Librarians at a branch in Lake County, Fla., went rogue to keep some books they favored from being tossed, the Huffington Post reported. page three Metro’s political game of cards THE DISTRICT The latest fight between supporters and opponents of Presidentelect Donald Trump found an unlikely battleground: Metro’s commemorative Inauguration Day farecards. After controvertsy erupted over the decision to use a nondescript design for the special one-day SmarTrip cards rather than a likeness of Trump, Metro decided to release a special commemorative card sleeve with an image of the president-elect. Metro debuted the sleeves — which feature Trump’s photo and the slogan “Make America Great Again” — on Friday. They will be distributed at stations the morning of the inauguration for free. It is hoped that the eleventhhour fix will appease critics who were upset when Metro released details of the special commemorative farecards late last month. The cards feature an image of the White House superimposed over a rippling American flag. There is no reference to Trump. That’s a departure from the

commemorative cards from the two previous inaugurations, both of which featured pictures of President Barack Obama on the front. Metro officials said they reached out to Trump’s campaign before the election for permission to use a photo on this year’s card, but received no response. Despite Metro’s defense, some people took the card design as a slight to the soon-to-be commander in chief. The story was shared on conservative websites,

and readers posted comments expressing outrage at Metro. Metro, responding to pressure from the public and at least one board member, came up with the sleeve, which was designed in conjunction with Trump’s inauguration team. “We’ve been working with them, and then basically we walked through some options with them, and then they chose the option they wanted to go for,” General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said. With the farecard controversy, Metro stepped into a minefield of high-stakes political protocol, attempting to avoid offending a famously thin-skinned celebrity and business mogul who will have a say in the agency’s funding and future during his presidency. “I kind of hope that the [incoming] president, and the other people who he delegates to, would have bigger issues to worry about,” said Sara Procacci Wilson, a former Metro chief of staff and communications director who was the agency’s “inauguration czar” for the 2009 event. But, she added, “I would have been a little bit more circumspect.” MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

New D.C. school chief left a budget shortfall Oakland, Calif., district needs to slash $25M after Wilson’s departure

Metro refuses medical clinic’s advertisement
RICKY CARIOTI (THE WASHINGTON POST)
THE DISTRICT W hen A ntwan Wilson was selected to lead D.C. Public Schools, Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Council members touted his success leading the Oakland Unified School District in California, including his ability to create “newfound financial stability.” But less than a month before Wilson starts his job in the District, the Oakland school system says Wilson has left it facing a significant projected budget shortfall for next year and that leaders are struggling to find a way to quickly reduce costs by at least $25 million. The projected shortfall is a result of declining enrollment coupled with an increase in costs for special education, nutrition and other programs, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle. The school system is operating at a $500,000 deficit this year, with a total budget of $405.3 million. During his confirmation process in D.C., Wilson cited as successes his negotiation of contracts with labor unions that provided “double-digit salary increases” and his boosting of early-childhood programs. Those and other commitments, as well as the decrease in enrollment, contributed

to the school system’s expected shortfall, according to Oakland school district financial reports to its Board of Education. Wilson said that the Oakland school system is not in the same kind of financial trouble that led it into a state bailout more than a decade ago, and he said the projected shortfall is part of the annual budget process; many of the nation’s school systems, in seeking full funding, report projected shortfalls to their local governments. He said the shortfall in Oakland will materialize only if the school system keeps all programs fully funded and makes no cuts. “That’s not what’s going to happen. That’s not what has happened any year I have been here,” Wilson said. “Every year that I have been at Oakland, Oakland
has balanced its budget.” Wilson called the union raises “extremely responsible,” because they are tied to an increase in state revenue. “No new revenue, no raise,” he said. Reports about the deficit have some officials in Oakland worried that Wilson is leaving behind costly programs without the proper funding mechanisms. In the District, some worry that the Oakland shortfall signals the potential for budgeting woes in Wilson’s administration in D.C. “It is concerning to me because fiscal management is a big part of the job,” said Cathy Reilly, executive director of the Senior High Alliance of Parents, Principals and Educators. “That this happened on his watch is something for us to watch carefully.” ALEJANDRA MATOS(THE WASHINGTON POST)
Officials at a D.C.-area medical clinic say Metro officials have blocked them from running ads in Metrorail stations because they run afoul of the transit agency’s ban on political advocacy. Melissa Grant, vice president of health-care services for Carafem Health Center, said the banners, which advertise the availability of prescription abortion, are not political. “All we are doing is trying to get the word out to potential clients,” Grant said. But Metro officials disagree. In an email response last month to Carafem officials, Donna M. Murray, manager of advertising and market development for Metro, wrote that “because your ad addresses the controversial topic of abortion and promotes a particular abortion product, it is issueoriented.” (TWP)

