Tramlines Gets Exposed!
Over the years, we’ve been able to tick plenty off the Exposed Mag bucket list. We’ve jabbered with Jarvis, supped with Hawley, cooked on Masterchef, and even given our Ed a colonic. We still chuckle about that one. But, right up at the top, just above bungee-jumping with Sean Bean (see next issue, maybe), we’ve always dreamed of an Exposed Magazine Tramlines Stage. Well, we’ve only gone and done it! This year’s Tramlines Festival will welcome the addition of the Exposed In Session Stage to Devonshire Green – which between 1-8pm Saturday and 2-8pm Sunday will be showcasing some of the very best local talent from our musical shores, plenty of which you might recognise from our infamous Exposed In Sessions. Up for it?
APPLY TO PLAY!
We will also be offering the chance for South Yorkshire musicians to apply for the two opening slots on the brand new stage. Head on over to www.tramlines.org.uk and click on the ‘Apply To Play’ link to register your deets on the Gigmit page. Applications are open until the end of April. Oh, aye – keep an eye out for Tramlines Times. As standard. We’ll be bringing you breaking news/reviews via that too. Sorted. Si thi on t’other side, muckers.
Confirmed!
Headliners: Slow Club and Joe Carnall Jr With appearances from The Crookes, Trash, Blessa, Sherlocks, Nat Johnson, Best Friends and Tropic of Youth. Keep them peepers peeled on our website for more news and updates! The Exposed In Session stage adds to a massive bill which already includes the likes of Wu Tang Clan, Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Buzzcocks, Billy Bragg, Martha Reeves, The Sugarhill Gang and tons more. Tramlines advance weekend tickets are onsale now for just £30 plus booking fee. Head to tramlines.org.uk to get yours. For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk | 7

Royal Mint
The Queen (yeah, the actual Queen) is set to visit Sheffield on Maundy Thursday. She’ll be accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh at the service at Sheffield Cathedral. During proceedings, her Majesty will be presenting ‘Maundy money’ to local pensioners. The cash is given in recognition of those who have contributed to the community and their church. The ceremony dates back to the fifteenth century – and the amount of coins handed out, plus people selected to receive the coins, relates to the Sovereign’s age. For example, The Queen is due to turn 89 this year - which means 89 men and 89 women will be chosen to be presented with Maundy coins on Thursday April 2. This is the first time Sheffield has played host to the tradition. The Royal Maundy Service used to take place in London, however, The Queen decided the service should feature at a different venue every year. Pop along and experience this very special event for yourself. www.sheffieldcathedral.org

ARIES - Mar 21 - Apr 19
After spending an afternoon feeding the birds of Fargate, you realise how the 18 millionstrong pigeon community are hugely underrepresented in British politics, which leads you to form a party called the FPU (Feral Pigeon Union). Your bird-friendly manifesto causes an uprising amongst the wildfowl community, and with huge levels of winged voters turning out to have their say at the ballot box, you win a landslide general election. With large pigeon strongholds such as London, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield firmly under your control, you are lauded as a liberator of all feral birds. In the first few months of office you grapple with an uncooperative Whitehall in trying to fulfil your key manifesto promises: equal bird rights, more nests for the young and removal of all anti-roosting spikes. Success is short-lived, though, as the added strain of birds being eligible for free healthcare causes the NHS to collapse and vast swathes of the pigeon electorate are forced to flee the country. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 After successfully pleasuring yourself to an episode of You Countryfile, you spend the rest of the month trying to decide if this is an achievement or a new low. TAURUS April 20 - May 20 Due to government cuts your star sign has been pulled from the mag. GEMINI May 21 - June 20 In terms of likeability, you hover somewhere between Stalin and Adrian Chiles CANCER June 21 - July 22 Anger at a recent break-up leads you to wandering around parks in the summertime and laying huge turds between picnicking couples.
Your ugliness causes Jeremy Clarkson to take out a super-injunction against your face. SCORPIO Oct 23 – Nov 21 You develop a worldwide social media following on the premise of being a complete dick. Humanity has never been more stupid. LEO July 23 - Aug 22 Leos exhibit diarrhoea of the mouth and a constipation of good ideas. VIRGO Aug 23 - Sep 22 With your Bluetooth headset and Prada suit you are now just a Starbucks skinny latte away from becoming a professional twat. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22

Sam Cleasby
She’s one half of skilful happy-snappers The Picture Foundry, but Sam Cleasby has also embarked on a journey to raise awareness about living with inflammatory bowel disease. Sam was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2003, and had a colectomy and ileostomy in 2013. She later set up an online blog, So Bad Ass, to document what life is like with UC, but also to engage with others on the issues of body image, self-esteem and learning to love yourself. Earlier this year, an open letter penned to a woman who tutted at Sam for using the disabled toilets in a local supermarket went viral and received over two million views. We caught up with her to find out more. Hi Sam. Can you tell us about your new campaign, #MoreThanMeetsTheEye ? #MoreThanMeetsTheEye is a campaign for invisible disability awareness. We’re bombarded with campaigns and a constant begging for money – but this isn’t a Bob Geldof ‘give us your f*cking money’ thing. This is about understanding, knowledge and kindness. #MoreThanMeetsTheEye is a way to get all forms of disability into the minds of society and get us talking. The campaign stems from the open letter you wrote after your were tutted at for using the disabled loos as an ileostomy bag user. Did you expect the letter to go viral? Absolutely not! I’ve been writing my blog for nearly two years and I had no idea this one post would blow up like it did. I’m blown away and humbled that my message has touched so many people. I had my entire large intestine removed 18 months ago, and have had multiple surgeries since that cause pain, embarassment and generally make life a bit more difficult. All I’ve ever wanted to do is to use my terrible health situation to make a difference and help
others. Inspiringly, you’re very open about your disability. Have you always been this way or has it taken time to become so open? I was quite shy as a child, but growing up I forced myself to be more outgoing - and I’m definitely a more confident adult. After my surgery, I just felt broken and sad. I had no idea how to deal with suddenly having this bag of poo attached to my stomach; I felt old, unattractive and embarrassed. But my husband is just wicked; he ramped up his love and attention tenfold and made me feel like I was the most beautiful woman in the world. That helped. What inspired you to start your blog? It started almost as therapy – a way to deal with the massive changes in my life. It was just like a diary, but it very quickly gathered an audience and I realised there were a lot of people who were interested. Some have Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns disease, but many just connected with my story. I get emails from people going through so many different problems – from illness to divorce, loss or relationship problems or body confidence issues. I found that the life lessons I had learnt from my problems translated to others. What’s the next step? I’m writing a book. I’ve always wanted to write a book and this media boost has given me the kick in the arse to get it done. It’s part biographical and part self-help. It’ll about the life lessons I’ve learnt through chronic illness, life changing surgery and recovery.

During the May festival, hundreds of museums, galleries and historic spaces all over the UK will open up late and put on a dazzling array of special night-time events – one of which includes a torchlit tour of Kelham Island Museum.

Dear SP, After getting an earful from our lass, I finally caved and took her to see that 50 Shades of Grey cobblers (talk about being whipped, eh?). Needless to say, an evening of butt plugs, arse paddles and awkward boners ain’t my thing. I told her that she only fancied Mr Grey because he was a millionaire, and if he came from Gleadless, the dirty bugger would have been locked up by now. She told me to be quiet. Since the day we left that cinema our sex life has completely changed. Now, after a morning ‘quickie’, we each look like we’ve gone twelve rounds with Mike Tyson. It’s not one bit empowering - it’s knackering and makes me feel like a perv. SP, just how do I wean her off the whipping and take us back to trusty ol’ horizontal bop? Paul, Intake Paulos, don’t get your PVC knickers in a twist. I’ve had plenty of fellas come to me recently with a ball gag in one hand and a shattered libido in the other. ‘SP, I’m no Christian Grey,’ they tell me, ‘I’m not a ruthless flogging machine in an Armani suit.’ I do appreciate that, for some blokes, fruit-flavoured Johnny’s are about as adventurous as they’re willing to get. But who can blame her for wanting to spice things up a bit? All she’s had to look forward to on Friday evenings for the last few years is a takeaway and a spot of missionary. Until the nipple clamps begin to chafe, and some other slick haired douchebag replaces her hots for Mr Grey, you have no other option than to spank away, dear Paul, spank away. SP

@PropagandaSheff So, our DJ @CameronRawson had a bit of an unfortunate incident after playing @plugsheffield on Friday...
ULYSSES S. GRANT Ulysses S. Grant was a commanding general who helped to lead the Union Army to victory during the American Civil War. Promoted by Abraham Lincoln to Lieutenant General, and later elected twice for Presidency, Grant led the Republicans to remove vestiges of confederate nationalism and slavery - as well as helping to protect African American citizenship. To top it off, he also had a hand in defeating the Klu Klux Klan. Grant and his wife visited London to give several speeches and
@djfarmer01 Just overheard someone in the Travel Tavern telling their mate that Sheffield Wednesday have been taken over by “John West the tuna bloke”
dined with The Queen. During their tour of the country in 1878, they travelled to Sheffield and stayed as a guest for three days with our very own George Bassett - founder of Bassett’s Liquorice All Sorts, on Endcliffe Crescent. Sadly, the house is no longer there, as it was demolished and replaced with flats. Whilst in town, Grant was also a speaker at the annual Cutler’s Feast, in the Cutlers Hall on Church Street. Kudos to Edwin Self for the heads up on this one.

JOE FOOD GETS REYT UPSET ABAHT SUMMAT...
Bastards... Ok, so in a previous beefy column, (Exposed Magazine, October 2014, Don’t Snub The Pub) I bemoaned the decline of the traditional British pub – focussing specifically on the planned demolition of the 200 year old Cart and Horses in High Green. To my delight, I was later informed that planning permission had been rejected for a particularly prolific supermarket chain in the place of the pub where I spent many happy, if not always legal-aged, evenings of casual drinking with my family and fellow muckers. My faith in society restored, I looked forward to visiting when I next nipped home for a weekend. Admittedly, it was never the liveliest of pubs, but a decent place for a gargle and chock-full of fond memories for me and many others.
Perhaps more importantly, the structure itself is one of the oldest public buildings in the village and represents what a traditional boozer should look like – before they started ramming American-sized pool tables, retro signage and bucket loads of BBQ pulled pork inside lifeless industrial units. Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s a place for both shitty bars and dreary supermarket chains in today’s world. We are all guilty of, at times, surrendering to the throes of instant gratification: the hungover need for a five minute walk to purchase a ten minute ready meal. But old English pubs need more protection because, unless we’re very careful, the high streets of our villages, towns and city centres will come to represent a monotonous, Scooby-Doo style scroll of bleak buildings, uniformed supermarkets and ‘burger and a pint’ drinking establishments. Despite an early victory for the future of ‘T’Cart’, the war was later lost and the
building has since been destroyed. Two centuries of history reduced to rubble. And what for? A duplication of the same glossy yet charmless supermarket which we already see just a stone’s throw down the road. The elderly gentleman who for years has sat quietly in the corner of the snug sipping at a Tetley’s, contented in his brief moment of leisurely solitude and frothy company, will now be forced to abandon his simple yet pleasurable routine. That’s not very fair. In fact, it stinks. The charm of small villages and towns throughout Britain lends heavily from the old buildings which inhabit them, namely the churches, houses and pubs. They exude a sense of charisma which cannot be replaced by extended shopping hours or three quid meal deals. That’s the sixth pub in the last few years which has closed in the village; and at this rate there’ll soon be sod all else to do other than tuck up on the settee with some cheap tinnies and the company of Simon, Louis et al. Stop the world, I want to get off.
Got beef? Drop me a line - Joe@exposedmagazine.co.uk. or @exposedmagsheff

to spread the word about the great work we are doing for young people in Sheffield every day.” In addition, Sheffield United Football Club will be hosting a sleepover on April 10 – called Sleepout United – to raise money for both Roundabout and St Wilfrid’s Centre for homeless people. 500 places are available to camp out either at pitchside or in the stand of Bramall Lane. The event is one of a kind in the UK, giving fans the chance to kip where their heroes take to week in week out. Free entertainment will be provided until 11pm. Hot drinks will also be available, though donations will also be welcome, and guests are free to bring their own food and drink

