GOP Unveils $30B in Budget Cuts MWi^_d]jed House Republicans want to slice more than $30 billion from agency budgets over the next several months, aiming to make good on their campaign pledge to return federal spending to 2008 levels. The figure represents a sharp reduction from President Obama’s most recent budget request, and Democrats have dismissed the proposal as draconian, arguing that cuts of that magnitude would harm critical government services. But Republicans won’t get everything they want. Democrats control the White House and the Senate, and even Republicans in the stoutly conservative House may have second thoughts when the magnitude of the cuts sinks in. The White House says the cuts could lead to widespread furloughs of federal employees and force vulnerable people off subsidized housing, reduce services in national

parks and slash aid to schools and local police and fire departments. The House Republicans are seeking to keep their campaign promise to cut $100 billion from domestic programs. The initial cuts would be approved over coming weeks as Congress wraps up the long-overdue 2011 budget; the second stage would come as the House GOP advances a fresh round of
spending bills for fiscal 2012. The hardest hit agencies would include the Food and Drug Administration, the IRS and the departments of Commerce, Housing and Urban Development and Agriculture, according to partial details released by the House Appropriations Committee. Congress’ own budget would be barely touched. (AP/ THE WASHINGTON POST )

The security footage of the man in a motorcycle helmet and a gun, dashing into a posh Las Vegas Strip casino and making off with $1.5 million in chips, went viral on the Internet. Now, after nearly two months, police believe they have their man — a former real estate broker who went bankrupt in 2009 and is related to a Sin City judge. Anthony M. Carleo, 29, was arrested early Thursday after
police accused him of being the bandit who grabbed the chips in the Dec. 14 brazen heist at the Bellagio hotel-casino. Police had said they believed the same man robbed the Suncoast casino in northwest Las Vegas early Dec. 8. “It goes without saying that as a father, I am devastated and heartbroken to Carleo see my son arrested under these circumstances, as is the rest of his family,” Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge George Assad said in a statement.
9^_YW]e :_]i Ekj <hec CWii_l[ Idemijehc
Carleo was arrested at the Bellagio as part of an undercover police investigation, a person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press. Jail records showed Carleo in custody under another name, Anthony M. Assad. It was not immediately clear whether Carleo had a lawyer. Stealing $1.5 million in chips isn’t like stealing $1.5 million, experts and police pointed out at the time of the robbery. Chips are unique to casino properties and are generally not interchangeable, although state regulations let casino companies redeem sister properties’ chips with some restrictions. OSK AR GARCIA (AP)

A Senate report on the Fort Hood shooting is sharply critical of the FBI, saying that top leaders must exercise more control over local field offices that failed to recognize warning signs that suggested the shooter was a threat. The report concluded that both the Defense Department and the FBI had sufficient information to detect that Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was a “ticking time bomb” who had been radicalized to violent Islamist extremism, but they failed to understand and act on it. (AP)

when protesters launched the biggest challenge ever to Mubarak’s 30-year rule has taken a dangerous turn over the past two days. The day after Mubarak went on television late Tuesday and refused to step down, thousands of his supporters attacked anti-government protesters in Tahrir Square, where they had held a peaceful vigil for days. An Egyptian official said about
3,000 police from southern Egypt were headed overnight to Tahrir, exactly a week after they battled anti-government protesters and then melted away from the streets for reasons that remain mysterious. Leila Fadel, the Washington Post’s Cairo bureau chief; Linda Davidson, a staff photographer; Sufian Taha, their translator and a longtime Washington Post employee; and Mansour el-Sayed Mohammed Abo Gouda, their Egyptian driver; were among those who have been detained, said Douglas Jehl, The Post’s foreign editor. Fear, Ruin but No Deaths Australians relieved monster cyclone was not a killer storm
SIMPLE SAVINGS
First came the terrifying roar, then a violent bang like something had exploded. “We gotta go!” David Leger screamed to his father as one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in Australia tore the roof off their home, sucking the air up and out of the room like a vacuum. Leger and his parents scrambled down the staircase, but the house shook violently, sending 83-yearold Francis Leger tumbling down the stairs. The family finally made it to a small room on the ground floor, where they rode out the ferocious storm that slammed into the already flood-ravaged Queensland state Thursday. “We’re just thankful,” David Leger said later as he slogged across the drenched carpet of their ruined home, water pooling around his sandaled feet. “This is only material.”

Thousands Protest Yemen Leader
ÉHkXo#=Wj[Ê
Tens of thousands of protesters Thursday staged unprecedented demonstrations against Yemen’s autocratic president, a key U.S. ally in battling Islamic militants, as unrest inspired by uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia spread further in the Arab world. The West is particularly concerned about instability in Yemen, home of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. U.S. counterterrorism officials are worried that Yemeni security forces will be more focused on protecting the government, allowing al-Qaeda to take advantage of any diminished scrutiny. Depending on public transit doesn’t have to derail your dating game No one likes a third wheel on a date, but a third rail can be crucial for singles seeking love in D.C., where a large percentage of residents don’t own a car. Having to rely on Metro to get around could certainly cramp your dating style — instead of “Pick you up at 8,” it’s “Meet you at Dupont” — but it doesn’t have to be a relationship deal-breaker, especially if you follow the advice from these experts. Dating coach James Norton, the 33-year-old co-owner of Professional Pickup (Professionalpickup. com), gave up his car years ago and hasn’t looked back. He can whisk ladies all over town without worrying about parking, and he’s found the ambiance of a Metro train — even a delayed one — is conducive to early relationship banter. “It’s a common gripe and an easy thing to talk about,” he says. But Norton knows the limits of relying on Metro. “If you want to go home together at the end of the night, you don’t want to wait for a train,” says Norton, who recommends you head up those escalators and hail a cab. Another potential problem is deciding to make a particular stop your rendezvous point, notes Michelle Jacoby, owner of DC Matchmaking & Coaching (Dcmatchmaking.com). Multiple exits can lead to confusion. Plus,

