Thursday 14th March Siren Maiden Sheffield Launch - Siren Craft’s stupendous multi barrel aged annual release, launching on draught here at 5pm, with additional bottles from this excellent Berkshire brewery as part of our Dark City Fringe event. Sunday 17th March Hangover Roast & Beer Party - Join us on the final day of Sheffield Beer Week for a hangover curing afternoon of Sunday roasts. We’ll be serving four roast dinners, two curry inspired, with two veggie/vegan and two meaty options made using four Sheffield Beer Week beers. Happy 5th birthday to Sheffield Beer Week *raises beer glass*, I could never have imagined the citywide event would have come this far. We started out with roughly ten venues hosting the odd event in celebration of this wonderful independent beer scene and grew to over 35 venues and more than 60 events in 2018. With an estimate of more than 3,000 people visiting events across the week, beer really is a key driver for tourism in this city. Add inspiring cultural attractions like the Millennium Gallery, the Kelham Island Museum and the Peak District, sprinkle sublime local food offerings and you can see why Sheffield really is a top destination and a truly premier beer city. It’s also a city that residents are hugely proud of, with determined locals making things happen from scratch and talented individuals staying true to their unique spirit. It’s a city of dreamers and, crucially, makers. Brewing is as creative an output as art and music and one thing Sheffield has in abundance is creativity. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again; Sheffield Beer Week wouldn’t be what it is without those involved. It shows the unity and community of the Sheffield (and global) beer scene. Beer tourism is a crucial cog to Sheffield’s continued success and positive economic growth. The Steel City is not only attracting engaged and inquisitive tourists to the area for beer, outdoor sports and creative arts but also new beer-focused businesses are re-locating here. On top of this, Sheffield Beer Week really adds vibrancy to the city, boosts the local economy and keeps the high street buzzing with good beer chatter! Sheffield beer week: events

In 2019, on top of the core beer, food, community and heritage strands, there will be a continued celebration of women working in the beer industry with International Women's Day preceding the week on 8 March, highlighting the historical importance of women's role in the roots of brewing. Building on IWD, we're tackling diversity and inclusion in beer as a whole this year. Whether it's addressing the lack of diverse representation in the scene and in the media or championing inclusive events, it's a starting point to wider actions and discussion on these complex challenges. Ultimately, we’re celebrating the positives both can bring. The official guide has expanded this year with the help of our headline sponsors Lallemand Brewing and print partners Exposed Magazine, enabling us to feature more in-depth pieces for you to enjoy reading. We're also able to support a number of charities and instrumental organisations this year including the Lord Mayor's Charity Fund and the British Hop Association. The People’s Photography Trail has grown from last year’s exhibition with Bristol photographer Nicci Peet a welcome addition to the event this year. This trail (head to page 20 for the full rundown) will add to the Outdoor City element of this year's Beer Week, encouraging people to walk, run or cycle the ‘beertography’ trail. Dave Pickersgill will once again be hosting his popular pub heritage walk around the city, as well as a 5k run organised by the Sheffield chapter of the Mikkeller Running Club to shake off those hangovers! We're working closely again with Norwich based collective Fem.Ale, who showcase the creative and innovative work being done by women in the brewing industry. They've been instrumental in challenging the stereotypes around what types of people brew and drink beer. Across Sheffield and beyond, we have a number of great brewsters to shout about whether it's Janine at Ashover Brewery, Hannah at Neepsend Brew Co, Claire at Welbeck Abbey or Martha at the newly opened Saint Mars of the Desert. Here at Sheffield Beer Week, we’re championing venues to get behind the Everyone Welcome Initiative (everyonewelcomeinitiative.com) to firmly stick our collective flag in the ground and shout proudly that 'hate isn’t to be tolerated and ignorance is not an excuse'.

Shakespeares Beer Week events Tuesday 12th March – Amundsen Brewery Showcase To kick off beer week we have a selection of kegs from Amundsen, one of Norway’s most exciting breweries. Beers will be on the bar from 5pm, including 4 different “Dessert in a can” beers, from their series of imperial stouts. This is a non-ticketed event. Wednesday 13th March – Battle of the Beers with Beer Central This year’s annual event with Sean from Beer Central sees Adam and Sean compete in 4 rounds, showcasing an IPA, sour, stout and a mystery beer. Sheffield beer week: barley wine

THE BIRTHPLACE OF BARLEY WINE Sheffield may not be synonymous with a beer style in the way that Pilsen or Burton are, but it was the birthplace of a type of beer: pale Barley Wine.

