18 EXPOSED VS We somehow thought it’d be a good idea to shed our stabilisers and hit the mean slopes of Ringinglow with some pro mountain bikers. Because what could possibly go wrong?

22 ALT-J From emergent strange-sounding, slightly awkward musicians to, well, world famous strange-sounding, slightly awkward musicians – Gus Unger-Hamilton discusses the band’s journey leading ahead of their third studio album release.

28 IN SESSION Born on Highway 30, bred in Sheffield and rooted in traditional 60s rock – transatlantic vagabonds Ophelia tread the In Sesh boards this month.

34 DOC/FEST 2017 With the much-loved international film event returning to Sheffield this month, our resident dochead Mark Perkins takes you through the jampacked festival programme.

66 HOLY GOOF The Tuesday Club are putting on a summer party of epic proportions, featuring the likes of Mike Skinner, Chris Lorenzo and Wookie. Making his TTC debut is highly-rated bassline producer Holy Goof, who fellow DJ Leo Burrell collared for a natter.

70 SAINT ETIENNE “They’re like dirty words now, a place where people think that everyone is a Tory.” Sarah Cracknell talks about why the renowned dance-pop group are sticking up for the home counties.

Fierce name-calling, false promises and targets plucked pretty much out of thin air – it’s either the General Election or deadline week once more in the Exposed office… Boom boom. Nah, we’ve actually been getting on fine this week – probably because everyone’s looking forward to getting another busy issue out on the streets of Sheffield. It also helps that summer appears to have finally pulled its finger out. So once we’ve put this mag to bed, it’ll be a sprint for a Kelham Island beer garden to enjoy some respite before the fun and games start up again tomorrow. Anyway, back to business. We’ve had some great cover stars during my time at Exposed – Hawley, Fat White Family and Kano are personal faves – but getting Alt-J on the front is also right up there I reckon. Josh Shreeve does a great job in charting the band’s rise and where they find themselves today in his interview with Gus over on p.22. Throughout the mag you’ll also find chats with dance-pop legends Saint Etienne, Geordie funnyman Ross Noble, bassline producer Holy Goof and two top tips from the local scene in The Seamonsters and Ophelia. To keep your fingers on the pulse with other going-ons this month, our nightlife editor has rounded up some of the biggest parties heading your way and we’ve got an in-depth preview of this year’s Doc/Fest. There’s also a whole host of news and reviews to get your teeth stuck into, plus the regular bits and bobs that form your monthly Exposed Magazine. In truth, I’ve tried my best to keep the above slightly briefer than usual, as it’s only right to close this column with some words for those affected by the tragic Manchester bombings. Naturally, it’s been a strange, subdued atmosphere in the office since the news broke. It is hard to put into words the injustice of innocent people going to a gig and losing their lives, with many more forever scarred by such a horrific event. Music unites people and seeing an act of evil destroy what should have been a joyful evening has weighed heavily upon us all – and the heartbreak will still be felt for a long time to come. It’s easy to feel helpless when faced with such brutality, like such a wicked sucker punch cannot be defended against. But we fight back by not letting them take our humanity. We continue enjoying life and music and each other. Basically, we don’t let the bastards win. Take care everyone.

THE NIGHT KITCHEN SEEKS NEW VENUE SUPPORT

Tramlines announce three new stages for 2017

The Night Kitchen have launched a crowdfunding scheme to assist with the preparations for their new venue. After over three years of throwing huge parties, TNK, formerly Dirty Little Secret (DLS), is closing its doors this summer and have asked for donations from their supporters towards getting a new premises. A rewards scheme has been set up as an incentive, which will offer everything from hoodies to free event tickets. For more information head to crowdfunder.co.uk/ tnkrebirth

‘ASK FOR ANGELA’ CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED After announcing one of it’s the biggest line-ups to date, Tramlines Festival continues to up the ante ahead of this year’s celebrations with the announcement of three new stages – Into The Trees, PRS Momentum Tent and Hallam Shuttle. Situated within the main stage arena on Ponderosa Park, Into The Trees will be an intimate dance venue featuring a huge line-up of top DJ talent throughout the day and into the evening. Saturday will see the likes of French remix legend The Reflex and dancehall collective The Heatwave taking over the decks, while on Sunday UK reggae royalty Don Letts will be bringing the party vibes. Over on Dev Green the PRS Momentum Tent will showcase some of the hottest talent to benefit from one of the PRS Foundation’s music grants. South London rapper Ms Banks, psychedelic five-piece Flamingods and East London grime and UK funky producer Champion are just a few top picks on the genre-bustling line-up. Finally, the Hallam Shuttle will be a fresh take on the hugely popular Busker’s Bus which was last seen on the road at Tramlines 2014. Providing a route between the Ponderosa, Devonshire Green and Endcliffe Folk Forest stages, each bus will host performances from a programme of bands and solo acts managed by Sheffield Hallam students. First, second and third tier tickets for Tramlines 2017 are now sold out, but fourth release tickets are still available at just £49.50 + booking fee. Head to www. tramlines.org.uk to grab yours.

A campaign started in Sheffield last month to support safe dating and tackle sexual harassment in pubs, bars and clubs. The ‘Ask For Angela’ campaign provides a way for people to discreetly alert bar staff if they are feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. During May staff in 20 venues across the city were trained in how best to offer support upon a member of public asking for Angela at the bar; whether that’s calling a taxi, contacting friends or family, removing distress causers from the venue or calling the police. Head to sheffieldbestbarnone.com/ask-angelacampaign for more info

POP-UP PARK HEADING TO WEST BAR The University of Sheffield has teamed up with specialist regeneration company Urbo to open a temporary eco park in the West Bar area of the city. The park, which will be named Love Square and situated near the Crown Court, will open this summer with a café built from shipping containers also on-hand to keep visitors refreshed. The company hopes that as well as providing a space for the many employees working in close proximity, it will allow people to spend time in the area situated between the busy Kelham Island Quarter and the city centre. lovesquare.group.shef.ac.uk WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 15

“Where does this bus go?” “To all the designated stops, love.”

THE NATIONAL – THE SYSTEM ONLY DREAMS IN TOTAL DARKNESS There’s a touch of urgency about the usually slow-burning Ohio five-piece in this track. This more up-tempo offering taken from upcoming album Sleep Well Beast features an incredible guitar solo, high vocal refrains and driving piano chords. It’s also The National, so naturally it’s bloody brilliant.

THE FORGE BAKEHOUSE The definition of bread is a simple one: ‘Food made of flour, water and yeast mixed together and baked.’ But we all know it’s so, so much more. The smell, the sound, the texture; as an accompaniment or at the centre of a meal; sweet or savoury; a romantic rendezvous or a robust sandwich to keep us fuelled; this age-old food has a fond place in most people’s lives.

BAKERIES ARE BACK Good bakeries seem to be a thing of the past in much of the UK – but in Sheffield, as the demand for quality produce grows, there seems to be a small revival with The Forge Bakehouse leading the way. The brains and the driving force behind this Abbeydale Road establishment is Martha, who learnt the trade at the school of artisan food in Nottinghamshire. Although she has produced a masterpiece Martha describes it as more of an “amazing

302 ABBEYDALE ROAD SHEFFIELD, S7 1FL 0114 258 8987 INFO@FORGEBAKEHOUSE.CO.UK

accident”; a project that went from a hypothetical dream and research trip, all the way to making real plans for the bakery she would love to have one day. The Forge set themselves apart from other bakeries by using naturally occurring yeast and a longer fermentation time to create sourdough based loaves. This gives a unique taste to their bread and makes it easier to digest for those with gluten intolerances.

‘AVE A PIZZA THAT! Not only do they bake an exceedingly fine loaf but they also try their hand at pizza making, with a truly delicious and sumptuous outcome. Toppings are varied and inventive resulting in a taste sensation and one very big – but fast moving – queue!

BONOBO – BAMBRO KOYO GANDA (FEAT. INNOV GNAWA) Bonobo succeeds in creating another beautiful soundscape pulsating with rhythm and beats in this cut from his brilliant latest album Migration. The stunning video is also well worth a watch.

ROYAL BLOOD - LIGHTS OUT After a fairly “meh” return to the action with ‘Lights Out’, the second single taken from their new album sees them return to catchy, stomping, headbanging form. Granted, it’s still all very formulaic in terms of song structure but has just about enough bite to keep you interested.

IDLES – WELL DONE Brutalism is arguably one of the best – certainly one of the angriest – albums of 2017 thus far, and this scathing punk anthem is probably its finest moment. Taking shots at the Tarquins, Mary Berrys and Trevor Nelsons of the world, it’s three minutes of frenetic society bashing.

RITUAL – WOULDN’T BE LOVE Making the most out of new vocalist Mononoke, we’re loving this seriously enthralling dark electro-pop from the London-based quartet.

