SENATORS: WHOM WILL

YOU

STAND WITH?

W2 | EXPRESS | 01.31.2017 | TUESDAY

Teachers, parents, students and community members are joining together across the country to stand up for great neighborhood public schools.

Will senators stand with us or with Betsy DeVos?

The new president has nominated Betsy DeVos for education secretary— a position that is dedicated to strengthening and improving education for the students in our country. In addition to DeVos’ lack of experience and qualifications for the job, she has shown great hostility toward public education in her work as a lobbyist. What’s more, rather then ensure all parents have great public school choices for their kids, her record in Michigan has hurt, not helped, children, and has failed to reflect the people’s will. In 2000, DeVos bankrolled a multimillion-dollar ballot initiative to create private voucher schools in Michigan, and voters rejected it by more than a 2-to-1 margin. Then she used her wealth to defund public education in Michigan and create for-profit charter schools across the state. What was the result? While the charter operators made a buck, student performance declined. According to the Detroit Free Press, 75 percent of all

schools in the state perform better than the state’s charter schools. Nearly half of Michigan’s charter schools rank in the bottom of America’s schools, and its charters lag behind state averages in math (84 percent) and reading (80 percent). And a yearlong investigation revealed rampant problems in the state’s for-profit charter schools: corruption, cronyism, poor performance and lack of accountability. That’s why communities came together in more than 200 cities this month to oppose DeVos’ nomination and stand up for our students and their public schools. The Senate has heard from tens of thousands opposing her nomination. Parents, teachers, superintendents, civil rights leaders, the National PTA, education school deans, charter school advocates, and even students and alumni from her alma mater, oppose her. We are asking senators to stand up for our kids and public schools by rejecting her nomination.

The American Federation of Teachers is a union of 1.6 million professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. We are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work our members do.

It’s clear that this wasn’t an example of fake news: A Canadian news crew getting video last week of the ubiquitous potholes in Newfoundland and Labrador ran into a predictable problem — a pothole gave their van a flat. The journalists had to call a tow truck, like many of the drivers whose complaints had helped alert the news crew. Public works officials said the massive potholes were caused by heavy freezing rain, UPI reported. (EXPRESS)

Yeager, a self-employed writer, and his wife plan to spend the coming year roaming the globe in search of a new home where they will live for four years. Or possibly eight. “Trumping out,” Yeager calls it. Sort of like extended political camping. “When the devastation of the election hit,” he says, “we thought, ‘Let’s just leave and travel, travel, travel and see where it takes us.’ ” Remember those celebrities who were going to quit the country if Trump was elected? When they travel, they spend $100 a day. Or less — less being a mantra. “I am violently opposed to debt,” Yeager says. After the election, the Yeagers spent a month in Ireland, their first visit. They liked it very much. So, Ireland is on the list of places to land. “I’m committed to being out of the country for just as long as we can,” Yeager says. “I don’t see us coming back on a permanent basis.” That is, until Trump is out of the White House. “What we’re trying to escape is the disappointment of my homeland.” Yeager finds that he’s happiest when “I can’t speak the language of the country where I am. Metro board mulls ways to avoid cuts, fare hikes TRANSPORTATION Metro has identified two sources of money that could be used to prevent some of the proposed fare hikes and service cuts being considered to close a $290 million shortfall. The agency’s governing board will need to decide whether, or how, to use those funds. One option involves a maneuver the board used last year — and a practice members pledged to curb: using federal grant money earmarked for capital investments to pay for preventive maintenance. Using the grant money would

lessen the amount available for longer-term investments. And federal lawmakers have warned the agency against the practice. The second source comes from $23 million in costs dedicated to railcar spare parts that could be pushed to the capital budget, another short-term fix that would still need to be paid for in the long run. Board members said they’ve recently received an OK from the Federal Transit Administration clarifying that preventive maintenance falls within the bounds of how Metro is allowed

to use grant money, and that it’s a common practice among federal transit agencies. The budget for the current fiscal year includes $95 million in grant money for operating expenses; General Manager Paul Wiedefeld’s proposed budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 cuts the amount to $60 million. Some board members say if the amount is increased to $80 million or $90 million, it would free up enough to allow them to pare back some fare increases and service cuts Wiedefeld has proposed.

