page three Inauguration gowns sold out in D.C.? Nope. THE DISTRICT President-elect Donald Trump, in a Monday interview with The New York Times, took issue with Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech in which the actress slammed Trump without actually naming him. But it was an offhand remark the president-in-waiting made after his Streep-bashing that stood out: Trump played hype man for his own inauguration, boasting that turnout would be recordsetting. “There will be plenty of movie and entertainment stars,” Trump told The Times. “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.” Hang on — is Trump actually saying that Washington’s racks are bare of formal gowns? That there are scant “great” frocks left? Putting aside the old-timey reference to “dress shops” (ladies wear all manner of clothing these

Definitely not, said Martha Slagle, vice president and general manager of the Neiman Marcus in Friendship Heights. Yep, those too — plus furs and wraps and evening coats for the notoriously chilly January nights, she said. Slagle actually laughed when we mentioned Trump’s claim about the status of Washington’s dress options. “I’m stuffed with beautiful gowns,” she said. Even the city’s smaller boutiques still have plenty of stock. “We always have dresses,” said Krista Johnson, the owner of Georgetown designer-consignment shop Ella-Rue. “Unless a thousand people came in today, we’d still have choices.” Lena Farouki, the owner and buyer at Georgetown boutique Curio Concept, similarly said she stands ready to dress inauguration attendees with an array of cocktail and formal wear. And she found it difficult to imagine all of Washington’s shops ever selling out. “It would be really difficult to achieve,” she said. “We’re a bigger city than people think.” EMILY HEIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Must have been a tasty grilled cheese A stolen bite out of his grilled cheese led a Maryland man to allegedly fire a shot inside his house and barricade himself for hours. Baltimore County police said the dispute began Sunday when the man was eating with his wife and daughter, and became angry when one of them took a bite from his sandwich, prompting him to fire a shot. The wife and daughter were able to leave the house, but the man barricaded himself inside. Daniel Blackwell, 55, has been charged with attempted murder and other offenses. (AP)
Loudoun County fire crews rescued a goose after it became stuck on the surface of a frozen pond. Officials said in a Facebook post that the Aldie, Va., fire department was alerted Sunday night to a report of a goose in distress on a frozen pond south of Dulles International Airport. The goose was stuck on top of the pond either due to an injury or illness. Firefighters put on ice rescue suits, went into the pond and got the goose. Once safe, it was turned over to a wildlife rescue group. (AP) MORE ANIMAL RESCUES

Report: Liquor board probe years in making Prosecutors: Months of wiretaps help lead to bribery charges PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY A man accused of facilitating bribes to elected officials in exchange for favorable action on legislation that would expand liquor sales in Prince George’s County was allowed to go home on Monday. The arrangement will make it easier for David Dae Sok Son, 40 of Bowie, Md., to work with lawyers on sifting through 30 months worth of wiretaps and hundreds of recordings collected in the
investigation that dates from at least 2014, said Assistant U.S. Attorney James A. Crowell IV. Son was removed from government lockdown to instead be monitored electronically at home under the supervision of his wife and the government. He was arrested last week with four others on charges of bribery and conspiracy in connection with his position as director of the liquor board in Prince George’s County. The federal government alleges he acted as a middleman for local business owners who paid state lawmakers to approve legislation that would increase permits for

Son was the only one of the four charged who was ordered to remain in government custody, after prosecutors accused him of tipping off others to the federal government’s investigation while he was working as a cooperator. Federal prosecutors allege Son was part of a long-running scheme from at least 2012 to 2015 involving a string of bribes of between $1,000 and $5,000. Son facilitated money exchanges, including one in the men’s bathroom of a restaurant, and received bribes himself for helping to influence liquor board matters, the government alleges. The nation’s capital is joining a frenzy of heavily Democratic cities spending millions of dollars to prevent President-elect Donald Trump from fulfilling his central campaign promise to deport illegal immigrants. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Monday announced plans to award grants to defense lawyers and nonprofit organizations to represent any of the District’s estimated 25,000 illegal immigrants who are faced with deportation. The fund will also help illegal immigrants in the District apply for asylum, and it will provide representation for those residing in the city legally on green cards to stay permanently, by obtaining U.S. citizenship. In a statement, Bowser said the District is “doubling down” on its status as a sanctuary city. (TWP)

