eXplore Central North Island Welcome to an adventure through the Central North Island of New Zealand. These easy to navigate touring routes were created after the Regional Tourism Organisations of the Central North Island decided to work together to promote the area as one destination.
The Regional Tourism Organisations of the eXplore Central North Island regions start on the Pacifi c Coast Highway and include Destination Coromandel, Tourism Bay of Plenty, Tourism Eastland and Hawke’s Bay Tourism.
002
Heading inland the regions of the Thermal Explorer Highway include Visit Ruapehu, Destination Great Lake Taupo, Destination Rotorua Marketing and Hamilton & Waikato Tourism. The Volcanic Loop is an exciting add-on to the Thermal Explorer Highway and takes in the eastern shores of Lake Taupo and Ruapehu regions. These organisations are non-profi t and are devoted to promoting the areas they represent and assisting you, the travel trade, in selling and obtaining information on the regions of the Pacifi c Coast Highway and Thermal Explorer Highway.
eXplore Central North Island
Unique scenery and adventure awaits all who travel the two diverse touring routes of the Pacific Coast Highway and the Thermal Explorer Highway with the Volcanic Loop extension that makes up one of the best recognised touring routes in the world – eXplore Central North Island.
eXplore Central North Island – Two International Gateways The Central North Island regions have never been more accessible with the international gateway airport of Rotorua International Airport receiving flights directly from Australia. Rotorua International Airport has been the gateway for travellers around New Zealand for the
past 40 years, and has been flying Trans Tasman to and from Sydney with Air New Zealand since December 2009. The Airport is also connected to every other New Zealand centre on the Air New Zealand domestic network. Auckland International Airport is also a major gateway and access point onto the start of the Thermal Explorer and Pacific Coast Highways.

The city’s rich cultural mix and vibrant centre makes it a perfect place to experience the friendly kiwi lifestyle. Top restaurants and nightlife coupled with extensive shopping options and a leading arts sector complement the world-class events and visitor activities on offer.

39 Waitomo Caves Road, State Hwy 37, Waitomo Caves Aranui Cave is set in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, 5 minutes drive from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It is named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Maori man who first discovered this previously hidden gem back in 1910. Aranui Cave has a natural cave entrance and is the smallest and most delicate of Waitomo’s three main caves. As a dry cave without a river running through it, it houses very little life past its entrance. Stepping into the cave, you will soon discover some of the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations in New Zealand. Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place that is steeped in Maori myth and legend. As such, it occupies a very special place in the hearts of the people of the Waitomo district. Aranui Cave is an intimate tour where you will see varied cave formations up close and enjoy an experience you will never forget.

Just 2.5 hours drive from Auckland is Rotorua, a hot spot with so much on offer that you’ll never want to leave. Perfect for a 3 night stay, Rotorua has 18 lakes, miles of native forest, geothermal mystique and rich cultural history.
ROTORUA
Rotorua is a great spot for families and couples to soak up the best of New Zealand’s fascinating Maori culture; to satisfy your inner adrenalin junkie, lose yourself in the great outdoors, visit wildlife attractions, geothermal wonderlands, spas, museums, parks and much more. Sparkling lakes and magnificent forests also make Rotorua ideal for fishing, sailing, mountain biking, hiking... You name it. What better way to spend a few days?
032
18 Sparkling Lakes: The 18 lakes dotted around Rotorua are all an easy drive from the city centre. These havens of serenity are fringed with native bush and surrounded by soft golden sand, perfect for stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing and watersports, or otherwise to relax in seclusion. These lakes, combined with nearby rivers and streams, also make Rotorua a fisherman’s dream with trophy trout to be caught year round.
New Zealand’s Top Adventure Playground: Rotorua has a myriad of world first adventure activities such as rolling downhill in a plastic globe known as a Zorb or OGO, hurtling down Mt Ngongotaha on a Luge and racing in a shweeb (human powered monorail). Get the adrenalin pumping by raceline karting at Off Road NZ, tackle the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world (7m high) on the Kaituna River and something you can’t miss is the world renowned mountain biking.
Maori Culture: Rotorua is the heartland of Maori culture in New Zealand. The locals delight in sharing their legends, music and arts with visitors. Sample indigenous flavours, participate in authentic cultural performances and see master artists at work in the carving and weaving schools at Te Puia. You’ll be spellbound by this dynamic culture.