A bobcat that escaped from its enclosure at the National Zoo is perfectly capable of surviving in the wild and would find plenty to eat in a leafy park nearby, zoo officials said Monday. The 25-pound female bobcat, believed to be about 7 years old, was found to be missing Monday morning when she didn’t show up for breakfast. At the zoo, the bobcat is known as Ollie. The bobcat poses no danger to the public, the zoo said. While no bobcats are known to live in Rock Creek Park, which surrounds the zoo, bobcats are native to the mid-Atlantic region. “We know that she is absolutely capable of surviving, even thriving, in this area,” said Brandie Smith, the zoo’s associate director of animal care. “We are prepared for the eventuality that she is not recaptured.” (AP)

Ex-Md. school aide pleads guilty to child porn charges PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY A former elementary school aide and community choir director instructed children on how to perform sex acts while he videotaped them in a band room at a Prince George’s County school, according to details of his guilty plea. Deonte Carraway, 23, entered the plea Monday in U.S. District Court almost one year after his Feb. 4 arrest in the wide-reaching sex abuse case that roiled the county and involves at least 23

children as young as 9. P rosecutors said Carraway supplied children with cellphones Carraway and coerced them into recording sexual activities using the devices. Recordings and alleged sex acts occurred at Judge Sylvania W. Woods Sr. Elementary School, in homes, a church and a government building, and at a public pool, police said.

He faces 60 to 100 years in prison as part of a plea agreement that a judge will consider at his sentencing hearing set for June 5. Obama praises protests

IMMIGRATION

Numbers show impact of ban in U.S. and abroad

Despite criticism and legal battles, White House downplays anger over travel ban

President Trump’s travel ban has led to a massive response from people in the U.S. and around the world. Here are four key numbers surrounding the order. (EXPRESS/AP/TWP)

POLITICS President Trump continued Monday to adamantly defend his immigration order temporarily banning entry into the United States for migrants from seven Muslim-majority countries and refugees from around the world, despite mounting criticism and legal challenges. Even as the White House remained defiant, former president Barack Obama became the latest high-profile voice to weigh in on the issue, endorsing the protests that have emerged nationwide and rejecting his successor’s attempt to link the travel ban to the Obama administration. Obama feels “heartened by the level of engagement taking place in communities around the country,” Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for the former president, said in a statement. Alluding to Trump’s questionable claim that his ban was based on Obama administration decisions, Lewis said that the former president “fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion.” On Capitol Hill, Democrats sought to capitalize on the growing public outcry and said they were hoping to pass legislation rescinding the ban and planning to delay confirmation votes for Trump’s Cabinet nominees. State Department diplomats have been circulating a document objecting to Trump’s order since he announced it Friday. According to a draft version of the memo, the dissenters say the ban will not deter attacks on American soil, but will generate ill will toward U.S. citizens. Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said the situation at airports remains “chaotic and fluid” and lawyers are “having trouble independently verifying anything because the government will not provide full access to all the detainees.” On Monday, in what could be the first volley in an intense legal battle, Bob Ferguson, Washington state’s attorney general, said he plans to file a federal lawsuit seeking an immediate halt to the order’s implementation. Ferguson is the first state official to declare plans to file such a suit, but he may not be the last. A day earlier, Ferguson joined 15 other state attorneys general in calling the measure unconstitutional. Eric Schneiderman, the New York attorney general who joined in that message, is