it would be a stretch to consider any of them particularly romantic. “At Bethesda, there’s usually a guy selling f lowers, and at some they have music. But others smell,” she says. Just because one of you has or both of you have opted to take Metro doesn’t mean etiquette goes out the window. Most locals have SmarTrip cards in their wallets, but it can’t hurt to propose to pay for
your date’s ride, Jacoby says. Even if that suggestion is rebuffed, one offer most women won’t refuse is an escort. “Just like you’d walk a woman to a car, you’d walk her to the Metro stop. Manners matter,” she says. That includes behaving yourself in front of others if you want to end the night with a goodbye kiss. Life and relationship coach Amy Schoen, who runs DC Dating Info (Dcdatinginfo.com), says comfort levels with PDA differ, but planting a long, sloppy one in the middle of a train car is likely to rub other riders the wrong way. So, if you’re parting ways and want to sneak in that smooch, at least attempt to get some privacy. “Maybe go to the end of the platform, behind a pole,” she says. “Be creative.” VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

Governor proposes wind energy, jobs in State of the State 7ddWfeb_i" CZ$ Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley asked lawmakers Thursday to create a $100 million venture capital fund, spur investment in offshore wind farms and ban the installation of septic systems in major new housing developments. O’Malley, a Democrat, pitched those and other priorities in his fifth State of the State speech, a 28-minute address in which he also acknowledged unpopular budget
choices ahead but urged a continued focus on education, job creation and the environment. “The state of our state is stronger today than two years ago. It is stronger than it was even a year ago. But better isn’t good enough,” O’Malley told a joint session of the General Assembly. The governor used the speech to make the case for several initiatives to bolster job creation, including the venture capital fund. The initiative, which O’Malley had previewed, provides incentives for insurance companies to pay their tax liabilities in advance, providing capital for other Maryland businesses.

Ike Memorial Plans Too Intrusive Commission rules designs would block views of the Capitol
7hb_d]jed
MWi^_d]jed Proposals for a Washington memorial to former president Dwight D. Eisenhower intrude too much on views of the Capitol. That’s the conclusion of a report on three proposed designs by architect Frank Gehry. The National Capital Planning Commission, which is overseeing the memorial’s construction, discussed the report at a meeting Thursday. The commission’s staff reviewed the designs and expressed support for one in particular that includes woven metal photo “tapestries.” But the staff also said all the designs, which include tall columns, intrude too much on views of the nearby Capitol. Some of the biggest applause during the speech accompanied another energy-related initiative: setting “reliability standards” for Pepco and other providers that could lead to fines if they are not met. “Moms and dads deserve better than to sit for days in freezing homes because the power hasn’t been restored,” O’Malley said. decade ago. The site, about four acres of land by the National Air and Space Museum, was selected in 2006. The design that emerged as Gehry’s favorite, and which won tentative but general approval from the commissioners, includes a giant colonnade running parallel to Independence Avenue, near the front face of the Lyndon B. Johnson Depart-
ment of Education Building. Hanging from the freestanding columns, each clad with limestone, will be a stainless-steel mesh, woven like fabric to depict an image pertinent to Eisenhower’s life and career. Two smaller “tapestries” will be hung closer to Independence Avenue. The plaza also will be planted with sycamore trees. (AP/ THE WASHINGTON POST )
Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton announced Thursday that the state no longer plans to build high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes on a six-mile stretch of I-395 inside the Capital Beltway, the planned construction of which has been the subject of a contentious lawsuit filed by Arlington County against the state. Instead, the state will embark on a series of ot her projects designed to ease traffic in the I-95/I-395 corridor. The plans include launching an environmental review process to build HOV/HOT lanes on I-95 from Garrisonville Road in Stafford County to Edsall Road in Fairfax, and link those lanes directly to new I-495 high-occupancy toll lanes already under construction. F7O :?HJ 8[ij 8ko0 Odd couple Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne will star in the electronics seller’s Super Bowl debut in the third quarter that promotes a new program in which Best Buy will buy back electronics when customers decide to upgrade. The ad’s still under wraps, but pairing the teen idol and the prince of darkness certainly fires the imagination.

