Crikey, when Plug host a party, they don’t do things by halves. Looky here – they only went and blagged Sir Jarvis Cocker for their ninth birthday shindig recently. Mr Cocker, along with Pulp bassist Steve Mackey and legendary Sheff decks maestro The DJ Pipes, made up The Desperate Sound System - who provided 50% of the entertainment on the night. The other half – blinkin’ 2manydjs – who served up a heady dose of mismatched marvelousness. If this is how they celebrate nine years, chuff knows what they’ll be doing for their 10th – but we can’t wait to find out. www.the-plug.com. Charity Champ

Three-time world squash champion, Nick Matthew, has been unveiled as the new patron of The Children’s Hospital Charity in Sheffield. The proud Sheffielder is thrilled to be the joining the team - after supporting the charity as a fundraiser and one of the faces of Team Theo – the charity’s squad of supporters. He’ll now act as an ambassador for the cause – joining a team of patrons that includes sporting greats like Michael Vaughan, James Toseland and Jessica Ennis-Hill. The former High Storrs pupil said: “The hospital is an amazing place - and the staff do so much for so many children in Sheffield and the surrounding areas. It also has strong links to local sport through brilliant sporting fundraising events like Team Theo.” Rebecca Staden, fundraising manager at The Children’s Hospital Charity, added: “Nick has been an incredible support to the Charity, we are so thrilled that he is now officially on board as a patron so he can be an ambassador for us and help Make it Better for our children.” He joins the charity in the middle of its biggest campaign to date – the Make it Better appeal which aims to raise £10m regionally by 2016. The money will help transform the hospital into a world class facility to match the world class care received. For more on the appeal, visit www.tchc.org.uk/ our-make-it-better-appeal.

Be Safe

With over 50,000 students in Sheffield, the streets are noticeably busier - which means more cars, more pedestrians… and the potential for more accidents. A lot of accidents take place at night - with hotspots such as West Street and Division Street seeing pedestrians stumbling in the street after a few too many. The solution? Be aware, be careful and be a safe pedestrian! Check out the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership which aims to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured across the roads of the county.

SCORPIO Oct 23 – Nov 21

A shifty looking bloke down the pub will tell you that he knows a guy who’s perfected a potion which grants the drinker eternal life. As a risk-taking Scorpio, you decide to give it a go, and meet up with a crazy looking scientist at his lab in Darnall. After downing a concoction of what tastes a bit like Bovril, Nando’s chilli sauce and marzipan, the scientist whips off a face mask and it’s only Richard bleedin’ Hammond! He starts to giggle like a little girl and squeals that you’ve been “Hammiliated” – the title of his new hidden camera show. After realising you’ve been done up like a kipper, you slope home and spend the rest of the day on the bog. But you’ve got to try these things, though… right? AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 A total lunar eclipse will occur at some point during the month; this will cause all Aquarian men to unexpectedly get a massive stonk on for the day. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Uranus *snigger* is in retrograde this month; unfortunately for Pisceans, this means they will develop a strange penchant for scratching their backside and belching loudly when in the company of others. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 November is a great month to re-examine your main priorities: can you rap ‘Gangster’s Paradise’ in its entirety yet? When was the last time you watched ‘A Bugs Life?’ How’s your Christopher Walken impression coming along? TAURUS April 20 - May 20 Just turn around and

wipe it! GEMINI May 21 - June 20 Calling your boss “jerkyjerk face” under your breath is not the way to solve your problems at work. Instead, the next time he talks down to you, flying rugby tackle him to the ground and shout “HOO-AH!” in his face. CANCER June 21 - July 22 I know that patience and loyalty are good and virtuous traits. But, sometimes, I just think you need to grow a pair. LEO July 23 - Aug 22 This month, Paddy McGuinness will appear inside your head and begin narrating your daily life. It will eventually drive you insane as you begin shouting out unfunny obscenities such as “LET THE MILK… SEE THE COFFEE!”

VIRGO Aug 23 - Sep 22 After deeming them a significant threat to the general public, your testicles are placed on the CIA’s ‘most wanted’ list. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 A Libra’s sex life is just like eating curry: hot, spicy… and the cause of excessive flatulence. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 You can be anything you want to be if you have enough desire - but it’s a lot easier if your parents are stinking rich. CAPRICORN Dec 22 – Jan 19 If all else fails, head to The Johnson Lounge. The Johnson Lounge will make you happy. The Johnson Lounge makes EVERYONE happy.

LOCAL HERO

RIP RICHARD RICE

Richard inspired affection in everyone who knew him. He made us smile, laugh and feel good about life; everybody had a soft spot for Richard. He was charming and charismatic, he loved his music, his friends and most of all his family - who must feel so proud of raising such a genuine and generous young man. Richard was involved in the Sheffield music scene for the last ten years, playing with bands such as Gas Club, Park Brigade and Mabel Love; a band he fronted and toured with across the U.K. This is our tribute to Richard Rice, always in our hearts, never forgotten.

We’ve all been there, after a few bevvies and a long overdue catch up, you and your mates act like the only people in the pub and carry on whatever bonkers, bizarre, embarrassing or downright nasty conversation you’ve been having. But beware, the Exposed barflies are on the wall - and have been listening to your every word. Overheard in Sheffield this week… “It freaked me out, she were able to tell me whether I needed the toilet or not, just by… checking”. “I’ve done everything, me. I’ve even licked a nun”. “We were just lying in bed and, honest to god, if he stuck his tongue any further…” “I was like ‘everything ISN’T f*cking awesome – and I f*cking hate Lego!’ W*nker.” “Michael Vaughn was a fox on the box, I can’t believe they don’t get the feet in the camera.”

BLACK BOX PRODUCTIONS Black Box Productions are behind some of the most brilliant events happening in the city. We caught up with the brains behind the brand, Jennie and John, to find out more. For the uninitiated, can you give us a brief overview of Black Box Productions..? Jennie: Black Box Productions is a creative partnership between myself, a dancer and choreographer, and musician and designer John Slater. Our vision is to work with local artists from all backgrounds to produce extraordinary experiences and events. John: Our inspiration and ideas have come from our own experiences and we both believe that creative arts should not be restricted behind the closed doors of a theatre. Instead, we strive to put on shows in unusual places such as department stores, galleries, colleges, cafes, and in the street. Reaching out and taking performance arts to the people. Why is Black Box so important for Sheffield and the local community? John: Firstly, because it aims to make performance arts more accessible and affordable for the people of Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Secondly, through our collaboration with fellow performers we hope to encourage others artists talents’ and their own ventures. Thirdly, we want to work with people who wouldn’t normally consider performing or wouldn’t know how to get involved with the arts. We’re currently working with a minority group in Sheffield in collaboration with the CRISIS charity - alongside homeless and vulnerable adults in the production and performance of our Christmas cabaret show at the Copthorne Hotel.

And what else is on the horizon? Tons! We’ve got School sports Day, where we’re organising a themed family event for the Funny Brains charity at Graves Park, which includes all the sports games that you remember fondly from your childhood. Also, Twinkling Like Stars - a social project which celebrates Sheffield and seven local stars who are strongly connected to one of Sheffield’s seven hills and are over 60 years of age. Our stars include Frank White, Bobby Knutt, Brendan Ingle, George Tew, Mary Povey and Andrea King. The project comprises of a photographic exhibition in the Winter Garden and two free celebration evenings with live music, comedy and poetry - 7th of November at Couch cafe on Campo Lane and 5th of December at Hagglers Corner Looking further ahead, we’ve got The 1930’s Christmas Berlin Diary. This is the autobiographical story of local fictional performer Warren Peace and tells of his time spent in 1930’s Berlin. This sell out interactive theatre show returns to Sheffield on the 11th of December. All proceeds will go to CRISIS. We both have an endless supply of creative ideas and for 2014/2015 we’ll be working on our first documentary which will hopefully be previewed at next year’s Doc/Fest. On top of that we’ve a charity comedy evening and collaborations with Barbara Bentley and Sheffield’s Open Door Theatre Company for Lite Nights and A Christmas Carol.

In need of a little love advice? Has the fizz gone out of your banger? Let the lord of love enter your soul... Dear SP, The other week, my teenage son forgot to delete the browsing history on his laptop before I used it to browse for car insurance. I was very shocked by the number of naughty sites he has been visiting and the sheer amount of time he must spend downloading this filth. He needs a stern talking to, but I’m a bit awkward when it comes to this sort of thing; do I go in all guns blazing or should I adopt a more understanding approach? Timothy, Dore

Om Point

Private student accommodation company Omnia Space have launched a brand new cutting-edge building - Portobello Point. Designed by award winning architectural company Coda Studios, a fantastic feature of Portobello Point is its Green Roof. The Green Roof is a new idea to create environmentally friendly cities – featuring stunning gardens on the top of buildings. Advantages of Green Roofs are not just a strategy to beautify the building, but they also have a variety of environmental advantages – contributing to landfill diversion, water management, moderation of heat and improving air quality. Offering 3-6 bedroom apartments, each floor is themed (think everything from Iron Maiden to Hot To Trot) – plus, all the apartments feature exclusive bespoke furniture. In addition to this, Portobello Point also has plenty of little extras; all rooms are en-suite with double beds and all kitchens are fully equipped. Occupants can also keep fit with the on-site gym and be entertained via Sky TV and broadband points. The luxury accommodation rooms are priced from £120 a week and there are still a few rooms remaining for academic year 2014/15.

30% - So, we knocked down a state of the art sports venue a year ago to build… a state of the art sports venue. Tha what? 25% - Ah, the smell of Lynx mingled with sexual desperation. The students are back.

Well, Timmy, if you want my honest opinion, you should zip it and let your teenage son get on with… well, being a teenager. Every young male goes through those years of adolescence where life is something that sort of happens around frequent and prolonged periods of jackin’ the beanstalk. Now, Tim, I can’t help but feel that the indignation at your son’s extra-curricular activities comes with a touch of jealously at the fact that you didn’t have a web browser when you were a teen. I’m sure that you, like me, had to make do with just a brittle paged Playboy stashed in the local park bush as a youngster. Our tiny minds (and penises), once content with a brief glimpse of cleavage, would have exploded with glee if we could access the online empire of rumpy pumpy which is today’s internet. So, let your lad do what he’s gotta do, and if he’s still contributing towards Dr Kleenex’s pension at the same rate in 10 years, then you can have a chat and tell him to start chasing some real flange. PEAK SIGNAL 2 NOISE

Sheffield’s known as a pioneer music city - but what’s less celebrated is its true musical underground: cutting-edge experimental music and arts, avant-garde approaches that challenge the status quo. Peak Signal 2 Noise will help give back a voice to the true alternatives in Sheffield, enabling the scene to articulate itself effectively alongside the already well-heard musical mainstream. INSTAGRAMMER OF THE MONTH:

Handsworth Sword Dancers

1870. The year that witnessed the death of Charles Dickens, the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War and the first international football match (England vs Scotland - we won 1-0!). Meanwhile, the strapping blokes of Yorkshire were working on a little history themselves, with the birth of the Longsword Dance - a Yorkshire tradition featuring 6-8 men performing together in a circle with sharp pointy things. The dance normally finishes with the making and displaying of the sword lock; very masculine!

Back to 2014, and the Longsword Dance is alive and thriving in our Steel City. In the suburbs of Sheffield is Handsworth, the home of one of the last remaining Sword Dancing teams. The group still perform the traditional dance, complete with dragoon-type uniforms and long steel swords. The Handsworth Sword Dancers mainly perform around Christmas and at special functions, but still practice and perform together weekly at their HQ. Sword dancers, we salute you.

JOE FOOD GETS REYT UPSET ABAHT SUMMAT

a busy Misery. Who are they? Where do they come from? And more importantly, what do they do? I’m talking about busy people. For clarity, I’m not talking about the normal busy people; I, like many others, spend most of the working week under a cloud of stress, hurriedly scuttling from place to place until Friday shows it’s beautiful, merciful face. Busy is fine. I’m talking about the usually besuited, permanently stressed looking people who dash frantically around town centres clutching Starbucks coffees and yammering unintelligibly into iPhones. Example: just the other day, I was waiting at a busy crossroads for the lights to change, when some anxious looking businesswoman sprinted in front of me… BEFORE THE GREEN MAN FLASHED. What on Earth was going on in her life that was so unbelievably, preposterously, absurdly important that she simply couldn’t wait another 0.8 seconds for the green man to come on? The end result – me still stood on the other side of the crossing feeling fairly useless and wondering why my time isn’t quite as important as hers. However, I’ve been thinking about this, and I have a hunch that this sort of behaviour is a psychological issue for some people. Unprecedented levels of impatience and busyness are rife in today’s society. In fact, I can reel off a few examples for you right now...