That includes 19,000 people with health insurance through the individual marketplace and 60,000 people insured through the small-business marketplace. Here is what Drs. Chaney’s patients are saying... “When I started my A1C was 12.5 - it was terrifying. The program to me was life changing. When I thought I was eating right they let me know that what I was eating was good for some people but it wasn’t good for me. I thank God for Dr. Steph and Dr. Tom Chaney because they turned my life around.”
“I am reporting to you three years after joining the program. I am 50 pounds lighter, I am happier, healthier and my A1C is no longer 13 but 5.4.” -Glennis G.
-Milton A.
“I can not tell you how great I feel. My energy is way up and my sleep is so much better. I am thrilled with Dr. Tom and Dr. Steph for helping me regain my personal health and reverse my diabetes.”
-Barry B.
“When I started this program my A1C was 8.9. My current A1C is 5.7. I was taking Metformin and two types of blood pressure medications. My blood sugars before the program were running in the 180’s. Now my blood sugars are running in the 110’s. After 2 months in the program my doctors stopped my Metformin that was phenomenal! I’ve also lost 25 pounds.”
“My first visit was very pleasant. My second visit is what changed my life. I have been a patient for 6 months. My A1C has gone from 6.6 to 5.7. I started out 70 pounds heavier. But coming to Living Health wasn’t about weight loss it was about type 2 diabetes. As you can see from my numbers that my type 2 diabetes has been reversed which is the intent of the program.”
“I came to this program because my A1C had drastically gone up to 9.2 and I was 215 pounds. Six months into the program my A1C dropped from 9.2 to 6.2 and my weight has dropped from 215 pounds to 195.”
“All I can say is it really works. I’ve been in the program for 5 months and I feel like a whole new woman. I’ve lost 40 pounds, I’m not on any diabetic medication anymore - that stopped pretty quick! My A1C went from 7.8 to 6.”
-Marissa M. My A1C was 8. Two months after that it was 6.4. As of a couple of days ago it is 5.9. I am ecstatic about that. I can only hope...I know, not hope, I know...that my blood sugars have come down, so the weight will come off. The blood pressure, I’ll be off of that medication. I have no doubt that I’ll be off of my diabetes medication and it’s all thanks to the Drs. Chaney and their facilities and I’m so happy”

Liquor commissioner quits PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY A Prince George’s County liquor commissioner accused of accepting bribes resigned from his post Friday, and Gov. Larry Hogan called for the reform of Maryland’s system of regulating alcohol sales, which he called “antiquated” and “without oversight.” Commissioner Anuj Sud was one of four people charged Thursday in a federal corruption
investigation. The others were two business owners and the administrator of the liquor board. Sud, 39, is accused of taking money from a lawyer representing restaurants and liquor stores with business before the Prince George’s Board of License Commissioners. In court filings, law enforcement authorities indicated that they expect to charge more people in connection with the case, including a former elected official and a state lawmaker, whose names have not been released. Liquor board members are
appointed by the governor. They wield significant regulatory power over about 600 business outlets in the county — authorizing alcohol sales, imposing fines for infractions and suspending or revoking licenses in response to serious violations. Sud’s resignation Friday follows the December resignation of the liquor board chairman, Charles Caldwell, who was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving while leaving the grand opening of the MGM National Harbor casino. Officials in Beijing announced a new environmental police squad to root out illegal burning in the city. Beijing’s acting mayor, Cai Qi, said Saturday that the force would target open-air barbecues, garbage incineration and the burning of wood and other biomass, according to China’s official Xinhua News Agency. Cai announced several other measures, including a target of cutting the use of coal by 30 percent in 2017, shutting down 500 higher-polluting factories and upgrading 2,500 more. About 300,000 high-polluting vehicles will also be restricted from entering the capital starting next month, he said.
Air China announced late Friday that it will become the first airline in mainland China to ban shark fin cargo, throwing a lifeline to shark populations threatened with imminent extinction. “Scientists estimate that fins from up to 73 million sharks a year are used for shark’s fin soup, with much of the trade in shark fin destined for China,” said Alex Hofford, a wildlife activist from conservation group WildAid in Hong Kong, who applauded Air China for taking “an ethical stance” to help protect sharks and oceans. “It’s a bold move and this is likely to have a huge and lasting impact on shark populations and marine ecosystems worldwide.”
On Dec. 30, China promised to halt its domestic ivory trade completely by the end of 2017, a decision greeted by environmentalists as offering real hope for an end to a poaching crisis that is wiping out tens of thousands of elephants across Africa. “China’s announcement is a game changer for elephant conservation,” Carter Roberts, president of the World Wildlife Fund, said in a statement. “The large-scale trade of ivory now faces its twilight years, and the future is brighter for wild elephants.” China said it would begin phasing out the ivory trade in March and cease processing and trading completely by Dec. 31, 2017.
As climate change denier Donald Trump is about to take office in the United States, China is preparing to become the leader in the fast-growing renewable energy industry. China’s National Energy Administration said Thursday that it plans to spend more than $360 billion through 2020 on renewable sources like solar and wind, according to The New York Times. In addition to the environmental benefits of investing in renewables, the move will create 13 million jobs, the agency says. China is the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gasses, discharging nearly twice as much as the U.S.

