You know it’s a good party when the elk’s head goes missing

A worker at a recycling plant in Barrie, Ontario, recently opened up an old TV set and found $100,000 stashed inside. Police were alerted and found the TV’s original owner through documents left with the cash, UPI reported. The owner told police the money was inherited and hidden in the TV for safekeeping, but he forgot about it. “Hopefully, he’s put it in a savings account now,” Constable Nicole Rodgers said. (EXPRESS)

Authorities in Carbondale, Colo., said a man battered a fellow snowmobiler’s pickup truck with a baseball bat and then left a note acknowledging he was at fault. Police said the note read, “Sorryy anger isusesh.” Two witnesses told police the suspect apparently thought the pickup had parked too close to his vehicle. Police recently charged a 53-year-old suspect in the case with criminal mischief. (AP)

Talk about a wild party. Police in Delaware said Monday that they are searching for a mounted elk’s head valued at $65,000 that went missing from a home in Wilmington during a party Feb. 10. Police said they were told about 50 people were at the get-together. Officers who walked through the home afterward said they saw multiple holes in the walls and three broken windows. (AP)

A flurry of 2017 promotions A Scherzer snow globe and Chewie Koozie will be Nationals’ giveaways OOPS

NATIONALS Will Nationals fans be excited about the team’s 2017 promotional schedule? Signs point to yes. This year’s list of giveaways and theme nights at Nationals Park includes a Nationalsbranded Magic 8-Ball (with baseball-themed answers) on opening day (April 3), three bobbleheads, a Max Scherzer snow globe and the return of Star Wars Day. The bobbleheads, which will be given to the first 25,000 fans on three Fridays during the season, are of second baseman and Silver Slugger winner Daniel Murphy (April 14), sliding shortstop Trea Turner (May 12) and pitcher Tanner Roark (June 9). None of those players have been featured as bobbleheads by the Nationals before. Scherzer, who was celebrated with two bobbleheads last season, will instead be featured in a Cy Young snow globe, with tiny Ks among the fake snowflakes, on May 24. The Nationals’ promotional schedule has included a Bryce

Other giveaways include a Patriotic Tank Top (June 14), a Nationals Fedora (July 26) and a tote bag (Aug. 15). Star Wars Day, a huge success the past two seasons, will be May 27, and the giveaway will be a Chewbacca Koozie. In addition to theme games, the

Nationals will again host several “special ticket events” that, as the name suggests, require the purchase of a special ticket. Past events that are back for 2017 include Yoga in the Outfield (May 28 and Sept. 10), Nationals Night Out (June 13), Seniors Stroll the Bases (June 24 and Aug. 30), Taste of the World (July 8), Ladies Night (July 29) and Pups in the Park (various dates). Perhaps if it hadn’t been Presidents Day weekend, it would have been easier to ignore what happened Sunday night at the Washington Monument. But during the long weekend many associate with George Washington, the lights did not go on at the monument that bears his name. Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said the lights failed to turn on as scheduled at about dusk. He said electricians were called and the lights were fixed. It was the third time this year the lights failed to work. (TWP)

Goodbye, ‘Precious Treasure’ Residents of D.C. and beyond gather to show love for Bao Bao, who departs for China this afternoon

expressline

Flight plans Bao Bao is scheduled to depart the National Zoo this morning and travel to Dulles International Airport, where she’ll board a special FedEx plane for the 16-hour nonstop flight to China. Fans will be able to watch her departure from the zoo and airport on the zoo’s Facebook page. “Most of the flight, we hope she’s going to eat,” said panda keeper Marty Dearie, who will travel with Bao Bao. Asian small-clawed otter. Many had driven from afar to find the surrounding roads jammed with cars and the wait for a parking space more than an hour. Most of the world’s giant pandas are on loan from China, and cubs born abroad are sent to the Chinese breeding program before they turn 4. Bao Bao, whose name means “precious treasure” in English, is traveling now because it’s better for pandas to travel in the winter months when it is cool. Although the National Zoo has had pandas since 1972, Bao Bao is only the second surviving one born there;

AMANDA VOISARD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT To fall in love with a panda, according to those who know, you have to get to know it as an individual. “You don’t just look at them and say, ‘OK, I’ve seen a panda,’ ” said Elspeth Grindlay, a diminutive woman who arrived at the National Zoo on Monday morning in a panda T-shirt, with panda pendants around her neck. Rather, it is through hours of watching it lumber about, chew on bamboo and expose its furry tummy that you come to understand its spirit. That is why Grindlay has flown to D.C. from Scotland five times in the past year alone, and why this visit was the most bittersweet. Bao Bao, the panda she and countless others fell in love with when she was born at the National Zoo 3½ years ago, is leaving. At 1:30 p.m. today, the bear will depart on a special flight from Dulles airport to Chengdu, China. This was fans’ opportunity to say goodbye. Like pilgrims, they proceeded down the Asia Trail, bypassing the sloth bear, the clouded leopard and the

her older brother, Tai Shan, moved to China in 2010. Vicky Zhang, a Rockville resident from China, brought her two U.S.-born children to see her off. “We want the kids to know the panda is from China and hopefully some day we can go back to see her in China,” she said. “If

