DANCING ON DEV GREEN!
At Devonshire Green, the main stage of The Fringe at Tramlines will serve up a wide range of music and a selection of food and beverages over the weekend. Under the expert curation of local music promoter, Papa Al, this stage strives to showcase a rich tapestry of musical genres that beautifully reflects Sheffield’s diverse cultural landscape.
Saturday headliners Jungle Lion are an energetic ska ensemble featuring 10 talented musicians. They will be joined on Saturday by reggae, funk, soul, and ska sounds from supporting acts, Solar Love Society and The Free Radicals. Speed for Lovers will perform their live electronic music whilst gifted reggae performer Ripton Lindsey, soul/ motown band Soul Battalion, Roma dancers Romano and Blue Street Brass join the party.
The highly acclaimed Beatles Dub Club from Chris Arnold will also feature on Saturday. Completing a varied lineup will be Los Vastardos, a new mystery band from Alex del Mango; and the Shine Performance Choir with Sista Soul..
Sunday at Devonshire Green is headlined by the magnificent Sheffield Beatles Project, joining the likes of Highway Child (soul, funk and blues), Shanghai Treason (folk-tinged punk rock), Tracks Presents (a big group of young performers from Sheffield Music School) and Rogue Siesta (funky reggae).
GETTING MOSHY AT THE WASHY
One of the city’s finest alternative rock boozers, The Washington, will be hosting everything from fast-paced punk on the Friday (see Avalanche Party and Ming City Rockers) and hard-hitting indie on the Saturday (The Rills) before seeing proceedings out with danceable rock’n’roll funk outfits (Kiziah and the Kings) and David Bowie extravaganzas (The Bowie Contingent).
From 10-piece ska partystarters on Devvy Green to street parties behind boozers, here are some of our highlights of the weekend…
THE BODEN BB BASH
Sheffield band and Exposed Award winners Before Breakfast have announced a weekend of free music on Boden Lane (behind the legendary Fagan’s pub) as part of this year’s The Fringe at Tramlines, on 22–23 July.
The 'Our Sweet Space' event is set to close down the road behind the pub (just like they did for St Patrick’s Day) and promises to be a ‘family-friendly and inclusive space,’ featuring a host of dreamy, creative and talented artists, an outdoor bar, tacos by Neepsend faves Piña, and, in their own words, some silly activities.
The weekend-long line-up features a diverse mix of emerging and seasoned talent including wonderfully uplifting and glistening harmonies from The Deep Blue, post-punk, prog-flecked psychedelia from headliners Sister Wives, a refreshingly different take on contemporary soul with delicious guitar from Kindelan, and, of course, Before Breakfast themselves.
KNOCKED IT OUTTA THE PARK
One of the city’s most popular fringe festivals, Pax in the Park, will be bringing another exciting collection of genre-crossing musicians and plentiful good vibes to Heeley People’s Park this year. Over the weekend you’ll be able to catch cosmic dross purveyors HENGE, cult rock n roll eccentric John Otway and swing/jazz aficianados the Jazz Hot Six – and that’s just a small taste of what you can experience across a packed lineup.
NO HOLDS BARD
The Shakey knows how to throw a Fringe at Tramlines party. Genre-fusing artist and producer JackieMoonbather has curated an intriguing Friday night lineup at the Gilbraltar Street venue, while Saturday sees a smorgasbord of Steel City talent taking to the stage including some of Exposed Magazine’s top shouts: Mickey Nomimono, Minds Idle, Drastic // Automatic, Nervous Pills and much, much more.
APPY DAYS
Pssst… As well as this handy printed guide, The Fringe at Tramlines has a dedicated app available on both Android and IOS. It’s the perfect accompaniment to this here publication, helping you to navigate the festival with maps, news and the latest listings (we can’t promise some of the printed times won’t change!). Simply scan the QR code and get involved!
Banging down a pub door ahead of opening time wasn’t quite how we envisaged our meeting with Sheffield three-piece Drastic Automatic, but, as The Closed Shop in Commonside, had err… closed up shop, we hastily relocated round the corner to the Springvale pub, where thankfully there were (faint) signs of life.
In a way it was a fitting start to a meeting with a band who describe their output as “music for people who are always running late” and, once the landlady had begrudgingly let us and the local early boozers in, we settled in the beer garden to catch a glimpse into the world of the dystopian tune merchants.