1) BUSY PUB PERSON

You’re out for a drink in the local, and the bar is moderately busy. But it’s fine as you are a mere five minutes of patience away from some tasty alcoholic nectar. Try telling that to the middle aged bellend in a Ralph Lauren shirt, who’s sweating profusely and thrusting a wad of notes towards the bar over the heads of the patiently waiting customers. Of course, his rudeness results in the bar staff taking longer to serve him - and usually he’ll waste more valuable drinking time in storming off and finding a “better” pub.

2) BUSY TRAIN PERSON

You’re waiting for the doors to open at the end of a long train commute home after work. After a while, the doors are released and the people waiting to get on take a step back so you can continue undisturbed on your voyage to freedom. But, busy train person has other ideas – pushing straight

past as you attempt to exit and tutting loudly. Bellend.

3)BUSY WALKING PERSON

You’re walking down the path and a busy person is coming the other way – showing no indication of moving aside. Sensing that they’re evidently much busier than you’ll ever be, you politely move out of their way. Do busy people acknowledge your act of kindness? Do they balls. If you’re lucky, they might raise their eyebrows in your direction before returning to their phone call. Busy people of the world, I ask you politely to stop being so goddamn busy. If everybody in the world ran around like corporate robot headless chickens, we’d all be f*cked. This country was built on patient people; it took Charles Darwin twenty years to finish On the Origin of Species, and it took nine years for Kate Bush to record Aerial - so just take a chill pill, yeah?

Happening all over the city centre, expect everything from stormtroopers and daleks to wizards and witches – and loads more besides.

For The Record

Sheffield-born artist Pete McKee makes a triumphant return to the Steel City this November - with a northern tour of his hugely successful exhibition ‘Thud, Crackle, Pop!’. Following its launch at Paul Smith’s London space, TCP arrives in Sheffield on November 22 and will run until December 23 at Pete’s A Month Of Sundays store. The exhibition explores the culture surrounding the love of record collecting - those who buy it, sell it, play it and create it. Set in a gallery space reimagined as a vintage record store, McKee invites you to look through the works as you would ‘dig’ through the racks.

START ME UP

The School For Creative Startups programme is coming to The Sheffield College following massive success in London. It’s a chance for budding entrepreneurs to get their big ideas out there - as well as offering the opportunity for one to one guidance with professionals. Chloe Martin caught up with Frankie Snobel who undertook the programme and now operates a successful, growing business, in the form of cocktail case company Tipplesworth.

Where did your idea for Tipplesworth stem from? I’m originally from Canada and was working in cocktail bars for eight years. I then travelled over to London to do journalism. I’ve always been enthusiastic and passionate about cocktail making and, after receiving rubbish presents from friends at Christmas times, it gave me inspiration to start a cocktail travel case. What skills do you feel you’ve gained from the programme? I’ve learnt that, even if you have an idea, the programme helps you to take things further and gives you the discipline that you need - especially what I needed at the time. They give you homework, which ultimately makes you do the work, and the feedback they give you at each of the classes, for me, has changed my business. There’s also an event at the end of the programme where you can meet investors

Exposed gets the lowdown on The School For Creative Startups.

- it’s a chance for everyone to showcase their work, and talk to potential buyers, it’s a great experience. What was the training like? It went both ways – and was as intense as you made it. The workshops give you the freedom that most jobs don’t; there were people there with families and other jobs whilst undertaking the programme too, so it’s really flexible. What advice would you give to people that maybe don’t have the confidence to apply? I started off doing one of the meet up groups beforehand, and they really give you confidence as you get to know people and hear their ideas. My idea started off as very wishy washy, but I had a passion for it, and that’s the key. The programme builds your confidence and it makes you believe in yourself - so my advice would be to just go for it! The mentors really help you along. How long has your business been going for? I graduated in June 2013, so it’s been going for over a year now. I had a massive order for my product really early on which proved difficult in the finance area for me. However, The Creative Start Up Programme helped me secure funding - so without them I could not have done it.

What’s it like being your own boss and having your own business? I was on Skype to my Dad the other day and he said to me: “You’ve never looked so tired but so happy” - and I think that’s true. The hours are insane - but you get a huge adrenaline rush when you see the effects of your work. I work really hard and seeing the results of the product on the shelves, knowing that it was me who created it, is an amazing feeling. Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time? On a yacht in the Caribbean! I have ambitious plans and the business is growing. I want to produce for a mass market, at the moment I have secured my product for Harvey Nicholls, Selfridges and Fortnum and Mason - but I’m just taking one day at a time. I’m essentially a one woman band at the moment! Finally then, what’s your overall opinion of the programme? If it wasn’t for the programme, I wouldn’t have a business today - and it’s one of the most valuable things I have done. I can’t thank the teachers and mentors enough -they’re top notch and only an email away. The School For Creative Startups runs in partnership with The Sheffield College - and applications open now. Check out www.schoolforcreativestartups.com for more.

ADvAncED GuitAr cEntrE The mighty Advanced Guitar Centre laid down the gauntlet this month to head to their musical Mecca and build a bespoke guitar from scratch. Would we make beautiful music together… or hit a bum chord? Read on, dear reader, read on… Words: Chloe Martin. Pics: Carl Reid.

Hidden in the depths of Handsworth is a one of a kind guitar shop that allows you to create your dream guitar. So, whether you’re a David Grohl wannabe, or a female that wants to unleash the Hayley Williams within - this magical store caters to your musical lusts. Adam and Gareth at the Advanced Guitar Centre were childhood friends who reunited years later in a Sheffield pub and soon realised they both shared a mutual love for building guitars. Some may call it a strange coincidence, others may call it fate. They started in 2011 in Adam’s garage - initially spraying and creating body art for guitars (which I looked at in awe when shown). They then realised that the parts were where the big bucks were and decided it was the key to a successful business. They left their everyday jobs and began a shop build on December 23, 2013 (at that time it was a mere breeze block room) – officially launching this year on June 2014 . What’s most amazing about this store is that you can pick your own parts and essentially build your own guitar from scratch - from the body and neck to the colour of the hardware used and everything in between. “It does take a bit of time - but everything is unique,” Gareth told me.

case you don’t have time to pick out all the parts. The shop relies on their popular international internet base but, as Adam said: “With customers coming into the shop they can find what they want and we can advise them better.” So, back to the challenge at hand. With their assistance, could we build our own Exposed guitar? They took me over to the back of the shop where I was greeted with fret boards galore and they asked

me to pick a body. Erm… “Do you want a glossy finish, or a wooden look,” they asked. Glossy? The only glossy thing I knew was hair, so I stuck with what I knew and went for a vintage white gloss. Sounds luxurious, right? Next up, the neck of the guitar – and I opted for a 22 fret Canadian Maple neck with a vintage style nitro nitrocellulose satin finish (try saying that with your mouth full). The vintage theme seemed to me the way to go. Everyone loves a bit of retro, right? Plus, I may not know much about guitars – but I know my fashion – so a black scratch plate was next on the list. We then added, in no particular order: a chrome bridge with six individual brass saddles, Tonerider Vintage Plus pickup set, strap locks, Wilkinson split shaft machine heads, chrome hardware and finally the strings – Rotosound Orange Guage 9 Hybrids. One of the main focuses of the Advanced Uitar Centre is “tweaking your tone” – small upgrades make a big difference. On this guitar we used brass saddles as they were

denser than standard zinc saddles – adding extra valued tone and sustain. The Tonerider pickups we chose are one of the UK’s leading pickup brands – and Advanced Guitar Centre are the only authorised dealer of these in the Sheffield area – these vintage scatter wound pickups are manufactures as they were in the good old days and gave our vintage looking guitar a vintage voice. Good stuff! Needless to say, that’s a lot of technical jargon to take in – but the lads at Advanced Guitars have a way of putting you in the picture and making you feel at ease. It’s an incredibly enjoyable experience. If you’re looking to build or upgrade your own guitar at home, they also sell hardware packages - so you won’t end up rummaging around for that last tiddly screw! Not only this, they’ll also mend your broken axe and even string it for free. “Just like a car, guitars should have a regular MOT – and we’re the service centre,” said Adam. “They need TLC to stay at their best.” Thankfully, the guys to put it all together for us – so it was off for a pub lunch while they

worked their magic. An hour later and they were already putting the final touches to our creation. Adam used an abrasive ‘fret rubber to polish the fret ahead of the strings going on before I got to pick a strap to complete the look – black canvas keeping with the style. All that was left was to name our finished product (we opted for Audrey after Ms Hepburn and her timeless style) and then rock out. We plugged into the amp and… SHE LIVES! So, there it was, my own personalised guitar all picked by me! Verdict

Overall, I thought I did pretty well at choosing the guitar parts - but the real stars here were Adam and Gareth whose guidance and patience was top notch throughout the process. Well done guys. Challenge completed, chalk up an Exposed victory. Woop!

MASTERS, DISTINGUISHED READERS, MY LORDS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. PLEASE BE SEATED AS WE INTRODUCE TO YOU THIS MONTH’S IN SESSION FEATURE.

E M I L Y J A N E S TA N C E R We’re at The Bishop’s House in Meersbrook Park, which dates back to the end of the 15th century, making it older than the city of Sheffield, Manor Castle and Bruce Forsyth, to boot. With a historic setting in place, we needed a sound which suited the backdrop; we wanted music which could transcend the years and compliment the rustic interior of the house. We managed to find a perfect match in the music of Emily Jane Stancer – a young acoustic artist currently plying her trade around the Steel City – and a local butchers, as we touch on later. Showing the true character of a hard-working muso, Emily shrugged off a nasty cold and agreed to meet us –hanky firmly in pocket – for a natter about the upcoming recording and, well, pretty much everything else. Hi Emily! What tracks will you be performing for us in this month’s Exposed In Session recording? I’ve not decided on two yet! But I know I’ll definitely be performing a song of mine called ‘Ceri’s Song’. One will do for now! Could you tell us a bit about the song? It’s a bit of a funny one. Basically, me and my friend, Ceri, were both heartbroken at the same time – so I decided to write a song for us both.

Interview: Joe Food. Photography: Marc A Barker Ah, dear. Teenage heartbreak? It was a bit more recent than that, actually! It’s just a song which I suppose aims to reassure that everything will be alright in the long run. And, thankfully, it did turn out ok! Good to hear! How did you first get into playing music? I started off by busking around the town centre. I later decided to give live gigs a go and, after a few knockbacks, I was given the chance to support Artery at the 02 Academy in 2010. Wow! That must have been a pretty scary first gig experience? It was. I think they were after someone who could change over quickly before they came on – so an acoustic artist fitted the bill. At the time I only really knew covers; but after hours of practice I managed to slip an original song into the set list.

That’s pretty impressive, considering that a lot of people usually get something like a twenty minute slot in the local boozer for their first gig. To be honest, I think it was good to be thrown in at the deep end for the first gig – I’ve not felt nervous at a gig since! I’ve also heard along the grapevine that you work part time at a local butchers? I certainly do – John Crawshaw’s in Hillsborough. I can’t complain because dinner hours are awesome when you work at a butchers shop. I can imagine it’s pork sarnie heaven. But now we’ve established that, I think it’s naturally time to list our favourite meat related songs. I’ll start us off with ‘Pork and Beans’ by Weezer. Yours? Oh no! I genuinely can’t think of any meat related songs off the top of my head. I reckon ‘Meat is Murder’ by The Smiths also gets an honourable mention. I suppose, if you make it big, Morrissey is off the list of potential music collaborations given your professional past. Ever thought about that? To be honest, I can’t say I’ve ever lost any sleep over it! People told me that working in a butchers will turn me into a vegetarian, but it’s had the opposite effect. Since we’ll be filming and recording your performance inside a venue that’s been around since the 15th century, let’s keep the historic vibe going. So, if you could choose any bygone era to live in, which would you choose and why? It will sound rubbish because it’s a fairly

recent era, but I’d probably go for the 80s. The main reason being that I’d loved to have seen Madonna play live back then! I always watch ‘In Bed with Madonna’, which is a film of her touring in the 80s. She was incredible back then. Quick-fire history question: favourite historical figure and why? I might struggle with this because I hated history back at school. *Racks brains* Actually, can I have Buddha? I read into Buddhism quite a lot and it really appeals to me. Is that an ok choice? Mate, Buddha is fine. So, any exciting plans on the horizon? I’ve recently recorded a demo with Paul Tuffs, and now I’m thinking of doing a proper production of ‘Ceri’s Song’ – maybe with a band behind it. I’ve got a few gigs coming up – there’s one at The Rocking Chair on October 30th which I’m really excited about. Other than that, I’d really like to get a girl band together, but it’s proving difficult to get all of the members

together. I’ve been hugely influenced by Haim this year – I think they’ve been incredible. Time for another quick-fire question: who would join you in your dream girl band? That’s easy! I’d choose Madonna and Marina Diamandis. I have no idea what we’d call the band, but it would be pretty awesome. ‘The Pretty Awesomes’ – could that work? Anyhoo, with Halloween just around the corner, let’s talk about terrifying gigs; like, Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga on stage together would be too creepy for words. What gig line-up would freak you out? Oh, I’ll tell you who freaks me out – Pete Burns. I think seeing him play live would be a bit freaky. Oh, and I know she’s not a musician, but Janet Street-Porter is pretty scary, too. Like, if she was doing a spoken word performance as the support act, I’d probably leave.

