food hall project This month, Exposed photoblogger Ellie Grace checks out the new Food Hall Project on Eyre Street. Freecycling perfectly edible food that would otherwise be wasted, and adopting a ‘Pay As You Feel’ approach, the students and graduates behind the project are forging social change through shared food. The cafe and kitchen is housed in a disused warehouse space and all of the furniture has been reclaimed and upcycled. With a menu that changes daily the food is of extremely high quality, and you’re welcome to pay whatever you like for it. You can also make a personal contribution by volunteering to cook for the city or by donating some food.

Game Over
Described as ‘Sheffield’s premier gaming night’, Game Over has become a roaring success in its first year, welcoming a regular attendance of over 200 people on a weeknight. Events are currently being held on a monthly basis at various locations in the city centre, and incorporate casual and competitive console gaming, including popular elite tournaments. There’s also live art, live music and mini market stalls all wrapped up in a busy bar environment. From the retro classics to the current gen consoles, everything’s covered here. This year Game Over are planning to start a retro games market in Sheffield and plans for an all-day gaming festival are underway, alongside plenty more of their monthly events and tournaments throughout the year. In celebration of their first year in action, the guys at Game Over are throwing a birthday bash at Bloo 88 on February 22nd, see facebook.com/ gameoversheff for more info.
AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18
Aiming to make Valentine’s Day one to remember for your beloved, you cook her favourite meal – spaghetti bolognaise (extra Hendo’s) – and leave a trail of food from the living room right up to the bedroom where she finds you chained naked to bed, covered head to toe in pasta and sauce, sporting a rather fetching gimp mask. By the time you’ve managed a muffled ‘Happy Valentine’s, love’ she’s already running back down the stairs screaming about how you’ve gone too far this time. Why bother, eh? CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19 Love is in the air! Actually, wait, nope… it’s carbon dioxide. My bad.
Kell Brook vs Kevin Bizier Sheffield’s very own boxing superstar Kell Brook takes on his latest challenger, Canadian-born Kevin Bizier, at Sheffield Arena on March 26th – and we at Exposed are giving you the chance to win tickets to the spectacular bout. Brook will return to what is sure to be a roaring home crowd to defend his IBF World Welterweight title for the third time, and with Bizier holding an impressive professional record of 25 wins and 2 losses, the stage is set for a fierce fight. Olympic Gold medallist Luke Campbell MBE will also be on the bill along with an all-British heavyweight bout between Dave Allen and Richard Towers. Tickets are proving to be hot property so this is your chance to secure your seat in the Arena. Just head over to exposedmagazine.co.uk/ competitions and answer the following question to be in with a chance of winning one of four pairs: Kell Brook is also known by which alias? A) The Special One B) Dr Steelhammer C) The Bronze Bomber
SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 People find love in unexpected places: Barnsley, for example. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 The stars of Pisces are burning brighter than ever, which means that – yep, you guessed it – you will make sweet love to a fish at some point this month. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Six US Office seasons into Netflix & Chill you begin to realise that she really
doesn’t want to see your pork sword. Possibly because you referred to it as your pork sword. TAURUS April 20 - May 20 Love hurts. Ask Uranus. GEMINI May 21 - June 20 You will find yourself with a case of weak knees after meeting someone new this month – possibly due to gout. CANCER June 21 - July 22 You will have to make a big decision or summat this week. LEO July 23 - Aug 22 Always the romantic, you light candles in the bedroom on Valentine’s evening, crack open a bottle of fizz and settle down on a bed covered with rose petals for what is sure to be
a magical evening of sordid internet browsing. VIRGO Aug 23 - Sep 22 You finally meet the girl of your dreams, but it turns out she was in Slytherin House at school. Just how will your parents, both proud Gryffindorians, take the news? LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Once again you scoff down your spouse’s edible underwear before she gets the chance to put it on. The sex remains average, but at least you’ve satisfied your sweet tooth.

LOCAL HERO
Down In Chinatown Happy Chinese New Year! And what better way to commemorate this occasion than by celebrating the council’s approved plans for a £65m “Chinatown” in the Steel City. New Era Development Ltd are behind the proposals for the 21-storey building which will include student accommodation, restaurants, offices, training facilities and a public square. The complex will sit between St Mary’s Gate, Bramall Lane and Sheldon Street, where KH Oriental Supermarket is located. The project will be funded entirely by Chinese investors. The whole scheme is set to be completed by 2018, opening up 400 new job opportunities. Director Jerry Cheung said the look and feel would reflect “the new era and future” rather than a “tired and dated” historic Chinatown familiar to other British cities. “New Era Square is a landmark development for Sheffield. It represents substantial investment for the city and is set to create a cosmopolitan, urban destination, including the new public square, to bring people from across the whole community together.”
“Took our lass to an owl and otter sanctuary, me. She loved it.” “The moron left a video of him masturbating into a pillow on the school camera. Then the school bully managed to get hold of it…” “I’ve been sucking on Fisherman’s Friends all day and still don’t feel any better!” “You call that a bush, pal?” “Literally, I must have had a sausage every day at 6th Form.” Ellie Goulding looks nice at times, but sometimes she looks like an anteater.
dean rowbotham
A distinguished guitar tech, Dean Rowbotham has spent time on the road with the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, 65 Days of Static and You Me At Six, but he’s now focussing on his role as Company Director at Bedford Guitars, providing custom-made products and services to the guitarists of this city. What’s your background? I used to be in a prog-metal band called Mirimar Disaster. All of our songs were about ten minutes long so we didn’t go too far. Both through the band and also working in a guitar shop called Academy of Sound I got to know Curtis and Lee from Bring Me The Horizon. I think they actually supported us for their first ever show. So I used to sort them out with guitars, and they texted me out of the blue one day to ask if I was interested in going to America with them to be their guitar tech. I spent seven years touring with them and various other bands in-between. What other local bands have you worked with? There’s a few. My background is mostly metal and I’ve worked with bands like While She Sleeps, but I’ve also worked with the likes of Milburn. I’ve done touring and building rigs for The Prodigy; not many people know this, but all their gear is stored in Sheffield. How was Bedford Guitars born? Bedford Guitars started three years ago in a little practice room in Canal Works, Attercliffe, which I converted into a workshop. I later found
out that the landlord was leaving, so I started running rehearsal rooms. Now there are 11 practice rooms and also a recording studio called Steel City Studio, run by Phil Gornell, and it’s a really cool place for bands. But it got a bit noisy, so I moved the shop out to Bradwell for a year before realising it was just too far out; I’m now back in the city centre on Milton Street. And how has business been since re-opening? Kind of ridiculous – 19 guitars in the first two and a half weeks. I’ll be putting up a blog soon introducing some of the new cable products we’ve recently developed. Even though we often work with touring bands, it’s not at all exclusive. We work with everyone from bands to recreational guitar players and everything in-between. So what’s the key to running a good guitar shop? Being able to offer high quality products at an affordable price is important. I also like to be clear-cut with my customers; I’ll give them an exact date when the jobs will be done for them. A lot of people who do guitar set-ups do it on the side of something bigger, but this is what we specialise in. It’s a specialised service.

Dear SP, I am a happily unmarried, VERY sexually active male – just living the dream here, amiright?! But now that I’ve reached my late thirties I’m getting worried that my sexual stamina is beginning to decrease rapidly. A few years ago I was averaging between 200-220 quality strokes during intercourse before reaching climax, but nowadays I’m lucky if I reach 150. Are there any techniques I could work on to get my stats back up? Jonny, Hillsborough Good Lord Jonny, ‘strokes’? This is the ancient art of love-making we’re talking about here, not a goddamn golf tournament. And buddy, to be frank, if you’re nearing the age of 40 then you should just be content with getting any tail at all. The most satisfaction guys your age tend to get is an uninterrupted peruse of Auto Trader while taking their morning dump. Anyway, back to the original point. My father used to say to me: ‘Listen, kid, if you can’t fully satisfy a woman within ten minutes of entry then what on earth are you playing around at in there?’ And if you’re busy counting each thrust while keeping one eye on the clock, then the odds are you’re not connecting emotionally with your lady partner, which, believe me, is the key to mind-blowing rumpy pumpy. Daily cock pushups, eating beetroot and praying to various love deities also helps. Yours, SP

Presented by musicians and club DJs Presley and D’Lear, the show incorporates alternative music and comedy delivered in a very unique and entertaining style. Hear the show live every Wednesday from 9pm-11pm on Sheffield Live! 93.2FM and online at www. sheffieldlive.org.

SAMUEL FOX’S UMBRELLA Sheffield: the home of steel, real ale and, erm, the modern day umbrella. Yeah, you ‘eard. It was in the small – and often rainy, one would imagine – village of Stocksbridge, situated 11 miles from the city centre, that Samuel Fox & Company produced the world’s first steel framed ‘paragon’ umbrella back in 1848, replacing the outdated whalebone design and quickly finding itself in high demand across Europe. The credit for this goes to Fox’s co-worker and friend Joseph Hayward, who devised the
revolutionary shift in brolly fashion. The story goes that Hayward was a favourite of the factory owner Samuel Fox and when an employee informed Mr Fox that Joseph was kipping on the job, he replied: ‘Thee go and mind thy work; he’s worth more to me asleep than thou art wakken’. So, dear reader, next time it’s peeing it down in the Steel City, you can thank fellow Sheffielders Joseph Hayward and Samuel Fox that you no longer have to hold a chunk of whale over your head.
@SentIntoSpace Here’s a photograph we took of the snow over Sheffield before it started to melt. We launched the balloon from Weston Park and let it go after building a snowman. We were a bit frozen but it was worth it!

