36: JAGWAR MA

After laying some strong foundations in 2016, everything’s set for these Aussie psych-rockers to take the year by storm. With a headline slot at Sheffield’s Outlines Festival already in the bag, frontman Jono Ma stars in our first cover feature of the year.

29: EXPOSED AWARDS 2017

Our annual awards ceremony/ monumental piss-up returns to shout about the best of Sheff once more. Head here for all you need to know thus far.

72: DAVID O’DOHERTY

The dishevelled Irish funnyman on his new show, favourite keyboards and complicated working relationship with Shakira.

76: JOSIE LONG

Trying her best to find the funny side of recent political events, Josie Long has her work cut out for her. She tells us why it’s important to face divisive issues head on.

84: CABBAGE

Bursting on the scene towards the end of 2016, Cabbage come with a shit-ton of stomping tracks and plenty to say.

94: HEADLINERS

Five bands who we reckon will be topping the bills when festival season comes around.

11: UPFRONT 22: VS 59: FASHION 65: FOOD 69: THINGS TO DO 72: COMEDY 79: NIGHTLIFE 83: MUSIC 99: LGBT 100: GAMING 103: FILM 105: CULTURE PLUS... DJ MOXIE, JODIE ABACUS, MUSIC REVIEWS + MORE!

Oreyt? Now let’s be honest: 2016 wasn’t the best. Dominated largely by unsavoury characters, divisive events and the passing of some true greats, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one glad to see the back of it. But, as they say, that was then and this is now. And while the ripple effects of last year will undoubtedly continue to make themselves felt in 2017, it’s time to push things forward and focus on what the next 12 months has to offer. A good place to start would be with this month’s cover stars, Jagwar Ma. Since releasing the brilliant Every Now and Then back in October, the Aussie psychedelics have deservedly gone from supporting Tame Impala and The XX to headliners in their own right. They top the bill at Sheffield’s Outlines Festival in March, where joining them will be rising UK R&B star Jodie Abacus, another huge talent who we’ve also collared for a natter in this ish. Aside from that, we’ve got the usual roundup of local news, previews and reviews, plus a guide to getting fit (or keeping the party going) in Sheffield with our Saint VS Sinners feature. The wonderful David O’Doherty and Josie Long feature in the comedy section, while hotly-tipped Manchester punks Cabbage swing by to talk about how they’re here to ruffle feathers over in music. You’ve got all the usual features – as well as some new additions – and a heads-up on all the albums, bands and events we’d recommend keeping an eye out for this year. Our annual Exposed Awards bash is also around the corner, so we’ve stuck all the main deets inside in case you need to plan your outfit/book the next day off work. Finally, just in case you haven’t noticed, we’ve had a bit of a makeover to kick off our first edition of the year in style. Hopefully you’ll approve as you flick through, and from all the team here at Exposed, we wish you a happy, healthy start to 2017. Let’s make it a good’un, eh?

SHEFFIELD SKI VILLAGE REDEVELOPMENT

INDEPENDENT VENUE WEEK 2017 For the fourth year in a row, Independent Venue Week returns from January 23-29. Venues across the UK will put on a series of shows to support various independent gig spots, featuring acts like BBC Sound of 2017 artists Cabbage, Simian Mobile Disco and The Moonlandingz. Sheffield’s own Richard

Hawley will be playing the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge on January 28 and 29 as part of the celebrations. Closer to home, Haggler’s Corner will host Echo Town on January 27. The Cornwall-born, Yorkshire-raised duo’s eclectic sound that includes stomp box, harmonica, didgeridoo and vocal harmonies has been championed by BBC Introducing recently. Other Sheffield venues supporting the week are The Leadmill and The Harley. Check the website below for updates on local shows.

See www.independentvenueweek.com for more information.

Sheffield Council have announced plans to take bids for a redevelopment of the Sheffield Ski Village site, as a mountain biking trail centre, urban bike park or national snow sports centre. They have stated that it could help bring thousands more visitors into the city, and is a “viable commercial opportunity.” The village has been unused since it was destroyed by a fire in 2012, and has been the victim of several arson attacks. The 30-acre site was one of the biggest artificial ski resorts in Europe and boasted four pistes, toboggan run and snowboarding park as well as a hotel, ski wear shop and restaurant.

NO MORE BOARDWALK The recent attempts to re-open the iconic Boardwalk venue have unfortunately come to a close, after “intense but ultimately futile negotiations” involving the legal groundwork. Proprietors of the re-launch, Kate Major and Chris Bamford, have released a statement and thanked the people of Sheffield for the “overwhelming support and enthusiasm” received. It’s a blow for fans of the historic venue, which saw stars such as Joe Cocker, and Arctic Monkeys grace the stage. The Clash’s live debut – supporting The Sex Pistols, no less – also happened at was then known as The Black Swan. Kate and Chris are now searching for an alternative location to make their dream of bringing quality beverages, music and street food to Sheffield.

CADS NEW SPACE

THE BOYS ARE COMING FOR YOU… Last month a teasing social media post from Milburn “regarding the future” of the band caused a ripple effect throughout their fan base, with some concerned that the cult indie rockers were calling it a day once more. However, to the delight of Well Well Wellians

throughout the UK, the foursome instead announced that following their successful stint of shows in 2016 (marking a decade since their debut) they have gone back into the studio and will be releasing their third album this summer. To celebrate the comeback, the band will be putting on a massive outdoor show at Don Valley Bowl on June 2, with support from Reverend and the Makers and up-and-coming five-piece Cabbage, plus further guests to be announced.

Tickets for the gig went on sale last month, and you can pre-order the album from www. milburnmusic.co.uk.

Since 2009, Creative Arts Development Space (CADS) has been transforming derelict buildings in Sheffield to provide studio space for musicians, artists and creative businesses, currently managing 11 buildings containing more than 160 studios. It has now taken over Eagle Works, a three-storey office block in Attercliffe, adding another 30 studios to their roster. The 15-year lease will offer more permanence and security to its studio holders. An open day at Eagle Works will be announced in the next couple of weeks and it is expected that studio spaces will be available for use by February 2017. For more information on CADS visit www.cadsonline.co.uk.

POPULAR TRACKS ON THE EXPOSED JUKEBOX LAST MONTH…

THE DEVONSHIRE CAT Since opening their doors in 2001, The Devonshire Cat has prided itself on serving real ale and craft beer from all over the world alongside hearty pub dishes. After closing for a revamp in November, the popular city centre venue returned last month boasting a dramatic makeover and brand new menu.

WHET YOUR WHISTLE

On top of 12 cask ales, 16 keg lines and a rotating bottle selection of over 200 drinks, there’s also an extensive menu of original cocktails – behind the scenes, the team have been hard at work crafting the perfect recipes to create rich, intense flavours. They’ve even created hop infusions and reduced beer syrups to really make the most out of their craft beer offerings.

HUNGRY?

The new menu makes the most out of what’s on offer locally, with all ingredients sourced within the region and most dishes crafted to complement their range of beers and wines. There are also plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options to cater for everyone. Naturally, they’ve included their fantastic beer in a few dishes too; try the chicken thighs roasted in Abbeydale Heathen Pale and finish with drunken sticky toffee pudding.

BOOK IT UP!

On top of hosting their own events like tap takeovers and food and drink pairings, The Dev Cat is fantastic place for private parties (stand up or sit down) whatever the occasion. Call 0114 279 6700 for more info.

“I got over my fear of turkeys ages ago!”

SWEAT! Over the last 12 months we’ve undertaken some hefty challenges in the name of this feature; giant bratwursts, piled-high burgers, beastly burritos and fiery hot wings have all been consumed by various members of Team Exposed. But in the spirit of starting anew (and not wanting to send anyone to an early grave), we thought it was high time we took on a somewhat healthier challenge.

Words:

Rachel Heward

22 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Helping us in our quest for selfimprovement is new addition to The Moor, Sweat! gym, who invite us over for a scary sounding ‘Matrix’ workout. In the Exposed corner is Anna Tebble, the most competitive gal in the office and someone who actually runs — for fun. Team Sweat! put forward Lance Walcott, duty manager and personal trainer totting up a mighty 13 years in the industry. An even match, then. The Matrix is a high intensity interval training (HIIT) class which improves speed, fitness and agility through short bursts of different activities. Advertised as an “extreme gym experience”, our three challenges today involve sprinting, rowing and shuttle runs. Round one takes us to the Skill Mills, a new kind of treadmill powered by the user’s own might and curved to protect joints. As it’s a bit different to your average piece of gym equipment, Anna is offered a practice go, on which she powers it so quickly that within mere seconds she’s close to flying straight off the back. As Anna descends into fits of giggles, I realise our chances of clinching the first win of the year are minimal. After calming down a little, Anna and Lance prepare for the first challenge. To even things out, Anna’s Skill Mill is set to a low resistance, while Lance’s is on full whack. The aim is to cover as much distance as possible in three minutes.