Eez-eh,

Now! Exposed Meets Kasabian. Words: Kieran Wade.

What a year it’s been for Leicester legends Kasabian. Following a stonking Glasto headline slot, and a historic hometown show in front of 50,000 people at Victoria Park in Leicester, this month sees them setting off on a huge autumn UK tour – culminating right here in Sheffield on December 13. Currently in the form of their lives, both on stage and on record, we caught up with frontman Tom Meighan to find out more. If you could, imagine you’re back in 1997 – did you ever think you’d be playing sold out arenas? Was it ever your mission, so to speak? Yeah, I predicted it man, I went to a psychic and everything (laughs). Seriously though, no. I mean, we set out to be f*cking rock stars, to get on the cover of NME, and all that good shit! It’s gone by so fast. When I think back to ’97, it’s been a f*cking crazy time. I’ve wanted to be a rock star since I can remember, and to play in front of massive crowds, it’s all about the people and playing live – it’s absolutely amazing, man. It was our aim to be what we are today - and we’ve worked hard for it. It’s about having a dream, everyone has a dream, I followed mine and stayed with it - and it paid off. You’ve got to follow your dreams no matter what…

What can we expect from the tour in terms of the setlist – a bit of everything? Yeah, a bit of everything, really. There’s gonna be six songs from the latest record, and a mix of other stuff. We’ve put out so many songs, it can be a bit of a headache putting together the final setlist because you want to make sure the show is gonna be f*cking amazing, you know? It’s a good headache, though – it’s a lot of fun going through our songs and picking out certain ones. It’s insane to think how much stuff we’ve done - but I’ve loved every minute of it. Our wonderful city of Sheffield is the last date on the tour, is there any particular

reason for this? No reason really – that’s just how it played out. I love it in Sheffield though, really good city to play. We’ve had so many good memories there - and I’m excited to be going back there in December. Our tour manager sorts all that stuff out, it just happened to turn out that way. We recently put out a Tweet asking for people’s most memorable gigs in Sheffield - and Kasabian came up for when you were the support act for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at The Leadmill in 2004. Do you remember it at all? Oh yeah, I do remember that! It’s pretty crazy when I think about it. I mean,

I’ve been a massive fan of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club since I was little - and so to play with them back then was like a dream come true. Motorcycle Club are a proper rock and roll band, they’ve been through all sorts of shit, had problems over the years, but they’ve stuck at it and given it their all - so to be compared to those guys is amazing. I remember the venue quite well, quite dark and full of atmosphere, yeah it was a good gig. What’s the strangest thing to ever happen to you on tour? Absolutely loads of crazy stuff has happened throughout the years. Much I don’t really remember, unfortunately, but they’re the best times anyway, aren’t they? Nothing really strange has happened, you might come across some strange people now and again, but apart from that – we’ve just had loads of good times as opposed to anything weird or strange or whatever. On that note then, do you believe in ghosts or anything paranormal? I believe something more than us is out there, my friend. There’s got to be when you think about it. Yeah, I believe in all that

cover story

paranormal shit, absolutely. It’s nice to believe in something like that, you know, that spirits are around us and what have you. What’s the best and worst thing about being on the road? There’s definitely more best than worst. Playing music at different cities every night is an incredible feeling, I’ve been able to visit some amazing countries in such a short amount of time. I mean, one night we might be playing Italy, and the next night we could be playing somewhere in Canada, you know? It’s a crazy life, but I love it. It’s getting to all these places that’s a bit of a downer. It feels like I’m stuck in a tin can sometimes when I’m flying for so long - so, if anything, that’s the worst thing about it. It can be so boring at times, just flying in the air for what seems like forever, but once we’re up and playing to all these people none of that matters because the feeling I get is f*cking amazing.

Have you had any injuries whilst on tour? Honestly mate, nothing too devastating. I remember panicking really bad when I woke up in Germany and couldn’t speak – I’d lost my voice completely, so that was terrifying as we had more shows to do. We’ve only ever had to cancel three gigs, which I think is impressive considering how long we’ve been knocking about. I don’t like letting our fans down – so, if one of us does have an injury, it’s more than likely we’ll play regardless. But yeah, for me – nothing too serious, thankfully. Where do you see yourself and the rest of Kasabian in 20 years’ time then? Still doing gigs? Old, fat and bald (laughs) - just like everyone else, man. I think we’ll still be playing music - but who knows what can happen in the future? We’ll have to see - but I like the idea of making music still in 20 years or even longer. As far as I’m concerned, everyone is up for doing this for a long time, it’s a lifetime commitment.

Kasabian: Cast In Stone Well, polymer clay, to be precise. This here Sergio and Tom are the work of local artist Jaqui Dowling – who previously featured in Exposed back in 2004. 10 years on, following something of a respite, she’s back – touting local lot Velcro Teddybears as her inspiration to get back in the game. “I’m a big fan of the band,” she tells us. “In fact, I’ve even done a Velcro Teddybear range! They really encouraged me to start up again – and hopefully I’ll be exhibiting some pieces at their bar, The Royal Standard, in the near future.” Now looking to take things to the next level, everyone from Jake Bugg to Amy Winehouse and Ian Brown has had the Dowling treatment – whilst she’s passionate about promoting the local scene too. “I love bigging Sheffield up,” she smiles. “I gave Alex Turner some Arctic Monkey statues at The Leadmill. They were in a shoe box and he asked if it was a bomb! I’ve done loads of others – The Rev, Steve Edwards… the list goes on.” Jaqui’s available for commissions and prices start at £20. WELL BEING

Monday. Dragging yourself back to work after a glorious two day break and finding an email inbox full to the brim along with a jobs list longer than your arm - making that stress-free weekend feel as though it never existed. Or, so I thought... On said jobs list was an afternoon scheduled at Serenity Holistic Therapies for an experience feature comprising of a Tsuboki treatment. And, before I had time to panic and wriggle out of what I thought involved needles sticking out of my eye, I was relieved to learn that I would be having a Japanese face massage. Now this is the kind of kick start to the week that I can get along with. Arriving at Serenity I was greeted by the lovely Janyce Lusis - who led me into a dimly lit, incense aroma filled room, where I was then wrapped up in a huge blanket. Feeling snug as a bug and ready for a sleep, I was now geared up for my Tsuboki massage… Tsubo is an acupressure point linked to an energy line known as meridian, which is named after organs and areas within the body (and for those sceptics out there, I was informed that these can actually be measured electronically). Ki is the Japanese word for energy - and the two concepts combined make Tsuboki. The four stages of Tsuboki are a neck

After being briefed on this, alarm bells in my head were raised slightly with the phrase ‘drainage’ - which, let’s face it, is not the most relaxing of terms. However, Janyce assured me that my fears were unfounded and this process was simply a gentle massage that stimulates the body’s lymphatic system - which in turn increases circulation and assists the body in eliminating waste and toxins. Aaand, relax. The whole treatment lasts 45 minutes and is an incredibly relaxing process. Janyce said that it’s extremely common for people to even fall asleep - so I’m glad I’m not the only one who

nearly drifted off! The best thing about Tsuboki? You leave feeling stress free and relaxed - yet also energised. Unlike other massages, I didn’t feel like I wanted to doze off for the rest of the afternoon. You could even go in the morning - as Serenity is open from 11am on Monday and Tuesday and 10am Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The verdict? Costing £28, Tsuboki might seem like more of a one-off indulgence than a regular treatment, but it’s been proven that, over time, regular massages will provide a natural facelift. With weather, pollution, stress, diet, booze, cigs and everything else in between taking its toll, it’s definitely worth checking out.

The Golden Style Exposed fashion blogger Kate Mitchell checks out The Style Bar. Pics: James Highmore.

if you’re anything like me, you’ll have spent evenings getting ready for a night out when your hair just refuses to do what it’s told. I tend to find I can’t get it to curl how I want it to, or I’ll have grand plans for a gorgeous up-do - but end up with arm ache in a sea of hair grips trying to sort it out. So, I was intrigued when Exposed sent me to check out new salon, The Style Bar, the first American style ‘blow-out’ bar to open in Sheffield. The concept is relatively new over here - a salon dedicated to blow-drys and hair styles rather than merely traditional cuts and colours. For any occasion when you need to look your best, you can choose a style and head out looking like you hired a personal stylist. It seemed too good to be true, so I decided to put them to the test.

I was greeted by managers Ben and Cherise - and then by the salon’s mascots, gorgeous pug dogs Ronnie and Reggie, who came trotting up to welcome me! The first thing that struck me was how luxurious it all felt; rows of white leather chairs around the main bay, (for creating those glamourous up-do’s I find so tricky) flanked by a decadent selection of drinks lined up on the mini-bar, a flat screen TV and a wall of professional products. I was shown to one of the blow-dry seats for a chat with Henry, my stylist for the afternoon, and placed my drink order - just a pot of tea for me, but there’s also bubbly if you want to really pamper yourself. I perused the cheeky blow-dry ‘menu’ and was impressed by the range of styles on offer - each one accompanied by a little illustration of the finished look. There seemed to be something to satisfy everyone’s hair dreams; from the boho fishtail plait, to the timeless glamour of a ‘High Society’ in the style of Audrey Hepburn. I loved the inventive selection, and decided on ‘Vintage Hollywood ’think Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge era. First though, Henry wanted to give me a taste of the classic ‘blow-out’ - and I was amazed to see my stubborn mane being teased into a gorgeous sleek style with Bardot-esque volume at the roots. Henry then set about transforming me again. He carefully curled all my hair (a treat for someone like me who can only successfully do the front) and then secured it with hairspray - before leaving me to relax with my tea and Baileys chocolates as the curls set. Henry then gently brushed out the curls to reveal shining Hollywood waves that I’ve never been able to achieve myself - despite my best efforts. With my hair looking as glamourous as the menu promised, I went through to their sister salon,

the newly opened Nail Bar, to complete my afternoon of pampering. Nail technician Rebecca showed me the nail menu and I decided on an elegant UV gel polish in shell pink. I don’t take as much care of my nails as I should, so having my cuticles done was a treat in itself. The gel polish went on perfectly smooth and shiny, and lasts up to four weeks. For any nail-novices like me, it instantly makes your digits look classy if you like to keep them fairly short. Both the Nail and Style Bar aim to create an atmosphere of affordable luxury and give you a taste of the celebrity lifestyle. I certainly felt they achieved this and I’ll definitely be stopping by again soon to try something else off the menu. The Style Bar also offers cutting, finishing and colour treatments as well as styling for men. The salon is available for a variety of occasions including private parties and brides-to-be, and has two late night openings a week, on Thursday and Friday until 8pm. The Style Bar Blenheim Reach, 861 Ecclesall Rd, S11 8TH. 0114 268 6611 www.thestylebar.co.uk

We do a lot of things really well here in Sheff. But, the two things we do best, are beer and music (has there ever been a more beautiful pairing?). With that in mind, we figured we’d give you a musical education in the form of an almighty pub crawl. Be sure to give it a go yourselves, yeah? Words: Joe Food. Ok, so we leave the Exposed office all wrapped up and ready to celebrate Sheffield’s musical heritage – and also sneak a few pints in while we’re at it. Thankfully, it doesn’t take long to reach our first port of call; the doors of The Washington on Fitzwilliam Street swing open invitingly and we take our first plunge into Sheffield music legend.