THE CLIMBING WORKS If there’s one thing other than steel (and Hendo’s, obvs) that Sheffield is known for, it’s the great outdoors. With a good chunk of the city residing in the Peak District, it’s no wonder this is one of the go-to spots in the country for climbing enthusiasts. Of course, being up north means the weather isn’t always peachy, so on drizzly days thankfully there’s The Climbing Works for those wanting to indulge in their hobby. WHO’S BEHIND IT? Professional climber and brand representative Sam, international route setter Percy and Graeme from the British Mountaineering Council got together back in 2006 with the aim of building one of the best bouldering walls in the world. They’ve long since achieved that dream and it’s now the biggest of its kind in the UK.
TELL ME MORE... Seasoned climbers can get stuck into the extensive campus board, a 50 degree training board and will conquer plenty of challenges on the Competition Wall. However, this is also the perfect place for newbies to receive an introduction into extreme sports. Welcoming coaches are on-hand to offer free coaching sessions three times a week with route setting for all abilities. Yoga classes and massage sessions run alongside this to keep you in tip-top shape. NOT JUST FOR GROWN-UPS! The introduction of the Mini Works in 2013 means there’s now a designated wall for the development of kids’ climbing. WADS sessions are on offer to nurture young talent and Rock Tots is the perfect environment to enable toddlers to play and scamper around.
DID YOU KNOW? Many members of the GB Bouldering team train here for international events and The Climbing Works is one of their official sponsors. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CLIMBING? It’s great for building strength, flexibility and agility. You’ll also get a mental workout as each route is like a puzzle requiring patience, planning and analysis. KEEPING IT GREEN The Climbing Works have a lasting relationship with the outdoors and this is reflected in their ethos. If you walk, cycle or use the bus to get there, you will be rewarded with a free brew (locally sourced from Cafeology, no less). WITH AN INDEPENDENT SHEFFIELD CARD: New members get half price Mini Works or adult induction. Current members get buy one get one free on hot drinks.
Want to know more about Sheffield Independents? Head to independent-sheffield.co.uk and don’t forget to pick up your membership card for exclusive deals and offers from local businesses of every shape and size. 16 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

Welcome to Pi Law Direct The UK’s first barrister-led Personal Injury firm. Expert advice from the leaders in the field.

OUT TO
WIN
New barrister-led personal injury firm Pi Law Direct’s decision to set up base in Sheffield rather than London is part of a growing trend of businesses relocating up north. With the city having a strong history in law alongside excellent transport links and numerous social and cultural amenities, it was a no-brainer for the growing company, who saw opportunity in Sheffield as an up-and-coming centre for business. Pi Law are unique in the fact that they are the first (and indeed only) firm in the UK whose partners are barristers rather than solicitors. In the “chain of command”, it is the barristers who give the final word on most decisions in law, and deal with trials and hearings, so you know you’re in the best of hands. On top of that they’re also London barristers, and much like Harley Street doctors, they are some of the most highly regarded in the world. With their level of experience and expertise, you’d be forgiven for thinking they charge top rates too. However, depending on the type and value of the claim, the costs will largely be
recovered from the other side, and where any of their costs are to be paid by you, they can guarantee any deduction will never be more than 25% of any damages rewarded – and in most cases far less. All of this will be set out clearly before the start of the claim, so there will be absolutely no nasty surprises. Naturally, they also have a ‘no win, no fee’ policy meaning that if you lose your case you will not have to pay any legal costs at all. Sound fair? To make matters even better, if you want Pi Law to deal with your claims, they’re offering to do it entirely for free for Exposed readers. Where most firms might charge 25%-45% of the damages in terms of costs (meaning someone recovering £5,000 might only see £2750) you’ll get the full amount with Pi Law. 100% of the damages, just by saying you’ve seen this article!
MAKE A CLAIM
If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, you can call them freephone on 0800 999 4529 or email them at enquiries@pilawdirect. co.uk. It doesn’t matter where you live, most of the work can be done by telephone, email or letter, but if they need to meet with you that can either be done at your home, their offices or some other convenient location. BOOGIE BOUNCE With most of the UK and certainly the more health conscious half of the Exposed office taking part in January’s “dryathlon”, it felt like life had ground to a halt last month as everyone shut themselves indoors with a salad in a bid to save money and shift some yuletide pounds. Words: Rachel Heward
If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know we usually stick to challenges of the eating and drinking variety, but after all the excesses of Christmas, fashion writer Kelsie Marsden and I thought it was high time to jump on the fitness bandwagon. Literally. So with a ‘New Year, new me’ mentality firmly at the forefront of our minds, this month we decided to try our hands at Boogie Bounce, the NASA endorsed (‘bouncing is the most efficient and effective exercise yet devised by man’) trampolining fitness class.
Out of Step
We needn’t have worried about the near-freezing temperature of the draughty Penistone sports hall as it only took mere minutes of hurling ourselves around on the mini trampolines to feel the colour of our faces turn to a more than unflattering shade of crimson. Instructor Claire started us off with a simple jumping, bouncing and stomping sequence, but it soon became clear that Kelsie and I were lacking in the coordination department. As we desperately failed to stay in sync with the music, our concentration lapsed further and the whole situation quickly spiralled into fits of giggles and one or two near-brushes with the floor. Whilst we weren’t exactly naturals, I can definitely vouch for the level of fun to be had here. Which is something, I guess.
Out of Breath
As we bounced further into the class, the mini routines got trickier and trickier and we were introduced to moves like ‘frogging’ which, yes, looks more or less as ridiculous as you’re imagining right now. But this is where we had the edge. With a spring in her step Kelsie propelled herself to alarming heights during this move, making the whole ordeal look relatively effortless; though the same could not be said for me. The move that followed involved flailing your legs out to the side one at a time as high as you could – after just a few
of these I was required to take a quick breather to avoid a certain case of death by exercise. It’s harder than you think, this fitness malarkey.
Out of Luck
Just when we thought the workout was over Claire cheerily announced: ‘and now for the legs, bums and tums section of the class!’ Using the trampolines for push-ups, sit-ups and more often than not, can’t-get-ups, we eventually completed the class, having worked muscles I didn’t even know existed.
Verdict
Despite the complaining, I will admit that this was a seriously fun class, and it definitely beats the mundanity of the treadmill. However, with our shocking levels of fitness I don’t think we can really put this one in the win column as the other boogie bouncers put us to shame whilst we struggled to even keep up. We both agreed that we’d go again though – with a bit of practice you can see why it’s been dubbed one of the most effective forms of fitness. And when you do it properly, you can burn between 500 to 800 calories per session. If you’re interested in popping along yourself, simply email penistoneboogiebounce@gmail.com.

This month’s Exposed In Session feature has us standing inside an empty O2 Academy. It’s cold, very cold, with a floor still sticky from the previous night’s spillage. Though the involuntary shivers and smell of stale lager are more than worth it as we have indie-funk five-piece I Set The Sea On Fire for company; a band who, for my money, released the catchiest track from the local scene last year with their pre-album teaser, ‘Tastes Like Funk’. The quintet – Billy, Pete, Megan, Josh and Alex – have been working towards their
debut album, Sleep Now Suburbia, for the best part of four years now and have finally been able to confirm March 11th as the release date. We had a natter before the cameras started rolling on their live session. Which tracks will you be playing for your session with Exposed? Pete: We’ll be playing ‘Tastes Like Funk’ and ‘Worship’, they’re two of our heavier songs. Billy: Yeah, they’re both similar types of tracks. ‘Worship’ is a bit of a darker sort of song, obviously with religious themes and connotations, and it’s very riff-driven.

So you guys have been around for a few years, and have switched between styles and sounds over that time. Pete: Yeah, it started out like 7 years ago with me, Billy and another drummer – then Megan joined a year or two later. This line-up’s fairly recent; Matt only joined the band about two months ago. And what has Matt brought to the table? Josh: Nothing. *Laughs* Pete: A trumpet. So how would you say the sound has evolved to where you find yourself now? Josh: It’s kind of switched from a typical ‘clean indie’ sound to more of a grown-up, slightly heavier sound – a bit more driven and grungy. Pete: A lot of the early stuff we did was pretty electronic, with a few guitars playing over the top. I think, due to the influence of record labels, we were forced down the indie-pop route, which we didn’t really want to do. Since then, we’ve started exploring heavier genres and moved to a more riff-based sound. That sound appears to be going down extremely well. ‘Tastes Like Funk’ in particular has received plenty of plaudits and airplay. Did you know straightaway that you had a bit of a banger on your hands with that one? Megan: What hammered it home for me was when some friends who’d not seen us for a while came down to a gig and that was the tune they picked out from the set. It’s had a great reception at live shows.

Pete: I don’t think any of us immediately thought ‘that’s the one’ when we first played it, but our audiences seemed to pick it out. We actually thought we had better tracks! Billy: Yeah, that track has changed so much since we started out with it. It was quite a bare-bone, bluesy track at first, but we all added our own bits and it now has a lot of energy. Is the kind of fun and exuberance we see on that track something which will run through into the record? Billy: It is definitely a fun, colourful record – but it does have some dark undertones to it as well. Are there any particular themes you could pick out on the record? Billy: Definitely a sense of the loss of innocence in growing up; realising the world is a scary place. I think they’re key ideas. By the way, after listening to the single I was left wondering what funk would actually taste like. So what are the key ingredients in a funk sandwich? Pete: Marmite – you love it or hate it. Billy: Just drugs. Trippy drugs. Megan: A fusion of Marmite, LSD… and cheese. Lovely.

