Historic Gloucester A fascinating journey of discovery into the past
WALLSWORTH HALL, NATURE IN ART
Gloucester combines its ancient origins and a rich historic past with a modern, bustling city. The heart of the City is home to excellent shopping centres, museums, wonderful restaurants and pubs. Nearby lies the beautiful Cathedral, with its ‘Great East Window’ and ‘The Cloisters’ - the most complete example in England. A short walk from the centre takes you to the famous Docks, with its Victorian warehouses, serving what was once the most inland port in Britain. The City Museum and Art Gallery’s fascinating displays are housed in a fine Victorian Building in the heart of the City, containing many items of national and international importance. Among the spectacular collection are archaeological finds, fine and decorative arts and natural history specimens representing Gloucester’s rich heritage.
larger than seems possible, and constantly surprising.
A visit to the museum will tell you so much about the early history of Gloucester. As well as fascinating Roman and Mediaeval displays there are dinosaurs, fossils, paintings, clocks, furniture, the stunning Birdlip Mirror and lots more.
Nature in Art is the world’s only museum dedicated to all kinds of art inspired by nature. Displays embrace two and three-dimensional work in all mediums and styles from across the world, spanning 1500 years. So typically, in addition to a temporary exhibition, you’ll see watercolour landscapes, contemporary glass, the Flemish masters, modern abstract interpretations, bronze sculpture and even some exotic oriental treasures. With all this variety you’re sure to find something appealing, and you’ll make some discoveries too!
Gloucester Folk Museum is one of the oldest-established museums dedicated to social history. The collections have been drawn together mainly through gifts from the entire county of Gloucestershire, and represent one of the most fascinating collections of such material.
At Nature in Art you have the opportunity to meet and talk to an artist whilst they demonstrate their skills. Artists from across the world work at the museum during all opening hours between February and November - so you may encounter painting or almost anything from woodcarving to textile art.
Set in Tudor timber-framed buildings, one of which was traditionally associated with the final night of the Protestant martyr, Bishop Hooper, the Folk Museum is a complex of rooms on different levels with a unique ambience that makes it a popular sight for locals and visitors. Behind the chocolate-box facade is a museum (with a garden to the rear) which is both
With various activities like brass-rubbing and an outdoor play area, there’s plenty for children to do. There’s also a tranquil sculpture garden to explore and a coffee shop serving homemade cakes. The museum also offers a variety of short art courses and other events throughout the year - contact them for details!

From Victorian heritage to locally grown organic food served up on a plate! In the heart of Gloucester you’ll find the historic docks, which in bygone years helped provide the region with food, fuel, textiles and building materials, as then it was the most inland port in England. Now it’s home to the National Waterways Museum and is the ideal place to discover what life was like living, working and moving on Britain’s inland waterways, from the 18th century to the present day, with plenty of hands on interactive fun for everyone. Four completely redesigned galleries tell the fascinating story of the waterways with lots to see and do for all the family, including the new ecology gallery. Boat trips are available along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and river Severn or relax in Coots Cafe Bar. The museum caters for groups of all sizes. Educational visits and hospitality packages are also available.
day out for the whole family. Children are well catered for as there’s lots of farm animals to look at and plenty of activities throughout the year. The farm is also ideally placed for trailer rides to watch the Severn Bore. For some time by the river there’s no better place than The Wharf House, conveniently located for both Cheltenham and Gloucester, opposite Telford’s bridge near the junction of the A40/A417, on the western edge of Gloucester. You can explore the riverside and the recently restored Canal Basin, learn all about the canal and the local area from the Civil War to today in the free visitor centre and replenish your energies with lunch or dinner from the a la carte menu or just a tea or coffee and cakes in the morning or afternoon if the weather is good you can even enjoy the locally sourced produce on the terrace overlooking the river, all in the satisfaction of knowing that all the profits go back to charity to maintain the canal.
On the A40 just outside Gloucester you’ll find Over Farm Market. The large farm shop sells a wide selection of fresh locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables, pickles and preserves. There is also a bakery, cheese counter and a meat counter. The shop also sells seasonal wares including Christmas trees. During the summer you can pick your own strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, so it’s also a great