The lawsuit characterizes the ban as a first step in fulfilling Trump’s campaign promise to impose “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” until the government “can figure out what is going on.” White House officials have played down the anger and chaos over the order, holding a briefing with reporters Sunday evening to argue that the rollout was “a massive success story.” On Monday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer defended the ban and its implementation. “You don’t know when the next attack’s coming,” he said. “And so the best you can do is to get ahead of it because if you wait, you’re gonna be reacting. Iraqi lawmakers Monday called for banning Americans from entering the country after President Trump signed an executive order suspending immigration from Iraq and citizens of six other Muslim majority nations. QUEBEC CITY The suspect in a terrorist attack against Muslims that left six dead at a Quebec City mosque was charged Monday with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. Canada’s prime minister called Sunday night’s shooting, which took place during evening prayers at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre, an act of terrorism against Muslims. More than 50 people were at the mosque when the shooting erupted. In addition to the six who died, five were in critical condition and 12 others suffered minor injuries, the University of Quebec Hospital Centre said Monday. HEALTH Even in your 70s and beyond, simple activities including surfing the web, playing bridge and socializing can stave off mental decline, new research says. Benefits were greatest in computer users and in those without a gene variation linked with Alzheimer’s disease. But even among seniors with that trait, mental decline that sometimes precedes dementia was less common among those who engaged in mindstimulating activities. The study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Neurology, looked at five types of activities: computer use; making crafts; playing games including chess or bridge; going to movies or other types of socializing; and reading books. The idea was to see if these activities could help prevent mild cognitive impairment. Almost 2,000 adults aged 70 to 93 without memory problems participated. The subjects, who lived in Minnesota, were tested for the condition in mental exams at the beginning and every 15 months for about four years. In that time, 456 study participants developed the mild impairment. Analysis found a protective effect from each activity except for reading books. Study participants who engaged in any of the other activities at least once weekly were 20 percent to 30 percent less likely to develop the condition over the four years than those who never did those activities. president signed a blizzard of executive orders — although Sessions had advocated going faster. The senator lobbied for a “shock-and-awe” period of executive action that would rattle Congress, impress Trump’s base and catch his critics unaware, according to officials. Trump opted for a slightly slower pace because he wanted to maximize news coverage by spreading out directives over several weeks. Trump makes his own decisions, but Sessions is the rare lawmaker who shares his impulses. “Sessions brings heft to the president’s gut instincts,” said Roger Stone, a longtime Trump adviser. He compared Sessions to John Mitchell, who was attorney general under Richard Nixon but served a more intimate role as a counselor to the president: “Nixon is not a guy given to taking advice, but Mitchell was probably Nixon’s closest adviser.” PHILIP RUCKER AND

BUSINESS President Trump signed an order Monday aimed at cutting regulations on businesses, saying that agencies should eliminate at least two regulations for each new one. The order also said that the cost of any new regulation should be offset by eliminating regulations with the same costs to businesses. The impact of the order was difficult to assess, and it could be hard to implement under current law. Any effort to scrap a regulation triggers its own process of draft rules, comment periods and regulation rewriting. That process can be subject to litigation. At the least, Trump’s proposal could add a timeconsuming requirement for any new congressional legislation. “This will be the largest ever cut by far in terms of regulations,” Trump said. “If you have a regulation you want, number one, we’re not going to approve it because it’s already been approved probably in 17 different forms. But if we do, the only way you have a chance is we have to knock out two regulations for every new regulation.” Some experts on government policy said Trump’s formulation made little sense. Fiscal policy expert William Gale of the Brookings Institution said, “The number of regulations is not the key. It’s how onerous regulations are. This seems like a totally nonsensical constraint to me.”