COTIC On the hottest day of the year so far, Exposed hit the downslopes of Lady Cannings Plantation Trail off Ringinglow Road to pitch our mountain biking skills against some of the best around. The challenge? To take on two of Cotic’s pro riders in three races that would see us hurtling down a hill at full pelt – winner takes all. The catch? We’d be riding one of the best mountain bikes money can buy; the pros would be riding a road bike, with all the grip of a back seat hand shandy. Here’s what happened… Words: Phil Turner Pictures: Richard Baybutt

18 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

RACE 1 We start off on a blue run, known locally as ‘Cooking on Gas’. Full of jumps, bumps, twists and turns, it’s one where you can really put the after-burners on. Chay is taking on Jon in this challenge and he goes first, setting off at a real lick, despite the fact his bike is liable to throw him off at any moment. After almost coming a cropper at the first bend, he manages to cling on and picks up speed, gaining confidence as he gets used to the unusual riding position. But before you know it, things go pear-shaped for Chay as he takes a berm (that’s a steep bend on a high bank to me and you) at too much pace and flips himself out of the front door. After losing a good 15 or 20 seconds recovering and getting going again, he gets to the bottom in 3:13:65, a good 30 seconds or so slower than he would expect to do on his usual apparatus. Jon follows him down, racing on the Cotic Rocket - a race-proven Enduro weapon, which the Cotic Steel City Media Racing team took to multiple UK Gravity Enduro podiums in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Despite being an amateur, Jon has balls the size of

space hoppers so Team Exposed has high hopes. He’s immediately into his racing and flies around each bend at a pace close to the pros. Despite a few wobbles on the way down, he makes it to the bottom in one piece and in good time, clocking 3:07:38. First blood, Exposed. Chay shows us his scratches and tells us what it feels like to hurtle down a hill on a bike built for roads. “The steering is totally different, so I was definitely a lot more cautious than I’d have been on my usual bike,” he says. “It’s pretty terrifying to be honest.”

ABOUT COTIC: Cotic is a bike company based in Calver which specialises in producing high end mountain bikes made primarily of steel, a substance more compliant than aluminium from which most bikes are made. Frames start at £400 and complete bikes start at around £1500 and they even have a demo rider who’ll show you just how good they are so you can try before you buy.

MEET THE RIDERS

JON WALKER

Representing Exposed is bin designer and Dwiss inventor Jon Walker. Ok, he doesn’t work for Exposed. But he’s a big mountain bike fan and he drinks with the boss so he was the best we could get, kapish? Plus he looks good in long socks and a helmet.

CHAY GRANBY

First up for Team Cotic is Chay, who is a regular on the podium at Enduro races across the country, which basically means he’s one of the best in the business. What he isn’t used to is hareing around hairpin bends of loose soil and gravel on a bike designed strictly for the smooth surfaces of Sheffield’s roads.

JAMES SWINDEN

Another Cotic pro, James is the sort of rider you could stick on a wheelbarrow and give him a push and he’s still beat most of us down a trail. He won the PMBA Enduro series last year, finishing on the podium in six out of eight races, and this year so far he has finished 1st, 2nd and 2nd. Tidy.

RICHARD BAYBUTT

RACE 2 Next up, it’s an uphill battle. With the road bike less of a disadvantage in this instance, Richard takes on Exposed rep, Jon. Rather than going off separately, this time they race together and after giving Jon a few minutes to get his breath back, they’re off. They’re neck and neck for the first minute or so, but eventually Jon’s previous exertions catch up with him and he slips behind, handing a point back to Team Cotic. Richard is happy with his time of 2:24:23 and Jon less so, a full 30 seconds back on 2:54:16.

RACE 3 Our final race pitches Cotic’s mountain

ABOUT DWISS: Dwiss is the brainchild of Jon Walker and is a brand new recycling unit designed here in Sheffield. It houses four large compartments to accommodate your waste and recycling needs, plus it looks way nicer than your standard bin. Jon is currently offering discounted units if you pre-order – head to www.indiegogo.com and search for Dwiss to get yours.

mastermind James against Jon, who is blowing out of his behind now after two races back to back. This time they are on the longer trail, known as Blue Steel, which according to James is slightly more technical. Shit. James sets off first as Jon gathers his breath, and finds life on the road bike no easier than Chay. After almost wiping out on corner one he finds his feet, going at a fair lick while just about staying upright. That is until right a few turns from the end when he misjudges a corner and stacks it, doing his arm some long lasting damage in the process. But he jumps back on quickly, finishing in a respectable 3:02:71. It’s a decent time despite the fall - so to stand a chance of winning, Jon is going to need a clear run. As before, he starts well and is certainly up with the pace at halfway, until he decides to miss a bend completely and rides straight into a tree. It’s enough to slow him down and knock his momentum, meaning despite his best efforts, Jon finishes in 3:09:14. As I said to him at the top: “It’s all downhill from here.” Boom.

Racing Jon on the uphill battle is Richard, mountain bike enthusiast and in house Cotic photographer. He may not be a pro, but he’s hurtled down more hills than Wile E Coyote, and usually with a little more control.

VERDICT:

It’s a Cuban for Team Exposed (close, but no cigar) but at least we came out of this one with our dignity intact, despite a few scratches along the way. Ho hum.

Collegiate Crown House

+44 (0) 114 213 4080 crown@collegiate-ac.com www.collegiate-ac.com

If you’re looking for top end student accommodation to move into this September, look no further than Sheffield’s newest development, Crown House… Collegiate AC’s brand new Crown House development raises the bar for student accommodation, ushering in a new standard of sophistication never before seen in Sheffield. Affording a prime location, Crown House is set in lively West Bar, close to the heart of Sheffield’s urban centre, and is a short stroll to both university campuses. Kelham Island, the city’s hippest new district is a stone’s throw away, boasting some of Sheffield’s finest cafés and restaurants, including Jöro, Urban Quarter, Craft & Dough, The Fat Cat, The Milestone, The Bhaji Shop and Kelham Wine Bar… many overlooking the river Don. It’s the ideal social hub to live in close proximity to, and promises to deliver a unique student experience as the area continues to develop further. Crown House is part of the Prestige Collection from Collegiate AC which mixes impressive studios with inspired social spaces, just a few of the reasons why it brings more to student life. From £150 per week, the facilities are genuinely stunning and include an on-site private fitness suite, private dinner party room, BBQ and alfresco dining area, private cinema room, gaming booths, flexible lounge area, and state-of-the-art study zones. With a 24/7 concierge team and 300mb/s ultra-fast Wi-Fi, it really is the 21st century student experience. Crown House affords high-specification facilities to make student living effortless and personally-tailored to result in a lavish student experience which will stay with students long after Graduation.

Heriberto Cuanalo, Collegiate AC’s CEO recently commented on the new build, which sets the standard for student accommodation in the UK. “Sheffield boasts world-class educational institutions, a good work-life balance, and is attracting more and more students from both the UK and overseas,” he said. “Today’s Sheffield students are expecting more than just a place to rest their heads though, which is why Crown House is part of our Prestige Collection, with only our very

best features including an outdoor courtyard cinema, private dinner party rooms, and refrigerated stores so students’ online grocery shopping will be ready, chilled, and waiting for them upon their return.” During the week of June 5 there will be an opportunity for prospective students to look around the facilities and rooms. Look out for more details and lots of giveaways on the Exposed Magazine twitter, Facebook and Instagram as well as Collegiate’s social media platforms.

Words: Josh Shreeve @JJShreeve

At first glance, RELAXER is a struggle to digest. Consisting of only eight tracks with artwork that looks like it’s been botched together on Microsoft Paint, it barely fits the conventional album format, but then again, Alt-J don’t seem to do things the normal way. WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 23

far from the trio’s third album they’ve released a glitchy video game inspired by Sony Playstation’s ‘LSD’ alongside lead single ‘3WW’, plus a short film about a wood mouse, narrated by Iggy Pop, for follow-up track ‘In Cold Blood’. “We always treat the videos as an opportunity to make a short film. We’re not interested in miming to the song in the video,” Gus Unger-Hamilton (keys and vocals) tells Exposed. Though they’ve always been labelled as one of the quirkier bands to form after the noughties, you’d be hard-pressed to find them miming and busting out routine dance moves, OK GO style. Instead, they’re a closer fit to one of their most cited inspirations, Radiohead. RELAXER’s short tracklist has the same number of songs as the mega-band’s eighth studio album The King of Limbs; an unlikely coincidence one might say. The trend at the moment seems to be about puffing out albums to their full potential, turning what was once a concise collection of carefully selected tracks into fullon playlists. In the past few months Drake and Gorillaz have released albums that together total almost fifty songs - and even though Alt-J now have the fan power behind them, it’s not something that’s crossed their mind. “If someone recommends me a book and it’s nine-hundred pages long I’m probably not gonna read it, and similarly I don’t feel the need to put twenty tracks on the album. I think eight really well-written tracks that fill you up is better than a long tracklisting.” The good news is that the handful of tracks are some of their boldest to date. ‘Hit Me Like That Snare’ sounds like a darker, more bonkers Talking Heads number, ‘Adeline’ unravels like the soundtrack to an epic Coen Brothers film and ‘Deadcrush’ pulsates with a bravado of thick hiphop beats. Upon asking if they could throw a featured rapper into the mix, Gus seems interested but doesn’t quite let on as much as he may know. It’s a similar tone taken when there’s mention of the album’s plethora of strings being recreated on stage. “It’s something that we are looking into. Obviously it’s quite a hard thing to do for every show but hopefully for some big shows we’ll be getting some extra musicians to play with us. We will do it when we can.” You get the sense there’s a few surprises to come from the band’s live sets this summer, but you can be certain that two guest features likely to pop up are Marika Hackman, who returns to lend vocals in ‘Last