THE BEER HOUSE Us? Out on a school night? Drinking copious amounts of delicious slurpy booze? All in the name of a cheeky little feature? With our reputation? Ah, go on then. To The Beer House – and don’t spare the liver! Words: Rachel Heward Pics: Carl Reid
It’s a Monday evening and we’re cosying up in the back room of Sheffield’s first micro pub, The Beer House. Situated on Ecclesall Road, the venue houses just forty drinkers and takes up a former retail space; snug but modestly decorated, it’s not about airs and graces here, but simply good quality beer, fine wine and a decent selection of spirits. There’s no music playing, not a telly in sight, and for some reason the whole place is a dead zone for phone signals. See it as a sanctuary from the modern world, where proper pub conversation can thrive and the lively pub debate is revived. The fire’s roaring and we’re about to embark upon a beer, wine and gin tasting challenge. Joining us is Exposed beer blogger extraordinaire, Jules Gray, Exposed Ed Carl and Ellen Beardmore, political reporter for The Star and food writer for The Sheffield Telegraph. Alongside a group of university students it’s Exposed vs. The Star/Telegraph - me vs Ellen. Jules and Carl are supposedly there as a helping hand, but insist they’re taking part “just for fun”. Jules fills out her answer sheet pictorially, and Carl describes almost every drink as “quaffable”. Looks like I’m on my own here then…
coming out virtually the same colour I started to doubt my earlier choices. Was number three more hoppy than number two? Do I even really know what hops taste like? Is it velvety and sweet or floral and bitter? Only really sure about one or two of the darker more ‘malty’ and ‘chocolately’ ones, this round prompted a lot of scribbling and crossing out. Outlook is not good. Moving onto the wines I was certain this would be an easier job. Two reds and two whites to place – it’s 50/50, and I’ve done plenty of legwork in the

past so I’m feeling pretty confident. It’s a choice between a wine that has had its grapes ‘cooled by winds from the Pacific Ocean’ making it taste ‘delicate, zesty and herbaceous’ and one that has a combination of ‘pineapple and pear’ aromas with ‘the dense body and floral touch of Viognier’. With a distinct aroma of what I can only describe as ‘white wine’ I hazard a guess and hope for the best. My school of thought is that the one I like the best is probably the one with the most flamboyant description. The odds are with me surely? After two very drinkable reds that taste equally ‘rich and juicy’ we move onto the gin. With one distinctly more spicy than the other more delicate gin, this is the round that I’m sure I’ve nailed. Ellen openly admits that her drink of choice would be a lavishly made cocktail and assures me that she had the exact same doubts during the beer round. We think it’s a conspiracy and that they were actually all the same (classic loser talk). Jules’ drawings of a lemon, a bar of chocolate and a loaf of bread don’t inspire much confidence and Carl’s answer sheet is rife with innuendo, rating each beer on
how generous its head is. So far, so good. The scores are out of 14, and you can get bonus points for naming the type of beer or wine. A far cry from bonus points I ended up with a measly 5, while Ellen got a score of 3. I was actually much better at matching the beer than the other drinks, and it turns out the ones I was positively sure of couldn’t have been more wrong. Surprisingly, Jules and Carl totted up an impressive 13 – perhaps not overthinking it was the trick. Beating us all though were the students who took part on the other side of the room. Those loans had obviously been well spent… Despite being micro, The Beer House’s selection of tipples is far from it, and we got to sample a pretty good selection. With constantly rotating beers from breweries such as Marble, Day of The Dead, Sonnet 43 and The Little Ale Cart, as well as speciality gins like Bathtub and Warner Edwards (plus an impressive wine selection), The Beer House offers a lot more than its name suggests. Check them out on Twitter @Beerhouse623 for info on their monthly tastings from guest specialists.
This one is going down as a win, even if it was only just. Thanks to Ellen, Carl and Jules for joining us and to John and Chris at The Beer House for hosting.

Welcome, friends, to your monthly In Session feature, do take a seat. Feel free to edge a bit closer. All good? It delights me to report that we’re unwinding with a frothy latte and stripping back into our acoustic undergarments inside the pleasant surroundings of the Steam Yard Café.
Joining us is Sam Genders of part solo project, part musical collective, Diagrams. At the risk of erring upon his distaste for the pigeon-holing of music, I will tentatively introduce Diagrams as folktronica with shades of synth-pop intermittently thrown into the rather lovely mix. However, judging by his rather humble, unassuming nature I’d imagine that Sam would prefer for you to take a listen to his music and make your own mind up. In that case, I’d suggest you start with the latest album, Chromatics, which was written after his move to the Steel City and hit the shelves earlier this year. We caught up with Sam before his live session to talk songwriting, influences and a musical excursion to China. Hi Sam, wonderful to have you on board for an acoustic Exposed In Session instalment. Have you chosen which tracks you’ll be playing? ‘You Can Talk to Me’ is a song which works quite well acoustically, so I’ll be playing that. I’ll also be performing ‘Phantom Power’. I’m glad you mentioned ‘You Can Talk To Me’, because that’s a bloody gorgeous song – and probably my favourite from the album. Thank you! I actually intended to write that song for another person: it wasn’t intended for me or this album at all, which probably explains why it’s come out in a slightly different style to my usual stuff. But once I played it to my wife and manager they both told me that I just had to keep it for myself. I suppose there’s a bit of irony there? It could be seen as strange how one of the most touching songs on the album was written for somebody else. Yes, I know what you mean. I was pleasantly
Words: Joseph Food Photography: Timm Cleasby www.picturefoundry.com surprised with how it turned out. You see, I do quite a bit of co-writing and I sometimes like stepping into another frame of mind when writing music. A fresh perspective can be helpful at times? Definitely, it gives you new ideas. That can be the main challenge in writing music: coming up with new ideas. So what sort of ideas or narratives does your latest album explore? There isn’t really a narrative running throughout the album. I don’t really think it matters whether an album has a narrative or not – it can still be good either way. For me, music is there primarily to have some type of effect, whatever that may be. I do like the idea of albums which have some form of narrative running through it, but for this album I simply chose eleven of the best tracks I had. But surely there’s a thought process to be had when putting together the track listing on an album? Doesn’t that have an impact on the ‘feel’ of the record? It does make quite a bit of difference, actually. It surprised me when I noticed how things could change dependent on the order of the songs. For somebody like myself, it is important that the first song has enough impact to draw people in and persuade them to listen on. There’s no doubt about the importance of a first track to an album. In terms of ideas, the album explores of key themes such as

relationships and the environment I was in when writing the songs. I did get married two years ago – which probably explains why relationships are a key theme. A slightly belated congratulations on that! You also made the move from London to Sheffield about two years ago. How are you finding things here? To be honest, I feel like I’m only just settling down! It’s been such a bonkers two years including trips to China, album recording, teaching, etc. – it’s like I’m only just starting to have a bit of time to get to know the city. I’m from Matlock originally, so the idea of moving back up North always appealed to me. Also my sister lives here, and it’s always nice to move back out towards the countryside. But it was largely a financial decision as well. I know it’s a cliché, but Sheffield is genuinely an incredibly friendly place. I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned the words ‘big’ and ‘village’. Yeah, I know that’s mentioned quite a lot. But it does feel a bit like that! I’m looking forward to getting out and seeing a few gigs now. You would have been in Sheffield while writing material for the latest album. Did you feel that the location had any impact on the final product? Yes, definitely. Before I moved to Sheffield I was trying to write music in a small flat in which people were almost falling over each other. For example, I’ve now got my own little room inside my house where I can go to write music – and that space, albeit quite small, makes a huge difference. In some ways, I found that I could be myself a bit more. So, yes, being here has inspired the album. It’s interesting, to me, how the city has inspired such a vast array of musical styles: the pulsating steelworks and mechanical sounds of Cab Vol, et al., over to gritty indie-rock, across to the warm, melodic sound of your album. I suppose it could represent a changing city.
it is important that the first song has enough impact to draw people in and persuade them to listen on. There’s no doubt about the importance of a first track to an album...
IN SESSION CO-SPONSOR
Yes, I suppose it depends on what different people take from a place during certain times. I like music that has mixture of raw, electronic sounds and natural sounds. I suppose that fits the environment perfectly here. Then again, you’re not a stranger to travelling. Last year you spent five weeks collaborating with local musicians in China as part of the British Council’s Musicians in China Residencies programme. Culturally, what were the difference – with regards to both music and lifestyle? It was absolutely bonkers, if I’m being honest. I turned up assuming I’d be provided with equipment, the opportunity to rehearse with some Chinese musicians and a slot at a prestigious festival (laughs) - but it turned out that I wasn’t even booked to play the festival and had to negotiate some time on stage with a Chinese rock band as the second guitarist! Musically, the alternative industry is still very much in its infancy there; the network which we have over here doesn’t exist. In Changsha there was plenty of pop music and their take on alternative music was Red Hot Chili Peppers-style rock. There was a lot of interest in the music I was playing, and I predict – well, I hope – that there will be an explosion of alternative music over there at some point.

Exposed Meets Drenge. Words: Rachel Heward. Derbyshire duo Drenge are well known in these parts since crashing onto the Sheffield scene in 2011 with their gritty postgrunge style of rock ‘n’ roll. After relentless touring on the back of their self-titled debut album in 2013, the boys have been slowly cracking away at album number two - with the first single ‘We Can Do What We Want’ premiered as the ‘Hottest Record in the World’ on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show. We caught up with Eoin Loveless to find out about the new record, his obscure writing process, the band’s move to Sheffield and the prospect of adding a new member to the band with each album they produce. Halfway through an engulfing day of press interviews that inevitably goes hand in hand with a band on the verge of a highly anticipated second album, Eoin tells us, “I’m just trying to get my head around our world at the moment. It’s exciting; I really just want everyone to be able to hear the whole album now.” Sentiments which are undoubtedly reflected by their fans; the band received a huge amount of acclaim as they scored the opportunity to reach a much wider audience after performing WCDWWW during their US TV debut on Letterman. So, is this the next step - Drenge venturing across the pond and conquering the States? “I don’t know, really. It involves such a heavy amount of work, and I think you never realise how big a place it is before you get over there. But the best thing about being in America is that nothing seems to disappoint. Like nothing will fall below your expectation. It’s odd, when we got to New York and the taxis were everywhere and the steam as well – it’s just as you expect and everything is exactly as you’ve seen and been told”.

And then there’s the worst. As with everything in America, Eoin explains, the poverty is also abundant. “The level of it and the fact that it’s so visible is shocking. When we were in San Francisco, we were walking through this really dodgy area. It was pretty terrifying”. A far cry from the rolling hills of Derbyshire, no doubt. Yet, despite the distance, new album Undertow still has a glint of home. Track names such as ‘Running Wild’, ‘The Woods’ and ‘The Snake’ suggest that rural life is still very much a part of Drenge’s music, and this boils down to Eoin’s intriguing way of envisaging an album, and his approach to song-writing. “I suppose it was a way of me coming up with something to link them together, a way to create direction in the song-writing. There’s a story. It’s an elaborate way of doing things - but I imagined committing a crime, like a bank robbery in Sheffield or something, and then jumping in a car and driving up to Ladybower, Derwent, somewhere like that. Then I’d dump the car and hide in the forest or something. You could literally not be found for days. It’s so isolated. Well, I couldn’t get away with it now I’ve told you…” Perhaps not. It’s also on this album that the duo has expanded; bassist Rob Graham performs on a few tracks (and with the band on stage), proving that Drenge aren’t afraid to buck the two man trend - look no further than Black Keys, Slaves and Royal Blood. It’s clearly a formula that has its merits. Eoin explains that the band also had the luxury of time with Undertow, since the label was in the process of being bought out. “We had bags of time to record the album, there was absolutely no pressure. We had Ross Orton producing and we just went down every day for four months. We had a long time on it as we had just moved to Sheffield full time. It was great because we got
There’s a story. It’s an elaborate way of doing things - but I imagined committing a crime, like a bank robbery in Sheffield or something, and then jumping in a car and driving up to Ladybower to see so many gigs in the city as well. We caught Blood Sport at the Audacious Art Experiment space. They’re just getting better and better - especially if you can catch them in that kind of intense, late night environment. They’re the best live band in Sheffield, for me. We also caught Hookworms at The Harley. Basically, we just took the chance to see loads of mates’ bands that were touring through the city.” Having shot to fame at a time when the darker side of rock was being represented in the Sheffield music scene through the likes of Dead Sons and Wet Nuns, we ask Eoin whether he still thinks there’s a scene like that bubbling under the surface.

