TRANSPORTATION After four long, hot years, Metro riders passing through the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations will find their commutes just a bit cooler thanks to a repaired chiller system. Metro announced over the weekend that the long-broken system, which pumps chilled air into stations and across station platforms to reduce temperatures, had been fixed. Metro stations are not air-conditioned, but the chiller systems can reduce the temperature by about six degrees. Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly confirmed the system was fully operational Wednesday — when temperatures topped 90 degrees. Some riders who regularly use the two stations said they didn’t notice a change in temperature until asked about it while heading home from work or school Tuesday. “Huh, it’s on?” asked Fahad

Steve Agoussi, a 52-year-old accountant who has traveled the same route to work through Dupont Circle for roughly two decades, said he “didn’t feel it — but as you’re talking about it, sure.” Kristen Reussi, meanwhile, said she thought Metro had simply added a few extra fans. Reussi, 50, who works as a nursery school teacher, stopped coming to Dupont Circle about

four years ago, partly because of the heat, she said. She shuddered at the memory of temperatures that “felt like hell down there.” A job change last month forced Reussi to start using the station again. Cheverly, Md., asks: What’s that smell? A new, strange odor is assaulting the noses of the residents of Cheverly, Md., a town in Prince George’s County. Officials said in a statement on the town’s website Wednesday that odors have caused residents to wake up from a deep sleep, gag, and experience a burning feeling in the back of the throat. It’s not clear where the stench is coming from. Officials said they are working to identify the source and have reported the conditions to the Maryland Department of the Environment. (TWP)

D.C. will raze RFK Stadium Officials say they have no plans in the works to add a football arena

THE DISTRICT The District plans to tear down the dilapidated RFK stadium by 2021, a move officials say is driven by a need to save money and not to advance any plans for a new football stadium there. The decision announced Thursday will end the life of the 58-year-old stadium best known for hosting the Redskins during the team’s glory years in the 1980s and early 1990s when it won three Super Bowls. RFK, located on the Anacostia River two miles east of the U.S. Capitol, also was home for a time to both the Nationals and Senators baseball teams, as well as the D.C. United soccer team. It also hosted concerts, including performances by The Beatles, Madonna and Foo Fighters. Events DC, the District agency that manages the stadium, is seeking bids by Oct. 25 from contractors to demolish the facility. Since D.C. United left in 2017, RFK has attracted few events and is costing the city $2 million a year for maintenance, landscaping, pest control, security and other services. Utility bills add another $1.5 million a year. “We don’t want to throw money after a resource that’s exceeded its useful life,” Events DC President Gregory O’Dell said. The demolition also will make it easier for the District to move

He and other officials pushed back against speculation that the city was paving a path for the Redskins to replace it with a new stadium. John Falcicchio, chief of staff to Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, said D.C. has had “no substantive conversations” in 13 months with the team about a stadium. Both Bowser and team owner Daniel Snyder have expressed hope that the team might return to D.C., which it left in 1996 to play at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. Snyder would like to recreate the electric atmosphere at RFK, where 47,000 fans famously

stomped feet so hard that the stadium shivered. Bowser would like the team to anchor a complex with retail, restaurants and affordable housing. But D.C. would first need to get control of the land, which it leases from the federal government. At present, the lease allows the site to be used only for sports and recreation. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D, the city’s nonvoting member of Congress, has filed a bill to sell the entire 190-acre RFK site to D.C., but the bill has not progressed. A return by the Redskins would be controversial; some members of Congress and the D.C. Council object to the team’s name, while others are

concerned by the prospect of tax dollars helping fund the project. O’Dell said a new professional football stadium was one of three possible long term uses — along with an indoor sports arena or green space — but the city is not looking at those alternatives. “We are not working on any of those long-term options right now, nor have we talked to the Redskins about that or any of this demolition effort,” O’Dell said. The agency has not yet decided whether it will auction off seats or other parts of the stadium. “At an appropriate time, we’re going to celebrate this building and honor its legacy,” O’Dell said. D.C. mayor signs order urging city to prioritize Wards 7 and 8 for city agencies’ office space