POLITICS In jagged black strokes, President Trump’s signature was scribbled onto a catalogue of executive orders over the past 10 days that translated the hard-line promises of his campaign into the policies of his government. The directives bore Trump’s name, but another man’s fingerprints were also on nearly all of them: Jeff Sessions. The early days of the Trump presidency have rushed a nationalist agenda long on the fringes of American life into action — and Sessions, the quiet Alabaman who long cultivated those ideas as a Senate backbencher, has become a singular power in this new Washington. Sessions’ ideology is driven by a visceral aversion to what he calls “soulless globalism,” a term used on the extreme right to convey a perceived threat to the United States from free trade, international alliances and the immigration of non-whites. And in spite of many reservations among Republicans about that worldview, Sessions — whose 1986 nomination for a federal judgeship was doomed by accusations of racism that he denied — is finding little resistance to his nomination in Congress. Sessions’ nomination as Trump’s attorney general is scheduled to be considered today by the Senate Judiciary Committee, but his influence extends far beyond the Justice Department. From immigration and health care to national security and trade, Sessions is the intellectual godfather of the president’s policies. Sessions’ reach extends throughout the White House, with his aides and allies accelerating the president’s most dramatic moves, including the ban on refugees and citizens from seven

mostly Muslim nations. The author of many of Trump’s executive orders is senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, a Sessions confidant who was mentored by him and who spent the weekend overseeing the government’s implementation of the refugee ban. The tactician turning Trump’s agenda into law is deputy chief of staff Rick Dearborn, Sessions’ longtime chief of staff in the Senate. The mastermind behind Trump’s incendiary brand of populism is chief strategist Stephen Bannon, who as chairman of the Breitbart website promoted Sessions for years. In an email to The Washington Post, Bannon described Sessions as “the clearinghouse for policy and philosophy. “In America and Europe, working people are reasserting their right to control their own destinies,” Bannon wrote. “Jeff Sessions has been at the forefront of this movement for years.”

Sessions’ influence There are limits to Jeff Sessions’ influence. He has not persuaded President Trump — so far, at least — to eliminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, under which children brought to the U.S. illegally are allowed to stay in the country. Sessions has also been leading the internal push for Trump to nominate William Pryor Jr., his deputy when he was Alabama attorney general and now a federal appeals court judge, for the Supreme Court. While Pryor is on Trump’s list of three finalists, it is unclear whether he will get the nod. (TWP)

Trump himself, who is never shy about showering praise on his loyalists, speaks of Sessions with reverence. At a luncheon the day before his inauguration, Trump singled him out as “the legendary Jeff Sessions.” Sessions helped devise Trump’s first-week strategy, in which the

Fight over DeVos heats up POLITICS More than 300 state lawmakers from all 50 states have added their voices to the chorus objecting to President Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos as education secretary. The lawmakers, who are overwhelmingly Democrats, voiced their opposition in a letter to U.S. senators ahead of a Senate committee’s vote on her nomination scheduled today. The state lawmakers argue that DeVos, who has no professional experience in education, is unqualified for the job and that

the charter schools and voucher programs she has worked to create and expand have undermined public schools, which they see as critical civic institutions that serve the majority of students. The legislators wrote, “We are deeply concerned that Ms. DeVos will bring her lack of experience with public education, her failure to understand key federal laws, and her track record of undermining public education at the state level with her to Washington.” The letter was coordinated by SiX Action, a group that has ties to labor and pushes progressive policies within states. The letter is just one of the latest volleys in what has become a partisan battle over DeVos’

confirmation. America Rising Squared — an arm of the Republican super PAC America Rising DeVos — on Mond ay launched an online advertising campaign defending DeVos. The 30-second video accuses Democrats of bowing to the will of teachers unions and “playing politics as usual” with DeVos’ nomination. It will be seen on social media platforms nationally but will target residents of West Virginia, Montana, North Dakota, Missouri and Indiana. “By trying to block this extremely well-qualified nominee, Senate Democrats are once again putting the interests of their big

labor allies ahead of the needs of millions of American kids trapped in the failing status quo,” said Brian Rogers, executive director of the super PAC. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions is scheduled to vote on DeVos’ nomination today, with a full Senate vote expected in the coming weeks. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., said last week on MSNBC’s “Rachel Maddow Show” that virtually all Democrats will vote against DeVos’ nomination. But she appears very likely to be confirmed: Republicans hold the Senate majority, and no GOP senators have indicated they intend to oppose her.

