‘Hobbit’ happy to be home after a long and harrowing adventure

A burglar at a tire store in Lubbock, Texas, has been branded the “Toilet Paper Bandit” after cameras recorded him stealing cash and a four-pack of bathroom tissue. Surveillance video at Crest Tires showed a man breaking in through the back door Saturday night and stealing $100 from the register and the toilet paper from a shelf. “Maybe they wanted to get a clean getaway,” proprietor Wendy Houston told Everything Lubbock. A hardbound edition of “The Hobbit” is back on the shelves at an Ithaca, N.Y., library nearly four decades after it was checked out. Bob James said he borrowed the J.R.R. Tolkien classic before enlisting in the Marines in 1979, and later loaned it to fellow Marines and sailors aboard at least eight ships in the western Pacific. He brought the book home after leaving the Marines and kept it until last week, when he returned it. With no fine. (AP)

crowd. Andre 3000 in shades at the Atlanta march. Ian McKellen, Gillian Anderson and Lin-Manuel Miranda marched in London. Politicians and pundits have continued to debate the relevance of celebrity support for a cause. During the presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton’s events featured artists who regularly sell out stadiums (Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen, for example). Trump had Scott Baio.

Using one’s fame to bring attention — however inelegantly or gracefully — to a political cause has a long tradition in this country. From award speeches about the treatment of Native Americans to Capitol Hill testimony about war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, entertainers have often tried to use their status to amplify serious issues. But on Saturday, many famous folks attended marches in a more low-key manner. Their fame wasn’t the platform they stood upon — it became an accessory, like the pussyhats on their heads. If anything, many of the famous in attendance benefited from aligning themselves with the movement’s messages. A number documented their experience in declarations of solidarity that also underscored the cultural cachet that comes with showing you participated in such an event. Besides, more than a million people showed up to events across the U.S. These marches didn’t need a celebrity boost for the country to pay attention. ELAHE IZADI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Metro cards wanted after busy weekend After hundreds of thousands of people visited for the inauguration of President Donald Trump and the Women’s March on Washington, a charity is collecting SmarTrip cards visitors no longer need. Martha’s Table (marthastable.org), a nonprofit that works with children and families, is collecting leftover cards from out-of-towners. Martha’s Table spokesman Ryan Palmer says the charity will distribute cards to people who come in for its no-cost clothing and food programs, many of whom rely on public transportation. (AP)

PROTEST President Trump’s inaugural festivities lacked the kind of high-wattage star power that the women’s marches across the country attracted Saturday. And while Madonna, Janelle Monae and Scarlett Johansson addressed the hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall, plenty of A-listers showed up to the event without taking to the stage. There was Katy Perry, who has performed many times for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, leading chants in D.C.’s streets. Julia Roberts wearing a pink pussyhat in Washington. Leggett vetoes bill increasing minimum pay

Health-care outreach extends to happy hour Officials go unorthodox in urging millennials to enroll in Obamacare THE DISTRICT The outreach workers joined the line at a Michael “Air” Jordan shoe launch. They went to Denny’s after D.C.’s clubs had closed. They hung out at happy hours, gyms and Sunday brunches. This month, as Republicans in Congress moved to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and President Trump signed an executive order weakening its provisions, D.C. health insurance exchange officials have been rushing to sign up millennials before the open enrollment period ends Jan. 31. “When we talk to folks, some say they want to make sure they have a policy in place” before it’s too late, said Mila Kofman, executive director of the D.C. Health Benefit Exchange Authority. “All of our numbers are up from last year. More people are using the website to enroll. Our call center volume is very

high. I have not seen a chilling effect on enrollment.” Many people know that Trump has vowed to repeal and replace Barack Obama’s signature health-care law, known as Obamacare, which has extended insurance to about 20 million people. “I’m worried about it,” said Trenton Hardison, 24, a financial consultant who lives in Northeast D.C. and relies on the Affordable Care Act for his health insurance. He was waiting tables earlier this month at Red Rocks Restaurant on H Street NE, where D.C. Health Link workers had set up a station to sign up young people attending happy hour. “Hopefully, it doesn’t get repealed.” On its website, D.C. Health Link, the District’s health insurance exchange, notified users: “The outcome of the 2016 presidential election doesn’t impact your ability to enroll in affordable quality health insurance for 2017. … Open enrollment for individuals and families ends on January 31, 2017. Small businesses can sign up throughout