THE DISTRICT D.C. public safety agencies this week will adopt policies to ensure that life-threatening building code violations are promptly addressed, an effort to prevent the missteps that preceded a deadly fire last month, officials said Wednesday. The policies dictate that D.C. police officers report potential fire code violations to a supervisor, who will relay the complaint to the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. A fire chief will immediately go to the site for an inspection, Fire Chief Gregory Dean said. “The goal is that we would try to get there within 30 minutes,” Dean said. “The idea behind this is that the [police] officer may not know if it’s a building- or a fire-code violation,” he said, adding that it’s easier for the fire department to go out there. The protocols stand in contrast to the handling of a police officer’s report about the Kennedy Street NW rowhouse that burned last two month, killing two. An investigator from the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs visited multiple times but closed the case without action when he could not get inside, DCRA Director Ernest Chrappah said. First segment of rail laid for Metro’s Purple Line

Overnight transit: Late-shift workers need new options in an interview. Metro in the D.C. area stays open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and no later than 11:30 p.m. the rest of the week. Metro’s current hours have been criticized by unions representing late-night and earlymorning workers, and by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. But Metro’s board in March opted against restoring later hours, arguing the change would interfere with maintenance. Transit agencies nationally are struggling to serve lateshift workers, according to an American Public Transportation Association study released Wednesday. One solution the report offers is for transit agencies to mimic Minneapolis — ask the businesses that would benefit from late-night service to pay for it. By offering reduced hours or no service after midnight, transit agencies fail to serve those who most need public transit, APTA President and CEO Paul Skoutelas told reporters on Wednesday. At least 17% of workers in U.S. metropolitan areas work late shifts, the report says. A disproportionate number of those workers are minorities and don’t earn much money. “While people of color represent 39 percent of the U.S.’ daytime workforce, they account for 45 percent of evening and early-morning workers and 52 percent of late-night workers,” the report says. The $30,000 annual median wage for late-shift workers is $5,000 lower than that of daytime workers, the report says.

Two years ago, the regional body that runs public transit around the Minneapolis area had a problem that might sound familiar to D.C.-area Metro riders. Restaurant and cafe workers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport were struggling to get to work in time for their 4 a.m. shifts. Buses and light rail trains to the airport don’t run that early. The unconventional partnership that followed could be a model for Metro and other transit agencies facing the same problem. The Metropolitan Council, the government agency that runs transit in the Twin Cities region, created a program for employers at the airport to voluntarily chip in for more bus service. Under the program, Transit Link, a Metropolitan Council van service that during the day reaches areas of the region underserved by transit, now takes airport workers to and from home and work. It’s similar to “microtransit” programs D.C. is piloting in areas that lack frequent bus service. Employees using Transit Link pay a $3.50 fare. Eight of the airport’s employers pay the other $3.50 fare for each trip their workers take. The Metropolitan Council budgeted $300,000 for the rest of the cost. “It’s a win-win for employers and employees,” Nick Thompson, the Minneapolis agency’s director of Metropolitan Transportation Services, said