Gloucester for great shopping! The main streets in the city centre are laid out in a cross, giving rise to Northgate, Eastgate, Southgate and Westgate Streets. This area is pedestrianised and makes the city centre both easy to navigate and very safe. Although there’s the usual high street stores and a selection of specialist shops, the city manages to retain some of its market town characteristics. Kings Walk Shopping Centre in the heart of Gloucester provides a huge variety of shops catering for many different types of customer, guaranteeing a great shopping experience. Throughout the year it’s a focal point for many different events in Gloucester, including the Christmas ice rink and various markets. On 21 May 2009 the much anticipated £400 million Gloucester Quays waterside retail and leisure development opens close to the historic centre of Gloucester. As well as a stunning new designer outlet centre with over 70 stores, the new development will include waterside bars and restaurants, maritime museum, marina, antiques centre, cinema, hotels and many other attractions opening throughout the year. It’s the perfect destination for a stylish shopping trip or a fabulous family day out. Lots of exciting activities are planned to celebrate, and include the Gloucester Tall Ships Festival (28 - 31 May 2009), firework display, fashion shows, marching band parade and lots more.
Two great historical pubs in the City centre offering a lot more than a pint! There are many places to relax and unwind but one of the best is a hidden gem - Café René. Located down one of the old alleyways of Greyfriars, this authentic watering hole offers a wide range of culinary delights including a Sunday Carvery, as well as a vast selection of ales, ciders and wine. There’s also free internet access so you can connect laptops. For a unique dining experience, the Old Bell Inn, one of the oldest pubs in Gloucester, is well worth a visit and features an amazing fireplace dating back to 1650. A Japanese menu is on offer for the more adventurous diner, or you can even cook steaks to your own personal liking at the table on a ‘Black Rock Grill’.

Leisure, entertainment and lots of fun! There is a wealth of things to see and do in Gloucester. GL1, Gloucester’s leisure centre provides an excellent range of leisure and sporting activities and its large hall also plays host to both sporting events and live entertainment. The leisure centre operates on a ‘pay and play’ basis and is open throughout the year. Feel like something more exhilarating? At one venue on Bristol Road you’ll find not one, but two adrenaline pumping experiences with either the thrills and spills at JDR Karting or entrance yourself in a game or two at Darklight Lasertag. After your action-packed fun and adventure, wind down and refresh yourself in the cafeteria, where you can even watch other drivers enjoying a few circuits of the track. The Gloucester Guildhall is a lively centre for entertainment, boasting two cinema screens, a concert hall, theatre, galleries, workshops and ‘The Place’ cafe-bar. So if it’s live music, comedy, theatre or dance that you’re looking for - look no further. Gloucester boasts one of the longest artificial ski slopes in the country. The Ski and Snowboard Centre at Robinswood Hill caters for all ages and standards. You can even go climbing at The Warehouse in Parliament Street. Developed as Britain’s premier rock climbing centre it provides a safety conscious experience for both novices and experienced climbers. Too energetic? How about a nice sedate cruise along the River Severn or Sharpness Canal or a trip to the multi-screen cinema. Gloucester offers something for everyone.