the year. Residents can apply for Medicaid throughout the year.” It doesn’t address the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s executive action. Si nce D.C . He a lth L i nk launched, the District’s uninsured rate has dropped to just 3 percent, among the lowest rate of uninsured when compared with other cities across the country. “Forty-one percent of new customers are ages 26 to 34,” Kofman said. “When we first started, we looked at the uninsured data in the District. We tried to focus on populations that tend to not have coverage. In D.C. more than 50 percent of the uninsured were 40 and under.” The D.C. exchange opened in 2013, and it has deployed all kinds of unconventional strategies to encourage millennials to sign up for health care. “All of the outreach efforts have focused on this idea: We don’t expect people to come us. We go to them, where people eat, live, sleep and pray,” Kofman said. DENEEN L. BROWN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Metro to boost service Friday during anti-abortion rally in D.C.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett on Monday vetoed legislation that would have made the wealthy jurisdiction the first in Maryland to require a $15 minimum wage. Leggett said boosting the wage to the level embraced by national progressive activists, including former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, would harm Montgomery’s economy and its ability to compete for jobs in the Washington region. The only locality that has adopted a $15 minimum is D.C., which will require employers to pay that wage by 2020. Leggett left the door open to reconsidering a revised bill, pending a study of the economic impacts of a $15 wage on the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Maryland’s current $8.75 minimum wage will rise to $9.25 in July and $10.10 in July 2018. (TWP)

Sailor gets 11 years for murder-for-hire plot A Navy sailor has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for trying to hire a hit man to kill his estranged wife. WAVY-TV reported Monday that Chadwick Ghesquiere got three years less than what prosecutors sought. Ghesquiere pleaded guilty in October. Prosecutors say Ghesquiere hired an undercover federal agent to kill his estranged wife, promising the agent $50,000. The money would have come from a life insurance payout. Ghesquiere also offered 80 Adderall pills as part of the deal. The medicine had been prescribed to him by the Navy. He had faced a maximum sentence of 14 years. (AP) FAIRFAX COUNTY

Suspect arrested in fatal beating Southeast man held in attack on panhandler outside Union Station THE DISTRICT D.C. police have arrested a suspect in the fatal beating of a 57-year-old panhandler outside Union Station, less than a week after the victim’s brother made a plea for help finding the attacker. Victor Purdie, 56, of Southeast, was charged with second-degree murder. Police did not provide the suspect’s age, or spell out a possible motive for the attack. The victim, Richard Lewis, who had no fixed address, was beaten and repeatedly kicked in the head in the passenger dropoff area of Union Station about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 2. Lewis never regained consciousness, and died Jan. 6, becoming the District’s first homicide victim of 2017. Police released a video of a

person of interest, seen smoking in the area shortly after the attack. It was not immediately clear if the man in the video is the suspect who was arrested Sunday. Earlier this month, Lewis’ brother, Kent Lewis, who lives in Ashburn, Va., said his sibling had regularly panhandled at Union Station and that he had suffered from schizophrenia. Kent Lewis said his brother had been diagnosed with his mental illness after enlisting in the U.S. military many years ago. In the late 1980s, Richard followed his brother to the District and worked as a night watchman, taking medication to keep his disease under control. “He was a good guy,” Kent Lewis said. “He was a smart guy. He unfortunately fell prey to this illness. This illness led to him being taken advantage of by the people in his world.” PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

nation+world Step toward ending civil war is marred by deep animosities ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN The rocky start to talks between the Syrian government and representatives of rebel factions was evident Monday after their first face-to-face meeting in Kazakhstan, which marked a major shift in the war’s dynamics and confirmed Russia’s role as regional heavyweight. The gathering in Astana, the Kazakh capital, is the latest in a long line of diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the nearly 6-year-old civil war, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced half of

Syria’s population. The talks are focused on shoring up a shaky cease-fire declared Dec. 30, not on reaching a larger political settlement. Syria’s bitter divide was on vivid display as the delegates emerged from a closed, hour-long session marked by cold glances and sharp exchanges. Syria’s U.N. envoy, Bashar Ja’afari, said the opposition delegation represented “terrorist armed groups,” and denounced the opening address delivered by the chief rebel negotiator, calling it “provocative” and “insolent.” The head of the rebel delegation, Mohammad Alloush, had described Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government as a “terrorist” entity. He called for

according to a video leaked by opposition delegates. After an opening ceremony, both sides split and did not meet face-to-face again. The meeting later concluded for the day. Still, it was a big departure from past meetings, given the fact that government representatives sat opposite representatives of more than a dozen armed factions it describes as terrorists. The two sides were brought to the table by Russia and Iran, which have provided crucial support to Assad, and by Turkey, a leading sponsor of the opposition. U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura mediated the talks, which are to be followed by more negotiations in Geneva next month.