But with few public transportation options, those workers have little choice but to own cars, which on average cost 30% of their annual earnings. As a result, the report says, “high transportation costs lead to greater financial stress on late-shift workers or exclude potential workers from taking advantage of late-shift jobs.” Employers also have a stake, the report says. Areas where public transportation is available late have less employee turnover. Workers with access to public transportation are also less likely to miss work. It’s unclear if D.C.-area businesses with late-night workers would be willing to pick up part of the tab. “We’d have to look at it,” Laura Abshire, the National Restaurant Association’s director of food and sustainability policy, said during the press call. Tyson Foods, the world’s second-largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef and pork, announced Thursday it’s expanding in a new direction: plantbased shellfish. Tyson has invested in New Wave Foods, a San Franciscobased startup that will debut plant-based shrimp in restaurants next year. The biggest challenge for the faux shrimp, which is made from seaweed extract and a plant protein augmented by two proprietary ingredients, was getting the right texture, says Michelle Wolf, New Wave’s cofounder. Michigan State fined $4.5M in Nassar case EAST LANSING, MICH. The U.S. government on Thursday ordered Michigan State University to pay a $4.5 million fine after determining that it failed to adequately respond to sexual assault complaints against Larry Nassar, a former campus sports doctor who molested elite gymnasts and other female athletes. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced the penalty after the conclusion of two federal investigations. She said Nassar’s actions were “disgusting and unimaginable” and that the university’s response fit the same description. “Too many people in power knew about the behaviors and the complaints and yet the predators continued on the payroll and abused even more students,” DeVos said. “This must not happen again ...” A medical school dean also faced harassment allegations. The fine is the largest ever levied under the Clery Act, a federal law that requires colleges to collect data on campus crime and notify students of threats. The previous largest fine, $2.4 million, was imposed in 2016 against Penn State over its handling of sexual misconduct involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. That legislation also seeks a three-month delay in Brexit if no terms can be reached before the Oct. 31 deadline. The House of Lords, after debating well into the night Wednesday, cleared the way for the bill to go through by Friday. Many analysts predict that a no-deal Brexit would lead to food and medicine shortages and chaos at borders. The European Union has set aside $858 million in disaster relief funds to help its member countries harmed by a no-deal Brexit. Still, Boris Johnson has argued all week that he has been making “great progress” in negotiations with European officials. In Brussels, frustration with the British drama was running high. Negotiators have all but given up on talks with Johnson’s team, seeing little point in making plans with a group that could soon be swept out by elections. “There’s been no concrete proposals yet. Contaminant eyed as cause of vaping illness HEALTH Officials investigating lung illnesses linked to vaping have found the same chemical in samples of marijuana products used by people sickened across the country in recent weeks. The chemical is an oil derived from vitamin E. Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found the oil in cannabis products in samples collected from patients who fell ill across the U.S. That same chemical was found in nearly all cannabis samples from patients who fell ill in New York, a state health department spokeswoman said. Many of those who have fallen ill said they had vaped products containing pot, but others said they used traditional nicotine e-cigarettes. Many reported using both. Authorities said they are not ruling out adulterants in nicotine vaping products. Vitamin E is found naturally in certain foods, such as olive oil. The oil derived from the vitamin, known as vitamin E acetate, is available as a nutritional supplement and is used in topical skin treatments. It is not known to cause harm when ingested as a supplement or applied to the skin. Experts say its molecular structure could make it hazardous when inhaled. CHARLESTON, S.C. Hurricane Dorian sideswiped the Carolinas with shrieking winds, tornadoes and sideways rain Thursday as it closed in for a possible direct hit on the dangerously exposed Outer Banks. At least four deaths in the Southeast were blamed on the storm. Twisters spun off by Dorian peeled away roofs and flipped trailers, and more than 250,000 homes and businesses were left without power as the hurricane pushed north along the coastline, its winds weakening to 105 mph by evening. Trees and power lines littered flooded streets in Charleston’s historic downtown. The damage from the same storm that mauled the Bahamas was mercifully light in many parts of South Carolina and Georgia as well, and by midafternoon many of the 1.5 million people who had been forced to evacuate in three states were allowed to return. Still, forecasters warned that Dorian could run straight over North Carolina’s Outer Banks late Thursday or early Friday. To the north, Virginia was also in harm’s way, and a round of evacuations was ordered there. MARYLAND Maryland’s defense can expect to play a far bigger role Saturday against No. 21 Syracuse after spending the season opener in the background of a recordsetting offense. The focus of the Terrapins’ 79-0 rout of Howard last weekend was Josh Jackson throwing four touchdown passes in his debut, the Terrapins breaking the school mark for points in a half with 56 and an attack that garnered 623 yards in its first game under coach Michael Locksley. All that obscured a defense that rang up eight sacks, allowed only 1 yard rushing and never permitted the Bison to

cross midfield in the Terps’ first shutout since 2013. Hired at Maryland after a successful run as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, Locksley loved seeing the Terrapins score 11 touchdowns. But he can also appreciate the value of a stout defensive effort. “No matter the opponent, anytime you pitch a shutout, those are tough to do in this day and age,” Locksley said Tuesday. Syracuse did the same in its opener, 24-0 over Liberty. “Defense has the well-deserved reputation of being a strength for those guys,” said Locksley, who hopes the same thing can soon apply to Maryland.