Ex-Secret Service officer to plead guilty in sexting case
Prosecutors in Virginia have agreed not to seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing his 1-year-old son for the insurance money. The agreement reached Friday between prosecutors and defense lawyers for Joaquin Rams also requires Rams to give up his right to a jury trial in favor of a bench trial. Judge Randy Bellows will now decide Rams’ guilt or innocence. Rams is scheduled to go on trial in March for the 2012 death of his son, Prince McLeod Rams. (AP)

Bethesda residents mull self-governance Some in the city want more autonomy from Montgomery County BETHESDA It doesn’t have the moral and political resonance of Washington, D.C.’s statehood fight, but some Bethesda residents are asking whether their prosperous suburban community should pursue its own form of self-determination: as a self-governing city. They are driven by frustration with the Montgomery County government, especially over a proposed land-use plan that could open the door to dramatically increased building heights along the Wisconsin Avenue corridor. Last week, the Montgomery Planning Board approved a proposal for a 29-story office and apartment complex at Wisconsin and Elm, just above the projected site of a Purple Line station. That project, and the rest of the Bethesda sector plan, are subject to County Council approval. The chatter about breaking away is loud enough that two community groups, the East Bethesda Citizens Association and the Coalition of Bethesda Area Residents, are co-sponsoring a meeting on the topic Thursday in the Bethesda-Chevy

Chase High School cafeteria. “It’s just a question that’s asked so many times in so many conversations,” said Katya Marin, vice president of the East Bethesda group. Organizers emphasize that the gathering is informational only. The road to joining the state’s 156 other self-governing towns and cities (including Rockville, Frederick and Gaithersburg) is filled with legal and political challenges. Most formidable is the Montgomery County Council. Supporters have two ways to request a ballot referendum on seeking independence: collecting signatures from 25 percent of the area’s registered voters,
or a combination of 20 percent of registered voters and owners of at least 25 percent of the land. But it’s ultimately the council’s decision whether to hold a referendum election. As an independently chartered city, Bethesda would receive a chunk of state income tax revenue that currently goes to the county. And given that Bethesda boasts some of the highestincome communities in the state, the hit could be substantial. Since 1954, there have been just five successful elections for incorporation in Maryland, the last when North Chevy Chase won its charter in 1996. BILL TURQUE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In California’s Calaveras Big Trees State Park, a giant sequoia tree known for the huge tunnel carved through its trunk that cars once passed through came toppling down Sunday after being pummeled by a winter storm. The 150-foot-tall Pioneer Cabin Tree quickly became a popular tourist destination when landowners carved an enormous hole in the base 137 years ago. Park volunteer Joan Allday said the tree had been weakening and leaning severely to one side for several years. From California into Nevada, a massive storm system this weekend lifted rivers, flooding vineyards and forcing people to evacuate after mudslide warnings.

POLITICS Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump and one of his closest confidants, will join the White House as a senior adviser to the president, while Kushner’s wife, Ivanka Trump, will not immediately take on a formal role, people familiar with their plans said Monday. Kushner will not take a salary. He is expected to have a broad portfolio including government operations, trade deals and Middle East policy, according to a member of Trump’s transition team. Trump relied heavily on Kushner’s advice during the campaign, and his move to the White House was expected. But ethics experts have raised questions about whether Kushner’s role will run up against the 1967 federal anti-nepotism statute and how he will separate himself from his real estate business to avoid conflicts of interest. Kushner, 35, has run his family’s multibillion-dollar business over the past decade, after his father pleaded guilty to corruption-related charges. Kushner’s attorney, WilmerHale partner Jamie Gorelick, said in an interview Monday that Kushner is prepared to resign from his business and divest substantial assets, including

