Personal Safety
• Do not carry large amounts of cash or important documents, such as your passport, in your wallet or purse, unless you really need them • Keep a photocopy of your passport, plane tickets, etc., in a safe place • Be careful when using ATM machines or withdrawing money at banks • Never use shortcuts to your destination. Main thoroughfares which are well lit and used by others are the safest routes • Never walk alone through isolated areas of the city during the day or at night • Never accept a lift from a stranger • Always travel with others – groups are harder to target than individuals • Always carry a mobile phone • Do not walk around with large, expensive cameras visible • Be very careful with handbags or rucksacks, especially in cafés, pubs and restaurants • Know the emergency contact details of the Gardai (999 or 112), your nearest local Garda Station (Bishopstown 021 4541012/Anglesea St. 021 4522000)
Nights-Out Safety
• Before a night out, plan how you are going to get home • Charge your phone and make sure there’s credit in it • When you’re out, look out for one another and if you decide to leave always tell your mates where you’re going and who with

Fact: Awareness is the key to prevention. • Never accept a drink or cigarette from someone you don’t know and never let your drink out of your sight • Always practice safe sex. If you’re sexually active, carry condoms • Avoid mixing your drinks and never mix alcohol with drugs. Alcohol can reduce the effective of some medication • Don’t accept a lift from someone you don’t know personally or from someone you know has been drinking • Don’t walk home alone • Know your limits!
• Do not put your name, residence number and/or address on your key • Do not have large amounts of money or valuables in your room/apartment/house • Take anything valuable home with you during your holidays and at weekends – thieves are aware of student habits • Record the serial numbers of items and mark property with an indelible pen. Marked property is hard to dispose of and criminals usually ignore it REMEMBER to insure personal belongings, especially laptops and jewellery.
Accommodation Safety
Road/Transport Safety
• Never leave doors or windows open or unlocked, day or night, whether you are at home or not • Never leave windows ajar at night for ventilation • Install and use locks on your doors and windows • Ensure that door and window locks are of good standard • Pester your landlord to fix any broken locks or improve security immediately; it is their obligation to do so • Lock your doors when using the kitchen, shower, or toilet, or even when you are simply calling next door • Never give the key to your apartment to friends and do not leave keys in letterboxes/under mats for collection by friends • Remember to insure all your personal possessions
When leaving your accommodation:
• Close the curtains in your room and turn on the light and/or radio to give the impression that the room is occupied • Do not advertise your absence by putting notes on your door or on facebook • Know who is at the door before opening it. Ask for identification (I.D.) from anyone you don’t know. If someone comes to your door and asks to use your phone to call for help, offer to make the call instead • Keep emergency numbers near the phone • Report any strangers or suspicious characters loitering in apartment corridors, outside apartments or houses
s Fact: Most burglarie ne eo m occur when so is at home.
When waiting for a bus/train at night, stand in a well-lit area near a group of people • Check with the driver that the bus/train is going to your destination • If possible, avoid planning to catch the last bus/train home, if you miss it you may have problems getting home • If you do miss the last bus/train, consider a taxi • If you lose property on public transport, contact the transport operator to find out their policy on lost and found. Also, check with the local Garda station. Items found can often be handed in there • Lock your bicycle when not in use, preferably to a cycle rack or other sturdy fixture. • Never leave valuables with your bicycle • Have your bike security marked and keep a record in a safe place • Always use a cycle helmet and reflective clothing • Cork has many cycle paths and lanes – use them. Do not cycle on pedestrian footpaths • Before starting to cycle in Cork, familiarise yourself with roads, traffic systems and the local area. ‘Rules of the Road’ booklets are available in most book stores • Remember to insure your bicycle
Your safety is of paramount concern to us, your Students’ Union. If you have any questions, issues or need any information, call up to me, your Welfare Officer, or email suwelfare@cit.ie

O
n the 12th December 2012, at a glittering event in “Farmleigh House”, Phoenix Park, Dublin; Gay Byrne presented CIT Students’ Union Safety Week 2012 with a Road Safety Authority (RSA) Leading Lights in Road Safety Award in the Education (Third Level) Category. ly with the RSA, An Garda Síochána, Cork City Fire Service, HSE Ambulance Service and Cork City Council and I would like to thank them sincerely for their help.”
Speaking after the event, Niamh Hayes Vice-President Welfare, CIT Students’ Union and Project Manager of Safety Week 2012 said, “I am delighted that CIT SU Safety Week 2012 has received this prestigious award. I organised this event with the aim of making students, staff and members of the local community in Bishopstown, more aware of the dangers that are faced when using our roads daily. Whether you are a driver, passenger, pedestrian or cyclist, we as road users have a responsibility for the safety of others. The success of CIT Students’ Union Safety Week 2012 was achieved by working close-
Some of the events of CIT Students’ Union Safety Week 2012 which stood out to the judging panel, which was chaired by Mr. Gay Byrne, were the releasing of 186 balloons to represent all the lives lost on Irish roads in 2011; the RSA Shuttle Bus and roll-over simulator which attracted over 2500 students; and the re-enactment of a road traffic collision which was attended by hundreds of students and staff and was broadcasted on local radio. The event attracted lots of media attention and it is hoped that the event will become even bigger and more successful in 2013.
