6: BEST OF THE FEST We round up some of the highlights from this year’s Fringe.

10: A-Z A selection of the finest acts playing this year’s Fringe helpfully listed in alphabetical order. We’re nice like that.

Welcome to The Fringe It’s set to be another bonanza year at The Tramlines Festival with some of the biggest acts to have ever graced the event hitting the main stages during the weekend of July 21-23. But there’s even bigger news afoot, for this year, The Fringe has its own OFFICIAL PROGRAMME. And yes, this it. And there’s good reason, we’ve so much going on in and around Sheffield city centre this year that when you want to get away from the main arenas, there’s still plenty to keep you dancing.

40: DOPED UP “We’re not all taking drugs… for us, drugs stands for trash TV, trash food, trash everything – that stuff that distracts you from what’s really going on.” Allusondrugs on their Crystal Stage set.

47: FRINGE LISTINGS If it ain’t in here, it ain’t part of the Official Fringe. So plan your weekend to the millisecond and then just stay in the same pub all day because you’ve got good seats.

Highlights include CODE WAREHOUSE’s massive outdoor rave featuring Hot Since 82, Solardo, wAFF and Jhonsson. The location is top secret but keep your eyes on CODE and Exposed Magazine’s social media feeds and all will be revealed. Other stand out events include the Kabal all-dayer outside Plug on Saturday that is a mainstay of the festival; inside on Friday it’s live bands all day and then an almighty Propaganda sesh in the evening. We also like the look of the Crystal stage line up again this year: Sunday looks especially awesome with Faerground Accidents rounding things off at 10pm.

72: VENUE GUIDE A quick who’s who of this year’s Fringe venues.

Make sure you can navigate your way around The Fringe with ease.

For those who like a more refined Tramlines experience, there’s the jazz Stage at Leopold Square which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1pm-9pm and features the likes of Nicola Farnon, Dizzy Club and Papa Soul. Meanwhile, Orchard Square (just over the road) is eschewing live music altogether for a pop up street food event and big screen showing of Grease on Saturday evening. “Wella Wella Wella Huh,” indeed!

Elsewhere, the ever-changing Moor area of Sheffield is turning itself into a double headed monster for the weekend. They’ve two stages this year you see, showcasing talent from across the country in what is sure to be one of the city’s hotspots. Everly Pregnant Bros are back at The Fat Cat for their regular Tramlines special alongside a line-up that includes Emily Jane Stancer while the Reverend himself, Jon McClure will round off Sunday at Soyo with a DJ set. Hell, even snooker ledge Steve Davis is DJing at The Picture House Social on Friday at 11pm. And with a packed weekend of live music action from places as diverse as Tiger Works, Shakespeares, Record Junkee and Head of Steam, and acts such as Caroline Francess, Kong and Dave Woodcock & The Dead Comedians all on the bill, there really is something for everyone at The Fringe this year. Don’t forget you can keep in touch with what’s going on at the main festival with all of Tramlines social media channels, while Exposed Magazine will be keeping you up to date with all things Fringe. The Tramlines Times, the festival’s daily newspaper comes out each morning too and will have all the latest reviews, news, interviews and updates and also makes a rather handy protective hat should it start to rain. See you on the other side, people.

SAFETY MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL ORGANISERS Stay safe over Tramlines weekend. Remember that road closures through the city centre are only in place whilst the stages are on. Stay alert and off the roads if there is vehicle movement and keep clear of the trams. Tramlines weekend is one hell of a party, but remember to pace yourselves. It's a long one.

BEST OF THE FEST

LEOPOLD SQUARE

The Fringe at Tramlines is a many splintered thing with all manner of undiscovered and breaking bands, as well as off-the-wall activities popping up all over the place. So whether you’d rather check out a breakthrough act in a dingy back street boozer or chill out in a city centre square and watch your favourite musical on the big screen, we take a look at some of the highlights from this year’s Fringe, to make sure you don’t miss that must-see event.