WORDS: LEWIS BUDDEN No other band has demanded the world’s attention quite like the Fat White Family in recent years. Since crawling out of South London in 2011, they have continued to push boundaries with front man Lias Saoudi bringing onstage nudity, masturbation and shit smearing to the table. 32 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

COVER STORY Understandably giving themselves quite the reputation, the gang have only ever been associated with anti-establishmentarianism and debauchery. Fat White Family first came onto many people’s radar through their left-wing (and tongue-in-cheek) activism, when members Saul and Nathan started ‘Yuppies Out’, a Facebook group that protested the opening of upscale Brixton bistro Champagne + Fromage by handing out White Ace cider and slices of Dairylea. This, combined with an iconic image of them waving their homemade ‘The Bitch Is Dead’ banner after Thatcher’s death, sustained the image that here was a group that embodied Cameron’s Britain, the genuine face of disillusioned youth staring back at society whilst happily opting out. Drug-addled, unsanitised and unpredictable – they are just what the UK music scene needed: a necessary reminder of what lurks beneath the Ed Sheerans and Sam Smiths of the world. Following all of the headlines, hype and coverage, Fat Whites took Champagne Holocaust, their debut album of unhinged anthems, around the world; accompanied with a plethora of frantic live performances. But with album number two soon to drop and a UK tour about to kick off, where does Fat White Family go from here? I caught up with Lias to find out...
Where in the world are you right now? *Groggy* Ermmm, I’ve just woke up. I’m quite hungover and in… err, Krakow… I’m in Krakow. Nice. You received a lot of hype and critical acclaim early after the release of Champagne Holocaust. Was the speed at which it all took off a positive or a negative thing? A bit of both really; it is what it is man, you know? It can be encouraging yet distracting at the same time. People say the band was born out of a squat in East London, right? No, the band wasn’t born out of a squat in East London. I’m not sure why people keep saying that? So you’re not still based there then? No, no. We have definitely moved on from that. So you have the second album coming out and a huge UK tour on the horizon. How do you feel The Fat Whites are going to adjust to the bigger venues? To be honest, we’ve gotten used to playing
bigger shows from our last few tours. A lot of festival dates have helped us with that as well. How do UK shows differ from other countries? You get treated better in Europe, but the drives are a lot longer. The accommodation is shit in the UK though, but the shows get better the further up north you go. I’m currently calling from Sheffield, so that’s good to hear! Sheffield’s great, man. I like Sheffield a lot. We have played up there quite a bit. You were raised in Ireland, right? Yeah, Ireland and Scotland – but my mum is from Yorkshire. Do you think that had an effect on the music you make now? Well, Northern Ireland is an externally bigoted place so maybe some of the bigotry has seeped into the music. In your latest video, ‘Whites Boys on the Beach’, you all decide to shave your heads. Any particular thought process behind that?

COVER STORY
I dunno – we just look for new ways to amaze ourselves, you know what I mean? How’s the new album going to differ from Champagne Holocaust? It has different songs on it… Any new influences or themes on the album? We got really into the Bee Gees. We like the Bee Gees and Donna Summer. Yeah, so lots of that. And you also have side-project The Moonlandingz. How’s that going? Yeah, we’ve just finished recording our album, which should be out by the summer – or maybe autumn. You’ve collaborated with Sean Lennon for the project. How did that introduction happen? We started working with him after we played a show with his band at SXSW festival in America. You even got Yoko Ono to record with you as well. Oh yeah, Yoko Ono features on the new Moonlandingz album, as does Randy from the Village People. It’s an all-star cast, man. So how was it working with Yoko? I didn’t really get to work with her. I met her first, but then she did the track afterwards. We had to do it all “the modern way”, you know? Is there a primary writer or creative in Fat White Family or is it a collective force? Me and Saul tend to write everything, but my brother writes some stuff too, and
Jack our old drummer worked on some stuff, but generally we just work things out in the studio. Roughly speaking, I write all the words and Saul writes the music but sometimes it will work the other way round. You’ve been quite honest about your apathy with the state of modern music. Is there any new music that you’re excited about? I’m excited by a band called Meat Raffle. If you going to check anybody out, check them out. What are your goals for the new album, Songs for our Mothers? Like, could you ever see Fat White Family headlining Wembley in the future? I don’t really know. I don’t really like that goal though. I think once you have done an album you should just forget about it and start worrying about making the next one. How long do you see Fat White Family running for? Could it go on for a Rolling Stones sort of span? I’ve got no idea. The membership and line-up changes quite a bit really. We have a cool line-up now that have produced the album, but I don’t really know man. I try not to think much further than a year in the future. If it lasts a long time, then it lasts a long time. What are you thoughts on the Bowie ‘super group’ that is apparently happening at the Brits? I think they should probably avoid doing it at all. A Bowie super group with who exactly? Chris Martin and Bono? Really?
Catch Fat White Family at Plug on February 22nd. Head to www.the-plug.com for tickets and info. 36 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk
Lias, ‘would you rather…’ Have to sellotape your own face on every morning or be forced to eat all of your meals through a letterbox? I’m not sure I could answer that… *pause* I think I would have to eat through a letterbox to be honest with you. Get a tattoo of Margret Thatcher’s face on your hand or only be able to listen to Coldplay for the rest of your life? Oh, obviously I would go for Thatcher’s face. I could definitely pull that off. Everyone would just think I was trying to be ironic and shit. Eat a bowl of Saul’s (guitarist) hair once or have to lick Adam’s (other guitarist) sideburns for a whole day every month? Awh, man it would have to be sideburns, I have no problem with that. Yeah, I would go for that one.

Towards the end of last year, Good Vibrations hosted a successful Charity Flash Day at their Ecclesall Road Studio for Breast Cancer UK. We spoke to artist Nick Kilby about what that entailed.
For those not in the know, what is a flash day? A flash day is where designs are pre-drawn by the artists and in our case offered out at a special rate. We generally hold them around specific dates such as when a Friday 13th falls on the calendar and Halloween or for charity events. Flash relates more to the heritage of Western tattooing; appointments and custom design is a relatively modern notion, with early tattooing built upon walking in and selecting a design from pictures that were hung around the wall. Our next big flash sale at Ecclesall Road will be on March 31st, as it’ll be our first birthday. What are the benefits of such a day? It is fun in a lot of ways and allows the artists a great deal of artistic license. Because the pieces are done at a reduced rate it allows us to pay back the loyalty of existing customers and makes for a great way of introducing new customers to the studio. In the case of the charity events, it allows us to raise money for worthwhile causes that we believe in. We already have an existing relationship with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, where a portion of the cost of each tattoo is donated to them. We also like to hold one-off day events such as the Sunday Flash Sale for Breast Cancer UK and have carried out reflexive charity events such as a limited edition t-shirt printed to help raise money for those affected by the Bataclan shootings that took place in Paris in November. When did the idea come about to put on the event? It had been bouncing around the studio for a while to hold a special event and as soon as we asked who would like to participate everyone stepped up to the plate. The artists donated both their time and resources on their day off, which is a massive contribution on their part as it’s a fast-paced environment when you have people queuing out of the door to get tattooed. We raised over £730.00 in just under 10 hours and we’re extremely proud of that.
Bluebell Wood Keen on ‘doing their bit’ the Good Vibrations team work closely with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and recently hosted a successful Charity Flash Day at their Ecclesall Road Studio for Breast Cancer UK. We spoke to tattoo artist Nick Kilby and Bluebell fundraiser Gail Parkin to find out how people can help support a great cause while getting tattooed. The hospice, a Sheffield-based charity which offers care and support to children with shortened life expectancy, has worked alongside Good Vibrations for years. With the sale of each Good Vibrations t-shirt or tattoo, a donation is made to the hospice. So the more tattoos purchased, the more money raised for charity. ‘I was approached
in 2013 by Kirk,’ said Bluebell Wood fundraiser Gail. ‘It’s not every day you get a tattooist approach you about fundraising but we’ve since raised over £1200, which is absolutely fantastic. Anybody choosing to get their body art done with Kirk and the guys at Good Vibrations, or getting hold of one of the t-shirts, is indirectly supporting Bluebell Wood.’