nation+world President Trump prepares to sign an executive order Monday pulling the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

WASHINGTONPOST.COM MORNING MIX

Trump’s manic Monday

Following a tumultuous first weekend in office — consumed by President Trump’s criticism of the media’s inauguration coverage and by his spokesman’s inaccurate tirade against journalists — the president sought to refocus on the sweeping, yet often vague, promises he made as a candidate. Monday was Trump’s first formal day in the White House, and he made it a busy one, signing several executive orders and holding separate meetings with CEOs and union leaders. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Business meetings Trump welcomed leaders from several of the country’s largest corporations and promised to wipe out at least 75 percent of government regulations that hinder their businesses, fast-track their plans to open factories and cut taxes “massively.” And he again threatened to impose a “substantial border tax” on companies that move production out of the country. “We’re going to be cutting regulation massively,” Trump told a large group of CEOs. He also met with about a dozen union leaders, telling them he is redoing the nation’s trade deals “to put a lot of people back to work.”

Trans-Pacific Partnership Trump signed an executive order formally ending U.S. participation in the TPP. The move was largely symbolic — the deal was already essentially dead in Congress — but served to signal that Trump’s tough talk on trade will carry over to his new administration. The TPP was one of former president Obama’s signature efforts, part of a broader strategy to increase American clout in Asia and provide a check on China’s economic and military ambitions. But Obama’s own Democratic Party was skeptical of the pact, and the former president never sent it to Congress for ratification.

Federal hiring freeze

Global abortion gag

Spicer defends claim

Trump instituted a government-wide hiring freeze Monday, signing an executive order that he said would affect all employees “except for the military.” Trump had pledged to halt government hiring as part of his campaign’s “Contract With the American Voter,” which he framed as part of a larger effort to “clean up corruption and special interest[s] in Washington D.C.” Speaking to reporters Monday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the hiring freeze aimed to send this message: “We’ve got to respect the American taxpayer.”

A rule is back in effect to block U.S. aid to international familyplanning organizations that use other money to discuss or pay for abortions in foreign countries. Trump reversed Obama’s 2009 decision that let the money flow. The decision means nonprofits abroad will have to end patient counseling in which abortion is mentioned, or forgo U.S. dollars. The rule is known as the “Mexico City policy” by its supporters and the “global gag rule” by its foes. Its imposition and absence have toggled back and forth each time a different party has controlled the White House.

At spokesman Sean Spicer’s first full press briefing, he acknowledged the figures he provided Saturday about the number of trips taken on Metro during the inauguration were at odds with numbers provided by the Metro system. But he stood by the assertion that Trump’s inauguration audience was the largest ever. Spicer said his definition of a viewing audience does not just include those on the Mall or watching on TV but also the “tens of millions” who watched online. He also said, “Our intention is never to lie to you,” although sometimes the Trump administration may “disagree with the facts.”

Trump-speak: A headache for translators For some, President Trump’s simple vocabulary and grammatical structure make his speeches easy to follow. But for translators bringing his speeches to non-English audiences, his confusing logic and a tendency to jump from topic to topic make translating his remarks a headache. Bérengère Viennot, a French translator, told the Los Angeles Review of Books that Trump’s broken syntax and repetition of phrases make it difficult to translate into French, a language that emphasizes structure and logic. “It’s as if he had thematic clouds in his head ... with no need of a logical thread to link them,” Viennot said. Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” creates a grammatical and semantic mess, according to an article in the Spanish newspaper El País. In Spanish, for example, one translation, “Haz América grande otra vez,” could also come across as “Make America big again,” or “Do America great again.” Agness Kaku, a translator based in Tokyo, told The Post that previous American presidents have appeared wary of speech that is too colorful, with an awareness that it must be understood by global audiences. “I’m not sure if this one will understand that,” Kaku said. “I don’t think he cares.” SAMANTHA SCHMIDT