The first Barley Wines were very much forged in the image of the original Bass No. 1 Burton Ale. That is, a ridiculously high gravity – often North of 1100º - and a very dark brown colour. This was the template for Barley Wine, right from when Bass coined the term around 1870 until the early 1950s. When a new, much paler version was developed by Tennant Brothers at its Exchange Brewery in the centre of Sheffield. Tennant already brewed a Barley Wine in the classic style with No. 1 Barley Wine. Both were brewed to a super-high gravity, but there was a huge difference in the colour. The older Barley Wine had a colour of 145º on the old Lovibond scale, while Gold Label was just 35º, close to bitter in colour. The pale colour was achieved by restricting the recipe to just pale malt, No. 1 invert sugar and flaked maize. The older No.1 also contained black and crystal malt, plus a darker type of sugar.

Originally, Gold Label was brewed as a genuine stock ale, aged in oak casks for 12 months before bottling to round off any rough edges. This caught the attention of rival brewers and some brought out a similar beer of their own. Eldridge Pope, for example, had a beer called Goldie. A slightly modified version of that beer became the legendary Hardy Ale. Its popularity received a further boost when Tennant was bought by Whitbread in 1961. Whitbread had its own strong ale, Final Selection, but such was the renown of Gold Label that, unlike Tennant’s other bottled beers, it wasn’t discontinued. Quite the opposite, in fact, as Whitbread started brewing Gold Label in its Chiswell Street brewery in London. Throughout the 1970s, Whitbread pushed Gold Label quite heavily, with an advertising campaign which claimed “strong as a double scotch, less than half the price”. Sadly, the current version of Gold Label is just a shadow of its former self, a mere 7.5% ABV instead of 11%. If only someone would brew the original 1950s beer!

Sheffield beer week: lord mayor’s charitable fund

The Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund is an official charity partner of this year’s Sheffield Beer Week. Back in May 2018, Somali-born refugee Magid Magid became Sheffield’s youngest ever Lord Mayor. Magid has thrived in the position over the last year, publicly denouncing Donald Trump and banning him from the Steel City, appointing the city’s first Poet Laureate and speaking out against racism in British society. In his own words, he’s well and truly “brought the role of the Lord Mayor into the 21st century”. Part of the role is to champion and encourage the local independent and creative scenes, whether that’s opening indie food festivals in the city centre or becoming an official charity partner here at Sheffield Beer Week. The Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund is made up of three chosen charities: Flourish Sheffield, Sheffield Women’s Counselling and Therapy Service and Unity Gym Project.

Sheffield Flourish Flourish is a mental health charity in Sheffield made for and owned by the local community. The charity aims to help people who live with mental health difficulties and distress. After launching in 2016, the charity’s online community has grown to 1,000 monthly users. sheffieldflourish.co.uk serves an important purpose, helping people share their stories and breaking down mental health stigma with an open forum for honest, hopeful and inspiring stories from the people of Sheffield. sheffieldflourish.co.uk

Sheffield Women’s Counselling and Therapy Service The SWCTS offers a vitally important and free counselling service to women over the age of 16 in Sheffield who have experienced trauma or abuse in their lives. Since forming more than 20 years ago, SWCTS has been recognised for the quality and value of its services by a range of national funders including the Big Lottery Fund, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Ministry of Justice Victim’s Fund, Comic Relief and Lloyds TSB Foundation. swcts.org.uk

Unity Gym Project The UGP is charity based in Broomhall which has a keen focus on community development and the promotion of health and wellbeing. The charity works with young and vulnerable adults who often don’t wish to access mainstream services and helps them to make positive life choices and improve their wellbeing. After forming in 2010, Unity Gym Project has spent nearly a decade teaching and supporting the development of life skills for young people in the area. Sheffield beer week: people’s photography trail

The People’s Photography Trail returns to Sheffield Beer Week with the help of two hugely talented snappers in Mark Newton and Nicci Peet. Taking place across six of the city’s venues, this year’s People’s Photography Trail will have a broad focus on the diverse range of people working in the beer industry, as well as, of course, the beer lovers that craft the character of many of this city’s pubs. We’re thrilled to once again be working with Yorkshire photographer Mark Newton and, a new addition to the trail this year, Bristol-based snapper Nicci Peet. Both of whom will be producing this insightful photographymeets-beer trail for Sheffield Beer Week 2019. As Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garret Oliver says, “beer is people”, and to us at Sheffield Beer Week, it’s crucial to promote diversity within the beer industry from brewers, delivery drivers, barkeeps and beyond. This past year, Nicci Peet has been working on a project predominantly capturing women (cisgender, trans, genderqueer, women of colour) who work in the beer industry. “There’s a lot of talk and debate lately around sexism and inclusivity. Sheffield beer week: women in beer

