‘A fascinating journey of discovery into the past’

Gloucester combines its ancient origins and a rich historic past with a modern, bustling city. The heart of the City is home to excellent shopping centres, museums, wonderful restaurants and pubs. Nearby lies the beautiful Cathedral, with its ‘Great East Window’ and ‘The Cloisters’ - the most complete example in England, and also famously featured in the Harry Potter films. From 13-16 July 2011 Gloucester Cathedral will be filled with spectacular floral arrangements celebrating the famous people, products and events of Gloucestershire. A short walk from the centre takes you to the famous Docks, with its Victorian warehouses, serving what was once the most inland port in Britain. Over the past few years the Docks have been restored and redeveloped, giving the city of Gloucester a new dimension. This year the ‘Tall Ships Festival’ is returning to

the Docks, bringing a weekend of nautical fun and entertainment in the height of summer from 5 - 7 August. Full details are yet to be confirmed (at time of going to print March 2011), but from the previous festivals it’s guaranteed to be one of the highlights in the Gloucester events calendar in 2011. Other events at the Docks this year include a Water Festival, the colourful Dragon Boat Regatta, Yacht Regatta, Food Festival, spectacular fireworks display and a Victorian Christmas Market. An inspirational museum on the outskirts of Gloucester

Nature in Art is the world’s only museum dedicated to all kinds of art inspired by nature. Displays embrace two and three-dimensional work in all mediums and styles from across the world, spanning 1500 years. So typically, in addition to a temporary exhibition, you’ll see watercolour landscapes, contemporary glass, the Flemish masters, modern abstract interpretations, bronze sculpture and even some exotic oriental treasures. With all this variety you’re sure to find something appealing, and you’ll make some discoveries too!

The main streets in the city centre are laid out in a cross, giving rise to Northgate, Eastgate, Southgate and Westgate Streets. This area is pedestrianised and makes the city centre both easy to navigate and very safe. Although there are the usual high street stores and a selection of specialist shops, the city manages to retain some of its market town characteristics.

At Nature in Art you have the opportunity to meet and talk to an artist whilst they demonstrate their skills. Artists from across the world work at the museum during all opening hours between February and November - so you may encounter painting or almost anything from woodcarving to textile art. With various activities like brass-rubbing, an outdoor play area and art activity days during school holidays there’s plenty for children to do. There’s also a tranquil sculpture garden to explore and a coffee shop serving home-made cakes.

Nature in Art has a collection spanning 1500 years and from

over 50 countries, embracing two and three-dimensional work in all media and styles ranging from Pablo Picasso to David Shepherd. So whether you prefer exotic oriental treasures or watercolour landscapes, the Flemish masters or contemporary glass there will be something here for you... and you are likely to make some new discoveries too!

As well as regularly transforming our galleries with new displays from our own collection we organise a vibrant programme of special exhibitions. Meet an artist at work! For a unique dining experience The Tigers Eye Restaurant at the Old Bell is one of the most historic pubs in Gloucester and features an original Jacobean fireplace dating back to 1650. The fusion menu is on offer for the more adventurous diner, or alternatively you can cook steaks at your table on the shared dining experience that is the ‘Black Rock Grill’.

Café René - Lé Pub & Restaurant There are many places to relax and unwind but one of the best is a hidden gem - Cafe René located down on of the old lanes of Greyfriars. This authentic watering hole specialises as a Steakhouse Grill and with Sunday Roasts, fine wines, real ales and spirits - is definitely a place to visit when in Goucester. Café René also has free Wi-fi access, regular live music and the lively Cellar Bar.

Each year Café René hosts a week long Rhythm & Blues Festival where live music and entertainment is a plenty. The extraordinary fan-vaulted medieval cloisters and Great East Window are national treasures and the Lady Chapel houses some of the finest Arts & Crafts glass in the country. The tomb of Edward II became a place of pilgrimage in the 14th century and inspired the innovative cathedral building we treasure today. It is the only monarch’s tomb in the South West, one of only a few outside London and as such is of both historical and architectural significance.

At Café René we have a full and varied menu but pride ourselves on serving the finest expertly grilled prime steaks, from traditional cuts of Ribeye, Sirloin and Rump to our premium range of Fillet and T-Bone.

There is plenty for families to see and do, including the Whispering Gallery, the Giant Jigsaw and the Teddy Trail – not forgetting the chance to see where ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Dr. Who’ were filmed.