Palestinian kills 4 Israeli soldiers in truck attack JERUSALEM A Palestinian truck driver on Sunday rammed his vehicle into a crowd of Israeli soldiers at a popular Jerusalem tourist spot, killing four people and wounding 17 others in the deadliest single attack in more than a year of Israeli-Palestinian violence. The attack came at a time of heightened tensions in Jerusalem, where Palestinians have warned of dire consequences if incoming President Donald Trump follows through on his promise to move the U.S. Embassy to the city. The atmosphere among Israelis is also charged, following last week’s manslaughter conviction of an Israeli soldier who fatally shot a wounded Palestinian attacker. Visiting the attack site, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there was strong evidence the attacker was a supporter of the Islamic State group and suggested a link to previous vehicle attacks in Europe. “We know that there is a sequence of terror attacks. There definitely could be a connection between them, from France to Berlin and now Jerusalem,” he said. Netanyahu offered no evidence to support the claim. While Israel has arrested several Palestinians who allegedly traveled to Syria to join ISIS, the group is not known to have any serious presence in Israel or the Palestinian areas. Braced for a backlash LGBT leaders prepare for Republican efforts to roll back gains made in recent years
Trump Jr. aiming to help ease law on gun silencers
but a federal appeals court has blocked it from taking effect. Texas is likely to be a highprofile battleground this year. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a key player in setting the legislative agenda, is backing a North Carolina-style bill that would ban transgender people from using public bathrooms of their choice. A statewide business coalition pointed out that Texas could lose billions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs if it pursues the legislation. Such intervention by the business community is viewed by LGBT activists as vital now that chances for gains at the legislative level have diminished. “Even in the face of relentless attempts to undermine equality, America’s leading companies and law firms remain steadfast,” said Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBT-rights group.
POLITICS The federal government has strictly limited the sale of firearm silencers for as long as James Bond and big-screen gangsters have used them to discreetly shoot enemies between the eyes. Now, the gun industry is pursuing new legislation to make silencers easier to buy, and a key backer is Donald Trump Jr. Supporters hope to position the bill as a public-health effort to safeguard the eardrums of the nation’s 55 million gun owners. It’s called the Hearing Protection Act. It would halt the inclusion of silencers in the same category as machine guns and grenades, eliminating a $200 tax and a nine-month approval process. “It’s a health issue, frankly,” Trump Jr. said in a September video interview with the founder of SilencerCo, a Utah silencer manufacturer. Even with the restrictions, silencers have become one of the fastest-growing segments of the gun industry. In 2010, there were 285,087 registered silencers. Last year: 902,085. Violence-prevention advocates argue that the legislation will make it easier for criminals and potential mass shooters to obtain devices to conceal attacks. The silencer industry and gun rights groups cite studies showing that silencers reduce the sound of a gunshot only to the level of a jackhammer — and that they are rarely used in crimes. MICHAEL S. proposed act “would open the door to unprecedented taxpayerfunded discrimination, allowing anyone to act with impunity in rejecting same-sex couples.” The act’s lead Senate sponsor, Republican Mike Lee of Utah, denies that the measure gives a green light to discrimination. “It will protect individuals, regardless of their beliefs about marriage, from being deprived of eligibility for federal grants, licenses and employment because of their deeply held convictions,” Lee says. It’s unclear how many of the state measures seeking to curtail LGBT rights will be enacted. One state with such a law in effect — North Carolina — has suffered a backlash that included cancellation of planned business and sports activities in the state. Business coalitions have formed in several other states — including Texas, Mississippi and Tennessee — to oppose enactment of

CULTURE After a string of major victories in recent years, LGBT activists are bracing for a different task in 2017 — trying to prevent Republicans in Congress and state legislatures from undermining those gains. They view President-elect Donald Trump and many of his Cabinet selections as disinterested — and in some cases hostile — when it comes to the various issues of civil rights and antidiscrimination protections that concern lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. At the state level, with Republicans controlling a sizable majority of legislatures, there’s already a push for measures that LGBT activists view as discriminatory. For example, legislators in several states — including Alabama, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin — are advocating for laws that would bar transgender students from using bathrooms or locker rooms that don’t match their biological gender at birth. There also may be a push in some states for so-called “religious exemption” laws that would allow some businesses and civil servants to refuse services to LGBT people if their decisions were deemed to be based on religious belief. In Congress, conservative Republicans plan to address the religious-exemption issue by relaunching the First Amendment Defense Act, which would prohibit punitive federal action against people and institutions that define marriage as a union of one man and one woman. Trump has said he would sign it if it reaches his desk. Ian Thompson, a legislative specialist with the American Civil Liberties Union, says the