While they might be fresh on our radar, the current incarnation of the band – Sean Hession (Vocals), Benji Wilson (Drums) and Sissy Green (Bass) – has actually been knocking around since 2020, with Sissy telling us they “had more line-up changes than the Sugababes!” before he joined.
“It’s the first band I’ve ever had,” says Sean. “It’s not only been me learning how to play live though. Benji didn’t even play drums when we first started jamming; he was a bassist.”
Sissy started uni the year before and wound up living with Sean in halls in 2016. In his possession was the cultural capital of a fully functioning guitar amp and after borrowing it for a few years Sean and Benji finally asked Sissy to join in 2020, cementing the current line-up.
“I used to be into DJing and clubbing, and I still am,” explains Sissy, “but I had this amp that I didn’t play, and they knew that, so they’d come round and be like, ‘Can I borrow it please? Promise to bring it back.’”
“They were called the Gareth Barry’s at that time and were making the ‘Whale Milk Demos’, and I was like, ‘Please let me be in this band.’ And, eventually, they did.”
Sissy duly borrowed his brother’s bass guitar, started lending pedals, and then “smacked it and whacked it” until he had some riffs and thus, Drastic Automatic was born.
Sean expands: “That’s kind of our ethos when it comes to making music together. I don’t know anything about music theory. The only instrument lessons I’ve ever had were on drums when I was a little kid, but I lived in terraced housing in London, so the neighbours got really pissed off.
Their unique sound was cultivated during lockdown, in the abandoned former home of a Sheffield nightlife landmark, The Night Kitchen.
Benji said: “It’d been left to rot. There were holes in the floor and we were risking bronchitis from the mould. It was eerie and creepy, lots of silence –basically, it was just right for us to make music.”
Sean says: “At the time, it was fundamental to how the music sounded. Everyone was struggling mentally because of the lockdowns, and it became a place we could go once a week and be really fucking loud. It was a release.”
For Sean in particular, it provided some much-needed stability and focus at time when his life had been thrown into chaos.
Sean explains: “I had loads of crazy stuff happening in my life at the time. I was in a fire at my old student house in Broomhill. The
Ahead of their upcoming soiree at Shakespeare’s, Ash Birch caught up with Sheffield noise punks Drastic// Automatic to talk house fires, nuclear war and the local DIY scene…
equipment was really old, and it just caught fire one day. After that, I had this year of chaos and was living a little bit homeless.
“In a way it kind of incentivised me. I’d never played a gig live and me and Benji had been playing together for years. I want to make tunes and play them to people.”
Following the lockdowns, they finally got their chance to get up on stage. However, in keeping with Drastic Automatic’s chaotic style, it wasn’t always plain sailing.
Sean explains: “We’ve played nearly 20 shows now, but in a good proportion of the early ones something unexpected always happened. My very first show was at The Washington and my guitar just broke on the second to last tune.”
Now, with more gigs under their belt, they’ve begun to hone their stagecraft, displaying this newfound confidence at a recent Get Together performance. For us, they were the unexpected highlight of the day, setting the festival alight (thankfully, not literally) to a packed-out audience, who, by the second half of their set, were moshing amongst the dartboards of Neepsend Social Club to their almost unrecognisable cover of ‘Where’s Your Head At’ and original stompers like ‘The Cup Final’.
Get Together was easily their biggest show to date in their adopted hometown of Sheffield, a city they fell in love with in the years through uni and beyond.
Sean tells us why: “Sheffield is a great place to be in a band if you just want to make music.”
“It’s always had that spirit,” says Sissy. “The whole DIY scene and everyone helping each other – it’s got a collaborative spirit.”
With momentum steadily building, last year they released the first of four singles, ‘A Smash Hit for the People’, a cheery reminder of the ever-present threat of nuclear war.
Sean tells us: “The first version of that tune was written when there was a lot of tension between Iran and America, and potential nuclear fallout. I was trying to write lyrics based on the headlines and the media sensationalism around it.
“When we eventually released it, Vladimir Putin was arming up Belarus and it was around the time of the war in Ukraine, so it still seemed depressingly relevant.”
Benji added: “We’d always written songs about dystopia and apocalypse, and then COVID happened. We’d walk to the studio and there was just no one anywhere. Like full-on apocalypse Sheffield. The songs made even more sense.”