The potential is there. The secondary features three seniors, most notably safety Antoine Brooks and cornerback Tino Ellis. Transfer Shaq Smith, who played for national champion Clemson last year, heads a solid group of linebackers. The starting 11 includes five seniors and two grad students — Smith and linebacker Keandre Jones, formerly of Ohio State. “We have a little more leadership, more experience on that side of the football,” Locksley said. In his first game with Maryland, Smith had three tackles and a sack. Moving to the outside after playing middle linebacker for Clemson, the 6-foot-2, 250-pound Smith is counted on to jam tight ends, shrug off offensive tackles and seal the corner from runners looking to get outside.

“It’s not necessarily a glamorous position,” Locksley conceded. “Because of his size and strength, he’s able to do those type of things. But the thing I was really pleased with was his third-down pass rush. We were able to get some hits on the quarterback, able to get some sacks.” Defensive coordinator Jon Hoke confused Howard with multiple coverages and disguised blitzes. The plan is more of the same against Syracuse in a game that could go a long way toward enabling the Terps to establish themselves as a team — and a defense — to be reckoned with. “The chemistry we have on defense and the guys we have, we have a chance to be very special, one of the best,” Smith said. “It all depends on us.”

Brown and Mayock had a heated confrontation Wednesday after Brown posted on social media a photo of a fine letter from the team, according to a person familiar with the situation. The Raiders may take further disciplinary action, the person said. According to a report by ESPN, the team plans to suspend Brown. The league-owned NFL Network reported that Brown threatened to punch

Numbers show the way There are not a lot of Redskins believers out there. None of the six Pro Football Talk prognosticators picked Washington to make the playoffs. ESPN’s power rankings have the Redskins at No. 29 — ahead of only the Cardinals, Giants and Dolphins. And two of seven experts at CBSSports.com predicted Washington would be the last team in the league to win a game. But if the Redskins reach these eight realistically attainable goals, they will prove all the doubters wrong and punch their ticket to the playoffs. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Allow fewer than 110 rushing yards per game: The Redskins used firstround picks in 2017 and 2018 on defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, and now is the time for them to start dominating in the trenches. Last season, nine teams held their opponents to fewer than 110 rushing yards per game, and eight of them made the playoffs.

Keep Case Keenum’s interception percentage under 2%: When the journeyman led the Vikings to the NFC title game in 2017, he threw just seven interceptions in 481 passing attempts (1.5% of his throws). Last year with the Broncos, he set a career high in passing yards (3,890), but he threw 15 picks and his interception rate rose to 2.6%. As a result, Denver went 6-10.

Rack up at least 50 sacks: In this pass-happy league, an effective pass rush is essential. Four defenses had at least 50 sacks last season, and those teams went a combined 41-21-2 (.656 winning percentage). The Redskins, who had 46 sacks last year, feature a stout defensive line and two talented edge rushers in Ryan Kerrigan and rookie Montez Sweat.

Run the ball more than 30 times per game: To control the clock, Washington needs to have success on the ground and be committed to the run. In 2018, the Redskins were 5-1 when they had at least 30 rushes. And they were 0-6 when they failed to reach 100 yards rushing. Their versatile backfield of Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson should be a strength.

Average more than 30 minutes per game in time of possession: For the Redskins to be successful, they will need to replicate a run-oriented, ball-control style that worked for parts of last season. In 2018, they were 5-3 when they won the time of possession battle (more than 30 minutes), and just 2-6 when they lost it. Controlling the clock will keep their talented defense fresh.

Get Tress Way’s net punting average higher than 42 yards: As much as fans — and some coaches — hate to admit it, special teams matter. Last year, six punters had a net average higher than 42 yards and five of them were on a playoff team. Way, who had a 41.5 net average last year, is an elite punter and is capable of influencing a game by flipping field position.