A day before the suspect in the Fort Lauderdale airport rampage was to appear in court, a website released footage that appears to show him calmly drawing a pistol and opening fire in the airport. The video posted on TMZ’s website appears to show Estaban Santiago walking through baggage claim area of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday, pulling a handgun from his waistband and then firing several times before running. Santiago, 26, is accused of killing five travelers and wounding six others in the attack. He was charged Saturday with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death — which carries a maximum punishment of execution — and weapons charges. His first court hearing is today. The FBI said in an email that it was aware of the video but would not comment on its authenticity. TMZ did not say where it obtained the video. Santiago told investigators that he planned the attack, buying a one-way ticket to the Fort Lauderdale airport, a federal complaint said. Authorities don’t know why he chose his target. They have

FBI Agent George Piro said Santiago spoke to investigators for several hours. “Indications are that he came here to carry out this horrific attack,” Piro said. “We have not identified any triggers that would have caused this attack.” Bryan Santiago said Saturday that his brother had requested psychological help but received little assistance. Killer whales end their show in San Diego SeaWorld San Diego is ending its long-running killer whale show after years of outcry and falling attendance. The show that featured killer whales cavorting with trainers and leaping out of the Shamu Stadium pool had its final performances Sunday. This summer, the park will unveil a new attraction in the revamped pool — Orca Encounter — which is being billed as an educational experience that will show how killer whales eat, communicate and navigate. Parks in Orlando, Fla., and San Antonio will end their shows by 2019. The end of the killer whale show was first announced last year. SeaWorld has seen attendance fall since the 2013 documentary “Blackfish” criticized the conditions of captive orcas. Tilikum, the orca who killed a SeaWorld trainer in 2010 and was the subject of the documentary, died Friday. He was believed to be about 36 years old. (AP)

At least 48 people were killed and about 100 injured Saturday in the Syrian border town of Azaz when a truck bomb ripped through a marketplace. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said six of the dead were rebel fighters, and the rest civilians. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which came amid a stuttering nationwide cease-fire. Situated along the Turkish border north of Aleppo, Azaz was held by Islamic State militants for six months in 2013. The group has been blamed for several attacks in the area since it was pushed out by a rebel offensive. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Thirty-one prison inmates were slain Friday in northern Brazil — some of them disemboweled — during a killing spree led by the country’s largest gang, officials said. The bloodshed came days after 60 inmates died in rioting at two prisons in a neighboring state and increased fears that violence could spread, including to the streets of major cities, as gangs vie for influence both inside prisons and in slums where trafficking operations are often based. It has become a flashpoint for President Michel Temer, whose administration also faces an economic crisis and allegations of corruption. (AP)
Prosecutors in Mexico said Sunday that officers caught a gunman who on Friday shot an official of the U.S. Consulate in the western city of Guadalajara in Jalisco state. Attacks on diplomats are federal crimes in Mexico. The U.S. Embassy has not identified the official, who was shot in his car and was in stable condition. The FBI had offered $20,000 for information on the attacker. Jalisco is dominated by the hyper-violent Jalisco New Generation cartel. There was no immediate evidence of a cartel link to the attack. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City urged Americans to limit their movements in Guadalajara. (AP)

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, left, told Nick Saban last year to expect to see the Tigers again.
3 THINGS TO WATCH

Crimson nightmare
CLEMSON (13-1) VS. ALABAMA (14-0) | 8 TONIGHT, ESPN
Tigers’ window closing Forthcoming exodus of talent makes Clemson’s title aspirations even more pressing COLLEGE FOOTBALL Clemson coach Dabo Swinney still has a picture on his phone from that night. A couple of months after the Tigers lost last year’s national championship game to Alabama, Swinney and Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban were on the same dinner cruise near Boca Grande in southwest Florida. Swinney approached Saban early in the trip and handed him a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant in the vacation destination. On the back was a message: “See you in Tampa next year.” Ten months later, they’re preparing to play for the national title there tonight. Saban and the Tide (14-0) have advanced to five of the past eight
title games, beating Swinney and the Tigers 45-40 in Glendale, Ariz., last season thanks partly to two blown coverages against tight end O.J. Howard (208 yards, two touchdowns) and a 95-yard kickoff return. Clemson is back for another shot, but tonight might be its best — and maybe last — chance for a while to add to its lone national title (1981). The window is closing on Swinney’s talented team. Sure, Clemson has recruited as well as anyone in the country in recent years and has all the resources and facilities to stay a yearly threat. But the Tigers (13-1) are losing just about everyone. Deshaun Watson, who in 2015