As they begin Lance looks like he’s wading through thick treacle, and has to use the handles and angle his body low to the machine to get any kind of movement out of it. Anna, on the other hand, is soaring. Any hilarity from before has been pushed aside as her steely determination sets in, resulting in a firm win for Exposed as she covers 0.4KM while Lance only struggles to a wee 0.07KM. Round two takes us to the rowing machines. Demonstrating the proper technique, Lance shows Anna how to make the most out of each movement with the speed coming from the drive. Confident from the early win, Anna insists she can bag this round with the resistance set to number seven, while Lance maxes his out on ten. The same rules apply: three minutes of rowing as fast as possible to see who can go the furthest distance. A minute barely goes by before Anna regrets her former cockiness and begs for the resistance to be turned down, whilst Lance effortlessly tots up the metres. Feeling

sympathetic (and wanting the win) I put Anna out of her misery and turn the resistance down a notch. But it’s too little too late, as Lance amasses a mighty 800 metres while Anna, now struggling for breath, manages a mere 645. Now neck and neck, the shuttle run round is our decider, as each of our contestants has to run between two cones as quickly as possible to gain the most number of runs in three minutes. To make things trickier, Lance suggests they each carry a Bulgarian training bag to weigh them down. The equivalent of strapping a sandbag around your shoulders, Lance shows his strength by carrying a 17kg one while Anna goes for the small 5kg option. The countdown begins and things are looking pretty even. Like watching two tennis matches at once, I lose count at 30-something and have to rely on the honesty of Lance and Anna to decide the win… The latter goes first, tentatively telling us she got to 46, after which Lance admits he got a close 45… EXPOSED TAKE THE WIN!

VERDICT:

Shout-out to Lance for being a total gent and making things difficult for himself – it wasn’t exactly a crushing win, but we’ll take it! If you’re interested in trying out Sweat! for yourself (memberships start from just £15.99), head to sweatsheffield.com. The scores so far: EXPOSED: 29 CHALLENGERS: 36 DRAWS: 3

ADVERTISMENT FEATURE

NEW DIRECTION FOR 2017? If you’ve been thinking about progressing your career, 2017 might be the time to make a change. Whether you are looking to move upwards, sideways or in a completely new direction, the new year is as good a time as any to take the plunge. With figures showing an increase of 2.3% in salaries during the year to September 2016, it would appear that any job uncertainty following the Brexit referendum might have been quashed… for now. So grab the bull by the horns and embrace the chance of a new start as we look at why 2017 is the perfect time to change jobs.

There are lots of reasons why you might be looking for a new job:

You’re returning to work following a career break – maternity leave, sickness, redundancy or travelling. Put your qualifications, voluntary work or life experiences to good use by applying your knowledge to a paid role. You’ve gone as far as you can get in your current position. Chances of advancement may be poor at your current place of work. You feel under-appreciated in your existing role. Any investment in training and development is simply not coming your way. You’ve had a clash of personalities with a colleague and feel the only way to remedy the situation is to move on and start afresh.

You just don’t enjoy your job any more. Weekends don’t last long enough and Monday mornings are painful. You’re looking for more flexibility that doesn’t exist in your current job. There are hundreds of other reasons why you might be looking for a new direction in 2017 so, now that we know you are keen to make a move, let’s get the ball rolling.

Be Prepared

Focus on developing your CV, this could involve anything from a quick re-fresh if it isn’t long since you were on the job market, to a complete re-write, if you’ve been in the same position for more than three years. Consider exactly which direction you want to be heading and tailor your CV accordingly. If you’ve been in manufacturing, for example and are looking to move into marketing, note that you understand that the research and development processes takes time, much like the design (and redesign) of publicity material. Patience is a virtue in both disciplines. Make your experience relevant to the role that you are seeking and keep it simple, factual and nicely presented in an easy-to-read format. If your profession lends itself to it, have a portfolio of work or certificated proof of qualification(s) ready to waft in the direction of any prospective employer if

0114 221 0550 info@benchmarkrecruit.co.uk The Workstation, 15 Paternoster Row, S1 2BX

they ask for it. Case studies of successful projects can also demonstrate your aptitude. You might also need a reference or two. This can be tricky if your colleagues don’t know that you are seeking alternative employment so, for now, concentrate on character references and have the name of someone that you have worked for in mind if you are asked for a work reference.

Making The Move

When you’ve gathered the relevant info, sign up with a recruitment agency. A good recruitment agency won’t just sit back and wait for the right job to roll in, we’ll actively campaign in your preferred sector to find the right location, salary band and people for you to work with. We can also provide tips on interview techniques, presentation, how to get yourself noticed, and myriad other snippets of advice which will make the transition to your new job a walk in the park. However you find it, your next job could be ready and waiting for you, all you need is a little encouragement in the right direction. If you want to take advantage of the buoyant job market, strike while the iron is hot and send your CV to Benchmark today. We’ll make sure that it’s seen by all the right people, setting you well on your way to a life changing 2017!

Words: Rachel Heward

“I wish you could see this! There’s an electrical storm out to sea and it’s lit up like an explosion. I don’t think an iPhone pic would do it justice… Imagine a black horizon with flickering forks of lightening and continuous strobes.” It sounds impressive, mainly from the expletive-laden way in which he abandons his answers to marvel at the phenomenon. “Sorry, it’s just this is insane!” It makes for an interesting, if not distracting, backdrop to the interview, in which Ma tells us about the creative process behind the band’s second album, his love of remixing and his obsession with Sheffield’s Warp Records. Similar to debut Howlin’, the band’s sophomore offering Every Now And Then spanned various locations during its creation. And impressively, the three studios in Sydney, rural France and London were all built by the band themselves. “I like making environments to make music in, and the studio-hopping had a logic to it; each different place served a different purpose. Sydney was more acoustic and good for writing and laying down the non-electric stuff, France was isolated so it was a good place for really knuckling down, whereas the studio in London was the place to refine everything.” It’s an album that has built upon the pop-meets-acid house vibe from their debut; shimmery synths, trip-hop beats and catchy hooks make for breezy listening, though there’s still plenty there to appease those more accustomed to the kind of music often found in darkened warehouses and subterranean spaces.

WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 37

Jono explains: “It was definitely influenced by here [Sydney] and has taken things from the environment it was conceived in. We live in London now and obviously it’s the polar opposite – the darkness and griminess compared to the slick, sunny, peachiness of Sydney.” Not one to dwell on something once it’s finished, Jono admits he doesn’t tend to pay much attention to the reaction to their outputs. Rather his sights are already focusing on the next thing. And perhaps their music will take on a new direction now they’ve swapped the sandy shores of Aus with the streets of north London? “I’d like to see things move into deeper and darker territory. I think the zeitgeist in general is reflecting that there’s a lot more to be angry and disconcerted about, especially with the year we’ve just had. All of our idols have died, the metaphoric political ship is steering more to the right and a lot of people are feeling disenfranchised. I think we’ll begin to see bolder musical moments, and I wouldn’t mind having the chance to be a part of that.” Already back in the studio, Jono is devoting time to his other passion: “I fucking love doing remixes. I’m working on a Temples one at the moment, and have just come back from the studio today actually. Sometimes I’ll just hear a song on the radio and want to get my hands on it, but more often than not people tend to come and find me.” Those that have found him include the likes of Warpaint, Night Beats and Foals, with the remix of the latter’s ‘Mountain At My Gates’ amassing a hefty 206K plays on SoundCloud. Always wanting to keep his finger on the pulse, Jono has also been making a name for himself as a DJ, playing post-gig parties, festival slots and events across the globe. “I think it’s a really healthy way to keep your appetite for music rich, and feel connected to people on the

38 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

underground scene. Our shows now are often on larger stages and at festivals, which is obviously great, but there’s something unique about clubs – the evolution of music is in real time in that environment. Creating remixes and DJing is a great way of testing things without too much commitment – it’s a low pressure environment and one you can gauge a reaction from almost immediately.” One person who has had an impact on this side of Jono’s career is none other than British techno and house pioneer Andrew Weatherall. On an industrial estate in Tottenham, Jagwar’s studio (nicknamed ‘Le Bunker’) occupies the same space as Weatherall’s. A man who’s produced everyone from Primal Scream through to New Order, it’s not hard to see a crossover when it comes to Jagwar’s stuff.

“I have always been a massive fan. Though he had very little impact on this record physically, I see his main influence on our stuff as yet to come. For me personally, the obvious thing he had an impact on outside of the band was my DJing. In that respect there’s no greater person to be rubbing shoulders with. We’ve worked on a lot of stuff together and he’s definitely taught me a few streamlined tricks – I had a tendency to produce overcomplicated things. He’s all about keeping it simple and trusting instincts.” This year sees the band embark upon a string of live dates that has them jetting off to everywhere from Singapore to Belgium, Amsterdam and the UK; with their headline slot at Outlines one of their first of the year in the northern hemisphere. “When we played Sheffield in May last year we had to whip straight off unfortunately. It was a shame as when I was growing up I was obsessed with Warp Records and have always been intrigued to see the place where all of that was spawned.” On a bill that boasts an impressive roster of upcoming talent – including that of Islet, The Orielles, Blood Sport, Luxury Death, Jodie Abacus and Azusena – Jagwar Ma are now part of the same league of headlining acts they were, not so long ago, opening for. With their own success partly due to support slots with the likes of Tame Impala and The xx, the nourishing of new talent is something the band are keen to do themselves. “We always have a say in support and like to get our friends involved. On the US tour we had Kirin J Callinan and in Australia we had The Meteoric Crew, a group of DJs who we’ve come to see as brothers of ours. There always has to be a personal connection, same as what we had with Tame Impala. We have a few options for the upcoming tour – keep your eyes peeled for something exciting.” Jagwar Ma headline The Leadmill at Outlines festival, from March 3-4. Head to www.outlinesfestival. com for tickets and more info.

EVERY NOW AND THEN – 3 ESSENTIAL TRACKS

‘Ordinary’ – this one is anything but. It’s a bit of a mash up – dreamy pop blends with electronica, soul and what Gabriel Winterfield describes as “rapping without really rapping.” ‘OB1’ – making reference to the synth Oberheim OB-1 and including drumming from Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, this track has Madchester written all over it. ‘Give Me A Reason’ – Seven minutes of pure grooves. And one for good luck… Not strictly a Jagwar Ma track, but this remix of Warpaint’s ‘New Song’ by Jono Ma is simply stunning. Listen here: tinyurl.com/zu54nmy.