Atlanta’s quiet assassin In a league full of divas, Jones leaves dancing to other wide receivers

HOUSTON Every day she walked in the house, caked in chicken grease and exhaustion, and headed to the kitchen. Queen Marvin’s two sons watched this for years. Their mother spent nine hours working the fryer or the drivethru, so worn out that she was almost constantly sick, but so determined to provide that she returned home not to rest but to prepare them a proper supper. Her younger son, Julio Jones, was paying attention. Long before he was the Falcons’ best receiver, he learned that a hard day’s work is an expectation.

It is one reason why, according to people involved in Jones’ rise, the 27-year-old is seen as the emotional nerve center of a team headed to the Super Bowl, as well as a quiet assassin. After some of the most dazzling catches — such as a sideline touchdown grab in the NFC championship game — Jones avoids over-the-top celebration and instead calmly hands the ball to an official. It’s the way he’s always done it. Jones never said much. When college recruiters came to Foley High (Ala.) to visit an athlete whom Rivals ranked as the nation’s top receiver, Jones barely spoke. High school coach Todd Watson said recruiters would call him and ask whether Jones had any interest in their programs at all. If he did, he wasn’t

Maximizing his talent At Alabama, Julio Jones impressed coaches with his work ethic. He rarely had to be reminded to block until the whistle. At practices, he got up after being tackled and sprinted to the end zone — because his idol, Jerry Rice, used to do the same. draft, Atlanta traded five picks to Cleveland to move up 21 spots and get him at No. 6 overall. It was called bold, but it worked. Jones has averaged at least 100 yards receiving per game in each of the past four seasons. With nine catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the NFC championship, Jones helped propel the Falcons into their first Super Bowl in 18 years. All eyes will be on Houston this weekend, and on Friday a mother will join the party. Marvin will leave the three-bedroom house Jones bought for her in 2011 and drive the Cadillac he gave her to the airport in Pensacola, Fla. Eventually, she’ll arrive in Houston, where this time Jones will take care of dinner. KENT BABB (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Porter finds hot spots to help Wizards climb JANUARY 27 – FEBRUARY 5

NBA Otto Porter Jr. used to give no thought to his location on the court when he fired up shots during two seasons at Georgetown. That changed when the small forward struggled as a rookie with the Wizards, who drafted him third overall after he was named Big East Player of the Year in 2013. In his first year in Washington, Porter played 8.6 minutes per game, averaged just 2.1 points and shot an abysmal 19 percent from 3-point range. This season, with an assist from the analytics department, he’s averaging a career-best 14.4 points. Entering tonight’s home game against the Knicks (7, CSN), he’s hitting 46.8 percent of his 3-pointers — the best mark in the NBA. Porter, 23, has been successful in part because he’s learned to locate his “green” and “red” spots during games. “Our video guys do a good job of giving us film on where we are [on the court]. Green is good and red is kind of your hot spot,” Porter said. “I know the corner shot is going to be there.” Porter first got input from

former coach Randy Wittman’s staff, but he’s blossomed under Scott Brooks. Last season, Porter cracked double figures for the first time, averaging 11.6 points a game. Entering tonight, he has started every game for the Wizards (27-20) while shooting 53.5 percent from the field. “Otto has, I think, developed into the most consistent shooter in the league from the 3,” Brooks said after Porter was 6 of 8 from 3-point range against Memphis earlier this month. “Every night it seems like he has it.” The 6-foot-9 forward said he doesn’t feel he’s necessarily a

better fit in Brooks’ system compared to Wittman’s, but he’s taken advantage of a defense-first mentality that leads to fast breaks. During Porter’s first two seasons, he attracted the label of draft bust from some local radio hosts. Now he’s reaching his potential and has helped the Wizards surge into fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Porter said he doesn’t feel vindicated because he never paid attention to the noise in the first place. “I don’t really focus on that much,” he said. “I know what I’m capable of. I know what I bring to the table.” DAVID DRIVER (FOR EXPRESS)