Enjoy fun on the farm, locally grown produce, festivals and a riverside restaurant serving up delicious food, beautiful views and rooms to stay. On the A40 just outside Gloucester you’ll find Over Farm Market. The large farm shop sells a wide selection of fresh locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables, pickles and preserves. There is also a bakery, cheese counter and a meat counter. The shop also sells seasonal wares including Christmas trees. During the summer you can pick your own strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, so it’s also a great day out for the whole family. Children are well catered for as there’s lots of farm animals to look at and plenty of activities throughout the year. From 8 - 11 July, Over Farm hosts its very own ‘Barn on the Farm’ Music Festival.

Here you can explore the riverside and the recently restored Canal Basin, learn all about the canal and the local area from the Civil War to today in the free visitor centre. You can then replenish your energies with lunch or dinner from the a la carte menu or just a tea or coffee and cakes in the morning or afternoon. If the weather is good you can even enjoy the locally sourced produce on the terrace overlooking the river, all in the satisfaction of knowing that all the profits go back to the charity maintaining the canal. The Wharf House also offers superb, luxurious accommodation. Each of the Seven bedrooms provide wonderful views of the River Severn, or the newly restored Canal Basin. All rooms have wide-screen TV’s, full data link-up, and private en suite facilities - some with whirl-pool baths!

In October school half term holidays watch out for spooky goings on with ‘Frightmare’ - a whole week of scary and fun antics for both children and adults. The farm is also ideally placed for trailer rides to watch the Severn Bore. For some time by the river there’s been no better place than The Wharf House, conveniently located for both Cheltenham and Gloucester. It lies opposite Telford’s Bridge near the junction of the A40/A417, on the western edge of Gloucester.

Your family’s ticket to a wild day out at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre Visit Slimbridge Wetland Centre to marvel at the world’s largest collection of swans, geese, ducks and flamingos. This beautiful visitor centre and internationally renowned Reserve welcomes visitors throughout the year with its seasonal programme of events from downy duckling days and Land Rovers safaris in the spring and summer to the breathtaking swan feeds in winter.

Out in the grounds hand feed tame geese from around the world, see a family of otters and an impressive collection of birds including the famous cranes. Grab a paddle and see wildlife on the kilometre long canoe safari, go pond dipping in pond zone, visit the many hides to see wildlife up close, or take the children to the popular outdoor wet playground: Welly Boot Land. Twice as much fun at one venue and a short walk from Gloucester Quays! JDR Karting was the first Karting centre in the UK to combine KARTING and LASERTAG under one roof. As a result they are able to offer hours of fun for children (aged 4 and over) to adults. The main track has a minimum age requirement of 12 years and offers many different sessions tailor-made for individuals, groups and corporate events. The track features high-speed banking corners and tarmac surface for exhilarating high-speed racing. There is ample viewing available which is free for spectators. Full training and equipment is included. There’s also a separate junior track for 4 - 11 year olds, which is great fun for birthday parties.

The lasertag arena has been uniquely designed just for the centre and uses the best equipment available. Darklight Lasertag can accommodate ages from children (6 years and over) to adults, and can have up to 34 players in the arena at any one time. Solo and team games are possible and score sheets are issued for every game. The phasers have an LCD display to give live information throughout the game and your position. The arena will be watching you, and various GEMS will shoot you if you do not get them first - so beware! No party would be complete without food so make use of the integrated cafe for all your catering needs. Ample free parking is provided and the Centre is located within walking distance of Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet.

The Forest of Dean The Forest of Dean is one of England’s few remaining ancient forests covering over 27,000 acres of woodland. Designated a National Forest Park in 1938, it is bordered by the River Severn and the River Wye, giving rise to its stunning landscapes and spectacular scenery. The seasonal changes showcase a vast array of flora and fauna with ever-changing colours. Bluebells in spring, lush green summers, spectacular autumns and the cool frosts of winter. With so much to see and do all year round, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. The Forest of Dean is well known for its abundance of activities and adventures. With such a diverse range there’s something for everybody including walking, fishing and cycling, caving, canoeing, kayaking and paintballing to name but a few. Jemima Parry-Jones and her fabulous birds of prey collection The International Centre for Birds of Prey (ICBP) near Newent was taken in hand by its previous owner, Jemima Parry-Jones in 2008. A major refurbishment since has returned the Centre to a beautiful place to visit with Jemima’s dedicated staff and wonderful collection of birds of prey. Great adventure in the Forest of Dean The Forest of Dean is just one big playground full of action and adventure for all to enjoy, from a gentle stroll through the many woodland walks or the more adrenlin-fueled activities such as kayaking the rapids and climbing at Symonds Yat, or mountain biking, canoeing and orienteering. All these can be experienced with two of the best; Forest Adventures and Way2Go Adventures both of which operate throughout the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley.