Year’, and Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell from album opener ‘3WW’. “Both those songs have strong narratives and they’re almost like films with characters. In both those cases they’re playing the roles of female characters, so it made sense to get women to sing those lines.” Wolf Alice, who Gus calls their “little siblings”, received similar levels of hysteria around their debut album as Alt-J did when the then four-piece scooped the Mercury Prize for An Awesome Wave. “It’s amazing at the time. You have to kind of move on from it.” The band not only moved on, but at a frightening pace, touring for the next three years; the only break coming when they nipped into the studio to record second album This Is All Yours in 2014. This time around they took a few months off before putting together RELAXER, recording it at various spots across London with Charlie Andrew, producer of their previous records. “We knew we wanted to play festivals in 2017 so that meant we had to get the album out early summer. It was quite intimidating to have that deadline but we knew that we could do it.”

“I would find it hard to imagine a situation in which we wrote and recorded a load of songs and found they just don’t fit onto an album together. I think we’ve established ourselves as a band with a large breadth of sound – even our first album went all over the place, from chamber pop to indie to folk. We seem to have the gift of putting songs together and them falling into place as quite coherent albums, which is a real blessing.” With three albums now to their name and headlining modestly-sized UK events such as Boardmasters and Blue Dot Festival this summer, it’s only a matter of time until bigger event organisers come knocking. How fitting it would be for the triangle enthusiasts to be elevated onto the greatest podium of all: the Pyramid Stage. “It’s amazing to be talked about as future Glastonbury headliners. I don’t think we’re there yet but we love that festival. Maybe on our fourth album we could possibly be in a position to step up to that plate. It’s nice to look at your catalogue of songs and choose those that you’re fully confident in playing live. We used to have to play the entire first album and pad it out with B-sides and covers just to get the set up to an hour, which was pretty tough. After that it becomes easier to play solid bangers and not think, ‘Oh god, here comes that really quiet deep cut that nobody really likes!’” One set-filler that springs to mind was an unlikely mash-up of Kylie Minogue and Dr Dre played at Latitude in 2013, but also one which isn’t remembered so fondly by the band themselves. “It’s lovely to be able to ditch things like that,” Gus says, chuckling. “When you’ve toured songs enough you get to know which aren’t working as well as others. My fiancée for example was like, ‘Yeah, Bloodflood, Pt. II is a good song but people tend to be talking during it a lot’, and we don’t know that sort of stuff because we’re on stage.” It’s best to turn to family and friends for critical feedback on new material, he claims. “They’re doing quick little

interviews in the audience, making little polls!” With an album that feels like a 50/50 split between delicate unfurling strings and bombastic percussion with nonsensical lyrical riddles, you do wonder which way Alt-J’s live show will swing once RELAXER has bedded itself into the family. One of its first roll-outs will be at London’s O2 Arena as part of the venue’s 10th Anniversary celebrations. “Trying to play really quiet songs at a big show is really hard so you do find yourself defaulting to the big, loud songs. If we were doing a sort of Alt-J prom with a seated audience who were all there, really paying attention, then it would be awesome to play the more delicate songs.” In 2012, when touring much more intimate rooms such as The Harley, they remain a name many locals fondly say played in Sheffield before making it. Although modest, Gus seems well aware their next stop in the city will be far away from The Harley’s sticky floorboards but still recalls their Tramlines set there. “It’s a really cool venue. We’ll happily pop by (to The Harley) for a drink after wherever we play. We’ll do shots at the bar after the gig,” he says before laughing disgustedly at my suggestion that he should go to West Street Live to sample a Chuck Norris shot – two inches of vodka and chilli powder. It seems that no flaming Sambuca, vodka or chilli shot is enough to suffice Alt-J’s postshow tipple. Just like their music, their choice of drink seems to lend itself to more left-field options available. “I like picklebacks,” he says trying to one-up me in the least-desirable drinks department. “You have a shot of whiskey and then a shot of pickle juice – literally the stuff that’s in a jar of gherkins as a chaser – and it’s amazing. Go to a Morrisons, get yourself a bottle of whisky and a jar of gherkins and go nuts.” Forget the VIP bars at festivals and awards ceremonies, if Alt-J need a fix, you’ll find them in the pickles and condiments aisle at your local supermarket.

ALT-J’s latest album RELAXER is released 2 June

Words: Alex Harban Photography: Lewis Evans

A unique musical project, with roots in both Sheffield and the east coast of the US, Ophelia was born out of a collaboration between local lad Samuel Taylor and Virginia-born actress/songwriter Rebecca Van Cleave. Bringing together influences and experiences from their respective homes, the duo have moulded a BritishAmericana sound penned largely on US highways but honed back in the Steel City. With a debut EP recently released and a new single not far around the corner, Exposed invited the duo along to partake in our next Exposed In Session feature and settled down with a pint

beforehand to discuss their story thus far. Why not start off by telling our readers a bit about your musical backgrounds? Becca: My dad was singer-songwriter so I grew up doing things like musical theatre and would always be singing around the house – in the shower mainly! It’s only been recently where I’ve taken it outside the shower and sang in front of actual people. I released my first EP in 2015, which I made with Sam, and it was produced by Ed Cosens from Reverend and the Makers. Sam: I’ve been in bands for years, the main one being a Sheffield band called Dead Like Harry – we even released a record. Since then I’ve played with various different artists and released my own stuff. I’ve been writing and playing music since I was about 17. When did it first become apparent that

there was a creative spark between you both? Sam: The first song we did pretty much came out of nowhere. We were in the Gulf of Mexico, on the Emerald Coast, and I was just playing the guitar when Becca started singing over it. It just happened really. The song was literally done within half an hour. And what do you think makes the dynamic work with Ophelia? Sam: It’s really exciting for me to be writing with Becca. When you first start writing it’s like the rules don’t really exist, but as you get older you start to develop and follow these weird rules

UPCOMING GIGS AT THE GREYSTONES

around songwriting. It’s nice to have someone around who shows you that they don’t exist. Becca: Sam is great for interpreting most of the stuff I hear in my head. A lot of times I’ll be walking down the street when something pops into my head, so I have to pretend I’m on the phone to someone when really I’m singing into it. Then I go to Sam and just say ‘work this out!’. With this mix of backgrounds and influences coming together, how would you describe the sound you’ve arrived at? Becca: I think it’s really difficult. People have described us as sounding like anything from Jeff Buckley to Paul Simon to Feist. One actually said if Nick Cave and Feist had a baby it would be us. When did you make the decision to focus on this as opposed to your solo stuff ? Becca: It’s a lot more fun to have to someone to do it with, to celebrate the highs and bitch about the lows. Sam: We both have songs which we see as our solo stuff but we’ve had such a great time writing this record together and we’ve already written another one; it’s just great fun so we’ve stuck at it. We headed to America late last year just working out who we were. We took our time and spent a year making it happen naturally instead of rushing it. The Ophelia EP has a nice mixture of sounds and styles across it. Do you think that’s due to the transatlantic influences of the band? Sam: Yeah, lot sof people have said that to us but the truth is we only realised it later. You can definitely tell that the songs have been written by two different people. It was recorded in different studios across different countries too so, yeah, it’s bound to have a varied sound. Becca: It means that there’ll be something on the record for everyone, so it’s all positive for me! There’s a theme that runs through the upcoming album which pulls it all together, it’s takes you from the beginning of our journey. So when do we get to hear the LP? Becca: The album will be out in the autumn, but we’ve got some exciting things before then. Sam: We’re releasing another single ‘A Little Too Late’ on 2 June. It’s one of the ones Becca 30 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

wrote and I just love the lyrics. It’s got Eamon McLoughlin on the fiddle, which is a great coup for us. We recorded the video by the Blue Ridge Mountains in Becca’s hometown of Virginia, which was pretty memorable. Sam: We’ve got a tour starting on the 15th in London and then heading over to Europe, then we’ll be playing some UK dates, definitely Sheffield, Leeds and maybe London again. You had your first full band Sheffield show at The Greystones early last month. How was that? Becca: It was such a lovely evening. We had Ed Cosens playing along with Adam Crofts from The Crookes. It was pretty full and we got two encores from the crowd. Sam: It went down really well, it was packed and I wasn’t expecting that at all. The record is definitely a band record so it’s nice to perform it like that. It’s just difficult when you travel because it’s very expensive to take a whole band on the road! Becca: If we had it our way we’d play with a band every time. Right then, down to the business at hand. Do you know what you’ll be playing for your Exposed In Session? [Looks and whispers are exchanged] Becca: I think we’ll be doing a version of the new single A Little Too Late. Sam: It’s an upbeat song but I think we’ll slow it down and almost invert it like Ryan Adams did with Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’. Name one person who needs some Ophelia in their life? Becca: Like, who do we want to go on tour with? It’s too hard – there are hundreds of names! I’ll be nice and give you three. Becca: Bruce Springsteen definitely needs some Ophelia in his life; I think The Boss would actually get on with us. Michael Eavis at Glastonbury too. Who else? Sam: Chris Evans. Wait, is he still cool? I don’t know, just a cool radio DJ. So you want to tour with Bruce, play at Glastonbury and get some more radio airtime? Becca: Exactly! A bit of ambition never hurt anyone.