became the first player in FBS history to top 1,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards passing in a season, is turning pro after graduating in three years. Running back Wayne Gallman, who set the school’s singleseason rushing record (1,527
yards) in 2015, and wide receivers Mike Williams and Artavis Scott will join Watson in the NFL. Williams is widely expected to be the first receiver drafted in April. And Scott is Clemson’s career leader in catches (242). Throw in tight end Jordan Leggett and center Jay Guillermo, and Clemson will have to replace a big chunk of its highscoring offense. On the other side of the ball, cornerback Cordrea Tankersley, safety Jadar Johnson, linebacker Ben Boulware and defensive end Carlos Watkins all will be gone. That’s the team’s top two defensive backs, who have combined for nine interceptions this season, and its leaders in tackles and sacks. MARK LONG (AP)
With four national titles in the Nick Saban era and an undefeated run through the SEC this year, it’s hard to picture Alabama losing tonight. Here are three things Clemson can do to pull off the upset. (AP)
3 Take care of the ball Tigers QB Deshaun Watson is mobile and confident, which is partly why he’s thrown 17 picks this year. If he’s reckless, Watson could give Alabama its 13th defensive touchdown.
2 Win outside At 6-feet-3 and 225 pounds, Clemson’s Mike Williams is an imposing wideout. Alabama corner Marlon Humphrey (6-1, 196) is big, too, but has struggled in deep coverage.
1 “Bear” down Clemson uses five-man “Bear” fronts to get one-onone looks for its D-linemen, and tackles Carlos Watkins and Dexter Lawrence have combined for 17.5 sacks.
BACKBONE OF A DYNASTY
Alabama upholds rich tradition on defense
Entering tonight, Alabama has the nation’s stingiest defense in scoring (11.4 points per game) and total yards allowed (244.0). Since 2008, it has led the country in each category three times. Under coach Nick Saban, nine of Alabama’s defensive players have been first-round picks in the NFL draft. This year, lineman Jonathan Allen, left, corner Marlon Humphrey and linebackers Reuben Foster and Tim Williams are projected as possible first-rounders. STEELERS 30, DOLPHINS 12 The notion that Pittsburgh is the primary threat to the topseeded Patriots in the AFC playoffs was reinforced quickly and emphatically Sunday at frigid Heinz Field. The Steelers’ offense struck early and often, and their defense never let the Dolphins, led by fillin quarterback Matt Moore, do much of anything in a stress-free 30-12 victory. Pittsburgh advanced to an AFC semifinal Sunday in Kansas City against the second-seededChiefs. The winner of that game would play the AFC championship game at New England, assuming the Patriots can beat the visiting Texans this weekend. On Sunday, the Steelers’ imposing trio of Ben Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown was too much for the Dolphins to handle. On Pittsburgh’s first two possessions, Brown turned two short passes into touchdowns of 50 and 62 yards as part of a five-catch, 124-yard receiving performance. Bell ran 29 times and scored twice while setting

Tailback Jay Ajayi was held to 33 yards rushing. Moore, starting in place of the injured Ryan Tannehill, lost two fumbles, threw an interception and was briefly knocked out of the game

Rodgers retains form with four TDs in rout Rodgers was 25-of-40 for 362 yards, continuing a remarkable run of play that helped the Packers win their final six games of the regular season to take the NFC North. Cobb finished with five receptions for 116 yards and three scores. The Giants built a 6-0 lead on two field goals by Robbie Gould, but the Packers scored twice in the final 2:20 of the first half. PACKERS 38, GIANTS 13 Aaron Rodgers, master of the Hail Mary pass, struck again in another critical moment. Rodgers overcame a sluggish start to finish with four touchdown passes, including a momentumswinging 42-yard heave to Randall Cobb at the end of the second quarter, to lead the Packers to a 38-13 home win over the Giants. WIZARDS 107, BUCKS 101 For several weeks, Wizards forward Kelly Oubre Jr. had played through a post-concussion fog. The headaches had long since passed, but his game appeared to be stuck in a daze. On Sunday in Milwaukee, Oubre shook off the fog and returned to an energetic role off the bench to help the Wizards beat the Bucks 107-101. Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 26 points while Markieff Morris finished with 20 and 10 rebounds. And yet, the spark of life from Oubre proved to be just as vital as Washington (18-18) won its eighth game after trailing by double figures. Oubre played 25 minutes and picked up four fouls but scored 17 points, the most since his concussion Dec. 16. He stepped up during the Wizards’ 15-4 separating run in the third quarter. Playing in place of Morris as part of a small-ball lineup. Oubre hit four of five shots, including two 3-pointers, and pulled down two rebounds in the period. The Wizards finally looked engaged on defense as the starters finished the final six minutes of the game, holding off a Bucks team missing budding star Giannis Antetokounmpo (llness), who sat out his first game of the season. With 39.3 seconds remaining and the Wizards leading by three, Morris sealed the victory with a layup off a pass from Otto Porter Jr. CANDACE BUCKNER (TWP)