This sophisticated leisure spot will be playing it’s part in giving Tramlines a more cultured edge, featuring several highly-rated musicians with a vast diversity of sounds. Jazz, soul, swing and funk will fill the square, bringing a rhythm to this venue with its impressive architecture and desirable alfresco dining. Crowds will almost be able to convince themselves they’re on holiday, enjoying a little local music in this beguiling oasis.  LEOPOLD SQUARE// FRIDAY - SUNDAY // 1.30PM - 9:00PM

Members of the public, bands and musicians can drop by for advice on music funding and how to pursue a career in the industry. With tips from experts up-for-grabs, this is the ultimate free event to help celebrate the music industry and all the opportunities it affords. On the day, representatives from the PRS Foundation, Momentum Artist, DIY magazine, the Arts Council England, Adapter Management, PPL, and Aggressive Management will be available for a chat.  THE FOUNDRY // SATURDAY // 12:00-4:00PM

KABAL ALL-DAYER AT PLUG

POP-UP CINEMA AT ORCHARD SQUARE

Tramlines at Plug is jam-packed full of live gigs and after parties, but one of the hottest tickets this year is their Kabal All-Dayer. This outdoor street rave takes place in the Plug car park, featuring quality music from a whole heap of up-and-coming DJs and some of the best street food around. It’s been one of Plug’s staple Tramlines events for a number of years – and well worth checking out in 2017.  PLUG // SATURDAY // 12:00PM

TRAMLINES FRINGE ON THE MOOR

It’s safe to say that The Moor has seen a major transformation this year. 2016/17 has seen the district receive an impressive face-lift, and it seems to be working and footfall has already increased dramatically. For Tramlines, they’ll be welcoming two stages for a string of live performances as part of the music weekender. One will stand outside Debenhams, with the other a little further down just outside the Moor Market. The idea is to give fresh talent a platform (quite literally), to showcase Sheffield’s burgeoning music scene. From acoustic performances to soul, a bit of electro funk to folk and rap, The Moor promises to deliver a little something for everyone this year.  THE MOOR // ALL WEEKEND 6 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Orchard Square, one of Sheffield’s most popular retail outlets, will be celebrating this year’s Tramlines Fringe fest with a pop-up cinema experience. Alongside the 24ft screen, there’ll be indulgent street food, a bar, deckchairs, and the showing of an iconic Hollywood classic: Grease. The event starts at 8.30pm on Saturday, with the film starting at 9.45pm tickets are £5; this one’s not to be missed.  ORCHARD SQUARE // SATURDAY // 8.30PM

CODE’S SECRET LOCATION

CODE WAREHOUSE, one of the city’s best known nightclubs, is keeping its cards close to its chest this year with a secret location for its huge outdoor rave. Muzik – the brains responsible for bringing some of the best underground artists to the Steel City – will be presenting Twister Wonderland on Saturday. Tickets are available on Skiddle.com, and the crowd can look forward to performances from Hot Since 82, Solardo, wAFF, and Jhonsson.  LOCATION TBC

THE HALLAM SHUTTLE

You’ll have known this in the past as the Busker’s Bus, now resurfacing at Tramlines under new alias The Hallam Shuttle, and it’s going to offer a glorified sing-along to make travelling between the Tramlines stages way more fun. On Saturday and Sunday, it will be running between the Main Stage in Ponderosa Park and The Folk Forest at Endcliffe Park. Organised by Sheffield Hallam students, those on board can enjoy performances from a range of artists, and all of this for free, just by flashing their Tramlines wristband.  BETWEEN THE MAIN STAGES // ALL WEEKEND

Howarth

THE DIZZY CLUB

A well-known face on the Sheffield music scene due to previous exploits with the likes of The Search Party (later known as Silents) and a lengthy stint flying solo, Howarth tells us a bit about getting back into this band malarkey. After spending a long time plying your trade as a solo artist, what made you decide to get a band together? I've been playing solo for a long time, but don't see MARY WROTE as an extension of that. We’re a band, it's not ‘Howarth and The Show’. Having all been in bands previously we have some great experience and can influence each other in the writing process. You’ve been proper little teases and released a 30 second clip of the demo for your first track. When can we expect the full shebang? Yeah, we threw out a little teaser and a couple of videos of our track, ‘JUNIPER’. This was us trying to see how other people felt about our sound, and the feedback has been great so far. As for the full shebang, we're unsure but we're recording things all the time. I suppose people will have to revert to the old fashioned way of hearing a band – actually going to gigs! Tramlines. What’s the craic with you guys? We’ll be playing at The Rocking Chair on Friday and The Frog and Parrot on Saturday – great venues and we’re happy to be playing both.  THE ROCKING CHAIR // FRIDAY // THE FROG AND PARROT // SATURDAY