Indoor and outdoor fun on the farm Let the kids go wild in the country and burn off some energy at the Dick Whittington Farm Park. It’s an all weather, all year attraction with great indoor and outdoor facilities. Let them loose in the playbarn while you relax over a tea or coffee. There’s lots of play equipment for all ages up to ten with an array of ball pits and slides, and for the daring older children there’s also a drop slide. There’s a large café serving a wide selection of drinks and snacks and a gift shop. Outside there are lots of animals to feed and stroke, a pets corner and a reptile house full of creepy crawlies. During the summer take advantage of the extensive picnic area and play area. The outdoor pedal karts are also a big hit with the kids.

Magical Puzzlewood! What is the magic of Puzzlewood? Is it the maze of pathways winding between the moss covered rocks, the twisted roots of the Yew trees or the bridges and ‘lookouts’ you have to find on your way round? Puzzlewood is a unique and magical destination in the beautiful Forest of Dean. You can explore one mile of pathways winding through deep gulleys of moss covered rocks, over wooden bridges and through fantastic tree and rock formations, all set in 14 acres of ancient woodland. You will find Puzzlewood to be an enchanting place. It has an atmosphere quite unlike any other wood you have ever visited. Once in Puzzlewood you will imagine that you are in a fantasy film, and that fantastic creatures lurk round every corner. In fact Puzzlewood is used regularly as a location for the BBC1 production of ‘Merlin’ and ‘Dr Who’. JRR Tolkien is reputed to have taken his inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle Earth from Puzzlewood, and it is easy to see why. Puzzlewood has 3 cottages onsite as well as the lots of farm animals, a willow maze, an indoor maze, a children’s playground, plenty of picnic tables and a café and gift shop. BBC Television Programme: ‘Merlin’ is filmed in Puzzlewood.

Why not take a nostalgic steam train trip through the Forest of Dean? Pay once and explore all day - a fascinating day out for all the family. Dean Forest Railway hosts a varied selection of events including Bygone Branchline Days with vintage steam, diesel days, Forties Weekend, Halloween Ghost Trains, Santa Specials and the ever popular Day out with Thomas events. Thomas with perhaps Salty, Duck, Oliver and certainly Diesel, with Daisy the Railcar bringing the stories of Thomas and his Friends to life on this leafy railway. Treats like brake van rides, Thomas and Diesel having a race, rides on a miniature steam railway abound. Daisy chases the steam train. There are Punch and Judy shows, face-painting, and story telling in the Imagination Station with DVD screenings and table top toys. The shop is always chock full of Thomas themed toys, books and DVDs. Sir Topham Hatt, the Fat Controller, hopes to keep order during these full days of entertainment. Will Thomas run out of water? An exhaustive history of felony and misdemeanor in the Forest’s former prison! Located at the gateway to the south of the Royal Forest of Dean, is Littledean Jail, a former house of correction, courthouse and police station, now privately owned and is home to the infamous ‘Crime through Time’ collection. Once you enter the jail, through where the old court house once stood, you’ll come face to face with an extraordinary Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities. This eclectic private collection touches on a great many sad, disturbing, quirky and at times taboo subject matters - so be warned! It’s an intriguing collection which includes many rare and historically significant exhibit items including the hangman’s noose that was used on the man they couldn’t hang - John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. Also on display is the skull of the last man in Britain to be gibbeted, then hung, drawn and quartered! As you wander through the jail you’ll find wall to wall galleries of authentic and vintage signed photographs and ephemera from some of the world’s most notorious villains and criminals, and iconic celebrity figures slated and brought to heal by the tabloid newspapers. There are strange looking creatures on show too, including the products of Victorian taxidermy that were exhibited in this era. They include a six-legged piglet, a kitten with five legs, a three-eyed puppy with two mouths, an eight-legged lamb with one head and four ears and a ten foot long maneating crocodile, and various other beasts of the jungle too. The Jail is also home to the largest single collection of Quadrophenia memorabilia in the world and includes the Vespa GS-Rally scooter that Sting (who played ‘Ace Face’) rode in the famous 1978 cult film, which was highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all times. Released in 1979, Quadrophenia is still to this day highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all time, and has a massive cult following worldwide. This controversial film, when originally released was panned by critics for its sex, bad language, violence, profanity and drug use throughout the film, which at the time were fairly uncommon in film (unlike today’s Film and TV industry that seemingly appear to revel and rely upon using as much sex, violence, drug use and bad language). We must stress that the Jail is NOT for the faint hearted, persons of a sensitive nature or easily offended. Children are allowed in but should be kept under the strict supervision of their parents or guardians at all times. (Explore Gloucestershire)