THIS YEAR’S DOC/FEST WILL FEATURE A LIVE PERFORMANCE BY NONE OTHER THAN JOHN GRANT HIMSELF.

Mark Perkins takes us through the plethora of insights on offer at this month’s Sheffield Doc/Fest. Now firmly established as one of the world’s major film festivals, Sheffield Doc/Fest is almost a quarter of a century old this year. Last year’s event welcomed over 32,700 festival goers, including around 3,500 industry delegates from 60+ countries, and this year the organisers are staging more opportunities than ever for the folk of Sheffield to join in the fun and celebrate all aspects of non-fiction story telling. Doc/Fest likes to kick off with a big event, to the point where the opening night at the City Hall has become one of the festival highlights. This year it’s the world premiere of Daisy Asquith’s ‘Queerama’, which marks 50 years since the government decided that being homosexual was no longer a criminal offence. Through footage taken from the BFI National Archive, the film explores the world of gay men and women in the 20th Century. The film is set

against a backdrop of music by John Grant, Goldfrapp, Hercules and Love Affair, and will be followed with a live performance by none other than John Grant himself. Talks and interviews with some high profile speakers are always worth seeking out during the festival, and this year there are several not to be missed. Ian Hislop will be talking about the fundamental role that satire plays in documenting our world and searching for the truth. Sir Lenny Henry will be in conversation with June Sarpong to talk about the campaign for change through humour and his passion for blues music. Documentary film maker Perter Greenaway will be talking about his new film on German theologian Martin Luthor and predictions on how we will tell stories in the future. To top all this, there’s free public access to the Doc/Fest Exchange in Tudor Square,

where all manner of talks and interviews will be held throughout the six days. Lest we forget, there will of course be almost 200 films on offer, screened at various venues across the city. The festival’s long-time home is the Showroom, but there’s a brand new venue on the Moor, The Light Cinema, and two free outdoor screens in Tudor Square and on Howard Street. There are also films showing at the Abbeydale Picture House and, for the very first time, The Leadmill. Closing the festival will be another world premiere, a film honouring the Yorkshire MP Jo Cox. Toby Paton’s ‘Jo Cox: Death of an MP’ will be followed by a discussion about the legacy she’s left behind. To celebrate Jo’s life, Sheffield residents and communities will also be invited to join a lunchtime picnic street party at Doc/ Fest Exchange.

BREXITANNIA Experiencing the real world through Virtual Reality has been a growing feature of Doc/ Fest, and this year’s free Alternate Realities Programme of events will allow audiences to touch, swipe and play their way through ground-breaking sensory storyworlds. This immersive strand of the festival continues to grow and this year, in addition to the Millennium Gallery, it will spill out into two new interactive VR domes on Tudor Square and Upper Chapel Street. And they’re all free! And of course Doc/Fest wouldn’t be the same without those ‘special events’ which seem to fit vaguely into the increasingly fluid definition of what constitutes a documentary. This year there are two installations/events worth a special mention, both of them in iconic Sheffield spaces which were at one time in danger of disappearing, but have now been reclaimed.

The first of these is in the Abbeydale Picture House, where they’ll be screening Florian Habicht’s, ‘Spookers’. The film is about people who adopt zombie roles in a ‘scream park’, and the 1920s cinema will mirror this by becoming the venue for Sheffield’s very own zombie world, as the historic building becomes a ‘cavern of thrills’ for one night only. The other is in good old Woolies on the Moor, where the Theatre Delicatessen will host the premiere of ‘Doom Room’. Members of the audience will be blindfolded and transported to the afterlife by becoming the main character in a Virtual Reality experience. There are various ticket options, so for individual films and talks, or for a pass to see whatever takes your fancy you can visit www. sheffdocfest.com, or the Festival box office which will be returning to Tudor Square.

Timothy George Kelly’s film reveals the broad and conflicting ideas of what it means to be British.

Second helpings at Silversmiths After 12 years at the helm of the Arundel Street eatery, a period of time which has seen the venue develop a national reputation for fine dining, Silversmiths founder Justin Rowntree is handing the reigns over to new owner Michael Standerline.

In 2005, following ten years working as a recruitment consultant, Justin re-mortgaged his house, risked everything and opened ‘The Runaway Girl’, a late-night live music venue and tapas restaurant. This was an especially brave move, as 12 years ago the now vibrant Cultural Industries Quarter was effectively an industrial wasteland. After a life-changing visit from Gordon Ramsay in 2008, The Runaway Girl ended and Silversmiths was born. Justin has spent the last nine years building the Silversmiths brand of fine Yorkshire food and warm hospitality – making a stirling effort of it with the restaurant winning awards year in, year out (including five-times winner of Exposed Best City Centre Restaurant!). So with all this success and hard work why is he leaving? Justin told Exposed: “The opportunity to exit after 12 years and do something completely different was something I couldn’t refuse. I’ve just launched my new business consultancy, Sweet Spot, which(I hope) will use my psychology degree, ten years in recruitment and twelve years of building a business to help

all sorts of companies grow, and – you guessed it – find their ‘Sweet Spot’. Leaving the business I’ve built with blood sweat and tears was a tough decision, but it’s time for pastures new.” New owner Michael, who has worked with Justin over the last 18 months as his business advisor and accountant, is just the man to take Silversmiths to the next level. Michael has big plans and has already brought in a new GM, Front of House Manager and additions to the kitchen team in hopes of taking the restaurant’s reputation to even loftier heights. Speaking upon his decision to take the brand forward, Michael told Exposed: “Silversmiths is a real asset for the city and something I truly believe in; when I had the chance to take over it was a no-brainer. Rest assured, it’s in safe hands and I want to push the brand and the standards through the roof – the goal is two AA rosettes this year.” He continued: “My new team has already launched a great new daily lunch and Sunday lunch menu, put in place an early bird menu for the pre-theatre crowd and post-work diners in the area. We’ve even created an intimate private dining area and later this year are planning the ‘Silversmiths Loft’, a secret space for exclusive dining up on the 3rd floor. I can’t wait to welcome old customers and new through the door to show them how our plans for shape up in the months and years to come.” WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 49

Jay’s Halka Salmon Get ready for an Indian summer with this lean, quick and delicious recipe. Halka means ‘light’ in Indian, and with everyone counting calories ahead of their hols, this dish has all the nutrients needed in order to help you get in shape without missing out on great food. Pan-fried Salmon, tomato garlic and coriander puree with saffron infused rice, all ready to eat in less than 15 mins. Preparation time: 5 minutes | Cooking time: 10 mins | Serves 2

Ingredients 2 salmon steaks 1 whole tomato 1 tsp tomato puree 1 or 2 tsp paprika powder 1 tsp curry powder 1 clove garlic 1 handful fresh coriander 1 pinch fresh fenugreek 1 pinch seal salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 lime wedge 1 mug basmati rice 1½ mugs of water 1 Pinch saffron ½ White onion, finely chopped Cherry vine tomatoes

Method Rice Place rice and water on boil in a saucepan at full heat, add finely chopped onions at the same time with a little saffron (leave some for garnish) and mix. Rice should be ready when

the water has evaporated (it will be complete at the same time as the remainder of the dish). To check if rice is ready, pick a grain and squeeze. If it sticks to your hand it’s ready. Rice can be served as required with the rest of dish; add some saffron on top to garnish.

Puree Finely chop whole tomato and garlic thoroughly, place in a non-stick frying pan on medium heat, let this caramelise then add paprika, salt, pepper, curry powder, fenugreek, tomato puree and stir. Simmer for 2/3 mins until all liquid has evaporated. Add finely chopped coriander at the very end and place onto your required serving plate.

Twisted Burger open new venue

Head to facebook.com/TwistedBurgerCompany for more info

Salmon & cherry vine tomatoes Using the same frying pan, this time on full heat with no oil, place in cherry vine tomatoes on the stalk repeatedly turning until charred. Pan fry the Salmon skin side down in the same frying pan until golden (roughly 1 min), then turn on remaining 3 sides of the steak and repeat. Turn back on skin side and add salt, pepper and paprika for seasoning. Finally, squeeze lime on top and your Salmon is ready to be plated on top of the puree. Add the cherry vine tomatoes on the side of the plate and enjoy!