Richard Painter and Norman Eisen, who served as chief White House ethics lawyers under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, respectively, say they counseled senior White House officials to avoid appointing relatives to West Wing jobs. But Gorelick cited a subsequent law, passed in 1978, that she said allows the president to hire White House staffers “without regard” to federal personnel laws. Ivanka Trump does not plan to

A big week for Donald Trump, Cabinet picks
Meryl Streep’s criticism of Donald Trump fires up both Hollywood and Trump’s supporters
TODAY Senate Judiciary Committee: Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., for attorney general
GETTY IMAGES
POLITICS Speaking in a hoarse voice that quivered with emotion, Meryl Streep silenced a boisterous Golden Globes crowd and sparked a clamor heard around the country, all the way to Trump Tower. Streep’s impassioned speech against Donald Trump while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award at Sunday’s awards has been heard like a battle cry in a left-leaning Hollywood and further intensified the divide between Hollywood and Trump supporters, who call Streep another example of media elite on a soapbox. Though Trump is yet to take office, the arts and the president-elect are increasingly on a collision course. Trump has criticized the cast of “Hamilton,” which voiced its concerns about inclusion to Vice President-elect Mike Pence when he went to see the show on Broadway. Seeing political parallels in its story of underdog rebellion, some Trump supporters called for a boycott of the “Star Wars” film “Rogue One.” And now, following Streep’s remarks, he on Monday called the most decorated actress in Hollywood “overrated.” With such institutions as “Star Wars” and Streep in the crosshairs, the culture wars have gone
Starting today, senators will begin considering President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees. Trump said Monday he thinks all his picks will pass, even as Democrats asserted that his team was ignoring vetting protocol. Here’s this week’s hearing schedule. ELISE VIEBECK (TWP)

nuclear. Battle lines and boycotts are being formed ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration, at which most entertainers have refused to perform. Some conservatives have already vowed on social media not to watch the Feb. 26 Academy Awards, which promise to be rife with political protest. How the growing discord will affect the tenor the next four years in the arts remains to be seen. But what was clear Monday in the wake of Streep’s galvanizing speech is that the clash is just getting started. Political speeches at an award show — a little-loved, often
ridiculed tradition — have seldom reverberated so strongly. “There has never been anyone like Meryl,” applauded Ellen DeGeneres on Twitter. “I’ve never admired you more!” tweeted Sally Field. “Nearly without voice, her voice has never been so strong,” lauded Sharon Stone. Conservative pundits, though, saw Streep’s speech as a reflection of the bicoastal liberal pomposity that Trump’s election was in part a rejection of, regardless of his own show business affiliations. “This is exactly why Hollywood is dying, what a bunch of hypocrites,” said Fox’s Sean
Hannity. “The Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won,” said Meghan McCain, also a Fox personality. “And if people in Hollywood don’t start recognizing why and how — you will help him get re-elected.” The Globes telecast drew 20 million viewers on NBC, according to the Nielsen company, an 8 percent increase from last year. It’s a positive sign for the Academy Awards, which will hope political debate fuels interest in this year’s ceremony — rather than turns off viewers whose views don’t align with Hollywood’s. “I am a Jew because in every place where suffering weeps, the Jew weeps. I am a Jew because when despair cries out, the Jew hopes.” - Edmond Fleg
These are uncertain, and for many among us, anxious times. We have just completed an election cycle marred by a disproportionate level of public vitriol and ridicule. Where we once experienced America with shades of purple, we now see only red and blue, sharply divided along ideological fault lines. Hate crimes, while never absent from this nation, are now being brazenly perpetrated, sometimes in the name of the person who will occupy the most powerful public office in the world. Potential governmental appointments, while legal and certainly at the prerogative of the incoming administration, bring together ideologies, that if structurally realized, could roll back some of our society’s most cherished victories for human dignity in the last few generations. Not only are we as rabbis deeply concerned with anti-semitic hate speech, we also take seriously the biblical obligation to “Love the other as yourself” (Lev. 19:18) and are thus equally concerned with hate speech against all people. As rabbis, as people of faith, as leaders in faith dedicated to channeling the wisdom of our tradition and the will of God, we declare to the Washington D.C. community: We understand that elections have consequences. But we also must recognize that these consequences, should the campaign rhetoric be acted upon, could very likely cultivate a particularly precarious time for the most vulnerable among us, including people of color, immigrants, refugees, Muslims and other religious minorities, women, the differently abled, the poor, and the GLBTQ community. To these vulnerable communities: We are with you. We will not abandon you. Only together do we transcend the shortsightedness of those who choose to threaten us, divide us, and do us harm. Our actualized love for all humanity-divinely and equally created--will be your sanctuary.
To the incoming administration: Welcome to our great city. We expect that, first and foremost, your victory in this election prompts you to revisit your campaign rhetoric and the hate crimes it may have unleashed -- if even unwittingly -- and reframe your agenda to include the voices of ALL the people residing within this great and pluralistic country. One of our core roles as rabbis is to lift up Jewish values in the public square. Those values, while expansive and diverse, urge us to throw in our lot with the most vulnerable of any community. We intend to do this, alongside you in good faith, or despite you, also in good faith. We sincerely hope and pray you choose the path which demands dignified treatment and opportunity for all, and we invite you to join us in making choices to that sacred end.