The lucky winner will get the chance to join the UK’s top beer experts in deciding which UK breweries should walk away with the coveted gold awards. Nick Stafford, SIBA’s commercial director, said: ‘The beers in the SIBA national final showcase the best of the best in British brewing. ‘Opening up a judging spot to a member of the public will give us another perspective. Perhaps they will be an avid home brewer, or just someone who has developed a passion for drinking craft beers in some of our finest pubs.’ Think you’ve got what it takes? All you have to do is tell SIBA in 100 words or less why you should be considered for the judging position. Simply title your entry ‘SIBA National Beer Judge Competition’ and send via tinyurl.com/ BeerXcomp by February 14. For more on BeerX, head to beerx.org.
Viva La Revolucion!
Sheffield’s Revolucion de Cuba kick-started their brand new brunch menu last month by offering free meals to some of their loyal Facebook followers. Never ones to miss out on some free grub, we got in on the action one Sunday to see if it was really as good as it sounded. Served between a respectable 11am-2pm, we were only too pleased not to have to drag ourselves out of bed early to make the most of this exceptional offer. It wouldn’t be brunch without a bloody Mary – and the ones De Cuba served up certainly packed enough punch to blow any cobwebs away. The brekkie burrito stuffed with sausage, chorizo, egg, beans, jalapenos and melted cheese topped with crispy bacon hit the hangover nail right on the head and the Spanish omelette was equally delicious. The spicy chorizo and morcilla sausages balanced perfectly with the light fluffy egg and spring onions, and the manchego cheese and fried potatoes finished the dish off perfectly. Unfortunately the freebies are no longer on offer but the brunch menu is available every Saturday and Sunday – with bottomless mimosas and bellinis at the ready.
Head to www.revoluciondecuba.com to see the menu and call 0114 279 9250 to book.
New Vibes As of January this year the illustrious Yellow Arch Studios announced that its café-bar will be open seven nights a week. Located in an industrial quarter a stones-throw away from Kelham Island, the multi-purpose venue is now open from 6pm onwards. The move comes after the studio, built in the late ‘90s as a space for musicians to practice, acquired a drinks license last February – the first to do so in the UK. The vibe is intimately Moroccan, with candlelit tables and a piano tucked in the corner. Catch the esteemed open mic night on Thursdays at 7.30pm and you can also use the space as a reading club, jam session, board game night or anything else you might fancy, just contact events@yellowarch.com. Cheeky Monk-ey
Ecclesall Road’s newest venue for bar-lovers with a fondness for classic cocktails, craft beer and music of the funk and soul variety opens its doors on Saturday February 6th – and everyone is welcome to the launch party. After already finding considerable success in Matlock, Derbyshire, Monk Bar has decided to open its doors in the Steel City in the former D’Michaels venue. Opting out of the gastro-pub identity, Monk Bar keeps things simple by deciding not to do food and focusing entirely on their comprehensive drinks menu. Made up of around 40 cocktails, as well as selections of wine, craft beers, champagne and prosecco by the glass, there’s a tipple for everyone. We popped down mid-refurb to gain a sneak peek of what Monk Bar will involve – plenty of comfy Chesterfield sofas, soft lighting, exposed brick and a beautiful distressed wooden bar by the looks of it. With a beer garden opening by Easter to while away the first sunny months of the year, it seems Monk Bar has its sights set on success. www.facebook.com/Monk-Bar-Sheffield
Deliverd deliverd.com THE PLACE
The whole city! Online catering service Deliverd make use of Sheffield’s chefs and kitchens to bring you healthy, affordable meals delivered directly to you, whether at home or at work. After browsing the website through their list of mouth-watering meals, we thought it was about time we had a decent lunch at Exposed HQ, rather than relying on the usual scoffing of half a packet of hobnobs. Their online system allows you to order multiple meals in advance, so we had two sent to the office on a Tuesday afternoon, then foreseeing a lazy night the following Thursday, booked one to be sent to home that evening. You could literally order all of your week’s meals in one go if you so wished.
THE FOOD
Seeing Red
The pinnacle of Texan BBQ cuisine, Red’s True Barbecue, is coming to the steel city. It will be located in the old Café Rouge unit on Ecclesall Road, so get ready to tempt your palate with smoked prime cuts, slaw, glazes and ribs. Our pals across the pond know how to cook a hearty meal or two and popular venues are currently situated across the north in Manchester and Leeds, and now Sheffield is getting a meaty slice of the action. Doors open on April 15th 2016. Join their newsletter to win tickets to preview events and more at truebarbecue.com/ Sheffield. Follow Reds Barbecue on Facebook: www.facebook. com/RedsBBQSheffield
At the moment Deliverd only have a set menu in place – they will be rolling out their app and partnering up with more local kitchens over the coming months but are testing the waters with one meal a day as it stands. But this is a good thing; by not doing too much too quickly, they have perfected the formula and the dishes all look phenomenal. Tuesday’s meal was Moroccan chicken thigh with harissa spice, quinoa, roasted pepper, tomato, carrots, red onions and chickpeas with a coriander and lime sauce. The meals arrived in boxes with a comprehensive list of ingredients, nutrition info and allergens on the package. It could be eaten hot or cold,
54 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk
but we decided to follow the instructions and zap it in the microwave to add some extra heat to the spicy dish. The aromatic chicken was beautifully tender and the fresh and zingy sauce complemented the chilli and cumin flavours wonderfully. The dishes were incredibly generous on portion sizes too, leaving us well and truly satisfied (and falling asleep at our desks). Thursday’s ‘Protein Salmon’ was equally tasty, consisting of a salmon fillet with puy lentils, green and edamame beans, flaked almonds, cherry tomatoes and a boiled egg. Flavoured with garam masala, wholegrain mustard, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, it was absolutely delicious – and nutritious! Not having a microwave at home (stone age, I know) I had this one cold, which I think might have actually been better.
THE VERDICT
While it may initially seem odd to have to heat your own meal, it actually makes total sense. Unlike your average takeaway the food doesn’t arrive lukewarm, greasy or spoiled from the journey. It’s chilled so you can have it whenever you want, and most of the meals can be eaten cold if you prefer anyway. The instructions couldn’t be simpler – there are even tips on how to plate it perfectly! At just £4 a meal including delivery, we were left wondering why we would ever cook again.
DELIVERING HEALTHY CHANGE
In a bid to revolutionise the convenience food industry, Deliverd partner up with kitchens across the city to bring you healthy, affordable, chef-made dishes. It’s fast food that’s not compromised on quality or flavour; unlike other delivery services these dishes are designed to be transported so there’s no chance of them arriving lukewarm or spoiled. The food is created by chefs, prepared and cooked to a certain point and then left to chill. It’s delivered directly to you and when you’re ready you simply have to follow the heating (some can also be eaten cold) and plating instructions carefully provided by the chef, usually taking no longer than a couple of minutes. This way your food is served at its absolute best, when you want it to be.
What’s on the menu?
It’s all about offering up exciting, flavoursome and healthy food to make you feel good. Think Moroccan chicken, pork belly chow mein, candied salmon, brisket and beans and vegetable curry. A full list of ingredients and nutritional information like number of calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat content is provided for each dish too, so you know exactly what you’re getting. What’s more, each dish is just £4 including delivery.
Be a partner!
Make use of the quiet parts of your service by partnering up with Deliverd, who are offering the boost of extra business when you might need it most. Whether you’re a large restaurant, small café, outreach programme or just a talented home cook, it’s your chance to have a more productive and profitable day. Deliverd will provide you with everything you need including the right packaging and advice about what their customers like and what’s best to transport. Already involved in Sheffield are the likes of Bia Comida and charity The Cathedral Archer Project, where Deliverd provide skills-based training to individuals, which in turn leads onto qualifications and hopefully long term employment.
Sign Up Now
Head to the website at deliverd.com to sign up and keep an eye out for their new app, which will be launched later this month. With this you’ll be able to schedule a week’s worth of dishes in advance – this can be from different kitchens and can be delivered to different locations at varying times. The process focuses completely on your needs. Take your pick of the best of what the city’s kitchens have to offer and get stuck in! Head to www.deliverd.com for more info

The University Arms
197 Brook Hill, Sheffield S3 7HG Tel: 0114 222 8969 // www.facebook.com/universityarms THE PLACE
Tucked away behind Brook Hill roundabout, The University Arms and its gem of a beer garden serves as a popular summer destination for both students and locals in the steel city; but the real ale hotspot also provides great sanctuary during the winter months, offering a range of hearty pub dishes alongside their ever-changing line-up of guest beers. Stepping from the cold into the cosy pub surroundings, we were greeted warmly by the bar staff and found a table.
THE FOOD
After a recent revamp of their lunchtime and evening menus, served 12-3pm and 3-8pm respectively, there’s now a healthy range of mains, sharers, sides and desserts on offer, consisting largely of traditional pub classics such as fish and chips, homemade pies and burgers – plus, I’m happy to report, no pulled pork in sight! I opted for the British pub staple of fish and chips, while my partner chose the chicken and bacon melt – accompanied by another round of local ales, First Light American Pale and Farmers Blonde, for good measure. The food arrived in good time and the portions were plentiful; mine a large 10oz cod fillet in crispy beer batter sided with a generous helping of chunky cut chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. The batter was nice and crunchy and the flaky fish inside cooked perfectly, while tangy tartare sauce and lashings of Henderson’s Relish reaffirmed the simple yet scrumptious status of the dish. The chicken and smoked bacon melt came covered in melted cheddar cheese and drenched in a sweet hickory barbeque sauce, providing perfect dipping opportunities for the chunky chips. Stuffed but still tempted by the dessert menu, we chose to share a chocolate cookie ice cream cake which provided a sweet, chocolatey end to the evening.
THE VERDICT
Simple but classy British dishes done well, The University Arms blends tradition and taste perfectly, showing its ability to cater to food-lovers just as well as the beer aficionados.
This Is The One Launching in Sheffield on Thursday February 11th, Be At One has become an institution since its inception back in Battersea in the early ‘90s. Since then there have been smatterings of venues opening across the UK. The company is known for its array of cocktails including classics like Sex on the Beach and Side Car as well as unique, modern twists with such puntastic titles as ‘Show Me The Monkey’ – a Whiskey-based drink with apple, mint and Drambuie. Located at the top of Devonshire
Street opposite West One, expect lush interiors and polished décor, without the snobbery – bar staff at other venues have been known to dance on the tables alongside drinkers. They will also offer cocktail masterclasses on their ‘All Shook Up’ nights, where you will be tutored by the best in the biz in a relaxed atmosphere. The ethos of Bar At One? ‘Oldschool spirit and a pretensionfree attitude’. We’ll see you there! To make their cocktails at home, download recipes on the website: beatone.co.uk.