Advertisers expand the field to score a big victory during the Super Bowl D[m Oeha
The Super Bowl commercial blitz is extending beyond the usual talking babies and office chimps to engage viewers online and get more for advertisers’ $3 millionplus investment. Marketers are using every trick in the playbook to dominate the buzz before the game and long afterward, too. The gimmicks include online contests, a car “race” powered by Twitter mentions, and a secret new level of a hit iPhone game. And, of course, Justin Bieber. The goal is to build buzz, not get lost in the 42 minutes of Super Bowl ad time, and get cheap or free exposure when viewers watch again on YouTube. “Nowadays, you’ve got to get more out of your investment than 110 million viewers watching a 60-second spot,” said Steve Cannon, head of marketing for Mercedes-Benz USA, which developed a pregame race among five teams headed for the Super Bowl. The racers buy gas
based on the number of times they are tweeted and retweeted. Advertisers have bought up all the commercial time on Fox’s broadcast. Last year, space was still available near game time, but for this year’s contest, it was gone by October. Compa nies covet t he Super Bowl audience because it is huge and because viewers are paying attention. As people spend more time on computers and smartphones, and

browse among 500 cable channels, it’s perhaps the only broadcast that allows advertisers to reach such a broad audience. But standing out in an increasingly crowded bowl ad lineup takes more than a funny gag or celebrity of the moment. “Before, everyone asked, ‘What was the best spot?’ But now, people are broadening their idea of what that means,” said Steve Slivka, chief creative officer of Colossal Squid Industries, a digital ad agency in Chicago. GoDaddy.com was almost unheard of six years ago. Then it ran an ad during Super Bowl XXXIX spoofing Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction,” in which a busty woman appears before a censorship board and a strap breaks on her skimpy top. The spot was so racy that Fox yanked a second schuled airing during the game. But now, GoDaddy’s ads are almost as eagerly awaited as the halftime show. (AP)

7 <;;B?D= Super Bowl QBs know when to use their legs to make crucial plays Fhe <eejXWbb Dropping back to pass, eyes aimed downfield, Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger seems to have radar scanning the area around him. Without even looking, he knows when defenders are closing in and from which direction. Once he “feels” their presence, Roethlisberger takes off — not sprinting, but more like getting out of their way. He buys enough time to complete a pass or simply avoid a sack. Even if someone hits him, he’s so big that defenders tend to bounce off. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers relies on “feel,” too. But when his intuition tells him to get moving, he’s looking for somewhere to go. Swift and agile, Rodgers will juke would-be tacklers and set up blocks that might spring him for a first down or a touchdown, lunging toward contact if it means gaining that pivotal final yard or two.
When it comes to scrambling, the only similarity between these Super Bowl quarterbacks is that they’re very good at how they do it. It’s such a big part of their success that the championship could be decided Sunday by which defense does the best job of putting the quarterback on the ground once he gets moving. “Both defenses have their work cut out for them trying to get to those guys,”
, F$C$ Sunday | FOX said John Kuhn, a running back who broke into the NFL taking handcuffs from Roethlisberger, but now plays behind Rodgers. “When defenses get to them, it’s not over. They’ve got to get them to the ground.” Mobile quarterbacks were commonplace in Super Bowls during the 1970s, the heyday of Roger Staubach, Fran Tarkenton, Bob Griese and a young Terry Bradshaw. But since the 1980s, it’s hard to find a single matchup that pits a pair of guys who scoot around as
9E79>?D= Ê;C KF
Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin was the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl, in 2008. He and Tony Dungy are the only black coaches to win a Super Bowl.
Under Mike McCarthy, Green Bay has made three of the past five postseasons. This is its first trip to the big game since ’98. (AP)
well as these two. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Rodgers ran for 23.8 yards per game this season, the most among all quarterbacks other than Michael Vick. It’s almost double Rodgers’ number for 2008, his first season as a full-time starter. Rodgers runs about as often as he did in ’08. The spike in production shows that he’s become a smarter runner. Another improvement is understanding how to use his feet to avoid sacks. He took 50 last season and 31 this season. The 6-foot-5, 241-pound Roethlisberger isn’t as speedy as Rodgers or Vick, nor as statuesque as Tom Brady or Peyton Manning; he just makes it work. This season, 15 of his 34 rushes produced first downs, a rate of 44 percent that was the best in the league among quarterbacks who ran more than five times. It turns out the formula for slowing scrambling quarterbacks starts with good tackling. “You’ve got to come in under control,” Steelers nose tackle Casey Hampton said. “If you are out of control, he’s going to slip you and get away.” A single player probably isn’t enough, either. “Once you see one guy going back there, you can’t just assume he’s going to bring him down,” Packers defensive end Cullen Jenkins said. “You’ve got to try to bring in other guys to help.” JAIME ARON (AP)

James Harrison: The linebacker made history with his 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Super Bowl two years ago. More recently, his hard hits to the head have drawn NFL fines. He’ll have to be careful to avoid a personal foul penalty at a key moment Sunday.

Antwaan Randle El: No one is going to be surprised if the former Redskin is called on to throw a pass as part of a trick play. The wide receiver hit Hines Ward for the play of the game in Super Bowl XL, in which the Steelers beat the Seahawks.

Tim Masthay: The rookie punter ranked in the middle of the pack in the regular season, but his playoff performances — especially against the Bears — played a key role in the pivotal field position battle.