U.S. troops target ISIS chiefs Rare ground operation in Syria is a departure from drone warfare MILITARY Members of an elite U.S. force have carried out a rare ground operation in eastern Syria aimed at capturing leaders of the Islamic State, U.S. officials said Monday. The raid Sunday was along the Euphrates River valley and north of Deir al-Zour, deep in ISIS territory, the officials said. The troops, who landed on
The raid appeared to be an operation by the Expeditionary Task Force, a team of Special Operations forces based in Iraq that is charged with hunting down ISIS leaders. Col. John Dorrian, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition, confirmed that the raid had taken place but didn’t provide details. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 25 ISIS members were killed in the operation. Another activist group, Sound and Picture, said two ISIS prisoners were freed,
but the details could not be independently confirmed. The U.S.-led coalition has in recent months targeted and killed a string of senior ISIS officials with drone strikes, but ground raids aimed at capturing leaders are rare. Abu Sayaf, a top financier, was killed in May 2015, also in the province of Deir al-Zour. In July 2014, Special Operations forces landed near ISIS’ self-proclaimed capital of Raqqa to rescue Western hostages, but they did not find any. LIZ SLY

Retirement plan for millennials? Save much more.

The amount of student debt of Americans over 60, as more people pay for their children and grandchildren to go to college, according to a new report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The number of over-60 debtors has quadrupled in 10 years — escalating from 700,000 in 2005 to 2.8 million in 2015. Older debtors also have a tougher time paying back what they owe, as people over 65 had a 37 percent default rate — more than double the rate of those under 50 (17 percent), Quartz reports. (EXPRESS)

A U.S. official said U.S. forces intercepted a vehicle thought to be carrying senior ISIS members, but declined to say whether the militants had been captured or killed. The official, who spoke anonymously about an operation not yet announced by the Pentagon, said there were no American casualties.