Tillerson narrowly passes committee Democrats break with tradition, vote ‘no’ on secretary of state pick POLITICS Rex Tillerson’s bid to be secretary of state narrowly won approval Monday from the Republican-led Foreign Relations Committee, a move that all but assures Senate confirmation of President Trump’s choice to be the nation’s top diplomat. Members of the committee voted along party lines, 11-10, to back Tillerson following a contentious confirmation hearing nearly two weeks ago that stoked concerns he might not win the panel’s recommendation. But just hours before members cast their votes, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., declared his support for the former Exxon Mobil chief, backing off from a challenge to the new president. Rubio said that despite serious reservations about Tillerson, particularly over his views on Russia, he believed a president was entitled to significant deference in assembling his Cabinet. Liberal group sues Trump Ethics watchdog says his business dealings are unconstitutional

Report: Global sea levels could rise by 8 feet A lawsuit filed Monday argues the Constitution bars the president from accepting any payments from foreign governments, including at his hotels.

preconditions of self-governance. And applied to Donald J. Trump’s diverse dealings, the text and purpose of the Foreign Emoluments Clause speak as one: this cannot be allowed.” Trump called the lawsuit “without merit, totally without merit” at the White House on Monday. If the lawsuit were to succeed, it could put a major dent in the business of the Trump Organization — whose businesses lease office space to companies owned by foreign states, and whose Pennsylvania Avenue NW hotel rents ballrooms for foreign embassy parties. The mere process of the suit could prove embarrassing for the president if it drags out details of those business dealings from the Trump Organization’s

private files. Norm Eisen, a lawyer working on the case, told The New York Times that he hoped the suit could produce a copy of Trump’s tax returns, which could detail business he does with — and money he owes to — foreign states such as China and Russia. Before Trump took office, Sheri Dillon, Trump’s lawyer, said it is incorrect to say that Trump is violating the Emoluments Clause if his company does business with a foreign government — taking its money and giving it something of value in return: “This is not what the Constitution says. Paying for a hotel room is not a gift or a present, and it has nothing to do with an office. It’s not an emolument,” Dillon said then. In this particular case, the liberal watchdog group’s suit

appears likely to face difficult legal hurdles. One would be Dillon’s argument that paying a hotel bill is not a prohibited gift. Another problem is the question of the watchdog group’s standing to sue. There is a general rule that to file suit against someone for wrongdoing, a plaintiff must have suffered some specific harm from that wrongdoing. The watchdog says its own group was hurt by having to spend so much time monitoring this issue: “CREW has been forced to divert essential and limited resources — including time and money — from other important matters … to the Foreign Emoluments Clause issues,” the suit says. CHINA’S BIRTH RATE

The percent increase in births in China from 2015 to 2016, according to statistics from that country’s National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), the BBC reported Monday. The increase follows China’s easing of its strict one-child policy at the beginning of 2016. There were 17.86 million births in 2016, the most since 2000, despite a decline in the number of women of child-bearing age. The NHFPC estimates that there will be 17 million to 20 million yearly births by 2020. (EXPRESS) Iraq’s prime minister orders probe into violations by government troops in Mosul

POLITICS A liberal watchdog group filed a lawsuit against President Trump in federal court Monday alleging that he is in violation of a constitutional provision that bars him from taking gifts or payments from foreign governments. The group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said that because Trumpowned buildings take in rent, room rentals and other payments from foreign governments, the president has breached the Emoluments Clause. That clause in the Constitution says that “no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under [the United States], shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.” The watchdog group says the text should be interpreted to mean that Trump’s businesses should cease all business dealings with foreign states. While the language in the clause is disputed by legal experts, the suit signaled the start of a legal assault by Trump critics on what they see as unprecedented conflicts between his business and the presidency. The clause, the legal complaint says, “is no relic of a bygone era, but rather an expression of insight into the nature of the human condition and the

A new report, released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on the last day of Barack Obama’s presidency, presents a series of updated estimates for future sea-level rise, both in the U.S. and worldwide. It suggests that, under extreme future climate change, global sea levels could rise by more than 8 feet by the end of the century — one of the highest estimates yet to be presented in a federal report. The report also contains regional estimates, suggesting that many parts of the U.S. will experience sea-level rise at a rate well above the global average. And with little more than a foot of sea-level rise, many coastal cities could see a 25-fold increase in the frequency of damaging floods. How soon this could happen will depend on the severity of global warming. Prior public reports have focused on only global sea-levelrise estimates. The new report aimed to both update these global estimates and provide regional assessments as well for local governments to use when making decisions about how to protect coastal communities. The new report includes six possible climate scenarios. It suggests that in the most extreme scenario, global mean sea levels could rise 8.2 feet by the year 2100. In the lowest scenario, sea levels may rise by 1 foot by 2100. CHELSEA HARVEY

