Highway Information
The Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Eastland and Hawke’s Bay. Glittering white sand, crystal clear rolling surf beaches and beautiful harbours, the Pacific Coast Highway traverses the spectacular east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The Pacific Coast Highway is well signposted along the entire route, giving a safe and easy way to navigate through some of the most spectacular coastal scenery New Zealand has to offer. Travellers will be among the first people to see the sun as it rises majestically over the Pacific, casting its first rays over the stunning white sandy beaches, distinctive landscapes and off-shore islands.. Experience pure escapism! Sample the world’s best seafood, innovative cuisine and award winning wines and indulge yourself in one of the many luxurious accommodation establishments along the way. Enjoy the diverse and unique heritage within the region. You’ll discover the treasures of another era including Art Deco and colonial buildings, ancient Maori pa sites, relics of New Zealand’s gold-mining heritage and the living stories and faces of the local people. Marvel at the talents of the local artists and share with them the environment that so inspires them - the slice of the Pacific paradise that is the Pacific Coast Highway.
Ruapehu, Lake Taupo, Rotorua and Hamilton & Waikato. The Thermal Explorer Highway is well sign posted along the entire route through some of the most dramatic landscapes of the Central North Island. See a myriad of crystal clear lakes, the spiritual home of many key iwi (tribes) of Maori and experience nature’s awesome earth forces- bubbling mud pools, spouting geysers and natural geothermal mineral pools alongside the life and pastimes of the Maori. Travellers will have the opportunity to experience just about every adrenalin adventure you could want on air, land and water. An ancient underground labyrinth of limestone caves and grottos are a must do for those looking for natural wonders and unique adventure experiences. But if it’s the sedate life you are after, the Thermal Explorer Highway is also the perfect place to take it easy, with Middle-earth movie magic to discover, hot springs to relax in and local cafes to enjoy.
A must do extension of the Thermal Explorer Highway. Heading south, the eastern shores of Lake Taupo offer many opportunities to swim or picnic. Southwest of Turangi enter the Ruapehu region - home to a multitude of walks and hikes for all levels of fitness from a quick stroll to a full day. Visit the Tongariro National Park with its renowned Tongariro Alpine Crossing (full day walk) and the Whanganui National Park with breathtaking native bush, diverse birdlife and the rich history of the Whanganui River and Bridge to Nowhere. The area also boasts two NZ Cycle Trail Great Rides with the Timber Trail and Mountains to Sea as well as two NZ Great Walks in the Tongariro Northern Circuit and the Whanganui Journey. Spend a few days in National Park Village, Whakapapa Village or Ohakune, gateways to the Ruapehu region’s skiing, biking, walking and hiking, standup paddleboarding, river journeys, horse riding and much more. Complete the loop under the watchful eye of the region’s three volcanoes Mt Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe through to Waiouru and visit the National Army Museum to learn about New Zealand’s proud military history as you rejoin State Highway 1 and head north back to Turangi.

Driving in New Zealand is different to driving in other countries. Exploring our beautiful landscapes by car, campervan or motorhome is a popular way to get around. Even if people are used to driving in other places, they need to be well aware of things like weather extremes, narrow, windy roads and different road rules before they begin their journey.

Renowned for its natural beauty - misty rainforests and pristine golden beaches, The Coromandel is blessed with hundreds of natural hideaways, making it an ideal place to slow down, relax and unwind.
The Coromandel is where Kiwis go on holiday! It has long been New Zealand’s most popular coastal holiday destination and the relaxed region, located just over an hour from Auckland International Airport, is an ideal 3-4 day stop at the beginning or end of a New Zealand holiday. When you are on The Coromandel, you know you are on holiday! Hundreds of beaches, coves, islands and inlets are dotted around the 400kms of coastline, making it an ideal destination to slow down, discover and explore. A scenic boat trip exploring the islands and sea caves is definitely a must do as is wandering along one of the many coastal walkways like the popular walk into Cathedral Cove. Discovered by the two great navigators Kupe and Cook, The Coromandel has a rich and colourful past. The area was founded on gold-mining, but is now a protected and sustainable region which revolves around eco-tourism tourism and you can still enjoy the same star studded sky these early navigators used to find their way here. The inspiring landscapes have attracted many talented artists, whose colourful studios and potteries are dotted around the region. There is no better example of how the arts, tourism and the environment intertwine than at Driving Creek Railway, where visitors travel on a one hour train ride through a working pottery and conservation estate.