This jazz quartet thrives on diversity, switching things up with young audiences and jazz crowds, with a sound ranging from 40s swing to soul to Sinatra, often with Latin undertones that's guaranteed to have audiences dancing along. KONG

All has been a bit quiet in the land of KONG recently. What have you been up to, lads? A lot of time has been spent writing and deciding which road is the best for us to go down next. We have a couple of fresh songs recorded and even more in the pipeline, so it’s not too quiet in reality for us. Just to add to that, expect a little more than just the music for the new song too. What sort of vibe have you gone for on the next single? It’s a little different from the last couple of EP’s, with a slightly heavier sound but keeping that indie-punk side of the band well within sight. It’s a little more aggressive and in your face. Tramlines, baby. Just how much does KONG love Tramlines? What can we say? It’s our third year playing this festival and we’re just as excited as the first time. It’s going to be our second time playing the Crystal Stage, and the line-up is somehow even better than last year! With bands like October Drift, Cellar Door Moon Crow and SHEAFS all playing the same stage, we feel very privileged to get the opportunity and can’t wait for the whole weekend.  CRYSTAL STAGE // SATURDAY // 12.50

With a couple of weeks to go until Tramlines weekend kicked off, we got guitarist Drey Pavlovic on the blower to talk about their upcoming tour, small-town origins and latest musical experiments.

Words: Molly Kerkham

Let’s start at the beginning. What made you fall in love with music? It was my dad. He always had guitars, was always in bands. He got me my first Walkman, which was full of U2 songs. I used to listen to it with one ear bud in my ear, the other one in my brother’s. So I always had access to my dad as a musician, and the same actually applies to Jason, our singer.

“HALF OF THEM LOVE IT, HALF OF THEM HATE IT. IT’S LIKE MARMITE” What bands inspired or influenced Allusondrugs? Oasis, Blur, Simply Red, Nirvana, Deftones, and many, many others. Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, too. It’s all the good stuff, basically! You’re often labelled as grunge or shoegaze. Do you think that’s true? Yeah, a lot of our earlier stuff was grungy. Our new stuff is a bit different, though. I wouldn’t say it’s more commercial, but it’s got elements that we haven’t previously explored before – like dubstep!

THANKS TO THEIR DISTINCTIVE BLEND OF GRUNGE AND PSYCHEDELIC ROCK MATCHED WITH FRENETIC, UNPREDICTABLE LIVE PERFORMANCES, ALLUSONDRUGS ARE GUARANTEED TO BRING THE RAUCOUS TO THE CRYSTAL STAGE THIS YEAR.

Allusondrugs have just started a tour of the UK. What are you most looking forward to? We really can’t wait for Scotland, as we’ve always had fun there. We’ve booked another gig at The Horn in St Albans, which is probably our favourite venue. It’s a really good size, with a great stage and an ace takeaway around the corner.

You know Sheff pretty well, having played Tramlines weekend on a number of occasions. Are you looking forward to getting back onstage here soon? Sheffield is awesome. And yeah, we’ve played here loads over the years, as it’s just down the road from us in Leeds. We’re playing at the Tramlines Crystal Stage, the free stage where we played last year. We rate Sheffield’s indie scene and there are lots of great food places – I’m sure we’ll find somewhere that’ll serve us a weird burger. Tell us about the name Allusondrugs. It’s not that we’re all taking drugs, saying come to our shows and we’ll do crazy stuff on stage together. For us, “drugs” stands for all that stuff – trash TV, trash food, trash everything – that distracts you from what’s really going on. The public have always been misled, and definitely more so now. The name started out as a joke, but now we’re stuck with it. It stopped certain radio stations from playing us, so I always ask people what they think of it. Half of them love it, half of them hate it. It’s like Marmite – but I guess Marmite’s really successful in its own right.