SUPER BOWL LI

Brady and Belichick say berth after Deflategate is the same as others NFL As the Super Bowl LI matchup was falling into place Sunday night — a compelling pairing that pits the Patriots against the Falcons — the fans in Gillette Stadium were making clear what the NFL’s main subplot would be over the coming two weeks. “ Ro - ger! Ro - ger!” t hey chanted in the third quarter before switching to, “Where is Roger?” in the fourth. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who was suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for the first four games of this regular season, will take what many have branded as his Deflategate Revenge Tour to the season’s final game Feb. 5 in Houston. But late Sunday night, Brady was not playing along. After a 36-17 win over the Steelers in the

AFC championship game, Brady said he couldn’t hear the chant. After avoiding trips to New England since suspending Brady, Goodell could be handing the Patriots the trophy for what would be their fifth Super Bowl triumph engineered by the quarterback and coach Bill Belichick. But Brady wouldn’t acknowledge any unusual sense of personal accomplishment for his seventh Super Bowl appearance with the coach. “This didn’t start at 6:40 tonight,” Brady said. “This thing started in April. It really started before that. In free agency we were picking up guys like [Chris] Hogan and drafting guys like Malcolm Mitchell. … It’s a lot of hard work.” Belichick wouldn’t go there, either. “Every year has its own challenges,” he said. “Whatever they are, they are. Every team faces them.” The challenge now for the Patriots will be dealing with

should present more obstacles for Atlanta. The Patriots led the league in scoring defense during the regular season. The unit improved steadily throughout the season after once being regarded as a potential postseason liability. On Sunday in the postgame locker room, Patriots cornerback and former Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler wasn’t ready to switch gears. He avoided answering when asked about defending the Falcons’ standout dout wide receiver, Julio Jones, in n the Super Bowl. “You’re going too far,” he said. “I’m enjoying the moment, man.” an.”

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh is taking his team to Italy this spring, calling the trip a learning experience and a chance to be ambassadors for the U.S. and the school. The Wolverines will hold three spring practices at the training facility of Italian league soccer club Roma in Rome. Michigan held part of its spring practice last year at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., during spring break. Power Five conferences last week voted to ban off-campus trips for practice during any vacation period outside a sport’s season. The new rule goes into effect in August. Michigan didn’t announce the dates of the trip Monday, but said it would be after als in April. (AP) winter finals

Shanahan expected to get job with 49ers

Redefine Your Path to Success with a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree

NFL This has been a long time coming, but it finally appears that Kyle Shanahan is about to become an NFL head coach. Shanahan, the Falcons’ offensive coordinator, is considered the front-runner to become the 49ers coach when his duties to Atlanta end after the Super Bowl. Now 37, he has spent 13 years as an NFL assistant coach. He’s worked in Tampa Bay, Houston, Washington and Cleveland, but things have really clicked in his second year with Atlanta. Shanahan’s offense put together its latest masterful performance — crushing the Packers 44-21 in the NFC championship game Sunday. It isn’t yet clear how his job with the 49ers might shake out. San Francisco also has a general manager vacancy, and Shanahan could get some control over personnel, too. He is expected to interview with the 49ers on Friday in Atlanta, according to Bay Area reports, but can’t be officially hired until after Super Bowl LI on Feb. 5 in Houston. Shanahan is not expected to work with his

father, Mike, as he did with the Redskins, when he was offensive coordinator and his father was head coach. The elder Shanahan isn’t expected to take a formal role with the 49ers, NFL Network reported over the weekend. In Atlanta, Shanahan benefited from a partnership with quarterback Matt Ryan. Shanahan would take over a team that went 2-14 and attracted controversy with the national anthem protests of quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Shanahan moving west would create speculation about whether Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins might join him there one day. Mike Shanahan, who drafted

Cousins in the fourth round, has said he believes Cousins is a Super Bowl-caliber passer. Cousins has praised Kyle’s “creativity.” Cousins had a seat in the Georgia Dome for Sunday’s game and wrote on Instagram that he was “watching two of the best in the world do what they do & taking notes to make it to this game next year -score a lot of points!” Shanahan, who would become one of the NFL’s youngest head coaches, told reporters after interviewing with the Broncos that he feels ready to move up. “I definitely do,” he said. “I think I have been.” CINDY BOREN