May Bank Holiday sees the return of Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Guest Director Jamie Cullum. Jamie has invited some of his favourite acts to the festival including Mercury Prize nominated Kit Downes, soul-singer Andreya Triana and beautiful pop covers from Norwegian starlet Susanna. This year, the festival offers the perfect setting to celebrate the Royal Wedding with a whole day of ‘Best of British’ themed outdoor fun featuring a broadcast of the wedding itself. Free entertainment throughout the day and a very special Jazz Royalty edition of the BBC’s Friday Night is Music Night presented by Sir Michael Parkinson.

From 7-12 June, The Times Cheltenham Science Festival promises more eXplosive eXperiments than ever before as it celebrates its tenth year with the festival theme of ‘X’. The theme will inspire a programme of all things X-related - from X-rays to X-men and algebra, via a few X-rated issues.

In July, the Music Festival makes the most of its Cotswold setting. £3m refurbishment for the Everyman Theatre The Everyman is Gloucestershire’s finest theatre, presenting every kind of play and performance from ballet to opera, drama, dance, comedy, music events and the traditional family pantomime to community projects and education workshops open to all. The main auditorium is an architectural masterpiece designed by Frank Matcham and it will be restored to its former glory this year when it undergoes a £3 million restoration that will include updating all public areas, making visiting the Everyman a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. The theatre closes on 30th April and reopens on September 26th with The Madness of King George by Alan Bennett. The annual family friendly pantomime is always a big hit with young and old alike and this year Jack and The Beanstalk opens with a bang on Friday 25th November.

2 completely different family visitor attractions in Bourton-on-the-Water Birdland Park & Gardens is a natural setting of woodland, river and gardens, which is inhabited by over 500 birds, with the only group of King Penguins in England, Wales and Ireland. There are over 50 aviaries and a Desert House. You will also see a display of fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects. There is the Penguin Café serving home-cooked food, indoor and outdoor picnic areas, a playground and a gift shop.

Cotswold Motoring Museum, in the heart of Bourtonon-the-Water reflects motoring history over the years. The collection showcased represents a nostalgic journey through the 20th century; take a trip down memory lane when you view the museum’s vast collection of vehicles and enchanting toy collection as well as a fascinating selection of memorabilia, motoring curiosities and enamel signs! You can also say hello to TV’s Brum - the little super hero car, whose adventures start and finish at the museum, can be found here every day.

In 2010 the 2.5 acres ‘Marshmouth Nature Reserve’ was opened. Now more developed in its second year, there’s a maze of paths and copses with marshland and ponds and views over the Windrush River. It’s a wonderful chance to immerse yourself into a small area of the Cotswold countryside where you can see numerous species, as diverse as otters, dragonflies, kingfishers and many birds of prey.

For spring 2011, Birdland will have a new addition; ‘The Encounters Zone’. A purpose built presentation display area for hands-on activities and demonstrations including the popular ‘Bird of Prey Encounters’, ‘Reptile Awareness Days’ and ‘Meet a Keeper’. What’s going on at Chedworth Roman Villa? By Mark George (National Trust) With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund we are embarking on an exciting programme of redevelopment this year. Site access, interpretation and conservation are all being improved. This is a unique chance to see a building project, at a major archaeological site. However, car parking will be VERY limited so if you come, please try to car share (or better still get on your bike, or walk!). What will I be able to see at the Villa this year? • Discover a Roman water-shrine, under-floor heating and a Roman bath-house • Explore our temporary exhibition in the museum • Find out about life in 4th century Roman Britain • Join our site tour explaining the building works in progress What will I not be able to see this year? • Any of the mosaics in the west range • Any of the artefacts in the museum

Our project: “Chedworth Revealed” Why do we need the project? The fragile remains of the villa faced an uncertain future, with the existing shelters failing to adequately protect the mosaics. Our visitor facilities also failed to meet modern expectations with no permanent café, outdated interpretation and a small ‘shed’ used for our popular educational visits. Build a new conservation shelter over the west range to protect the house the mosaics are in, allowing you to get closer than ever before by walking on a suspended walkway. More mosaics exposed and on view for the first time since the Victorians discovered them.