Geothermal Wonderland: Billowing steam and a faint scent of sulphur linger over Rotorua, turning the city into a dramatic geothermal wonderland. Bubbling mud pools and spectacular geysers that erupt into the sky make the area an exciting place to be. This volcanic activity has attracted visitors since the 1800s and remains a huge draw card. Visitors can head to the many thermal reserves meandering around crater lakes, soaking in mud and mineral pools, as well as checking out fumeroles and colourful silica terraces sure to impress.
Spa: Rotorua is nature’s spa of the South Pacific with rejuvenating therapies springing from thermal activity unlike anything you’ll see elsewhere in the world. Indulge in a decadent soak in the thermal waters which have curative and invigorating properties while overlooking Lake Rotorua. Slide into a glorious mud bath and be pampered with therapies which cleanse and purify the skin.

Well known as a popular holiday destination for Kiwis and a favourite of international visitors, the region is dominated by the enormous lake formed by one of the world’s largest ever volcanic eruptions, and by the majestic and sacred mountains of the dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park to the South. Taupo is the largest town in the Great Lake Taupo region, and is an active and cosmopolitan lakeside community with a vibrant hospitality scene and quality experiences.

Only 35 minutes from Taupo, Turangi is situated at the southern end of the Great Lake and is central to many outdoor activities in the region. Turangi is best known for its world famous trout fishing on the Tongariro River, but is also well known for white water rafting and kayaking, mountain biking and hiking. Turangi is a handy accommodation base for accessing the Tongariro National Park, where in summer hikers can trek the world famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and in winter can ski on the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu, the largest ski area in New Zealand, and an active volcano as well.
To the northwest of Taupo is Mangakino, one of the North Island’s best kept secrets. With the Pureora Forest Park on one side and Lake Maraetai on the other, the focus here is on outdoor activities - water sports including trout fishing and wakeboarding, mountain biking and hiking. There are two National Cycle Trails within close proximity - The Timber Trail in The Pureora Forest Park, and the Waikato River Trail, running along the banks of Waikato River and Lake Maraetai. Both Trails are dual walking and mountain biking trails.
Did you know: You cannot buy Great Lake Taupo’s legendary trout. This region is one of the last true wild trout fisheries in the world. You won’t find trout in the menu in any local restaurants, as trout is neither farmed nor harvested. If you want to buy one you have to catch one yourself. Fortunately, with the expertise of local guides, this is not too difficult. And if you’d like it cooked to perfection, many of our local restaurants will prepare your catch for you!

neighbouring Whanganui National Park. The remoteness in places provides a glimpse at how early Maori and European settlers survived, living off the land and finding solitude high on a mountain peak or deep within lowland native bush. True Kiwi hospitality is never far with lively ski towns and peaceful historic villages all within a short drive of each other. New Zealand’s first and oldest National Park; Tongariro National Park is rich in both cultural identity and dramatic, aweinspiring natural scenery. Three active andesitic volcanoes are situated within the Park’s 79,000 hectare boundary; Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings), Tongariro and Ruapehu. For tangata whenua (people of the land), the mountains are a vital part of their history. Their whakapapa (genealogy) and legends are venerated accordingly.