TOP HEALTHY TIPS

Being healthy doesn’t mean sacrificing carbs forever. The secret is having everything in moderation and giving your body what it needs – and you won’t find the solution in some fad diet from the depths of the internet. Do the sensible thing and try these tried and tested tips instead.

PEAK TIMES

HOT STUFF

If you need guidance there’s plenty of help on offer and the sessions aren’t pricey at all. THE BENEFITS? Climbing is a great way to work your whole body at once; you’ll strengthen your core as well as toning muscle mass and trimming the fat. Stay at it and you’ll become a lean, mean climbing machine. More info: www.foundryclimbing.com

WHAT IS IT? Why not give hot yoga a go? Basically, it’s normal yoga but it’s done in a heated room, making you sweat off the pounds quicker. THE BENEFITS? The heat helps relax your muscles so you can get in all sorts of tricky positions easier. Naturally, you’ll also burn far more calories this way – not to mention the fact that a toasty yoga studio always looks welcoming in January. More info: www.hotyogasheffield.co.uk

INTO THE WILD WHAT IS IT? Parson House is an activities centre specifically designed for people of all ages to get involved, have fun and improve their health in a number of different ways. 1) Make a smoothie in the morning with a healthy helping of kale or spinach. Kale is the most nutritionally rich food in existence so it’s worth trying. The sweetness of the fruits will counter the greens and you won’t even taste them, but your body will.

GONNA MAKE YOU SWEAT WHAT IS IT? A friendly, state-of-the art gym dedicated to help you achieve your personal fitness goals. Sweat! can be found on The Moor and offers a variety of classes, the latest equipment and highly-trained to staff to help you get the most out of every visit. THE BENEFITS? Going to the gym even just 2-3 times a week has been shown to alleviate stress, keep you happy and improve sleep quality. More info: www. sweatsheffield.com

46 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

2) Go to sleep! Aim for at least 7-8 hours every night. Sleep is your body’s repair time so if you’re skipping out, it’s going to hurt your health. Get an app to measure your sleep quality (try Sleep Time), put your phone in ‘night mode’ and read something to calm your thoughts. 3) 30 mins to an hour a day is a good amount of light exercise to aim for, and can be achieved by something as simple as a brisk walk to work. 4) They’re called superfoods for a reason! Packed with tons of vitamins and nutrients that your body will love, make sure you integrate the likes of salmon, kale, broccoli, blueberries, quinoa, eggs and chia seeds into your diet. 5) Finally, stay hydrated. Water is your body’s best buddy so try to get at least 2 litres a day. That’s 3 big glasses – one for every meal.

Eat, drink and be merry: Take advantage of the excess of snacks on offer over the festive period and make sure you well-fed before you start drinking. By eating food, particularly absorbent carbohydrates, you soak up the booze and prevent a rumbling beer belly. Hydrate: Before you drink, after you drink, whilst you drink – aim to be drinking plenty of water to keep your body oxidised. Drink fruit juice: Or more specifically berry-based fruit juices with fructose (the simple sugar carbohydrate). It has been proven to be adept at breaking down alcohol in your blood cells and speeding up the hangover recovery process. Sleep the right amount of time: Give your body time to recover from the trauma of a big night out; make sure you can stay in bed long enough to sleep off any units that are in your body. Exercise: Yes, this sounds the WORST idea of all time; but going for a run will release endorphins naturally and lift your mood, making you less of a hungover grump!

HAVE YER CAKE… WHAT IS IT? More about sweet than savoury? Fear not, because La Crème will sort you right out. With over fifty different desserts to choose from including waffles, crepes, cakes and cookie dough, there’s something for every sweet tooth in Sheffield to indulge themselves in. TEMPTED YET? A wide selection of non-alcoholic cocktails and milkshakes are the perfect way to wash down the desserts. www.lacremedesserts.co.uk 54 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

In May 2015 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had three 2cm triple negative tumours, which meant I would have to undergo a mastectomy and reconstruction of my right breast, followed by a brutal regime of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Along the way I lost my partner, my home, my self-esteem and confidence. It took me a long while to recover mentally from the cancer treatment and the losses in my personal circumstances. Once back on my feet I wanted to somehow reclaim the reconstructed part of my body, which felt not quite part of me; the scar had healed well and I didn’t need to hide it, but I wanted a tattoo to prettify my boob again. A friend recommended Good Vibrations, and I spoke to Sophie and Pete. This was my first tattoo and it has special significance to me as the cherry blossom design is not only pretty, but symbolises the beauty and fleeting nature of life. Sophie was brilliant in the design she created for me. We liaised with Pete from the Crookes studio and my consultants at the hospital to make sure the tattoo was safe and appropriate. Pete was also superb. He came over to the Ecclesall Road studio to sit with me during the session, even staying open late so Sophie could create her design. I love the design – it feels very right for me and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her and the studio to anyone else. I’m grateful for the care and attention they took in what is an important part of how I feel about my body as a cancer survivor. Lucy Ashton 62 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

This month we’re celebrating the fifth year anniversary of Good Vibrations Tattoo opening their original store in Crookes. And what better way to raise a glass than by hearing first-hand from some of their happy clients?

I have been a regular at Good Vibrations for a number of years now. Each visit leaves me feeling positive and well cared for; the level of professionalism and quality of work is second to none. I have been tattooed by a number of their artists now and even though each has a unique personality and style of work, I can honestly say the customer experience is a consistent one. I really can not recommend them enough. Steven Hughes

My overall experience of Good Vibrations Tattoo has always been a pleasurable one (except for the pain of having a tattoo!) The staff are always friendly, polite and very accommodating regarding appointment times. The lady that tattooed me, Sophie Herrick, is lovely and always manages to come up with a design better then what I have asked for! Her attention to detail and shading is amazing. Zee Bibbings

I’ve been tattooed by Sophie, Jess and Josh at Good Vibrations with all of my fifteen tattoos done at the shop – mainly by Sophie. The care, hard work and dedication that the whole team put into their work is incredible. Sophie is my main artist and flawless in everything she does. She is like a chameleon: amazingly talented at a huge range of styles! Carrie Trimby

The Devonshire Cat 49 Wellington St, S1 4HG 0114 2796700 www.facebook.com/devcat

THE PLACE

Abbeydale Brewery’s flagship pub The Devonshire Cat recently reopened following a major – and arguably much-needed – facelift for the venue. The revamp also included a brand-new food menu, an even wider choice of beer (12 cask, 16 keg and 200+ bottles) and revised selection of cocktails. The interior is almost unrecognisable; the bar now situated in the middle of the floor, the décor much sharper (no longer akin to an airport Wetherspoons) and layout much more open-plan. The refurb appears to have gone down well: the bar was bustling with post-work drinkers and most of the tables were filled with diners – and on a Wednesday night, no less.

THE FOOD

Perfect for the chilly winter nights, the new menu focusses on traditional comfort dishes – think pies, stews, lamb chops, pork belly, burgers, fish and chips, etc. – often smothered in some sort of Abbeydale booze, and always sourced locally. The small plates menu offered a nice mixture of dishes, from bar snacks like honey and ginger wings served with homemade ketchup to more filling starters such as Scotch duck eggs or fresh mussels in a beer broth. The mussels, we were told, had been getting plenty of positive feedback from customers so we ordered a bowl to share. Bathed in a very tasty wheat beer broth, they were fresh, succulent and it didn’t take long until we were mopping up with sides of sourdough bread. For mains, we opted for the slow roast Moss Valley pork belly and the daily special of ox cheek with roasted shallots and mash. I’d heard great things about Moss Valley pork beforehand and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The meat was wonderfully tender and accompanied by a delicious slab of crackling, a slice of black pudding, creamy mash and a tangy apple sauce for good measure. The ox cheek was soaked in thick stout gravy with parsnip crisps, sweet roasted shallots and the mash beneath. Again, the meat was superb: a light touch from the fork and it melted into tender strands with a rich, deep flavour. Dessert came in the form of drunken sticky toffee pudding, named due to its use of Yorkshire Blackout porter as an ingredient. Served with Bradwell’s vanilla ice cream and espresso-infused toffee sauce, it was faultless and provided a perfect end to the evening.

VERDICT

With its improved surroundings, vast drinks selection and focus on high quality traditional dishes, the new-look Dev Cat is right up there as one of the best foodie pubs in the city centre.

Rum Revolution Not only has Cubana won Rum Menu of the Year at the coveted Rum Barrel Awards in London recently, it has also announced the launch of its brand new live music and cocktail lounge to celebrate the accolade. The venue’s vast menu includes over 167 types of rum, the pinnacle of which is the Maximo Extra Anejo, handpicked by Cubana’s owners all the way in Havana. No wonder it costs £150 a shot! With cigars, table service, salsa nights and tapas available, owner Adrian Bagnoli said: “We’re known for our vibrant Latino offering downstairs, but the live music lounge will give customers the opportunity to slink upstairs for a more mellow vibe and listen to some of Sheffield’s most talented artists performing every Friday and Saturday night.” The weekend night events will offer full table service and customers can pre-book places on info@cubanatapasbar.co.uk. Head to cubanatapasbar.co.uk for more information and to see the full rum menu.