Trump’s ban hurts ballers UNITED ARAB EMIRATES President Trump’s executive order barring people from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the U.S. has notably created difficulties for some foreign athletes playing in America. The consequences of that order have now reached two American basketball players working in Iran. Joseph Jones and J.P. Prince, who are teammates in Iran’s Super League, are “stranded” in Dubai, according to their agent, Eric Fleisher. They traveled to the United Arab Emirates to take a break from the season, but after Trump signed his order Friday, Iran retaliated by tightening

its borders to U.S. citizens. Fleisher told AP on Monday that Americans with valid visas have been allowed to re-enter Iran, but the visas for Prince and Jones expired because the team didn’t manage them “properly.”

Jones, 30, played college basketball at Texas A&M. Prince, 29, played at Tennessee and Arizona. They play for Azad University Tehran. Fleisher said it is usually the club’s responsibility to arrange visas for players. If the players can’t renew their visas, they can’t complete the Super League season. Fleisher told The Vertical that both would stand to lose as much as six figures in income if that happened. If Jones and Prince can’t return to the Iranian league, they will have trouble latching on with other teams in Asia and Europe. “It’s a difficult time of year, because you’re already well through the season, and you’re running up against transfer deadlines [for signing foreign players],” Fleisher explained.

No pain, no gain? As millennials flock to high-intensity workouts, doctors are seeing a trend of hip problems INJURIES Physical therapist Karena Wu couldn’t help notice a recent trend in patients visiting her New York City office. Many were under age 35, enjoyed strenuous workouts and were suffering immense hip pain. These millennials had pushed themselves in endurance races such as the Tough Mudder or weekly CrossFit and metabolic conditioning classes that placed wear and tear on their bodies, she says. And with little downtime between routines or adherence to proper form, they were putting the long-term health of their hips at risk. “A lot of millennials are doing all of these high-intensity exercises that are great for the mental and physical components of health, but if you’re not as conditioned as you think, you’re going to put excessive stress on the soft tissue and the joint,” says Wu, owner of ActiveCare Physical Therapy. It’s not uncommon for active

young adults to experience some joint pain, but orthopedic specialists worry that regimens that rely on heavy weightlifting or intense aerobic exercises are causing more hip injuries. There are no definitive studies that correlate the two, but research in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy says high-intensity activities appear to increase the risk of hip osteoarthritis. What’s more, specialists at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center have reported a rise in cases of young adults with femoral acetabular impingement, a condition that occurs when the ball of the femur fails to fit securely into the hip socket. High levels of activity, they say, can cause the plate to fuse in an abnormal shape and result in a hip impingement. Shane Nho, an orthopedic surgeon at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, recalls a spike in hip, shoulder and knee injuries as CrossFit gyms sprung up several years ago. These days, he

says, patients are coming in with hip ailments from high-intensity interval training, and even some barre classes. Neuromuscular imbalances, or weakness in certain muscle groups, are often the root cause of the pain that Nho’s patients experience, he says. If patients come in as soon as they start feeling discomfort, it’s easier to connect them with the right physical therapist to improve their stability and flexibility. A weight-room regular since high school, Niranjan Nagwekar, 28, figured there was no need to