The right coach can get you off the sidelines Finding a career coach could be the best way to energize a job search CAREER SUPPORT Bayonia Marshall was getting a paycheck, but she lacked any kind of passion for her job. The only thing keeping her in the position was her salary, so she knew she needed some guidance. She met D.C.-based career coach Bianca Jackson at a women’s empowerment conference and began working with her on a career plan. Together, the two have discussed everything from Marshall’s skills to her cover letter. Marshall, 23, is currently unemployed but on the hunt for a marketing and PR position. She feels confident that her sessions with Jackson will lead to a role
that makes her feel ambitious, not ambivalent. “She’s helping me get a job that I really want, instead of just settling for something,” Marshall says. Investing in sessions with a career coach can result in the kind of professional fulfillment Marshall and plenty of others dream about. The key is finding a coach whose expertise and techniques match with your objectives and learning style. When Irnande Altema, a firstgeneration American and law school graduate, was having difficulty landing a position in government, she sought out a coach whose background aligned with her goals. “I spoke to a few career coaches who were not attorneys or who did not work in government affairs, and I did not think they would be a good match for me,” she says. Instead, she

found a coach who was a woman of color and had worked in law and government. Once Altema, 31, secured a job with a Maryland state senator, her coach worked with her to improve her networking and communication skills to help her shine in her current position and
keep working her way up the government ladder. “She pushed me and definitely made me think a lot,” Altema says. “We ended our sessions after six months or so, but I have continued to apply the information long after our agreement ended.” Whether you have a specific career path in mind or are at more of a crossroads, a coach can help you gain perspective and determine the next steps. “A lot of people don’t know how to find something that matches with their background, interests and personality,” says Jackson, who works exclusively with women. “Working with a coach can help bundle all of it together to find the job best suited for that individual.” A coach can also prove beneficial even if you’re happy in CONTINUES ON PAGE 16
More than 100,000 students have applied to enter UCLA this fall, making the prestigious public university in Southern California the first in the country to report a six-figure total for freshman applications. University of California officials said 102,177 students are seeking a spot in the Class of 2021 on the Westwood campus in Los Angeles, up 5 percent from last year. The target size for the entering class is about 6,500. Those figures don’t include tens of thousands of expected transfer applicants. Despite the huge volume of applications, UCLA officials say each one will be read at least twice and considered “holistically” before the school makes admission decisions. The admission rate for the most recent incoming class was 18 percent. Readings will continue through March 1, and decisions are to be announced by April 1. NICK ANDERSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

your role and already on the right track. They can help with career advancement and with increasing your earning potential, says Alexandria-based Lisa Lewis, who works primarily with 20- and 30-somethings through her company So Much More Coaching. “Or they can set you up with productive mental models and problem-solving tools to navigate every challenge coming your way,” she says. Those challenges could be internal (like a self-confidence problem) or external (like a difficult co-worker). Coaching sessions — which can take place over the phone, via Skype or in person — typically involve lots of open-ended
questions that get the client thinking. “The science behind coaching is that if you give someone an answer, it’s very unlikely that they’re going to follow through on it,” says Vik Kapoor, who focuses on millennials at his D.C.-based Extra-M Coaching & Consulting practice. But asking powerful questions that get clients to come up with their own answers, he says, greatly increases their chances of success. Expect to work with a coach anywhere from a month to six months, and be prepared for the investment of time and money required. Jackson, for example, charges $2,997 for a three-month program, while Kapoor charges $5,000 for five months of unlimited coaching. But all the coaching in the
world won’t accomplish a thing if you’re not willing to do the work involved. “I try to always be upfront with my clients that they’re going to have to do homework,” Lewis says. “I think that just as many breakthroughs happen while doing the homework as happen in our conversations.” For Chad Ryerson, 34, a training manager in the federal government, his coaching sessions with Kapoor keep him on a path of constant growth and improvement. “If you’re going to invest in anyone in this world, you’ve got to invest in yourself first,” he says. “I come from a background in international development, and you can’t help other people until you help yourself. Once you stabilize yourself, you’re much more efficient and effective.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR EXPRESS)

Thanks to her, you can walk through history Name: Hana Kim, 36 Position: Exhibition designer, National Museum of American History
What she does Every one of the 3 million objects at the National Museum of American History tells a story, and it’s exhibition designer Hana Kim’s job to give them a voice. Right now, Kim is working on reinstalling the Greensboro lunch counter in a newly renovated part of the museum, and she came up with the idea of adding a “magic mirror” behind the counter. At first, the mirror will act like a regular mirror, and allow visitors to see themselves next to the artifact. Then, it will transform into a semi-reflective movie screen, where you’ll see
yourself alongside the civil rights protesters who refused to move from their seats at a segregated Woolworth lunch counter. How the screen will operate hasn’t yet been decided — it will probably involve two-way mirrors and a large LCD screen — but Kim is determined to make it work. Her goal? To help people see themselves as a part of the United States’ ongoing history. “I’ve always gravitated to the storytelling aspect of exhibit design, and making these immersive environments where you actually learn something as you are going through them,” she says.
How she got the job In 2008, in the middle of the global financial crisis, Kim
graduated with a master’s degree in architecture. “No one was building anything, so there weren’t very many architecture jobs,” she recalls. That drove her to freelance, taking on a variety of gigs, including landscape architecture, urban planning and designing small museum exhibits. “In some ways, the recession had a silver lining because it opened up avenues for me that maybe I wouldn’t have explored otherwise,” she says. Kim discovered that exhibit design allowed her to combine her interests in fine arts and history, so she got a full-time exhibit design job at D.C.’s Howard + Revis Design in 2011, where her clients included the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, CONTINUES ON PAGE 18