“We kind of lost touch with what was going on back here when we were touring, but I know Best Friends are doing pretty well at the moment, as is Nai Harvest. I think there’s another wave of more indie music coming through, as opposed to heavier rock or whatever. Sheffield has never had a static trend for more than one or two years, which is obviously a good thing.” Hitting The Leadmill on April 17, Eoin says Drenge are looking forward to their (kind of) homecoming gig. “It’s gonna be a mad one - it will definitely get a bit crazy. Although, I did promise myself

that I would go home straight away after as we’ve got a gig the next day in Norwich. It’s just not rewarding when you’re hungover. I’ve done it before and it’s just a no-go - especially the drive.” Reminiscing on another occasion where Eoin was slightly worse for wear, he sheds light on Drenge’s ‘discovery’ story (every band has one). It’s the tail-end of Tramlines, Drenge are jamming in a dusky corner of the Old Number 7 as Geoff Barradale approaches. “He was all ‘you know, we should record some stuff’ and I was just like ‘who with?’ We were already moderately known in Sheffield but it did end up being a bit of a kick-starter.”
Number two: Firehouse Subs.
FACTOIDS!
• Drenge take their name from the Danish word for ‘boys’, although it’s pronounced differently. • When Labour MP Tom Watson resigned from the Shadow Cabinet in July 2013 he ended his letter on a lighter note, recommending Drenge as a band to listen to. • The artwork for Drenge’s debut album features a photograph of Wardsend Cemetery in Sheffield. • Bassist Rob Graham who joins Drenge on a couple of songs on ‘Undertow’ and live on stage, was formally in Sheffield band Wet Nuns. • You can watch a video of Drenge performing live for Exposed In Session in 2013 online at exposedmagazine. co.uk/music/in-session.
And of course the Old Number 7 has since changed face and evolved into a potato shop. So this gives us an idea. Eoin, if you will: Band name or fast food restaurant? First up: Jimmie’s Chicken Shack. “That sounds like fast food.” Ah, wrong! Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is an American alt-rock band from Annapolis, Maryland. Catch Drenge at The Leadmill on Friday April 17. Go to www.leadmill.co.uk for tickets and more. 32 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk
“Hmm. Fast food.” Correct! Numero trois: Mustard Plug. “That’s gotta be a band. Cool Name.” Indeed! They are a ska band from Michigan. Next up, The Juice To Make It Happen. “That sounds like some sort of juice bar, yeah.” Wrongo. The Juice To Make It Happen are in fact a genre blending musical entity from Oregon. Whatever that means. Five: Jabber Jaw. “Band, I reckon”. They are in fact a hard surf rock band from the Isle of Wight. Last up, Chick Fil-A. “Erm, fast food.” Right you are – good for chicken melts apparently. An impressive 4/6, not bad. So, finally, what’s next for Drenge? World tour? Fourth member? “Yeah… the plan is every time we do a record to add another member (laughs). But yeah, loads of touring, and just kind of forcing people who might like our music to listen to the album”. We don’t think they’ll need much forcing.

Wedding may
Set against a stunning backdrop of the picturesque Peak District is The Maynard - a beautiful country wedding location. Dozens of brides-to-be braved the high winds and gales to attend The Maynard’s Wedding Showcase event recently for a sneak-peak of what the Derbyshire venue has to offer as the perfect wedding venue. “It may have been blowing a gale outside, but we hope it was the insight into how your wedding will look and feel that blew the brides away,” said Kate Lloyd, weddings coordinator at The Maynard. “You have to experience the hotel in its full wedding glory to fully appreciate it – and, when the Chatsworth Suite is dressed for a wedding breakfast, it really is quite spectacular. It almost transforms into a scene from Downton Abbey!” In addition to a tour of the venue, the future brides were treated to a goodie bag filled with ideas and treats for the planning of their wedding, as well as the chance to chat to Kate about the various packages available at The Maynard. As well as Kate’s advice, the showcase hosted a number of handpicked local suppliers that were offering information on other aspects of wedding planning - including dress designers, cake makers, florists and entertainers. Couples also had chance to sample the Derbyshire hotel’s wedding food with complimentary canapés and fizz on arrival.

Who Won What? Last month saw the 9th instalment of our annual Exposed Awards - offering up the best opportunity to celebrate Sheffield’s finest talent. And, crikey, it went off. This year was a full-on Oktoberfest affair. There was lederhosen, oompah and clinking steins galore (hic). 22 awards were up for grabs spanning food, drink, fashion, beauty, music and beyond – with our exclusive Exposed gongs being snapped up by the very best our fair city has to offer. Plus, all the nominations and winners were chosen by YOU. You spoke, we listened… so, let’s have the winners, ja?

How do you feel about winning this award guys? Great! It’s our fourth year now, we weren’t really expecting it again but it looks like we’re back! Where are you going to put the
award? In the middle of the shop! In fact, scrap that, we’ll put it on the till for everyone to see. If you had to make shoes with animal faces on the toes, for
a new fashion - what animal would you choose? A pig - that when you press the toe of the shoe, it makes an oink noise - they’d have to be pink kitten heels!

This isn’t your first Exposed award, is it? Nope, third year in a row now! So, the shelf’s getting a bit full then? A bit *laughs* - but we’re hairdressers, we don’t save lives! If you had to give a poodle
a new ‘do - a Phillip Nixon special - what would you treat it to? I’d just let the poodle work it, be themselves, work its little poodle-fro - you know what I mean? But I might accessorise and give it a little hat too.

exhibitions. If you could scale down a planet and fit it inside of the winter gardens instead of the gardens, what planet would you pick’? Mars for sure! I’d love to have all the Martians visit…
A popular winner, congrats... Yeah, thanks, we’ve won this award four times now, it’s great! What’s the weirdest thing you’ve put Henderson’s Relish on? Beans on toast? Actually, wait, no… last year I downed a pint of the stuff for that NekNomination thing that was trending on the web!

How does it feel to be Exposed Magazine’s best new restaurant? So happy to be here, we’re chuffed. If you had to anchor yourself to something what would it be? Wine! *laughs* All agreed?
Yeah, wine. Where will the award be placed? We’re actually gonna give it to our glass collector who’s leaving. He can take it to his next job, balance it on his head, and collect glasses at the same time!
How does winning this award feel? Pleasantly surprising and shocking. We were up against some cracking pubs, but yeah, The Fat Cat is an institution that’s really well known in Sheffield. Will the award be staying in the pub or are you taking it home? It will take pride of place on our wonderful shelves behind the bar! What’s the weirdest pub quiz question ever asked in the renowned Fat Cat pub quiz? ‘How many chains has Mr T got round his neck?’ How many?! We must know! Erm… two hundred and thirty-two? I don’t know either - we never did!

How are you getting to grips with your new award now you’re Exposed Magazine’s Best Unsigned Sheffield band? Absolutely terrible, it really feels terrible – no, it feels great, it really does. It’s a bit of recognition for all the hard work we put into the band and our shows. Are you guys gonna fight to the death to see who gets to keep it? No, Tom deserves the award - he’s a top lad. *Ruffles Tom’s hair* He really is tops, this one! If you were to compete on Come Dine With Me as a team together, what would the meal consist of? Hmm… boiled eggs, bruschetta, lasagne and meat and potato pie - you are welcome to a slice of our meat and potato pie.
What’s it like to win an Exposed award? We weren’t expecting it at all, really - so it’s absolutely the best surprise! When we went to accept the award, and everyone cheered, it made us feel like we really deserved it - which was lovely.
It’s not your first though… No, it’s our third! That’s pretty good going, right? What’s the weirdest thing you’d ever put in a sandwich? Well, because we work in a coffee shop, probably coffee granules? Or biscuits… and chutney? *laughs*

How does it feel to have won the Exposed award for Best Club Night? Great - we deserve this! We work hard, play hard, and we’ll probably party hard later to celebrate this award… then go back to the office in the morning *laughs*. So, you guys are a team and a half - does this mean you’re gonna have to share the award round like a football team trophy? One
week each, maybe..? We were just saying that – in fact that’s a brilliant idea, we’ll do that. What’s the craziest fancy dress you’ve seen in the club? It’s got to be Freshers week every year - those students just go all out wild with it! Probably some sort of jungle themed fancy dress. That sort of thing is always crazy and brave to say how cold it is out!
What’s your reaction to winning the Best Out-of-Town restaurant award? We’re really pleased - we weren’t expecting it to be honest. We won a couple of years ago - but there was a lot of really strong competition this year. Will you put the award in the restaurant, on the bar… on the bonnet of your car? In the toilet? Just joking, yeah, it’ll be behind the bar. What would you say is the Milestone’s secret to the delicious dishes that claimed you this award? Seasoning is key. We’re really lucky in Sheffield, wild garlic is springing up all over the place - and that’s great news for our dishes.

HONKYTONK’S Sponsored by bloo88
How does it feel as a relative newcomer to the scene to win an Exposed award? Really fantastic. I worked for Savills for the last three years and saw a gap in the market for a different style - and here I am! Where did the name Honkytonk’s come from? When me and my friends left secondary school, we changed our middle names to Honkytonk, which is actually an old saloon name. I guess it just stuck with me! Where are you gonna put the award? On the shelf along with the other celebratory ‘firsts’. The shelf has the signed receipt of my first paying customer and the champagne glasses from the first beer we had there to celebrate. I can’t wait to get it up - I can’t tell you how much it means to me!

How do you feel to have won this award such early days into the business? Brilliant, to get this level of recognition is amazing and this award is perfect for us - it shows us we’re doing something right! Will we be able to see the award in the pub anytime soon? Yeah, on the mantelpiece

However, we do regret to tell you that, like the Freddo, inflation has occurred - and now Space Raiders will cost you 60p, not the original 10p or 20p.

I dunno… I might put it above
my bed? No… we’ll put it above the bar, I’m sure. SoYo rhymes with YOLO which rhymes with yo-yo. Can the folk at SoYo yo-yo? Yes! We can walk the dog with a yo-yo and everything. Actually, I haven’t seen one of those in ages, can we find one right now and have a go at it? *Due to health and safety reasons, yo-yo’s were not permitted in this interview.

You guys have won not one, but two awards! How does it feel? We’re overwhelmed. We do the best we can with the team we’ve got. After last new year’s, we had a bit of a change. We’re getting good gigs and a good nightlife, so it’s great to know people have recognised it. What way does the water spin when it goes down the plug? Anti-clockwise! Any way you
want it? The way you need it? Left or right… I’m sure it depends on whether you’re in Australia or not though. Where will the awards be put in Plug? Can I have one? No you can’t! It’s going in the office. But… but… I’ve prepared my acceptance speech for being Sheffield’s best live venue? Okay, maybe you can have it - but only because you’ve worked so hard this year.
Beeches – you’ve just won your FIRST Exposed award! How do you feel? Shocked – it’s so lovely! Can you tell us a little more about yourselves and your produce? Well, we set about to reestablish Walkley after we lost a lot of shops - and made the decision five years ago that we would kick start it again. Originally, we set up as a butchers because my husband has been a butcher
all his life, then after that we opened an inner city farm shop stocking products from other independent businesses such as cheeses, chutney etc. We know that, if we unite together, we can beat the big supermarkets. If you had to live off one of your products for a year, what would it be? Well, seeing as me and my husband have a sausage business – I’d rather like my husband’s sausage!

The Afters
This year’s outstanding after party was held within the vibrant confines of Cubana – and, by ‘eck, what a do it was. Live music and a stunning atmosphere was the order of the evening at the Leopold Square Latin hotspot – which was packed to the rafters with winners, runner ups and awards attendees. The Shaun Mcloughlin Band (featuring singer songwriter Shaun Mcloughlin of The Sharp Cuts, Shaun Ward of former Simply Red fame on bass, and top Jazz session musician Caroline Boaden on drums) kept the party swinging with a host of classic anthems – and it’s fair to say there were a few sore heads the next day. Co-owner, Adrian Bagnoli, said: “The party had a great buzz. It was really nice to introduce the new Cubana to fellow caterers and independent businesses in Sheffield and to showcase our offerings. At Cubana, every night is music night!” Thanks, you lovely lot. T’was an amazing evening. See www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk for more.

City Of Beer
The Booze Is Back! Featuring more than 80 real ales, lagers, fruit beers, ciders (and a dash of Henderson’s Relish) - the University of Sheffield Students’ Union Beer and Cider Festival returns next month. Running May 1 - 3, with free entry on all days, this year’s festival, organised in association with the Sheffield University Real Ale Society, will also play host to a German themed bar complete with Steins of Pilsner (on Friday only) and a pop up Gin Bar featuring a selection of the UK’s finest gins. On Saturday there’ll be a Sheffield theme See www. su.sheffield.ac.uk for more.
with pies and lashings of Hendo’s. And on Sunday it’s Pig and Cider Day offering a free-range hog roast served by top city butchers Roney’s of Sheffield. Sunday’s event will also form part of the popular Contours Festival 2015. In addition, there’ll also be live folk and acoustic performances throughout the festival performed by some of the area’s best up and coming musical talent. All events are held in the bars and grounds of the University of Sheffield Students’ Union and are open to the public free of charge throughout.
Forget steel, Sheffield now has a new title, we’re the City of Beer! Proper beer, that is, none of that mass-produced lager for us! Such a thing was scientifically* proven by Beer Mat Movies, who went an entire year without repeating a single real ale establishment to reach its first birthday. Each week, the cinematic new releases are reviewed, on a beer mat, and posted to Twitter – all while enjoying a pint at one of Sheffield’s many bars and pubs. So, congratulations to Beer Mat Movies for turning one, and congratulations to Sheffield. Pint? It’s your round. It’s the film recommendations that our own office listen to, and the kind of work location we aspire to. I wonder if the boss will let us work out of the pub? Might happen… You too can read all the very latest film reviews, with a proper pint by going to the tweetering machine and following @beer_mat_movies *no science actually used

Rev de Taco
Get stuck into Taco Tuesdays - the latest venture from Revolucion de Cuba. We popped along to the launch recently to test out the ‘all you can eat’ offer – we know, it’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it, right? Going for the juicy pork option (there’s also chicken and veg) the rack of five hand-held soft shell tacos certainly didn’t disappoint, or last long, come to mention it. Served with house rice and beans, and a Pistonhead lager to wash it all down with, this is the ideal mid-week treat - and a tasty one at that. They’re also offering up 2-4-1 cocktails between 5pm and 7pm and live music to follow. Tuesdays are the new Fridays. Destined to get busy, booking is essential.