Bradford-born magician Dynamo’s arena tour is a far cry from his humble beginnings. Raised on a council estate with his mother, Steven Frayne, as he was originally known, eschewed the trappings of working class life to become one of the most recognisable stars on the scene. His street acts have brought about an era of innovation in magic and with celebrity guest appearances on his Channel 4 show Magician Impossible, he’s garnered the attention of Hollywood and royalty alike. Erin Doyle caught up with the elusive northerner to find out about his upcoming tour. Because of high demand, you’ve added extra tour dates. It must feel good! It’s mad. When I started I was only doing ten shows; now I’m doing 105 a year. For bands or really famous artists it’s expected but for a magician it’s insane.
Especially considering you hail from good ol’ Bradford. How was it growing up there? I didn’t have the easiest time at school. Once on the way home some bullies put me in a wheelie bin. My grandpa did magic, so he taught me this trick to make myself really heavy. From that point on the bullies couldn’t pick me up and that was when I got into magic. I’ve always wanted to cater to young people so I use technology. If I did Paul Daniel’s style of magic now it wouldn’t work. People have much more available at the touch of a button. In the digital age the possibilities are limitless. That must make it difficult for a performer. Are there any tricks you find too outlandish? There were things on Magician Impossible that terrified me. I’ve never been a fan of heights and in series two I went down the side of a huge building. I’ve levitated above the Shard as well, but it’s good to overcome fear. I constantly need to push the boundaries – for my own sake more than anything. Obviously I want to do it for the fans, but I want to improve for myself. Speaking of your fans, how’s the reaction when you go back home? Are people constantly asking you to perform? I can’t walk around anymore without being recognised. Even if I’m just buying milk they’ll want a trick. But I can’t complain now, because I tried hard to get people’s attention for 15 years! You’ve caught the attention of people like Jay-Z and the Prince of Wales too. Do you ever get starstruck? Not really. Usually if I meet someone famous it’ll be on a talk show so they meet me as a celebrity in my own right. I’m not great at talking but if I’m performing in front of them I’m confident. The Sheffield shows are coming up soon. What can we expect? It’s come a long way. I’ve dedicated it to my grandpa – it’s a family story. My grandma’s got a cameo too. She’s got more fans than me! The show is nothing like you’ve seen before: it’s very different and immersive. Prepare to get very involved. There’s one thing that many people say about stand-up Joe Lycett: he really makes it look easy. As the Birmingham-born comic goes on tour with the puntastically titled That’s The Way, A-Ha A-Ha, Joe Lycett, audiences across Britain will be able to see his seemingly effortless stage manner and performance style up close. “When it’s flowing, it feels glorious. I think it’s all about the work I’ve put into this over the last eight years that allows it to happen and it then becomes about instinct. Being told that it’s being made to look easy is the greatest compliment I could be paid. I’ve always wanted to create this persona on stage that people watch and don’t feel as though they’re watching a show; I’m at ease so they’re at ease.” With his new touring show, Joe Lycett will be taking audiences to various different places with his material. He’ll be sharing his recollections of the campaign he launched to get himself on a high spot in Attitude magazine’s Hot 100. It clearly worked, as he made the number ten position in the company of such luminaries as Tom Daley, David Beckham and Zac Efron. “I was 57 last year and they were all a bit ‘who?’ But after a few tweets saying that it would be a travesty if I didn’t win this year, they sent a private message saying ‘are you available on this day to come along?’ Next year, I’ll canvass someone really inappropriate like Vladimir Putin. It’s such a silly event, but that issue of the magazine sells really well and gets people talking.” Also part of the show is his by-now trademark online campaigns to prank and shame individuals and organisations who have wronged either Lycett or others. In the past he earned some comedy miles with his campaign to have a ridiculous parking fine challenged and in this show, he manages to brilliantly turn the tables on an email spammer. Having established himself as a fixture on the circuit and with three strong solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe under his belt, Lycett is also a familiar face on TV for comedy-watchers. As well as 8 Out Of 10 Cats, he’s appeared on Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Live At The Apollo, while on Comedy Central’s Drunk History, he chatted about Dick Turpin and the Kray Twins with some choice Prosecco and Sambuca running through his veins. But in the past 12 months, he’s put extra focus on the scripts he performs on stage in order to make his live shows as good as they can possibly be. “This year I’ve found my rhythm with writing. It’s been a long time to find it though; I’ve really struggled in the past. But now I’ve done a month of the show in Edinburgh, I’m really excited about refreshing, adding and honing material for the tour. This is the second time I’ve gone on tour with my own show and I’m excited about it just as I was terrified about the first one.” Lycett has previously described going on stage as like entering the ‘hellmouth’. This seems like an unlikely term to use for a place that seems to be a home from home for him. “About a year ago, I did a gig with a comic called Mat Ewins and often comedians will say something like ‘see you on the other side’ just when you’re about to go on. He said ‘see you in hell’ which really made me laugh and that’s where that word came from. It comes as a welcome relief from the nervous energy. Once I get the first laugh, I’m fine. I might chat with the front row, but if you’re not geared up then sometimes it’s better to simply open with a gag. No one’s expecting the killer stuff in the first few minutes.” With Joe Lycett, the killer stuff is always just around the corner. Catch Joe Lycett at The Octagon on February 17th. Exposed Meets The Coral With a career spanning over 15 years and in surplus of one million UK albums sold, The Coral’s long-awaited return after a five year-hiatus from writing and touring is upon us. Their eighth studio album, Distance Inbetween, is scheduled for release on March 4th with a full UK and European tour also thrown into the mix. Callum Hay caught up with lead singer James Skelly to talk past, present and future with the Merseyside indie-rockers. What makes 2016 the right year to get back together? It was just a natural thing to do. We had the songs to justify it, so it just felt right to get back together. It wasn’t a forced thing; we just thought it was the right time for us all. You teased the fans by putting out unreleased album Curse of Love in 2014, but how does it feel to be releasing brand new music as The Coral again? Oh, it’s dead exciting. Everyone seems to like the new song [‘Chasing the Tail of the Dream’] so that’s obviously a good sign for us. I don’t feel particularly nervous about the record; perhaps we did on the last one, but now we don’t have the label pressures. Also, the previous record was the first without Bill [Ryder-Jones], so that added a bit more pressure as well. We don’t have to worry about that stuff as much anymore. Having heard ‘Chasing the Tail of a Dream’, it sounds like a thicker and heavier departure from the band’s previous record. Does the same apply for the rest of the album? Yeah, it’s definitely true that the album has a heavier sound about it. There’s almost a sort of echoey-spookiness about it – you can hear certainly hear the Joy Division influence there. What other influences have found their way onto the record? There’s a few: Cream, Robert Johnson, a bit of Krautrock and some of the old bluesy stuff we’d been listening to. I taught myself a load of the old blues riffs on the guitar. It’s not just music that influences things though – books, films and comics also have an impact. How has the way you approach writing music changed since the early days?
There used to be pressure to make hit singles that didn’t necessarily follow the album, which sometimes meant compromising. This album has no compromise. You brought in Paul Molloy [The Zutons] on guitar as a replacement for Bill. I imagine he was the ideal candidate? Yeah, the recording process started with just the four of us. Ian [Skelly] and Paul have been playing together in Serpent Power, plus I’ve known Paul since I was 17. He was actually one of the first people I met on the Liverpool scene. We were both into stuff like Jimi Hendrix and the Small Faces, so we clicked really well. When he came in he was playing some really cool stuff so it was just a natural fit. You’ve often opted for more traditional recording techniques such as recording straight to vinyl in a handful of takes. How do you think this distinguishes The Coral’s sound? Yeah, we don’t want to sound like all the other stuff you hear now. Everyone is using the same plug-ins and stuff like that so it doesn’t sound any different. We’ve recorded live, done two-takes and most of the time we picked the first one. That way it doesn’t sound too slick, which is precisely what we want. Does not caring as much about the reception make the writing process much less constrained – and a bit more creative, perhaps? It’s not that we don’t care as much; we were just far more relaxed about writing it. It’s like being a boxer: when you’re at the start of your career you’re more nervous and keen to impress, but by the end you know the job and how to get it done. So you’re back on the road and your Sheffield date at The Leadmill date has already sold out. What can we expect? We’re hoping to put on something a bit different. A lot of people these days – apart from some alternative bands out there – don’t put much thought into the live performance. We’ve been thinking a lot about lights and projections, about mixing old and new songs. Hopefully we can justify the great response the new music has received so far.
The Coral will release Distance Inbetween on March 4th and play The Leadmill on March 11th. Album pre-order and gig tickets are available here: www.thecoral.co.uk

Submotion Orchestra Colour Theory
Their Octagon show was the surprise discovery of Tramlines 2015 for me, so I’ve been anticipating their new album with relish, and thankfully it more than lives up to expectations. Submotion Orchestra are a seven-piece from Leeds, although their music is far from what you might expect a ‘northern band’ to sound like. They create a jazzy, sparse, rhythmic and often driving sound, which is all-enveloping, taking the listener from dubstep to ambient groove and beyond. Tracks such as ‘Illusions’, showcase the vocal talents of Ruby Wood, but there are also other guest vocals on hand for some tracks to lend variety and depth to this, their third album. From the opening instrumental track, ‘Jaffa’, this is clearly a step forward in their studio-recorded output, and if you’re looking for an infectious groove, ‘Amira’ is a future floor-filler, if I’m any judge. For me they are in the same arena as The XX and London Grammar, but with a more epic, jazzy groove undercutting it all. This album is the perfect way to brighten up the dark and dismal days of winter, with its breezy, spacious sound. I can see this being an album I come back to again and again this year, so join me in putting the Colour Theory to the test, and immerse yourself in the Submotion Orchestra. MP 8/10
PUMPIN’ ON MI STEREO THE RAKES Capture Release
Theory: if the music faded at an indie disco populated by a throng of twentysomethings and a solitary voice was to shout ‘22 GRAND JOB!’ the response, I guarantee, will be a mass holler of ‘IN THE CITY, IT’S ALRIGHT!’, such was the iconic status of the track from the London band. Their debut album pays further homage to the struggles faced by young professionals sucking every last drop of hedonism from the weekend before Monday rears its ugly head. The overall result is an infectious collection of straightforward indie rock bangers, still as fun today as they were a decade ago. The Rakes eventually came to embody what was both so enjoyable but ultimately flawed with the ‘indie band landfill’ of the midnoughties: catchy, accessible tracks but lacking any real depth or authenticity to ensure long-term survival. JF
The Savages Adore Life The sophomore record from this London post-punk outfit grabs you firmly by the nads within roughly, oooh, let’s say ten seconds, as roaring guitars are combined with the fevered vocals of Jehnny Beth echoing “If you don’t love me, don’t love anybody” during opener ‘Love Is The Answer’. And the vice-like grip exerted by the all-girl four-piece doesn’t relinquish in the slightest as you are dragged across ten dark, dramatic and deeply candid tracks. The sound is unforgivably grungy and tribal, yet remains tight and never quite slips into the chaotic; the fury just bubbling below the surface as the band explore love and its many associates – jealousy, loneliness and lust, to name a few. ‘Adore’ sees the band at their most emotionally intense – “Is it human to ask for more? Is it human to adore life?” Beth ponders – before building to a howling crescendo and finish. Love and sexual conquest is explored in ‘Slowing Down The World’ and ‘I Need Something New’, while the raucous ‘T.I.W.Y.G’ warns of its inevitable sting – “This is what you get when you mess with love.” Every twist and turn on the journey is accompanied by a wall of distorted guitar and devious bass lines. Loud, fearless and captivating, it’s an intriguing record showcasing some of the most personal song-writing you’ll hear all year. 8/10 JF
Villagers
Where Have You Been All My Life? The Irish folk outfit return with latest album Where Have You Been All My Life? – and it’s an opportunity for the band to reflect upon progression since their Mercury Prize nominated debut Becoming The Jackal came out in 2010, with a strippedback record containing live performances of songs from the bands past three albums. Recorded at London’s RAK studios, the album sees old favourites get a make-under as the multi-track layering and synth-infusion existent on some older tracks is relinquished. This gives way to an acoustic experience which is both minimal, understated, and in parts visceral. Villagers’ affinity to atmosphere is testament to Conor O’Brien’s talent both as a songwriter and as a vocalist. Though, naturally, originality is limited as the tracks are familiar, it would be unfair to cast this album aside as simply a collection of acoustic performances reminiscent of Saturday night talk shows – there is more thought here than that. Fat White Family
Plug // February 22nd // £12 Few bands today embody the nihilistic spirit of rock and roll quite like the Fat White Family. In fact, scratch that: nobody does. The band has a menacing reputation influenced by sleazy lyrics and controversial on-stage antics (lead singer Lias Saoudi once defecated on the stage at one Sheffield venue. True story.) The Orielles, The Amazons and Femur
Bungalows and Bears // February 11th // Free For this month’s Forge Presents, the University of Sheffield radio team have brought in a killer line-up for their first event of the New Year. The sunny melodies and carefree lyrics of The Orielles has seen them grab the attention from the likes of Steve Lamacq and NME. Joining them will be the Amazons who come from a slightly heavier side of the indie rock spectrum and rounding off the bill are local lads Femur. And best of all, you can catch these three great bands for free. www.bungalowsandbears.com