Turning a corner Offering a unique and cosy atmosphere with space for live music and DJs, from January 4th Hagglers Corner are opening the doors of their new custom-built bar. The bar is the latest edition to their creative community which houses everything from a yoga centre to shops and arts and craft businesses. Drinks will range from cocktails to locally brewed

guest ales, plus favourites like Goose Island and Lowenbrau. Hand-selected spirits with a particular emphasis on rum and gin will also be on offer. Don’t forget to pop by and support them between 23rd-29th Jan as part of Independent Venue Week, where they will be hosting brother duo Echo Town as well as local support acts.

Jöro opens at KRYNKL

After a few construction setbacks, the Nordic-style chefs at Jöro have opened their doors in Shalesmoor’s new KRYNKL development. Executive chef Luke French opened the restaurant as a pop-up back in August, upstairs at The Milestone. With a focus on “hyper-seasonal”, locally-sourced ingredients, Jöro’s food is served as a “meal built of many small plates,” allowing you to have as little or as much as you want, deciding as you go along. With menus involving some incredible small and rare producers, this is one of the most unique dining experiences in Sheffield – make your reservations now! www.jororestaurant.co.uk

Street Food Warehouse

After visiting San Francisco’s amazing street food scene, Sheffielders Shona and Mark were inspired to create an intimate market with an emphasis on quality and variety, at the city centre’s Trafalgar Warehouse. With traders from all over the UK offering Greek, Polish and Oriental food, amongst many others, you can enjoy local beer and DJs whilst you travel the globe with your taste buds. After two pre-launch events in December, the brand will fully launch in spring and will be open from 5-9pm, a few Mondays a year (check their Facebook for specific dates). www.facebook.com/StreetFoodWarehouseSheffield WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 67

STRICTLY COME DANCING: LIVE TOUR

Free Wheelin’

We’re always looking for an excuse to get out of the office, so when the good folk at Cotic invited us to try out their range of bespoke mountain bikes, we were out of the door before anyone could remind us they didn’t come with stabilisers. Words : Phil Turner // Photos: Richard Baybutt It’s an chilly Friday morning and I’m trying to pluck up the courage to charge headlong down a hill on a bike I’ve never ridden before. Not only that, but I’m trying to keep up with Sam Capper, someone who demos these things for a living. Sam is part of the Cotic team, a specialist bike manufacturer based in Hope owned by Cy Turner. They specialise in high end bikes made primarily of steel, a substance more compliant than aluminium from which most bikes are made. Sam is a recent addition to the company, and his job involves travelling across the country, demoing bikes to prospective buyers. Nice work if you can get it. Now I’m not a ‘ballsy’ kind of person. And I’m also not much of a cyclist. So trying to stay close to Sam as he charges down the hill is a bit like asking Dawn French to keep up with Usain Bolt. Throw in a load of bumps and jumps and some of the rockiest terrain in Sheffield and you’ve got one anxious biker on your hands. But what is noticeable to even a rookie like me is how much of a difference having the right bike makes. As I cruise (and I mean that in the ‘going very slowly’ sense of the word) down the hill, I’m struck by just how safe it feels. Granted, I’ve not gone at the pace a serious biker will (just check out the video on the Exposed website for a feel of just how slow I went), but at no point do I sense the bike might let me down. “Lots of people are getting into all types of Find out more at www.cotic.co.uk. 68 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

biking now and the great thing about Sheffield is there is a real mix of abilities, so while there are loads of really amazing riders, there are also lots of beginners too,” Sam tells me. Sam recently moved to Sheffield and he says the scene here is like no other. “When there’s a cycling event, everyone gets together and supports each other,” he says. “And because you’ve got the right kind of countryside close by, it really is one of the best places in the country to learn to bike.” I tested out the Flare from the Cotic range at Parkwood Springs off Shirecliffe Road, the first ever crowd-funded trail in the UK, or there’s Lady Cannings at Ringinglow – both of which have plenty for beginners and the more advance rider. If you are interested in getting your hands on a Cotic bike, you can visit their workshop in Hope or Sam will come out to meet you on a mountain bike trail and let you try before you buy. Frames start at £400 and complete bikes start at around £1500.

BEST NEW BAR

Described (by himself, assumedly) as the ‘Aldi Buble’ or the ‘Ryanair Enya’, David O’Doherty is one of Ireland’s most cherished funnymen. Armed with his trusty 1986 Yamaha keyboard and a ton of hilarious world-wearied observations, the Dubliner brings his 17th live show Big Time to The Leadmill later this month. Andy White caught up with him beforehand to get a flavour of what we can expect. Amazingly, this is your 17th live tour. How would you say your comedy has developed since your first show, ‘The Story of the Boy Who Saved Comedy’? A lot. I know it looks like somebody just standing there, gabbing, but it takes so, so long to get any good at standup comedy. I listened back to a recording of that first show recently and I’d rather have drunk a pint of wasps, to be honest with you. Talk to us a bit about your latest show, ‘Big Time’. What should we be expecting? My shows always sound so lame when I try to describe them, but here goes! There will be some sitting down, there will be some standing up, and also some songs on an awful piano. Spoiler alert number one: I set out to fix everything that’s wrong in the world at the moment. Spoiler alert number two: I fail. You’ve won just about every prestigious comedy award going, but how does this compare to your 1990 East Leinster under-14 triple jump bronze medal? That was certainly the pinnacle of my sporting career, and it remains the only award I have hanging on my wall. Your trusty keyboard is never far from your side and, like a fine wine, 1986 appears to be your vintage. But what’s your favorite – Casio or Yamaha? I mean, I could go on for hours here. Of the mid-80s keyboards, Casios have the best beats, but Yamaha have the best sounds. The Yamaha PSS-170 plays Billy Joel’s ‘Don’t Go Changing’ as its demo tune! That’s an absolute beaut. Especially when it switches on in mid-flight and your suitcase arrives on the carousel, blaring it out for all to hear. That happened once.

ROY CHUBBY BROWN Sheffield City Hall // January 21 // £25 The man often branded “too rude for TV” Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown is back with even more rude, crude and downright offensive material that’ll be shocking to even the most seasoned of fans. The original Bad Boy of stand-up comedy will be coming to Sheffield City Hall on the 27th. What the critics say: “You cannot get away from the fact that he is a talent on stage, even if you don’t like the subjects that his character touches on.” – Pissed Off Geek www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

FUNHOUSE COMEDY CLUB

You’ve recently penned and released a children’s book, ‘Danger is Everywhere’. How did you find being an author for a bit instead of doing stand-up? Just doing stand-up all the time ruins your brain and causes you to disappear up the leg of your own trousers. All that examination of your own life, it’s bad for you. So it’s really nice to have something completely different that you can escape to. Writing children’s books is like a form of escapism for me. I’ve just finished a tour of reading the latest book in schools. Those sort of gigs are so much harder than these shows though. Tough crowds. Let’s finish with some quick-fire questions, starting with your desert island record. What album are you taking? There are a few albums that I always go back to. I like jazz a lot. But for now I’ll say Good News For People Who Love Bad News by Modest Mouse. And what book is going to the island with you? Pastoralia by George Saunders. Incredible short stories. Some of them are online. Search out ‘Sea Oak’ if you want to get a taste. The film that changed my life is… ? I saw Harold and Maude when I was probably slightly too young to get it fully, and it absolutely blew my mind. The best comedy gig I’ve ever been to is… ? I saw Mitch Hedberg at The Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival in 1998 and he was doing a different thing to everyone else I’d seen up to that point. The actor I’d like to play me in a film would be… ? Can it be a claymation? Of course. This is your gig. I’ll be a dachshund, voiced by Jim Broadbent. Obviously. I’d love to sing a duet with… ? I wrote a duet for Shakira and myself. But she never turns up at my gigs to sing it with me. So I do it all myself and do a horrific impersonation of her. So I think I’ll nominate Shakira here. David O’Doherty: Big Time arrives at The Leadmill on Jan 21st. Get tickets and more info from www. leadmill.co.uk

KELHAM ISLAND BREWERY TAP HOUSE

Josie Long is a comedian who just doesn’t know how to take things easy. Radio documentaries, podcasts, sitcoms, a feature film and even a reality TV show where she killed and ate a crocodile – she’s done them all. But even with all these weighty distractions keeping the London comic busy, her biggest love is still stand-up. And with her new live show, ‘Something Better’, coming to Sheffield next month, uber-fan Mark Perkins got in touch with Josie to hear what it was all about. Having seen you before in stand-up, I’m thinking that the recent political events could well feature quite a bit in your new show. I was talking to my dad, hoping for some re-assurance about the way things have changed this year. I asked him if he’d ever known a weirder time politically, hoping he would say yes, but he said ‘No, nothing like this’. After Brexit, it became apparent that I didn’t live in the place I thought I lived in. The show is about wanting something better from life and from politics and from the world, but it’s also about trying to cope with a relentless barrage of bad news, and feelings of political loss and disaffection. I was thinking about what it would be like playing Sheffield, and wondering how the audiences would react. It’s the only city that I really love, that voted for Brexit, even though it was by a very narrow margin. I’d like my shows to be a chance to confront these issues, but I know I’m more than likely ‘preaching to the choir’, in that my shows seem to attract people who were shocked that the Brexit argument won, just as I was. But you have also done the Alternate Realities Tour on a few occasions, where you play to an entirely different crowd. Yes, it’s a project where a friend and I get in a van, pull up somewhere, and just perform off the back of it. I’ve done three of these tours now, and they’ve been some of the best times of my life. I feel that comedy shows can give a lot of solace to people, but there’s a large group who we never reach, because they don’t ever come to my shows. It’s not often that anyone under 18 ever sees me. I want to find my crowd and somehow be useful. I’m always looking for that little bit of magic, which you don’t often get. We’re big documentary fans here in Sheffield, and I’ve loved listening to your Radio 4 documentary series ‘Short Cuts’. How did that develop? I was here for DocFest last year, so I’m a big fan too! And this is a project I really love. Being on the radio, these shows are really intimate. They’re essentially conversations which just tell stories, and the producer, Eleanor McDowell, is a true genius of sound creation. When I was brought in, I was keen to be a genuine part of the show – not just be there to introduce the clips. What I get to do is listen, plan and write scripts for each show, tie it together and add in my personal experiences. We’ve done eight series now and I’m really proud of them. There’s also a popular Radio 4 sitcom, ‘Romance and Adventure’, that you’ve written. Yes. I’d made two short films with characters played by my

friends. I developed this for the BBC and it became a radio sitcom with all the same characters. It’s gone down really well – so well in fact, that a few weeks ago we finished making a feature film based on the same characters, although we haven’t settled on a title yet. It’s partly about the complacency of myself and my friends, and how we take for granted that we live in such a secure, safe place. The UK media is so flippant and cruel about the refugee crisis. Our secure way of life isn’t really anything other than the luck of where we were born.