The Fringe at Tramlines | interview
CHARLOTTE BRANSON
We asked soulful Sheffield singer Charlotte Branson to take us on a stroll down musical memory lane…
THE FIRST RECORD I BOUGHT…
Paramore’s Brand New Eyes album is one of the first albums I bought. However, I listened to so many albums before that; my mum brought me up on artists like Sinéad O’Connor, Nirvana, ACDC, plus many more. It could be anything from opera to heavy rock.
MY FIRST GIG…
I started off doing open mic nights. I remember one of the first times I performed live was at a singing competition, aged 15. I then didn’t perform again until I attended an open mic night at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield. I was so nervous, but as soon as I went on stage and
started singing, my love for performing grew from there. Over time, my fear has faded and now I just look forward to performing the songs I have written to a crowd of people.
THE FIRST SONG I PERFORMED…
The first song I performed was ‘It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World’ by James Brown. When I started singing, I fell in love with music from the likes of Etta James, Aretha Franklin and James Brown. Along with learning that song, I learnt ‘At Last’ by Etta James. That song will always be one of my favourite love songs.
A RECORD THAT REMINDS ME OF A SPECIFIC TIME AND PLACE…
One of the most important people to me is my mum. I remember one day years ago being in the car with her and she played one of her favourite songs by Clannad, ‘Theme from Harry’s Game’. From then, whenever I hear the song, I always think of one of the most inspirational and incredible people I know: my mum.
I FIRST FELL IN LOVE WITH MUSIC WHEN…
It’s hard to pinpoint a specific time as I was brought up to listening to music daily from when I was born. I do feel Sinéad O’Connor’s Lion and the Cobra album was a big part of my upbringing. The first gig I went to
was to AC/DC. I loved seeing the energy live, the crowd bouncing off it. My grandad was an opera singer and I feel he is a big inspiration to me. He died when I was six-weeks-old, but his spirit and incredible musical talent will always be an inspiration to me.
A SONG I WISH I’D WRITTEN… Lana Del Rey is a big influence when it comes to songwriting, so I would pick one of her songs. ‘Video Games’ and ‘Born to Die’ by Lana Del Rey are both songs that are lyrically amazing.

HELLO ZPOR! HOW ARE YOU DOING TODAY?
Greetings human. I feel especially buoyant today. For we have released a new album on your planet: Alpha Test 4.
YOUR MUSIC COMBINES ELEMENTS OF VARIOUS GENRES, INCLUDING ROCK, ELECTRONICA AND PSYCHEDELIA. HOW DO YOU APPROACH BLENDING THESE DIFFERENT STYLES TO CREATE A UNIQUE HENGE SOUND?
Oh, dear human, we bring you music from other worlds. Thus, any similarities to the Earth genres that you mention are merely coincidental.
YOUR NEW ALBUM, ALPHA TEST 4, IS OUT NOW. WHAT SETS THIS RECORD APART FROM OTHER ALBUMS RELEASED ACROSS THE GALAXIES? This record is a unique interplanetary collaboration. The group known as HENGE is comprised of four lifeforms; each creature is of a different species with their own particular background and creative impulse. I am from Agricular in Cosmos Redshift 7. From a young age I was swaddled in the musical traditions of my people, surrounded by the ancient Agriculan artform we call ‘Cosmic Dross’. Another band member, Brother Goo, is
from Venus. He is the lone survivor of a catastrophic climate apocalypse on his planet and we found that violent bass frequencies had a therapeutic effect on his nervous system. Our drummer, Nom, is from Xylanthia in the Sirius Star System. He is primarily a water-dwelling creature; a many-tentacled being, whose amphibious rhythms are known to incite much dancing. The newest member of our crew is a human being known as Grok. His aptitude for wild synthesis is a huge asset to our mission. Though many interplanetary musical collaborations exist across the galaxy, we are unaware of any other records that have been made with this particular combination of species.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH THE SONGWRITING PROCESS AS A BAND? DO
With their landing at Pax in the Park imminent, we set up celestial communications with Zpor, front-creature of interplanetary cosmic dross purveyors HENGE, to discuss the band’s latest sonic transmissions and what we earthlings can expect from their visit.
YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC RITUALS, METHODS OR COSMIC TECHNOLOGIES YOU EMPLOY?