The Washington

A live music haven in its own right, ‘The Washy’ boasts an incredibly loyal following and is considered one of city’s favourite late night pub stops by locals and students alike. There’s not many Sheffield bands who haven’t passed through its doors at some point in their careers; from Drenge to The Everly Pregnant Brothers, the venue has seen some cracking gigs in its time. Nick Banks, drummer of Pulp and regular customer, teamed up with an associate to purchase the pub during the nineties, putting on plenty of live gigs and DJ sets during their stay – a trend which has, thankfully, continued to this day. Nick’s brother Richard, a former Pulp roadie, is also a regular fixture here – and everyone from Long Blondes to Hoggboys have worked behind the bar.

The Hop

Next up, and a mere stone’s throw away, is a place which thrives on real ale, live music and pies – the staple diet of your typical Exposed Magazine employee. Despite being a fairly recent addition to the Sheffield scene, the venue brings its own musical prestige to the table due to Danny McNamara of Embrace co-owning the joint. Check out music show #StillConcious on Youtube which is filmed upstairs.

The Bowery

Ah, another one of the more contemporary jewels in the city’s musical crown. The Bowery was bought by ex-Arctic Monkey Andy Nicholson with promoters James O’Hara and Michael Dean and quickly

established itself as a popular hang-out for local music types. Oh, and Matty Helders (Arctic Monkeys drummer) once ran a Supreme Being clothes store situated upstairs at the venue. Also, the Monkeys played an intimate birthday party gig there in 2010 for Tom Rowley – Dead Sons lead singer and ex-Milburn guitarist. Speaking of Milburn, Joe Carnall worked behind the bar for a stint and played a legendary acoustic set there for 2012’s Tramlines after party. I remember queuing for hours to see Alt-J smash Tramlines BEFORE they got preposterously popular too. Reet trendy, me.

Green Room

Once upon a time, the Green Room was a Chinese restaurant called The Rickshaw. A certain Chuck Berry popped in after a City Hall gig back in the 60s and ended up having a casual jam upstairs with his entourage in addition to his chicken chow mein. As you do. Aside from that, previous incarnations of the Green Room (Mr Kites/ Casablancas) have seen some legendary jazz nights – while its current guise once hosted a secret gig by Palma Violets and recently saw a talk by ex-Oasis manager Simon Mason for Off The Shelf. They continue to offer up free live music on a regular basis. I remember a top acoustic set from a certain Jon Windle (Little Man Tate) which spilled out onto the pavement one Tramlines. Lovely stuff.

The Frog & Parrot

Onwards, dear comrades. Onwards to the Frog. Can I get a ribbit? Another legendary local venue which has seen countless numbers of musicians and bands cut their teeth on its hallowed stage – The Violet May, Wet Nuns, Alvarez Kings and Sarah Mac to name a few! They’ve even had a Wet Nun, a Ratell and an Alvarez King working behind the bar amongst others. But it was Joe Cocker who hit the jackpot after an early 1960’s gig at the pub landed him with a recording contract. He didn’t

do too bad for himself afterwards, like. Anyway, after raising a glass to all the past and present bands which played the venue, we move on.

20 people. Plenty of other top notch bands also played in the former top room; not to mention the traditional Irish music downstairs on weekends. Sláinte!

The Great Gatsby

Fagan’s

En-route to our next venue, we stop off at Plantology and gaze up at the flat window which Jarvis Cocker fell from; “a genius once did his leg in at this spot, let’s have a moment’s silence for the silly bugger.” Silence respectfully observed, we nip across to The Great Gatsby, reaching the halfway point in our musical journey. The venue has boasted plenty of wonderful acts over its three years of residence in Sheffield – including the High Hazels debut gig. Cracking stuff. NEXT!

Bloo 88

On West Street, heading to our next pit-stop, we pass the building which used to be The Limit - and spare a thought for some of the legends which played the iconic alternative music venue: Human League, ABC, Cabaret Voltaire, Joy Division, The Cure, Pulp, U2, Def Leppard, Siouxie & the Banshees. We quickly run out of nostalgic reflection time and move on to Bloo 88 – formerly The Hallamshire Hotel - which was something of a rite of passage for many bands. The earliest known live recording of Pulp was made there in 1984 – and everyone from Richard Hawley’s Lovebirds to Inspiral Carpets trod the boards.

DAda

Fusing art and music, the launch of DAda was curated by none other than Martin Ware – of Heaven 17 fame. You’ll find plenty of nods towards Sheffield’s musical heritage here, namely on the tables, where you’ll no doubt see Alex Turner or Richard Hawley staring back at you. On the wall you’ll find an original Pete McKee (Everly Pregnant Brothers) doodle too.

The Grapes

No need to explain why this fabled boozer makes the cut. As any Sheffielder worth their salt knows, Henderson’s Relish is the dog’s testicles and Arctic Monkeys played their first gig in The Grapes. There’s even something of a shrine to them. The Killers once had a chat for NME here – and Plan B held a Myspace sponsored gig for around

Around the corner to the second point on the ‘Sheffield Irish triangle’ and it’s good old Fagan’s. One of the finest pints of Guinness you’ll get up this neck of the woods makes it a favourite haunt of Richard Hawley. Quick tip: don’t bug him for a picture if you see him enjoying a pint – you might end up with a clip ‘round t’ear. He’ll often use the snug as his ‘office’ and bring his muckers such as Jools Holland in for a jar.

The Dog & Partridge

Legend has it that The Dubliners would frequent ‘T’Dog’ whenever they hit City Hall (rumours that lead singer Ronnie Drew is actually still barred following a vomiting incident are hazy at best). Add to this regular appearances by The Fureys, not to mention local the leg-end that is Gandhi Warhol currently rocking the decks every Friday, and you’ve got a corker of a boozer which still retains its original character today.

Twist & Fuel

Final stop – not including the post-sesh Dev Chippy – is Twist & Fuel. Before 2010, it was known as The Boardwalk, and before then it was The Black Swan (or ‘Mucky Duck’ for locals). Both venues were heavyweights of the Sheffield music scenes in their day; The Black Swan was where The Clash played their first gig and the Arctic Monkeys named their first demo ‘Beneath the Boardwalk’ in honour of the place. In fact, Alex Turner, Andy Nicholson, Jon McClure and Jon Windle have all been on the staff books at the venue. As we know, The Boardwalk was instrumental in facilitating the “Sheffield wave” (circa 2005) – with bands such as the Arctics, Milburn, Little Man Tate, Harrisons and The Long Blondes all playing there regularly. So it’s finally home time. We could have stopped at many more places but, unfortunately, it was chucking out time and the first few rays of morning sunlight were starting to break through. Musical heritage crawl part II will have to wait for another day.

Micro Wave

Remember back in t’day, when folk in the pub used to actually talk to each other? It’s been a bit of a miserable decline on the local pub front, with many closing or being replaced by large pub chains. The very idea of a local independent pub serving real local ales is becoming something quite alien - even to the most enthusiastic of pub-goers. However, there seems to be a glimmering beacon of hope with the announcement of Sheffield’s first micropub - a joint venture by Chris Sinclair and John Harrison. The idea has just been given the green light by Sheffield council’s planning committee - who only took a few minutes to come to the decision. Set to be located on Ecclesall Road, the micropub will be a conversion of the E-Cigarette shop near Hunters Bar - so it’ll be a tight squeeze! What differs a micropub from, well… just a small pub? Co-owner John Harrison says it’s a loose concept which has changed over the years since the micropub emerged. “Previously the micropub has been defined as a public house which serves exclusively ale, meaning; no lager, no wine, no spirit. This has previously changed to include lager, but the traditional principles of the micropub are still very much the same.”

It’s Saturday night and, as standard, the restaurant is packed and buzzing. The menu here offers fantastic value at just £25 for three courses (it’s even cheaper during the week) which also gets you admission, a race card and a £1 bet. The view is magnificent - and the live greyhound racing really adds a whole new dimension to dining. Warmly greeted and seated, we kick things off with a white onion and apple soup with focaccia croutes, and the garlic ciabatta – the latter delivered classic rustic Mediterranean flavours of tomato, mozzarella, rocket and balsamic vinegar, while the former offered up a terrific

balance of sweet and savoury that was totally moreish. Next up, it was the herb-roasted chicken breast for myself – an incredibly tender offering which fell apart as the knife and fork hit it – perfectly complemented by minted new potatoes, creamy peas with pancetta and a rich red wine sauce. For my partner, it was all about the braised shoulder of lamb with champ potatoes and rosemary jus – again, as tender as it could be and equally tasty. To finish, a cheeseboard and sticky toffee pudding - and service throughout was impeccable.

The VerdicT

Whilst we didn’t manage to win a bet on the night, Owlerton certainly won us over on the food front. It’s the full package here. A fab evening with great quality food and entertainment which you really need to experience for yourself.

TELL mE mORE: Those in the know will tell you that these knobbly little things will trump most other tubers. Sweet and nutty, they make delicious purees, but the best I’ve ever eaten were raw and thinly sliced with lemon, olive oil and ricotta. Don’t confuse them with Globe Artichokes - they’re actually related to the sunflower! WHERE DO I GET IT: Nethergreens, 235 Oakbrook Rd, S11.

Quince

Nap-py Christmas

TELL mE mORE: An ancient fruit, Quince looks like a yellow lumpy pear. Often used in jams and jellies, it’s the main ingredient in Membrillo, a quince paste served with cheese. Try it in Jamie Oliver’s Orchard Eve’s Pudding – it’s delicious! WHERE DO I GET IT: Sharrow Marrow, 232 Sharrowvale Road, S11; Porterbrook Deli, 354 Sharrowvale Road, S11 (stocks Membrillo).

Vacherin Mont D’Or

Hop To It Sheffield based specialist beer shop, Hop Hideout, celebrates its first anniversary this month. Located within the Vintedge arcade, at 444 Abbeydale Road, the boozy venture is operated by Exposed beer blogger Jules Gray alongside Will Linford. Jules said: “We’ve had a fantastic first year. We’ve especially enjoyed hosting events including tutored tastings, art exhibitions and ‘Meet the Brewer’ evenings - it’s really important for us to engage with our customers and inspire them to try something new. We’ve already got some plans in the pipeline for next year - when we hope to run further beer and food matching events.” Hop Hideout is open 12pm to 5pm on Wednesday and Thursday, 10am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday and 11-4pm on Sunday. Look out for birthday celebration event details on Hop Hideout’s website happening November 15/16

TELL mE mORE: Made from the rich, unpasteurised milk of alpine pastures, and contained in spruce bark, Swiss Vacherin Mont d’Or has a melting, voluptuous texture and a resinous flavour. A seasonal cheese available between October and April, bake in the oven (maybe with a splash of vino), split and then dive in with some proper bread. WHERE DO I GET IT: Porterbrook Deli, 354 Sharrowvale Road, S11.

Venison

TELL mE mORE: Lean and gamey, venison is a great sustainable choice - as much of the UK stock is from deer that roam freely, rather than being intensively farmed. Use it in game pies, rich stews and, if you’re feeling flush, you could always roast a haunch. WHERE DO I GET IT: Real Meat Sheffield, 950 Ecclesall Road. Are you a Sheffield producer or supplier? Beer Central celebrate their first year of opening this month - so we made the short hop down to The Moor to find out what’s brewing.

cheerS For The BeerS

Last year Beer Central took the smart step of opening a city centre bottle shop with a sharp focus on the very latest modern craft beers and local traditional ales. You’ll find them down in the city centre, just inside the striking main entrance to the Moor Market, where they continue to sell an outstanding and varied range of bottles, cans, t-shirts, mini-kegs and gift boxes. As a small independent company (the type that Sheffield loves to embrace), they can source beers from anywhere they like – and, in addition to popular local stuff from Bradfield, Kelham Island, Thornbridge and Acorn, they also have other UK leading brews from the Wild Beer Co, Siren, The Kernel, Tempest, Weird Beard, Beavertown, Brewdog and oodles more. Add to this a ton of beers from the USA, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands - and you pretty much have the world of beer covered. Don’t be surprised by how small this shop is when you arrive - within a few seconds you’ll realise their clever design allows them to stock over 400 different beers (and they even have a tiny fridge to guarantee a few cold craft cans for those in desperate need)! You can browse the booze, taking in all the cool labels, or tap into the knowledge and expertise of their very approachable team. Sean pretends to be in charge, but Joanne and Deborah like to take all the credit - and all three can always be relied upon for help and advice in picking the right brew! They have Christmas sewn up - with dozens of special winter beers - and of course they also sell cider and mead, perfect as mulled winter drinks

with warming spices. Their hand-made wooden beer crates are very cool and make a perfect pressie; fill them up with half a dozen beers and you have a gift that every beer lover would die for. Personalised gift vouchers are also available, giving your loved one the chance to pop down and buy exactly what they want, easy Christmas shopping!! Beer Central also deliver boxes of beer across the UK - perfect if you need to send a gift to a brother in Brighton or a beer crazy auntie in Aberdeen! City centre parking can sometimes be a nightmare - but we found free parking for an hour within 3-4 minutes’ walk of the shop. Alternatively, Atkinson’s do a cheap deal for Moor Market shoppers. Beer Central also has a loyalty card scheme (Beer with Benefits) - so grab your exclusive discount card the next time you’re nearby. You should also keep an eye out for their newly organised free ‘Bottle Share’ events in some of the city’s best pubs - a once a month chance to meet up with fellow beer lovers and share a few special bottles and beery chat. We hear from a few regulars that these are fantastic nights, but fill up almost instantly, so be quick. As well as constantly promoting their latest stock via Twitter and Facebook, the good news is their website will be finished shortly and will include an online shop and UK wide delivery service. You’ll find them soon at www.beercentral.co.uk The latest copies of Sheffield CAMRA’s Beer Matters magazine are also available from their shop which opens Mon-Sat 8.30am to 5.30pm. Most of all, enjoy your beers – we did!