Despite the high likelihood that the majority of tonight’s audience were pubescent, acne-ridden teens during Alien Ant Farm’s early-noughties heyday, the decade and a half that has since passed clearly hasn’t lessened Sheffield’s affections for the Californian quartet’s irresistible pop-rock charms. In recognition of ANThology’s fifteenth anniversary, this tour has seen AAF perform their major label debut record in its entirety at a number of sold-out shows across the country; and you’d be hard-pressed to attend a Corporation gig as jubilant and joyous as this one all year. AAF’s opening one-two of ‘Courage’ and the euphoric ‘Movies’ whips the crowd into a frenzy of new millennium, nostalgic revelry. Unsurprisingly, this enthusiasm does diminish during the album’s lesser-known songs – ‘Stranded and Wish’, for example – but to call this South Yorkshire appearance anything other than an absolute triumph, would be utterly untrue. Welcome renditions of ‘Glow and These Days’ – the pick of the bunch from 2003’s overlooked follow-up truANT – only intensify the sense of anticipation ahead of the show’s finale, where the band have wisely saved their famed Michael Jackson cover ‘Smooth Criminal’ for last – and what an elated, rapturous finale it is. Every grinning, exultant individual in the room will have left tonight’s venue quietly hoping that AAF return to our shores a little sooner than last time. There’s life in the old ant yet. AN AUDIENCE WITH PAUL GASCOIGNE
Despite taking everyone to church this time last year, Sheffield’s O2 Academy had been a musical pilgrimage site yet to be crossed off for Hozier, the high-flying emerald isles solo rocker. It seemed high time he made his appearance too, as the place positively brimmed with the anticipatory hubbub of a new face, who, despite not being too much unlike anyone who’s visited these parts before, has undoubtedly displayed a quick mastery in turning blues into hits. Conversing with the crowd almost as soon as he entered, Hozier’s stage presence instantly defined itself in its juxtaposition of his colloquial, pub-performer-like manner with the assured pop presence of a female backing duo. Indeed, the strength of admiration this man has captured in a short amount of time was apparent right from ‘Like Real People Do’, as an appreciative quiet swept the crowd, who nodded gently to the soulful opener. The gig was, of course, unlikely to stay mellow for long, and a few tracks in the towering Irishman was treating the room to stompers like ‘Jackie and Wilson’, bringing a packed venue into life. It was not, however, until just before the encore that his newly-found devotees were treated to signature single ‘Take Me To Church’, and with a cover of ‘Heroes’ in homage to the late David Bowie to follow, it all seemed a rather wholesome night of crowd-pleasing bluesy pop from a man who already seems to know – and value – his audience. FOUR YEARS SINCE THE RELEASE OF PEPPY, SUN-KISSED DEBUT LOVEBLOOD, ELEGANT LONDON SINGER KING CHARLES HAS RETURNED WITH FOLLOW-UP ALBUM GAMBLE FOR A ROSE. CURRENTLY TOURING THE NEW ALBUM AND ARRIVING AT THE LEADMILL LATER THIS MONTH, TOM PLANT GOT TO KNOW A BIT MORE ABOUT CHARLES COSTA. King Charles tells me that right from the birth of his career he’d always wanted to follow a ‘fabulous route’, and it only takes a mere glance at his eclectic style – falling somewhere between Adam Ant and Prince – to see that fabulousness runs deep through all aspects of the man. Over the four-year gap between his albums, Charles was touring and honing his music, admitting that with the debut album he was too preoccupied with making something different. “I went a little off-piste in terms of my sound.” And despite liking the final product, the break in recording has allowed for a return to what the artist describes as an “original and true sound – something truly exciting”. Similar to many musicians, the crafting of a distinctive look and a commitment to individuality was inspired largely by one great man: the late David Bowie. “It’s a huge loss. He was a massive influence on me. I loved the fact that he was so out of the box and never conformed,” he says. “I like to think there’s some of that in my own style and music. My neighbour in London actually was a long-term friend of Bowie and would work with him on his style. It’s a small world, eh?” It’s very strange to think that Bowie now qualifies as an answer for the dinner party with departed celebrities question, but suffice to say that the Thin White Duke will now be warmly welcomed at Costa’s table, alongside Elvis Presley. “Just imagine the hairdos at that table!” he cries. Gamble For a Rose was released in January and the inevitable UK tour stop-off at The Leadmill now beckons. He is no stranger to the popular venue, and somewhat surprisingly the born and bred West Londoner claims that he feels more than at home up north. “I always get a warm reception at The Leadmill, it’s a great venue, and I always look forward to the northern dates a little bit more. I do sometimes feel that people up north get me a bit more than anywhere else.” Very much in tune with the music scene up this neck of the woods too, Costa mentions a handful of up-and-coming acts, including Sheffield’s own Liberty Ship, who toured with the artist in 2013. “They were a great bunch and we had a good laugh together. I really loved the sound they had – keep an eye out for them!” Signing off the interview with a proclamation of excitement for what 2016 may hold, King Charles has clearly enjoyed rediscovering hit musical roots in Gamble For a Rose and is confident that this sense of contentment will shine through on the record. And the New Year’s resolution is a remarkably simple one: “I just want to enjoy myself, both with the new music and life in general.” GAMBLE FOR A ROSE IS OUT NOW AND KING CHARLES PLAYS THE LEADMILL ON FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12TH. HEAD TO WWW.LEADMILL. CO.UK FOR TICKETS AND MORE INFO.

COMPOSE YOURSELF Sheffield is becoming quite the place for music festivals, and on 19th to 21st February the latest one opens in the Crucible Studio, courtesy of Music in the Round. The weekend has the title of ‘Mendelssohn and Schumann: the Leipzig Years’, and celebrates the meeting of these two classical music giants. Ensemble 360 will be playing the highly-charged, often turbulent chamber music of Robert Schumann, in combination with the ever-youthful compositions of Felix Mendelssohn. Their historic meeting, on October 3rd 1835 was also when young pianist and composer Clara Wieck first met Schumann and marked the beginning of one of the most passionate love stories in classical music. As a backdrop to this story, figures such as the inspirational J.S. Bach and others will be the subject of musical talks and lectures from top university professors as they delve even deeper into this remarkable music and into the lives and the minds of the men who created it. The full festival is 3 evening concerts, 3 daytime concerts, a symposium and an illustrated lecture, and will cost you £70, but there are offers and discounts including a festival pass for students and under 18s at just £15, and for first timers, shows will only cost you and a friend £5 each. www.musicintheround.co.uk

SEND IN THE BOYS! Ten years since the release of Milburn’s debut album, Well Well Well, and almost eight years since their farewell gig, the popular local fourpiece have announced two return gigs at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May. Lead singer Joe Carnall Jnr, who recently embarked on a solo project, told Exposed: ‘The response so far has been incredible. We’re all looking forward to getting back on the stage together.’ Joining Joe in the original line-up is his brother Louis Carnall, drummer Joe Green and guitarist Tom Rowley. The group, who formed back in 2001, gathered a devoted fan base across the UK during their seven year stint as a band which saw them release two studio albums and four singles into the charts, as well as a number of EPs earlier in their career. Head to www.o2academysheffield.co.uk for ticket info and prices.
Charlie Sheen once said: ‘The best way to not get your heart broken is to pretend you don’t have one.’ Then again, he also said: ‘I’ve got magic. I’ve got poetry in my fingertips. Most of the time — and this includes naps — I’m an F-18, bro. And I will destroy you in the air. I will deploy my ordinance to the ground.’ The lesson here: don’t always believe Charlie Sheen.

A Tribute to a Starman The Golden Years have sadly come to an end. Music blogger Mark Perkins shares his thoughts on the passing of David Bowie. I first met David Bowie in my parents’ living room in 1972, then again a few weeks later in the school playground, and he’s been following me round ever since. I didn’t actually meet him of course, he was on the TV, but that now famous Top of the Pops performance of ‘Starman’, where he casually draped his spangly arm around Mick Ronson, is as vivid to me now as it was then. My playground encounter came when my best friend Malcolm took down the hood of his parka on a Monday morning to reveal his newly-acquired Bowie haircut, the like of which I’d never seen so close up. I was spell-bound by both these events, and the influence that Bowie had on me, and the world around me, never went away. My first girlfriend stared longingly at the sleeve of her Aladdin Sane LP. My friend Phil had a part-time job and could afford to buy his albums, which he let me tape. I played tennis-racket guitar to every track on Ziggy Stardust. I consider myself fortunate to have been a teenager in the seventies, growing up in what was Bowie’s most remarkably creative period, and one in which he changed the way we saw pop stars. And we did all see it. All of us. Top Of The Pops was the cultural touchstone that not only brought you and
your friends together the next day, but more than likely would be watched in the same room as your disapproving parents and maybe your even more horrified granny. Everything about him inspired the generation growing up alongside him. The impact of albums like Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust is difficult to appreciate now. At first glance he just ‘made music’, but he also turned out to be a fashion icon, artist, actor, designer, video pioneer and media innovator. And of course there’s the much talked about ‘constant re-invention’ of his music. For me, that was the main thing – his music. When he made a dance album with Nile Rogers, it didn’t sound like other dance albums; it was Bowie’s dance album. When he made a Philadelphia-soul album with
Luther Vandross it still sounded like a Bowie album, just different from any other Bowie album you’d ever heard. Whatever else I’ve listened to over the years, part of my musical world has always had a corner reserved for some of Bowie’s music, and in this streaming age, lost singles and worn-out cassette tapes have been replaced by renewed chances to listen to his songs, both old and new. I recently visited Berlin for the first time, where Bowie made the albums Low, Heroes and Lodger in the eighties, and I was able to lose myself (on my headphones) in the music from that era. Listening at the same time to the single ‘Where Are We Now?’, with its melancholic reflections on his time there, I felt somehow that his life and music all seemed to have come full circle. It’s not surprising that his death resonated around the world as it has. At one time it seemed he was going to fade into living the life of a Manhattan recluse, but then he wrong-footed us all in 2013 with his album The Next Day, and now Blackstar, released on his final birthday, which turned out to be almost the last day of his life. He remained unpredictable until the very end, and while there will always be more music, there will never be another David Bowie.