spend much time warming up before squatting 250 pounds. But as the New Yorker ramped up his lifting, he started feeling a deep pain in his left hip. “For the longest time, I thought I just had tight hip flexors, so I started stretching a little more, but the pain persisted,” he says. It turns out Nagwekar had developed a hip impingement. Doctors recommended surgery, but he decided to opt for physical therapy. Nagwekar became a patient five months ago at ActiveCare, where Wu has guided him through mobility exercises innvolving foam rolling, core connditioning and stretching with th resistance bands. “I’m back to about 80 perercent capacity,” Nagwekar says. ys. hat “Any kind of power lifting that requires dynamic movement nt of the hips takes me a little lonnger. Cook more: Creating and serving even the simplest of meals is a profound way of caring for yourself and your loved ones. Homemade meals tend to be more healthful than ones you purchase, because when you cook from scratch, you know exactly what you’re eating. Consider why you eat: Is it boredom? Stress? Loneliness? Anxiety? When you find yourself reaching for food or mindlessly browsing the contents of your refrigerator, get in the habit of asking yourself, “Am I hungry?” Let go of rigid rules: A nutritious diet allows for flexibility and shifts over time to suit your tastes and nutritional needs. Trying to find and follow a “perfect” eating plan is not only an exercise in futility, but it also often leads to all-or-nothing thinking: You’re either perfect or a failure. This can lead to feelings of shame, and shame is a lousy motivator for p positive change. g

Money is where I draw the line Q. Do you think couples need to combine money to have a

healthy marriage? I’m getting married in two months and we are considering keeping everything separate. He makes — and spends — a lot more than me, and I just feel more comfortable not getting annoyed by his spending. ON THE CUSP OF A LIFE TOGETHER A satisfying marriage means that you share your lives, your dreams, your plans and your setbacks. Many of these, like it or not, involve money. So, while the ins and outs of who has what account number may vary (and indeed, some couples find relief in having certain money in individual accounts), it’s nonetheless going to be counterproductive to take the stand that everything is separate.

This isn’t just because of dayto-day tediousness, though that’s significant (do you go halfsies on orange juice? The unexpected new roof?). Rather, it’s because of the mentality of marriage. Individual debt and unwise spending hold both of you back, and individual triumphs are something for a couple to celebrate, together. Why cut each other off from the joint experience?

through an awful time with his ex-wife, years of marriage counseling that did nothing. This has made him think all counselors and therapists are quacks. I have been seeing a therapist for problems with body image and eating. He found out and says I’m wasting my money and that his “goal” is to get me to stop. How do I get him to see that this is right for me? FRUSTRATED So, because he was in a marriage that was unworkable, an entire branch of health care must be fraudulent? (Hey, I’ve got spinach in my teeth. So dentistry must be a scam!) His stance is disturbing not just in its illogic, but also because he is trying to control the way you take care of yourself. How can he object to your doing something that you believe (and that studies agree) is good for your emotional health? And why would he want to? Being so bold as to make it a “goal” to thwart what you consider to be your mental health progress is, honestly, worrisome. You know therapy’s right for you. If he doesn’t trust you on that, you might use some of your therapy time to figure out if it’s the relationship that’s wrong. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Stoking our high anxieties A trio of novels jump on the fledgling ‘GoneGirl-on-a-Train’ genre BOOKS Girls have been present in mysteries ever since Nancy Drew drove her blue roadster into the genre in 1930. By the time Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” was published in English in 2008, girls were elbowing their way into thriller titles. Now, since the success of “Gone Girl ” and “The Girl on the Train,” women are popping up everywhere in suspense stories — and there’s no end in sight. Let’s call it the “Gone-Girl-on-a-Train” school of high-anxiety thriller. Just this month, we have “The Girl Before,” “Everything You Want Me to Be,” and “Her Every Fear” — novels that spin off the model made popular by Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins: female protagonists whose defining characteristic is a clinically defined psychological malady. Whether victims, villains and/or amateur detectives, these women are explicitly identified as suffering from anxiety disorders or displaying OCD behavior. They’re struggling with alcoholism or dependent on mood-regulating prescription drugs. Whatever the reason for the trend, this emphasis on character development through therapeutic labeling has crucial consequences for the thriller narrative. First, the world, always a scary place in suspense fiction, is made more so with characters who wrestle