Get ready to step up your game at Napoleons Casino & Restaurant in Owlerton - following their new £2 million refurbishment and extension. Unveiling a new restaurant, bar, lounge area, extended gaming floor recently, along with the first outdoor gaming terrace outside of London, Napoleons boasts some of the best facilities in the city for wining, dining and gaming. With loads more space, new menus and a toasty terrace with outdoor heating surrounding the gaming tables, Napoleons is the perfect place for the party season. Having long been a Sheffield nightlife hotspot, Napoleons Owlerton has been around for twenty years, and has seen a few changes in its time, although nothing to this scale. Chief Executive Mark Allen said: “We felt now was the time to make the investment in drastically improving the facilities at Owlerton. By popular demand it was clear that we needed a bigger restaurant, bar area and lounge where customers could relax and enjoy a drink. My personal highlight, however, is our new outdoor gaming terrace; it’s a very exciting addition to our casino and currently the only one of its kind outside of London – a Yorkshire ‘first’ we are very proud of it.” Having been in the biz for over 45 years, Allen believes the key to success is maintaining your true ethos - whilst constantly improving and moving forward with the times.

“We like to keep a traditional feel to Napoleons with a personal experience; however we’re always looking at ways we can improve. Our substantial investment in the new facilities at Owlerton has made the venue bigger, better and bolder than ever before - ensuring the customer experience is second to none. We’re excited to now showcase our improvements to our existing and new customers.” And to go with their brand new shiny look, Napoleons have got a few tricks up their sleeves to ensure you have a top night out. Every Thursday from 6.30pm, if you’re dining in the restaurant you can ‘spin to win’ and receive a discount on your bill. Simply spin the roulette wheel and, whatever number the ball lands on, you’ll receive that percentage discount – it could be up to 36 percent! They’ve also got Christmas sorted too, with delicious menus and package deals on offer. At just £18.95 per person for groups of 25 or more, you can feast on the Napoleons buffet menu, featuring an assorted finger buffet and a tempting range of hot and cold dishes. For an extra £5 per person, if you fancy your chances you can upgrade to the Dine in Style package, including a gaming chip worth a fiver and a complimentary drink on arrival. For smaller groups, you can’t go wrong with the full three course Christmas menu, giving you choices from roast turkey with all the trimmings to sirloin steak, sea bass and a range of desserts

Hey Big Spender

Most people enjoy a flutter in the casino, but here’s a couple of fellas who decided to bet big: 1) In December 1989, a 40-yearold man walked into Ladbrokes in Newport, South Wales and put £30 on Cliff Richard being knighted, U2 remaining as a group, Eastenders still being shown on the BBC as a weekly soap opera and Australian soaps Neighbours and Home and Away still appearing on British television by 2000. Roll on January 2000 when the same man turns up to collect his winnings of £194,400 (paid out on accumulative odds of 6,479/1). 2) On September 29, 2001, a Tottenham fan put his entire mortgage on his team in a bid to impress his girlfriend. 3-0 up at the time, he saw no other outcome. Of course, Manchester United came back with five goals in the second half - leaving him homeless (and probably single). 3) In 1995 Archie Karas turned fifty dollars into forty million after lighting up the Vegas casinos in a lucky streak that at first got him ten thousand. Becoming the luckiest man in casino history, Archie only called it a day when he reached the big bucks. Unfortunately, he never did know when to call it quits - and lost it all later that year.

fireworks round-up

fireworks specTAculAr

Remember Remember The 5th Of November OOHH, AHHH. Crash, Bang, Wallop! You know the drill. Yorkshire’s biggest bang comes in the form of firework extravaganza event ‘After Dark’ at the purposebuilt Don Valley Grass Bowl this month. Now in its 18th year, and attracting crowds of up to 20,000, the annual event is well-known for its spectacular displays and large variety of activities available throughout the evening. After Dark is more than just fireworks. It bookmarks itself as one of Sheffield’s biggest events - with a funfair, massive bonfire, food stalls, bar and Heart Radio music stage on top of the magnificent professional firework display to music. And, if you don’t fancy viewing the display outside in the cold, you can kick back inside iceSheffield’s bar, supping on a drink and smugly viewing the display from the warmth behind their giant windows. Courtesy of the Heart Radio Stage, After Dark has seen a healthy helping of celebrities perform throughout the years - from pop sensations Girls Aloud to Matt Willis, Simon Webbe and Wet, Wet, Wet. 2014’s exciting line up is yet to be announced, so keep your eyes peeled. The festivities kick off at 5.30pm, allowing you some time to browse the stalls and have a whirl on a few rides before the Guy Fawkes bonfire is lit at 7.30pm and the fireworks kick off at 8.45pm.

Tickets are £10 (age 14+) and £5 for children. www.yellowbusevents.co.uk.

5 Things you didn’T know AbouT bonfire nighT ● When Guy Fawkes was arrested after his involvement in the gunpowder plot, he insisted to the police that his name was actually ‘John Johnson’. Creative. ● Shortly after being busted, Fawkes was marched to the King’s bedchamber to explain why he wanted to blow ‘em all up. After referring to the King as a disease (excellent start), he went on to say that the reason he needed such a massive amount of gunpowder was that it was the “only way to blow you Scotch beggars back to your own native mountains!” Not quite the remorse expected then. ● Today, a ‘guy’ is a bloke, a fella, a man. Yet, originally, as a result of that pesky Fawkes, a guy was a term for an “ugly, repulsive person”. ● Up until 1959, it was actually illegal not to celebrate Bonfire night in Britain. ● As part of a tradition (of longstanding paranoia), even today, whenever a new session is opened in Parliament, the Yeoman of the Guard will search the basement. You know, just in case…

If the mention of Captain Scarlet, Lady Penelope or Joe 90 has you waving your arms as though they’re on strings, you’re no friend of mine: this is serious stuff. From humble beginnings in a shed on an industrial estate in Slough, Gerry Anderson and his creative team made unique children’s TV that excited and entertained all over the world. They even created a word, Supermarionation, to describe what they did. The rise in sophistication of each subsequent show, from Fireball XL5 to Stingray, through Thunderbirds and finally to Captain Scarlet, was sadly mirrored by a decline in popularity, with Joe 90 and Secret Service marking the end of a glorious but brief moment in the limelight for the worlds in miniature that Gerry Anderson created. Noone in the film seemed quite able to put their finger on why it all went wrong, but they did all agree that creating Thunderbirds was the most enduring thing they did. This documentary united Gerry’s son with the surviving members of his dad’s production company, and with Parker and Lady Penelope re-strung for one last time to act as our guides, we got a flavour of what it was that gave these shows a magic that is absent in today’s children’s TV. You had to feel a bit sorry for Gerry Anderson though. His daughter revealed the not-so-well kept secret that deep down he hated the puppets. He wanted to make the shows so good that someone would ask him to work with real actors. Instead, they just wanted more puppet films. When he did eventually move on to live-action shows like UFO and Space 1999, the charm and the magic (and most importantly the innocence) of the shows had gone. Farewell to our wobbly headed friends; we will not see their like again (unless we buy the DVD boxed set). Mark Perkins.

where: DADA when: OCTOBER 10 When was the last time you went on a night out and felt truly positive and uplifted - even the day after? Well, Pangaea in October was one of those nights, and it definitely succeeded in banishing any autumn blues that were in the air. Hosted at DAda on Trippet Lane, the world dance music, tropical interior and palm tree hand stamp all contributed in taking visitors far away from a dark and dreary Friday night. Each DJ spun tracks from different continents and cultures (calypso, salsa, soca etc.), occasionally mixing them with more familiar styles (like grime and house). On top of that, there was a trumpet player who would play into the mic every so often, adding a further sumptuous layer of live performance. The kind of rhythms you won’t find just up the hill on West Street played on as the dance floor grew busier, and it was good to know that proceeds from this went to the Gaza Crisis Appeal - so all that dancing was for a worthy cause! The next one will be happening on November 7 at DAda again - it’d be rude not to! Joe E. Allen.

Spirits were high as the crowds entered the venue, warmly greeted by the smells of traditional German food and the glorious sight of bars with fridges stocked up on bottles of weissbier. Once settled with our steins, we began supping merrily, enjoying some of the entertainment on show. Some lucky participants were picked out of the crowd to join in with various party games, including running between cones to the Dambusters theme tune whilst holding a Ping-Pong ball between their legs; I can report that it’s certainly not as easy as it looks. After a particularly queasy ride on the in-house fairground ride, and a bite of German sausage (fnarr, fnarr), we were all suitably watered and fed - with nothing left to do but kick back and let the wonderful oompah band do their stuff. Born and based in the urban surroundings of Berlin, House music staple Oliver $ (or Oliver Dollar) has been making waves all over the world. His collaboration ‘Pushing On’ with Jimi Jules peaked at number 15 in the official UK charts - and 2014 is set to be his biggest year yet. Oliver hits Magna this month as part of Fear Fest November 1 - so we at Exposed thought it was time for a little catch-up. A few basics first, Oliver - how did you initially get into music? I used to work at a record store buying vinyl. I’ve always had an interest in buying music, in particular all the older records, and I suppose that’s where my love of sampling has come from. I met Jesse Rose whilst I was working in Berlin and he asked me to come on tour with him as his tour manager - at the time I barely spoke any English which was kind of funny and I was the worst tour manager ever! Whilst we were at one of the shows, I decided to play an after party instead of sorting his stuff out for the next gig. That’s when we both realised I’m a much better DJ than I am tour manager! What made you go with the name Oliver Dollar? Thinking of a name is actually really hard. Obviously my first name is Oliver, which I wanted to keep, and I just thought the $ sign looked wicked next to it. I like the look on flyers and I wanted to keep it simple and of course making some dollar. Since everybody started going on Facebook and social networks though I’ve had to change it slightly, so it’s a written dollar, as you can’t search the $ sign on Google. You’ve spent the last couple of months touring non-stop over Europe and the USA. Where’s your favourite location and why?

Too many places to mention - and the past six months have been the craziest touring of my life. It’s been amazing. Gigs in Europe and America are always very different, to start with the partying in Europe starts and ends much later, which is something I’m used to - but there are some wicked parties and after parties in America… you just have to know where to find them. My favourite location has to be either Detroit or Berlin though, I can’t pick between the two. The people are always so keen to have a good time, and it’s not money driven. How do the crowds compare to your hometown Berlin? Berlin is one of a kind. Panorama Bar is still my favourite place to play in the world and I don’t think that will ever change. What can fans expect from your show? Party music. I try to change my sets as much as possible, depending on where I’m playing and at what set time, but expect to have good fun.

What artists are you listening to at the moment? Too many to mention. My boy Brillstein on Play It Down, Jimi Jules, Matthew K and Ed Ed. I’ve been listening to a lot of the Desolat guys: tINI, Guti, Loco Dice. You’ve done quite a few collaborations recently. Which has been your favourite and why? I don’t think I can name a favourite - as they’re all different and great in their own right. Obviously, working with my pal Jimi Jules is always great, and of course Jesse Rose who I’ve worked with for such a long time. We have our compilation coming out soon - which has been a really fun project. What’s next? Anything we should know? Lots of exciting collaborations with some legends I’m honoured to work with, as well as some newer acts, and I’ve got something coming up with Chuck Daniels and Breach. I’m also finishing off my album which will be coming out next year.

