FINDING MAGIC
IN THE JUNGLE A ST U D E N T AM B AS SAD O R STORY
This year, we followed three rockstar students on their international tours as part of our Explorica Student Ambassador program. Our student ambassadors documented and shared their Explorica travel experiences and had the chance to reflect on their journeys after they returned home.
TKay is a 12th-grade student ambassador from New York City who discovered her Explorica trip through Kids N Culture, a non-profit academic enrichment program for high school students. When asked why she wanted to travel, she said, “I feel like it’s the best way to acquire knowledge and experience new things that I may not have the luxury to experience otherwise. I think seeing the world and venturing outside of our little bubble is a catalyst for growth. This is because we only see the small parts of the world that we have around us and we’re limited to what our communities have to offer.”
Throughout her trip, TKay and her peers hiked in the Amazon jungle, went white water rafting in the Napo River, and more — activities that she found impossible to share with the outside world. “I used to obsess over the idea of being ‘trendy’ or finding the perfect photo to post online. Realizing how shallow and superficial that was, I learned so much more from doing it in real life without the intention of finding the perfect photo.” Instead of sharing flawlessly captured pictures on social media, TKay and her peers had authentic conversations about life, the world, and the beauty of human connection.
A few months before her tour, TKay received a small travel journal with an inscription on the front cover that read “In the midst of our lives, we must find the magic that makes our soul soar.” From that moment on, TKay was determined to find the magical experience that would change her life. Little did she know it would be found in Ecuador!
Day after day, TKay wrote in her journal to capture her experience of living in the middle of the jungle. The quiet sounds of nature instead of honking cars provided the background that led her to self-discovery. “I realized that ‘magic’ can only be found when life has the chance to display the endless opportunities of connecting with the deeper world around us.”
“With the demand to disconnect from my phone and take in such an exciting experience, on the very first day, I had already learned so much about life in Ecuador — which is far different than life in the United States,” TKay noted.
“I was inspired by my friends and got a chance to grow with them in such an incredible way. I learned that being truly present and overcoming fears are steps that I could take to find that magic in me.”

S/he’ll guide us throughout the trip, making sure we’re having fun and (verb) along the way.
5. MEET YOUR TOUR DIRECTOR
Q: What is one thing you absolutely cannot travel without? A: My portable battery charger! For a tour director, running out of your phone battery is just not an option. I’m still haunted by my camera running out of battery just as I was about to take a brilliant photo of a lion in South Africa. Q: What’s the longest you’ve been away from home? A: I think my longest travel experience was about 4 months of traveling around southeast Asia in the 90s. Q: Where is your favorite place in the world? A: My favorite place that I’ve ever visited is the Galapagos Islands. The wildlife was simply amazing. I also love London, which is where I live! It’s such a diverse, vibrant city, and there’s always something to do here — plus, many of the museums are free. Q: What’s the best piece of travel advice you’ve ever received? A: Hmm...the best advice I’ve been given is to always bring a supply of baby wipes. They’re indispensable when traveling, especially on a night train.
EXPERIENCE JANE'S
FAVORITE TOUR Check out London, Paris & Italy. 7 cities. 3 countries. 10 days. 1 amazing tour. explorica.com/LPR
Q: What have you learned about yourself through travel that surprised you? A: I like to step out of my comfort zone when traveling — I learned that this year on a 3-week road trip through Namibia with my family. I was also surprised that I didn’t miss being able to access the internet for days at a time...unlike my daughter, who was counting the days until we had Wi-Fi again.
Q: Who is your dream travel companion? A: My dream travel companion is my friend, Anne, because she always lets me set the itinerary and do all the research. She’s happy to just go along with whatever I plan! Years ago, we had a 2-month adventure traveling by train around India and Nepal, and just last year we went to Seville where we tried every single type of tapas. Q: What’s your favorite dish from around the world? A: Kung Pao chicken, which was my go-to when I led tours around China. And when I’m in Italy, I get excited at the sight of Buffalo mozzarella — it’s not so common here in the UK. Q: Do you notice a difference between young travelers and older tourists? A: Younger travelers tend to take a lot more selfies than older travelers! But I do think traveling at any age can open someone’s eyes to the diverse cultures around them, and that’s an experience you can’t get any other way. Q: What was the best trip you’ve taken with an Explorica tour group? A: My favorite tour is always London, Paris & Italy because the students get to see so many of the major sights in Europe — and three very different cultures — in such a short time. I have fond memories of one tour in particular, with a fantastic Program Leader and a group of kids from California. Q: Window or aisle seat? A: Aisle, because I hate having to bother people when I want to get out of my seat.
1 0 QUESTIO NS WITH A TOU R DI RE CTOR An Explorica tour director since 2004, Jane Davies has lived in Amsterdam, Boston, and now London, where she brings European destinations to life for students and teachers. She studied French and German in school and enjoys traveling and hiking with her two children. When she’s not creating engaging educational moments on tour, Jane can be found going to the theater, taking her daughter to soccer practice, and looking after her family’s guinea pigs.
SOLVE THE RIDDLE! You have me today, and tomorrow you’ll have more. As your time passes, I’m not easy to store. I don’t take up space, but I’m only in one place. I am what you saw, but not what you see. What am I? Grace and Alison, two members of the Explorica family, on a teacher