Discover this unique 17th century grandstand situated on the picturesque Sherborne Park Estate in the Cotswolds. Built for the popular spectator sport of deer coursing, it was created by John ‘Crump’ Dutton who had a passion for gambling, banqueting and entertainment. Find out about the archaeological reconstruction project that the National Trust undertook to return the Lodge to its original layout. Climb up to the roof and enjoy the impressive views of the deer course and park, designed by Charles Bridgeman. Feel free to play around the vast green lawns, have a picnic or a cup of tea and an icecream from our tea-room.

The museum will be transformed to explain how the Victorians have shaped the site you see today. A dedicated learning facility will create a wonderful environment for people of all ages including our thousands of schools children who visit each year. Local community groups and families will be able to take part in more activities such as mosaic making and weaving, helping to bring the Villa to life for people of all ages.

The Bristol Aero Collection at Kemble celebrating over 100 years of our aviation heritage In 2010 the museum celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of The Bristol Aeroplane Company and the beginning of a century of aviation design and production. The company was founded by Sir George White, a Victorian entrepreneur, whose first venture into aeroplane manufacture sprang from his successful tramway and bus companies. The Bristol Aero Collection is dedicated to the preservation and display of products of the Bristol Aeroplane Company and its sister companies. On display at Kemble are examples of road transport, military and passenger aircraft, aero engines, missiles, spacecraft and many more items designed and built in Bristol. The museum is manned by enthusiastic volunteers and is housed in a WW2 hangar, easily accessible from the south entrance of Kemble airfield on the A429, just 5 miles south of Cirencester.

Catch a trout in Bibury! In the quintessential Cotswold village of Bibury, seven miles east of Cirencester is the Bibury Trout Farm. More than 150,000 people will be heading for the Cotswolds to enjoy many of the world’s most spectacular aircraft, including fast jets, giant transporters, classic warbirds, helicopters as well as aerobatics display teams including the legendary Red Arrows. Fun, fun and more fun on the farm Cotswold Farm Park, located near Guiting Power (which is about 5 miles north west of Winchcombe), is one of the best places in the Cotswolds to take children of all ages. Lions, giraffes and rhinos in a beautiful Cotswold setting Cotswold Wildlife Park is set within around 160 acres of beautifully landscaped parkland and gardens. There are many exciting animals to be seen as you walk around the Park, visiting the Reptile House, Invertebrate House, Bat exhibit and farm barn as you go. The ‘Walled Garden’, once the kitchen garden for the Manor House, has been transformed with displays of exotic plants, tender perennials and is the perfect setting for tropical birds, penguins and smaller mammals, including the popular meerkats. English history and royal splendour in the Cotswolds Award winning gardens and medieval ruins surround Sudeley Castle, which sits nestled in the Cotswold Hills on the edge of the historic town of Winchcombe. Sudeley has played host to many royal figures throughout history and was famously the former home of Katherine Parr, who is buried in St Mary’s Chapel within the grounds. The Castle has also been visited by Queen Elizabeth I, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Besieged by Cromwell’s troops, Sudeley was restored in the 19th century by the Dent brothers with their fortunes from the glove trade. Today Sudeley is the home of Lord and Lady Ashcombe, Henry and Mollie DentBrocklehurst and their respective families. The extensive gardens have been lovingly restored and designed to reflect the Castle’s fascinating past. The Queens Garden is amongst the finest rose gardens in England and sits on the original Tudor Parterre. Sudeley has welcomed Sir Roddy Llewellyn as Garden Design Consultant for 2011 and this summer will see the launch of a new Herbal Healing Garden. Fascinating exhibitions explore Sudeley’s history and also new for 2011 is the story of ‘Brock The Badger’ once the family pet to the Dent-Brocklehurst family. Tours of the family’s private apartments are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only. Sudeley boasts a fabulous children’s play area with wooden fort, slide and zip wire, set in a family picnic area. Journey into a world of trees at Westonbirt Arboretum Great reasons to visit in 2011 Westonbirt, The National Arboretum in Gloucestershire is internationally known for its vibrant autumn colour; but have you thought of the many other opportunities Westonbirt offers for other times of the year? The event will include big wood carving amongst many other new attractions to celebrate UN International Year of Forests. This year, Tree Aid are taking a step back from the Festival of the Tree to focus on their other fundraising ventures, so the event’s main beneficiary will be Westonbirt’s own charity, the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum.
