.

Located in the City’s prized riverside Wascana Park, the Regina Skate Plaza features nearly 17,000 sqft of unique urban skate terrain punctuated with numerous granite accents and 3 major ‘green’ islands. The design was developed over a 2 year period in conjunction with local skaters, surrounding community groups and a diverse team of planners from the Wascana Centre Authority. A vocal and energetic group of teens (led by dedicated volunteer - Connie Newman) have pushed forward to realize their dream of raising enough funds to build a new concrete skatepark for the community of St. James, Winnipeg. The park features a long linear street area ‘forked’ into a large mini ramp complex and plaza line. Full site integration, noise attenuation and preservation of existing vegetation are key aspects of this project. At over 15,000 square feet, the Town of Morinville is now home to one of Alberta’s largest modern skateparks. Chatham-Kent Skatepark is a medium sized facility that will serve as one of 4 parks being designed by VDZ NLS for the ChathamKent area. The park features a plaza style development that integrates with the larger context of Lions Park. Construction tenders are complete and work is slated to begin Fall 2005. The plaza style terrain is unique for the region and will designate the park as a ag-ship destination within the surrounding area. Because this park has been planned as a part of a larger network of skate facilities, it must be larger, provide more features, and cater to a more advanced user. As VDZ/NLS’s first skatepark facility in Europe, Linkopings represented a unique and special learning experience/ opportunity to work with local north European construction professionals, Scandinavian youth and civic officials to create a truly Swedish youth facility (with a Canadian touch). The park features ‘street’ terrain with a fully integrated landscape. The park was constructed by Skanska international. The completed facility was the host site for the World Cup ‘Etnies’ Open and is the largest concrete skate facility in Northern Europe. The site for Abbotsford Skate park features a combination of many different biosystems: a forest grove, a grass field, hardscaped paths/play areas, and natural areas. The design had to fit into all of these existing landscapes without causing damage to any vegetation planning to be saved. The result is a park situated in a very beautiful setting.