COLLEGE BASKETBALL Maryland junior guard Melo Trimble missed Monday’s practice because of an illness, and it was unclear if he would be able to play tonight against visiting Rutgers (7, BTN), coach Mark Turgeon said. Trimble, who in three seasons has never missed a game, reported to the team’s facility Monday before being sent home. “We’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” Turgeon said. Trimble is coming off one of his strongest performances of the season in an 84-76 win

Thursday at Iowa, in which he scored 20 points with five assists and made two of his five 3-pointers in the final three minutes. Maryland (17-2, 5-1), which is tied for first place in the Big Ten with Wisconsin, is 4-0 on the road this season and moved up to No. 22 in the AP poll Monday. Trimble, who dealt with back and hamstring issues in his first two seasons, was limited to a season-low 14 minutes against Rutgers last year after suffering a hamstring injury. Turgeon didn’t seem concerned with Trimble’s status Monday, but

Center Michal Cekovsky missed the past six games with an ankle injury and is questionable for tonight. Guard Dion Wiley is questionable with a back injury and has missed four games. MLS Ian Harkes was too young in the 1990s to capture memories of his father in a D.C. United uniform. Videos, photos and stories have filled in the blanks. The ties that bind father and son to the MLS club, however, have run constant through the years. And with a signature, Ian has followed in John’s determined footsteps. On Monday, about 20 years after his father captained the first MLS Cup championship team, Ian Harkes became a second-generation United midfielder. With a multiyear contract finalized over the weekend, the Gonzaga High and Wake Forest grad reported to RFK Stadium for training camp. The Harkeses are the seventh MLS father-son connection. Alex and Teal Bunbury were the first (2010).

Ian Harkes, 21, won the Hermann Trophy this past season as college soccer’s best player, guiding the Demon Deacons to the national championship game. As a former United academy pupil, he was exempt for the MLS draft Jan. 13 and eligible for a D.C. homegrown contract. Born in England in the last year of his father’s six-year run there, Ian also wanted to explore opportunities abroad. He trained for about a week with the under-23 squad at Derby County, a second-flight club that employed his father for two seasons. On short notice, Derby wasn’t prepared to offer a contract. Fulham, a second-tier club in London, had also been willing to take a look, but by then Ian knew what he wanted to do: sign with United. STEVEN GOFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Tap your primal instinct RACES “It takes a special breed of person,” says Janice “JJ” McClean as she watches veterans of NBC’s popular obstacle course show “American Ninja Warrior,” along with “Ninja” hopefuls, scale a 14-foot-3-inch warped wall, a concave structure that mimics one on the show. Next, they take turns walking across a slackline — a strap tied to two poles. “It’s just a typical night in here,” McLean says of CrossFit Loudoun and Northern Virginia Ninja, which she co-owns with Casey Passafaro. In its first year, NoVa Ninja has become a destination for people seeking more than a standard weightlifting or cardio challenge. The idea to incorporate ninjastyle training came from Passafaro, who wanted a place to train to get on the show — a goal she accomplished in May. Obstacle course racing, or OCR, is a $500 million business, according to Running USA. “American Ninja Warrior” has

Competitors typically pay about $50 to $150 to slog through mud, climb vertical walls, wade through ice baths and even get electric shocks, all while covering several miles as fast as they can. “I think there are a lot of forces driving this phenomenon,” says Scott Keneally, writer and director of “The Rise of the Sufferfests,” a 2016 documentary that studies such races. “Part of it is the narcissism epidemic — the rise of social media, the ability to brag and look like a hero on Facebook. … But for

fears — and overcoming them. For example, participants in 2017 runnings of the Tough Mudder, an OCR that started in 2010 and attracts 10,000 to 15,000 participants per event, will tackle Augustus Gloop, which “requires participants to climb up a 12-foot vertical tube while water is pouring down on top of their head,” says Nolan Kombol, Tough Mudder’s director of product design. Why would someone not only willingly try that, but pay to do it? “People want to conquer their fears and do something that they maybe thought they never would have done,” says Tanya PrewittWhite, an assistant professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago. That physical-mental combination is at the heart of OCR’s appeal, says Joe De Sena, cofounder of Spartan Race, which has 180 events a year. Humans want to “get outside, to start breathing heavy, to sweat, to do all the things that we don’t do anymore,” he says. “We have such easy lives, where everything is right at our fingertips, that you just don’t feel alive.” STEPHANIE

