Greetings Cocoa Beach Residents:
Well, spring is upon us! So wonderful to hear the birds chirping and the flowers blooming. This month’s reads are pretty diverse and not my usual curl up on the coach books. My three recommendations this month are a modern-day horror story, a heartfelt memoir where nature, science, and human emotions come together, and a return to the moon by some old favorites.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This horror novel set in Mexico takes the reader on a journey from Mexico City to the countryside home of an Englishman who married the protagonist Noemi’s cousin. Noemi, whose only concerns are what to wear to the next party, is summoned to her cousin’s side in the country for what she thinks is just a brief cheering up. However, what she uncovers about the family, the house, and her fate grips the reader until the end.
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren
Don’t turn your back on science! This incredible memoir documents a female scientist’s journey into geobotany (the study of trees, plants, seeds, and soil). The story follows her career in academia and research through opening three labs across the United States while forging a lifetime friendship, finding love, and raising a family.
Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America’s Race to the Moon by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton
This non-fiction account from first-hand knowledge reminds us of where we started and how far we have come today in our space endeavors to continue our ride into space. Get the raw words from the people who experienced landing on the moon and those standing by on earth. Learn about or refresh your memory about the moon shot years of space.
Stay tuned next month for another review of a local author’s book and check my blog for what I am reading, and a complete list of all the space books we have read so far! https://cod-caterpillar-mb4b.squarespace.com/work/studio-vega-hpj8c password: cocoabeach2021