Bia Comida @ The Dog and Partridge 56 Trippet Lane, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S1 4EL Tel: 0114 270 6156 // facebook.com/ TheDogandPartridgeSheffield THE PLACE A second home to many of the Steel City’s Irish inhabitants, The Dog and Partridge is a cosy multi-roomed boozer nestled in the heart of the city centre on Trippet Lane. Undeniably friendly, with a cracking selection of cask ales and beers including Guinness aplenty, this could easily be mistaken for your average Irish watering hole. But, you’d be wrong. With the kitchen formally franchised out to Street Food Chef, and now operated by the Spanish-influenced Bia Comida, the Dog and Partridge isn’t afraid to add a little spice into the mix. THE FOOD ‘Good old pub food, but a little bit Spanish’ is what Bia Comida promises. And that’s exactly what they do. With an extensive menu varying from Bia Bar tapas, where you can get 3 dishes for £10, including paella, chicken wings, calamares, dough balls, white bean stew and empandillas, to the more traditional Bia Rapido lunchtime menu of burgers and baguettes, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste. Also offering a breakfast menu and classic
pub favourites such as ham, egg and chips, you’d struggle to find something on here you didn’t like. It’s all about mixing and matching, trying something new alongside old favourites and sharing with mates over a pint or two. Decisions not our strong point, chef Jimmy Lawless brought out an array of tapas treats for us to try. With clear favourites in the crispy pork strips, crab and cream cheese stuffed piquillo peppers and the chorizo and manchego soda bread, we quite literally couldn’t get enough. Then we were introduced to the Bia Sweetie menu, offering ‘cake-a-dillas’, the dessert style quesadillas filled with gooey sweet fillings - like melted Snickers and Eton Mess. These were phenomenal and an absolute must if you still have room after sampling the rest of the menu. THE VERDICT It’s official – Irish/Spanish food is a thing. Who wouldn’t love a blend of hearty pub grub favourites and sizzling Spanish tapas in comfortable, welcoming environs? It’s a perfect marriage for us. Slainte! Or should that be salud..?

Beer Goggles
To be honest, it’s amazing it’s never happened before… With scores of great pubs, and over a dozen breweries to its name, Sheffield has long been crying out for its own beer week. Certainly, that’s what our very own beer blogger, Julia Gray, and her trusty drinking buddy, Clare Tollick, thought when they decided to launch Sheffield Beer Week. Taking place last month, March 16-22, Sheffield Beer Week coincided with the SIBA BeerX festival and featured
everything from meet the brewer events, tap takeovers, cheese and beer pairings, brewery tours and book readings at a host of top watering holes and venues – such as Shakespeares, The Rutland Arms, Tap & Tankard, Urban Pantry and Anchorage. The boozy shenanigans concluded in a Closing Party at Stancill Brewery. Same again next year, yeah? Check out the Facebook page for a taste of what went off and keep an eye on the Exposed website for Jules’ blog where she’ll be taking about events in detail.

Ashoka 307 Ecclesall Rd, S11 8NX 0114 268 3029 www.ashoka1967.com
THE PLACE Small but perfectly formed, Ashoka has been at the forefront of quality Indian cuisine in Sheffield since 1967 - and is still as strong as ever. Newly refurbished, it’s literally like stepping back in time and on board a 1st class sleeper train in the days of the Raj. Chess board tiles, elegant booths, ingenious lighting (using clay chai cups), family photographs and a great selection of products and paraphernalia from the sub-continent give a real authentic ambience that can only enhance the experience. THE FOOD We’re greeted and seated by Ashoka’s charismatic owner Rahul and are walked through the new look menu. It’s not the usual novel length menu you might receive in other curry houses but a streamlined yet comprehensive arrangement of speciality dishes and Anglo-Indian favourites. Many of the dishes come with a small narrative on their origin which leads to some pretty
intriguing names - such as Hill Station Hot, Taxi Driver Curry and Cricket Pakora. We’re hungry, so go for a selection of four starters. The black pepper prawn puri was elegantly creamy and gently spiced in a crisp shell; the Seekh kebab had a lovely kick and was smothered in fresh, tasty and sizzling peppers and onions. Our personal favourites were the Cricket Pakoras and mustard pepper lamb chops. The Pakoras hold the ‘Cricket’ moniker as they were made as snacks whenever India played cricket back in the day. Crispy, with a melt in the mouth centre, we could have literally eaten 50 of them. The lamb chops are up there with the best I’ve tasted. Deliciously
spiced, with plenty of meat, they fell off the bone with very little tempting. Overall, this was an excellent start. For our mains we wanted to sample as much as possible - so Rahul kindly agreed to provide half portions of four dishes (they will do this on occasion, depending on how busy they are). Their top seller, the caramelised Kashmiri lamb was superb - medium spiced with tender lamb and a sticky onion based sauce. The Kolkata Karai, a traditional Apna style dish, was fragrant with ginger and a great green chilli punch. Our seafood option, the Keralan coconut prawn curry, gave a real taste of southern India with a devilishly spiced yet rich sauce. The crowning glory, however, was the Taxi Driver Curry. The dish is named after a local cabby that fancied eating his own creation and kept coming back. This very special ensemble comprises of minced lamb and chicken tikka with a serious smack of garlic and chilli. Believe me, it’s awesome. THE VERDICT We have an abundance of curry houses in our fair city, but there are only a handful of great ones. Ashoka is certainly in the great minority - and on this showing will certainly be around in another 50 years and beyond.

Pie 1 Classic pork pie and a Huntsman (chicken, pork & stuffing) pie from Waterall Brothers Butchers Starting off small we head on down to the Moor Market for an infamous Waterall Brothers pork pie. The lunchtime queue at this place doesn’t lie and these pork pies are a in a league of their own. For something different we try a Huntsman pie which is chicken and pork with stuffing layered on top. Pie-tastic.
Pie 2 Minced beef & onion pie from The Nottingham House Unquestionably a pie haven for locals and students alike, we couldn’t resist a simple minced beef and onion one from their impressive ever-changing menu (we’re assured their roast dinner pie on a Sunday is a real winner). Served with chips, mushy peas and slathered in gravy, this was a proper pie, and certainly didn’t last long with us hungry lot.
Pie 3 Chicken and leek pie with braised relish red cabbage from Café Pie How could we miss this one out? A retro looking café decked in artwork from local artist Matt Cockayne, this is Henderson’s heaven (with Henderson’s themed toilets) and the place to be for a proper belly busting pie. The icing on the cake for this one was the melt in the mouth braised relish red cabbage. Definitely a must for those seeking a side dish substitute from your average plate of peas. A proper pie-ful!
Pie 4 Spicy chicken sriracha pie from The Old House Well known for their unusual pie concoctions, we opted for a chicken sriracha filling to spice things up a bit. Despite starting to feel slightly pie-eyed it wasn’t hard to power through as this was something special. Unique in flavour, with just the right amount of fire, The Old House is the place to go if you’re after something different from your pie endeavours. 78 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

Pie 5 Gluten-free apple and Wensleydale pie from Eten Café There’s a saying in Yorkshire that ‘apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze’. To encase this traditional Yorkshire pairing, Head Chef Lee Vintin has perfected gluten-free pastry after years of being unable to eat pie due to having celiac disease. A scrumptious change that proved we were definitely ready for dessert; this is gluten free goodness at its best.
Pie 6 Banoffee pie with a side of blueberry cheesecake and a chocolate brownie from Smoke Barbecue While most people know Smoke for their barbecued ribs, sizzling sausages and pulled pork, they also create delicious desserts that rarely get shouted about. And that’s why we’re here. The banoffee pie in a cup was a revelation, the perfect portion of sweet pie-goodness. The Smoke BBQ staff clearly know the way to our hearts (and bellies), throwing in a blueberry cheesecake and chocolate brownie for good measure.
Pie 7 Fish pie with calamari from Silversmith’s Restaurant With a sympathetic eye as we (quite literally) roll into Silversmith’s, the chef catered to our bulging bellies and served up a couple of starter-sized fish pies. Light, fluffy mash layered over white fish combined with crispy calamari created a wonderfully light yet satisfying pie, welcomed after an indulgent day of overeating (totally worth it). Excuse us whilst we sleep our way through until the next British Pie Week. We’d like to thank each venue involved, not only for their fabulous freebie pies, but also for their generous donations to St Luke’s Hospice. SHEFFIELD FIRE AND POLICE OVERNIGHT GHOST HUNT
Sheffield Fire and Police Museum //£25 // April 25 Are you brave enough to enter the old Victorian station, where a wealth of paranormal events have been reported over the years? Join in a séance and vigil in one of the most haunted buildings in the city. First opened as a fire station in the early 1900s, it was soon merged with the police station and was even used as an air raid shelter during the war. This building was then left derelict and abandoned for years until fire fighters decided to restore its historical beauty into the museum it is today. Many visitors have reported dark shadows and mists wandering through the walkways and poltergeist activity is also very common here. In the old cells, where in the early 20th century prisoners were allegedly held in dark and dank conditions, many claim to hear whispering voices. Not for kids! This event has the potential to be so terrifying in fact that this is strictly over 18’s event - you’ve been warned. www.spookynights.co.uk

Exposed Meets Charles ‘Chuck’ Deiterich.
Charles ‘Chuck’ Deiterich is a retired NASA ‘RETRO’ flight controller who’s worked on some of the most memorable and historic missions in space exploration - including all the Lunar landings, Apollo 13, Skylab and the Space Shuttle. He hits Sheffield next month for a first ever visit to the UK to discuss his incredible career and share his memories from the golden age of spaceflight at Something Astronomical. Exposed caught up with him to find out more. Your career has been extensive throughout your 30 years at NASA. You’ve worked on the moon landings, including the first manned lunar orbit mission, helped Neil Armstrong land on the moon, and developed the Apollo 13 abort manoeuvre plan which allowed the crew to return safely. Is it possible for you to choose a career highlight? Apollo 8 was exciting because it had the most unknowns – but Apollo 13 was the most demanding. I think the most fun I had was the shuttle approach and landing tests. You’ve spent many years helping to send astronauts into space, have you ever wanted to go yourself? I did actually apply once, but no joy unfortunately… So what is it about space that has
captivated you for so many years? I was always interested in flight - and space is just an extension of that. Plus, I read lots of science fiction growing up. I guess as far as the job goes, there were always new things to figure out and do with little history for guidance. There was never a dull day. It was an incredibly fun and rewarding position to be in. Something Astronomical has been running for three years now with great success. Do you have anything special in store for this year’s lecture? Hopefully, I’ll be giving people a unique insight to Mission Control Centre operations. I’ve been impressed by the Something Astronomical Twitter (@ somethingastro) responses and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the folks in the UK. I’m really looking forward to it. What would you like to see the next generation of NASA accomplish within space exploration? Essentially, I’d like to see us go back to the moon - and set foot on Mars. Don’t think that will happen until after 2030 though. You’ve been featured within the
music video ‘Go!’ by Public Service Broadcasting, what do you think of the song? I just recently heard it. It’s fab - and it shows support for what has been done and what should continue to happen. During your time at NASA, have you ever seen any evidence of aliens/UFOs? Is the truth out there? Honestly, I’ve seen no evidence. But I will say there could be something out there… Tell us something about space that will blow our tiny minds… If you are in the same orbit as another spacecraft, but a couple of miles behind it and thrust at it, you’ll start moving toward it - then start climbing. In about 20 minutes, you’ll be back where you started - but higher - and moving backwards never to catch up. If you thrust downward the right amount, you’ll start moving down, then start moving forward - and in about 22 minutes start heading upward… slowing down going forward. In 45 minutes, you’ll be at the other vehicle and moving upward - which you can stop by thrusting downward the same right amount.
Something Astronomical takes place at Sheffield Hallam University’s Peak Theatre on May 16 from 1.30pm followed by a rooftop BBQ and extended Q&A from 6pm at Curzon Cinema. See www. somethingastro.com for more.