Heath Miller: The tight end has seven catches in two playoff games, including a touchdown against the Ravens. He’s been one of Ben Roethlisberger’s favorite targets for years.
James Starks: The running back has come out of seemingly nowhere to rush for 263 yards on 70 carries in the postseason, giving Green Bay balance on offense. Is he the new Timmy Smith?
Charles Woodson: The 2009 defensive player of the year is the definition of a shut-down cornerback. Plus, he brings the ability to rush the passer on a blitz. If the Packers get creative, keep in mind that he played offense in college.

There are no more storied franchises than the Steelers and Packers, who will settle the best of 2010-11 Sunday. But we settle the all-time score now. (E XPRESS)

Here’s a contest that hits at the very core of the fanaticism these two teams elicit. Somewhat surprisingly, the yellow dish-ragged size towel that was first waved by Pittsburgh fans in the 1970s predates the yellow, foam block of cheese now synonymous with the Packer faithful by more than a decade. And while the Cheesehead is certainly the goofier and more recognizable of the two accessories, its origins actually trace back to a Brewers game in 1987 — not cool during Super Bowl week. Advantage: Steelers
Chuck Noll became the 14th coach in Steelers history in 1969. Perhaps more impressive than his four titles is that Pittsburgh’s 15th coach wasn’t hired for another 22 years. But the competition is stiff in this category — and it’s hard beating Lombardi, who led Green Bay to the first two Super Bowl titles. Packers WR Antonio Freeman makes the best argument: “Those first two Super Bowls, that was the start of it and made it all relevant. That is why they named it the Vince Lombardi Trophy. I repeat, the Vince Lombardi Trophy.” Advantage: Packers

Ikf[h 8emb NBL J>; F79A;HI M?BB M?D ?< $$$ Clay Matthews’ mane is flowing freely. In this matchup of two of the hairiest squads in the NFL, Matthews’ locks may be second only to Pittsburgh safety Troy Polomalu’s in terms of fame. That could change if Matthews gets a couple sacks on Ben Roethlisberger, and, oh, say, causes a fumble or two. With two strong defenses, a touchdown created off a turnover could make the difference.
There are fewer than five Brett Favre references in the broadcast. You know a few mentions of the former Packers QB are unavoidable, but the fewer times Favre is brought up, the more it means Green Bay starter Aaron Rodgers is becoming a Super Bowl hero himself. Rodgers has basically shed Favre’s shadow already; this game could just cement his place in Packers lore.
If Donald Driver scores a touchdown. Once the top Packers receiver, the veteran has lasted so long that many teammates have said they wanted to reach the big game for Driver’s sake. It’s not quite like Walter Payton with the Bears — who was denied a scoring chance in his lone Super Bowl — but a Driver TD would be sweet for Pack fans.

Give it a few years, and Ben Roethlisberger might take Bradshaw’s place in Steelers history, but for now, we’ll stick with the Louisiana loudmouth. He was a great player, for sure, but Bradshaw only threw for 300 yards in seven games (though two were Super Bowls). Favre never had the complete team Bradshaw did and was asked to do more. And before he was a unretiring drama queen, Favre was a threetime MVP who supposedly called it quits for good this year holding most of the league’s passing records. Advantage: Packers
The Rooneys — first Art and now his son, Dan — may be the best owners in all of sports: They rarely fire coaches, and create an environment that is clearly conducive to winning. Since Dan Rooney took over in 1975, Pittsburgh has gone six-for-six in Super Bowls . Then there are the Packers, who are in the unique position of being a publicly owned, nonprofit organization. It is probably this reason that the team has never left Green Bay and is certainly the reason that no fan base loves its squad more. Advantage: Packers
With a minus-13 temperature at game time, the 1967 NFL championship game is an all-time classic — with a classic moniker, “The Ice Bowl,” to boot. With third and one at the Cowboys’ goal line, Packers coach Vince Lombardi told QB Bart Starr, “Run it! And let’s get the hell out of here.” That’s what Starr did in one of the most famous plays ever. But Franco Harris’ unbelievable grab off a deflection in the 1972 playoffs is arguably the greatest play in NFL history. Advantage: Steelers

I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s funny.

Whitney Port AUTHOR, REALITY STARLET, LIFESTYLE SAGE Whitney Port has mastered the career trajectory of a reality star. Moving from MTV’s “The Hills” to her spin-off, “The City,” she’s continued on the path to ubiquity with a clothing label and, now, the publication of her first style book “True Whit: Designing a Life of Style, Beauty, and Fun” ($20, It Books). But unlike Lauren, Snooki, or the omnipresent James Franco, she’s not penning any semi-autobiographical novels — yet. Why write a style book? Because there are so many girls who have questions and don’t know where to find the answers. On my website (Whitneyport.celebuzz. com), people ask about different facets about being in your 20s. I wanted to teach girls about how I got through those points.
And what are girls asking you? The question I get asked the most is from girls who really want to be in the fashion industry and aren’t quite sure how to get there. What advice do you give them? That you have to start somewhere, and to not to be afraid of working your way up from the bottom. Find an internship somewhere, whether it’s at a clothing store or a local newspaper, even a tailor — someone that’s doing the fundamental work of fashion.
Why title your book “True Whit”? It was a cute play on words. It’s the essence of me; I’m being truthful and honest. And it’s pretty much what everyone calls me after meeting me once; they’re already calling me Whit.