Oliver $ performs at Magna Fear Fest November 1. For tickets and info see www.visitmagna.co.uk.

For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk Since opening its doors five years ago, Soyo has firmly established itself as one of Sheffield’s favourite party destinations. However, years of premium partying will take its toll – so the time recently came for a whopping refurb. Owners Matthew Jacques and Efe Omu decided it was time for people to fall in love with the venue again. £500,000 later, it was out with the old and in with the new – and what a difference! “We spoke to our customers, who stated that they would like to improve the amount of time they were having to wait to be served,” said Matthew Jacques. “So we’ve lengthened the bar - allowing more staff on and decreasing the time people have to spend waiting and instead can spend it enjoying the amazing music!” The ‘reshuffle’ didn’t just stop there - with a brand new VIP area, sofas, dancefloor, DJ booth, décor, menu and Yo bar, which is available for private parties. The new ‘industrial chic’ look takes inspiration from the past and future, to create a wonderful, postmodern design. Despite its brand new interior, the bar is determined to keep its core values – providing the people of Sheffield with the best night out possible. Matthew continued: “The whole Soyo team, both management and staff, are so happy with the reshuffle - we think the bar looks much more sophisticated and chic. We listened to the comments our customers had on the old layout to ensure we kept what people liked and changed what they didn’t. We hope that people come down to see the rejuvenated and refreshed venue for themselves and, as our tag line states, ‘fall in love’ with what we have to offer!” The launch night, which took place over the weekend of September19/20, saw thousands of party-goers come through the door - both regulars and first time visitors. Everyone gave the new-look a huge thumbs up and, since then, Soyo has never been busier - an excellent indication that the refurbishment has been a huge success. Head to www.soyo.me for more.

Renowned for his monstrous live shows, that transform venues everywhere into colossal party scenes, major UK DJ Example is hitting Sheffield this month for a highly anticipated show at the O2 Academy. Having made his major debut on the UK music scene with breakthrough single ‘Kickstarts’, which peaked at number 3 in the official UK singles chart, he’s since had countless UK Top 40 singles – and recently released fifth studio album ‘Live Life Living’. We caught up with the man himself to talk parties, positivity and impending parenthood… So, you’re heading to our fair Sheffield shores. Are you a fan of the city? Massive fan! I’ve been playing shows there for years and had some mad nights out. My first show was supporting Plan B at The Leadmill which is an amazing venue – great vibe. That was in 2006. Then

I did a few shows at The Plug, played the Academy about five times, done the Arena last year. That’s almost a decade of Sheffield nights out! What can we expect from an Example show? Expect my whole back catalogue, all the hits from albums two to five, the crowd favourites and a few new bits thrown in there for good measure. This will be my last tour for quite some time as I’m having a baby in the New Year and then I’m going to spend more time focusing on acting. You’ve played all around the world, in some of the biggest party scenes, have you got a favourite? To be honest, places like South Africa, Thailand, Australia, Miami, New York you would always expect to be exciting - but then you can be surprised by crowds in

places you wouldn’t expect like South Korea, Finland and Malta! Then, after not touring the UK for a year, you come home and realise we have some of the maddest crowds in the world. What’s the best thing about being on tour? I enjoy the daily routine of waking up on the tour bus, make a smoothie, maybe train with the band, watch a movie, table tennis, sound check, few interviews, meet the fans outside, gig, few drinks after the show. Repeat. And the worst? Sometimes you miss your own bed. The flights and hotels can be tiring but, generally speaking, the UK tours on the bus are the most fun and the easiest. Your latest album is called ‘Live Life Living’ - is that the motto you lead your

For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk life by? Not really. It’s just a line taken from one of the songs on the album. It’s a very positive outlook on life and I’m very positive at the moment for the first time in ages - so I guess you can read into it however you want. I actually wish I’d called the album something else. Your wife Erin is expecting your first child together, how are you feeling? I can’t wait! We wanted kids and it feels like the right time. I just can’t wait ‘til I can actually start speaking to them. Are you hoping he/she is going to be a ‘head banger’ like yourself? (Laughs) I dunno. I hope they like music as much as me, but I’ll let them choose their own path in life. Do you think the little one will be a fan of your music? When they’re younger, they will hopefully be. But, when kids become teenagers, they often dislike everything about their parents and see them as very uncool - so let’s wait and see. Will we be seeing songs related to the hardships of being a first time dad on your next album? I hope not. No one wants to hear about that… do they? Sheff ield has a massive young population. Do you have any words of wisdom? Wow. I could talk all day about this kinda thing. I just say follow your dreams. Anything is achievable if you put your mind to it. But don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Some people know what they want to do at 16. Others don’t realise until they’re 35 or even 40 what their path is in life. I wanted to be a film director. Then I ended up making music – but, before that I did landscape gardening, removals, scaffolding, editing, voice-overs. At 27 years old I was 30k in debt - and a year later I had the first of my UK top 5 singles and albums.

MonKEY MagiC This month, your favourite musical monkey has been sat in his bachelor tree compiling a list of the best Sheffield summer tunes. Get t’barbie on! Heaven 17 - Penthouse and Pavement

Plug, November 1 Eh up, now we’re talking! This tune takes me back to those golden days at The Limit nightclub. If truth be told, I was a bit of a rocker before Phil and his entourage came along and brought their synths into my life. I even sported an Oakeyesque fringe for a while… until mama monkey told me I looked like a tool and shaved it off. She had a point.

Kylie - Can’t Get You Out Of My Head

Motorpoint Arena, November 13 I tell you what, I struggled to get Kylie out of my head back in t’day. Some neets our lass would catch me watching Neighbours on mute with all the lights turned off – she wouldn’t half get the face on. Anyway, I’m glad Kylie is paying a visit to Sheffield this month; I’ve booked front row tickets so I can get the full experience… maybe even a cheeky flash of knickers.

Bondax - Baby I Got That

Sheffield University, November 18 I’ll defo be swinging by Sheff Uni next month to catch up with my favourite Lancastrian beatsmiths. These boys bring a bit of everything to the table: house, hip-hop, funk and disco – it’s all covered. This tune is just MY JAM – you get me? I swear, when they drop this one I can’t be held responsible for my actions; which includes chest beating, poo throwing and hanging from the ceiling. Just saying.

High Hazels - Misbehave

Leadmill, November 20 Me favourite dream-pop rockers return to T’Leadmill later this month with their lovely 60s guitar sound. They released this track a couple of months ago - and I’ve not been able to get it out of my furry little head since. Hazy guitars, longing lyrics and nostalgic romanticism – if this doesn’t tickle your banana, then I don’t know what will.

Renegade Brass Band - Take No Chances, Make No Changes

Foundry November 25 Ooh, Betty! These guy’s horns give ME the horn. Imagine ‘Brassed Off’ – but a bit more badass and with Pete Postelthwaite spitting mad rhymes over the music, yeah? I love bands with a big sound and these guys will absolutely blow you away. I’m all about that brass, you know? Join me at Foundry next month and let’s get down wi’ them trumpets.

Now get thee forth and listen - otherwise the monkey will be displeased. Never displease the monkey! http://tinyurl.com/o8dbyu9 For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk | 93

the hold steady

Fresh from the release of their sixth studio album; Teeth Dreams, American rockers The Hold Steady recently hit Sheffield for a show at Sheffield City Hall. Teela Clayton collared guitarist Tad for a quick natter. Your sixth album Teeth Dreams features what has been described as ‘lyrically dense storytelling’. Are the characters within these stories real or imagined? The new record has less characters - but Craig wanted to keep it a little more vague so that people could find themselves in the characters more. Craig would say that there wasn’t a relationship between the characters and real life but, as someone who has been making music with him for over 20 years, I know I hear people that we both know in them. New York where you hail from is one of the most glamorous cities in the world. Discuss… New York City is one of the most glamorous places in the world - but it’s also probably one of the roughest. It has a real disparate lifestyle where you have the richest people and you have the poorest. We probably have a lot more in common with the latter.

What’s the most audacious demand you’ve made on a rider? I make smoothies. A lot. So I’ll request fruit. Once I requested ziplock bags because I’ll take any fruit left over before it starts to go bad and I’ll throw it in the freezer so I can use it for smoothies. One time the people who were doing the rider must have misunderstood because they brought out these tiny bags and I was like, ‘no man, I want to put bananas in them!’

This was something really special, and for me the best night of the recent Sensoria festival. Quick history lesson; Connie Converse deliberately disappeared in 1974. She was an unknown and unappreciated singer/songwriter, years ahead of her time, who was never seen again. Recently discovered kitchen recordings of her have shown her to be a talented writer of beautiful songs, the like of which no-one else was performing at that time. Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell made it in the Sixties, but in the Fifties, the world wasn’t ready for this type of personal, confessional music. She became disillusioned with trying to make a living from music in New York, went back home and got a job in publishing, where she worked for what could well have been the rest of her life. When Nat Johnson first heard her music, she felt a real resonance across the years between herself and Connie, and while researching on the internet, happened upon post-graduate film maker Andrea Kannes - who had made The Connie Converse Documentary. With timely intervention from Sensoria, this Connie Converse celebration evening, entitled Roving Women, was the result. For openers tonight, Andrea’s film was shown, with Andrea herself there to talk about how the film was made. After that, Nat played her favourite Connie songs and the audience at the Cutler’s Hall were captivated and enthralled in equal measure. Connie Converse was a troubled soul, and her brother, sister and nephew who spoke in the film are in little doubt that she somehow took her own life in 1974. One fascinating aspect of her legacy was that she left behind a meticulously archived and indexed filing cabinet. It contained songs and essays, paintings and recordings, as though she knew one day someone would discover and appreciate her work. She even left notes for future archivists, telling them she hoped they’d be able to make some money from what they found. Andrea is trying to secure funding to make this material available as a digital resource, and I fervently hope she does. This brief glimpse into the world of this talented but troubled woman was a fascinating one. Mark Perkins.

Billy Idol Kings and Queens...

Fryars The Power Delayed almost four years, Fryars’ second album has been a while in the making due to, to put it simply, a few record company complications. And let’s leave it at that - because this album brings forth a totally unique sound that branches out from Fryars’ former Mika associated years. With recorded dialogue tracks emerging between the well-crafted synth-pop songs that Benjamin Garrett, AKA Fryars, is known for, the album evolves much like a movie soundtrack (see China Voyage). Power takes the listener on a journey from the intro of Power Up to the finality of Over And Out - giving it a very neat beginning, middle and end, this is one record you should listen to in its entirety rather than dip in and out of. Although the record label back and forths must have been frustrating to say the least, Power has been allowed the time to develop into something more than a simple straightforward pop album. Rachel Heward 7/10

With a rebel yell, he’s back for more (more, more). Crap jokes aside, the eighties punk rocker – a debatable title – has returned with his first studio album in almost a decade. Can you believe that a full eight years has passed since he released ‘Happy Holidays’? Quite possibly one of the most bizarre Christmas records ever produced. Time flies when you’re taking the piss. Thankfully, ‘Kings and Queens of the Underground’ ditches the mistletoe and wine malarkey for some unrepentant nods to the infectious pop-punk which spearheaded ‘Idolmania’ roughly three decades ago. Even at the tender age of 60, the vocals remain untouched; powerful and commanding as ever. He still cautiously toes the line between pop and punk as the albums kicks off in semi-bubbly/semi-raucous fashion, with tracks ‘Bitter Pill’ and ‘Postcards from the Past’ serving as the most obvious throwbacks to his earlier days. The second half of the record sees the pace of the record slow down somewhat, as he attempts – like, tries really hard – to sound profound and philosophical. However, this foray into reflective song writing quickly turns into one big egotistical lament about his glory days – “last night in the Roxy we f*cked on the floor… oooh golden years” he croons in ‘Kings and Queens of The Underground’. So, erm, missing the eighties much, Bill? Unfortunately, further examples of bland self-eulogising are present throughout the second half of the album as you get the impression that the artist is still struggling to adapt to – or indeed show an interest in – today’s world. That said, there are some solid tracks on this album; unfortunately, most of them are wholly forgettable. Joe Food 5/10

Wild Smiles Always Tomorrow

A mash up of Beach Boys pop and garage clatter with a bit of The Ramones, Wild Smiles’ debut album ‘Always Tomorrow’ combines decades of classic music to make a collection of resplendent, foot tapping songs. There’s contrast throughout the eleven songs; from timeless love ditties such as Fool For You (my personal favourite) to songs which depict the lows of modern life such as Hold On. It’s safe to say that this newly reformed band have been through a lot over the years, and this is projected through their heart on sleeve style songs. The album reaches out to the listener and, before you know it, you find yourself in the throes of a wonderful, musical trance. The catchy guitar riffs, and mellow but edgy voice of singers Chris and Joe, give this album a wonderfully distinctive sound. It’s safe to say you’ll be humming the songs and wanting to get up and dance. Wild Smiles have started their career with a powerful first album! Chloe Martin 9/10

PhiliPPa’s GOT TalenT

Sheffield singer-songwriter Philippa Hanna has been given the honour of being the opening act for Collabro and Lucy Kay on the Britain’s Got Talent Winners Tour - and she wasn’t even a contestant! The tour will cover 31 dates between January and March 2015, hitting Sheffield City Hall on February 21. Philippa is a folk artist. Her skilful song writing and guitar playing have enabled her to open for huge names such as Lionel Ritchie, Wet Wet Wet and Rebecca Ferguson. Her latest album Through The Woods was released in 2013 to critical acclaim - with tracks championed by BBC heavyweights Janice Long, Paul O’Grady, and Hardeep Singh Kohli. However, as Philippa is an independent artist with no formal representation, she has no major record label providing her with financial backing. As such, she’s turned to fundraising platform Rocket Fuel. Rocket Fuel allows fans to make donations to independent artists. The first target in her ongoing campaign is to raise the funds needed to complete the tour with Collabro. In order to cover the cost of transport, equipment and promotion, Rocket Fuel is an essential part of the journey for Philippa. To make a donation, and more info, see www.rocketfuelhq.com/ philippahanna. For tickets, head to www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk.