The Coromandel is blessed with an abundance of seafood and fresh local cuisine. Autumn, winter and spring are ideal times to explore The Coromandel homegrown food trail and indulge in scallops, oysters, mussels, macadamias and plenty of other local produce. Award winning restaurants can be found in many of the seaside villages. Local shoulder season festivals like Beach Hop and the Scallop Festival are great times to visit to experience local culture at its best. Two unique thermal hot spring attractions are also highlights – Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own spa pool in the sand at low tide, and the thermal Lost Spring in the heart of Whitianga. The Coromandel is a walker’s paradise. Both guided and freedom walks explore the coastline and rainforests and feature the rich stories from The Coromandel’s Maori and pioneering heritage. The Coromandel Forest Park with its spectacular volcanic skyline, covers the backbone of the peninsula, and is crisscrossed with tracks allowing trampers to experience both the wildlife and the history of the area.
The Hauraki Rail Trail is one of the easiest riding trails in New Zealand. Perfect for those looking to enjoy our temperate climate and eager to indulge in The Coromandel’s homegrown cuisine. Cycle between heritage towns while sampling organic cheese and ice cream, wood fired pizza and boutique wine. Marvel at the wonder that is Karangahake Gorge, one of the “14 wonders of New Zealand” and the gold mining relics from yesteryear. The Hauraki Rail Trail, an experience that is good for your soul…

It’s A Journey Of Discovery – Out East. Throughout history this region has attracted those seeking to discover. Explorers willing to leave the safety of their homes and harbours, to go the extra mile and reap unseen rewards.
The first Maori, great pacific seafarers, in their ocean going waka landed and colonised here. Then, hundreds of years later, Captain Cook (on a journey of discovery) first set foot on NZ soil in Turanganui a Kiwa (Gisborne), in October 1769. A journey Out East requires a similar commitment. It’s not the easiest route and that’s what makes it a great journey. Rewards of unique people, space, freedom and some interesting ‘Coastal oddities’ await those who are keen enough to look around the next corner. State Highway 35 is one of the great coastal road journeys. Sometimes you will feel out of your comfort zone, other times right at home. Be sure to give yourself enough time and never be shy to say “kia ora!” to the locals, the magic of discovery will reward.

All roads lead to Gisborne – Out East. The coastal city of Gisborne is like a beacon. Sitting proudly on the edge of the Poverty Bay flats and the Pacific Ocean, often glistening in the morning sun. Gisborne’s history, location and people make for a great destination to discover. There is definitely something in the fertile soil - Out East. It leads to quality vineyards, fresh produce, groves of citrus and fields of dancing people at outdoor concerts, grassroots rugby, coastal communities, marae, smiley faces and quirky boutiques, a slower pace, rural farms and rural folk, magnificent trees, wilderness streams, rivers that turn and meander towards empty waves crashing on isolated beaches.

Great food continues at the regions many cafes, restaurants and traditional Farmers Markets. Art Deco Architecture: Hawke’s Bay’s place in history was cemented with a devastating 7.8 earthquake in 1931 that reduced the cities of Napier and Hastings to rubble. Both were rebuilt in the styles of the time: Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical. Today, a tour of Napier’s city streets is a must do for any visitor to see some of the finest examples of 1930’s architecture in the world. Explore the city by foot with a local Art Deco guide, ride around the city on vintage bicycles or explore further afield with a luxury Vintage car tour.

The terrain is flat and riders will see everything from mountainous lookouts and beautiful lowland rivers to endangered wetland wildlife and the sweeping Hawke’s Bay coastline. There are plenty of cafes, wineries and scenic lookouts to stop on all three trails.
Easy Access: Hawke’s Bay is an easy drive through some of New Zealand’s most picturesque countryside. Visitors travelling by road from the north can choose either The Thermal Explorer Highway or Pacific Coast Highway. The road from the south is part of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail which stretches more than 300 kilometres from Hawke’s Bay through Wairarapa, Wellington and over Cook Strait to Marlborough in the South Island. Hawke’s Bay is well serviced by daily direct Air New Zealand flights from the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Jetstar operates daily from Auckland and growing number of summer visitors arrive by cruise ship at the Port of Napier.
Wildlife: Visit the world’s largest accessible mainland Gannet Colony at the dramatic Cape Kidnappers between October and April where there are over 22,000 gannets nesting there. Options for getting there include travelling overland by 4WD through a working farm or along the beach on a family fun tractor and trailer ride.