Find a 1,000-yard receiver: In 2018, Jordan Reed led the team with just 558 yards receiving. The Redskins didn’t really add any playmakers this offseason, but if Reed and Paul Richardson are healthy, they are capable of reaching the 1,000-yard mark. In 2018, all but four of 12 playoff teams had a player with 1,000 yards receiving, and the Rams and Chiefs each had two.

Rank in the top 10 in the league in turnover ratio: High-scoring offenses can at times overcome turnovers, but the Redskins are not a team that’s talented enough to make up for mistakes. Over the past 20 years, Washington has ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in turnover ratio five times, including in 2018, and it made the playoffs in three of those seasons.

PERSPECTIVE The Redskins are 10-point underdogs in their opener Sunday at the Eagles (1 p.m., Fox), and most analysts predict Washington will win only three to six games this season. So what am I missing? There have been plenty of bad Redskins teams the past few decades, but this isn’t one of them. And they’ll show it Sunday by beating the Eagles 17-14. In fact, Washington has a puncher’s chance of making the playoffs if it stays healthy and its young receivers produce. Has anyone watched this defense? The line manned by two first-round picks is one of the NFL’s best. Landon Collins has energized a secondary that even has cornerback Josh Norman, above, playing to his potential. At linebacker, Ryan Kerrigan is looking to eclipse Dexter Manley’s team record for career sacks, and Montez Sweat is looming as the next big thing. Washington won’t reach 24 points too often this season because the offense is, well, who knows? The QB is on his fourth team in four years, which says a lot. But running back Derrius Guice is special. He can make this makeshift offense work. The Redskins are overlooked, afterthoughts before even the first kickoff. Ten points? Look for a surprise Sunday that really shouldn’t be a shocker. The Redskins won’t be walked over this season. RICK SNIDER (FOR EXPRESS)

Expect a lackluster ’19 offense The Redskins will look much like 2018 with a lackluster offense likely condemning them to a third straight 7-9 season. The only hope is that the defense doesn’t repeat last year’s late collapse and the club scratches out a couple of unexpected, low-scoring wins. Big years from backs Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice will offset a lack of a deep passing attack. Here are five keys to the season as Washington opens at Philadelphia on Sunday.

The Redskins have two potential 1,000-yard backs in Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice, above. That is, if the left side of the line blocks better than expected and the defense prevents blowouts that force Washington to pass 40 times per game. Peterson was expected to be the prime back, but coach Jay Gruden said Monday that Guice will get more carries. Both need 15 carries per game for maximum effect. Without a prime receiver, Gruden will lighten the passing game if the Redskins can manage four yards on first-down runs.

After declaring “potential gets you beat” last week, Gruden will rely heavily on inexperienced and injury-prone receivers. Tight end Jordan Reed, above, suffered a preseason concussion so his reliability is suspect, too. Throw in a new QB and it’s not clear how the Redskins will keep opponents from stuffing the box. Who will push defenses back, Paul Richardson? Maybe, if he can stay healthy. Tight ends Vernon Davis and Reed may end up as the top pass catchers. Better hope rookies Terry McLaurin and Kelvin Harmon come through.

Jonathan Allen, above, Daron Payne and Matt Ioannidis make up one of the NFL’s top five defensive lines. They’re strong against the run and each can pressure quarterbacks. This is Washington’s greatest overall strength. Can outside linebackers Ryan Kerrigan and Montez Sweat sweep in for 20-plus combined sacks? If the line holds, opponents will have to throw often and the Redskins will need to cover the middle better than last year. The secondary can handle itself downfield, but there’s still an opening in the middle to fill.

How do the Redskins compensate for the loss of holdout left tackle Trent Williams, above, who’ll probably miss the season? They’ll start with veteran Donald Penn, 36, but the long season might eventually require second-year lineman Geron Christian. Williams was a top blind-side protector and he opened downfield running lanes. Either the Redskins run more to the right this season or they’ll need to go young on the left side with Christian and guard Wes Martin. Gruden plays Penn and left guard Ereck Flowers now, but change will come.