You also give some dating advice. Any tips for single ladies? Don’t try too hard to find that special person. It’s really hard to relax and let it come to you, but the harder you try, the more guys get turned off by that energy. What do you wear on first dates? It depends on the environment, but a pretty blouse and a pair of fitted pants are a great first-date go-to. If you were banished to a deserted island for eternity, what magazine subscription would you get? Oh, my gosh, probably Harper’s Bazaar. They just have the most creative shoots and feature the best fashion. French or Italian couture? French.
Some of your friends are writing novels. Any plans for one? I highly doubt that. I don’t know that I have any stories to tell. K ATHERINE BOYLE (E XPRESS)

I make my living as a wedding photographer. My style is less traditional and more journalistic, which means I try to blend in somewhat with the guests. Manolo says, the wedding photographer is one of the most difficult of all creative occupations. On the one of the hands, if you do the job well, you will be praised for properly memorializing one of the happiest days in the life of the family. Your work will sit on the mantelpieces and pianos of parents, siblings and future children for generations to come. On the other of the hands, if you fail, you will be reviled as one of the great villains of history, alongside the Genghis Khan, John Wilkes Booth and the man who invented the 1040A form. You will be blamed for marriages that go bad, and your failure to Photoshop away the mustache and double chin of the bride, or your picture of Uncle Leo plumber’s crack will cited in divorce documents and become legend among the members of extended families. Which is why it is important to always ask for the big deposit up front. points in 1990. First, don’t over-marinate wings — that makes them mushy. Second, be sure your deep fryer or hot oil is cranked up to 375 F. “If it’s not, your wings will be very oily,” Moose says. Finally, if you use the grill, cook the flappers at a low heat so they don’t get tough. When it comes to seasoning wings, go bold, not wimpy. “There always needs to be a bit of fire,” say chef Roberto Donna of Galileo III (600 14th St. NW; 202-783-0083). Contrast flavors such as salty and sweet or fruity and spicy. Ba Bay’s (633 Pennsylvania Ave. SE; 202-547-1787) executive chef Nick Sharpe tosses his chicken limbs in a savory-sweet mixture of Asian vinegars, sambal, hoisin and brown sugar, and then sprinkles on a few slivers of scallion. “The onion balances everything,” he says.
And any student of Buffalo cuisine knows that dipping sauce matters mightily, too. Moose believes in offering lots of choices. “You’ve always got people that like hot food and people that don’t,” she says. “So, you should always provide a range from mild to wild.” If you’re worried about all that sticky stuff getting on the hands of testosterone-crazed fans, skip the condiments. Just be sure the wings are highly flavored to start with. “That way, when your team makes a pass, you don’t need to worry about wing sauce flying all over the living room,” says Seattle food blogger Deseree Kazda of Lifesambrosia.com. My husband and I have some differing opinions on movies. We work through them with open communication and a his-movie, her-movie alternating Netflix system. While some of our differences fall along typical gender lines — he has a higher tolerance for explosions; I have a better appreciation for silly — one thing we both agree on is we don’t much care for romantic movies. A well-done rom-com is one thing, but a soaring, high8o Ah_ij[d drama smoochfest? FW][#A_hXo We’ll skip it, thanks. Except for one, which is playing as part of the AFI Silver’s “Screen Valentines: Great Movie Romances” series (Friday-March 3; Afi.com/silver). “Somewhere in Time” is a 1980 melodrama in which Christopher Reeve time-travels back to the early 1900s to meet Jane Seymour, above. It’s everything I usually find icky about romantic dramas — it’s implausible and takes itself too seriously. But when my husband found it on TV one day, I got hooked. The performances are very strong, and for those of us unfamiliar with pre-“Superman” Reeve, it’s surprising to see what a talented actor he is. Also, he’s very hot. It’s not a movie for everyone, and it won’t convince men who disdain All Things Emotional that they should give “The Notebook” a try (it didn’t even get ME to watch “The Notebook”). But it’s worth a date night, if only to make you glad you don’t have to time-travel to find someone to love. Comments? Give Kristen your feedback: expressnightout.com/thereelist

Josh McGuire (Rhys Wakefield, left) and his father, Frank (Richard Roxburg, right), journey to an unexplored cave system in the James Cameron-produced “Sanctum.”

Well, “Sanctum” is nothing like that, because (a) there are five people scurrying around, and (b) they’re in submerged caverns, not submerged corridors. Plus, it’s in 3-D. Executive producer James Cameron might not have had much to do with “Sanctum,” which is a relatively low-budget production. But
the movie, directed by Alister Grierson, does use Cameron’s 3-D cinematography techniques and reflects his preference for spectacle over screenwriting. Set in Papua New Guinea, “Sanctum” sends about a dozen divers on an expedition into sprawling, partially flooded catacombs. The ones who count are crusty master spelunker Frank (Richard Roxburgh); his resentful teenage son, Josh (Rhys Wakefield); cocky American Carl (Ioan Gruffudd), who’s financing the dive; and George (Dan Wyllie), a veteran caver who’s savvy but burned out. The movie is most convincing when the characters have air tubes in their mouths, and it’s always cause for alarm when they stop swimming to talk out some conflict.

