Bring on the heat, bring on the Summer Reading Program! Until recently the Summer Reading Program was just for kids. Now we have rewards for all ages. We want to keep everyone reading in June, July, and August. Our themes, incentives and grand prizes are the best. Registration is paperless and can be completed from home. It has never been as easy to register and track what you or your family are reading. Count on your library this spring and summer to deliver top-notch programs and resources. Prince George library will display the artwork of Dawn Angela Dickson-VanNess an author/artist. A book inspiring series called 'The Red Scarves,' is a pictorial narrative of a woman's journey through imaginative landscape depicted primarily with oil on canvas. This is a precursor to a novella that will add further details to the tale. The opening and gallery talk will be on May 10. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a villager of Jamestown in 1607? Author Connie Lapallo will visit Dinwiddie on May 6 to discuss her latest novel,When the Moon Has No More Silver. Part of the very popular Jamestown Sky series, this novel follows the lives of women and children living in Jamestown from 1610 to 1620.

Did you know...? According to a 2010 School Library Journal article, youth who participate in summer reading programs improve their reading skills to the point where they are 52 Lexile points ahead of their peers who do not. The program also addresses what is sometimes referred to as a “summer learning loss”; instead of losing knowledge and skills during the summer months, youth who participate actually gain. What is perhaps more impressive though are the results found for those who didn't read during the summer. According to this same article, youth who didn't read over the summer were two years behind those who did. ARLS wants to give every child in Prince George and Dinwiddie Counties and the city of Hopewell the opportunity to be in the group of students who thrive.
