WELCOME TO THE FRINGE AT TRAMLINES The formation of Tramlines Festival back in 2009 was an example of Sheffield at its best: passionate local people coming together to push the agenda and do something positive for the community. What started off as a way for venues to combat the student exodus each summer quickly became a Steel City institution, growing each year into what it is today – a festival of national significance.

Naturally, over time the festival has been through some big changes. 2018 saw the main event move to the roomier surroundings of Hillsborough Park, while over in the centre Sheffield City Council, Sheffield BID and Tramlines Festival worked together in curating The Fringe at Tramlines. That partnership has continued this year and over at Exposed Magazine, a longstanding partner of Tramlines and ardent supporter of the local music scene, our job has been to bring together all of the diverse events and performances into one easily navigable publication (that would be this thing in your hands, dear reader).

So, here we are again – back for the 13th year running and ready to party in a variety of venues across our city centre. Musical innovation, creativity and the love of a good knees-up run

through the veins of the Steel City, which means pretty much every pub and bar will be getting involved in the fun. From 10-piece ska bands and 60-piece alt-pop choirs on the famous Devonshire Green stage to sweaty punk rock shows in local institutions like The Washy and Shakespeares, there’ll be something for everyone to get stuck into – and that’s before we even mention the late-night DJ sets taking the party into the wee hours at places like Hope Works, The Foundry and Plot 22. Have a flick through these pages and start getting your weekend planned out!

The Fringe Festival l Best of the Fest

PEACE GARDENS PARTY // SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

Following a big success last year, The Peace Gardens will again feature DJs across a multitude of music genres that are guaranteed to get people dancing. Hosted by Sile Sibanda of Radio Sheffield (who will also DJ), Saturday highlights include a DJ set from Dorian Cox of The Long Blondes and an open deck event hosted by local music shop and venue, Record Junkee. Also featured are Herbal T & Mikki Revel from Bradford FM playing a smooth mix of reggae, dub and soul; and Jesus Hairdo, former DJ from the famous ‘Brighton Beach’ club night. Also on Saturday are electro-pop peddlers nON sTOP eROTIC cABERET and Manchester DJ/Producer Xariella Music.

From gigs in breweries to latenight shenanigans, here are a few handpicked highlights of the weekend...

DANCING ON DEV GREEN // SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

The spiritual home of the annual festivities, Devonshire Green will again feature a large stage and an enviable range of food and drink vendors.

Curated by local legend Papa Al, the lineup aims to include a diverse range of music to suit all tastes and you’ll hear from the likes of ska/reggae legends Jungle Lion, the outlandish Captain Avery, Romano Jilo (a local Romani dance group), Neighbourhood Voices (60 strong self-identifying choir singing alt-pop and indie covers), Blue Street Brass and post-punk electronic sounds from Speed for Lovers.

And that’s just a small taste of what’s to come!

MAKE IT A LATE’UN // ALL WEEKEND

Once the main stages have finished, there are plenty of eclectic DJ sets to enjoy at a variety of late-night venues across the city centre. On Friday, Yellow Arch Studios will be hosting a special instalment of their ever-popular For The Record, playing everything from soul and funk to ska and rock & roll right through to 4am.

Elsewhere renowned Steel City rave shrine Hope Works will be hosting TEKKERS, their much-loved bassline/ garage/DnB bash, from 11pm-5am and featuring some of the Steel City’s finest selectors. On Saturday and Sunday, we’d also recommend checking out lively jungle sets at Church – Temple of Fun, vibey deep house parties in the Bloo 88 courtyard, upbeat disco dancing at Bungalows & Bears, and bangin’ pop classics at The Foundry. BREWERY BOOGIES // ALL WEEKEND

Combining two things that Sheffield does rather well – music and beer – popular Kelham Island brewery and taproom Heist Brew Co. will be hosting ‘Beerlines’ over the weekend, which includes sets from Sheff hip-hop artist Otis Mensah (Friday, 18:30), a tap takeover, live punk-jazz sets from Dat Brass (Saturday), and day-long b2b sets from the University of Sheffield’s DJ society (Sunday). In a rush? Don't want to hang around? Got other places to be? Then stop by for takeaway beers and burgers or grab a rum cocktail from their Rum Shack for your travels.

JAZZ IN THE SQUARE

Leopold Square is back as an official Fringe at Tramlines stage, bringing some of the best jazz, swing, folk and blues acts from the local music scene to the festival.

The live music kicks off at 5pm on Friday with Montuno, one of Sheffield’s longest running groove bands, and runs all weekend with Phil Johnson taking the reins from 1pm on Saturday, followed by Julian Jones, Sheffield’s ‘King of Swing’ John Naylor and his band Dizzy Club before the live music is brought to a close by Papa Soul and their unique take on classic songs from timeless labels such as Stax, Chess, Motown and Atlantic. Sunday sees Leopold Square favourite Nicola Farnon & The Made Ups get things going at 1pm, followed by jazz/soul/ funkateer Ryan Taylor, Lindsay Dracass and then seven-piece Bossa Nova/Samba band Carioca Soul.

THERE GOES THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Ahead of their upcoming Fringe at Tramlines show on 23rd July, Exposed caught up with Sheffield-based upper voices choir Neighbourhood Voices to talk inclusivity, live shows with Self Esteem and their big comeback gig.

Neighbourhood Voices is definitely not what you instinctively think of when you conjure up your own memories of a choir (belting out ‘He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands’, this is not!). Founded back in 2017 by Gina Walters, who you may recognise from her other musical incarnation, the superb Before Breakfast, the choir has gained huge popularity in Sheffield for their uplifting performances of contemporary classics, while simultaneously upending expectations of what a choir can look and sound like.

Such has been the success of the group, that around two and half years ago Gina enlisted the help of Liv Muir Wilson as assistant musical director, and between them, they craft interesting arrangements of songs that you probably won’t hear from other choirs around the city.

“I would say that in Sheffield, we are unique in what we do,” says Liv, who prior to joining NV gained plenty of experience working in choirs while studying music at the University of York. “Our rep[ertoire] choice is different to a lot of other groups.”

“I’ve sung in rock choirs and pop choirs before and covered a lot of choral standards which are often taken from musical theatre or the current mainstream pop charts which is what you hear on the radio. This is great but they don’t do what we do. What I think Neighbourhood Voices does is tap into music that you hear a lot of, great popular music, but you might not hear choirs perform.

The inclusive founding principle of Neighbourhood Voices has always been important to its members and through the choir, people from many diverse walks of life have been given the platform to sing and interact together socially. Given these commendable achievements, it would be easy for them to rest on their laurels; however, they are keenly aware that while their intention is to engender an inclusive space, they aren’t perfect and more efforts can be made to include people of colour and other marginalised communities.

Liv explains: “Recently, we’ve had a lot of discussions

NEIGHBOURHOOD voices around our inclusion language. We obviously don’t want to pointedly ask people in the choir how they identify, but we try to make it extremely clear that we are an upper voices choir and people can make of that what they want. If they feel they fit into that, they are welcome along. It’s something that we’ve had real conversations about, because we want it to be a safe space for women, but we don’t just want it to be a safe space for women.”

“We really, really want to make sure that people from any background feel welcome, included and safe to sing. Something that I love about it is that it’s a non-auditioned choir. There are people here who have done music degrees, who’ve been lifelong music learners and can read sheet music and play several instruments, and then there are people who’ve literally never sung in a choir before in their lives. We teach it all by ear.

“We have a number of LGBTQ+ and Queer choir members, of which I’m one, and we’re actively welcoming to non-binary people, trans people, and anyone who feels like they don’t currently have a place in choir. We’re doing a lot of work elsewhere to be allies to other groups, and that’s something that’s ongoing and we’re taking on training to support that.

“For example, we’ve booked in racial equality training because we recognise that we are a very white, and not exclusively but predominantly middle-class choir.

It isn’t lost on us. We want to do the work to make sure that we’re welcoming to all demographics, and everyone feels that they can join. Obviously, you need to see yourself represented in something to begin with, so we want to make sure that work is being done to ensure that.

“Something that we’re really working on musically at the moment is to make sure that we’re representing a diverse range of artists in our rep choices. I think everyone, especially on the committee, understands that it’s an ongoing conversation and everyone’s very willing to keep having those conversations. We just want to make it the most open and inclusive space that it possibly can be, and we know that we’ve got work to do to help it get there.”

Thanks in part to this inclusive attitude, Neighbourhood Voices bring a unique vibe to all their shows and have played some incredible sets through the years, including memorable Tramlines slots and a magical night at the Leadmill in January 2020, where they performed with another Sheffield fave, Self Esteem.

“The gig with Self Esteem was definitely a highlight for me while I’ve been in the choir.” says Liv. “It was amazing. She [Rebecca Lucy Taylor] also performed at our Christmas gig in 2019 at Picture House Social, which was incredible as well.”

Liv originally commuted from York for choir, before moving to Sheffield in March 2020, which frustratingly coincided with the first national lockdown, meaning that choir and singing in groups were a definite no-no.

Now that things are creeping back towards normality, at least in terms of restrictions on singing, there is extra enthusiasm for the upcoming shows.

“We’re just dead excited to be doing a big gig again..

We’ve got new rep and it’s a new time now as well. We have had to work up our confidence as a group and I think this is really going to be the event where we’re like, we are back!”

Based in Croydon, DXVL is at the very forefront of UK underground rap. Through also producing his own songs the artist has been able to tailor his own cloud rap genre.

tommy hunt This year's Fringe at Tramlines sees a visit from living legend, Northern Soul superstar and ex member of 50s doo-wop group The Flamingos, Tommy Hunt. Now 89 years young with a career spanning 70 years, over 50 record releases under his belt and friendships with the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, Tommy will be making a special meet and greet appearance at the Frog & Parrot's Black Door Soul Club's all-dayer.

Stephen Stevlor, author of the bestselling biography 'Dave Godin A Northern Soul', investigates the life and eclectic career of this remarkable and much loved man of soul.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1933, Tommy Hunt knew from an early age he'd been put on the planet to entertain. Son of a chorus line dancer and singer, his mother had toured the United States extensively and numbered several of the biggest stars of the 1940s

and '50s amongst her closest friends. It wasn't unusual for a young Tommy Hunt to find the likes of Jazz superstar Billy Ecksteine sitting at the kitchen table: "I would put on little shows for mom and her friends, they'd applaud and I'd take my bows. I always knew I'd been born to be in showbusiness!"

In 1953 Tommy recorded his first single with his group The Five Echoes, the bluesy number 'Lonely Mood', for Chicago's seminal Sabre record label with backing from The Fat's Coles Band, a combo lead by the brother of Tommy's current favourite vocalist, Nat King Cole. The 45 achieved local radio hit status leading to Tommy being offered a stand-in post in one of Chicago's most popular and successful vocal groups of the day, The Flamingos.

"One of the band had been drafted into the army and they had a big tour booked. The first date was in Toronto, Canada, a rock 'n' roll show sharing the bill with Gene Vincent, Bill Haley and a young southerner called Elvis Presley."

The future King of rock 'n' roll was currently basking in the glory of his first nationwide hit, 'Heartbreak Hotel', and on meeting Elvis, Tommy found the up-coming rock star surprisingly gracious and respectful. During the week-long residency Elvis surprised Tommy even further when one evening as Tommy and the Flamingos exited the stage, Elvis, who'd been watching the group's performance from the wings, confessed to Tommy how he'd tried to un-successfully copy his dance moves.

"Man! You were too fast!", complained a smiling Elvis.

tommy hunt "I love the way you move your body, I was trying to copy what you were doing but you're too fast! You sure are one helluva dancer!" A compliment Tommy still happily dines out on to this day.