Deep level caving at Clearwell Caves When you visit Clearwell Caves you’re entering some of Britain’s oldest underground mine workings, dating back over 4,500 years. With nine impressive caverns to explore, the caves are both educational and fun for the whole family. As well as being a great visitor attraction, special deep level caving days are available throughout the year. ‘Explore Gloucestershire’ were lucky enough to experience this unique opportunity - read our review on the website at www.exploregloucestershire.co.uk.
The International Birds of Prey Centre near Newent has been taken in hand by its previous owner with a major refurbishment undertaken in preparation for this year. The fabulous collection of birds has returned from the USA and an enthusiastic and passionate team of staff have been recruited to ensure that this is a great place to visit, learn about and enjoy these great birds. For a great family day out in beautiful surroundings and the opportunity to see spectacular flying demonstrations, it’s a visit not to be missed. It’s also a great photography opportunity and courses with experts are also available. For a great present you can also book special experience days and get to handle the birds. In late summer 2008, the Forest Model Village just outside Lydney on the A48 was re-opened by its new owners and thousands of pounds have been spent making it a great place to enjoy the Forest of Dean in miniature.

Royal Forest of Dean n Located at the gateway to the south of the Royal Forest of Dean, is Littledean Jail, a former house of correction, courthouse and police station, now privately owned and is home to the infamous ‘Crime through Time’ collection. Once you enter the jail, through where the old court house once stood, you’ll come face to face with an extraordinary Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities. This eclectic private collection touches on a great many sad, disturbing, quirky and at times taboo subject matters - so be warned! It’s an intriguing collection which includes many rare and historically significant exhibit items including the hangman’s noose that was used on the man they couldn’t hang - John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. The skull remains of the last man in Britain to be gibbetted, then hung, drawn and quartered! As you wander through the jail you’ll find wall to wall galleries of authentic and vintage signed photographs and ephemera from some of the world’s most notorious villains and criminals, and iconic celebrity figures slated and brought to heal by the tabloid newspapers. There are strange looking creatures on show too, including the products of Victorian taxidermy that were exhibited in this era. They include a six-legged piglet, a kitten with five legs, a three-eyed puppy with two mouths, an eight-legged lamb with one head and four ears and a ten foot long maneating crocodile, and various other beasts of the jungle too. The Jail is also home to the largest single collection of Quadrophenia memorabilia in the world and includes the Vespa GS-Rally scooter that Sting (who played ‘Ace Face’) rode in the famous 1978 cult film, which was highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all times. We must stress that the Jail is NOT for the faint hearted, or for persons of a sensitive nature. Children are allowed in but should be kept under the strict supervision by their parents or guardians at all times. While you’re in Littledean why not pop into The Belfry Hotel where a warm ‘Forest’ welcome awaits you. The Belfry offers en-suite accommodation, good food served in the main bar or in the tastefully furnished restaurant. Traditional ales, lagers, ciders and full range of spirits and bottled beer are available, as are a children’s room, children’s play area, background music system and satellite television. Not far from Littldean at Newnham-on-Severn, located on the High Street, the Ship Inn is recognised by the locals of the Forest of Dean as one of the best places to eat in the area. The fine food and drinks are matched by superb accommodation with some of the rooms overlooking the river Severn - ideal for the Bore. To the rear of this 16th century coaching inn is a huge garden and courtyard - ideal for enjoying a drink and bite to eat on a summers day or night.

Explore the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham, famous for its fine Georgian architecture, tree-lined Promenade, speciality shops and internationally acclaimed festivals and events. The discovery of the Spa waters and the visit of George III in 1790 transformed Cheltenham into a fashionable place to be seen - a Regency hotspot! The heritage of those times left a huge impression on the town, still to be admired in the magnificent buildings of Montpellier and Pittville. Winner of countless ‘Britain in Bloom’ awards, the beautiful gardens and floral displays of Cheltenham, have led it to be described as ‘the Garden town of England’. Throughout the year Cheltenham plays host to some of the best festivals in the UK. It begins in Spring with the National Hunt Festival, always guaranteeing a wild time. Then there’s the Jazz, Science, Music and Literature events (see page 31). In the height of summer, Cheltenham College plays host to a selection of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s matches - this year Cheltenham entertains the counties of Derbyshire, Worcestershire, Essex, Northamptonshire and Durham - a true cricketing indulgence indeed! 26
Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum possesses an internationally significant collection relating to the Arts and Crafts Movement, recognised as outstanding by the award of Designated Museum status in 1998. Particularly strong in furniture, the collection also includes silver, textiles, ceramics and paintings, much of which was made by Cotswold craftsmen inspired by William Morris. Cheltenham is the most complete Regency town in Britain and the museum houses a wide range of objects associated with its history. There is also a gallery devoted to one of the town’s famous sons, Edward Wilson, who died with Captain Scott on their way back from the South Pole in 1912. Dutch and Flemish paintings, donated by the Baron de Ferrieres in 1898, are of particular interest. A fine collection of oriental ceramics has been assembled from the many pieces brought back to Cheltenham by retiring civil servants who had served in the Far East. There are additional displays of archaeological treasures from the Cotswolds and a series of historical galleries depicting life from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, as well as a programme of special exhibitions changing regularly throughout the year.