Ran 805 CA Pho Ope THE PLACE

The Sportsman has been and probably always will be your classic suburban Sheffield local; it’s got a large catchment of locals who’ll always need feeding and watering. But after a recent refurb, which has seen the interior, exterior and the menu given a makeover, it’s now likely to appeal to folk from even further afield.

THE FOOD

The menu here is probably not too dissimilar to one you’ll have seen at similar pubs before. Starters such as parsley breaded mushrooms vie for your attention with crispy calamari and king prawn cocktail. Wanting to sample as much as we could, we went for the Ember Sharing Platter which combined the first two alongside garlic ciabatta bread and a selection of olives and dips. The mushrooms were super succulent; as good as I’ve tried at plenty of higher-charging establishments. In terms of mains, I thought the set menu looked like good value. Two courses for £9.49 is a deal in anyone’s book and with my rump steak chargrilled beautifully and well complimented by a Bordelaise sauce – I was pleased with my choice. My other half is watching watch she eats so took on the chicken, bacon and avocado salad. It’s a fairly staple dish but was light and fresh and there was certainly plenty to get through. My meal came with a great little pud; a mini peach and raspberry cheesecake with a coffee or tea of your choice. It was actually a decent portion for a mini pudding and was fabulously flavoursome – I’d heartily recommend it.

THE VERDICT

It was peak time on a Friday admittedly, but even so, The Sportsman was rammed with hungry punters and trust me, no-one was leaving hungry. And with decent flavours, generous portions, affordable prices and a decent refurb up its sleeve, it’s easy to see why. We’ll be back.

Bringing the West Street heat Independent smoke BBQ restaurant Firepit BBQ will open to the public on Friday 26 May. Situated at 138 West Street, the venue will pride itself on using only locally-sourced meats with all dishes prepared fresh on the premises. Head chef Matt Eggo, who has strong experience in steakhouses and BBQ restaurants, recently returned from a three-week tasting to Canada and is looking forward to bringing some innovative new ideas to the menu. He told Exposed: “FirePit BBQ is set to take the ‘smoke BBQ’ concept to another level. Though Sheffield has a growing number of steak house-style chains, this is going to allow me to truly wow the local audience with ideas I picked up in Canada.” For more information head to www.firepitbbq.co.uk.

THE PLACE

A proud, family-run restaurant which laid down roots on Abbeydale Road before the area became the trendy independent hotbed it is today, La Mama is a well-reputed gem when it comes to bringing a taste of Latin America to the Steel City. The cosy venue could probably hold 25-30 diners at a push, but exudes plenty of character and charm with traditional Latin style décor in the dining area adding a splash of colour and culture to proceedings.

THE FOOD

The tapas menu is a wide-ranging selection of Spanish, Chilean and Brazilian dishes that ensures all tastes are catered for with an equal amount of choice across meat, fish and vegetarian options. We were informed that three each would suffice for a hungry stomach, so following fresh bread and olives ordered Empanadas de Carne, Chorizo a la Sidra and Zorza from the meat section, while Chile Prawns and Empanadas de Jaiba made up the fish dishes before rounding off the order with a suggestion from the friendly serving staff, a cheesy aubergine vegetarian dish called Berenjenas al Horno. Empanadas de Carne is effectively a posh Chilean pasty, with spicy beef, onion and olive wrapped together in a pastry parcel – especially tasty when accompanied with the tangy salsa pebre. The meaty chorizo pieces swimming in an apple cider stew tasted as succulent as they looked, while the Zorza dish, a spiced pork loin skewered with juicy mushrooms between tender meat chunks, was a real winner for us both. I’d already been warned of the supremely tasty king prawns, but still couldn’t help but be bowled over by their size and juiciness. The Empanadas de Jaiba were the same lightly fried pastry parcels as before but packed with delicious, fresh white claw crab meat instead of beef. A welcome surprise was the aubergine dish recommended by the La Mama staff. Oven baked in a tradition clay pot, the aubergines were smothered in melted goat’s cheese and tomato sauce – all simple, solid flavours but as with everything else we had from the menu, immensely tasty and satisfying.

THE VERDICT

Authentic dishes and flavours served in an intimate but friendly setting, La Mama’s reputation as one of the finest tapas spots in Sheffield is surely here to stay.

For more than 20 years now Ross Noble has been the king of spontaneous standup, an unstoppable force of kooky wit and longstanding champion of the bizarre. And with a huge tour of latest show ‘Brain Dump’ taking the wild Geordie around the globe this year, he’s showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. In truth, he’s a little knackered. Kooky Ahead of his arrival in Sheffield for The Leadmill’s Comedy Festival, Ben Williams spoke to the mischievous comic about his occasionally scary fans, playing a murderous clown and dating Harold Bishop from Neighbours.

So, the latest show is called ‘Brain Dump’. Yeah, I got it from a customer review on Amazon for one of my DVDs. They wrote, “This is just like a massive brain dump,” and I thought: ‘Oh yeah, that’s exactly what my stuff is! I’ll have that.’ Naturally, your ‘brain dumps’ are largely improvised. Is it still a risk, no matter how 58 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

long you’ve been doing it? No, the “risk” is all relative. It’s like driving a car; after 25 years you don’t get in a car and say, “What if all this goes wrong?” If you hit a few bumps in the road you just think: ‘Oh, this is fun, let’s bounce around for a bit!’ How do you think your comedy has developed since you started? The main change is that, because I’ve built up this really loyal audience, there’s more of a shorthand. When I first started, if I was talking about something a bit leftfield people would say, “Oh God, where’s he going with this?” Whereas now that’s what people want, so they go, “Oh right! Now where’s he going with this!?”’ Your acting CV has bumped up in recent years, especially horror movie roles. Do your stand-up comedy skills come in handy? It’s definitely easily for a stand-up to do straight acting than an actor to do comedy. In the horror movie Stitches – this sounds

mad because I was playing a killer clown – but I wanted to play it as truthfully as possible. I didn’t want people to say, “Oh, that’s just Noble dressed as a clown.” I’ve just filmed another horror, and that’s just a straight horror film; there are no laughs in it. Which was weirder: playing a murderous clown, or going on a date with Harold Bishop in the Australian comedy ‘It’s a Date’? Oh, the date! That was my idea, so I only have myself to blame. It was a mate of mine’s show – he asked me to write and be in an episode. Afterwards I realised that I could have picked pretty much any Australian actress to date; I literally could’ve written myself a love scene! But when he asked who I wanted to go on a date with I said, “Ian Smith, who plays Harold Bishop.” We laughed about that for about an hour. But he agreed to it, and then the next thing you know I’m on a set sat opposite him. Back home in the UK you’ve clocked up 17 appearances on Have I Got News For You.