So, you’re more for getting out and touring as opposed to focusing more on the online side of band promotion? The internet has ruined pretty much everything over time, because it’s all about making money. When we started out, anyone who liked our Facebook page would see our posts. You now have to pay for that. I’d say it makes things harder for smaller bands, as you’re competing with big bands with bigger budgets. Maybe in the future we’ll see more physical promotion again, as people get bored of the internet – just like the rise of vinyl. What’s next for Allusondrugs? Over the next few months you can expect plenty of gigs and new music too. We’re not sure if it’ll be an album or an EP, but we’ll definitely be releasing new something this year. Long term, we’re aiming high and not ruling anything out; we’d love to play all over the world. Allusondrugs play Aggressive Management’s Crystal Stage SATURDAY // 15:20

True that. You come from Castleford, a small town outside of Leeds. Do you think that this made it harder to get started as a band? No, I think it worked in our favour. We usually say we’re from Leeds, but we built up a good following in Castleford. We played gigs at a pub for a year in exchange for the owner buying us a van, and that helped us get our name out there. Do you have any advice for new bands starting out in small towns? You’ve got to cut through the noise, so you’ll need a lot of practice, a lot of gigs and something that makes you stand out. It’s difficult because of the cost of living, which means that many people have to work full-time and can’t be a touring band. We spent a year gigging for free, and emailing everyone we knew for promotion and gigs. Eventually, it’s paid off.

FAT CAT

The tap pub for Kelham Island Brewery, The Fat Cat has featured many legendary performances over the years at Tramlines, often on their rooftop. And with the area booming of late, we’re expecting their shows to be among the hottest tickets this year. With weekly events keeping entertainment levels to the rafters, and their 35th birthday coming up in August, it makes sense that Tramlines will be bringing fresh, live music to Fat Cat.

Not only does this place share its name with a famous book, it also shares a love of quality live music with its punters. It offers a little of everything; a nice quiet drink, a weekend party sesh, a Mexican street food hotspot, an outdoor suntrap and just an all-round ideal place to hang out in the heart of the city.

From the grandiose look of the building’s exterior, you could be mistaken for thinking you've got the wrong address for a Tramlines gig, but inside, the tables and benches and cool, earthy décor makes Head of Steam the ideal place for an indoor festival. It’s in the heart of the city, a few minutes’ walk from the nearest transport links, serving up quality food and a sumptuous selection of craft beer and real ale.

THE HUBS

The HUBS on Paternoster Row, home to the Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union, recently launched a brand new programme of events in a bid to establish the venue as a popular events space – for both students and locals alike. Boasting a 350-capacity room (150 for seated gigs) and an industry standard PA system a, the venue aims to serve as something of a middle ground between the smaller and larger capacity venues.

Maida Vale is known for its infectious atmosphere, 2-for-1 cocktails and its range of live music events, thrusting the spotlight on local talent. During recent Bank Holiday events, Jungle Lion, Papa Soul and The Modfellas took to the stage, and it’s likely to be on most people’s agenda this Tramlines weekend.

The Moor is one of Sheffield’s major shopping hubs, and has recently undergone a massive revamp to give it a more modern, upmarket look. Since the transformation, more and more high street favourites have relocated, meaning that footfall on The Moor has started to swell. Deichmann, TJ Hughes and The Light Cinema are already in place while the Gourmet Burger Kitchen, H&M, Zizzi’s Italian and Nandos are on the way. This year at Tramlines, they have two stages featuring a range of artists.

This thriving pub reopened in 2011 after being revamped by avid music fan, William Wagstaff, and went on to win CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2013. Since then, music has been at the heart of the place. Local up-and-coming performers regularly play upstairs in the Bards Bar, and down in the pub itself, visitors can enjoy local beers to the sound of a little folk music. It promises to fit right in as a venue for the Tramlines Festival, with a friendly atmosphere and a love of music already imprinted on the fabric of the building.