Second, these “girls” tend to be more fragile than the prior generation that was shaped by the fiercer ethos of third-wave feminism. (“Dragon Tattoo’s” Lisbeth Salander roars to mind.) Take Kate Priddy in “Her Every Fear,” by Peter Swanson. She suffers from panic attacks, which she controls with prescription drugs and breathing exercises. In college, Kate’s former boyfriend stalked and terrorized her, ultimately locking her in a closet before he fatally shot himself. Later, when Kate moves to a new apartment, she learns the very first morning there that her neighbor was murdered. A male resident with a penchant for peeping (a la Rachel Watson in “Girl “Gir on a Train”) is a strong

suspect, but most readers won’t anticipate the Hitchcockian twists and turns of the tale. In “Everything You Want Me to Be,” by Mindy Mejia, teenager Hattie is our clinically unstable girl. Mejia takes us back to the time when Hattie began a relationship with Peter, a teacher whose marriage is crumbling. Like Nick and Amy of “Gone Girl,” Peter and his wife, Elsa, begin to falter as a couple when they relocate from the city to the country. As in that novel, this thriller tells us “Midwestern nice” often masks “Midwestern vice.” In JP Delaney’s “The Girl Before,” already optioned for a film by Ron Howard, the story hops between two women at different times who decide to lease an “austere” house in London designed by a “techno minimalist.”

Present-day Jane, our mentally unstable girl, has suffered a stillbirth and jumps at the chance to live in a house without memories. (Unplanned pregnancies, miscarriages, stillbirths, infertility and false pregnancies are rife in this genre.) But Jane soon becomes haunted by stories of the other girl, a former tenant named Emma who fell to her death. The book’s ending leads us to a final observation about these “Gone-Girl-on-a-Train” stories: Their narrative journeys are almost always more satisfying than their final destinations. Because these novels, even more than most suspense tales, are so plot-driven, their endings tend to collapse in damp exhaustion. The girls have been manipulated — and so have we. AWARDS In speech after fiery speech at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, winners struck a defiant tone against President Trump’s sweeping immigration ban aimed at seven predominantly Muslim nations. The SAG Awards culminated with the evening’s top honor — best movie ensemble — going to the cast of “Hidden Figures,” about African-American mathematicians who aided NASA’s space race. Co-star Taraji P. Henson accepted the award with the kind of pointed politics that have been more an aberration than a constant at Hollywood award shows. ‘’This story is about what happens when we put our differences aside and we come together as a human race,” Henson said. “We win. Love wins. Every time.” Perhaps the most moving speech came from Mahershala Ali, who won best supporting actor for his performance in “Moonlight.” Ali, who converted to Islam 17 years ago, said the film, about a shy, gay Miami boy’s life, held lessons of acceptance. “We see what happens when you persecute people,” Ali said. “They fold into themselves.” The most blistering speech was by David Harbour, who led the cast of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” to accept best ensemble in a TV drama series. “We will hunt monsters,” Harbour vowed in lengthy remarks that drew a standing ovation. “I can’t even say anymore whetherr this is the real @seanspicer or a satire account?? It’s too surreal.” @CHRISPA1975 tweets about yet another Twitter mishap from White House press secretary Sean Spicer. This time, Spicer retweeted a video o from satire/actual fake news site The Onion. The video, “5 Things to Know ow About Sean Spicer,” was captioned “Spicer’s role in the Trump administration tion will be to provide the American public with robust and clearly articulated d misinformation.” Spicer retweeted it with the comment: “You nailed it. Period!” It is unclear if he didn’t read to the end of the tweet, misunderstood ood what “misinformation” means or was partaking in his own satire.

“This is an easy #boycott. Hey @Starbucks do the right thing: instead of pandering to the left, hire our USVets.”

@DESUSNICE mocks ESPN host Sage Steele, who said on Instagram that she was “saddened” to see airport protests against Trump’s immigration ban disrupt travel plans (Steele missed a flight out of Los Angeles). She got a heaping of backlash for her tone-deaf post.

@DEBORAHTAYLOR87 uses #BoycottStarbucks, which took off after the company committed to hiring 10,000 refugees globally in the next five years. CEO Howard Schultz said the effort will start in the U.S., with a focus on refugees who have supported U.S. troops.