Each Festival boasts exciting, diverse and popular programmes which bring the biggest cultural names to town. This year look out for Nigel Kennedy, Madeleine Peyroux and Hugh Masekela at the Jazz Festival, special Guest Director Carol Vorderman at the Science Festival, unique world premieres at the Music Festival and the very brightest stars from the literati at the Literature Festival. The Cotswolds A fascinating region of the UK and an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ One of the most beautiful and captivating areas of England, known and loved by people across the world. An area of warmth and character, where Cotswold stone walls, buildings, open skies, rolling grasslands, beech woods and picturesque villages make it a spectacular English landscape - a landscape once experienced, never to be forgotten. There’s an abundance of attractions and activities to suit all ages, from child friendly farms and stunning country gardens to windsurfing, cycling and walking. 36
Until recently a trio of rhinos had been at the Cotswold Wildlife Park since l972; unfortunately now only ‘Somtuli’. the male (or ‘Bull’ as he is affectionately known by his keepers) survives. Plans are, however, underway to get him some company and a young male, ‘Monty’, from Knowlsey Safari Park, should be arriving by Easter 2009. Later in the year two young females are expected from an African reserve. The Madagascar enclosure opened last year and exhibits many species from the spectacular island - designed to immerse visitors in the fauna and wildlife of this unique Island and with many lemurs and birds roaming free, it’s a must see and do experience! The park also provides everything for a full family day out, and is home to a fascinating and varied collection of mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates from all over the world. There is a narrow gauge railway which the children love and a huge adventure playground for when the adults need a rest. A cafeteria provides both hot and cold food and refreshments, or spectacular gardens provide the perfect backdrop for a picnic. A large gift shop has something for everyone.

include Threads of Time - the Textile Treasures of Sudeley featuring re-discovered embroidery and textiles dating from the 17th century to the present day.
Within a short walking distance from Winchcombe you’ll find Sudeley Castle.
Sudeley boasts a fabulous children’s play area with wooden fort, slide and zip wire, set in a family picnic area.
Few historic houses can match Sudeley Castle’s long, curious and fascinating history. Spanning a thousand years the Castle has changed hands over a dozen times, has more than once been a Royal residence and has played host to at least six Kings and Queens of England. The Castle is perhaps best known as the former palace of Queen Katherine Parr, who is buried in St. Mary’s Church within the grounds.
Heading northwards from Winchcombe you’ll find the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway station at Toddington. Take a trip on one of the steam trains to Cheltenham station while taking in the breathtaking Cotswold views.
Today Sudeley is the home of Lord and Lady Ashcombe, Henry and Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst and their respective families. Sudeley’s award winning gardens are a delight throughout the seasons - from the Queens Garden, billowing with old fashioned roses, to the Elizabethan style Knot Garden. To mark the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s access to the throne, Sudeley is launching a new exhibition for 2009 detailing Henry and Anne Boleyn’s visit to the Castle in 1535. At this time the King conferred with his Cromwell at Winchcombe Abbey to launch the Dissolution of the Monasteries while Anne Boleyn investigated and exposed the fake holy relic at nearby Hailes Abbey.