A plan to save polar bears
As the Arctic warms faster than any other place on Earth, there th is only one sure way to save polar bears — which greatly depend on sea ice to catch prey and survive — from extinction, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Monday: decisive action on human-driven climate cli change. But the agency’s plan is treading on thin ice. Global climate change is out of its control, and an President-elect Donald Trump has questioned U.S. participation in the Paris climate treaty. Wall Street analysts are predicting that the Standard & Poor’s 500 index will gain 4 percent in 2017 — the lowest expected annual gain for the stock market since 2005, according to Bespoke Investment Group. Many investment pros have been saying the market could be sluggish not just this year but for a couple of decades. If true, workers saving today for retirement may not get as much from their portfolios as previous generations did. Advisers say millennials, who are decades from retirement, will need to save more — in some cases twice as much as their predecessors — to make up the difference. The reason for the dismal view is that stock market gains were so robust over the past 30 years that it will be pretty tough for the market to match those returns going forward, some economists say. U.S. stock markets gained 7.9 percent a year on average between 1985 and 2014. Stocks have grown pricier as the market has climbed, giving them less room to grow. Exactly how much millennials should be saving for retirement in light of lower projections is up for debate. Many financial advisers recommend that workers aim to save 10 to 15 percent of their pay. But other experts say millennials should save much more, up to nearly a quarter of their income, to avoid running out of money in old age if stock market returns fall. JONNELLE MARTE

THREE POINTERS
Upgrading the Nats
Another rally gives Wizards mixed feelings NBA Eight times this season, the Wizards have won a game in which they trailed by double digits, the latest example being Sunday’s 107-101 victory over the Bucks in Milwaukee. That could be testimony to Washington’s resilience and recent improvement — or to the fact that the Wizards routinely find themselves trailing by double figures. Most players accentuated the positive after a victory that got the team back to .500 — the Wizards are 18-18 entering tonight’s home game against Chicago (7, CSN) — but the successful rally couldn’t completely cover up all the reasons they needed one in the first place. Leading to that double-digit deficit was their tendency to leave open shooters, turnovers
compounded by more mistakes on the defensive end, and relaxation after learning that the Bucks’ best player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, would miss the game because of illness. Although no one in the locker room admitted to this offense, the head coach noticed. “We have to play solid throughout the game,” Scott Brooks said. Besides Antetokounmpo being unavailable to play point forward, Bucks starting point guard Matthew Dellavedova was hobbled after missing five games with a hamstring injury. Dellavedova came off the bench as rookie Malcolm Brogdon got the start. So Milwaukee did not have its leading scorer, and its lead guard played less than 20 minutes. Yet the Wizards did not immediately exploit these weaknesses. Instead, they fell into a 12-point hole before halftime. “I think human nature kicked in,” Brooks said. “They didn’t have Giannis and we kind of relaxed. You can’t do that.” Washington reacted too slowly

Players would rather correct early deficits than rely on resilience
Pitchers and catchers report for spring training in five weeks, and it’s questionable whether the Nationals have gotten better this offseason. Here are three ways they can improve. (TWP)
Bradley Beal scored a team-high 26 points in a 107-101 win over the Bucks as the Wizards came back from a double-digit deficit for the eighth time.
SECOND-HALF POINTS

The number of points the Wizards scored after halftime Sunday — the eighth game they’ve won after trailing by double figures. The Bucks led by 12 late in the first half, but the Wizards held them to 2-of-11 shooting on second-half 3-pointers. C.B.
as shooters found daylight around the perimeter, and John Wall committed four turnovers over the final 1:34 of the first quarter. Through the opening
frame, the Wizards gave away eight possessions that led to 12 points for Milwaukee. “We showed great resilience,” said Wall, who finished with 16 points, seven assists and five turnovers. Bradley Beal (26 points) compared this season’s run of comebacks to previous years in which the Wizards struggled to recover from big deficits. That shows poise and maturity, he said. Yet comebacks only happen when something goes wrong, and Beal offered a simple suggestion to prevent future rallies: “We need to stop getting down by double digits in the first place.”
Bargains can be found in the remains of the free agent market. The Nats could find value in sluggers who once seemed not to fit but could work at reasonable prices.
2 Build the bench Re-signing infielder Stephen Drew would provide depth, experience and stability. The Nats are interested, but Drew has reportedly been pursuing an everyday job elsewhere.
1 Find a closer Greg Holland could be a smart financial fit in a bloated relief market, as he would come with a Tommy John discount. Holland is already in negotiations with teams.