Exposed gets the lowdown on Theatre Deli North. Words: Jade Jobes. Pics: Joe Food. There’s been a hub of activity within the old iconic Woolworths building on The Moor of late – thanks to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Theatre Deli North. So, if you’ve ever had a nosey through the window and wondered what the devil was going on, wonder no more – as we caught up with assistant producer Sarah Sharp to find out all about it. Hi Sarah, Could you explain to our readers in your own words, what Theatre Deli North is? Theatre Deli North is the Northern branch of Theatre Delicatessen - a charity aimed towards helping and supporting new and emerging artists and transforming creative spaces. They started a few years ago with the hope of giving performers the support and space to be able to develop performances at the beginning of artists’ careers. It’s particularly special as it’s the first project out of London. Emerging theatre companies have particularly found the new venue exciting. It’s becoming quite a hub for a variety of performances. How did it all start? The first Theatre Delicatessen was created by artistic directors Jessica Brewster and Roland Smith, with production manager Fergus Waldron. They found a space above a pub in London and helped to bring other artists in and set up performances. Their DIY attitude gained support and it took off very quickly. What inspired the move up North? During the Tour De France, three artists arrived in Sheffield whilst touring their show Pedal Pusher in Furness Park. They fell in love with the art scene and the grass roots atmosphere of Sheffield. We think it’s great that you’ve helped to re-use an old space, what attracted you to the old Woolworths building? The founders fell in love with the old Woolworths building instantly. With it’s labyrinth of corridors and hidden back rooms, the venue offered a variety of spaces each with a different atmosphere around every corner. It’s a jackpot venue for immersive and innovative theatre. Who is Theatre Deli North for? Fundraisers, the community and everyone from emerging artists to locals coming in for a cup of tea or to look at the art work.
The space really is open to everyone and available to use for anything - from an event, to a play, exhibition or even a comedy gig. It’s a space where both locals and artists can engage with the art work and break down the barriers between the more exclusive galleries with a welcoming space open to everyone. When are you open? The venue is open Thursday – Saturday 11am till 4pm. Limited opening as of yet, however, we’re open on late evenings due to performances and gigs - simply check out our Facebook Theatre Delicatessen or Twitter @ MoorDeli to find out what’s on and when. Can you give me a breakdown of the week for Theatre Deli North? Throughout the week, Theatre Deli North plays host to a variety of artists and emerging theatre companies - such as Strawberry Blonde Curls, As Long as Love Lasts and Footprint Theatre company. If there aren’t many shows on during the week, we host debates, a live art night each month and spoken word events. It gets much busier around the weekend as this is the most popular time the venue is booked. You put on a lot of great workshops and charity events, how do you decide which events to put on? Myself and the organisers often look at helping new and emerging companies as well as young artists at the start of their career who are looking for advice and support. We look at whether the company or artist needs the space and if they could put on the event without our help. A lot of the workshops and events are free, which is great, but how do you keep the place going? Theatre Deli North is a registered charity however we do need support and often rely on donations, fundraising or simply by bringing in customers for the events and the café. Since opening what has been your favourite event, play or workshop you’ve put on? Horror Souk has been a favourite of the venue so far - a huge theatre event which combined eight emerging theatre companies all around the building. They each created a response to the word horror, and they chose to do so in a variety of ways which explored

political, social, historical and comedic themes. Opening the café has been really exciting too as it’s allowed local people to come in and take a look around and learn a little more about the venue and what the company is about. What does the future hold for Theatre Deli North? We’d like to begin establishing nights and expand the café’s awareness which will allow the members of Theatre Deli North to support more and more artists and theatre companies. We’re also looking to find a piano in order to incorporate lunch time gigs and let people play for their lunch, which would be fun. We’d also like to incorporate a larger variety of art such as music, comedy, spoken
word and form a regular event list. Finally, are there any upcoming events which you are particularly excited about? The Deli has recently booked in a big LGBT event on the 18th of April, which will host a small film festival. Throughout the day, five documentary films will be shown, then a catwalk show will follow and finally transcend into a divine disco in order to raise money for LGBT Sheffield. We’ve also got events such as Northern Art Three on Friday 3rd April, hosted by emerging artists Charlotte and Tim, a fundraising gig organised by James Carter on the 7th April and another fundraiser for Peace in the Park on the 11th April put on by Nisha Laal.

SIMON AMSTELL REVIEWED. WHERE: CITY HALL
Tonight, Simon Amstell did what the best stand-ups do: taking us into his world, and making us see it through his eyes. Don’t be put off by his angst-ridden persona and self-obsession; it was very a funny show. He talked about his misjudged attempt at humour on Radio 1 on the morning Nelson Mandela died, and had a really incisive view on how the Queen must see herself. He is naturally concerned about how much denial she must be in when people treat her as being someone so special, when deep down she must know she’s just like the rest of us. He went on to tell us of his growing acceptance that he’s never going to be happy, having once convinced himself that when he was eventually successful, that he finally would be. Outwardly, he’s now a big hit. He’s in the middle of a sell-out tour, having just returned from a well-received New York residency, so he really has made it. But when people contact him on Twitter, to ask when his show will finish, so they can book a babysitter, he can’t get away from feeling ordinary again. His tour is called To Be Free, and his mixture of having the entire audience in fits of laughter whilst maintaining a self-lacerating approach to life is a liberating experience. He found himself spending three nights meditating in Sri Lanka last year. As he says, confessions like that perhaps explain why he’s not currently playing the O2 arena. Which may be true, but Simon Amstell provides intelligent, thought-provoking comedy and this was a hugely enjoyable night. Mark Perkins

STEWART LEE ON DJ IRONIK
“It’s very stressful living in London. There was a rapper in London, one of these rappers that they have now. You’ve seen them… in adverts and things. Anyway, um, his name was Ironik, and I R O N I K was how he spelt it. And last November, Ironik, he went on the tweets. He was a tweeter and, er, one Saturday last November, he twatted, which is the, erm, the past tense of tweet. One Saturday last November, Ironik twatted that he’d bought a new diamond necklace, and he twatted that he was on his way to Southend to do a gig, and then he twatted that he was on his way back to London, and then he got mugged outside his house. And now Ironik understands the meaning, if not the spelling, of his name.” For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk | 89

BANG ON!
Off the Rails celebrates its eighth birthday in style at Plug on April 10 – with a whopping seven-hour DJ set courtesy of 21st century trance icon Menno De Jong. This is Menno’s first ever solo set in the UK. With an impressive career spanning over ten years, and having been celebrated by fellow Dutch legends Tiësto and Armin van Buuren, this is guaranteed to be one of the most bouncing and energetic nights of the month. Be prepared for a long night of non-stop beats ranging from deep house to the best in alternative trance.
Big Bang began in 1992 as the UK Bungee Club - the largest Bungee provider in the UK. In 2010, this Sheffield Company exploded (pun fully intended) into Big Bang Promotions - and have expanded by galactic proportions since. Today, Big Bang is a group of 6 businesses tucked away in an industrial area of the city in a large but unassuming building known as Big Bang HQ. Inside you’ll find kilometres of climbing rope, squadrons of Segways, caches of cameras; the sort of toys they love. HR Manager Naomi describes them as ‘a provider of amazing experiences’. This is true, but it isn’t the whole story - so here’s a list of facts to paint a bigger picture: Tech Director Andy managed an Ultra-Marathon in the Peruvian jungle last year. Project Manager Will once fired David Hasselhoff 70m into the air. Technical Manager Ian taught war veterans to ride Segways for the closing ceremony of the London Paralympics. Ops Director James created a Car Bungee for Top Gear which toured the globe. Over 50,000 people took part in Big Bang’s events last year. So, if jumping off bridges, driving supercars or off-road Segway rallies are your thing, Sheffield has a company which can bring you that experience.

EXPOSED MEETS DANNY HOWARD. BBC Radio 1’s Danny Howard hits Sheffield’s Tank this month for what’s set to be a night to remember at the underground Arundel Gate hotspot. Exposed collared him to find out what he had in store for us. Hi Danny. You’ve just completed your first ever Nothing Else Matters… But The Music tour, how did it go? It was amazing, thanks! Certainly everything we’d aimed for it to be and more. We launched the brand at the end of 2013 with a couple of nights, and it’s been the host of the dance room at Blackpool Rocks the last two years, but apart from that it’s just been bubbling under the surface – this was the first time we’ve been able to do what we really wanted with it and yeah, the tour has been amazing. You’ve just released your fourth compilation album - with 1.8m listeners tuning into your dance anthems show on Radio 1 every week. That’s pretty impressive! Was it easy to pick the soundtrack and are there anymore plans to work with Radio 1 again to produce another compilation? I listen to so much music that, whenever it’s time to start working out the tracklist for one of these albums, it’s actually a really tough task! Then, if you add in all the legal and release restrictions that some tracks have, it can turn into a bit of a headache on that front. But, I think we’ve managed it - and the album was #1 on iTunes upon release which is always a good indicator! Hopefully we’ll be doing another one. With The Nothing Else Matters tour showcasing the best British talent from the UK dance scene, it must be something special to you. I never expected to be where I am and doing what I’m doing – I was very fortunate to get the opportunities that I was offered - and building the Nothing Else Matters brand as a platform for showcasing upcoming talent is a way to pass on those opportunities to the DJs and producers who ought to be listened to! We’ve had some amazing names on this tour, people like Philip George, 99 Souls, Eli & Fur, Disciples and loads more – you’ll be hearing a lot from these guys this year, trust me! You’ve got a pretty big summer lined up with Outbreak Festival, We Are FSTVL and Creamfields, have you ever had nerves before playing a set? It’s weird; I very rarely get nervous before playing a set. When you’re at an iconic festival, or in Ibiza on one of those unbelievable line ups, it’s usually a ‘pinch me’ moment - it can be a bit surreal - but as soon as you’re behind the decks all that’s forgotten and it’s just all about the music. What would your advice be to young aspiring DJs out there? I was once told ‘be tenacious’ - and I think that’s the one piece of advice that has really stuck with me. If you’re producing, find your own sound and don’t just copy what’s popular right now, but overall just keep pushing on and keep playing gigs - no matter how big or small. It’s a tough industry but, if it’s meant to be, it’ll work out. What are your plans after the summer, will work be out of the

equation after a hectic summer? Well, once the Ibiza season ends, the students all return and the traditional British winter clubbing season begins again! No doubt we’ll be swapping shorts for coats and jumpers, and beaches for cold, damp warehouses, but all being well, the party won’t be stopping. Sheffield loves nothing more than the dance scene, how will you raise the bar with the rowdy lot at Tank? I’ve never had a bad night in the Steel City - and can’t wait to be back! I’ve heard so many good things about Tank and I’ll be making sure there’s a few surprises thrown into my set . What else is in the pipeline? I’ve got a new single on the horizon which has been nicely building hype, then there’s the festivals as you’ve already mentioned, Ibiza will be on the cards again, Miami at the end of March - lots of exciting stuff. Sleep and rest has been well and truly put on the back burner. Follow @DJDannyHoward and check out Facebook.com/DannyHowardDJ for more.

80s cult skiffle cow-punkers will be hitting the City Hall stage this month for a show with the mighty Status Quo. We caught up with the late John Peel favourites to find out more. Interview: Adam Benny. Straight to the big ‘un, guys - you’re touring with Status Quo. Congratulations! How did it come about? Their brilliant promoter Steve saw us several times back in the day and has remained a fan. When he heard we were reforming he suggested us to the Quo guys and we were thrilled to be asked. As usual with Terry and Gerry everything that happens to us is by chance! For example, we got our demo listened to by John Peel because he had neighbours called Terry and Gerry - which led to three critically acclaimed sessions on his seminal radio show, a record deal and appearances on The Tube, Whistle Test etc. We’ve been very, very lucky! How did you react when you first heard about it? I was in the pub and couldn’t quite believe it. We couldn’t tell anybody because the dates hadn’t been released so we had to keep quiet but 98 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk
inside - we were all 21 again! It finally sunk in when, as Joe Strummer said, ‘We got our name on the small print of the poster’. It’s an absolute pleasure to be playing with one of Britain’s top bands. Fave Quo song/why? ‘Living on an Island’ because it’s reminiscent of our song ‘Percy Crusoe’ about a guy who pretends he’s on a desert island but is really in his shed! You’re playing at Sheffield City Hall with the Aqoustic tour on April 21; when was the last time you played Sheffield and how was it? I think the last time we played in Sheffield was at the University. It was a fabulous mad mosh pit of singing and dancing in a packed Union Hall. Sheffield crowds have always been kind to us - it’s a vibrant place. What’s your thoughts on the city? Fondest memory? We were lucky enough to play regularly in Sheffield