And of course lots of people will have seen you on The Island on Channel 4, where you had to survive on a desert island for two weeks with no food or water. We had to fend for ourselves totally, and you probably saw the part where we ended up catching and killing a crocodile for food. It actually turned me vegetarian doing that. Well, on week days anyway – I still eat meat at weekends! Even though it did taste amazing after almost starving for two weeks, I couldn’t cope with it. It felt so awful watching it die. Going on the show was a mad opportunity, and my friends asked what on earth I was doing! But I thought I’d never get another chance like it. Afterwards my mind felt so fresh and alert. After so much sunshine, I felt like my brain had been washed clean. Sleeping under the stars and not being able to go on my phone, doing stupid stuff – I really appreciate now how little you need to live. It made me less timid I suppose, and helped me to be bit more fearless in my personal life. Last time we spoke you’d just started the charity Arts Emergency, helping young people with getting started in the arts. How’s that going? Really well. There’s a genuine need to mentor young people to encourage them to choose arts-based subjects when they leave school, but it’s becoming more and more difficult. In three generations we’ve gone from free further education for everyone, to it costing upwards of £30,000. Our alternative to the ‘old boy network’ comprises hundreds of volunteers working in TV and film, music and art, design and theatre, and lots more. They provide information and contacts along the way, and it’s something that has proven very popular. It’s building and building and I’m pleased that I’m less involved on a day-to-day basis now, but only because they don’t need me. Josie Long: Something Better comes to Sheffield City Hall on Feb 16. HOPE WORKS PRESENTS VERONICA VASICKA

Carving A Niche Famous Sheffield nightclub Niche is reopening this January at a new location on the Wicker, after former owner Steve Baxendale bought the Arch9 venue out of liquidation. The original Niche nightclub – famed for being the birthplace of the garage shoot-off genre, ‘bassline’ – closed in 2005 after a huge police raid, but this time has the full backing of the police and council, albeit with a strict new door policy. Entry for men will be over 25s only, and over 21s for women. Baxendale also owns the Arundel Street nightclub, Tank, as well as one in Thailand where he lives. He said of the new Niche club: “We are re-launching one of Sheffield’s most famous nightclubs and we will be bringing back our well known DJs to create the great sounds that made Niche so popular.” The venue will have no MCs and the music policy will be strictly pre-2005 speed garage and bassline. www.nicheuk.com

From making waves on the radio to packing out underground clubs and festival stages alike, DJ Moxie has had one hell of a year, culminating in the startup of her own label On Loop. Leo Burrell went to find out more. You’re a very busy woman at the moment! Could you give those who might be new to you a bit of a breakdown on what you’re up to? It’s been a pretty full-on 12 months – but also really fun and challenging in some areas. It was definitely the year I put myself forward and out of my comfort zone. My club night, On Loop, has been touring all over, which has come such a way since the first session we did in March 2016. We’ve also developed that into the label and I’m working on Vol.3 of my compilation series ‘Moxie Presents’. Plus some big radio stuff coming out next year and then the DJing in between. A year of juggling different hats, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. We had a great time at your first On Loop night in Sheffield with Nice Like Rice back in November. What made you choose NLR as a collab partner and Sheffield for the first shindig? When I played for the NLR guys last time I had an instant connection with them. The set before mine and the closing set by the residents were straight up vibes. I’m quite picky about who I’m doing the parties with, especially if it’s a collaboration, so when they emailed to see if I wanted to work with them my answer was immediately yes. You brought Session Victim and Fold with you, the latter’s cracking EP Mill’s Theme is coming out under On Loop. Will you be doing more solo releases or will you carry on with the compilations? I’m so happy to be releasing the EP, it’s been a long time coming and something I’ve been supporting loads in my sets and on the radio. With both the label and club night it’s all about creating a family of DJs and having that community feel about it. Fold is someone that’s been a mate for years and I couldn’t be happier

to be releasing music by him – he’s incredibly talented and I really want more people to know about him. As for the compilation, Vol.3 is already in the making and I’m in the process on signing off the follow-up to the Fold EP by an artist called Avon Sai. The tunes on your label have had a lot of big-time support, from Benji B, Gilles Peterson, Annie Mac and Toddla T. Do you make a particular effort to play On Loop releases in your DJ sets? Absolutely! Often people send me unreleased music and if I feel an instant connection when I play it out then it’s a no brainer. It’s the same for the radio; I’ll often use that as a place to test stuff out and see the reaction from the listeners. Last year you played The Warehouse Project with Flume and Krystal Klear as part of your residency. Do you think On Loop could ever host a WHP? It’s always nice to be invited by WHP to come and play, and it was a real treat to spin as a resident this year. Each show was totally different to the next and I love that the crowd are up for it as soon as the doors open. Generally, the energy in Manchester is always on top form – it’s one of my favourite cities to play. At the moment we’re keeping On Loop at intimate venues as I think it’s important to build the crowd and I’m wary of it growing too quickly. But you never know, that room 2 has a special energy to it. Finally, has any new music been pushing your buttons recently? The new Fold release from my On Loop label is something I’ve been playing out loads recently. That one’s coming out January 23rd. The new Mr G album A Good Place...? is also really great. And the new Artwork release forthcoming on Numbers is an absolute beast – I’ve played that at every gig since I got it!

Dan Collins picks five upcoming albums to get all giddy about in 2017. ELBOW - LITTLE FICTIONS

Released: February 3, 2017 Elbow return to the fore having taken time out for all members to pursue solo projects. The unconventional rockers are on their yet to be named sixth album; and it’s their first without drummer Richard Jupp. It’s been a particularly harmonious record to make, with singer Guy Garvey remarking that “everything [ideas] in Elbow is bounced around. We co-produce everything; we could even coproduce a cup of tea!”

KANYE WEST - TURBOGRAFX 16.

Expected release: 2017 The most recognisable man in music today, the busy hustle of Kanye West never stops, and perhaps that’s why his follow up to the muchtweaked The Life of Pablo is yet to be released despite being touted by the man himself for a summer 2016 appearance. It’s hard to tell just what the album will sound like, but if his recent releases are anything to go by, expect a controlled fury of lyrics and big beats from Yeezy.

ALSO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR:

Brian Eno – Reflection (Jan 1st) Major Lazer – Music is the Weapon (Jan 6th) The Magnetic Fields (Mar 3rd) Charli XCX (May) The Shins – I Gleek on Your Grave (TBC) Arcade Fire (TBC) Gorillaz (TBC) Fleetwood Mac (TBC) LCD Soundsystem (TBC) Stormzy (TBC)

THE XX - I SEE YOU. AUSTRA - FUTURE POLITICS.

Released: January 20th Labelmates of local lads Arctic Monkeys, Toronto’s Austra are set to release their first full-length recording since 2014’s Olympia on Domino. Deep, reverberating dark-wave vibes have brought them critical success in the past, and with electronic producer Maya Popstepski still involved, expect more of the same from Katie Stelmanis’ project.

Released: January 13th If lead single ‘On Hold’ is anything to go by, perhaps the next offering by The XX will be more akin to songwriter Jamie XX’s solo work on the critically lauded In Colour. Expect compelling harmonies, swirling guitars and relentless rhythm from this tight knit trio, who travelled to the unusual location of Reykjavik in Iceland to record their third LP.

THE KILLERS (TITLE TBA)

Expected release: Early 2017 The Las Vegas band’s last studio offering was 2012’s Battle Born, with fans’ appetites sated by 2013’s Direct Hits – a greatest hits album – in-between. Frontman Brandon Flowers had previously hinted that fans of the band could expect a new release around late 2016, an early 2017 release is now considered to be more likely.

“YOU KNOW YOU’RE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT WHEN SOMEONE HATES YOU THAT MUCH. WE LIKE TO RUFFLE PEOPLE’S FEATHERS.”

Exploding onto the scene late last year with their politically motivated post-punk racket, Greater Manchester five-piece Cabbage are currently on top form. Punchy, entertaining and entirely unrepentant, their socially conscious lyrics tackling everything from Trump to the destructive impact of austerity have struck a chord with many. Not that they care much for what others think about them; in fact, they’d probably get more of a kick out of making you feel entirely uneasy – as Leo Burrell discovered while speaking to lyricist Joe Martin.