After getting fired as Cleveland’s coach, Mike Pettine spent the 2016 season out of football.
Pettine first to interview for Barry’s former job Former Browns coach talks with the Redskins about coordinator role NFL Washington interviewed former Browns coach Mike Pettine on Monday for its defensive coordinator opening, the team announced. The first known interview for the job took place at Redskins Park just four days after the team fired Joe Barry, whose unit finished 28th in total defense two years in a row. Pettine, 50, was not on an NFL coaching staff last season after he was fired by the Browns following two seasons as their head coach. Prior to his tenure in Cleveland, the Virginia alumnus

spent the previous five seasons as a defensive coordinator for the Jets (2009-12) and Bills (2013). In Pettine’s season with Buffalo, the Bills ranked 10th in total defense (fourth in pass defense and 28th in run defense), 14th on third downs and 20th in points per game allowed. In his final year with the Jets, Pettine’s unit ranked eighth in total defense (second against the pass and 26th against the run), 12th on third downs and 20th in points per game allowed. In, 2002, Pettine received his NFL start as a coaching assistant for the Ravens under Brian Billick. Pettine began in quality control and as a coaching and video assistant for two seasons before he was promoted to a defensive line assistant in 2004. The
native of Doylestown, Pa., served as an outside linebackers coach during his final four years with the Ravens. Pettine is one of a number of candidates being considered for the opening. The Redskins received permission to interview Panthers assistant head coach/ secondary coach Steve Wilks on Friday. The only defensive coordinator hiring that has happened since the regular season concluded occurred over the weekend. The Browns, who fired defensive coordinator Ray Horton, hired former Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who was Washington’s defensive coordinator from 2004 to 2007. MASTER TESFATSION

Tar Heels QB invites scrutiny as top prospect North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky announced Monday he would forgo his final season of college eligibility to enter the NFL draft after throwing 30 touchdown passes and six interceptions as a junior. Trubisky received a first-round grade from the NFL advisory board, and most mock drafts have him going high to a quarterback-needy team NFL Media’s Bucky Brooks was in El Paso, Texas, to watch Trubisky’s final college game, a 25-23 loss to Stanford in the Sun Bowl last month, and the analyst dissected what scouts like about Trubisky apart from his 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame. “I was impressed with Trubisky’s ability to connect with his receivers on out-breaking routes. ... Trubisky delivers the ball on time and on target before the receiver comes out of his break, which is what will be expected of him at the next level,” Brooks wrote before delving into the passer’s flaws. Brooks took issue with Trubisky’s reads and judgment, noting that he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. Trubisky was a starter for only one year at UNC. He couldn’t beat out Marquise Williams for the job in 2015. Yahoo’s Eric Edholm points out that Williams couldn’t land a role in the NFL, so Trubisky’s inability to win a job over a non-NFL talent could give teams pause. MATT BONESTEEL

Skip the winter detox
Many people’s New Year’s resolutions boil down to getting fit and saving money. If you find a deal on a gym membership, you can do both. Here’s how. ELISABETH LEAMY (TWP)
Time it right According to Consumer Reports, the best time to sign up for a gym is toward the end of any month, when gyms are trying to meet monthly quotas.
There’s no need to go on a juice cleanse — your body already has it under control NUTRITION You’re probably already sick of hearing the word “detox,” as the diet industry is jumping on its annual window of opportunity with resolution-makers. Apart from all the hype, is there anything true or helpful about the notion of detoxing? Let Rebecca Katz, author and founder of the Healing Kitchens Institute, explain: Have our bodies actually built up toxins during the weeks of holiday partying? A toxin is a substance that’s considered poisonous, so unless those extra cookies you’ve been eating over the holidays are laced with arsenic, I don’t think you have to detox in January. Besides, our bodies are designed to detox 24/7. If they didn’t do this, we wouldn’t be able to survive. So we don’t need to do something drastic? Going on a seven-day juice cleanse in the middle of the winter is not how your body is
going to necessarily detox from feasting over the holidays. In fact, you can engage in the occasional feast if you take care of yourself throughout the year. How does detoxification actually work in our bodies? The liver and kidneys do much of the heavy lifting of removing harmful substances from our bodies. The liver detoxes in two phases. The key is that the liver breaks down harmful compounds — everything from pesticides to alcohol — and converts them into water-soluble molecules so they can be flushed from your system. How can we optimize our bodies’ natural detoxification? There are plenty of nutrients that keep the liver and the rest of the body happy, including one that you may not expect: fiber. Another way we can optimize the body’s natural detox system is by staying well hydrated. Also, shifting your black-and-white