in the 80’s when there was a real buzz around music. The Leadmill was, and still is, a fab venue. I remember going to a pub, The Hallamshire I think, before a gig and playing pool with the guys from The Human League and Heaven 17. We beat them (laughs). It’s amazing how so many talented people and bands have come from the city: Alan Smyth, Pulp, Artic Monkeys to name just three. The whole place with its student population, quirky cool locals and indie feel adds to the healthy music scene. It’s independent venues and music that keep places exciting - and Sheffield has always produced bands whose music defines the feel of the city. That’s what happens in Brum and Manchester too. Do you expect a different kind of reaction from the modern crowd? I’m not sure what reaction we’ll get. We’ve been playing all over since October and the atmosphere has been fabulous. People from first time around and a surprisingly large amount of young vagabonds who discovered our music through their parents… and grandparents! Music is music and, if it’s done from the heart, I think it transcends age or fashion. Some folk will remember you from the 80s; are you going to stick to your skiffle punk roots and play all the classics for a bit of nostalgia or will you adapt to a more modern sound in an attempt to win over some new fans of the younger generation? We can only do one thing! It’s the same line up as in the 80’s - Terry Lilley on double bass, Gerry Colvin on guitar and lead vocals, Mick Howson on guitar and Sue Richardson on washboard. We play all our old songs but have six new tracks in the same style. I hope everyone will like it - young and old. To any Sheffielders who haven’t heard of you before; what would you say to them to convince them to come to the show? Terry and Gerry are a fun night out. Original songs about politics, love and society that are as relevant today as they were in the 80’s. Come along and see for yourself. You reformed last year after 27 years away. How come? I was invited to play a John Peel commemorative concert in Stockton on Tees and was working with Mick Howson at the time. We contacted Terry and Sue - we were surprised we were all still alive - and got together for a meet. After ironing out all the reasons why we split all those years ago we arranged a rehearsal and bingo - it was just as it used to be! Well, a little slower, but just as energetic. The next thing we knew we had loads of concerts, radio sessions, a website and a new EP. So what’s the full reunion plan? Are you staying together full time? We all do other music and art under our individual names. But, having said that, we’re back full time as Terry and Gerry and will carry on and see where it takes us. We’re having too much fun to stop. You released the Dear John EP last year; do you have any other plans for new music? The Dear John EP was to honour John Peel and featured five new songs and one recorded back in the 80’s. Our next project is another 6 track EP or perhaps a CD later this year. Cherry Red have just re-released ‘The Best of Terry and Gerry.. Let’s Get the Hell Back to Lubbock’ which is everything we’ve ever recorded and some live tracks too. It’s available in all good record shops and at our concerts. It’s a belter. What’s the most memorable moment of your career? Touring with the mighty Quo has to be a memorable moment but there are so many other great things that have happened to us. We were fortunate enough to have our five singles and album ‘From Lubbock to Clintwood East’ reach Number One in the indie charts… U2 were number two but went on to better things, I hear… and touring with The Pogues, Billy Bragg and playing Glastonbury also rank high.. I’d like to think even better things are coming up in the future. What else is on the horizon for you..? More touring, both in the UK and Europe, more recording and returning to Sheffield very, very soon. Catch Terry and Gerry with Status Quo at the City Hall on April 21. Noel Gallagher Chasing Yesterday
Fast becoming the Uncle Knobhead of British rock and roll, Noel Gallagher has spent the last year firing insults at pretty much anyyone with a quiff (or moustache) in the national music industry. Oh, and he’s also wrote an album. Then again, if anybody is justified in feeling a bit grumpy towards the ‘NME generation’ of today it’s probably him. 21 years ago he brought us Definitely Maybe and almost single-handedly heralded in a new era for the working class guitar band. Today that legacy has all but evaporated as he sees a chart monopolised by the likes of Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and - *gulp* - Bastille. Anyway, back to the highly anticipated album, Chasing Yesterday. Simply put, if you liked 2011’s Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, you’ll find enough of an Oasis-tinged, Weller-shaded, Marr-seasoned flavour to the album which will render it more than palatable to those hoping to taste a bit more of what Noel does best – melodic brilliance and itch-scratching rock tunes. And as evidenced with the positive reaction to tracks such as ‘Lock All the Doors’ and ‘Ballad of the Mighty I’, that’s something he’ll still be capable of pulling out of the bag for decades to come. Yes, he may still be chasing the once seemingly inextinguishable lights of yesterday, but even a somewhat apathetic, unrepentantly nostalgic Noel Gallagher holds enough charm and pure talent to provide consistent Britrock pleasure over ten solid tracks. 7/10 Joe Food
PUMPIN’ ON MI STEREO Them Crooked Vultures – Them Crooked Vultures
Bursting onto the scene back in 2009, Them Crooked Vultures surprised us all with special guest performances alongside Arctic Monkeys and then Leeds & Reading Festivals. The supergroup – formed of Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and all round legend Dave Grohl – also gifted us with this astonishing self-titled debut. Blending styles from QOTSA, Led Zep and Foo Fighters into a creamy melodic rock smoothie, making it near impossible to pick out a ‘best’ song from the album. It was just a simple case of three extraordinary musicians combining their talents to produce a scintillating musical baby. Well, not so simple, really - but still utterly brilliant. AB

Therapy? Disquiet After being described as a “sequel of sorts” to their million-selling 1994 album Troublegum, it’s forgivable to start looking for comparisons between said record and Therapy?’s latest, Disquiet. The band has aged 21 years since Troublegum, and it shows with a mellower effort this time around. While the lyrics still contain all the anger and emotion that is symbolic within their best-selling album, the music – while disgustingly heavy at points – seems a lot calmer overall. Despite dropping away from the limelight, this band still knows how to write dirty riffs that will leave you with a filthy bangover the next day. ‘Still Hurts’ serves its purpose as an exciting and compelling track to open the album, not to mention also as the first single from the record. However, due to the current state of the music industry, it’s hard to see this record becoming a commercial success. While a stint in the rock charts would be deserved, it looks like another good album that’ll unfortunately get swept under the rock radar rug. If you’re a 90s rock/grunge fanatic though, this record is for you. Gets ya right in the nostalgia feels. Adam Benney 6/10
The April Maze Sleeping Storm Sleeping Storm is an apt name for this album: its continuous relaxing tone soon makes your eyelids heavy with ensuing slumber. Throughout the record, the married duo of Sivan Agam and Todd Mayhew combine their vocals and instruments brilliantly. Todd provides the enchanting guitars while Sivan drones into your mind with deep cello vibrations. Second track, ‘I’ve Seen the Rain’ was released as a music video in November, and is sure to get your foot tapping along appreciatively. The album continues at a slow pace, with beautiful vocal harmonies and clever use of their minimal instruments. Midway through the record, ‘The Bishop Who Ate His Boots’ and ‘Don’t Let the Bastards Bring You Down’ provide a welcome upturn in pace. The former being a true story about Todd’s great-grandfather and his boot-eating exploits in the tundra, and the latter being a fan favourite pick-me-up released as a single in 2013. ‘Inside Out’ is a song that’s gathering some pace in terms of popularity, with plenty of Del Shannon-esque guitars and some wonderful vocals from Sivan. The only drawback is the ease at which you can lose interest. However, the duo have certainly created a piece of art they can be proud of. Adam Benney 7/10

Harley // April 24 // £7 With their highly anticipated second album Hairball due for release on the 27th, the scuzzy pop duo makes a welcome return to their hometown this month. After sufficiently whetting appetites with last year’s release of the Hold Open My Head EP, many fans were left gasping for some more punky swagger, unrelenting on-stage energy and apathy-soaked rasping vocals. Arcane Roots
Corporation Sheffield // April 24 // £10 A tight bundle of three-piece alternative rock madness is coming to Sheffield this April, as Arcane Roots bring their energetic live show to the Corp stage. Following a successful debut at Download Festival last year, the band lived up to the hype partly bestowed upon them since a raucous cover of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ found its way onto a Kerrang! tribute CD to Nevermind. Their 2013 debut album – Blood & Chemistry – coasted into the top 10 of the UK Rock Chart, and the band were awarded with support slots for the likes of Biffy Clyro and Muse. Boasting more dark energy than a fook off black hole, you can catch ‘em alongside Black Peaks, Solemn Sun and Gallery Circus. Tickets: www.corporation.org.uk
The View
Leadmill // April 3 // £14 Partly responsible for almost putting a number of denim manufacturers out of business in the year of 2007, the now slightly better groomed Scottish quartet hit the road once more after a slight break from touring. Pop on to the band’s website and after a rather long-winded tale of the bands peaks and troughs over the years, lead singer Kyle Falconer is quoted as saying, “all I ever need to see is people dancing.” And whether you’re a fan of The View or not, you can’t deny that they’re damn good at getting people up on a dancefloor. JUNGLE
WHERE: THE LEADMILL WHEN: FEBRUARY 27 Having dusted off their shade of anonymity, funk and soul collective Jungle are packing out venues throughout the UK as they branch out and bring their music to the masses. Having shot to fame last year on the back of brilliantly choreographed music videos featuring the likes of 6-year-old B-girl Terra and UK skate crew High Rollaz, the brainchild of south Londoners Tom McFarland and Josh Lloyd-Watson is now making waves in its full form – a seven piece live band. It’s Friday night and The Leadmill is at capacity - think 900 people dancing every which way as the stage is lit up by flashing ‘JUNGLE’ letters and impeccably timed and iridescent songs are enthralling the audience. This is what modern funk sounds like. Between songs, when elbows have stopped waving around and people are catching their breath back, the applause is thunderous. There’s some serious appreciation going on here, and none more than for Jungle’s latest single ‘Julia’. It’s the genuine passion and talent of the performers that makes this show what it is; they are enjoying it just as much as we are. The encore of crowd favourites ‘Busy Earning’ and ‘Time’ is the high point, rounding off an absolute corker of an evening and forcing me to put it out there and say that this is potentially the most fun I’ve ever had at a gig. It boils down to this - seize any chance you have to see this band. And wear comfortable shoes. Rachel Heward

Ordnance.
Combining indie and dance elements to create their own genre dubbed ‘New Culture’, local lads Ordnance are a band making a name for themselves across South Yorkshire. The psychedelic trio were named as one of our Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2015, and they’ve headlined numerous gigs across Sheffield since. The incomparable Teletarts caught up with them to talk live shows, staple dance moves and pre-show rituals… So guys, what’s the foolish month of April got in store for you..? Nathan: The only gig we’re actually allowed to talk about is my 21st birthday. It’s on April 21 at Java Lounge in Hillsborough and the tickets are limited - so you probably won’t be able to come (laughs). Check our Facebook and Twitter for other gigs - as they’re all a secret at the minute. What is your favourite song to play live? Nathan: Anchor - because it’s nice and dancey – everyone likes a good dance. Sam: I’d say Alchemist; which we might start filming for soon – that’s a bit of a secret too. Jake: I’d definitely say Anchor, it’s just fun everyone enjoys it! Okay, so speaking of dancing, what’s your staple dance move? Nathan: It’s kinda’ like a discreet lunge, but it’s not too slow… like you’re actually stretching. It’s a bit
explosive, but you have to be careful because it’s really sexual. It really hits those above the age of 65.
THE TELETARTS
If you were to advise anyone to do anything to do with Ordnance today, what would you advise them to do? Nathan: Buy a t-shirt… and dance around in it! Tight t-shirts or baggy t-shirts? Nathan: Just t-shirts - and lots of them! Every size you can fit in - just buy them all. Do you have any rituals before you go out on stage? No drinking surely? Nathan: We just drink lots of Lemonade - and sniff lots of Olbas Oil! Interesting! Do you have any special techniques for sniffing Olbas Oil? Sam: There’s two techniques! First one is to just shove it straight in and leave it there. And then you do the other hole. Nathan: The second technique is to shove it up one hole and hold your other with your finger to get a really intense hit! Nice! So finally guys, is there anything else you want to say? Jake: Just a big shout out to the cats, sparrows and roast pigeons. Oh, and listen to our single - Urge.

DAM HOT As hard as it is to believe, Damage – who dished out 11 hit singles, 4 Top Ten hits and sold 2.5 million albums worldwide back in t’day - are preparing for their first ever headline tour since forming almost 20 years ago. Originally exploding onto the British music scene in 1997, last year the band appeared on ITV2’s ‘The Big Reunion’, joining 3T, A1, Blue, Five, 911 and 5th Story on a UK arena tour. They now return to the stage in their own right with the ‘Ghetto Romance UK Tour’ - featuring a host of new material alongside their wellknown hits. They take to the O2 Academy stage on April 23.