Hey Joe from Cabbage! How you doing? Yeah, I’m alright ta! We’re looking forward to your debut album, Young, Dumb, and Full of… Full of what exactly? Cabbage mainly! We thought it was quite a humorous title. It’s a collection of the 13 songs on the three EPs we released at the end of 2016. The whole thing was recorded with Simon “Ding” Archer, who has recorded PJ Harvey and the Fall, and he’s a legendary figure in these parts. A really sound guy too. The Fall were in the studio with him the week before us. And you’ve been smashing out the releases of late – three EPs in three months is a fair slog! We’re keen to put an album out each year, and we’re already working on new stuff. We’re going to be back in studio in January with James Skelly from The Coral. We put out all our EPs on his label, Skeleton Key Records. The reason we did the three EPs was to stagger it, so it’s not technically a debut album. Doing it that way makes it a much cheaper way for people to get into band. But yeah our first “proper” album will be out this year, for sure. The EPs seem like mini-manifestos, especially with their accompanying statements titled Exhibit A, B and C. They’re natural political talking points; it’s the kind of thing we chat about as mates so it makes sense for the music to reflect that. The first one is about war, and the death machine that war is. Soldiers are sent out to fight not really knowing what for – just a serving a moneymaking machine – and it’s depressing really. The second one was on the subject of the whole Jimmy Saville debacle, when he died no-one seemed to mention his links with Royal Family and his private room at Buckingham Palace. And if you think about it, stuff like that really needs mentioning! The third is about our anger over the UK’s decision to bomb Syria. But all of that said, we didn’t start out with a blue-print to be a political niche band. ‘Kevin’ was the first song we wrote.

84 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Speaking of, have you seen the YouTube comments on ‘Kevin’? Your label Play & Record Records absolutely destroys some guy giving you grief. Is that the Brian Brown guy? When we started out he was trolling every single video, so we tracked his IP address, found his Facebook, and he was just some bloke in his late 30s, posing with a guitar – just a sad, jealous guy really. You know you’re doing something right when someone hates you that much. We like to ruffle people’s feathers. There’s been an increased buzz around you in Sheffield since you were announced as support for Milburn’s gig at the Don Valley Bowl. How did that come about? We did three gigs supporting Milburn and they said as a rule they don’t tend to like new bands, so it was really nice of them to invite us. But we’ll get on that one when it comes around – it’s a long time away! Our headline shows are more important to us at the minute, those crowds are the ones who bought tickets to see us, so we need to honour those people. How was the tour with Blossoms? It was a lot of fun playing at big venues. I think it’s good to learn how to play on those kind of stages. Plus you get really good sound, and a lot more room to move around. You can get on each other’s shoulders, do star-jumps, anything! Yeah, really enjoyed it. We’re doing another tour with Blossoms in March, actually. You’ve often been put in the much over-used “surfrock” box and responsed that you are in fact “surfhell”. Nice touch. Do the lyrics and message come before the music for you? We like to think our lyrics stand up on their own in their poetic form. I used to do performance poetry on my own before we started as Cabbage. We want to work as quickly as possible and do an LP every year at least, to document where we are as a band and what’s going on in our minds. We’re not gonna compromise our work to get on Radio 1, put it that way! Cabbage play Picture House Social on February 3rd. Head to www.picture-housesocial.com for more info.

L DUTCH UNCLES J COLE BIG BALLOON 4 YOUR EYEZ ONLY

YOU ME AT SIX NIGHT PEOPLE You Me At Six’s three-year absence from music has invevitably created high expectations for their fifth studio album. Since releasing their debut album Take Off Your Colours back in 2008, the band have never quite achieved the same heights. Do they manage it with this offering? Not quite, but that doesn’t mean you should discount it entirely. Launching you straight into the mix with mega, in-yer-face grooves from the get-go, the album’s single of the same name blows away the cobwebs and reminds us what this band does best: fierce, thumping alt-rock tracks. From thereon in, an arrangement of tracks gently lead down a more introspective path; one that’s pretty far away from the ballsyness of the intro as a lot of the energy is shed. Track six ‘Sweat’, however, rips the album a new one: a punchy drum fill blasting through with a new found sense of oomph and kicking us back into that awesomely intense groove. It seems YMA6 were saving the best ‘til last on this album, with the creativity and power of the final few tracks overshadowing the slightly deflating mid-section. By no means perfect, Night People is frustratingly uneven in its delivery, but manages to make a worthwhile listen with the few corkers that it does offer. 6/10 Tom Green-Fuller

Dutch Uncles are fast becoming a phenomenon. Well, OK, it’s taken eight years – but who’s counting? Releasing an album every two years, and this is their fifth, they have become the most consistently listened to band in my (admittedly small) music world. If they’d been around in the 70s they’d have toured with Kate Bush. The 80s? Talking Heads. 90s? David Bowie. They’ve somehow downloaded all that art-pop influence from your Dad’s vinyl collection, infused it with bit of the Manchester alternative rock scene, and made what is quite possibly their best album yet. They know how to push the envelope just enough to keep their fans on board and still make new and interesting music. ‘Streetlight’ is currently the track that has me selecting repeat (that’s picking up the needle and moving it back, Dad). String section on point, swirling Steve Reich-style keyboards playing. It’s perfect. They’re playing the Leadmill in March. See you there. 8/10 Mark Perkins

It’s a dangerous phrase nowadays, a concept album. Detailing a young man’s struggle with life in the ghetto, 4 Your Eyez Only is bleakly honest, bold and forward. In ‘Neighbors’ J Cole recalls his own studio being raided, offering a sense of reality that has become Cole’s trademark. Continuing to buck the trend of the current hip hop scene, this release has no featured artists, meaning Cole sings many of his own hooks. ‘Foldin Clothes’ hears him laconically croon confidently for most of the song, and ‘She’s Mine Pt. 2’ sees double-tracking utilised to great effect as his voice echoes with emotion throughout. With soaring strings, piano keys and brass experimented with on tracks like ‘Ville Mentality’ and ‘She’s Mine Pt. 1’, he shows to put together a beat and track that is more than just your standard club banger; though that’s not to say that he can’t still please the mainstream, as shown with tracks like ‘Change’ – which boasts a brilliant Biggie-esque beat. 7/10 Daniel Collins

SHEAFS NOBODY’S WATCHING Since getting together towards the end of 2015, it took mere months for Sheffield five-piece Sheafs to turn the head of 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq. He gave the band their first taste of airtime by playing debut single ‘Punchline’ back in March, and it was no surprise either – the track was an entertaining throwback to the gritty, chaotic guitar rock which went down a storm on early/mid-noughties debut albums from the likes of The Libertines and The Courteeners. A number of months later they’ve released their own first offering, Nobody’s Watching, and the indie outfit have continued right where they left off with four more energetic, riff-heavy tracks all together clocking in at just under 15 minutes. Naturally, the early Arctic Monkeys and Milburn comparisons will be aired (and at times with good reason), but in title track ‘Nobody’s Watching’ and closer ‘Take Your Exit And Leave Through The Side Door’ it’s the dark basslines and pounding drums which suggests that the band lend more from the Dead Sons school of thought. It’s a sound that, with the touch of refinement and originality which tends to come from experience, should serve them very well indeed. 6/10 Joe Food 86 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Live Review RICHARD HAWLEY SHEFFIELD CITY HALL Much like a bottle of his beloved Henderson’s Relish, admiration for Richard Hawley runs thick throughout families from Sheffield, with those of all ages and tastes partial to a bit of the Pitsmoor crooner’s shtick. The sell-out City Hall crowd reflected this diversity well, and when the main man stepped onstage – dressed as standard in denim jacket and rolled up jeans, with rockabilly quiff on point – the reception proved that the best place to see Richard Hawley is undeniably in his hometown. After opening proceedings in dark, powerful fashion with Hollow Meadows favourite ‘Which Way’, he quickly whisked the audience back to the nostalgic romanticism of 2007’s Lady’s Bridge with ‘The Streets Are Ours’. Throughout the show, the seasoned performer showed this talent for juxtaposing melt-in-yourseat love ballads such as ‘I Still Want You’ and ‘Open Up Your Door’ alongside thumping rock numbers like ‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’ and ‘Down In The Woods’. The trademark Hawley banter was there as he joshed with Brexiteers, (“Ever get the feeling you’ve been conned?”) the home support (“Without you lot, we couldn’t afford booze or cocaine!”) and his drummer having the nerve to come from Birmingham (“I suppose somebody fucking has to!”). On a more sincere note, devoting songs ‘Don’t Stare At The Sun’ and ‘What Love Means’ in turn to his son and daughter gave the show a distinct homely feel; with the additional 2,000 or so locals in attendance feeling very much part of extended family as the singer reiterated his honour of sharing the evening with them. The obligatory encore opening with the classic ‘Coles Corner’ and closing on a hypnotic rendition of ‘The Ocean’ left the audience in no doubt that tonight, Richard, the honour was very much ours. REDFACES

TRAVIS O2 ACADEMY

While – admit it – it may be some time since you last thought about them, Travis have been steadily pottering away for the best part of two decades now, with a Christmas week O2 gig coming in support of latest LP Everything at Once. Rather than showing their age, however, tonight ended up providing something of an advertisement for the Glaswegians’ experience, with well-oiled (meaning efficient – not pissed) frontman Fran Healy performing several numbers from the shoulders of fans in the crowd, including a rather intimate acoustic version of ‘Flowers In The Window’ towards the end. A decidedly retrospective feel to the night also saw him regale the crowd with humorous tales of writing songs under the unintentional influence of calor heater gas, as well as pausing for some rumination on current politics, but the unavoidable highlight that tied up the night was, of course, the immortal ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me?’. No answer may be needed when the singalong is just that good. Words: Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas Pic: Kevin Wells