If you’re artistic and practical at the same time, this is a good job for you. Exhibition designers see projects through from beginning to end, working with large, multidisciplinary teams to figure out the best way to tell complicated and nuanced stories. You have to be willing to rethink your vision in the face of obstacles, such as fragile objects that can’t have too much light hit them. “You have to be loose and willing to go with the different directions a project may sometimes take you in,” she says. “If you want to have complete creative control, this job isn’t going to work for you.”
How you can get the job A broad liberal arts education is a good start, because working at a museum requires knowledge of a range of topics, including history, anthropology, science and the arts, Kim says. You’ll want to major — or at least to take classes — in architecture,
industrial design or graphic design, and become adept at using the Adobe Creative Cloud and AutoCAD software, which allows you to design 3-D objects. It also helps to be able to freehand sketch, she says. A master’s degree in architecture or museum exhibit design isn’t strictly necessary, but it can be helpful in today’s tough job market, Kim says. The most important thing is your portfolio showing your past work, so try to land a good internship. At the NMAH, for example, interns see their own exhibit designs to completion by working with teams of about a dozen curators, designers and other staff. You also may want to join a professional association like the American Alliance of Museums or their sub-network, the National Association for Museum Exhibition. People come to museum exhibition design in a lot of different ways, Kim says, but one thing they all have in common are creative minds and the hard skills needed to make your team’s vision a reality. “You have to know how to synthesize information very quickly. It’s not enough to know how to build a 3-D space. You have to understand the content and tell a story through it,” she says. SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

About the boys: Men will steal our screens in 2017 The new shows of 2017 are crazy about offbeat men, mysterious men, evil men, men who aren’t who you think they are. Let’s take a look at this gallery of bros. For starters, there’s Pope Pius XIII of “The Young Pope” (HBO, premieres 9 p.m. Sunday). Brit heartthrob Jude Law is Lenny Belardo, an American orphan improbably elected pontiff. He’s definitely not your typical holy man — his sole breakfast food is Cherry Coke Zero.
And he dreams of endorsing masturbation, gay marriage and nuns leading Mass. As the nun who raised him, Diane Keaton urges him to do the right thing, although really, the only thing you can think when you see her is: Diane Keaton … is … a … nun? Another British actor of note, Tom Hardy, plays antihero (or is it sympathetic villain?) James Keziah Delaney in “Taboo” (FX, premieres 10 p.m. Tuesday), a series he co-created. Delaney, a “rogue adventurer,” was thought to be dead in Africa, only now he’s back in foggy 1814 London
$22M
and is heir to his dead dad’s shipping empire. He intensely vows to do “very, very foolish things.” Perhaps it’s not surprising that everyone wants to kill him. Count Olaf is truly TV’s nastiest man. His sole goal is to terrorize the darling Baudelaire orphans so he can steal their fortune. That’s the plot in “A Series of Unfortunate Events” (Netflix, begins streaming Friday), based on books that also inspired a movie. As Olaf, an uglied-up Neil Patrick Harris chomps on so much scenery he surely needs dental implants. Also popping up is Lemony Snicket, the pseudonymous author of the books. He warns that the show is “extremely unpleasant.” But it’s also very witty and highly entertaining. Perky comic book teen Archie Andrews gets a brooding makeover on “Riverdale” (The CW, premieres 9 p.m. Jan. 26). TV Archie (K.J. Apa) jogs
shirtless and ponders the murder of a kid from Riverdale, whose corpse has “the touch of evil.” Goofy sidekick Jughead — who in his comic book incarnation famously downed 12 pizzas in a single sitting — has reinvented himself as “a heartthrob with a philosophical bent and former best friend of Archie Andrews,” showrunners say. Then there’s Jeff of the animated “Jeff & Some Aliens” (Comedy Central, premieres 10:30 p.m. Wednesday), spun off from the network’s “TripTank” sketch series. Jeff is a slovenly slacker who lives with three extraterrestrials (who tongueprobe him). In the premiere, he must kill an earthling to atone for accidentally killing an alien on the planet Azuria. Well, at least he’s not a Cherry Coke Zero addict.
Friday on Amazon
Created by Bryan Cranston, the show stars Giovanni Ribisi as a con man who, in an attempt to leave his old life behind, takes on the identity of his prison cellmate. Margo Martindale, Marin Ireland and Peter Gerety also star.
2 ‘The 44th President: In His Own Words’ 9 p.m. Sunday on the History Channel
In interviews conducted before and after the 2016 election, President Obama speaks about his tenure and what the Trump presidency could mean to his legacy.
3 ‘Victoria’ 9 p.m. Sunday on PBS
Part of PBS’ “Masterpiece” showcase, this new British period drama series stars Jenna Coleman as the celebrated queen of England. It follows her through her first three years on the throne, starting at age 18. (EXPRESS)