Martin Gregory Smith, producer/tea masher at Mu Studios gives us a months worth of insights, ramblings and musings about the current state of the Sheffield music scene. Any music industry pundits checking the zeitgeist for 2016 can be informed by what I’m seeing here at Mu Studios: artists, bands and acts all seem to be going in extra hard this year to achieve more with their music. This is all the more encouraging seeing as physical catalogue albums (golden oldies) are selling more than new releases for the first time since records (in both senses) began. The year kicked off with the release of the Steel City Rhythm’s album. Stylistically, they are a gumbo of reggae and dub peppered with some fiery rap, all of which is generously displayed on this record produced in collaboration with the full team here at Mu studios/Laundry Rooms including Thomas Lebioda and Dave Hadley. Get out to see them live soon. Talking of bands you absolutely must check out live, K.O.G. and the Zongo Brigade have been finalising their debut studio release, Turn Up The Music. These guys rolled into Mu Studios like an unstoppable juggernaut of vibe, complete with horns, percussion and rap. Keep eyes/ears peeled for this. Young indie upstarts Liberty Ship have been receiving the Mu treatment, preparing for their debut single. Great energy and enthusiasm coming from this act, which despite their relative tender years has resulted in a recording that had a prominent industry insider raving about their prospects.
Other artists wrapping up releases include Sheffield’s very own vocal maestro Steve Edwards, talented singer-songwriter Adrian Fountain and Derbyshire’s premier unsigned rock act Stand Amongst Giants. At the end of December, following a personal meltdown/empathy overload, I decided I had to do something/anything possible towards the plight of the Syrian migrants – hence launching the Mu Studios fundraiser. I posted a hastily conceived video on Facebook, only to watch it accrue over 3,000 views in a day. The idea was that anyone making a new booking at Mu Studios between Christmas and New Year could get a half price session, 100% of which would go to MOAS, Migrant Offshore Aid Station. I managed to pull in the engineering skills of my glamourous assistants, Matt Bulloch and James Grant. We had an amazing response and can report that we managed to send enough over to buy a sizable portion of a rescue boat or a few dozen lifesaving kits. Massive thanks to all involved, including The Bobby Pins, Natalia Hackett, Adrian Fountain, Humble Williams and Tony Otyehe. Finally, these holidays have been a shocking time due to the passing of some of our cultural gods – Bowie, Rickman, Lemmy, Frey – and it’s probably a good time to reflect on the humanity and individuality that these artists brought us. All of them shared one thing in common: they were uncompromisingly themselves. For any artists reading this, please know that the most important thing you can do is communicate what your life and experiences are. Good luck!

If you’re anything like me then hearing the word ‘history’ will remind you of your school days: falling asleep at the back of the class while a monotone tweed jacket wittered on about some long dead royals. But this month, to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 repeal of Section 28, we celebrate LGBT History Month with kings and queens of a different variety. LGBT History Month is an international event promoting equality and diversity – and this year Sheffield is leading the way with its most diverse array of events yet. Both universities are running events throughout the month (note: Sheffield University listings were not available at time of writing but will be online when you read this). I have to give extra kudos to Hallam LGBT+ group who have organised events for every single day of the month with a variety of activities from screenings, workshops, talks, guest speakers, an exhibition and more. Events at both universities are also open to non-students. Be sure to check out the trio of big screen offerings from Showroom, each with their own unique after-event. All About My Mother will be followed by a chilled afternoon of tapas and Spanish music. Indie pop disco Chick Habit follows the Addicted to Fresno screening, and for their finale, following the classic Priscilla Queen of the Desert (my all-time favourite film), don’t miss Start Your Engines!, an evening extravaganza of glitter, glamour, disco, sequins and shade. Another weekend of events will be hosted by the Friends of Edward Carpenter on 21st and 22nd
of February with two full days of films, talks, and poetry at Millennium Gallery. The Saturday evening culminates with a concert by acclaimed lesbian folk musician Grace Petrie, who, following her Glastonbury performance, was told by Billy Bragg, “You stole the f@!#ing show, sister!” Sunday will feature a screening of the film Pride followed by a discussion with the co-founders of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, upon whom the film was based. Rounding off the month, following the success of their debut show last year, The Funky Beaver Show return for two nights at the Library Theatre. Not only are these queens rapidly establishing themselves as one of the biggest drag groups in the UK with their style, talent and humour but they are also working to raise money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital charity and supporting our own young talent by working with student groups to build their skills in performance art and media management. What’s not to love? On the Friday evening we also see the return of Climax at Sheffield University, who have their own chapter in the Sheffield history books after two decades as the largest and longest running LGBT club night in the city. On top of all the one-off events don’t forget we also have our regulars! Dempseys and OMG open every day and the LGBT pop-up cafe every Tuesday. Find details of all these events and more on the LGBT History Month guide at www. lgbtsheffield.co.uk. Until next time, love and sequins,

Dumpling Design: A Recipe for Success Sheffield-based game developers Dumpling Design recently made a splash on the app market with Dashy Crashy, a wacky car racer which combines colourful, Sega-style visuals and frenetic gameplay as you dodge speeding vehicles in an attempt to beat your high score. Now rapidly approaching 2 million downloads, our games blogger Kieran Wade spoke to designer Travis Wade to find out more.
What made you want to make a game such as Dashy Crashy? Arcade games are our passion! We wanted to cram classic arcade feels into a compulsive mobile form – injecting old-school play with new-school tech. Personally, I enjoyed the challenge of seeing how much I could distil racing down to a pure, exciting essence that everyone could enjoy. How much success has the game had since its release? The decision to launch before Christmas paid off; Apple featured us worldwide as we had over 1M downloads after the first week, and we’re approaching 2M in its first month. A lot of these types of games tend to have a fair amount of upgrades, power-ups, etc – why doesn’t Dashy
Crashy? I think this comes back to classic arcade sensibilities. Back in those days it was less about persistent ‘levelling up’ and more about upping your skill and knowledge of the game – there were no requirements holding you back from being good. Do you ever hope to expand into console or PC game development? Both Brent (Technical Director at Dumpling) and I spent much of our careers working on console for SEGA, RARE and Sumo-Digital, and we’re
quite enjoying being in a new space and learning everything over again. That said, we’re console kids at heart, so with the right project we’d jump at the chance. Are there any plans for a Dashy Crashy 2? We plan to refine and refresh the game with the audience, while considering how best to move to other platforms – we’re inundated with requests for Android! So expect new cars and tweaks in the coming months, while we plan additional features such as multiplayer, new car parts and things that flip the gameplay on its head. Whether those changes roll into Dashy Crashy or it becomes Dashy Crashy 2 is still up in the air. We’re also busy tinkering on our second game, a ‘fighting game for everyone’ which we’d love to share with players this year.
BY KIERAN WADE
DASHY CRASHY Sporting fun and addictive gameplay, Dashy Crashy is the perfect pick-up-and-play game. It is ultimately an endless game, so your goal is to constantly beat your own score. You are a car that is trying to get as far as possible on the road – pretty simple, right? But this road happens to have five lanes filled with other vehicles that will happily end your current streak. Now, you are able to speed up in short busts, which will increase your score at a much quicker rate; however the chances of collision are in turn heightened. The opposite applies if you decide to slow down: you’ll be safer but don’t expect to rack up high scores anytime soon. As you get better at the game, you’ll notice speeding vehicles that will try and ram you off the road, meaning you’ll need to rely on quick reflexes. Other obstacles include lorries and
pile-ups – all of this adds a welcome challenge. There are six ranks to achieve (E - S) – and as you get further into the ranks, you’ll start unlocking new vehicles. Additional vehicles can range in acceleration, turning, and strength – this means you can eventually get one that is capable of crashing multiple times without being destroyed. Dashy Crashy can have some pretty intense moments, especially when you’re nearing an A or S rank – the vehicles will start getting very manic, switching lanes at a fast pace, and this is where your heart will really start racing. The game is available to download on the App store, completely free of charge – so check it out, you’ll be hooked.