With a young roster, much of 2019 is really about 2020. But without a winning season, coach Jay Gruden, above, is just readying the team for his successor. So, does he stay with veterans longer than warranted or let youth gain some experience once the season is lost? It’s a tough situation for the coaching staff, but after five seasons it’s time for them to win or leave. If veteran quarterbacks Case Keenum and Colt McCoy get injured or fail, then playing rookie Dwayne Haskins is the white flag to start off 2020.

His mother, April Justin, had packed him and his younger brother and sister into a Nissan Altima the day before the storm and driven them several hours north to her brother-in-law’s house in Sicily Island, La., where seven adults and 13 children filled a threebedroom, one-bathroom house.

It would be almost three months before the water would recede and they could return. In the meantime, Justin needed her oldest child to be something more than a little boy with a football dream. “He had to take a role of being my sidekick,” she says. Another hurricane was coming, and nothing seemed certain anymore. So she put Landon behind the wheel at a circle at the end of her brother-in-law’s subdivision. If something bad happened, she said, he was to take his brother and sister and drive them away. She showed him the ignition, the pedals and the gears. He seemed

brave, she thought, always the little man, older than his age. Years later, Collins, now 25 and a star safety for the Redskins, quietly shakes his head. “I would not have been made to be an adult like that without Katrina,” he says. “But that storm happened, and everything changed in my life, and we had to figure stuff out.” When Washington’s players talk about why this year will be different, how their defense is stronger and closer and more cohesive, the biggest reason, they say, is Collins. Many around the NFL were surprised when

the Redskins signed him to a sixyear, $84 million contract on the first day of free agency, wondering whether it was too much for a safety, despite the fact he had been to three Pro Bowls in four seasons with the Giants. But in Washington’s locker room, Collins is the unifier, the player who grew up in Louisiana wanting nothing more than to play for the team of his favorite player, Sean Taylor. “He makes a difference,” Redskins cornerback Josh Norman recently said about Collins. “Everybody says it. He makes a difference.” We need a leader, the Redskins

coaches and executives had told Collins, the way he had always seemed the strongest and wisest one on his college team at Alabama and then for those years with the Giants. But to Collins, leadership is not yelling at teammates in the locker room or screaming in pregame huddles. It’s earned through quiet conversations and bringing divergent groups of teammates together. It’s not something invented. It’s learned. And for Collins, it was learned in Sicily Island and in the months and years after they all came home in the Altima. Leadership comes from the

broken moments when an 11-yearold boy learns to drive a car — just in case — and has to make it all seem as if it’s something normal. “A lot of times I had to take over for my sister and my brother,” Collins says. “At that age, I was a man.” Deep down, Justin always had hoped Collins would grow up to become a movie star. She worked as a costumer on movie and television sets, and Collins and his brother and sister would run around the dressing rooms, wrestling in the actors’ trailers. One day, she confided her hopes for her son in actor Jason Lee as the two stood in a downtown New Orleans alley made up to look like a murder scene for the series “Memphis Beat.” Collins, who had dropped by the set, walked up to say hello, his arms already rippling through his T-shirt. Lee glanced at Collins and predicted a different career path. “I think he’s going to play in the NFL,” Lee said. Justin remembers looking at her oldest child that day and realizing that Lee might just be right. By then Collins already had a dream and a favorite player, and he knew exactly who he wanted to be. When he was in middle school, Collins sat at his mother’s kitchen counter one day, watching on her laptop video clips of the player he loved most at the time: Redskins running back Clinton Portis. That’s when he became transfixed by one of Portis’ teammates. He had never heard of Taylor, nor had he ever seen someone hit so hard. Collins sat for four hours that day, hunting for videos of Taylor. Collins’ high school teammate and best friend, Shaquille Lewis, remembers Collins taping his fingers before games just like Taylor, who never wore gloves on the field. Collins taped his helmet, too, copying the way Taylor taped his. He even cut his towel to match Taylor’s. And when Taylor was shot in his South Florida home in 2007 and died a day later, Collins