A typhoon is moving in, which is good reason to exit a subterranean cave system. But Frank is in no hurry, and the colleagues he sends toward the portal find it inundated by heavy rain. The survivors head back to their leader, who vows to lead them to the surface by another, uncharted course. Not all of them will make it, of course.
The subsequent action scenes are well staged, with moments certain to jangle anyone with mild claustrophobia, acrophobia or aquaphobia. “Sanctum” opens with the claim that it’s inspired by a true story; that real-life incident actually involved co-writer Andrew Wight. But Wight’s adventure was a lot less

SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
With the increasing dominance of 3-D animation and CGI technology, “The Illusionist” feels like a novelty in its embrace of all things oldfashioned. And given its acclaim on the festival circuit along with Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for best animated feature, it seems there’s a market for nostalgia. The animation reflects the movie’s 1959 setting with an aesthetic that’s more “Lady and the Tramp” than “Up,” and the story follows the last of a dying breed: an itinerant magician, whose career prospects look bleak as entertainment tastes turn from vaudeville toward mophaired singing Brits. To make matters worse, although he can very ably pull a coin out of a child’s ear, his act feels haphazard, all breaking glass and runaway rabbits. When

self with a travel companion and a daughter of sorts. Film buffs will find the genesis of the script noteworthy; it was written by the late French mime, director and actor Jacques Tati, who might be best known as the pipe-smoking, trench-coat-bedecked Monsieur Hulot. That character served as the template for the aging illusionist. A
J^[ Wd_cWj_ed h[Ô [Yji j^[ Ó bcÊi '/+/ i[jj_d] m_j^ Wd W[ij^[j_Y j^WjÊi ceh[ ÇBWZo WdZ j^[ JhWcfÈ j^Wd ÇKf$È bit of a galoot, he has Hulot’s same pear shape, high-water pants and distinctively sloppy gait. Tati completed the bittersweet script in 1959 as a dedication to his daughter, but he never did anything with it. Tati worked hard to concoct his clueless goofball persona, and maybe he felt that showing his serious side would have been like pulling back the curtain. That’s not to say the film is a total downer. Whimsical touches abound, including an ornery pet bunny, a fun-loving Scotsman who walks up hills just to roll down and a trio of acrobats who travel by hopping to a chorus of “hep, hep, hep.” The film feels most enchanting when these kinds of moments pop up, although they get less frequent as the little girl grows up and the story gets more serious. Thanks to delirious scenarios, bloody payoffs and the occasional devouring of a live octopus, Korean revenge fantasies like “Oldboy’’ have earned an international cult following. Cooler and cleaner than such movies, “The Housemaid” may seem to come from a different place altogether. But this, too, is a Korean revenge parable, and it builds to a startling outcome. “The Housemaid” is billed as writer-director Im Sang-soo’s remake of a 1960 Korean classic of the same

name. But while Im retains elements from the earlier movie’s story, he flips the premise. The original maid was a predator; this one is prey. Naive restaurant worker Eun-yi (Jeon Do-youn) accepts a job with a wealthy, Westernized family, as a catetaker for pampered Hae-ra (Seo Woo) and her daughter, Nami. The man of the house, baby-faced plutocrat Hoon (Lee Jung-jae), is rare-
ly at home. But when he’s there, he gets what he wants: imported red wine, time to practice Beethoven piano sonatas and lots of sex. One night after Hae-ra fails to oblige, Hoon calls on Eun-yi. The new maid doesn’t resist, but then how could she? Not only is Eunyi a poor woman with no prospects, but her new home is a gleaming, luxurious dream world. Things become real abruptly, when housekeeper Mrs. Cho (Youn Yuh-jung), realizes that Eun-yi is pregnant. Only Hoon is slow to understand what’s happening. Maybe he never entirely does, even after the exiled maid returns to punish the family with a horrif ic spectacle. MARK JENKINS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Hearts and flowers are on many people’s minds in February, but at BlackFinn (4901 Fairmont Ave., Bethesda; 301-951-5681), the focus is on the thing beating inside your chest: The bar hosts GO RED, a happy hour benefit for the American Heart Association. Enjoy free “hearthealthy” appetizers and chocolatecovered strawberries, and enter to win prizes, including a Paloma Picasso “Loving Heart” necklace from Tiffany, plus drink specials. Admission is a $10 donation to the American Heart Association, but it’s only $5 if you’re wearing red. The party runs from 6 to 9 p.m.
DC9 (1940 Ninth St. NW; 202-4835000) is up and running again, though it’s not quite business as usual. Still, some of the club’s longrunning nights are starting to make their way back to the lineup. This weekend marks the return of Kids ($6 after 10 p.m.), the epic ’90s-only hip-hop party that gained some fame (and/or notoriety) for giving free admission and free Olde English malt liquor to early arrivals. DJs JACKIE O, NACEY and STEVE STARKS
are in the building, and there’s a special guest appearance by founding DJ LIL’ ELLE, who left D.C. for San Francisco last year. Expect plenty of Biggie, ‘Pac, Wu and Tru, and arrive between 9 and 10 p.m. for the free booze and entry. When D.C.’s best spinners get busy at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club (1103 Bladensburg Road NE; 10 p.m.; Jimmyvalentineslhc. com), it’s like an oddball den in your home transforming organically into a dance party. The combination of neighborhood locals, Jimmy V’s regulars and newbies tend to mingle easily, and with a space so intimate, it’s pretty easy to crank up a vibe. Expect deep house and bit of debauchery from DJs DOUBLE O7 and DAN SODA .
SUNDAY This is the story of two lifelong French Canadian buddies — one of whom is a Ph.D. student at Columbia University — who began producing underground hip-hop in the late ’90s and then discovered a formula for success. As CHROMEO , Dave 1 and P-Thugg take their influences seriously (techno-flavored disco and early ’80s electro) but not themselves. It’s cheeky, infectiously fun dance music. Don’t miss their show at 7 p.m. at the 9:30 Club (815 V St. NW; $25; 202-265-0930). Check out an extended version of “Nightlife Agenda” each Thursday at Goingoutguide.com