Jane Peyton, award-winning writer, founder of School of Booze and author of ‘Drink: A Tippler’s Miscellany’ and ‘Beer o’ Clock’ making you think whilst you drink... I worship at the altar of Ninkasi and water + malt + hops + yeast = beer is my favourite mathematical equation. When I started writing about beer in 2008 I could count on one hand the number of women who were head brewers, never mind owning their own brewery. Sara Barton of Brewster’s was the pioneer and has been an inspiration to countless women in considering a career in something that females have been instrumental in since humans first drank beer. It still surprises many people to hear that women were the original brewers. In some parts of the world (the Amazon and rural African countries) where beer is made at home, the brewing is still performed by females and is seen as women’s work. That’s because beer is food and brewing is like cooking but with bigger vessels and more washing up! Compared to a decade ago women are now represented in all roles in UK brewing. Sara Barton is the current Institute of Brewing and Distilling Brewer of the Year and Jaega Wise of Wild Card Brewery was awarded the accolade of Brewer of the Year 2018 by the British Guild of Beer Writers. Sara Barton also received that award in 2012. Sophie de Ronde helms Burnt Mill and brews such impressive beers that the brewery won Rate Beer’s Best New Brewery within a year of opening. Sophie also instigated the annual International Collaboration Women’s Brew Day in March which is a global success. Even long-established breweries such as Fuller’s have a woman in charge of brewing with Georgina Young in that role. Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are flying the flag for women with Claire Monk at Welbeck Abbey Brewery and Janine Shorrock at Ashover Brewery respectively. As the saying goes, if you cannot see it, you cannot be it, so the increase in female brewers will inspire other women to brew beer too. I know of two pre-teen girls who are so inspired by their mother’s role as a professional brewer they want to do the same. What did it mean to you to win Brewer of the Year at the British Guild of Beer Writers Awards last year? Very surprising to be honest! I didn’t at all expect it. Overall I just feel super proud and very glad to be part of an industry I love so much. How did you get into the industry? By drinking a lot of beer! First and foremost I am a beer fan. I also happen to be a chemical engineer, which helps! I started brewing professionally in 2012, since then, the beer industry has changed an awful lot. It’s been pretty amazing to see how it has grown and developed. Where’s your happy place? In the pub! What have you got planned for Beer Week? We’re going to be pouring some Wild Card Brewery beers at Indie Beer Feast (8- 9 March) which we’re very excited about. Sheffield beer week: indie beer feast

Building on the success of 2018’s inaugural Indie Beer Feast, 2019’s instalment has expanded to two days with even more breweries joining us at the iconic Abbeydale Picture House on 8-9 March. In keeping with last year’s boutique and personal approach, the focus of Indie Beer Feast is still, as always, on superb independent craft breweries and tasty street food. Local breweries Abbeydale, Neepsend Brew Co, Thornbridge and new kid on the block Saint Mars of the Desert will be joined by London’s Orbit and Wild Card breweries, Manchester’s Cloudwater and Wander Beyond and Liverpool’s Neptune Brewery. There’s even a taste of New Zealand at IBF this year, with 8 Wired and Yeastie Boys from the New Zealand Beer

Collective in town to host a brewery bar, where attendees can chat to producers directly as they kick back and enjoy their beers in the unique and picturesque setting of the Abbeydale Picture House. Entertainment-wise, Just Do U Collective is curating a programme of acoustic and live performance sets throughout the festival and if the huge amount of brewery bars isn’t enough (see full list on the right), award-winning beer shop Hop Hideout will be on hand to provide a selection of curated bottles, canned craft beers (including a take home option), quality bottled cider and a few cheeky draught taps featuring international breweries. New for 2019 is the ‘Seasonal Celebration’ which will see a number of breweries launching brand new beers with a seasonal ingredient, meaning Indie Beer Feast festival goers will be the first to try these exclusive brews. Hi Jim! Having spent time in Manchester and Sheffield, has either city influenced your art work? Yeah definitely! At a young age I was deeply gutted to discover that shows like ‘The Hulk’ or ‘Nightrider’ weren’t shot in Sheffield and I think my art prints like ‘The Man Of Steel City’ or ‘Steel Finger’ were a way to bring the excitement of that world to Old Steely. I focused my Manchester work purely on the music scene, but it has some amazing back streets that are straight out of a comic-book or 70s New York movie. It’s important to take influence from your surroundings and I’ve got love for both towns! I’ll still take Pulp over Oasis though…