BOX OFFICE HAUL
The box office take of “Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story” this past weekend, seizing the top spot for its fourth straight week. The intergalactic adventure edged out the NASA drama “Hidden Figures,” which made $21.8 million after expanding to more than 2,000 additional theaters Friday after an earlier opening in limited release. Animated musical “Sing” came in third, taking in $19.5 million. “Underworld: Blood Wars” debuted in fourth with $13.1 million, followed by “La La Land” with $10 million. (AP) “No Plan,” four-song EP of David Bowie’s last recordings, released Sunday to mark what would have been his 70th birthday

Netflix’s remake shows just how relevant the TV genre can be today STREAMING Well, they only had to remake a jillion TV shows from yesteryear to finally get one exactly, perfectly right. Not only is Netflix’s reimagined “One Day at a Time” a joy to watch, it’s also the first time in many years that a multicamera sitcom (the kind filmed on a set with studioaudience laughter) has seemed so instinctively comfortable in its own skin. This “One Day at a Time” — which debuted Friday with a 13-episode season — is much more than another nostalgia trip, yet it’s worth noting how much of
the original story has traveled the decades intact. The premise is still about a recently separated working mom with two kids — only this time, the lead character is a 38-year-old Cuban-American nurse and Afghanistan war vet named Penelope Alvarez (Justina Machado). Penelope left her husband, who is also a veteran, because of his issues with drug and alcohol addiction and his unwillingness to seek counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder. As it was long ago, “One Day at a Time” leans heavily on Norman Lear — the sitcom genius who counts the original show among his many successes — and his knack for fearlessly blending controversial topicality with comedy, with a challenging additional layer of identity politics. The Romanos
of the original show and the Alvarezes share a propensity for letting it all hang out — raised voices, slamming doors, a range of hurt feelings. They argue about the existence of God and going to Mass. They debate immigration. By the second episode, those who faithfully watched the original and absorbed its strident stances on equality and personal independence can feel the same sense of investment now. For years, critics lamented the disappearance of the way Lear and his collaborators gave their sitcoms an edgy point of view. They certainly had that, but what they were also good at was inviting a viewer in, no matter who you were, and making you feel at home. This show feels like home.

Great news for capes and spandex suits The CW network says it has already renewed seven of its series for another season in the fall, including all four of its DC Comics superhero shows: “Supergirl,” “Arrow,” “The Flash” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.” “Supernatural” will be back for Season 13. Critical favorites “Jane the Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” will also return. (AP) Alexis Bledel: The possibility of more “Gilmore Girls” episodes “hasn’t been a conversation as of yet”

“It’ll probably never happen, but Clinton as mayor of NYC and Trump as the prez based in NYC would be ridiculous.” @FORECASTERENTEN tweets about speculation that Hillary Clinton is considering running for mayor of New York City. The New York Daily News reported late last week that a source said she is considering it, but it seems very unlikely. That hasn’t stopped people from dreaming of Clinton as the mayor of Donald Trump’s home city. The New York Post even ran an editorial on the subject, urging Clinton to run. “While it’s not the glass ceiling she hoped to break, New York has never had a woman mayor,” the editorial reads.
@RYLLIEDANYLKO on pharma-bro Martin Shkreli’s Twitter provocation toward Teen Vogue reporter Lauren Duca, known for her recent piece on Trump gaslighting America. After Duca mockingly turned down Shkreli’s invitation to be his plus one for the inauguration, Shkreli harassed Duca, photoshopping a series of pictures of her into his Twitter profile. His account was suspended Sunday.

A mic drop heard around the planet The ashes of Carrie Fisher, who was laid to rest Friday alongside her mother, Debbie Reynolds, were placed in a porcelain urn in the shape of an outsized antidepressant. “Carrie’s favorite possession was a giant Prozac pill that she bought many years ago,” her brother Todd Fisher said Friday as he left the private joint funeral for his mother and sister. “She loved it, and it was in her house, and Billie [Lourd, Fisher’s daughter] and I felt it was where she’d want to be.” Fisher was adored for her gallows humor and frank talk about her struggles with mental illness.