FbWo_d] 127 HOURS (R, 90 minutes) British filmmaker Danny Boyle’s movie tells the story of a climber who in 2003 became trapped in a slot canyon in Utah, his right arm pinned under a falling boulder. Most of the buzz about the movie, which stars James Franco as climber Aron Ralston, centers on the film’s climax, when Ralston breaks and then amputates his own arm in order to escape certain death. Although Ralston’s act of desperation is difficult to watch, viewers who might avoid the film out of squeamishness would be depriving themselves of a most exhilarating cinematic experiences. A.H. ANOTHER YEAR (PG-13, 129 minutes) Mike Leigh, Britain’s most eloquent Bard of the Bummed, has returned. After 2009’s subversively cheerful “Happy-GoLucky,” he has come back with equally provocative, if slightly more familiar ground with “Another Year,” in which he brings his considerable talents to bear on limning our capacities for hope, sadness and self-deception. Mary (Lesley Manville) possesses all of those things in spades. When she visits her friends Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen), the wholesome moderation and companionable ease of their marriage simply casts her own late-middle-aged loneliness into sharper relief. A.H. BARNEY’S VERSION (R, 131 minutes) “Barney’s Version,” for which star Paul Giamatti won a well-earned Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy, brings

Mordecai Richler’s corrosive final novel to the screen. Producer of an awful soap opera in its 30th season on the air, Barney Panofsky seems blithely unconcerned about the value of his life’s work. But he is haunted, in a series of flashbacks, by the wives he has lost and the best friend he may or may not have killed. Finally, Barney meets the love of his life, radio host Miriam (Rosamund Pike), and — undeterred by the fact that he met her at his second wedding — makes her his third wife. DAN KOIS BIUTIFUL (R, 147 minutes) Watching Javier Bardem occupy, embrace and ultimately own a multifaceted role like the one he plays in “Biutiful” is a rare treat and an absolute joy. Which is good, because joy is in short supply in Inarritu’s film. We’re introduced to Uxbal (Bardem), a cancer-ridden father of two young children in Barcelona who is racing against the clock — and his own failing health — to solidify his family’s social and financial standing before succumbing to his disease. Impediments include, but are not limited to, Uxbal’s thieving co-workers, his cheating brother and his dysfunctional ex-wife. SEAN O’CONNELL BLACK SWAN (R, 103 minutes) In the role of Nina Sayers, Natalie Portman delivers a bravura performance as a dancer with a New York dance company. The troupe’s artistic director, Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel), taps her to star in a production of “Swan Lake.” Her technical brilliance makes her perfect for the White Swan, but he’s less sure she can pull off the ruthlessness of her evil twin, the Black Swan. Perhaps Lily (Mila Kunis), an uninhibited newcomer to the company, would be better suited

to the role. A.H. BLUE VALENTINE (R, 114 minutes) On paper, the film sounds like a downer: a portrait of a marriage unraveling, even as the couple revisit the happier days of their courtship. But Derek Cianfrance is a filmmaker alive to the rough beauty of even the deepest pain. Cianfrance is a director willing to take his actors to emotional and even physical extremes, allowing them to create a world on screen that possesses all the volatility and ragged ends of real life. The results can be almost unbearably harrowing but also deeply cathartic, as viewers create their own meanings within Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy’s (Michelle Williams)
singular downward spiral. A.H. THE COMPANY MEN (R, 113 minutes) A massive corporation responds to flagging profits and shareholder anxiety with layoffs. Writer-director John Wells uses the timely scenario to dive into the details with a trio of character studies, chronicling how the pressures of downsizing affect three men and their families. The first casualty is Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck), a cocky salesman and father of two. The staff cuts practically torment Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper), who’s nearing retirement age and seems convinced he’s next on the chopping block, and infuriate Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones), Continued on page 32

That may be a gross oversimplification of what happens in “Country Strong,” the story of a Nashville diva (Paltrow) attempting to relaunch her career after rehab. But it’s an accurate description of how it feels to watch this disjointed drama. Paltrow, under-served by the material at almost every turn, pours every drop of twang and