PRIMAL SCREAM PLUG

An atmosphere of disbelief buzzed through Plug on Saturday night as Bobby Gillespie prepared to wow Sheffield in one of its biggest venues, which suddenly seemed miniscule, being packed to the rafters with fans of the Scream. The overwhelming presence of Gillespie towered over the crowd, glitzy blazer silhouetted against an impressive array of strip lights, as the band tore through raucous opener ‘Accelerator’ from their 2000 album XTRMNTR. Tracks from their latest record Chaosmosis impressed; the catchy tunes of upbeat ‘Where the Light Gets In’ and the gospel-like hallelujahs of ‘Golden Rope’ fitting in nicely around old favourite ‘Jailbird’. Gillespie swaggered as funky synth number ‘(Feeling Like A) Demon Again’ showed a band at the peak of their powers, playing accessible anthems that win over both punk and dance audiences worldwide. The magic of 1991 album Screamadelica comes first through the subtle ‘Higher than the Sun’, made all the more effective by following shoe-gaze number ‘Shoot Speed/ Kill Light’ and solitary ballad ‘I’m Gonna Cry Myself Blind’. This is the Scream at their most versatile: all the songs somehow fitting together, a rock band at a rave with Gillespie like a Messianic priest at its helm. The gig closed out in spectacular fashion, the techno of ‘Swastika Eyes’ firing up the crowd, before five hits worthy of a Glastonbury headline slot tore the roof clean off. Gillespie’s energy seems to be higher than ever, and his determination all the more focused. Primal Scream may not sell quite as many records anymore – but boy, are they a good live band. And by the looks of it, they always will be. Words: Leo Burrell Pic: Duncan Stafford

A QUICKIE WITH…

OTIS MENSAH

2016 was a big one for you – sharing a stage with The Mouse Outfit, making the 1Xtra playlist and releasing your debut EP. What was the biggest highlight? It’s been such an amazing year, and I honestly feel blessed to have been able to share my perspective and artistry with such openminded people who are able to relate to my music. Both playing The Mouse Outfit gig and being featured on BBC 1Xtra have been incredible opportunities that I’m so thankful for. I’d say the biggest highlight of 2016 for me was having the opportunity to perform overseas and share my music with people in Berlin. It was my first show outside of the UK and I absolutely loved it with such a welcoming, open-minded vibe and crowd. Any New Year’s resolutions to tell us about? I’d just like to work on maintaining my health, try to stay inspired and remain as consistent with my artistry as possible. You’re known as something of a wordsmith. What lyric are you most proud of? From the first track off my debut mixtape Day Dream: ‘Clouds black like Priscilla, but Penelope cruising around the internet, intercepting your intellect.’ Simply because I love it when lyricists play with and twist certain words or names to manipulate the meaning of something. What can we expect from you in 2017? I hope to be releasing some new music as singles on a consistent basis, beginning with some new music visuals early in the year and also performing as much as possible. I’m really excited to release a new single called ‘Creep ‘n’ Crawl’ which I’ve been working on with an amazing Berlin-based producer called, The Intern. I truly appreciate everyone who has been supporting and taking this journey with me and I just want to continue to grow with those people. facebook.com/itsOtisMensah // otismensah.bandcamp.com // @ otismensah WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 93

Savages

Leo Burrell names five acts looking good for the headline slots when festival season rolls around.

Savages’ record Adore Life is as polarised as the year from which it came. 2016 has been a year of opposites – right vs left, old vs new, love vs hate – and the band reflect this in a concise and accessible manner. With architecture to match Pink Floyd, and the energy of My Bloody Valentine, the disco/punk/shoegaze/ metal carries lead singer Jehnny Beth’s message of peace and love like a freight train flying through a warzone. They offer a poignancy rarely found in such raucous music; lead single ‘Adore’ hears Beth repeatedly croon “I adore life” before serving up an apocalyptic ending which hangs in the air much like a bad voting result. I have no doubt Savages will be at the forefront of the 2017 revolution.

The XX

Let’s Eat Grandma

Playful yet political lyrics bouncing off wacky arrangements made 17-year-olds Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth one of the surprises of 2016. Their haunting, Brothers Grimm-inspired debut I, Gemini was one of the most innovative offerings of the year, and you’d be very surprised if this wasn’t recognised with some prestigious festival slots.

94 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

With their third album On Hold out this month, The XX are sure to be a name back on everyone’s lips in 2017. Closer, the band’s second record, did well to ride the wave of their eponymous debut, but this new LP appears to be taking a step in a different direction; away from their gloomy, introverted sound towards dancier, more upbeat territory. Universal acclaim for Jamie XX’s latest album In Colour has no doubt given him more freedom to experiment with sampling, and the album’s lead single ‘On Hold’ sees Hall and Oates injecting a vigorous amount of funk to proceedings. No doubt this rise in energy will see the band – one of the most influential electronic pop outfits from the last ten years – sitting high on festival line-ups around the world.

Jagwar Ma

Aussie psychedelics Jagwar Ma are currently enjoying the glories of delivering their second album with all the class of a band far beyond their years. Every Now and Then took the swirly magic of their debut album and added a healthy dose of acid house and funk, firmly cementing their reputation as one of the most cutting edge acts on the scene. After supporting Tame Impala on their vast European arena tour, comparisons with the other Aussie psychedelic band are no longer an elephant in the room; The Ma are bagging headline gigs in their own right and will top the bill at Tramlines offshoot Outlines Festival in March. Everything is now set for these boys to hit the big time in 2017.

Blossoms

Indie band of the moment Blossoms have said they want to be “as mainstream as Will Smith, as great as The Smiths and as uplifting as Mr Smith Goes to Washington.” Their multi-faceted influences come fully packaged on their debut as straight-for-thejugular, radio-friendly hits. But there is something in Tom Ogden’s vocal delivery that manages to avoid the irritability of indie-pop – he croons without coming across as self-indulgent, the fallback of many a leadsinger in recent years. After winning over crowds at Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury and supporting the Stone Roses at the first of their huge Etihad shows, the band are keen to get the second album out as soon as possible. Expect it to be in full bloom by spring. WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 95

Born and raised in Lewisham, South East London, Jodie Abacus spent his youth consuming a wholesome diet of soul, jazz, hip-hop and funk whilst honing skills as a singer/songwriter. A period of heartbreak and illness inspired one of his breakthrough tracks ‘I’ll Be That Friend’, and the artist has since become one of the leading R&B stars in the UK. With more music and a slot at Outlines Festival promised for 2017, Tom Green-Fuller went to find out a bit more about the fast-rising star. Your latest single ‘Keep Your Head Down’ empathises with those involved in the refugee crisis. Do you often feel a need to address big topics with your music? I just write whatever it is that’s on my mind, to be honest. I think my biggest strength is my writing, and I love the fact that you can write about anything. I can be writing about love, sex, food – it doesn’t really matter. The most important thing is to make it honest. I’ve always thought of myself as a deep thinker and music is how I get my thoughts across. Music can change people’s minds and it can even heal people; we all want to know how we can save the world, but none of us know how, so we do what we can. I love exploring that, man. So are you constantly on the lookout for songwriting inspiration? Yeah, I guess so. It’d usually be an experience from my life, and it’d have to be something organic; something I could see or something I could feel. Sometimes I’d just sit down and write a title – or even just a subject matter – and let it evolve from there. How’s 2017 shaping up for you? If I’m honest, I’m just hoping to actually make it to 2017! After this shit year, all we’ll be doing is congratulating

each other for making it through! Seriously though, I just want to grow my skills as an artist and a writer. I love what I’m doing and want to be able to keep doing what I love, but go as big as I can with it. The thing with music is you’re only as good as your last song, and I don’t think I’ve written my best song… yet. I see it kind of like a dinner party; if you look at my career like an episode of ‘Come Dine With Me’, I want the narrator to be saying: “Jodie’s certainly got his shit together right now!” There has to be a certain level of quality to the music I release: they’ve got to be great… like Frosties. And here in Sheff you’ve got Outlines Festival on the way. Yeah, I’ve had a really busy year with festivals in 2016: I’ve done Glastonbury, Parklife, YNot, so I like to think I’m pretty well prepared for Outlines. But yeah, really looking forward to that one! So have you started making any preparations or is it a bit early yet? As soon as you said that I started thinking about trying out some new songs. It’s all dependent on the time we get though, really – I don’t really know the arrangements yet. Whenever I’m back performing with the boys, it’s just so chilled and enjoyable travelling around doing the job you love. There’s a good chance a few new tunes will sneak into the set though.

Jodie Abacus is on the line-up for Outlines Festival, taking place in Sheffield March 3-4. Head to www.outlinesfestival.com for more info and tickets.