How about a 1-5 day paddle through the Whanganui National Park with Canoe Safaris? The 3-5 day trip covers 87km (more if you choose a 5 day trip), and can only accessed by river. The Whanganui River was, until recent times, the main route into New Zealand’s North Island interior. Used initially by the Maori and subsequently by European settlers, it has a fascinating and exciting history. Canoe Safaris have been running multi-day Canoe holidays on the Whanganui for over twenty five years and take great pride in the standard of their canoeing and camping equipment, and on their guides who will get you safely down the river, and then cook up a three course meal (with wine) in the evening.

The southern end of the lake features a collection of lakeside communities with a focus on water activities, and Turangi, a short 40 minute drive from Taupo, is located beside the Tongariro River, which is widely regarded as the premier trout fishing river in New Zealand, if not the world. Southern Lake Taupo is also famous for white water rafting, walking and mountain biking, and is a handy accommodation base for accessing the Tongariro National Park, where in summer hikers can trek the world famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and in winter can ski on the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu, the largest ski area in New Zealand, and an active volcano as well.
along the banks of Waikato River and Lake Maraetai. All three trails are suitable for walking and mountain biking. The closest town to the Timber Trail and Waikato River Trail is Mangakino, one of the North Island’s best kept secrets. The focus here is on outdoor activities - water sports including trout fishing, water skiing, wake boarding, mountain biking and hiking. Mangakino is a relaxed, laid back Kiwi holiday spot.
Did you know: You cannot buy Great Lake Taupo’s legendary trout. This region is one of the last true wild trout fisheries in the world. You won’t find trout in the menu in any local restaurants, as trout is neither farmed nor harvested. If you want one you have to catch one yourself. Fortunately, with the expertise of local guides, this is not too difficult. If you’d like it cooked to perfection, many of our local restaurants will prepare your catch for you!

New Zealand’s fourth largest city, Hamilton is the metropolitan hub for the region and is set on the banks of the mighty Waikato River. The city’s rich cultural mix and vibrant centre makes it a perfect place to experience the friendly kiwi lifestyle. Top restaurants and nightlife coupled with extensive shopping options, internationally acclaimed gardens and a leading arts sector complement the world-class events and visitor activities on offer.
Culture & Heritage: Home to the Maori King, the Hamilton & Waikato region has been a significant area for Maori for centuries, ever since the great voyaging Tainui waka (canoe) made landfall. Along with its proud Maori heritage, the region is also one of the country’s richest agricultural areas and is well-known as a centre for innovation and creativity across a wide range of industry and business sectors. Middle-earth Movie Magic: A slice of the ‘real Middle-earth’, as seen in the epic adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies, can be found amongst the lush countryside near Matamata and south of Waitomo. Visitors can walk in Peter Jackson’s footsteps and hear how movie magic was made on a guided tour through Hobbiton Movie Set.
Outdoor Exploits: The Hamilton & Waikato region boasts a wealth of forest reserves and ancient volcanic ranges that provide great opportunities for short walks, longer treks and cycle trails including three of New Zealand’s ‘Great Rides’. There is something for every traveller – from relaxing and rejuvenating in one of the region’s natural mineral spas to surfing on one of the world’s longest left hand surf breaks at Raglan. Visitors can take a scenic cruise on the Waikato River, or discover native wildlife and ancient forest at New Zealand’s most ambitious conservation project, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari or head to Ocean Beach in Kawhia to dig yourself a natural hot water spa right in the sand.

When scouting around for settings for his epic three movie adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Kiwi Director Peter Jackson found just what he was looking for in the green paddocks of the Waikato just outside Matamata. The bucolic setting for the Shire, home of the hobbits, including Bag End, was right there, and just waiting for his magical director’s touch. Whilst the cast and crew have gone, the visitor today can easily imagine hobbits going about their business. Visiting Matamata and the Hobbiton™ Movie Set is not just all about hobbits though.
