Explore Ouranoupoli's Tower and Zygou Monastery Ouranoupoli, the city-gate to the Monastic State of Athos If you want to visit Ouranoupoli and learn about the culture and history come and walk with us. Discuss with our guide about the area, all in a nice leisure walk in the village. Taking a morning break off the beautiful coast, would be ideal to have an archaeological walk to Ouranoupoli, the last secular destination before entering the avaton of Mount Athos. The Byzantine Tower of Prosforio, the largest and most well preserved Mount Athos, is located 2km from Ouranoupoli, on the border line to the Monastic State. It was founded in the 10th century, destroyed at the end of the 12th century and it is the unique monastery outside the avaton territory. Nowadays, Moni Zygou is a beautiful archaeological site under restoration, where the visitor can obtain a clear idea of how a Byzantine monastery used to be.