As people think about their New Year’s resolutions, how can they harness the real meaning of detoxification to help them reach their long-term goals? Falling in love with vegetables, herbs and spices — nature’s best cleaning crew — will help you to create sustainable nourishment, which will boost your body’s ability to rid itself of internal debris. Now that the new year is upon us, it would be more productive and fun to look at all the nourishing foods we can incorporate into our lives with joy instead of dread.
Never join a gym without searching daily-deal sites like Groupon and LivingSocial. Gym memberships and exercise classes are among their most common offers.

Use your health insurance Many insurance companies now include some sort of gym benefit as part of their plans. Aetna, for example, says it offers discounted rates at more than 10,000 gyms.

But her intentions were constantly thwarted when people kept hiring her as an actress. I’ve never been trained in Shakespeare. Does that mean I can’t do it?” What she learned on camera catapulted her to “Doctor Who,” where she performed 39 episodes of the sci-fi favorite and

became friends with two of the Doctors, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi. Eventually, that part led to her resplendent role in “Victoria,” premiering at 9 p.m. on PBS’ “Masterpiece” this Sunday. In “Victoria,” Coleman interprets
England’s long-reigning queen from age 18 to 21 — the defining years, as Coleman sees them. “I did lot of research on Victoria, how creative she was, which I never knew,” Coleman says. “She had such passion for music and opera and ballet and visuals. She
created her own wedding dress, and wrote in her diary, and did watercolor and sketch, and she tried to learn how to sing opera. She had people come around to the house and teach her. She’s so vibrant and unapologetically full of life and never tried to hide it or pull back from it, which I really love about her.” At the same time, Coleman was drawn to the character’s complexity. Queen Victoria is bold and compelling, yet she’s not at all perfect. “She’s really inconsistent and very flawed, but I love that,” Coleman says. “I think that’s what’s been quite tricky to play her, being unashamedly flawed. I’m trying to make that likable. It’s really tricky, but it’s who she was, and it’s what makes her so marvelous.” LUAINE LEE (TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE VIA AP)

Streep said that when Trump mocked a disabled reporter, it “sank hooks” in her heart, and she issued a call for Americans to support the press in holding Trump accountable. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) A warning received early in the day may not pan out as feared, but an issue that will arise as a result may give you pause. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll want to see things more clearly in order to sort them out to your satisfaction. You may have to move around a little. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll need to put more effort into a certain project than you had expected. Does this mean putting something else aside? ARIES (March 21-April 19) You have every reason to believe that what you have planned for is going to happen, so stay the course. Adjustments can be made if necessary.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) What

MONDAY’S SOLUTION
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You know what someone is up to, and you know how to keep from getting tangled in his or her web of deceit. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You have a great deal to tell when given the opportunity, so make sure that you are prepared. Don’t try to commit everything to memory.

TODAY: Light winds from the south gradually draw in some less cold air, but considerable cloud cover throughout the day puts a lid on temperatures between 35 to 40 degrees. A warm front in the region could squeeze out a sprinkle or some very spotty light rain, but that probably holds off until overnight.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What you have to do must very likely be done alone, but you know that a good friend has your back and is sending you positive thoughts. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The team you have assembled is ready to roll, but you mustn’t give any of them too much individual power.
