TIPS & INFORMATION
The River Region welcomes military families. Montgomery Museum & Maxwell Air Force Base
Just a few years after the “fathers of flight,” brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright accomplished man’s first powered flight, they came to Montgomery and founded the first civilian flying school in the country. The school didn’t operate for long, yet it opened the door for events that would lead to Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base locating in the capital city, interestingly enough, on the same site as the flying school.

Today, the 42nd Air Base Wing is the host unit for Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, and its mission is critical to national security. It provides the foundation for success for Air University, the leadership center of the Air Force; the 908th Airlift Wing; the
754th Electronic Systems Group; and more than 30 tenant units. Air University plays a major role in the Air Force, as it continues to educate tomorrow’s planners and leaders in air, space and cyberspace power for the Air Force, as well as, other branches of the U.S. armed forces, federal government civilians and international organizations.