We could literally write a book on all the incredible live gigs which have taken place in Sheffield over the years; unfortunately, we ain’t got the time (or space in the mag) for that. So, instead, here’s a condensed collection of truly awesome shows which rocked various venues around the Steel city. arctic monkeys – The Grapes, may 13, 2003 “We’re a long away from T’Grapes now.” – Alex Turner, NME Magazine, 2013 Where it all began, eh? Four shy teenagers take to the stage in the upstairs room of legendary Irish boozer and live music venue, The Grapes. As Turner later admitted, the main goal for the young band was to avoid humiliation. Far from it, that evening the lads performed a selection of early tracks and covers, including Ravey, Ravey Club and Curtains Closed. Attended by a capacity crowd of 60 people, the band made £27 from a performance which would see them embark on one ‘eck of a journey to international stardom. milburn – Carling academy, may 24, 2008 A sweaty, emotional horde of Sheffielders packed out the Carling Academy to say an emotional goodbye to those Milburn boys. The atmosphere was electric; amidst heartfelt chants of “We love you Milburn, we do!” tears and stale lager mingled together in the crowd as they played What You Could Have Won for the last time and closed the chapter on a much loved era of local music. Pulp – motorpoint arena, December 8, 2012 Pulp returned to Sheffield for their first hometown gig in almost a decade. A sell-out crowd gathered to welcome home their prodigal son, who told them, “I still get scared when we play Sheffield. So thanks for coming and being so nice to us. A lot of these songs were written when we lived here, and the ones that weren’t are to do with it.” Aw, cheers Jarvis! sex Pistols/The Clash – The Black swan (mucky Duck), July 4, 1976 The Black Swan – better known locally as T’Mucky Duck – saw some of the biggest names in rock play on its stage; its reputation as a live music haven continued when it later became The Boardwalk – a venue which played an instrumental role in the ‘Sheffield Indie Wave’ during the mid-2000’s. However, on a Sunday evening in 1976, the venue played host to a group of four young novices, who’d only recently started rehearsing together. They were called The Clash and they nervously played through their first ever live performance before handing over to Johnny Rotten and co. – not many in the audience that evening would have known that they’d just witnessed a rock legend in the making. Black rebel motorcycle Club supported by Kasabian – The leadmill, may 9, 2004 As if BRMC tearing up The Leadmill stage isn’t enough to get you all giddy, this particular show was stolen by a lesser known support act known as Kasabian. Months before the release of their debut album, the four lads from Leicester played with an Oasis style swagger befitting of their talent. Opening their set with I.D., the band played through a selection of songs which would later become cult classics - such as Club Foot, Processed Beats and L.S.F. Ten years later, they headlined Glastonbury. 100 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

arctic monkeys/reverend/ milburn/harrisons – The leadmill, 22 January, 2006 What else can you say? A truly legendary gig line-up, which showcased just how strong the Sheffield music scene was during those golden years. For Sheffield music fans, it doesn’t get too much better than this! Kings of leon – The leadmill, June 26, 2003 On a warm summer’s evening, four strange looking hillbilly fellas got up on The Leadmill stage, in front of an audience who’d previously heard the band’s Red Morning Light EP and evidently saw a bit of potential in the group. Their suspicions were soon confirmed, as the band tore through their set leaving the few hundred or so in attendance certain they’d be hearing much more from the Kings of Leon. Much humbler back in those days, the band even hung about for the club night after. It’s hard to imagine the Kings of Leon swigging cans of Red Stripe on The Leadmill dance floor - but it happened, I tell thee! Def leppard/human league – The limit, september 11, 1978 The Limit, back in t’day, was a truly legendary Sheffield venue (ask yer mam or dad). In the 70’s, the local music scene was, quite literally, rocking. On this evening, two Sheffield giants took to the stage – albeit with entirely different sounds – and made a bit of history. You see, back then, rock music was the staple diet of most Sheffielders - until Phil Oakey et al began fiddling with their synths - and people visiting The Limit that evening witnessed the early moments of an electronic music wave which would sweep the city… and eventually the top 40.

You’re hitting Corporation on the November 18, are you excited to be back in Sheffield? Yeah, definitely! We’ve played at Corporation before, last year I think, I remember it was a really good gig. It’s been a while so we’re happy to be back - we’ve also got some new material to play. You’ve done loads of touring recently, we bet you’re knackered! Are you ready for a bit of a rest after this round? No way! We’re still working on the new album so we’re going to be busy finishing that. It’s almost ready to record, so we’re excited for that. You’ve been touring with some very influential bands over the year, being special guests for Korn and opening for Limp Bizkit… It’s been crazy. They’re bands we’ve grown up listening to - so it’s really very surreal. It was truly amazing. We can’t wait to do some more tours like it soon.

Speaking of tours do you have any funny tour stories? [Laughs] We always get asked about this. I can’t think of anything specific but every tour is absolutely mental. There’s always ridiculous and funny things that happen. You played Reading and Leeds this year opening the main stage - scary job! It was mindblowing. We played last year in the smaller tent, which is okay as people will come to specifically see you, whereas when you’re on the main stage a lot of the crowd won’t know you or are just walking about and seeing who’s on - so we were really unsure at first. The crowd were way better than we thought they’d be. I’d say it was our best show to date. So who’s a better crowd then, Northerners at Leeds or

Southern fairies at Reading? [Laughs] Definitely Northerners! Your latest single ‘False Idols’ came out in August, were you nervous about what the fans’ reaction would be? You kept them waiting a long time! Yeah, we did. I’ve got to say we didn’t really think too much about what the response would be, we were just really excited for the release and happy with the end result. The song was very different to anything that we’d released before, and I’d say the album is kind of going in that general direction. There are some pretty heavy lyrics in the single - what was the inspiration behind the song? It was about pinpointing who people tend to look up to, people in the media, politicians. Pointing out the fact that we idolise all the

wrong people and that we need to start looking up to the right people. A lot of bands and artists tend to steer clear of political or controversial issues in music, why do Hacktivist choose to write about it? It’s not something that we originally intended to do, we didn’t start out and say ‘we want to be a political band’ - it’s something which just developed while we were trying a few things. You get the vibe from our name. Although the music is political, we still keep that fun, party vibe. We just do whatever comes to mind. A lot of people find it refreshing as opposed to the countless bands who sing about ex-girlfriends! You’ve got quite an individual sound, how did you develop this particular style? Tim started it all and Jay was working in the studio - it was just a random experiment. Then I jumped in and joined and each thing started rolling. We didn’t even have a bassist or drummer for ages. So yeah, the style was something that just developed as more people got involved. Is there anything else coming up we should be excited about? Obviously there’s the tour, and we also have a new album coming out - hopefully next year.

rix exposed meets rixton. Words: Carl reid.

Manchester lads Rixton hit the ground running back in July – when debut single Me and My Broken Heart crashed straight in at number one in the UK charts. With follow-up tune Wait For Me out this month, and an appearance at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on the horizon, we caught up with bass/keys man Danny for a chinwag. Afternoon Danny, how’s your day been so far? Very productive, actually. I’ve been writing songs – rock ‘n’ roll. I believe you’ve been in the States recently. How was that for you? Yeah, it was a lot of fun - they’ve really taken to us there. We did North America. The best bit was the tour bus, mate – proper fancy – PS4s, the lot. You guys seemingly came from nowhere – hitting number 1 with your first single Me and My Broken Heart’. Where were you when you heard the news and how did you celebrate? We were actually backstage at Liverpool’s Echo Arena waiting to go on stage – all huddled around this iPhone that we were streaming it on. Just as they were about to announce it, Lewi accidentally popped the Champagne and it started going everywhere. I had to try and down it quickly… it ended up coming out of my mouth and nose. Right glam. You’ve got a gig at the O2 Academy here next month. What can we expect from it? Four lads, all best mates, having a laugh – not afraid to make fools of themselves. We always say to everyone ‘leave your problems at the door’. We just want everyone to have as much fun as we’re having. Would you class yourselves as a boyband? We’re a bunch of boys… in a band. At the end of the day, we write our own songs, play our own instruments, love performing, girls… everything that goes with it. For me, we’re simply a band. I believe it was yourself and Jake who first formed the band, right? Yeah, about six years ago me and Jake started a writing partnership. We knew then that we wanted to be in it for the long haul - not a flash in the pan thing. Charley was in another band at the time. He was with them for about 10 years before we came along and

essentially stole him. Lewi actually tried it on with Jake’s girlfriend at the time. She was like, ‘there’s this guy hitting on me… but he’s a drummer.’ Funny how things pan out. Jake’s dad’s Shane Richie. I’m gonna guess you’ve met him. What’s he like? He’s one of the soundest guys you’ll ever meet. He’s just like us. Likes a laugh, likes a drink… just a really sound bloke. What would you say has been your career highlight to date? We sold out the legendary El Rey in La – which was incredible. And playing Wembley was a big deal. People say ‘where do you go from there?’ For me, it’ll be about going back to Wembley and headlining it in our own right. Who would you say your biggest influences are? Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) is an amazing songwriter – you know it’s one of his tunes as soon as you hear it. Some people have referred to us as a British Maroon 5 - and we’re big fans of them… oh, and Bruno Mars is brilliant. He’s got some right moves too. Finally, what’s on the horizon for Rixton? We’ll have the new single (Wait On Me) out November 9, hopefully people will like it. We do, for what it’s worth. We’re heading back to America to tour with Ariana Grande, which’ll be mega, another tour of the UK – and the album should be dropping around March. Exciting times. catch rixton at the o2 academy 2 on november2. See www.o2academysheffield.co.uk for more.

November Man

Get On Up Given his larger than life persona, there’s an obvious expectation to any movie made about James Brown that it must live up to the man himself; that it be swaggering, extravagent, engaging and above all else, fun. For the most part, Get On Up delivers on those factors with absolute aplomb; but star Chadwick Boseman swiftly casts them aside with all the confidence and charm of the man himself. The story of James Brown’s rise from poverty to become of the planet’s defining musicians, Get On Up focuses heavily on Brown’s relationship with best friend and band member Bobby Byrd - the effortlessly charming Nelsan Ellis - as the megastar frontman navigates the pitfalls and temptations of fame and fortune.

Boseman is electrifying as Brown brilliantly embodying the performance that made the man the genuine article - but brings enough sincerity and presence to the role as to elevate it far beyond mere impersonation. With solid support from the likes of the reunited Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis, and a nicely against-type Craig Robinson; there are a bevy of top-tier performances at work in a film which only falls apart on worn biopic-cliches in relation to the subject’s childhood. When the movie’s in full-swagger mode, it’s a genuine delight and a good time for all; but in 2014, the antiquated traumatic childhood angle feels overwrought and merely a required add-on for an otherwise terrific musical drama.

Timothy Spall is an absolute revelation in the titular role, and Mike Leigh’s direction is almost on par with Turner himself; but a slavish eye for detail and a naval-gazing sensibility keep Mr. Turner strictly in the realm of arthouse fare and away from more accessible terrain.