DRONFEST
The mighty Dronfest is set to be held on Sunday August 2. Located behind the Sheffield FC football ground, on Sheffield Road, Dronfield, confirmed acts include the likes of Andy Fairweather Low, The Low Riders and Doncaster duo Rita Payne. As the frontman and founder member of ‘Amen Corner’, superstar Andy Fairweather Low has enjoyed chart hits such as Gin House Blues and Hello Susie. ‘Doncaster’s finest songwriters’, and former Exposed In Session stars, Rita Payne are sure to provide an eyepopping performance. Eighteen acts will cover two stages (Main Stage and Acoustic Tent) and activities are available for all ages from toddlers to grannies. Early bird tickets announced soon. Don’t miss out! www.dronfest.co.uk for more.
The Unthanks last played in Sheffield at the 2013 DocFest, accompanying a marvellous film about shipbuilding, so tonight was the first chance I’d had to see them in anything other than the received glow of a cinema screen. They pretty much command the attention of a loyal band of folk music followers, keen to hear their take on combining largely Northumbrian folk songs with subtle string and brass arrangements. Sisters Becky and Rachel Unthank have a combined vocal talent which I find totally beguiling. They seem to sing with one blended voice, as perhaps only sisters can, when it suits the songs, but at other times they perfectly complement each other with what seems like effortless harmonies. The musicians that they have gathered into their growing live band, work perfectly and seamlessly together. Tonight’s set mainly draws on the latest album, Mount the Air, but did include some songs from their 2011 project where they covered songs by Robert Wyatt and Antony and The Johnson, and they even sneaked in a cover of King Crimson’s ‘Starless’ to add some light and shade. The show finished with the title track from their new album, a swirling evocative piece, over ten minutes long, which brought the night to an almost dizzying end. The Unthanks provided a gentle but still fascinating and evolving approach to traditional British folk music. Mark Perkins
THE CRIBS
WHERE: THE LEADMILL WHEN: FEBRUARY 22 Despite packing out the main stage on Devonshire Green for Tramlines 2014, The Cribs took on a smaller, but by no means tamer, crowd at The Leadmill on Sunday February 22. Within their 13 year career, the band informed us, “this is the first time we’ve ever headlined Leadmill… That’s a bit fucked up isn’t it? Well, better late than never!” halfway through a knockout set filled with early hits, old favourites and a few newbies. Highlights included a beautifully stripped back ‘It Was Only Love’ as well as ‘Another Number’ – one the crowd had eagerly been chanting the riff for long before the band’s appearance on stage. The heavier ‘Men’s Needs’ and ‘City Of Bugs’ ended the night with a raucous display of arms in the air, crowd surfing and the obligatory
“Yooorrrkkkshiiiree” chants that tend to go along with any gig bringing a successful local(ish) band back to smaller confines. With a colossal back catalogue containing pop punk anthems galore, The Cribs could easily bypass the Steel City for bigger stages and brighter lights. Yet as Ryan Jarman gushes “I don’t like to kiss the crowd’s arse but I did personally ask for Sheffield to be on the tour.” One of the great things about The Cribs is that regardless of top of the bill bookings at festivals and an ever growing fan base, they stick to their roots and choose to play the intimate gigs that they thrive on - and all with the same wonderfully shambolic raw rock and roll energy that they introduced onto the scene just over a decade ago. Dubbed by NME as ‘Brighton’s most exciting band’, rockers Demob Happy are certainly a band making waves on the alternative music scene. We had a chat with band member Matt to hear all about their upcoming gig at The Rocking Chair, their new EP and Columbian knife fighting… Hi Matt! So you’re just about to embark on a pretty intense UK tour, are you looking forward to it? Yeah, absolutely! It’s the biggest tour we’ve ever been on so it’s very exciting. We’re also stopping by a few venues in Europe after the UK dates are done so it’s exciting to travel and see new cities. We’ll be playing a few new tracks which should be good. You’re joining us at The Rocking Chair April 10, are you familiar with Sheffield at all? My brother went to university in Sheffield. I’m 25 now - so I must have been about 16 at the time. I wasn’t old enough to drink, but we still went out anyway. I can’t remember where we went but I remember being very drunk; very drunk and very young! Then we played at the South Sea in Sheffield last year but didn’t have chance to go out. As a band you do a lot of touring, do you have any good stories for us? We took a photographer from Columbia on tour with us last time - now I always recommend taking a Columbian on tour! He was 6’6 and a pretty intimidating force. He ended up being the catalyst of drinking and all the shenanigans that went with it. He taught us some Columbian knife fighting. Columbian knife fighting? Yeah, you tie a t-shirt round your wrist and then have a knife in the other.
That sounds pretty dangerous! Where is your favourite place to play on tour? Well, we’re from Newcastle originally, and we live in Brighton now, so it’s always nice going back to Newcastle and seeing all our friends and family. When we last played in Sheffield the promotor was a bit naff so basically no one knew we were playing. There were only a few people who came and this one lad had travelled miles to come and see us- so he was pretty cool. That one dedicated fan really made the night! You’ve received many high praises from media giants such as NME, The Guardian, Radio 1 and Q, how does that feel? Amazing, man. Really really surreal. Being played on Zane Lowe’s show was really nice, you really feel like you’re getting somewhere when Zane Lowe plugs one of your tracks! But yeah, all the praise has been really surreal, but in a good way! One mag dubbed you as ‘Royal Blood’s slightly moodier brother’, thoughts? That’s one of the nicer comparisons! Usually Royal Blood get shot down a bit, I think we both get compared because we’re both from Brighton. In addition to all the touring, you’ve also
got a brand-spanking-new EP ‘Young and Numb’ out later this year. What can you tell us about it? Well the EP is made up of our new title track and another couple of tracks due out April this year. It stemmed from a recording session we had in Wales. We stayed in this cottage - it’s actually the cottage in the video for Young and Numb. There’s no phone signal, no internet, no distractions so we can concentrate fully on the song writing. So we took all our equipment and began jamming and it turned out good enough to record. Are you hitting any festivals this summer? We’re going to be hitting a couple of smaller ones. There’s this little festival in Bulgaria that we’re playing, we know the dudes who run it - it’s in the mountains and only about 500 people attend. You’re a band certainly on the rise, where do you see Demob Happy this time next year? Hopefully starting to do big festivals! Every year we say we’re either going to play or go to one but never save enough money. So yeah, 2016 is going to be the year of festivals! Demob Happy hit The Rocking Chair April 10. ‘Duets: Re-Working The Catalogue’ features everyone from Natalie Cole to Mark Knopfler to Michael Buble and beyond. We grabbed an exclusive chat with the notoriously media shy singer/songwriter to talk more about it. So, where did you get the idea from for this whole project? The idea’s been around for years, it’s what I’d call a side project. I’ve done duets before, several with John Lee Hooker,, a couple with Tom Jones, Ray Charles, Carl Perkins, Bobby Bland, Lonnie Donagan, Georgie Fame… How did you choose the guests? With great difficultly. I had to leave a lot of people out because of the time factor. It started back in October 2013. I wanted Bobby Womack, he’d been one of the first people on my list for many years. Bobby, Mavis Staples and Natalie Cole were playing the Blues Festival in London, and so was I – so it made sense to get them during that. Those three kind of kicked it off for me. It was much harder to get the rest because of calendars. Was it important to have people face to face with you in the studio? Absolutely, yes. Whenever possible you want to get that. The George Benson track I did live with his band in the studio because I wanted to do something with his lot rather than mine for a change. You just have to work with what’s available at the time. Luckily, he was in London, his band was there, so it worked out.
The man, the myth, the leg-end – Van Morrison is back with a new album… and he’s bought a few friends along for the ride! Interview: Clive Davis What was it like making a shortlist of your songs? It must have been incredibly difficult. Yeah, it was very difficult. Some of them picked their own songs, or I made suggestions and they said that was fine. Like Bobby Womack, I sent him that track, he said, ‘yeah I like the song I can do that’. Other ones had songs in mind, like Mick Hucknall, who wanted to do Streets of Arklow - he specifically picked that song. Mark Knopfler picked his song. Of course, the PJ Proby one is pretty obvious. I’d recorded that song in the early 2000s - so that was an easy one. I guess it could’ve been a double album then. You’ve got plenty of great songs… It could’ve been a double album - but I had to cut it off at some point. The George Benson track, ‘Higher Than The World’, is one track which sounds radically different to the original… Yeah, probably because his band put a different spin on it. More funky. I really like it.
You’ve always been a fairly fast worker and not lingered for too long though… I’m from the John Lee Hooker school of ‘you get in, you get out’ kind of thing. George Benson did a great couple of takes we were out of there having lunch by 3pm. 108 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk
You’ve got Georgie Fame on the album too. It’s great to see him back. It’s good to have an old mate riding shotgun. He’s great. Again, he knows what to do, and he does it. He’s Clive to me. Just a non de plume. Come to think of it, I’m not really called Van, either. That’s a phony name for a start. And Michael Buble, another album highlight… He’s good! He’s a big fan of yours too. Yeah, he’s recorded a couple of my songs, and mentions me quite a bit. He’s great, I like him. You used his band on that particular track too… Yeah - it’s a BIG band. What do you think of his music generally? The fact that he’s reaching this immense audience with songs from the big band era? I think it’s great that someone’s doing that. There’s not many people doing it apart from Harry Connick Jnr - and he’s not doing that much. Buble is out there, promoting himself – he’s out there all the time non-stop.

The last track, I think that’s my favourite actually, with Taj Mahal. The way it fades with you guys laughing... We recorded it one afternoon in a hotel. He just came over to hang out for a couple of days. He was in Europe on the way back to the States… When did you first meet Taj? Around the 70s, actually. We were playing a gig together. I think it was Fillmore West in San Francisco. I was trying to get out of the music business - but Bill Graham kept pressurising me to do gigs. I said to him, ‘I want to retire from performing’. He said, ‘Why don’t you do one more gig before you retire?’ Taj opened then I went on. The lights were so bright - even with dark glasses on I couldn’t see. It was all sort of psychedelic lighting, it was blinding me. I said ‘I can’t do this’, and I was going to go off. Taj came on stage, he took the microphone and said: ‘Can you shut the f*cking lights off?’ So they did it - because this guy’s about 6’6”. That was when I first met him. You do a lot of intimate gigs. I guess you don’t have to play these small shows, but there’s something that clearly appeals to you about them… They’ve always appealed to me. Even when I was in America doing big gigs, I still did small clubs as well. I’ve always done it. I have to. For me, it’s like breathing. Something I need to do. It’s playing and singing rather than performing. It’s more direct and it’s more about communication. R&B has become a very different animal now. How do you feel about it? Terrible. I can’t relate to it now. What they call R&B - it doesn’t have any rhythm to it. It doesn’t have any blues. To me, it is very unrhythmic. It’s very robotical. But it’s odd that it’s become this all conquering phenomenon… Well, that’s what happens. The words take on different meanings after a while. It’s like the word spiritual. What does that mean? It could mean anything now. Like, a hundred years ago, that meant mediums and séances or something. Then it meant something else later on, then there’s a new age version of it - so you don’t know what these words mean anymore. In fact, it doesn’t mean very much because it’s overused - so you have to find something else. It’s like soul. I don’t know what that is now. To me, soul was like Ray Charles,
Factoids:
Van’s real name is George Ivan Morrison. He rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them. His solo career began under the pop-hit oriented guidance of Bert Berns - with the release of the single ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ in 1967. Morrison has received six Grammy Awards, the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. On October 13, 2014, Morrison received his fifth BMI Million-Air Award for 11 million radio plays of the song Brown Eyed Girl making it one of the Top 10 Songs of all time on US radio and television. Morrison has also received Million-Air awards for Have I Told You Lately.

Sam Cooke, Bobby Bland, Solomon Burke, Bobby Womack. But what is it now? It’s just a word - it can mean anything. What’s jazz? Some of the stuff that they claim is jazz, I don’t know what it is. blues, also. lues is like Junior Wells and Buddy Guy in a club live. That was the blues. Sob, do you feel optimistic or pessimistic about the way the blues and jazz traditions are going...? Well, I just feel like you know what you know and you just get on with it. I don’t really know if there’s any tradition anymore. I was lucky to meet, work and hang out with all these amazing people. I remember the first time I saw Jimmy Witherspoon play in London - it was unbelievable - that was like a spiritual experience, for want of a better word. I met him, it was like ‘65 or something, then we hung out at the bar just like normal people. I was lucky to meet these people, get to know them, hang out with them, learn things and observe stuff.

Games That Will Probably Never Happen
Half-Life 3
Perhaps one of the most demanded sequels of all time, Half-Life 3 has been on gamers’ wishlists for at least 10 years now. Half-Life 1 and 2 were, and still are, fantastic first person shooters, so if after so much waiting an actual sequel is announced, I imagine the hype and high expectations would make Half-Life 3 a massive disappointment. Valve haven’t given any real announcement of the game, however over the last decade, various hints and rumours have teased us. Without any official say, the chances of Gordon Freeman swinging his crow bar around once again are very low.
Crash Bandicoot Reboot
After The Wrath of Cortex back in 2001, it’s safe to say Crash Bandicoot has gone way downhill. What the furry little bugger needs is a kick up the backside into the style of gameplay that made the original games so fun and engaging to play. None of this Mind Over Mutant business. However, the sad truth is that it’s incredibly unlikely we’ll ever see a Crash reboot. Creators Naughty Dog aren’t entirely put off by the idea, but Activision officially own Crash Bandicoot now, so there’s all sorts of complications to consider. Shame, really.

Quake 5
In 2011, lead programmer of Quake, John Carmack, spoke on the possibility of a Quake 5, saying “We are least tossing around the possibilities of going back to the bizarre, mixed up Cthulhu-ish Quake 1 world and rebooting that direction.” Looks promising right? That was 4 years ago we haven’t heard anything since. id Software are hard at work on Doom 4 - and rightly so. The last official Quake was Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and let’s be honest - it didn’t really feel like a real Quake game. Quake 5 would be a beautiful thing, but with no indication of it ever happening
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Whilst I would like a remake, I firmly believe Square Enix have no interest in bringing back Cloud Strife and his massive spiky hair. Ever. When you think of the amount of projects the company has underway at any given moment, do you really think there’s enough time to create an entire remake on one of the most beloved games of all time? This is a game that has been fanboy’d over since its release back in 1997, so the expectations of a full-blown remake would be off the radar. If Square Enix had nothing to do, I think they’d consider this very seriously. Until that moment, don’t get your hopes up.