TOP PICKS

Just how much do you love that show? I absolutely love it. I was still at school when the show started, so it was a really big deal when I first did it. It’s still the top panel show on telly. Because it’s been on for so long, it’s got a really strong sense of what the show is and has become very well defined. On one appearance you and Paul Merton got every single question wrong and scored zero points. What happened there? We did it on purpose! I’d done the show so many times and I jokingly said to Paul, “Why don’t we just see if we can score no points?” It’s actually harder than you think, because when an obvious story comes up it’s really hard not to say the answer. Charlie Brooker was on the other team, and at the end he said, “I can’t believe we won!” and Paul went, “Well, we can!” Paul Merton was ranked at 54 in Channel 4’s poll of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups. In 2007 you came in at number 10, but when they revisited the poll in 2010 you were bumped to number 11. What happened? Ricky Gervais. Oh. When they did the first programme, he hadn’t done stand-up. By 2010 he’d started, so he was put in the top 10 which pushed me to 11. Which is fair enough – it was voted by the public and he’s popular. There are probably 10 or 15 acts that nobody knew in 2007 and are now enormous, so if they do another one I’ll probably end up at 25! So we’re hoping that they don’t do another poll? I don’t care, to be honest. It’s like those 100 sexiest men or women lists; it’s never won by someone who works in a chip shop in Loughborough. So I take all those things with a pinch of salt. Like Gervais, you have a very loyal fanbase; they see your show multiple times, leave gifts for you on stage… Is it sweet or creepy? 99 percent of the time it’s very sweet and very flattering. Every now and then you get one where you go, “Okaaaay… That’s a little bit scary…” Can you give an example? I was in New Zealand once, and I was on my phone to my wife. I put the phone down and it rang again. I thought it was her ringing back, so I went, “Hi!” and this voice said, “Hello.” It was a complete stranger who had rung every hotel in Auckland pretending to be my girlfriend. That was a bit terrifying. The thing is, someone being a fan is very flattering, but there’s a big difference between somebody liking your comedy and someone wanting to wear your skin as a suit. One of the hottest names to surface from the bassline revival in recent years is Holy Goof, a young Coventrybased producer whose Skepta bootleg caused a viral storm online earlier this year. Leo Burrell caught up with bass connoisseur ahead of a debut appearance at the Tuesday Club Summer Carnival on 6 June. Hey Holy Goof! How you doing? Good mate, just been working on some music as usual. I’m at home in Coventry at the moment and the weather’s actually pretty nice, so I’ve been enjoying a bit of that too. It might be a question you get asked a lot, but what’s the name all about? It’s pretty jokes. *Laughs* Yeah, it is! There isn’t really an explanation to it. I just wrote a load of names down on paper that were original and easily searchable, then I picked one out with the help of a friend. I’m not a former priest or anything like that! We’re loving your latest release ‘Eyes On You’ – there’s some serious energy on that track. And the video for your Skepta ft. Young Lord ‘It Ain’t Safe’ bootleg is unreal! Will the latter be getting a release? Yeah, it was a long time back and forth until I felt I’d perfected it. As for the Skepta bootleg, I just made it for my live sets originally but the video got so much feedback and love. I just got a barrage of messages so I decided to upload it to the internet. But shoutout to Skepta for the original, obviously! We’re looking forward to your set at the Tuesday Club Summer Carnival. Have you heard about TTC’s reputation? It’s been a huge feature of Sheffield’s nightlife for over 18 years now. I have. I’ve always seen big, solid line-ups and lots of my peers and people I respect playing there. It always looks busy and it’s a great brand. I’ve had a lot of messages over the last few years asking when I’d be coming to TTC, so I’m buzzing to be making my debut! Considering its history of bassline/bass music, is Sheffield somewhere you have a lot of time for? Definitely. 2007 was a golden period in my life. TRC is now a good friend of mine, and there was other artists like Mr Virgo, TS7, DJ Q and loads others all getting great support from Sheffield. The period had a massive influence on myself and my music career. Every time I come up it’s a great atmosphere; people enjoy themselves and really go for it. In fact, I actually played my first big set in Sheffield. 66 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

What can you recall from that first big set? I was playing straight after Skepta on Halloween back in 2015, which was really early on in Holy Goof. It was mad playing to a sold out O2 Academy with everybody going crazy; it’s really made the city a special place for me. Last time you played here it was with Chase & Status. Do you change the way you play when you’re playing with DnB artists? I play through loads of different sounds anyway, so it’s not something I worry about. I’ve found that DnB crowds at nights with artists like Chase & Status have enjoyed it from early on, so I don’t really feel the need to change much. I just do my thing and roll with it. You’ll be playing alongside Wookie and Chris Lorenzo at TTC. Are they friends or influences of yours? Yeah, they’re both very cool guys. I’ve met Chris a few times, Wookie once or twice. Wookie’s tracks like ‘Battle’, ‘Scrappy’ and ‘Far East’ influenced me from a long time ago. I’ve been following Chris for years, back from when he was with Cause and Effect, and also before that too. We loved your Boiler Room set back in February. How was that for you? Yeah, it was pretty special! I have to give massive thanks to Butterz and Jamz for bringing me down to be part of that. I don’t get massively nervous before a set anymore, but that was a bit different because it was recorded live on camera. But I got down there and saw everybody having fun and the nerves quickly went. Oh, and thanks to Boiler Room for having me as well. Are there any festivals you’re playing this summer besides Boomtown? There’s a few including a once in a lifetime for me at Glastonbury this year. I’m also playing Detonate Festival in Nottingham, Love Saves the Day, Kendal Calling, Made festival in Birmingham – plenty! I’m also doing a headline tour in the autumn with a few dates around the UK, and Sheffield should be on there. Any upcoming artists you’d recommend checking out? Notion, Bassboy, Skepsis, although some of these have been around a while. There’s a young guy called Skue-K who’s very fresh, and I’m really excited to hear what he comes out with next. It’s really interesting stuff

It’s been a busy year for Saint Etienne. The band celebrated the 25th Anniversary of debut record Foxbase Alpha in January and now they’re back with their brand new one, Home Counties. We caught up with Sarah Cracknell ahead of their show at Sheffield City Hall to chat about the new album, the fondness of home and musical guilty pleasures.

Words: Jess Peace

70 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Hi Sarah. What’s on the agenda today? On my agenda today... I had to take my son to the doctors this morning, he had a blood test and passed out. Poor thing! I’ve been doing some interviews and then I am going to go for lunch with my Husband. We’re going to get some Thai Food I think. I love Thai Food! If I had one type of food that I had to eat for the rest of my life, that would be it. Your new album Home Counties is released on 2 June. With your debut album Foxbase Alpha celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, how would you say the band’s style has changed in light of the new record? Erm, well it hasn’t actually. It has elements from a lot of our previous albums in there. And it is very similar to our first album in the way that it has lots of little interludes and segments between songs. So with that I think the current record goes back to a lot of our old records. Was it a conscious decision to go back to your old style? No, it just turned out that way. We wrote with a few different people and we recorded with a guy called Sean, a really brilliant, creative multi-instrumentalist. He coloured it all in so well that it has so many different elements in it. Some of it sounds like Good Humour, which we recorded in Sweden years ago, and some of it sounds like our earlier albums. The only idea we had when we started was the home counties theme, which we didn’t stick to rigidly but it was useful because plucking ideas out of thin air is quite tricky sometimes. We pinned the main idea on the home counties: what they mean to us and what we think they mean to other people. What do you think other people think of the home counties? They’re a bit of a dirty word now, a place where people think that everyone is a Tory. We are basically trying to reclaim it as not being quite as bad as what people think. I left the home counties when I was around 16/17, and I think, with the distance you get after moving away, you begin to appreciate where you grew up more a bit more. So yeah, I’m sticking up for the area a bit! Do you have favourite track on the album? I did really like ‘Heather’, which was fun because it’s a slight departure for us. I think if you heard it you wouldn’t immediately think ‘oh, that sounds like Saint Etienne’ and it might just get in your head a little bit. I like doing things that sound totally different.

that age – in the good old days.!He said he was thinking of starting a band and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I said “Oh, I can sing”. This wasn’t strictly true, but it all started from there. I don’t know whatever possessed me to sing in a band. I don’t know where it came from or how it happened. From there I fell into a string of bands for a while but there were complications and we never got a deal. I wanted to do something different so I went to drama school for a year. When I finished and started doing some fringe theatre and then I met Bob through a mutual friend. They wanted someone to sing on the next single and I just fell into it. But I’m glad I did, obviously!

Your first album came out back in 1991. How was the music industry changed since you first started out? Everything changes so fast. It has changed massively for us with the internet age with people downloading music for free and people making their own music from home. That’s the brilliant side of it: the technology. Anyone can make an album at home today, which I think is fantastic. And the way that music is released is very different. We used to put a single out and then a week later the album, whereas now things kind of dribble out digitally. I also think that people don’t listen to albums so much now. I mean, obviously people do, but some people seem to just cherry-pick, you know? Do you have any current musical guilty pleasures? I quite like about half a dozen Coldplay songs. Isn’t that awful? Something came on the radio yesterday and I was singing along and then I thought ‘Oh no, this is Coldplay again!’. Maybe half a dozen is pushing it. There is just something that I like about them and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. Can you name one of the songs? I like the most recent one. I think it was a collaboration with someone. See, I can’t even name one so it’s not that bad! And finally, what’s next for Saint Etienne? I don’t know really. I can’t possibly think past Christmas, that is as far as we have got. We have the British tour, the European jaunts, the US tour and then a few gigs at Christmas. It’s already overwhelming, but in a good way. It is peaks and troughs, this Saint Etienne lark!

With that in mind, do you think it will appeal to the older Saint Etienne fans? Yes, as our earlier albums were also quite eclectic. It has lots of interludes and nice touches that I think will appeal to the people who started off on this journey with us. What first attracted you to making music? I kind of fell into it really. I was a big music fan anyway and then I met someone in a pub when I was15-years-old. Back then you could get served in a pub when you were Home Counties is released 2 June and Saint Etienne play City Hall Ballroom on 10 June.