The titular conundrum arises when Ronny Valentine (Vaughn) discovers his best friend’s wife, Geneva (Winona Ryder), canoodling with Zip, played by Channing Tatum. mum? STEPHANIE MERRY THE FIGHTER (R, 115 minutes) In the 1970s, welterweight boxer Dicky Eklund, known as the “Pride of Lowell,” made local history in that working-class Massachusetts city by sending Sugar Ray Leonard to the mat. Later, lost in a vortex of drug addiction and running petty hustles, Dicky trained his half-brother Micky Ward, eventually to a world welterweight championship. The title character of “The Fighter” might be Micky — played here in a straight-up, stalwart, hugely sympathetic performance by Mark Wahlberg. But it could just as easily pertain to the hardscrabble Dicky, especially as he’s channeled by Christian Bale. A.H. GREEN HORNET (PG-13, 108 minutes) There was a time when movies about superheroes were dark and full of angst. The Green Hornet (Seth Rogen) has changed all that. Rogen plays a superhero who’s a jokester. His father, played by Tom Wilkinson, dies, and Britt (Rogen’s alter ego) inherits his mansion, his garage full of luxury cars, and the newspaper he edited for years. Rogen and Jay Chou, who plays Britt’s partner, Kato, have real chemistry. In fact, Kato’s often the best part of the movie. DAN KOIS THE KING’S SPEECH (R, 118 minutes) There’s nothing not to love about Tom Hooper’s classy historical drama, which tells the story of how Britain’s King George VI (Colin Firth) overcame a debilitating stutter and went on to lead the country through World War II. Although Bertie, as he was known to his family, had no intention of assuming the throne, he found himself wearing the crown when his brother, King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), abdicated. Painfully shy and reticent to the point of paralysis, Bertie freezes up every time he approaches a microphone. It’s a situation that Bertie’s wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), realizes just won’t do. A.H. THE MECHANIC (R, 95 minutes) Many movies make us ask why. With “The Mechanic,” it’s more like “Why now?” Nearly 40 years ago, the original film put Charles Bronson on the road to box-office immortality. This time, we get the sleeker, buffer, balder Jason Statham as Arthur Bishop — hit man extraordinaire. The heart of it all remains the relationship between Arthur and Steve McKenna (Ben Foster). Arthur has, out of professional necessity, killed Steve’s father, Harry (Donald Sutherland), who was his longtime associate and friend. Steve doesn’t

Forgive the pseudo-spoiler, but anyone with even vague knowledge of romantic-comedy cliches knows how this contemporary twist on the Harry-sleepswith-Sally routine will conclude. J.C. THE RITE (PG-13, 112 minutes) The film’s story — based on Matt Baglio’s book “The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist,” which allegedly was inspired by true events — is told through the eyes of Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue), a skeptic who enters the priesthood to avoid
working for his mortician father (Rutger Hauer). After four years of schooling, however, Michael still isn’t convinced that a life of service is his calling, so Father Superior (Toby Jones) assigns Michael to an innovative exorcism school in Rome, where the student trains under the watchful eye of spirit slayer Father Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins). S.O. TRUE GRIT (PG-13, 109 minutes) Writerdirectors Joel and Ethan Coen remake the 1969 Western that earned John Wayne his only Oscar. Hailee Steinfeld makes an uncommonly assured debut as the invincible Mattie Ross, whose father has been shot by a man named Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Mattie arrives in Fort Smith, Ark., to claim her father’s body, acquire cash by way of some canny horse-trading and avenge her father’s death by hunting Chaney down and seeing him hang. She enlists U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to go into Indian territory and bring in Chaney. A.H. THE WAY BACK (PG-13, 132 minutes) Based on Slavomir Rawicz’s discredited memoir “The Long Walk,” “The Way Back” is blissfully free of heroic speeches, swelling music cues or overwrought death scenes. In 1940, Janusz (Jim Sturgess), a prisoner in a Soviet gulag, leads an improbable escape from the remote site, 4,000 miles on foot from Siberia to India. “The Way Back” diligently catalogs the outrages through which extreme cold, hunger and thirst put the body. But is an astonishing true story as impressive when it isn’t exactly true? D.K.

Wild Bunch D.C. has a reputation for placid concerts and audiences whose gentle head bobbing never spills their PBR, no matter how metal the music. That kind of gentility won’t be an option at Monotonix, the scream-in-yourface Israeli garage rock band that will be at Comet Ping Pong Friday. Lead singer Ami Shalev, bottom right, is known for being a madman, so don’t wear clothes you care about. Comet Ping Pong, 5037 Connecticut Ave. NW; Fri., 10 p.m., $12; 202-364-0404, Cometpingpong.com. (Van Ness)

The Sanity of Words
American holidays are better than all other holidays. You can tell the Fourth of July is the best holiday, because it is the MOST American. But we cannot help but look longingly at La Chandeleur, the French celebration that involves fortune-telling and eating a massive amount of crepes. Hillwood and the Alliance Francaise have teamed up for a “Crepe Day” celebration in which kids and adults can decorate porcelain plates and munch on these delicious French pancakes. Hillwood Estate,4155 Linnean Ave. NW; Sat., 10 a.m.1 p.m., $15, $10 for children; 202686-5807, Hillwoodmuseum.org.
Not that we ever get tired of Shakespeare, but companies that find exciting new ways to present his plays keep our enjoyment of the Bard fresh. The SITI Company’s “Radio Macbeth” — starring Will Bond, left — reimagines the Scottish play as a dark, 1940s radio production that is inexorably invaded by madness, murder and jealousy. Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, University of Maryland, College Park; Fri. and Sat., 8 p.m., $35; 301-4052787, Claricesmithcenter.umd.edu. (College Park)

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