Yes, our method is to play. When I say ‘play’ I refer to the following definition: ‘Play – verb: to employ oneself in diversion, amusement or recreation.’ Or, to put it another way – fun.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE CREATIVE DIFFERENCES OR CONFLICTS WITHIN THE BAND? ARE THERE ANY STRATEGIES YOU EMPLOY TO MAINTAIN A HARMONIOUS WORKING DYNAMIC?
Actually, though it has never occurred to me before, we have never had any musical conflict within the band. We are so enamoured with each other’s creative suggestions that any creative differences are a source of wonder rather than conflict. And, now that we
have spent seven years and made multiple records together, our four minds are as one harmonious, utterly synchronised multi-mind.
YOU’LL BE JOINING OUR FRIENDS AT PAX IN THE PARK FOR A HEADLINE SHOW. FOR THOSE WHO’VE NOT WITNESSED A HENGE SHOW IN THE FLESH, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?
A HENGE sonic transmission is unlike any conventional musical performance that exists on Earth. One key difference is that we use a mixture of telepathic waves and sound waves at our gatherings. These two different wave types coalesce together in a spiral pattern (similar in appearance to the double helix of DNA). Once absorbed, this has the effect of stimulating euphoria in the human central nervous system. In
this way, we intend to catalyse joy in the hearts of the citizens of Sheffield on 21st July.
LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR HENGE?
We have observed that here on Earth, seriousness levels have reached a dangerous peak. This is accompanied by an epidemic of sadness which is spreading at an alarming rate. And so, our mission is to reach as many humans as possible with our sonic joy beams. These therapeutic soundwaves are known to provide lasting relief from the negative impact of seriousness.
HENGE WILL PERFORM AT PAX IN THE PARK ON FRIDAY 21ST JULY, 20:00-21:30.

Although only spanning a mere 8 years, from its opening night in 1973, Wigan Casino swiftly became the weekly mecca for hundreds of British teenagers obsessed with the sounds of Northern Soul. Instantly successful, the club pipped New York’s infamous Studio 54 to Billboard magazine’s title of ‘Best Disco in the World’ and with an enviable membership of over 100,000, the venue regularly hosted the likes of Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Jnr Walker amongst many others. Legend has it the self-proclaimed Godfather of Soul, James Brown, was also booked on one occasion to perform, but, as he looked down from the ballroom balcony at the mayhem of almost 1000-plus sweat-soaked, gyrating youths crammed onto the dancefloor below, Brown flatly refused to step on stage,
put on his cape and went home!
But the real and un-disputed ‘legend’ of Wigan Casino and instigator of the club’s historical all-nighters was Wigan-born DJ Russ Winstanley. Playing the cream of rare soul records from midnight ‘til 8am in the morning, records so rare and sought-after soul fans would travel hundreds of miles just to hear them, Russ and Wigan Casino continued the legacy created by past clubs such as Manchester’s Twisted Wheel and The Golden Torch in Stoke, and, throughout its eight-year reign reputedly attracted over one million customers through its doors!
2023 celebrates 50 years since Wigan Casino’s inception, with Russ Winstanley firmly back at the helm and on Sunday 23rd July the DJ makes a special appearance at the Fringe at Tramlines festival to play a DJ set followed by a meet and greet
at The Frog & Parrot’s ‘BLACK DOOR SOUL CLUB’ on Division St, alongside a plethora of local Northern Soul DJs.
It isn’t yet known whether Russ will end his spot with the famous ‘3-before-8’ – a trio of classic 45s: Tobie Legend’s ‘Time Will Pass You By’, Jimmy Radcliffe’s ‘Long After Tonight Is All Over’ and ‘I’m On My Way’ by Dean Parrish, three records always spun at the end of Wigan all-nighters to signal it was time to go home! He might alsoplay a copy of one of the most sought after Northern Soul records ever, ‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)’ by Motown star Frank Wilson – the very last track Russ played at the very last Wigan Casino all-nighter in December 1981.
“I played the ‘3-before-8’ and the place erupted,” remembers Russ. “I played the ‘3-before-8’ again and the same thing happened: shouting, clapping,
banging, cheering. I played them for a third time and then to break the atmosphere I played Frank Wilson’s ‘Do I Love You’. The place was finally shocked into silence. I picked up my record box, left by the side entrance, drove to a quiet place overlooking Wigan and cried my eyes out!”