Later, he would say it was the first time he had cried for someone who wasn’t family. “As a kid you are so emotional, like you don’t know how to control it,” Collins says. “You don’t know how to understand it because even though I had never met him, I [thought] he’s my friend. I think he’s someone close to me. It touched me in that way that my favorite player had died.” He dreamed of playing for the Redskins, imagining himself wearing the same helmet and uniform as Taylor, launching himself like a human rocket into unsuspecting ballcarriers,

knocking them to the ground. When the Redskins called his agent in March and said Collins was their top free agent target, Collins was elated. “Let’s make it work,” he told his agent. A few days later, he met the team’s owner, Daniel Snyder, who presented him with a gameworn Taylor jersey that Taylor had signed. “I talked Sean Taylor from middle school to college to now,” Collins says. “I still say he’s the best safety, even though he only played four or five years. So when you talk about Ed Reed, you talk about [Troy] Polamalu, Bob Sanders … I don’t care.” He claps his hands loudly. “Sean Taylor is the best safety to play the game!” He claps his hands again. “There is nobody like him. Nobody can do what he did in the way he did it,” he says. “I really appreciate the guy for who he was on and off the field, and I love and appreciate that he was a good guy. He is a good guy.” He stops and smiles. “ I ’m t a l k i ng about h i m as if he’s still alive,” he says.

This could be a winnable game for the Redskins, depending on how Cam Newton looks.

Still clowning around The ‘It’ heroes have grown up, but the horror sequel relies on the same tired tricks FILM REVIEW “It Chapter Two,” the sequel to the 2017 horror blockbuster, features the same group of talented young actors as the original film, and also adds versions of those characters who are in their 40s. Director Andy Muschietti attempts to honor everyone involved, including Stephen King, author of the 1986 novel “It,” so the movie is like a game of musical chairs that runs too long. And since Muschietti has few scare tactics at his disposal, the film loses its capacity to frighten. You will recall that the first film had the so-called Losers Club defeat It (Bill Skarsgård), a demonic spirit that can take many forms but prefers that of

a demented clown named Pennywise. Twenty-seven years pass — this film is set in 2016 — and only Mike (Isaiah Mustafa) remembers what happened. Like a bad nightmare, the rest of them barely recall that period in their young lives. Now that Pennywise is on the prowl again, Mike contacts the rest of the Losers and asks them to return to Derry, Maine. At first, Muschietti successfully taps into the novelty of older actors — including James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain — playing adult versions of the characters. (Bill Hader leaves a particularly strong impression as Richie, the comic relief whose need to tell jokes is almost

a crutch.) For a film that’s nearly three hours long, however, a need to resolve every subplot creates a gnawing sense of impatience. Monsters and clowns are not the only thing that make the film disturbing. “Chapter Two” opens with a violent hate crime, and

adult Beverly (Chastain) deals with brutal domestic abuse. But Muschietti does not deal with their ramifications in a sensitive or dramatically consistent way. The first “It” was such a success because it was essentially a coming-of-age film with some scary bits thrown in. Now that the characters are older, there are fewer lessons for them to learn, so “Chapter Two” regresses them into a childlike state. Romantic subplots are indelicate, and shared grief arrives with less trauma. “Before You Know It” follows adult sisters Rachel (Hannah Pearl Utt) and Jackie (Jen Tullock) who, when their actor-playwright father (Mandy Patinkin) dies, are shocked to discover another name on the deed to his theater: their mother (Judith Light), a woman they thought was dead. Finally telling ‘Secrets’ U.K. spy Katharine Gun’s 2003 whistleblowing story hits the big screen

Britain’s Official Secrets Act. “It doesn’t fit a traditional structure,” Hood says, “but I hope I’ll be forgiven for that because that is true to what happened.” “Official Secrets” probes myriad issues that remain resonant a decade and a half later, including government overreach and accountability, the toxicity of anti-Muslim sentiment, and the merits of an intrepid free press. But Gun’s personal story proves to be the prism through which the film investigates such sprawling topics. When Bright saw the movie for the first time, he was struck by how Gun was the figure on screen he most identified with. (“And I’m a character in the film!” he says.) By positioning Gun as an everywoman, “Official Secrets” asks its audience to ponder the moral dilemma at its core. “I didn’t set out to be a whistleblower,” Gun says. “Hopefully people will see it and come away with the thought, ‘What would I do if I was in a similar situation?’ ”