This year, the fabulous Showroom Cinema celebrates its 20th anniversary. First opening as a two screen cinema, the Showroom has been entertaining audiences from Sheffield and South Yorkshire since 1995. Since then, two further screens, as well as a café and bar, have been added inside the 1930s art deco building which was formerly host to a car dealership. Now, the Showroom is looking
to raise £250,000 for a thorough refurbishment. “As a registered charity we depend on the public to keep going,” Chief Executive Ian Wild said. “And on our 20th birthday, the best present we can hope for is that everyone will get behind us and help us make our cinema even more special for the thousands of people who visit us each year.” The refurbishment plan includes the replacement of cinema seats
and carpets, while the foyer will be given a stylish redesign. In addition, both toilets and technical equipment such as lighting will be improved. Money will be raised through online monthly donations, text donations, or customers may choose to donate an extra pound when buying tickets at the box office. The cinema will also raise money by selling merchandise and an anniversary beer, hosting special

Interview:
Laura Garner.
Hi Dean, Tell us about ‘Tears in the Dust’? ‘Tears in the Dust’ is a new Indie feature film from Steve Call Productions. I play the lead role of Trevor Wallis, a very successful salesman working for a medium software company, and one day his life changes forever. He finds out that his main boss has been cheating the company and his business partner out of millions. The company is closing and the boss Andrew has gone missing. Trevor is owed hundreds of thousands of pounds in wages and he totally loses the plot. Things don’t turn out too well for Trevor, losing his job, his wife and dignity. He’s down and out on the streets, constantly drunk and things are about to get worse for him. Tell us about your background that led you to being in the film… I landed a supporting role playing a character called Chris in a feature film called ‘A Total Thug Up’. The director was Steve Call and he liked my passion and commitment so he gave me the lead role in this latest film. Steve is a great director and helps bring out the best in you as an actor. I was drawn to the role of Trevor straight away because he’s a character we can all relate to. We shot the ‘Tears’ teaser trailer
last year and since then the support for the film just keeps growing and growing. We start shooting in May and I know it’s going to be a great time on set - even if the story is very dark and depressing at times. When and how did you first decide you wanted to go into films? I began acting in 2012 when I played a zombie in an indie horror film. I enjoyed that so much and really got the acting bug. After that I worked on a number of projects and started having acting lessons at The Yorkshire School of Acting, studying the various techniques of acting that apply more directly to screen acting. Last year I had a small speaking role on BBC1’s ‘In The Club’ working with Will Mellor. I’d love to do more TV work but I feel truly blessed that I’m playing a role like Trevor Wallis in ‘Tears in the Dust’. So you’re Yorkshire born and bred - how does it feel to represent us in the acting world? Awesome! I’m very proud to represent the region. I’m also over the moon that my first lead in a feature film is in a Yorkshire film with a Yorkshire director.
What advice would you give to aspiring, young actors? First of all, can I just say I started acting in my 40s - so this advice is for anyone who wants to become an actor. You need to be really passionate and patient about it - because you find yourself in and out of work all the time. You need to ask yourself how much you really want this kind of work and how much you’re willing to sacrifice for it. If you really want to be an actor, just go for it and follow your dream! If you could’ve had any role in any movie, what would it have been? I’m a huge Clint Eastwood fan, I’ve watched all his great Westerns many times with my Dad, so I’d have to say ‘The Man With No Name’, the character portrayed by Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone’s “Dollars Trilogy” of Spaghetti Western films. He’s a man of few words and lets his facial expressions and body language do the talking on screen. You can say a lot with your actions, eyes and body. Actions really do speak louder than words! Finally, what else is in the pipeline for you? I’m working on another film after ‘Tears in the Dust’ but can’t say too much about it at the moment. Plus, I’m looking for acting work all the time - so you never know what’s around the corner. I’m just enjoying the journey so far!
‘Tears in the Dust’ is expected to be released December 2016. Head to www.facebook.com/ TearsintheDust for the trailer and more information.

TS ABOUT H IS CHA L AT HE E
A straight talking man from Sheffield, Tony Pitts’ down-toearth attitude belies his impressive and varied career. Having worked in film, TV, radio and theatre as an actor, writer and director, he’s a seasoned professional. His latest film, Hyena, sees him star alongside a roster of fantastic British actors in a tale of a pack of corrupt police officers on the brink of destruction. “It’s about power,” says Tony. “They’ve been extorting and selling drugs for years and years. We find them just before the fall, we get to the point where they feel untouchable – nobody is.” Pitts’ involvement in Hyena began when he was sent writerdirector Gerard Johnson’s debut feature film, Tony. “It was an extraordinarily, beautifully shot film. So then I went in to meet them.” Tony recognised his friends and trusted coperformers, including the likes of Peter Ferdinando (Starred Up), Stephen Graham (This Is England), ), and Neil Maskell (Utopia). ). It was the opportunity to work alongside this “tribe” that convinced Tony Hyena was an interesting project. Reluctant to discuss the acting process, Tony states that he is wary of actors who do share the details of their methods. “I’m not really interested. If I have a plumber round, I don’t want to know his theory on plumbing, I love the moment of invention. I’m not so keen on repetition, I usually think I’m better on a first take than a third. That’s what I enjoy, the spark, that’s the adrenaline.” With a more than 30 year long career behind him, Tony’s instincts clearly haven’t led him astray so far. Seemingly appearing from nowhere in 1981, Tony was working as a truck mechanic in Sheffield when Ken Loach came to Stannington College looking to cast extras for Looks and Smiles. Hyena is showing in cinemas nationwide now. 120 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk
“He asked us how we would react if somebody stole our moped. I think it’s fair to say that I reacted with the degree of realism that they wanted.” Loach was so impressed with Tony that he soon gave him a lead role in Looks and Smiles. “I was literally a truck mechanic one Monday, and then started shooting the following Monday.” Tony went on to work in theatre, before being cast as Archie Brooks in Emmerdale in 1983. The exposure to such a massive audience was “a big gear change” for Tony. “I was a kid,” he says. “At that age you don’t really know who you are and what you’re about, I think you do well to go through that and survive it.” Tony’s time on Emmerdale also gave him the opportunity to work on other projects (Archie Brooks was eventually killed off in the infamous plane crash, in 1993). After leaving Emmerdale, he didn’t work in TV for two years. “In the meantime, I’d always written, so those two years turned out to be really productive. I just churned out cupboards of stuff. Fortunately, some of it is now getting made.” Tony’s writing has mostly been for radio. He’s won awards for his radio play On It and has three series of a show called Shedtown under his belt. “It’s fantastic. I’ve got control there. I write direct and perform. It’s a tenth of the money but a thousand times the control, there’s no filter. I like the purity of radio.” Currently working on his next project, which Tony says is about male anger, Monster stars himself and Neil Maskell. Speaking on the split between acting and writing in his career, Tony concludes: “I’m a writer-performer. Today I’m a writer because I’m writing, but next week I’m back on set for My Mad Fat Diary, Diary so I’ll be an actor. I’m whatever I’m doing on that day. I need both.”

A NEW SEASON FOR SHEFFIELD THEATRES Two major classic plays and a regional première are amongst the new season of work announced by Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director, Daniel Evan. There’s Tamara Harvey’s production of Pride and Prejudice showing this summer, followed by the production of Lucy Prebble’s The Effect, as well the co-production of Slung Low of Camelot: The Shining City by Sheffield People’s Theatre. Freddie Fox will be making his Sheffield Theatres debut in September as the lead in Romeo and Juliet, directed by Jonathan Humphreys, who returns following his former productions of Boeing Boeing, The Village Bike and Happy Days. On top of that, Charlotte Gwinner has lined up a treat, directing the regional première of Deborah Bruce’s The Distance. Alongside Sheffield Theatres’ own productions, the Crucible, Lyceum and Studio welcome a wide variety of the best productions touring the UK.
Jason Donovan… Jason Donovan stars in The King’s Speech as speech therapist Lionel Logue, hitting the Lyceum Theatre from April 13-18. We caught up with him for a quick chat.

You recently made an appearance in the Eastenders’ tribute to Neighbours’ 30th Anniversary – did it feel strange returning to the soap screen as yourself? Not at all, it was just really good fun to do it as myself and celebrate the anniversary. What do you find the most challenging about the role of Lionel Logue? It was just a great opportunity to delve into and it was different from all the other roles I’ve been in - as nobody’s seen me in this light before. It’s a wonderful play to take part in and the film is fantastic; the story behind it is just remarkable. What’s the most nerve-racking or craziest thing you’ve ever had to do on stage? Performing requires a lot of nerves, so I’d definitely say every time before I go on stage is nerve-racking, but the craziest thing I’ve ever had to do is wear the most outrageous wacky costumes from the musical Priscilla.
NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: THE HARD PROBLEM
You’ve been in many well-known West End plays - what’s your favourite thing about being a part of a production? The people, of course, as well as the audience and when rehearsals begin because it’s the most exciting part to begin something new and fresh.
WHERE: CURZON & SHOWROOM CINEMAS WHEN: APRIL 16
What do you do to prepare before the big opening night? Is there any pressure? You just have to remain calm, you know? You’ve just got to believe in all the hard work you’ve done for it and eat well. It’s just like being an athlete. What made you want to go into the theatre business? I just always wanted to be an entertainer, a performer. I get a buzz from entertaining people, a natural high. I love it. Although my parents were in the business, I also got the grasp. Read the full interview online at www.exposedmagazine.co.uk. Catch The King’s Speech at the Lyceum Theatre Sheffield from April 13-18. Tickets from £23.50. See www. sheffieldtheatres.co.uk for more.
Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard, of Shakespeare in Love fame, returns with new production The Hard Problem. An absorbing psychological thriller which aims to get the audience questioning the very fabric of their lives. Hilary is a young psychology researcher at a brainscience institute, battling both personal sorrows and a troubling question at work: if there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? The Hard Problem is where psychology and biology meet. This enthralling production will be broadcast live to cinemas nationwide, and will be shown at The Curzon and The Showroom cinemas in Sheffield. £18.50 // ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk

For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk You may recognise Faye Tozer as being part of 90’s pop phenomenon Steps. Fast forward to 2015 and Faye is making waves in theatre, having already starred in acclaimed productions of Me and My Girl, Tell Me on a Sunday and Dial M for Murder. We had a chat about her latest venture 69 Shades of Black, a tongue-in-cheek alternative to 50 Shades of Grey, hitting Sheffield City Hall June 4. Hi Faye! First things first, what made you want to get involved with 69 Shades of Black? Good question! Well it first came about last October when I was looking for a new venture. For the last few months I’d been playing a lot of more serious roles. I was looking to get involved in something more comedic, and then the opportunity to get involved in 69 Shades of Black came along. It was perfect timing as well with the film!
Exposed Meets Faye Tozer. Words: Emily Beaumont. Tell us a bit about your character, Christina Black. She’s a little similar to Christian Grey. It’s a complete twist on the franchise. My character Christina is very domineering, she likes control and to get what she wants. But the play is a bit more light and silly, more like an adult panto. We want people to squirm but also laugh! Did you read the Fifty Shades of Grey books? I did. I first read them during the Steps reunion tour in 2011. Me and Lisa would often read the rudest bits out loud to embarrass all the guys! The story was good, the characters were good, but the sex bits were a little repetitive. Did you read the books? I read the first one. I was a little embarrassed whipping it out on the train though… I think a lot of women felt that way! Ours is a bit more light-hearted, perfect for a girls night out or hen party. The male character William Shight is often left torn between his good and naughty conscience; Gabriel and Gideon. Which part of your conscience are you led by? Well for me, because of Steps and now I’m a mother probably more of the good conscience. I’m a bit boring! However when I’m out with the girls I can be a bit of a bad girl! The tour of 69 Shades of Black is quite an intensive one. What is the best and
worst thing about working away? It’s mostly a different venue each night - all very organised, I have my two little suitcases and get driven to the venues and hotels. I haven’t had to sort anything myself! With the tour we’re going to a lot of smaller venues in smaller towns so those who can’t always get into the city can come and watch. I’ll be at the stage doors doing signings! The worst thing is obviously being away from family, but with this tour I’ll be home at some point every week so it won’t be too bad. So 69 Shades of Black is stopping by Sheffield June 4, I hear you’re familiar with the city? Yes I’ve been to Sheffield many a time! We came to the arena a few times with Steps, and I was recently in a couple of productions here. I’ve got a little apartment which I like to stay in while I’m in Sheffield. I’ll only be here for one night though this time. You mentioned Steps earlier, and with the band you achieved phenomenal success - what would you say was your greatest achievement with Steps? I’ve got to say the BRIT award we won
was definitely one of our proudest achievements. We won Best Live Act in 2000 and it was amazing and such an honour. We’re all very blessed really; we were very successful at the time and were then lucky enough to be successful with our reunion as well. Speaking of which, are there any plans for another reunion? It’s not out the question. We’ve got to do it at least one more time before we’re all too old! We do talk about it often, it’s just a bit difficult right now as we’re all doing our own thing, we have kids and we’re based all over the world. Which do you prefer: music or theatre? They’re so different. I would say theatre is probably my personal favourite, it’s something that’s always been near and dear to my heart and I find it very satisfying. But I loved Steps and owe my career to it, so it’s maybe a tie! After the show has finished touring, what’s next for you? I’ll be taking the Summer off and spending the holidays with my little boy. It’s definitely time for some mummy time!