LIVE REVIEWS

IRON MAIDEN @ MOTORPOINT ARENA For half a dozen men hurtling into their sixties, you could forgive Iron Maiden for becoming a cabaret act a long time ago. But such is the seminal NWOBHM chieftains’ dedication to their incomparable legacy, that these heavy metal veterans continue to surpass themselves at every juncture. It’s been six long years since the band’s last Sheffield visit – perhaps even longer since some of tonight’s audience saw daylight – and the show entices the crustiest, most grizzled contingent of their diehard fanbase out from the cracks to rejoice at the Iron’s return to the City of Steel. The opening salvo of ‘If Eternity Should Fail’ and ‘Speed Of Light’ – a both taken from the band’s latest album, and the tour’s namesake, The Book Of Souls – wastes little time in captivating a capacity crowd; and it is testament to the six-piece’s artistic endeavour that, almost forty years into their colossal career, these new songs sound as vital as anything from their mid-eighties heyday. The legendary triple guitar assault of Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers is on blistering form, but the real star of the show is frontman Bruce Dickinson, who comfortably outperforms those twenty years his junior, while barely breaking a sweat. The younger and more fair-weather fans abandon their seats to scream along to the likes of genuine classics ‘The Trooper’ and ‘The Number Of The Beast’, but it is the recent thirteen-minute-long opus ‘The Red And The Black’ that soars highest. No strangers to theatricality, ‘The Book Of Souls’ – a cautionary tale concerning the preservation of the soul – sees Dickinson sport a Mayan death mask, as he delivers arguably his finest vocal performance of the night. Following a stunning rendition of ‘Fear Of The Dark’, Eddie takes to the stage to find an adoring audience in full voice – the sight of Dickinson tearing an artificial heart from the iconic, fifteen-foot mascot, before splattering the front row with its blood, is quite something to behold. Taking into account the existence of both Metallica and Black Sabbath, it’s difficult to conclude that the Leyton sextet are the greatest metal band of all time; but on tonight’s performance, there can be no doubt that Iron Maiden’s spectacular heavy metal circus is the finest, most thrilling spectacle of its kind. Up the Irons. Words: Chris Lord Pic: Lewis Evans

ALT-J RELAXER They say all good things come in threes: the number of members in Alt-J, the sides of a triangle which pops up when you hit their name onto a keypad and now, their trio of albums. Standing at just eight songs long, a nod perhaps to Radiohead’s The King of Limbs, whom they’ve cited as inspiration, RELAXER could be the band’s masterpiece, split in half by wall-to-wall bangers and unfurling strings. Opener ‘3WW’ wades in coolly, the haunting vocals from Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell a signpost that Alt-J mean business from the offset. The trio are at their best when bombastic production takes over and frontman Joe Newman is spitting nonsensical jargon. ‘In Cold Blood’ has the boldness of ‘Every Other Freckle’, backed by booming horns while ‘Hit Me Like That Snare’ sees Newman at his most riled up, spitting “F**k you, I’ll do what I wanna do” over a barrage of thrashing drums, whirring synths and tormenting cow-bell. It’s ‘Deadcrush’, though, that weighs in heaviest for the three-piece. This trap belter is the knock-out blow on any still doubting their credibility to headline major festivals – the only thing missing is some snarling rap verses. They’ve found a way to puff out their more delicate pieces too, with a posse of strings turning weary moments into emotional rollercoasters. ‘Adeline’ could have been penned as a thriller soundtrack and Marika Hackman’s vocals on ‘Last Year’ save it from descending into a set of sleepy diary entries. After the success of An Awesome Wave and This Is All Yours, this latest in the series needn’t have come so soon but the Leeds trio’s return may prove crucial to where they go from here. 8/10 JS

PAUL WELLER A KIND REVOLUTION

SAINT ETIENNE HOME COUNTIES

Canonized as the Modfather to the Britpop mob nearly two full decades after being anointed the most thrillingly articulate voice of incoherent youth since Townshend, Weller has continually faced the paradox of those who achieve longevity and stature: how to carry on when you’ve effectively nailed the zeitgeist for two different generations. The answer, of course, is to keep on keeping on, something Weller has done throughout his career. It hasn’t all been golden –for every Wild Wood or 22 Dreams there’s a Heavy Soul – but A Kind Revolution is up there. Lead -off single ‘Long Long Road’ seems incongruously smooth until one remembers that from the bass-line intro and swelling Hammond of ‘A Town Called Malice’ through ‘You’re the Best Thing’ to now Weller has always had a fascination with old school R n’ B stylings. Dad rock it might be but eight children and 25 albums in there’s still enough lead in the pencil to make a mark. AJ 8/10

A young Turk who became an Old Master once said of the Georgian poets that they go out and write a pretty little poem about a pretty little thing on a pretty little theme. They meant it disparagingly, feeling that poetry should be concerned with the big issue of life. But there’s a parallel between the exquisite minimalism of much of such work and Saint Etienne’s approach on Home Counties – not least because both are preoccupied with what England might be. The album explores the liminal spaces left behind now that the idea of the Shires and the centre have been revealed to be wholly rhetorical constructs. As with St. Etienne’s best work, the whimsy is shot through with sharp observations and an acute eye for tension resulting is a compelling mix of whimsy, satire and story-telling. Ir proves that when you want to talk about the big things – and there’s nothing bigger than this nation post-Brexit and preElection – then the devil is always in the details. AJ 9/10

THE SEAMONSTERS LOST AND FOUND You get a ‘vibe’ with some local bands, a little hunch that everything – talent, personality and sound – are all in the right place to see them do really well indeed. Suffice to say, ‘indie-glitter’ six-piece The Seamonsters have put themselves right on that list with this debut single, a hugely catchy and uplifting indie-pop ditty. Swirling guitars, 80’s-style keys and stirring vocal harmonies – they’ve effectively encapsulated a carefree summer into a five-minute track. With plenty of time left to hone their sound and continue earning their spurs on the live circuit, expect to hear plenty more from them soon. 4/5 JF WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 75

A QUICKIE WITH…

MARY WROTE

A well-known face on the Sheffield music scene due to previous exploits with the likes of The Search Party (later known as Silents) and a lengthy stint flying solo, Howarth tells us a bit about getting back into this band malarkey. Eh up Adam. Tell us a bit about how MARY WROTE came together? MARY WROTE is something I personally have wanted to do for a very long time. Through knowing a few people within the music scene, I managed to get something together but it was a case of biding my time in order to get the best members possible. Such members come in the shape of bassist Jack Ansell (former Harrington and currently also in Best of Fiends) and drummer Stephen Broughton (formerly of Feral Brood) – both amazing musicians! After spending a long time plying your trade as a solo artist, what made you decide to get a band together? I’ve been playing solo for a long time, but don’t see MARY WROTE as an extension of that. We’re a band, it’s not ‘Howarth and The Show’. Having all been in bands previously we have some great experience and can influence each other in the writing process. You’ve been proper little teases and released a 30 second clip of the demo for your first track. When can we expect the full shebang? Yeah, we threw out a little teaser and a couple of videos of our track, ‘JUNIPER’. This was us trying to see how other people felt about our sound, and the feedback has been great so far. As for the full shebang, we’re unsure but we’re recording things all the time. I suppose people will have to revert to the old fashioned way of hearing a band – actually going to gigs! Tramlines. What’s the craic with you guys? We’ll be playing at The Rocking Chair on Friday and The Frog and Parrot on Saturday – great venues and we’re all very happy and excited to be playing both. www.facebook.com/Marywroteuk 76 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

With

BILL RYDER-JONES THE FIRST RECORD I EVER BOUGHT

Was a 5-disc happy hardcore compilation thing. I tried hard to like it, but it was just so awful I’d hire Beatles records from the library in secret.

THE FIRST GIG I EVER WENT TO

Australian Pink Floyd at the Royal Court in Liverpool when I was 16. We [The Coral] all went together and it blew my mind. I think it was the first time I smoked weed and they started with ‘In The Flesh’, which was pretty amazing.

THE FIRST SONG I EVER PERFORMED

I used to enjoy all the Beatles songs during assembly at primary school, Yellow Submarine and Yesterday etc. As an actual performer, though, it would’ve been at the first Coral gig, and I’m trying to remember the name of the song that started the set … nope, it’s gone. It was a bit like Paul Weller meet Pink Floyd, so make of that what you will.

ONE SONG I WISH I WROTE

There are so many! ‘Face Like Summer’ by Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci is one.

ONE SONG I WISH WAS NEVER MADE

Again, there are so many, although I think ‘Sex On Fire’ pretty much encapsulates everything I hate in music.

I FIRST FELL IN LOVE WITH MUSIC WHEN

At about the age of 13 I realised that that the rules were pretty simple. It became like a puzzle for me – and I love puzzles.

A SONG I CAN’T GET OUT OF MY HEAD AT THE MINUTE ‘B-Dennis’ by GINTIS.

A RECORD WHICH REMINDS ME OF A SPECIFIC TIME AND PLACE

‘Five Leaves Left’ reminds of living in Cambridge after I left The Coral for the first time. I would’ve just turned 21, I think. It was an odd time and I can’t really listen to it now if I’m honest.

We get to know a bit more about the up-and-coming indie outfit as they lay down the law on a few topics. On starting out young Just go for it! There are so many opportunities out there, and with platforms like YouTube and Spotify at your disposal now is the best time to be in a start-up band. There are plenty of other platforms out there which cater for young bands and artists too. How to make an indie-glitter sound It’s basically just a mix of 80s pop and indie music, and we have plenty of funky tunes coming up that show it perfectly. There’s isn’t really any glitter yet, but we have tried to get sponsored by some glitter companies – fingers crossed we can get that sorted eventually!