We shall have to wait and see which 7-incher closes Russ’ BLACK DOOR SOUL CLUB appearance, but whatever spins on the turntable it’ll be a fitting tribute to 50 years of one of the biggest and most iconic Northern Soul clubs in the world, spun by one of the biggest DJ names in Northern Soul, the living Legend that is Russ Winstanley!
Russ Winstanley will be on the turntables at the Frog & Parrot from 17:00 on Sunday 23 July (meet and greet starts at 18:30)

DJANGO JONES AND THE MYSTERY MEN
Post-punk band from Sheffield, recently bursting onto the live scene with a screeching and energetic sound. With resounding vocals, punching drums, and overdriven guitars, the band’s volatility promises an undeniably relentless experience.
UNRAVELING THE MYSTERY
Ahead of a packed Fringe at Tramlines schedule, Sean Johnson caught up with one of Sheffield’s most electrifying musical acts, Django Jones and the Mystery Men.
As the rain pierced through our table’s umbrella in the beer garden of The Fat Cat in Kelham Island, the scene seemed fitting for a band who fuel themselves off of the ‘mundanity and normality of everyday life’. Armed with pints, smokes and a whole lotta anecdotes, Django Jones spoke of whiskey-soaked riffs, theatrical onstage antics, gigs in cemeteries and their busiest schedule to date. Although there has been some incarnation of Django Jones running since 2018, the current lineup consists of Will Tomlinson (vocals), Ciara Hurding (drums), Isaac Rodgers (bass), Joe O’Grady and Matt Jones, who interchange between rhythm and lead guitar. “Our early shows were chaotic. We thought we were good, but both ourselves and the audiences were really drunk,” explains Joe. The original lineup took a hiatus in 2019 and Will spent a year abroad studying in the United States. He returned to Sheffield with only one focus on his mind – to get the band going again. However, the band was in need of some new members. He found himself working the bar at The Fox and Duck in Broomhill, where he met Ciara, who had previously played drums in several local indie bands. She soon got jamming with the band, who now only needed a bassist to complete the ensemble.
Isaac, who happened to be drinking an alcohol-free beer one night in pub, got chatting with Will, who told him about his antics as the chaotic conductor of Django Jones and how he never drinks before
performing. Will informed him that they were currently for a bass player and the rest is history.
“The Fox and Duck made us,” chimes in Ciara.
The current Django Jones lineup, which has been transmitting riotous anthems for just over a year now are now a staple act on Sheffield lineups. Drawing influence from artists such as Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes and Avril Lavigne, the band’s sound falls
somewhere between punk and blues, with volcanic vocals, gut-punching grooves and ramshackle riffs all trademark features of their enormous sound.
“As a band, we definitely feed off Will’s energy onstage,” says Ciara. “If he feels that I’m not playing with the right intensity during a set, he’ll turn around and scream into my face! I’m like, ‘Fuck yeah!’”
“Will is the frontman of frontmen,”
adds Isaac. Will’s onstage persona, which he likens to acting an alter-ego, like a character from a film, has at times driven Will to states of improvised mania. He can be seen thumping his chest so aggressively that he will finish a gig bruised and beaten.
“We all work around the fact that whenever we play you will probably see Will manically run back and forth onstage,” explains founding member Joe.
There’s a distinct musical kinship shared between Will and Ciara, who try to electrify one another with their performances. During a gig at DIY punk venue Hatch, Ciara’s drumming became so intense that the band had to place a breeze block in front of her kit, which Will later tripped over, causing him to fall directly into the kit.
“We feed off of the unpredictability of our live sets” said Will. “We always sound different at every gig we play. There’s constant energy, shouting and bad chat”.
The electrocuting nature of the band’s live performances is best summarised through the wiring of cables, which often occurs when Will’s vocal cable and Joe’s guitar lead become entangled due to the two running the length of the stage.
“I live for those moments, man” Isaac says, rather enthusiastically. “Matt or Joe might break a guitar string, Ciara might snap a sick and we have to sort things out onstage, but that’s energy man, I love it!”.
For this year’s Fringe at Tramlines show, the band have one of the busiest schedule of any local act, where they are currently booked to play eight gigs across three days. They are attempting to beat the record for the most Tramlines shows ever played in one weekend, which is currently held by local legends Drenge, who played nine shows during a previous instalment of the festival.
The band are set to close the weekend with a headline show at Yellow Arch Studios, in Kelham Island, on Sunday 23rd July, as part of a lineup featuring local acts Drastic//Automatic and Richard Carlson Band.