Oscars 2016:
The Lowdown
Saul Holmes tells you all you need to know about this year’s 88th Academy Awards. Still Rockin’
Back in September, the Academy announced that US comedian Chris Rock will return as host for the ceremony, despite having previously received a varied reception from critics and Academy officials when hosting the 77th Oscars back in 2005. Rock is likely to liven things up with his sharp wit, but just like previous years the Academy has shown it is reluctant to take big risks when it comes to hosts. Even though it is one of the most prestigious events in the Hollywood calendar, Oscar ceremonies have received mixed reviews for the past several years. The last great ceremony came in 2009, when the producers put Hugh Jackman’s musical theatre experience to good use. More recently, after Seth Macfarlane’s infamous ‘We Saw Your Boobs’ song flopped, the Academy turned to safer option Ellen DeGeneres in 2014 and then Neil Patrick Harris last year, both of whom hosted lacklustre shows.
Frontrunners – The Revenant, Room, Mad Max: Fury Road Speculation regarding the frontrunners for the 88th Academy Awards began in earnest last month, when the nominees were announced and the Golden Globes ceremony gave some clues as to who the favourites might be. The Revenant leads with twelve nominations, including Best Picture, alongside The Martian, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Room,
The Big Short, Spotlight and Mad Max: Fury Road. Leonardo Di Caprio looks set to end one of the internet’s favourite memes, as he is the frontrunner for the Best Actor award for his lead role in The Revenant. His strongest competition comes from Eddie Redmayne, nominated for his role as groundbreaking transgender figure Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, after winning the award last year for his portrayal as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Brie Larson has emerged as favourite to win Best Actress after, like Di Caprio, she won in the same category at the Golden Globes in January. However, she also faces stiff competition from the likes of Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence. One of the most difficult categories to discern this year is Best Feature Documentary. Amy, Cartel Land, The
Look of Silence, What Happened, Miss Simone? and Winter on Fire are all nominated, and each film is deeply fascinating in its own right. Although Mad Max: Fury Road may be an outside bet for Best Picture, it looks a strong contender in many other categories. A film with such explosive vision is a favourite for categories such as Best Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Visual Effects.
Sly Guy!
The 2016 Oscars sees the first Academy Award nomination for Sylvester Stallone since he was nominated for both acting and writing for Rocky in 1977. This time, Stallone is nominated in the Supporting Actor category for Creed, in which he reprises his role as an aging Rocky Balboa, looking to help Apollo Creed’s son follow in his father’s footsteps. Though Stallone is more often seen in blockbuster action movies, and is more famous for his physical frame than his acting chops, his performance in Creed received a positive reception, and he won the Golden Globe in the same category back in January, in addition to a host of other lower profile awards.
The Snubs
Awards season wouldn’t feel complete without a controversy surrounding the Academy Award nominations. This year, one of the major snubs is Beasts of No Nation, touted for several awards upon its release including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Idris Elba. However, the film has received no nominations at the Oscars, and the obvious oversight has opened up a debate about diversity at the awards. All 20 nominees in the four acting categories are white, while all of the nominees for Best Director are men. The Academy needs to re-appraise its role in recognising talent and effort in the film industry, as infrequent efforts to recognise diverse groups will not placate those dissatisfied for much longer.

Rolling Out The Red Carpet
Creed There’s a very strong thread of nostalgia coming through in Blockbuster cinema recently. Not just a sequel or reboot, these films – exemplified by the likes of Spectre, Jurassic World and The Force Awakens – draw from the collective nostalgia surrounding the classics, taking the best bits while reinventing the popular formula for a new generation. Creed follows a similar vein, picking up the wider Rocky “Universe” with the introduction of Apollo Creed’s son (Jordan), now beginning his own underdog journey to become a boxing champ, mentored by the one and only Rocky Balboa (Stallone). After multiple Rocky sequels, with arguably diminishing quality, it’s a wise choice to take a left turn in the franchise, honouring Stallone’s legacy, while bringing in fresh blood (literally) to set it in a new direction. The same dramatic beats are present, but it’s the relationship between Balboa and his protégé that is the heart of this film, preventing the story from slipping too far into mimicry. The fights are brilliantly shot, the emotion is raw, the performances are uniformly strong (Stallone for an Oscar, please), and perhaps most impressively of all, we now have a fighter in Adonis Creed whose career we are keen to see develop. Rated: 4/5
The Revenant The production of the Revenant (meaning: ‘a person who has returned from the dead’) was notoriously torturous, filmed in gruelling conditions without much let up for cast or crew. This is reflected in the film. It is, fair to say, unrelentingly brutal, with both the human and natural elements conspiring against Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), a frontiersman left for dead after a horrifying bear attack, filmed in excruciating close up over a seemingly interminable length of time. In the midst of the downbeat narrative, Emmanuel Lubezki’s camera drinks in the impossibly beautiful locations, breath-taking and foreboding, taking on a life of their own. The film’s centrepiece, however, is DiCaprio, ferocious in his efforts, both as actor and as the film’s protagonist, with an impossible will to survive, overcoming the most unimaginable of obstacles (yes, he did actually sleep inside a dead horse). Not for the faint-hearted. Rated: 3/5
In the last 6 months, Cineworld Sheffield has undergone major surgery. Not only has it had a dramatic face-lift – with epic new advertising screens wrapping around the foyer, new seating, disco floor and smart concessions area – but the cinematic experience itself has been updated, with the brand new 4DX screen and IMAX refurbishment (including overceiling surround sound, even larger screen, leather seats, and lazer sharp image). It’s a well-deserved renovation for what is currently the UK’s busiest cinema, with around 30,000 customers coming through the doors on a weekly basis. The culmination of this refurb is the brand new VIP Experience. Customers begin their experience by entering into a private lounge and bar area, where they can enjoy a buffet meal specially prepared by the onsite chef. As the film is about to start, guests take their pick of unlimited cinema snacks – nachos, hotdogs, popcorn, drinks etc – something we took full advantage of (for review purposes, of course). Each of the two screens hold around 40 lazy boy reclining leather chairs, providing the most comfortable cinema experience around. The trick is to choose the right film – a full belly and feet up could make it very difficult to stay awake! At £29.00 per person, it may seem expensive for a film, but as a special date night with a full meal, unlimited snacks and premium movie experience, it’s actually pretty good value (and if you’re an Unlimited card holder, you get all this for a very canny £19.00). Finally, it has to be said that the staff work hard to make this a proper VIP experience, being incredibly helpful and attentive. As the end result of much hard work, the VIP Experience is the jewel in the crown of a Cineworld that is finally giving Sheffield’s very large filmloving community a cinema that stands as one of the best in the UK.

Director Stephen Daldry sends a poignant message of humanity with his production of An Inspector Calls. The Lyceum plays host to a full house tonight as J. B. Priestley’s play draws in everyone from school children to more mature theatre-goers. Daldry uses his space wisely from the get-go, as a small boy runs through the audience and takes to the stage. When the set is finally revealed, Daldry’s spectacular expressionist vision of 1912 makes clever use of extras; children provide a representation of the working class, delivering silent yet strong social context throughout the narrative. The added use of pyro and the setting of the mini mansion takes the ‘dining room drama’ to another level, and translates the setting to the stage for 2016. Hamish Riddle as Eric Birling delivers an entertaining performance which provides some much needed comic relief during the show, whilst Katherine Jack as daughter Sheila Birling holds the audience tightly throughout and portrays the character’s emotional journey straight on the surface. Both Geoff Leesley and Caroline Wildi as Mr and Mrs Birling provide convincing depictions of the pre-war, older generation and play J. B. Priestley’s characters perfectly, highlighting the stark generational differences, a key component of the play. Double bluff? Triple Bluff? Apparition or otherwise, the classic ending of J. B. Priestley’s work is iconic and delivered perfectly. Liam Brennan as Inspector Goole provides a powerful performance, bringing everything from laughs to gasps and even intense speeches of human kindness. The political element of An Inspector Calls remains still within its context, yet also fits with the zeitgeist of today. In a time of junior doctor strikes and austerity, this 71 year old critique of the upper classes and the importance of human connections has never been more relevant. Lewis Budden

Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 movie and Jonathan Buchan’s 1915 spy novel of the same title, the Olivier awardwinning production of 39 Steps celebrates its ten year anniversary since first appearing on the WestEnd with a UK-wide tour. Arriving at The Lyceum for a four night stay in February, Sam Forsdick spoke to Richard Ede, who portrays the show’s hero Richard Hannay, about working on the popular production. What’s especially intriguing about this version of 39 Steps is that you have four actors playing the roles of all 130 characters featured in the book. Understandably this must present a wide array of challenges? Yes, it’s very different from the book and takes more of an influence from the Alfred Hitchcock film. Overall, it’s an amazing challenge because it’s such a fast-paced show and everyone’s just running around like maniacs throughout. It’s almost an impossible task to tell such an epic story, with so many well-developed characters, and just having four actors – but we give it our best shot. It also has plenty of gags to enjoy. Is it difficult to take something which is fundamentally a drama and turn it into more of a comedy? To be honest, it’s quite easy for me as I’m the straight-faced guy. My character has to lead the story whilst chaos is all around him. A lot of the gags come from the contrast between the seriousness of the lead character and the ridiculousness of the others. And with only four actors tasked in covering so much material, things must be prone to going wrong on occasion? Oh yeah, things definitely go
wrong sometimes. Most of the time they are written into the script but there have been plenty of times where people have run back onstage with the wrong prop, for instance. There are lots of opportunities to trip up. Just last week one of the guys came back on stage after a swift costume change and his wig was on sideways. He looked like princess Leia. I suppose you’re lucky in the fact that you only have to play the main character. Are the other actors jealous? Yes, I think they are. It is a lot less confusing playing the one part, but as the main character it means I’m on stage for the entirety of the play. Overall, I get about one
minute off stage whilst the others get quite a few breathers so I think it balances out. You play the popular hero, Richard Hannay, who has a knack for escaping from tricky situations. What is he like to portray? It’s great; he’s a fantastic character who is stoic and heroic. The thing I enjoy most about playing Hannay is that I get to do all the action parts from chase scenes to jumping out of theatre boxes. The one bit I’ve not enjoyed is having to grow a pencil moustache for the part. It’s one of his defining features and because the part is so action-heavy, the stick-on version kept falling off. I’ve been getting plenty of funny looks
down the shops recently due to it. As you mentioned, there are some epic moments from the film like the chase on the Flying Scotsman. How do you feel performing those scenes? I love doing them. I went to see the play before I auditioned and thought they all looked brilliant and really enjoyed how fast-paced it all was. There was, however, one bit which I was a bit nervous about where my character has to climb down a rope from one of the theatre boxes before jumping onto the stage. I assumed I’d get some sort of stunt training but when it came to rehearsing that scene they just told me to go and do it – though I survived in the end!