Hiking is popular here with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, ranked among the top ten one-day treks in the world, passing over volcanic terrain, cold mountain springs, historic lava flows, an active crater, steaming vents and emeraldcoloured lakes. The starting point is just minutes drive from Whakapapa and National Park Villages or stay in Ohakune, Raetihi or Taumarunui a short 30 minute journey. Transport departs from your accommodation daily during summer. During winter a guided service is recommended. For the less energetic, Ohakune, Whakapapa and Taumarunui offer several short walks to beautiful waterfalls or through ancient forests. The longer
Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of two Great Walks in the Ruapehu region, offers those with a little more time a chance to get off the beaten track. The regions other Great Walk is in fact a three-day canoe journey on the majestic Whanganui River. ‘Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au’ I am the river, the river is me are the words that embody the spiritual, cultural and historical relationship of Whanganui Maori and the river that holds their ancestry. New Zealand’s longest navigable river; the Whanganui winds it’s way through Whanganui National Park, home to New Zealand’s largest population of North Island brown kiwi and the rare and endangered blue duck (whio). The threeday canoe journey starts in Whakahoro, or the two and five-day adventures leave from Taumarunui. One-day jet boat journeys, with or without a canoe section start at Taumarunui or Pipiriki. Day two of the three-day journey, or a one-hour jet boat ride from Pipiriki, is the Bridge to Nowhere. This impressive concrete structure, nearly 40m above the Mangapurua River stands as a poignant reminder of the pioneers who once tried to farm this hostile land. During World War 1, the New Zealand government offered land on the banks of the Whanganui River to returned servicemen to convert into farms. The land was remote and road access limited. By 1944 every man had taken his family and abandoned the land. The history of those returned serviceman is intrinsically linked to the National Army Museum at Waiouru, the last village on the Volcanic Loop.
North of Whanganui National Park, other forgotten worlds are dotted along the decommissioned Taumarunui to Stratford railway line, now accessible by converted golf carts. Travel through rolling paddocks and pitch-black tunnels, spectacular bluffs and native bush to the settlement of Whangamomona, declared a public by locals who once elected a goat as their President.
Ruapehu
Come winter the picture postcard perfect snowcapped mountains of Tongariro National Park are celebrated for more than just their cultural significance. Mt Ruapehu, the highest peak in the North Island at 2797m, is home to Turoa, Whakapapa and Tukino Ski Areas and boasts the longest vertical descent in the Southern Hemisphere. Turoa has the longest operating season (June to November) and on a clear day offers views of Mt Taranaki.

Sightseeing chairlift rides are available at Whakapapa during summer. Ride to Knoll Ridge Café for lunch or hike to Mt Ruapehu’s summit for magnificent photo opportunities of the Crater Lake. Scenic flights or helicopter rides over Tongariro National Park are available from Ohakune or near Whakapapa Village.
Two of New Zealand’s National Cycle Trails are also right here in the Ruapehu; Mountains to Sea and The Timber Trail. The one-day Timber Trail leg starts at Piropiro Flats and travels 44km through re-generating native forest, over New Zealand’s longest and highest swing-bridges following historic forestry tracks. The interpretive signage is worth stopping for. Book transport in advance and stay in Taumarunui. The Forgotten World Highway is another fantastic ride or scenic drive.
The three to five day Mountains to Sea cycle trail starts on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu and ends at the Tasman Sea in Whanganui. The route includes old coach roads, bridle trails, the indigenous forest of two National Parks, a jet boat transport option for the Whanganui River and a tranquil ride along the Whanganui River Road. Day ride options are supported from Raetihi, Ohakune or National Park Village returning each day to your preferred accommodation.

Art Deco Architecture: Hawke’s Bay’s place in history was cemented with a devastating 7.8 earthquake in 1931 that reduced the cities of Napier and Hastings to rubble. Both were rebuilt in the styles of the time: Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical. Today, a tour of Napier’s city streets is a must do for any visitor to see some of the finest examples of 1930’s architecture in the world. Explore the city by foot with a local Art Deco guide, ride around the city on vintage bicycles or explore further afield with a luxury Vintage car tour.