So: another year has passed, and it’s time for our annual hangoverinduced resolutions for the year ahead. This year – in addition to the four stone I’m obviously going to lose, true love I’m going to find, my pending lottery win and quitting smoking (again) – we have a wealth of events to look forward to. If you have resolved to improve your health and meet new people, then why not check out Trans Active’s first event of the year? They’ll be going swimming at Heeley Baths on 7th January. Now in their second year, Trans Active have organised a range of sport and fitness activities including swimming, badminton, walking, canoeing and climbing. Keep an eye on their Facebook page – facebook.com/ TransActive – for meetup details. 2017 will also be seeing a lot more of Pride Sheffield. Having returned last year, under a new committee, to a free annual event they have resolved to keep it that way. To fund the festival they will be running a range of fundraisers throughout the year; pop by and see their stall every Saturday at the Moor Deli Theatre or join in their weekly quiz

night every Tuesday at Dempseys. Back by popular demand following their previous events they will also be hosting a clairvoyance night at Dempseys on Monday 30th January. Someone else you may know from hosting the cabaret tent at Pride, or his regular nights across the city, Jason Richford and his band The Bowie Contingent, make a return on Saturday 7th January with Bowiefest at Maida Vale. Last year Bowiefest took place the day after Bowie’s 69th Birthday and the day before his passing. Now in its 14th year featuring an extended set by The

Bowie Contingent and supported by a selection of special guest performers, Bowiefest will give us an opportunity to celebrate his music, his influence and his legacy. If following a Christmas and New Year of excess you want your socials less alcohol-fuelled, then head to Hallam’s coffee social to catch up after the holidays in a chilled atmosphere. Or if you’re looking for a new project to get involved with, head to Hagglers Corner on Sunday 15th January for tea and cake with the Diversity Fest team and get involved in planning the 2017

festival. Continuing the queer cafe takeover, Andro and Eve return to Cafe #9 on 27th January with a special screening of feature documentary, Gender Troubles: The Butches. In a 3-for-1 special they will also be showing short films The Test Shot – recently shown at Sheffield’s Transforming Cinema festival – and local film maker Taylor Le Fin’s Switching Teams. Anyway, that’s your lot for this month! I’m off to dust off last night’s glitter and get myself a coffee and a nicotine patch. Until next time, love and Alka Seltzer!

5 GAMES TO GET EXCITED ABOUT IN 2017 This year is shaping up to be a great one for gaming. And whilst there are plenty of release dates still to be confirmed, let’s have faith and hope developers stick to their word. Here are my personal must-buy games of 2017, and in no particular order… By Kieran Wade

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard (24/01)

Final Fantasy VII Remake (TBC - 2017)

After the shambles that was Resident Evil 6, I applaud Capcom for making the decision to go back to first-person survival horror. This is what the series needs: a complete makeover – to bring actual horror back into the equation instead of this OTT action nonsense. After playing the demo numerous times, it’s safe to say Resident Evil VII is going to be a truly terrifying experience. Lovely.

Finally, Final Fantasy VII Remake is actually happening and scheduled for release at some point this year. I just hope people realise this isn’t simply Final Fantasy VII with better graphics, but a complete remake from head to toe, and the thought of that excites me no end. I love the original, and I hope I’ll love the remake, too.

SOME OTHER BIG 2017 RELEASES: Dead Island 2, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Sniper Elite 4, Halo Wars 2, Tekken 7

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (TBC - 2017) Dragon Quest Heroes II (28/04)

Crackdown 3 (TBC - 2017)

Yes. Yes. YES! The first three Crash Bandicoot games are some of the best gaming experiences of all time, and the fact they’re all getting remastered makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I imagine the master plan here is to see how successful this little collection is, and then a brand new Crash game will be made based on its popularity.

Crackdown 3 promises to have largely destructible environments, in which you can blow to pieces pretty much everything in an openworld sandbox environment. Much like previous games, expect to go absolutely ape-s**t on your enemies, and possibly your friends. Crackdown on the likes of PS4 and Xbox One should, in theory, be something rather special. I can’t wait.

Dragon Quest Heroes was a good game; however there were some aspects that could’ve been a lot better. I feel Heroes II will do just that by giving us a more expansive world, larger-scale battles, and generally improve on everything from the first instalment. Mmm, slimes...

Edited by Ali Bianchi

2016 has not been a great year for cinema, in particular for those of a more blockbuster persuasion – such as myself. However, while 2017 once again is filled with sequels and expanded universes, there is hope that some of them will rise above the average:

ROGUE ONE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: VOL 2

Arguably one of the best Marvel films to date, rejoining Draxx, Rocket Racoon and Baby Groot on their trippy adventures in deepest space should be a blast!

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Ok, so Batman vs Superman sucked, but I still believe in heroes. Initial footage suggests this superhero team-up will be less miserable, which I desperately want to be true.

A new Star Wars film may not appear to be the most risky proposition, but with the release of Rogue One, and the potential now for a film every year, Disney are really hoping that the $4 billion investment in the franchise will pay off ! Rogue One is set immediately before the events of ‘A New Hope’ following the band of rebels’ efforts to steal the plans for the Death Star in order to destroy it. While the result is something of a foregone conclusion, credit goes to Director Gareth Edwards and team for pulling together an entirely new group of heroes who fit snuggly into the world that George Lucas created. Rogue One certainly isn’t top tier Star Wars, with saggy plotting, wordy introductions, and distracting CG effects. But, with big battles in space, weird alien worlds and inhabitants, and the Force still very much at work, it is still a rollicking good ride. Rogue One is a story worth telling, in a world worth revisiting. Rated: 4/5

T2 TRAINSPOTTING

20 years on from the original (who feels old?!), Renton returns to his hometown, reunited with Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie. The original is a stonecold British classic. Here’s hoping the sequel can match up.

THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS

Yes, ok this one has The Rock in too, which is obviously a major draw. However, it also has a submarine/car chase. I don’t want to jump the gun, but this could be the greatest film ever.

MOANA GHOST IN THE SHELL

Based on a classic anime story about Major (Scarlett Johansson) a human-cyborg hybrid who leads an elite task force known as Section 9, taking on the worst of the criminal underworld. Looks a little bit mental.

Disney’s 21st century renaissance continues apace with the story of Moana. She’s a Polynesian princess seeking out the demi-God Maui who has stolen the heart of the goddess Te Fiti, causing all living things to begin to perish. There are all the hallmarks of Disney formula – the catchy tunes, goofy sidekicks and traditional storytelling – but there’s feistiness to the film that sets it apart from the pack. This is embodied by the two leads – Maui as a kind of antihero with a God Complex (played with typical charisma by Dwayne Johnson), and Moana herself (Auli’I Cravalho) as a smart and strong princess, totally separate from the whitewashed, lovestruck offerings of old. Funny, loveable and exciting, this is one of the strongest animations of the year. Rated: 4/5 WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 103

TOP PICKS

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST The Montgomery Theatre // January 2527 //From £12 If you’re still desperately clinging to the ever-dwindling vestiges of Christmas cheer, why not shake the January blues with this brilliant production of Beauty and The Beast? A great family show by an amateur (but no less entertaining) cast will be a perfect send-off to the holidays. www.themontgomery.org.uk

WILLY RUSSELL’S BLOOD BROTHERS Crucible Rehearsal Room // January 23Feb 4 // From £24.50 The legendary Blood Brothers tale tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

STICK ‘EM UP! Extended ‘til the 21st Jan due to popular demand, The Crucible’s Annie Get Your Gun promises “classic songs, a world class cast and real laughs,” at least according to its choreographer, Alistair David, known for his previous acclaimed Crucible production, Show Boat. Daniel Collins caught up with the cast ahead of their huge run of dates. If there’s any pressure to live up to the magnitude of Show Boat, it doesn’t show, as lead Anna Jane Casey jokes: “I look around the room at the ensemble dancers like ‘I could be your mum.’ I’m having to keep up with twenty year olds, so come and see the show ‘cause you might see me collapse at the end – that could be amusing!” “I’m challenged in the dance department myself, but it is great working with Alistair – though I’m not sure he’d say the same about me!” adds adoptive Aussie actor Ben Lewis, who plays Frank Butler, a wild-west cowboy who rivals ‘novelty act’ Annie Oakley. So beyond seeing a decorated theatre actress collapse with exhaustion at the end of a production, why should Sheffield come out to The Crucible to see the show? “Irving Berlin’s work on the score is amazing,” says Ben. Anna adds: “And even if you don’t like musical theatre, you’ll know songs like ‘Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better’ and ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’: anything from the ‘Great American Songbook’ is remarkable.” “They are some of the greatest songs –

musical theatre or otherwise – possibly ever!” claims Alistair. So, an award-winning choreographer and classic songs seem to be the order of the day for this production. But how do the cast go about the challenge of bringing a show about 19th century Wild West America into the present day? “It’s a man’s world and we aren’t shying away from that. It’s sexist and misogynistic: Frank is a meat and potatoes kinda man, he likes the attention, he loves guns, he loves women. But Annie is a strong, feminist character – a real independent woman – and so I think that’s what is enjoyable for us to play with. We don’t wanna dumb it down and make it PC,” Ben tells us. “It’s totally a feminist character and very current, especially with what’s happened in the US presidential election and Donald Trump!” agrees Anna. “If we can bring the whole world to an equal level it will be better for everyone and I feel this show is about that.”

SWAN LAKE The Lyceum Theatre // January 10-14 // From £26 One of Russia’s most loved ballets, Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, a much-loved classic exploring love and tragedy is brought to the stage at The Lyceum by a hugely energetic and passionate young cast and dazzling stage aesthetics. www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

SISTER ACT The Lyceum Theatre // January 16-21 // From £33 Starring X Factor winner Alexandra Burke as Deloris Van Cartier, Sister Act is the story of a musical diva whose life turns upside down when she becomes the sole eye-witness to a murder. Directed by Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood, this fabulous retelling is one of the most outrageous Broadway musicals around. www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

AN EVENING WITH FRANK BRUNO MBE The Leadmill // January 27 // £28.50 A legend of the boxing world and an outspoken activist for mental health awareness, it’s fair to say Frank Bruno MBE has some stories to share. The Leadmill on the 27th will see Frank opening up on a number of events from the rich tapestry of his life, and an extra £20 will get you a glass of bubbly and a meet-and-greet with the legend himself. leadmill.co.uk