We caught up the artist behind Kelham Island Brewery’s quirky pumpclips, Jim Connolly, for a quick natter about his art, working with beer and, of course, his favourite tipple…

Glad to hear it! How did you get into illustration? I guess from a young age I always had a drive to draw things, as my little girl does now, and I was most drawn to animation and comic-books. I went on to study illustration at Manchester Met, the only other similar course of its kind was in Winchester and Manchester seemed like more of a party town and a lot easier to reach. Like Sheffield, it’s a big music-loving city which was a big factor too. When did you realise that you could pursue a career in art? I’d played in bands in Sheffield for years and had a sideline of gig poster and CD cover work which later evolved into art prints about the city. When a couple of those, about the Tinsley Towers destruction and Henderson’s Relish, made a splash I decided it was time to focus on what I loved the most. I wanted a comic ‘style’ I could call my own and to call my own shots. How did your work with Kelham Island Brewery come about? The brewery approached me in 2012 having seen my Sheffieldthemed work and offered me the chance to do a beer about the 40s sci-fi serial ‘King of the Rocketmen’. It sold out super-fast so they offered me the dream gig of creating six superheroes and villains for a special series of ales. It’s been a cool relationship to say the least! And you’re hosting an event there for Sheffield Beer Week… So on Saturday 9 March (at midday) I’ll be doing a talk about all my work for the brewery, showing off all my personal faves and explaining how I go about creating a pumpclip. Entry will be free as I understand it! Lastly, all-time favourite beer? Cask-wise, I loved Pale Rider long before I got the Kelham Island Brewery gig! I’m a Sheffield-based graphic designer and I run Great Good Creative, which brings branding and other design services to organisations with charitable or social aims.

One of the main talking points of this year’s event will be diversity and inclusion in the beer industry, how important is it to shine a light on this not just the beer industry, but perhaps with your own work and the creative industry in general? Could you tell us a bit about how you’re getting I worked on a digital art project not so long ago which involved with Sheffield Beer Week this year? celebrated black women and highlighted the lack of Sure! Sheffield beer week: beer writer of the year

Cities crave art. Maybe it’s because those of us who live within them can’t always see the greens, blues and butter-yellows that nature chooses to shower elsewhere. Or perhaps it’s because the stark beauty of our unforgotten industry inspires us to reach out and paint those greys alight. But whether we’re brushing oil onto canvas, spraypainting brick walls, or tattooing our own flesh, we’re somehow driven to bring forth colour. And that colour shines yet more vividly when it comes to beer. From the brewer’s palette of malt and hops to the label stretched across the cans we hold tight in our hands, art enters our city, then enters our bodies and leads us directly to a place where magic sometimes happens. But like all forms of art, a beer’s beauty goes beyond its physical appearance. It reaches from the made to the maker, the whole to its constituent parts, the meaning to the meant, and from the ending to the complete story.

Because art is about noticing. Noticing when the choices made by a brewer many weeks beforehand throw shadows forward through time. When she has trusted that the aroma will bloom, the bitterness will solidify, the malt sweetness will dance. When she has believed that the paint she has daubed will dry in precisely the way she imagined. Noticing where the foam sits on top of your pint, and the uneven line of bubbles that holds it in place. Watching it stick and slip as it moves down the glass, seeing where it laces and how it sometimes slides to nothing. Noticing the fragile spring sunshine fall through the window and push its way through a full glass of beer; seeing it cast a warm lozenge of amber light across the rough surface of the pub table. And noticing that everything has changed, from the beer in your glass to the images on the pump clips; finding nothing is static. Those who may have been ignored or dismissed are reclaiming beer as their own and, in this diverse new landscape, the whole aesthetic is altered. This is a different age and it hails a brand-new modernity. So, take some time to look around. Let the beer spill across your fingers as you lift the glass to your lips; steal its aromas, grasp the tingle of carbonation, and relish that bitter kick as it crosses the back of your tongue.