In 1960 The Flamingos scored their biggest hit with the single 'I Only Have Eyes For You', a million seller and a song still very familiar to contemporary music fans as it soundtracks television adverts for products as diverse as Coca Cola, McDonalds and verbal search engine ALEXA! "I never made much money out of that record," says Tommy "I got about two thousand dollars and it literally sold millions worldwide. But that's what happened in those days, we all got ripped off big time!"

It was an all too familiar story throughout Tommy's career. His debut solo single, 'Human', hit the number one spot on the U.S R&B charts but once again this success failed to fill his pockets.

"I remember the record label giving me $200 'cos I needed to buy a new stage suit and a pair of shoes.

When I went back a few months later asking for more they told me all the money was gone, spent on phone calls, stamps and envelopes! Somebody must have bought an awful lot of stationary!"

Working alongside legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach, Tommy was supplied with possibly one of the most famous hits of the '60s, a song written specifically for him, the lamenting classic 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself'. The first person to ever record this composition, Tommy's successful U.S release was surpassed a few months later when blue-eyed soul songstress Dusty Springfield released her version of the song and scored a UK hit. "I liked Dusty's version," admits Tommy. "I always did consider 'I Just Don't Know...' to be a song more suited to woman's voice."

However, as a rhythm and blues chart topper in his own right Tommy was feted as the toast of New York's famous Apollo Theatre, performing at the venue over one hundred times alongside the likes of James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson and many others.

"James Brown? I didn't get on with James Brown. He would fire his musicians on stage if they made the slightest mistake, played one note wrong! One night he stopped the show and fired the entire band!

Wilson Pickett! He once refused to leave his dressing room if I headlined the Apollo on the same night he was playing! Jackie Wilson? Now, he was my mate!"

In the early 70s Tommy moved to the UK to join a host of American recording groups and artistes suddenly being championed by the British Northern Soul scene, including being asked to perform at a Northern Soul

all-nighter at Wigan Casino.

“When I arrived I expected a proper gambling casino, not a giant dancehall with sleeping bodies all over the floor! When I asked why I was stepping over 'corpses' to get to the dressing room? I was told, "They dance for a bit, then they sleep for a bit, then they get up and dance some more!"

Tommy had never heard of the sub-culture of Northern Soul before, but when he walked out onto the Casino stage in the early hours of that Sunday morning he was confronted by a massive sea of smiling, sweat-soaked faces, and greeted by the deafening cheers from over 2000 soul fans.

"I stepped onto the stage to applause like all hell had broken loose. I couldn't believe it, two thousand kids dancing and grooving to '60s American soul! I sang and danced like I was back at the Apollo in Harlem, it was a night I will never forget, it was the greatest feeling of my life!”

On Sunday 24th July as part of the Tramlines fringe festival and accompanied by 8 DJs playing 100% vinyl, 'King' Tommy will be making a special meet and greet appearance at THE BLACK DOOR SOUL CLUB'S Northern Soul all-dayer at The Frog & Parrot, Division Street, Sheffield.

Tommy will be signing autographs and chatting to fans expected from all corners of Great Britain. So, if you'd like to say hello, shake hands, share a drink or just have a word with one of the most colourful characters you'll ever meet with just as many colourful stories to tell and a true bona fide living legend of soul, Tommy Hunt, 'The King Of Northern Soul' will be in the building between 5 & 6pm. SPEED FOR LOVERS Speed For Lovers are no strangers to the Fringe at Tramlines, having brought their highly danceable “disco-not-disco” electronica to a variety of stages for past instalments. This year, you'll find them on Devonshire Green Stage where they’ll get the crowd into weekend boogie mode, as lead singer Kitty told Adele Parr earlier this month.

How long have you been performing as band now?

The three of us have been together since 2010 – Moony on bass and vocals, Liam on drums and myself on vocals and a synthesiser known as a Korg Kaossilator. We all knew each other through playing music, and prior to forming this band we all played on each other’s musical endeavours.

How would you describe the band’s sound? It’s certainly an interesting one to try and categorise.

That’s a tricky question, but someone once described us as ‘a dark pulsing new wave with elements of disco punk’ – and I think that pretty much summed us up. The band’s sound has really moved on from our first album Hot Yoga Emoji and we’re heading for a new sound, one which is more dancefloor-orientated and about getting the crowd involved.

And this isn’t your first Fringe at Tramlines rodeo, isn’t it?

We’ve played a few stages over the years including

SOMEONE ONCE DESCRIBED US AS‘'DARK PULSING NEW WAVE WITH ELEMENTS OF DISCO PUNK'’... I THINK THAT PRETTY MUCH SUMMED US UP...

Shakespeares and Dorothy Pax at Canal Lines, which was absolutely brilliant. We also opened the main stage at Tramlines in 2019 on the Sunday, after winning a competition for local bands called ‘Promotion of the Arts’.

On the Saturday night, we’re also playing an evening gig at The Harley – and we haven’t played there in a few years, so I’m really looking forward to it.

What tunes should we be looking out for?

We’ve got some festival bangers which are perfect for people to sing along with. One of them is called ‘Get Up, Get Out’ and really gets the crowd dancing. Then we always like to end our sets with ‘Righteous Blisters’, as it’s got a great singalong chorus. We’ve got a few new ones lined up, so we can see how the crowd react to them; this keeps it new and fresh for us, so it doesn’t get boring or repetitive.

As an artist, how do you think Covid has affected the live music industry?

I would say it’s changed for better and worst in some ways. A big thing for a lot of people nowadays is the cost of living – and art, music and culture tend to be the first thing to go when cutting down the budget. The pandemic cut us really short: after a few weeks of performing various events like Y Not festival and some shows in Manchester, it all stopped. We had a lot of momentum and it all got cut off completely. But now we’re moving forward again.

Any more albums in the pipeline?

We are probably heading towards more live recordings, as they seem to be the best fit for us. It's likely to include remixes that some of us in the band have done, as well as other people’s take on these. We’re very much a live band, so we want to capture that properly.

TEAH LEWIS James Leaney caught up with local singer-songwriter Teah Lewis, who’ll be bringing her engaging brand of folk-infused pop to the Fringe Stage on Devonshire Green.

Could you tell us a bit about your music and what sounds have influenced it?

I moved to Sheffield in 2013 and started doing open mics pretty much straight away. I hadn't really performed at all before that. So, as soon as I moved, I slowly started to write more music. I’d say it’s kind of folk-infused pop; a lot of artists like Gabriella Aplin do it well, and Before Breakfast we've got in Sheffield, who are brilliant at it as well.

How did you find last year’s Tramlines?

Honestly, massive. I’d never played a venue fit for a few hundred people, let alone 6000! So, yeah, it was just incredible.

THIS SET IS GOING TO BE ‘‘REALLY GOOD, SUMMERY FUN. WE'VE GOT A FIVE-PIECE BAND BRINGING IN LIVE BACKING VOCALS, LOADS OF ELECTRONIC TEXTURES, BRASS, KEYS, AND ALSO SOME NEW SONGS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE HEARD BEFORE.

As someone who's played both the fringe and the main festival, how important do you feel the Tramlines weekend is for the local music scene?

Every venue gets a chance to platform and promote artists that they love, which is fantastic and makes it really important that there is a fringe element as well. It means everyone has a stake in the weekend.

Where can we find you over the festival weekend?

So, I will first be playing Tramlines itself on Friday afternoon at Hillsborough Park, at two o'clock on the library stage. I'll also be on the Fringe Stage on Devonshire Green, at one o’clock alongside so many Sheffield greats.

That’s going to be special as well.

What can we expect from your set?

This set is going to be really good, summery fun. We've got a five-piece band bringing in live backing vocals, loads of electronic textures, brass, keys, and also some new songs that you might not have heard before. That's going to be really exciting. Oh, and there might be a cheeky little cover as well…

You've got your first EP coming out this summer.

How would you describe this latest project?

It’s a real exploration of my styles as an artist. All of the songs on the EP are centring around the push and pull of relationships, and processing love and relationships of whatever kind. And there’s my new single out in July, called 'Building a Home', which I’m really excited to put out into the world.
