At last night's meeting School Council received a letter from the Winters Flat PS AEU Sub-branch which described the current industrial situation and detailed the possible actions should agreement not be reached. This letter was discussed and the following motion was passed unanimously. ‘School Council endorses the action that our teaching and support staff are taking during the current industrial dispute. We believe these steps are important in safeguarding the quality of our children’s education.’
OHS ISSUES As a school we need to look after the health and wellbeing of everyone. Due to the number of children with asthma we need to remind parents and children that spray-on deodorant is not to be brought to school, or taken on camps and excursions. If children need to bring deodorant, a roll-on deodorant is permitted.
MANGO DRIVE We hope you are busily getting your mango orders organised – remember the family that sells the most trays of mangoes wins $100 to spend at “Jumping Jupiters” the local toy store. Thanks to the Horvath family for their support. Here are some mango recipes to whet your appetite -
Mango Ice Cream Topping Ready in 25 mins Ingredients Serves: 4 3 cups mangoes, peeled, seeded and chopped 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon orange juice 3 tablespoons water. Preparation method Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 15 mins 1. In a pan over medium heat, combine the mangoes, butter, brown sugar, lemon juice, orange juice, and water. Stir until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and serve.
Mango and Yoghurt Pops 3 Ripe Mangoes – cheeks removed - coarsely chopped. 4 260g (1Cup) Vanilla Yoghurt. Place 3 ripe mangoes, cheeks removed, coarsely chopped, in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. Transfer to a bowl. Add 260g (1 cup) vanilla yoghurt and gently fold until mixture is just combined. Spoon the mango mixture evenly among eight 80ml (1/3-cup) capacity ice-block moulds. Place in the freezer for 8 hours or until firm. We have sourced the mangoes directly from the grower in Far North Queensland– delivery dates cannot be completely definite as the mangoes will be picked at the optimum time – delivery will be early December.
CONNECTING WITH SOCIAL MEDIA As an additional method of communicating with our school community and engaging the wider community, the School Council endorsed the use of social media at last night’s meeting. A moderated Facebook page has been created which will profile the school and also provide updates regarding future events, report on past events, and promote other items of interest. The page can be found at http://www.facebook.com/#!/WintersFlatPrimarySchoolCastlemaine Best Wishes, Mary-anne Rooney Principal.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB As my youngest daughter is leaving Winters Flat this year, I am looking for someone to take over my volunteer role as Scholastic Book Co-ordinator. This involves sorting and distributing book leaflets, placing orders on-line, then delivering books to school and organizing payment to give to the office. I will help train this person for the job. Scholastic is important to our school because not only can we buy great books at good prices, but the school also earns bonus points so that we can buy new books for our library. Donna Lawrence.

CASTLEMAINE CHILDREN’S LITERATURE FESTIVAL Thanks to everyone who took part in this year's Castlemaine Children's Literature Festival. Students from Winter's Flat had a wonderful time with Ajak Kwai and Simon Lewis at St Mary's School, and who also came to the Winter's Flat playgroup for a sing and a dance in the week before the holidays. The Australian Government is proud to be associated with this project, which was made possible by Festivals Australia, an Australian Government program which supports cultural activity at regional and community festivals. On Saturday the 6th of October Winters Flat hosted three Festival events, with our very own Stephanie Alexander Kitchen specialist Jane Grylls cooking food inspired by books including “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” pizza and the “The Queen of Hearts' Tarts”. Trace Balla then led an imaginative workshop using plants from the kitchen garden as stimulus. Finally, the Winters Flat kitchen was the perfect place for afternoon tea with an astrophysicist, with many Winters Flat students participating in a lively discussion, and yummy afternoon tea provided by Red Beard Bakery and the Little Red Apple shop.
