GuYS WeeKenD Grab the guys and hit the town. Here’s a sample itinerary to get you started. DAY 1 Devote your first day in Columbus to checking out some of the city’s newest gastropubs, all offering craft beers and high-quality pub grub. 101 Beer Kitchen in Dublin, on the city’s northwest side, boasts an impressive selection of brews on tap, housemade soft pretzels, ale and cheddar soup topped with pork croutons, and housemade mac and cheese. 16
The Crest Gastropub on Indianola Avenue in Clintonville got a facelift at the beginning of the year and has been packed ever since. The bar offers 60 beers on tap and the kitchen serves comfortable fare for lunch, dinner and late-night diners. Columbus restaurateur Cameron Mitchell’s newest endeavor, The Pearl, opened in the Short North Arts District in February. The tavern-meets-oyster-

room-meets-gastropub offers a well-curated list of handcrafted cocktails and local brews. The jewels of the menu are, of course, the oysters. Order them cold on the half-shell or baked and topped with Parmesan, bacon and garlic. Also make time to explore the links; Columbus is the No. 2 golf city in the country according to Golf Magazine. Central Ohio has more than 100 public and private courses, including three ranked among the top 100 in the world.
DAY 2 Spend the next day exploring the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington
on the city’s east side. See vintage bikes and displays honoring Hall of Fame inductees. For dinner, choose between Rodizio Grill in the Arena District, where you’ll enjoy Brazilian-style steak, or T. Murray’s Bar and Kitchen in the Brewery District, serving traditional comfort food with a modern twist. After dinner, hit the Hollywood Casino Columbus or Scioto Downs Racino. Gambling not your group’s style? Instead head to Brothers Drake Meadery and Bar in the Short North Arts District and sample some of the bar’s unique mead-based cocktails. The meadery hosts live music several nights of the week.

Highball Halloween
Q&A WItH keLLI mArtIN
Have you always been interested in fashion? When did it become your passion? It’s always been in me. When I was really little my parents and grandma really let me express myself in whatever way I wanted. I was free to wear crazy stuff and funny fingernail polish. What’s the style of your line, Anti.Label? I have a love-hate relationship with fashion and the whole industry. The line started out kind of as a joke. It would definitely be described as feminine silhouettes with unconventional fabrics, street style mixed with high fashion.
the Arena District and the Columbus College of Art & Design. In the Short North and beyond, there are local boutiques and designers and independent artists. Especially with Ohio State University here, there’s a lot of street style and a lot of culture—more than one would expect from Ohio. What are some of your favorite Columbus fashion events? Highball Halloween is growing and—it’s definitely a highlight of the fashion scene in Columbus. There are so many community elements involved with Highball, from the lighting to the costumes to the people who come from all over the city. The Halloween costumes are ridiculous! There’s also the Independents’ Day fest. There are a lot of independent retailers that have been starting to show during this festival, which takes place in September.

Columbus native Kelli Martin is no stranger to the world of high fashion. After attending fashion school in Los Angeles and competing on the fifth season of “Project Runway,” Martin is back in Columbus working on her own line, Anti.Label. You can learn more about Kelli, her Anti.Label line and her designs online at anti-label-clothing.com.

Located in the heart of historic German Village, family-owned Schmidt’s Sausage Haus has served authentic German specialties since 1967. It’s the family history and high-quality food that keep people coming back year after year. Schmidt’s, which has been run by five generations of the family, serves food that is consistently great. During his visit to Schmidt’s, Richman enjoyed a popular bahama mama and colossal half-pound cream puff.
Richman successfully completed the Dagwood Challenge during his visit to the Ohio Deli on High Street south of downtown. The two-and-a-half pound sandwich is piled high with turkey, ham, roast beef and cheese and served with a mound of fries. Are you up for the Dagwood Challenge? You’ll just need to finish the entire sandwich, fries included, in less than 30 minutes. Do so and you’ll win a T-shirt (and some serious bragging rights, of course).
Piled high with two beef patties and a laundry list of toppings, the Thurmanator is the most famous burger on the menu at The Thurman Cafe—and one of the best burgers in the country, according to Food and Wine magazine. Their readers ranked The Thurman Cafe’s burger at number eight on the list of the 20 best burgers. The German Village joint has served burgers and more for 71 years, and despite the often long wait for a table, people keep coming back.

ear-round, Columbus is an athletics powerhouse. But as any true fan knows, it’s in the fall and winter that things really get serious. From Buckeye football and the All American Quarter Horse Congress to action-packed hockey and a matchup between two of the world’s best soccer teams, Columbus has you covered—no matter your sporting persuasion. In the fall, soccer fans don another layer of black and gold gear and head north of downtown to Crew Stadium— the nation’s first soccer-specific stadium—for the Columbus Crew’s lateseason games. Fall schedule highlights for the Major League Soccer team include the last opportunity to defeat rival Chicago Fire on Sept. 21 and the final regular-season home game against the New England Revolution on Oct. 27. The season’s most anticipated
48
matchup is the USA vs. Mexico 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Sept. 10. Come cheer on the red, white and blue, who hold an unbeaten all-time record at Crew Stadium. Head to the Horseshoe on The Ohio State University campus to catch Urban Meyer’s Buckeye football team. The Bucks kick off the season against Buffalo on Aug. 31 and look poised to reclaim the Big 10 Championship title that they last won in 2009. The Buckeye men’s and women’s basketball teams keep things exciting as the weather cools down. Both teams play home games at the Schottenstein Center’s Value City Arena. The men’s team, led by coach Thad Matta, is expected to make a legitimate run for the Big 10 Championship with the leadership of guard and fan favorite Aaron Craft.
Tailgating for Buckeye football games is practically a sport in itself. Here’s what you need to know for game day. First, know where to go. The Horseshoe is, of course, the prime tailgating spot (season parking permits only) and revelers can be found enjoying picnic lunches and cold (or hot, depending on the game!) beverages up until kickoff. The Fawcett Center on Olentangy River Road near Lane Avenue is another popular spot that has public parking. For details on parking, visit campusparc.com/osu/events/football. Need some gear? Stop in The Buckeye Corner on Lane Avenue. Before heading into the game (or watching from one of the campus favorites like Eddie George’s Grille 27), stop by St. John Arena for the Skull Session, OSU’s pep rally, which begins two hours before kickoff of every home game. The Ohio State marching band gets fans in the spirit with “Hang on Sloopy” and more. For a traditional (albeit a bit raucous) tailgate experience, head to the Varsity Club on Lane Avenue. It’s been a Buckeye must-go since it opened in 1959, and fans will arrive well before kickoff and stay until the wee hours.
Equestrian fans head to suburban Columbus each fall for The New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix & Family Day, hosted on the grounds of the breathtaking residence of Les Wexner, founder of Limited Brands, on Sept. 22. An incredibly popular family event, the day is complete with a family-friendly concert, a showjumping competition, games and more. For more equestrian entertainment, the All American Quarter Horse Congress, Oct. 4-27, is the world’s largest single-breed horse show. Hundreds of thousands of people attend the show each year at the Ohio Expo Center to take in the competition, vendor-packed trade show, demonstrations and more. The puck drops for the first time at Nationwide Arena in September, when the Columbus Blue Jackets begin their first season as a member of the NHL’s Eastern Conference, setting up rivalries with Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York. Visiting fans can look for trip ideas on experiencecolumbus.com.

Easily one of Columbus’ most-loved shopping destinations, Easton Town Center is home to an ever-growing number of department stores, local boutiques and designer retailers. Located on the city’s northeast side, the shopping center was called one of the “5 Most Innovative Malls in the World” by Inside Retail.