With a slick marketing campaign and Pierce Brosnan back in the genre to which he so clearly belongs, it’s sad that The November Man fails to become the Neesonesque action thriller it’s star so clearly needs. It’s almost immediately apparent that Brosnan is better than the material, as his former CIA agent is brought out of retirement to face off against his estranged formerprotege - a startlingly blank Luke Bracey. What starts out as spy-vsspy however soon graduates into the all-too-familiar, as Brosnan’s Peter Devereaux becomes involved in a conspiracy surrounding war in Chechnya and a mysterious woman (Kurylenko), who may hold the answers. In it’s first half, The November Man is disposable enough actionconspiracy nonsense; when it tries to be complex however, things quickly fall apart and even Roger Donaldson’s taut direction struggles to hold things together.

Horns Hugely anticipated, Alexandre Aja’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s cultfave novel is a sublime mixture of dark fantasy, murky drama and black humour. Radcliffe plays Ig, a twenty-something who finds himself a pariah after being falsely accused of his girlfriend’s murder and awakens one morning to discover a pair of demonic horns sprouting from his temples. A startlingly atmospheric piece, bolstered by a great cast, a highly effective soundtrack and a chilling score by Robin Coudert; there’s something for everyone in Horns, a film which finally elevates its star above his former type-casting. Solidly performed, and with fantastical direction by Aja, Horns works as a contemporary take on the likes of The Crow. With massive cult appeal, some fantastic dialogue and a terrifically game lead in Daniel Radcliffe, there’s a lot of smirking fun to be had.

A passion project for Timothy Spall and frequent collaborator, writer-director Mike Leigh - “this is my seventh one of his”, he dutifully notes - it’s been a slow journey for Mr. Turner to reach the big screen. “He [Leigh] asked me seven years ago”, he recounts. “He said ‘Would you do me a favour and start learning how to paint?’” “I knew of him”, Spall says of artist J. M. W. Turner, the focus of Leigh’s latest work, in which he plays the lead. “I knew him because I went to school in Battersea and the only subject I was any good at was art and drama, and I used to sometimes stroll over to the Tate Gallery. It’s Christmas next month, a time to relax and enjoy the festivities with your family. The alternative? Stay isolated in your room playing this fall’s absolute must-have titles – it’s up to you. Either way, I’ve saved you the trouble of making your Christmas shopping list, for yourself at least, with three games that need to be played this holiday season.

Halo: THE MaSTEr CHIEf CollECTIon (XboX onE)This Why? – Consisting of all four core games in the Halo series, including Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, and Halo 4, this is an essential, and perhaps a reason to even purchase an Xbox One. If you’ve been distant from Halo the last few years or so, here’s an opportunity to play through every campaign mission, one hundred multiplayer maps, and so much more. It hits shelves November 14 for the regular price of a new release (£40-£45), which is pretty impressive considering the huge amount of content you’ll actually have instant access to. The beta for Halo 5: Guardians is also included for when the beta launches at the end of this year. THE EvIl WITHIn (PS3 / PS4 / XboX 360 / XboX onE / PC

Why? – It’s safe to say the horror-survival genre has gone a bit stale or completely off the rails (Resident Evil 6…) recently, and it’s widely believed The Evil Within will give the genre a kick up the bum so to speak. The game involves terrifying scenarios, monsters, and a true sense of survival that makes these games so scary in the first place. Judging from the gameplay shown to us so far, you can expect your heart to be pumping in fear as you try to stay alive using whatever means possible. It is directed by industry legend, Shinji Mikami, best known for creating Resident Evil, which speaks for itself as to why you need this game.

far Cry 4 (PS3 / PS4 / XboX 360 / XboX onE / PC)

Why? – The Far Cry series has only gotten stronger and far more better as its progressed, which tells you the developer really does care about improving the player’s experience with each release. Far Cry 4 looks to easily be the best so far, placing you in yet another hostile world of danger, guns, and elephants. Yep, elephants. They’ll be tons of guns, lots of missions to keep you occupied, and some pretty interesting characters along the way, who will only keep you wanting more of the narrative to make itself known. November 18 marks Far Cry 4’s release date – one for the diary. Queen Coal

Queen Coal tells an intensely powerful story of an industry in turmoil and one woman’s struggle at the front of the picket line. We caught up with Julia Ford, who plays Justine, to find out more. Hi Julia, if you can start giving us a brief description of your character Justine. She’s the ex-wife of Ian, and became very active in the strikes. Since then she hasn’t really been home or seen or spoken to anyone. It’s 2013 and Margaret Thatcher has just died and she gets a call from Ian as they said the day she died they’d throw a party. What made you want to get involved in the play? Well, I absolutely loved the play, I thought it was fantastic. I’d just finished the first page and I was grinning to myself. It’s truly a fantastic piece of work. It’s very funny, but there’s also confrontation and intensity. It has many different dimensions and many touching moments.

ShRek

when: may 27 – June 7 2015 where: Lyceum Theatre Tickets are currently on sale for Shrek The Musical, hitting Sheffield in May 2015, directly from the West End. Based on the award-winning DreamWorks animation, the show will follow the unlikely hero and his loyal steed Donkey on an adventure full of misfit fairy tale characters, kings and dragons. A must-see for all the family and guaranteed to sell out quickly. Tickets from £26, see www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk for more.

What did you find challenging when developing the character? I’m currently still exploring the character; we’re halfway through the rehearsal process so there’s still plenty of time! But it’s always quite challenging. I like to try and visualise what’s going on underneath - so although they may be saying one thing, they’re thinking something else. Given that Queen Coal is centred on the miners’ strike, do you think it’s a political play? I think it’s about how the audience interpret it, but I feel it’s more about family. It’s a very rich play so it’s about many things. Old friends and family trying to reconnect. I mean, Justine hasn’t seen these people for around thirty years; they have very little idea about where she’s been and what she’s been doing - so it’s about them rekindling their broken relationships. Catch Queen Coal at the Studio theatre until november 22, see www. sheffieldtheatres.co.uk for more.

Hitting the Lyceum theatre November 11-15 is Irving Berlin’s classic White Christmas. Presented by the influential STOS Theatre Company, White Christmas is an exciting theatre adaptation featuring 17 classic Irving Berlin songs. This heart-warming adaptation, directed by the legendary John Cumberlidge, is set to be the most expensive amateur shows ever put on by The Lyceum. Exposed caught up with lead actor Matthew Walker to find out more about the show. Words: Emily Beaumont. White Christmas is an undisputed classic film. Is it difficult taking such a favourite and making it current? The director is putting in a big effort to make it current and appealing to a modern audience. And what we’re trying to do is reinvent it. There’s a lot of added pressure - as the West End and West Yorkshire Playhouse are putting on professional productions this December - so we’re trying hard to attract audiences to Sheffield as opposed to the alternatives. What drew you specifically to this production and role? Performing on the Lyceum stage is a large factor that made me want to get involved. Also STOS

Theatre Company is very wellknown and respected and they have a large following - so this definitely influenced my decision. The role is also ideal for me, an old crooner singing and dancing, and Bing Crosby was legendary in the film. John Cumberlidge is also a legendary director. I recently saw Sunset Boulevard which he directed in the Isle of Man and it was brilliant. White Christmas features 17 classic songs by Irving berlin. Which is your favourite and why? There’s so many! I have to say White Christmas, obviously. Someone was telling me recently that it’s the most lucrative, most downloaded song of all time. It’s one of the most popular ever. It’s just very hard to choose a favourite. The last few plays put on by SToS Theatre Company have been critically very well received. Is there a pressure to live up to expectations? Oh, absolutely. They’ve been putting on productions for a long time. Both Our House and a Christmas Carol got amazing reviews - so you definitely feel the pressure to be as good or better. I feel a lot of pressure myself especially as this will be the first time I’m returning to the Lyceum since Sweeney Todd with Croft Theatre

Company. With a budget of £100,000, a lot of people are talking about how this is the most expensive amateur show the lyceum has ever put on. What can the people of Sheffield expect from it? Well, there were a lot of people auditioning for roles, and many didn’t get in. There’s been such a high standard in terms of talent - so unfortunately not everyone could be cast. I don’t know if I should be telling you, but there’s plans for it to actually snow - all over the stage and all over the audience - so that should be brilliant. We’ll see if it works! With set and costume, the budget really speaks for itself with what they’ll be like! and who would you recommend White Christmas to? Anybody. There’s a reputation that amateur dramatics only attracts middle-aged audiences - but I think all that’s now changing. With White Christmas being such a classic film, I expect a lot of young people have never heard of or seen it, so this will be their first exposure. It’s a Christmas classic which every one of all ages can enjoy. It’s funny; there are loads of songs and brilliant dancers, so I think it’s a production that can be universally enjoyed.

Factoids!

Legend has it that Berlin wrote White Christmas in 1940, while staying at the La Quinta Hotel in La Quinta, California. The first public performance of the song was by Bing Crosby, on his nBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall on Christmas day, 1941. The song made its movie premiere in 1942 hit Holiday inn, wit h Bing Crosby and Fred astaire. White Christmas won the academy award for Best Original Song in 1942.

exposed looks ahead to the eagerly anticipated arrival of the Spanish riding School of Vienna. Any horse lover knows that Lipizzaner stallions are the crème de la crème of the equestrian world. The pride of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, and champions of classical dressage, the equine breed are so prized that, in World War Two, American troops risked their lives to preserve the remaining Lipizzaner horses behind opposition lines. Fearing the Germans would kill the horses to feed their men, troops broke through German SS lines to rescue them. Ahead of The Spanish Riding School’s trip to the UK, including three shows here in Sheffield, we took a trip to their HQ to see what the fuss was all about. First things first then, if The Spanish Riding School is in Vienna - what the devil makes it ‘Spanish?’ “Back in the 16th century, Austria was a vast empire - and by marriage Austria was related to Spain,” managing director Elizabeth Gürtler explains. “When Ferdinand of the Habsburg family returned from Spain to Vienna, he bought elegant Spanish horses with him, bred between Andalusian, Arabian and Berber horses. Then Ferdinand built the riding centre, and the Viennese people called it a Spanish riding school. Even today, if Viennese people don’t understand something, they say – “that seems to be ‘Spanish’”. Vienna’s equestrian tradition dates back over 400 years - and the School’s current stock of 72 dazzling white purebred ‘Lipizzaner’ breed horses still come from the same historic six blood lines. Each stallion is treated like a prince and boasts his own equine nutritionist. The Lipizzaner breed are famous for their Haute Ecole excellence and ‘airs above the ground’ dressage movements - including Capriole, Levade and Courbette. Essential to The Spanish Riding School’s equine success is the special union between horse and rider. A new rider, joining the school in their teens, can anticipate a long career devoted to their

craft. Each new riding recruit spends four to six years under the guidance of an expert rider. They will then be promoted to Assistant Rider, and a young horse is entrusted into their care. It’s now the young rider’s responsibility to train his stallion to the level of performance, taking another 4-6 years, working closely with the experienced Chief Riders. It requires discipline to progress even this far; how else would the school maintain its cultural heritage? Lipizzaner stallions may be thoroughbred, but that alone is not enough to secure them a life at the Spanish Riding School. Only a select few are selected for classical dressage

training each year. A chosen stallion will meet its rider age four - and they’ll spend the next 20 years together. It takes six to eight years for a colt to become a school stallion, and longer still to reach ‘airs above the round’ level of expertise. Selected by his shape and character, a Lipizzaner’s qualities include persistence, stamina, strong hind legs and a strong muscular neck. We spoke to established rider Florian Bacher, who joined The Spanish Riding School age just 15 and has spent 12 years developing his riding skills. “I saw a video of the Spanish Riding School when I was 11 and knew wanted to work here,” he explains. Saying that, “every day is different,” Bacher will start work at 7am, coming back to visit the seven horses under his ward throughout the day. While for four centuries all riders would have been exclusively male, two female riders have been introduced in recent years. Elizabeth Gürtler sees this as an obvious step towards the future of the School. “It’s tradition only to have men, but according to the effects of time, the best riders in the world today usually are female; it was a must to have women. Some horses get along much better with female riders who have a ‘feel’ for them.” A chance to admire the ‘white ballet’ of Vienna is usually reserved for Austrian audiences alone. But, fortuitously, the Spanish Riding School and their exquisite stallions are travelling to Wembley and Sheffield this November. Joined by British equestrian stars and Olympic/Paralympic medallists Lee Pearson MBE, Natasha Baker MBE and Carl Hester MBE, the elite horsemen hope to capture English hearts. A rare opportunity to catch something very special indeed.
