In spite of the apathy that I’ve felt for new technologies and the resistance that for a long time I’ve put up against them, I new that it was something that I had the responsibility to engage with since our apathy towards them would only create a representational realm devoid of spirit and empathy.

Homecoming is a word that also seeks to create horizontality with a crowd with which I have significant cultural differences. This word in American culture relates to a celebration of completion of an academic stage, whereas in Spanish it means a return and is inevitably related to the JudeoChristian tradition (which Levinas refers to) of the hospitality shown to someone that is lost and in need of shelter.

In the Iliad Spirits that had no proper burial got lost and wandered eternally deprived of their sense of self. New technologies have overwhelmed us with information that lack a biography and don’t arouse empathy in the viewer; archiving mechanisms control societies which are reduced to digits, obliterating biographical data, their own history, their bodily character.

Homecoming is the name I picked for my MFA thesis show and the term coined by Emmanuel Levinas to respond to the dystopian sense of homelessness in the midst of modern technological development referred by Heidegger, and to make us understand the idea of home as something in its inclusive dimension.

When I was a boy, I could watch television for eight hours at a time, twelve in a good day. I would tell time by my favorite programs; keenly aware of the elements in them that defined the culture for which I lived. Morning for updates, noontime for serious, daytime for gossip and drama. 5pm gets sober, 6pm gets nervous, 7pm gets exiting, while after ten means danger. As I grew older, I realized the best hours of television were between 3-4am. These are the times when all you have is passion, grit and madness. Primal. Illusive. Solitary. These are the times when live Weather Channel reporters get wacky and delirious, when Public Access Television delves into their deepest, darkest corners and even re-runs become too good for the likes of you.

Whenever on a long trip and budget allows, I will find the smallest town over 500 on the map, in the most remote sector of my direction. I will find the old highway off the glitz strip and search for what looks to be the oldest, cheapest anddocumentation most forgottenly American motel. Exhibit 2015

I will find a feast for both the body and the mind, and revel in the luxury. It will likely be a Monday, or will feel as though, and they will have something guiltily extravagant to buy at the local service station. A bottle of wine, pop magazine, or Polish hot dog, perhaps. Lady Luck on my side, the Taco John’s will still be open. If not, I will order whatever’s handy from a 24hr roadside dive, to accompany what would hopefully be a Molotov cocktail of wine, smokes and endless TV. Once returned, I take off my shoes with a deep victorious sigh, create an appropriate pillowed nesting zone, and finally grasp the wand- the taser- zapper- and clicker of wonder--- powering up the box that once gave me so much joy as a boy. But it all waits in anticipation for that glorious hour between three and four.

I use types of language such as dialogues in When I was A Cricket, poetry in The Rhythm of Summer Nights, metalogues in Dancing, terminology in American Life, riddles in Distance, texts and human-made language in A Pseudo to access an alternative vision of the relationship between humans and nature.

Can breaking rules of language become a new rule? This question makes me pay more attention to the operation of language and makes me more interested in how to use new rules of language in my work. I use this interruption to expressive means in my works by using new rules between Chinese and English and between humans and animals.

the same question, but nothing can be changed no matter how hard she tries. This video also arouses the viewers’ feelings about their own character, and establishes a new definition of repetition. Repeating one thing many times is commonly characterized as boring, but the dialogue in my video is a little comical with humorous language that includes: speaking incoherently, giving an irrelevant answer, and self-contradiction. This variation keeps the viewers’ interest. In addition, each short conversation has its own theme and scene; all of the scenes are similar, but each has changes in setting and wardrobe, as well as dialogue, which lets viewers look forward to the next one.

My video “No Way Out” is an introspective work that questions the trifles in daily life that puzzle us. The conversations in this video are between multiple versions of myself (Strong Ones and Weak Ones) and are a visualization of the multiples of myself as a character. Strong Ones and Weak Ones personify my anxiety, confusion, and stubbornness in daily life. Over time, they are shown having a similar dialogue again and again with no resolution. This represents the unease of making difficult decisions for school and work, and in relationships, and thinking about it over and over again trying to imagine a better ending result. Strong Ones keep asking

My work is also related to my mental state, which is closely connected to Zen Buddhism. It reflects my questions and thinking and shows different states of living. People are not perfect, we all have limitations, how people struggle with these limitations is what I am trying to explore with my art. The overall approach to my artistic work is not only based on my Chinese cultural heritage but also on studies and lectures of European and American philosophers such as Sigmund Freud, Slavoj Zizek, Lacan; and artists such as Dada artists, French comic artist Moebius, Maya Deren, Roy Andersson, Valie Export, and Peter Greenaway. I use theories to put deeper meaning into my work and at the same time, make my work thoughtful and experimental.

I studied comic art and animation at Beijing Film Academy. I like the rich and meaningful form of narrative, so my work always has several layers and inner clues in it, which also can be regarded as a kind of montage and composition of different elements. Time and spaces are being stretched in my work. As time passes and space changes, people’s perspectives and states are changed. One subject can be explored in multiple situations with multiple meanings; one person can be presented in younger or older age or with different identities; one event seen from several points of view.

The cycle of my work has centered around the topics of generation distance, freedom and limitation, exchangeability of positions and states.