Cycling: Hawke’s Bay is home to over 200km of dedicated cycle trails, on and off-road, aptly named the Hawke’s Bay Trails. Incorporating three of the official New Zealand Cycle Trails –the Landscape, Water and Wineries Rides. The terrain is flat and riders will see everything from mountainous lookouts and beautiful lowland rivers to endangered wetland wildlife and the sweeping Hawke’s Bay coastline. There are plenty of cafes, wineries and scenic lookouts to stop on all three trails.
Easy Access: Hawke’s Bay is an easy drive through some of New Zealand’s most picturesque countryside. Visitors travelling by road from the north can choose either The Thermal Explorer Highway or Pacific Coast Highway. The road from the south is part of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail which stretches more than 300 kilometres from Hawke’s Bay through Wairarapa, Wellington and over Cook Strait to Marlborough in the South Island. Hawke’s Bay is well serviced by daily direct Air New Zealand flights from the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and a growing number of summer visitors arrive by cruise ship at the Port of Napier.
Wildlife: Visit the world’s largest accessible mainland Gannet Colony at the dramatic Cape Kidnappers between October and April where there are over 22,000 gannets nesting there. Options for getting there include travelling overland by 4WD through a working farm or along the beach on a family fun tractor and trailer ride.

landed and colonised here. Then, hundreds of years later, Captain Cook (on a journey of discovery) first set foot on NZ soil in Turanganui a Kiwa (Gisborne), in October 1769. A journey Out East requires a similar commitment. It’s not the easiest route and that’s what makes it a great journey. Rewards of unique people, space, freedom and some interesting ‘Coastal oddities’ await those who are keen enough to look around the next corner. State Highway 35 is one of the great coastal road journeys. Sometimes you will feel out of your comfort zone, other times right at home. Be sure to give yourself enough time and never be shy to say “kia ora!” to the locals, the magic of discovery will reward.

There is definitely something in the fertile soil - Out East. It leads to quality vineyards, fresh produce, groves of citrus and fields of dancing people, grassroots rugby, coastal communities, marae, smiley faces and quirky boutiques, a slower pace, rural farms and rural folk, magnificent trees, wilderness streams, rivers that turn and meander towards empty waves crashing on isolated beaches.

THE COROMANDEL
holiday destination and the relaxed region, located just over an hour from Auckland International Airport, is an ideal 3-4 day stop at the beginning or end of a New Zealand holiday. When you are on The Coromandel, you know you are on holiday! Hundreds of beaches, coves, islands and inlets are dotted around the 400kms of coastline, making it an ideal destination to slow down, discover and explore. A scenic boat trip exploring the islands and sea caves is definitely a must do as is wandering along one of the many coastal walkways like the popular walk into Cathedral Cove.

Discovered by the two great navigators Kupe and Cook, The Coromandel has a rich and colourful past. The area was founded on gold-mining, but is now a protected and sustainable region which revolves around eco-tourism tourism and you can still enjoy the same star studded sky these early navigators used to find their way here.

The inspiring landscapes have attracted many talented artists, whose colourful studios and potteries are dotted around the region. There is no better example

of how the arts, tourism and the environment intertwine than at Driving Creek Railway, where visitors travel on a one hour train ride through a working pottery and conservation estate. The Coromandel is blessed with an abundance of seafood and fresh local cuisine. Autumn, winter and spring are ideal times to explore The Coromandel Homegrown Food Trail and indulge in scallops, oysters, mussels, macadamias and plenty of other local produce.
Award winning restaurants can be found in many of the seaside villages. Local shoulder season festivals like Homegrown and the Scallop Festival are great times to visit to experience local culture at its best. Two unique thermal hot spring attractions are also highlights – Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own spa pool in the sand at low tide, and the thermal Lost Spring in the heart of Whitianga’s ocean village. The Coromandel is a walker’s paradise. Both guided and freedom walks explore the coastline and rainforests and feature the rich stories from The Coromandel’s Maori and pioneering heritage. The Coromandel Forest Park with its spectacular volcanic skyline, covers the backbone of the peninsula, and is criss-crossed with tracks allowing trampers to experience both the wildlife and the history of the area.
The Hauraki Rail Trail is one of the easiest riding trails in New Zealand. Perfect for those looking to enjoy our temperate climate and eager to indulge in The Coromandel’s homegrown cuisine. Cycle between heritage towns while sampling organic cheese and ice cream, wood fired pizza and boutique wine. Marvel at the wonder that is Karangahake Gorge, one of the “14 wonders of New Zealand” and the gold mining relics from yesteryear. The Hauraki Rail Trail, an experience that is good for your soul…