Men, take a stand New research might push you to move around at your desk job — especially if you’re a man. In a study published last month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers looked at the amount of time 4,486 men and 1,845 women spent sitting and doing physical activity and examined obesity among participants, ages 20 to 79, by measuring waistlines and body fat percentages. No matter the metric, the more men sat, the likelier they were to be obese, even when fitness levels were adjusted. While 41 percent of men reported sitting three-fourths of the day, only 13 percent of women said the same. Even women who sat for longer periods had lower levels of obesity than men. Q. I am in a circle of friends

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

My kids’ passion: Hating each other Q. My two children genuinely hate each other. My son is 25 and my daughter 23, and the competition, sniping and cruelty they show to each other has not improved. They have a good relationship with us individually but they act like being in the same room together is terrible. They are mean to each other in ways I have never seen them be mean to others. SAD PARENT OF ADULTS It is a good sign that they are capable of having loving and respectful relationships with other people, which makes me think this problem with each other is extremely deep-rooted, or indicative of a serious incident you’re not aware of. Sit them down individually in a relaxed context. Frame your discussion as asking what you can do to help them get along

better, instead of calling them on the carpet for being pains in the arse (as right as you’d be). If they still don’t improve, and show no motivation to work on it, at least set boundaries for civility in your home. I know I cannot hang out with them as much anymore, but I feel hurt and jealous that I am not invited as much. I see their gatherings on social media and feel angry and sad, even though if they had asked me, I would have said no. How do I stop these feelings? FEELING LEFT OUT Instead of trying to outlaw an emotion, do something about what’s causing it. Start by acknowledging the problem: You’re human, and so you miss your friends and feel left out and frustrated that you can’t hang out as before. Carve out more time with your friends on terms that work for all of you — Netflix at your house after the kids are down (or semi-down!), forays to coffee or pedicures or concerts or book clubs that are planned long in advance. And put some stimulus control in place — if social media is making diaper duty more arduous or making you feel more lonely, set limits on the duration and frequency of your online jaunts. Lewis’ civil rights book gets four literary prizes

AWARDS

‘Zoolander 2’ leads Razzie nominations

BOOKS Rep. John Lewis is having quite a run in the literary world. The American Library Association announced Monday that the Georgia Democrat received four prizes for “March: Book Three,” the last of a graphic trilogy about his civil rights activism and the winner last fall of the National Book Award. The latest honors for “March,” a collaboration among Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell, include the Coretta Scott King award for best book written for children and young adults by an African-American; the Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in young adult literature; the Robert F. Sibert award for most distinguished children’s informational book; and the YALSA award for excellence in young adult nonfiction. The book also jumped high on best-seller lists recently after a harsh public exchange between Lewis and President Donald Trump, whose legitimacy Lewis has challenged. The awards were announced during the library association’s midwinter meeting in Atlanta, where Lewis is based. The congressman’s late wife, Lillian Miles Lewis, was a librarian at Atlanta University.

Universe still wonders who Stacey Dash is

Human sticks to resolution Channing Tatum posted a video on Twitter revealing his progress since he started learning how to play the piano. The actor vowed to “learn new things” as part of his New Year’s resolution. “I’m going to shame myself into getting better by showing you where I’m at,” he said. “Two and a half weeks into learning how to play the piano. Bear with me, this is going to be brutal.” He then proceeded to play part of Beethoven’s “Fur Elise.” (EXPRESS)

Fox News has declined to renew Stacey Dash’s contract as a contributor, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The network told the publication that Dash, who debuted on Fox News in 2014, has been off the air since September. Dash is most known for her acting role in 1995’s “Clueless,” though in recent years she’s been known for her controversial opinions. In 2015, she was temporarily suspended from Fox News for cursing in an on-air tirade about then-President Obama’s stance on terrorism. In 2016, she stirred controversy for saying transgender people should “go in the bushes” instead of in restrooms and for calling for an end to Black History Month. (EXPRESS)

‘Thank you to everyone except Aaron’s family!’ After the Packers lost Sunday, Olivia Munn, the girlfriend of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, posted a photo of a handwritten note on Instagram thanking the team and fans. “They faced a lot of adversity on and off the field, but battled to get this far,” it read. “Adversity” could be a nod to Rodgers’ feud with his family, from whom he’s reportedly estranged.