The ‘all-girl band’ tag To be honest, we never really saw ourselves as an all-girl band until people kept pointing it out. We just wanted to make music; it’s everyone else that made a point about us being something out of the ordinary in that sense. It can be a bit shocking how many people come over after we’ve played and seem surprised that we can actually play. Releasing singles and working towards a debut album At the moment we’re focusing on releasing a lot of really great singles, waiting for the response and seeing how we go. We’ve had over 11,000 listens of Spotify and loads of great feedback for ‘Lost and Found’, which

is obviously great. There are a lot of songs we’ve already recorded which we could look at releasing, but it’s just a case of picking the best one to share next. Picking a genre We’ve always had a huge passion for music and we all like a lot of different genres, so we’ve tried to mix a lot of the sounds we like and put them together to make an original sound. Most of the stuff we’ve released so far has a summery feel to it, but we’ve got another side to us. Swapping the seaside for Alice in Wonderland Yeah, it’s total coincidence that a few of our videos to date have been filmed by the seaside – it’s

not going to be an ongoing thing! Our new stuff is quite different so will have a different theme. We’ve actually got a new track about Alice in Wonderland that we’re hoping to be released, so you can expect something completely new for that.

The Seamonsters play the RS Bar on 10 June and The Rocking Chair 30 June. Head to facebook.com/ TheSeamonsters for ticket links.

It’s June already, ladies and gents, and hopefully by the time this issue goes to print the rain will have stopped and – fingers crossed – it will officially be beer garden weather. We have another jam-packed month ahead, and lots of opportunities to get involved in what’s going on. If you are politically-minded and keen to support LGBT campaigns, pop along to one of (QASh) Queer Agenda Sheffield’s meetings which take place fortnightly at Sheffield Hallam. They also hold socials on the weeks in-between at Café Latte – perfect if you want to meet new people in a more informal setting. Action for Trans Health will also be holding a meeting at Hallam on 7th June, open to anyone whose gender identity isn’t wholly the same as the one they were assigned at birth. They will also be hosting Otter Lieffe’s Margins and Murmurations book tour on 14th June, also at Hallam University. Written by a trans woman and sex worker, this brand new novel puts transgender, sex work and femininity at the centre of a twisting, multi-layered narrative. During this event Otter will be reading from the book and signing copies. She will also introduce ‘Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria’ by Victor Silverman and Susan Stryker – a powerful documentary about transgender women and drag queens who fought police harassment at Compton’s Cafeteria in San Francisco’s Tenderloin in 1966, three years before the famous riot at Stonewall Inn bar in NYC. The Kingdom Come, Sheffield’s finest drag king night, is back on 3rd June with their holiday camp edition featuring a hefty dose of silliness, singing, lip-syncing and dancing. There will also probably be pineapples and definitely cake. Put on your holiday best, because we’re all going on a summer holigay! Gender-bending costumes encouraged! It will be surreal. It will be fabulous. All hail the King. Whether you prefer a more chilled out afternoon to a big night out, or if you are looking for somewhere to nurse your hangover from the night before, then head down to Sheffield BiSocial’s board games day at Café Latte on 4th June. Anyone is welcome to attend. We’re also now officially on the countdown to the city’s biggest LGBT event of the year, Pride Sheffield. They will be holding an open meeting at Charles Street on 29th June, so head down if you want to find out more about what is planned for the festival this year.

Snatched I have a confession to make. I’m not a massive Amy Schumer fan. Maybe it’s because I’m an (almost) middle-aged man and not really her target audience, maybe it’s because truth told, I haven’t seen that much of her work and therefore not given it the chance. Whatever the reason, Snatched, rather surprisingly, changed my mind. It stars Schumer as Emily Middleton, a brattish woman-child who takes her mum Linda (a return to action after a 15 year Hollywood hiatus for Goldie Hawn) on a package holiday to Ecuador after her fledgling rock star boyfriend dumps her because of all the ‘pussy’ he’s going to get. “Are you sure you don’t mean inspiration?” Emily suggests… “No, pussy.” Her mum and her have drifted apart. Emily is self-centered and lives her life so she can post flattering photos of herself on Instagram while mum Linda has locks all over her house and hasn’t slept with anyone since her husband left her. Throw in an acrophobic piano-teaching adult son who still calls her ‘mama’ and Ecuador is way too risky for the nervy Linda. And she’s right to be concerned. Their dream holiday quickly goes awry after Schumer falls for hot Brit James (nicely played by Tom Bateman) who leads the pair into the arms of some rather unpleasant locals. As the duo try to escape the clutches of their Latin American kidnappers, the film charts not only their physical journey but also their emotional one as both mother and daughter realise how much they have taken each other for granted. Yes, the plot is ridiculous and clichéd, and yes, there are large sections that simply don’t gel, but Snatched is genuinely funny, peppered with enough genuine belly laughs to forgive its shortcomings. The scene where Schumer is dumped is arguably its highpoint, whilst the misunderstanding between “welcome” and “whalecum” as Emily and Linda arrive in their hotel had me spilling my nachos. No, not metaphorically, I actually spilt my nachos. And it all boils down to the fact that Schumer and Hawn are really decent comediennes. Their timing is good and they have enough likeability to keep the plot holes firmly at the back of your mind throughout. Consider me Snatched. 3/5 PT

WONDER WOMAN - 2 JUNE A lot is riding on this film: Warner Bros hope it will be the breakthrough their DC Comics adaptations so desperately need in their flailing cinematic universe. Initial footage is encouraging, but we’ve been here before – and optimism is wary at best. But we could be suprised!

MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE – 2ND JUNE Worthy of mention if only for its brilliant title (In America it’s called ‘My Life as a Zucchini’ because Americans call courgettes “zucchinis”. Silly Americans.), this strikingly visualised stop-motion film currently stands at a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I can imagine the moment director Nacho Vigalondo pitched Colossal to the Hollywood execs who funded it. “It’s a pretty straightforward run-of-the mill premise,” he says. “A troubled alcoholic moves back to her family home in small-town America only to discover she is inadvertently terrorizing Seoul, you know, the capital of South Korea.” “Mmm… and how is she doing that?” “By controlling a kind of giant reptile that appears out of nowhere and tramples on people. Trust me, this one’s got legs… ” Gloria is an unemployed former online journalist who has escaped her small-town upbringing to land in New York where she has settled with stiff English boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens). But with the failure of her career, she has become a drunk and Tim eventuyall kicks her out. She moves back to her family home sleeping on a blowup bed. She quickly bumps into an old friend, Oscar (carefully played by Sudeikis) who clearly had more feelings for her than she did for him, and he offers her a job in his bar. Once the two of them are joined each night by two of Oscar’s friends start for some after-hours drinking, they realise that Gloria’s drunken behaviour is having a dramatic impact on events in South Korea. It’s kind of B movie-era Godzilla meets Grosse Point Blank and the results are as weird as that sounds. And while the final act is a success, I was left with the strange sensation that I would happily have watched a Japanese B movie or an art house drama – just not at the same time. 2/5 PT

THE MUMMY - 9TH JUNE A retelling of the classic horror tale, the setting and the story may seem familiar and uninspired, but Tom Cruise is ALWAYS watchable and tends to choose good projects. If Kurtzman can find more of the spirit of his Star Trek, and less of his Cowboys and Aliens standard, we could be onto a winner.

TRANFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT – 23RD JUNE With the exception of ‘The Rock’, Michael Bay makes horrible films, and the Transformers series are the nadir of his work so far. He promised he would stop, and yet here we are, another entry into the aggressively unentertaining Transformers series. Just stop.

Known for his portrayal of Officer Crabtree in classic sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo, Arthur Bostrom is currently starring in Olivier Award-winning comedy Out Of Order. The celebrated farce sees Bostrom playing a frustrated hotel manager caught up in a sordid affair involving death, deceit and disaster. He told us a bit more about what we can expect.

The tour is a celebration of Ray Cooney’s 70th year in the business – a staggering achievement! How has it been working with the ‘Master of Farce’ himself? It’s great always to work with a “master”. He always knows how the comedy works. My character for example is a very serious, very severe man. Every farce needs this type, so his embarrassment and eventually ‘revealing’ moment brings him down to size. I wanted the role because I knew I could do it. Since first being written by Ray Cooney in 1990, what do you think has made Out of Order such an enduringly hilarious piece of theatre? It’s just so well constructed. It’s not offensive in any way but every night it always works.

I’ve never been in a play with so many laughs. There some really great comedy acting in this production and huge laughs from beginning to end. Out of Order features a stellar cast of TV greats. Are you all having as much fun off stage together as on? That’s been one of the great things, just how well we all get on as a company. I think it comes over on stage too; people can tell that we are having fun so relax and enjoy it too. With so many weeks on the road, what home comforts do you make sure you always have with you? I’m travelling with a caravan so I take my home everywhere. I always have some wine and good cheese in the fridge!

Ray Cooney’s Out Of Order arrives at the Lyceum Theatre 14-17 June. Tickets and more info available from www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk
