Insigts from a professional

We talked to Isabelle a mother and a professional when it comes to school start. She works with preschools in the Copenhagen area, and she kindly gave us some advice based on her expertise. What have you experienced as the greatest challenge for children in your care? The biggest challenges for children who move with their families are all the big changes in their life - new people, new home, new country, new habits, new climate - and adapting to the local culture and language.

What were your thoughts regarding where to send your children to school when you moved to Denmark? What do you recommend regarding making it easier for international children to start in a school in a new country?

We chose the French school for our children because we did not know how long we would stay in Denmark. We know that there is a French school in most big cities around the world so it would have been easy for our children to change schools within the same French school system if we had moved somewhere else. It was all about continuity in their education.

I would recommend that the parents are completely comfortable and happy with their choice of school so that the child also feels comfortable. If the parents criticize the school or express negative opinions regarding the school, then the children will feel uncomfortable and unhappy themselves. In this time of big change in their life, children need as much emotional support and positivity as possible.

Thanks Isabelle for your advice and professional insights on school start for international children!

Do you have tips and tricks that can ease schoolstart for both child and parent? I would recommend that parents try to meet other parents from the school so that the families can start a social life with people who can share their experiences and knowledge, whether they are local families or international.

A little recap for you if you need inspiration on how to prepare your child for school start: 

Be comfortable with your choice of school and talk about the school in positive terms!



Start a social life with other families at your child’s school so you can share experiences and knowledge.