Film A female screenwriter for the popular film “Crazy Rich Asians” has left the Warner Bros. sequel over what she alleges was a pay disparity with a white male counterpart. Adele Lim, a veteran TV writer who helped to bring author Kevin Kwan’s book to the screen last year, said in a Hollywood Reporter story Tuesday that she was offered significantly less than co-screenwriter Peter Chiarelli to work on “China Rich Girlfriend,” the sequel to the hit “Crazy Rich Asians.” She later confirmed to The Washington Post that the pay disparity was why she left the project. The screenwriter declined to provide exact numbers, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, her starting offer was $110,000, in contrast to the $800,000 to $1 million offered to Chiarelli. Lim said she believes women and people of color tend to be brought onto projects as “soy sauce,” tasked and credited with adding cultural texture but not with the heavy work of storytelling. “Being evaluated that way can’t help but make you feel that is how they view my contributions,” Lim said. Chiarelli, whose other film writing credits include “Now You See Me 2” and “The Proposal,” reportedly offered to split his fee with Lim, but she declined the gesture. Rebecca Tan

Film Katharine Gun and Martin Bright could be forgiven for fielding Hollywood’s overtures with a degree of skepticism. Ever since their story was documented in Marcia and Thomas Mitchell’s 2008 book “The Spy Who Tried to Stop a War,” Gun, the British whistleblower who attempted to prevent the Iraq War, and Bright, an investigative journalist who broke the leak, had sat down with many a filmmaker interested in translating their tale. One by one, each iteration fell by the wayside. So when veteran South African director Gavin Hood (“Tsotsi,” “Ender’s Game”) expressed interest, Gun and Bright took the development with a grain of salt. “We’d been through many ups and downs with the project,” Bright says. “We were slightly suspicious that this was yet another person promising to tell our story.” When Gun met with Hood, however, she was struck by his engagement. They ended up talking for five hours, pledging to pick up where they left off the next day. And again the day after. “He was taking handwritten notes in this vast, leather-bound notebook of his that just grew and grew and grew,” Gun says of those meetings, which went on for five days. “I could tell it was something that he took seriously.” The end result, “Official Secrets,” opens locally today with Keira Knightley playing Gun and Matt Smith as Bright. Directed and co-written by Hood, “Official Secrets” generates tension by dramatizing reallife events. But the methodical espionage thriller avoids taking substantial liberties with the true story. While a previous version of the script consolidated two of Bright’s key colleagues at The Observer newspaper into one composite character, Hood’s film honors their contributions by restoring Peter Beaumont and Ed Vulliamy as individual characters (played by Matthew Goode and Rhys Ifans, respectively). “I thought the credibility of the movie would suffer if I took license with significant people

‘Idol’ really missed out Maren Morris recounted getting rejected by “American Idol” when she was 17 on Wednesday’s episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” The country singer, 29, said she was cut in an early round after singing for just a few seconds. “I had to … find my mom’s car and just cry on the way home with her,” she said. But Morris added that now, people sing her songs while auditioning, so — “I just get the check in the mail,” she said. (EXPRESS)

Jeremy Renner has shut down his self-titled app, Vulture reported. On Wednesday, Renner posted a note on the app that read: “The app has jumped the shark. Literally.” He wrote that he had asked for the app to be shut down, citing “clever individuals who were able to manipulate ways to impersonate me and others.” Trolls, some who posed as Casey Anthony and Jeffrey Epstein, had taken over the app, according to Vulture. The 48-year-old actor launched the app in 2017. “What was supposed to be a place for fans to connect with each other has turned into a place that is everything I detest and can’t or won’t condone,” Renner wrote. The two have been linked since last month, around the time it was confirmed that Cyrus and her husband, Liam Hemsworth, had split.