you mention pandas everyone knows it comes from China, and we are proud of that.” Why are pandas so adored? “That expression,” said Blaine D’Amico of Arlington. “They seem more friendly and human, even though they are bears. … And they’re vegetarians. I mean,

a vegetarian bear.” Although she has been receiving ice cakes and extra visitors these past days, Bao Bao probably didn’t know it was her last full day in her birth country, and she may not feel very nostalgic once she figures it out. She has lived in her own enclosure since 2015 — pandas are solitary in the wild — so she’s unlikely to miss her parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, or her little brother, Bei Bei. Perhaps it was just the unseasonably warm day that inspired her to put on one last show, to gambol around her enclosure, to bat at a burlap bag and hug the special cardboard suitcase. She wrapped her arms around a hot pink plastic crate and licked it. That was when Leslie Johnson lost it. “I gave her that crate,” said the Fairfax resident and regular Bao Bao visitor, dabbing at tears. “I’m sad but happy,” she said. “It’s like sending a kid off to college. ... What we all want for her is to perpetuate the species and have beautiful little cubbies. But it’s hard to watch her go.” TARA BAHRAMPOUR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Man gets 8 years for trying to help Islamic State group

The D.C. Council’s chairman says the body will consider revising its recently passed law granting a halfmillion workers up to eight weeks of paid family leave. D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said Friday he was suggesting changes because opposition from local business leaders could hinder the program’s success. Mendelson said the benefits will remain the same but the means of paying for them may be redesigned. He says new versions of the bill will be filed over the next month. Council members passed the bill and Mayor Muriel Bowser allowed it to take effect without her signature last week. (AP/TWP)

A Virginia man who talked about his desire to carry out beheadings for the Islamic State was sentenced Friday to more than eight years in prison after getting caught in an FBI sting last year trying to help the group. Haris Qamar, 26, is one of more than a half-dozen men from the Northern Virginia area charged in the past few years with helping the Islamic State or attempting to do so. Asked to explain himself at a sentencing hearing, Qamar said he felt compelled to respond to videos and news accounts he saw online showing innocent Muslims, including women and children, being slaughtered in the Middle East. William J. Howell has presided over state’s lower chamber 14 years VIRGINIA Virginia House Speaker William J. Howell, a long-serving conservative who is one of the state’s most powerful politicians, said Monday he will retire when his term ends in January. The 73-year-old speaker made the announcement during an emotional House floor speech, saying he wants to spend more time with his family. Howell, who was joined by his wife of 50 years, Cessie, and other family members, said he’s tried to be a fair and accessible leader. “Together, I believe we have enhanced the lives and livelihoods of our fellow citizens we are so privileged to represent and serve,” Howell said. House Majority Leader Kirk Cox is widely expected to be Howell’s successor, though other Republicans may challenge him. Elected as speaker in 2003, Howell has been a steady GOP presence in a state that’s growing increasingly Democratic. He will leave office as the secondlongest serving speaker in Virginia history. some legislative priorities of Democratic governors, including Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s push to expand Medicaid. But Howell has not been ideologically inflexible. He supported tax increases to fund transportation projects in 2013 — a position that led to him being challenged by a tea party candidate in a 2015 primary contest. And House Minority Leader David Toscano praised Howell for single-handedly defeating a measure muscled through by Senate Republicans in 2013 to redraw all 40 state Senate districts, saying Howell had put the integrity of the General Assembly above partisan expediency. “You changed the way things operate here,” Toscano said. nation+world Iraqi police forces fire on Islamic State positions near Abu Saif, south of Mosul, on Monday.

BRAM JANSSEN (AP)

IRAQ Iraqi forces advanced Monday into the southern outskirts of Mosul on the second day of a push to drive Islamic State militants from the city’s western half. In Baghdad, U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis met with officials to discuss the fight against the extremists. In Mosul, with aerial support from the U.S.-led coalition, Iraqi police and army troops launched the offensive Sunday, part of a 100-day-old campaign that has already driven the militants from the eastern half of the city. Iraqi helicopters fired rockets

at the village of Abu Saif early Monday, targeting a hill that overlooks the city’s airport. By noon, the forces entered the village and gained control over much of the strategic hill as fighting was still raging. Separately, militarized police were moving toward a military base on the southwestern outskirts of the city. The battle for western Mosul is expected to be the most daunting yet. The streets are narrower, and the area more densely populated. A U.S.-led coalition has been providing close air support throughout the campaign to retake Iraq’s second-largest city. U.S. special operations forces are embedded with some Iraqi units and thousands of U.S. troops are

in Iraq providing logistical and other support. Army Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend said that about 450 advisers are “operating closer and deeper into Iraqi formations” during the latest drive on Mosul. In the Iraqi capital, Mattis held discussions with U.S. and Iraqi officials, a week before he is expected to present a new strategy to President Trump for defeating the Islamic State group. On Sunday night, Mattis rejected a suggestion by Trump that the U.S. might take Iraq’s oil: “I think all of us here in this room … have generally paid for our gas and oil all along, and I am sure we will continue to do so in the future,” Mattis said. “We’re not in Iraq to seize anybody’s oil.”

So many people want to be Donald Trump during this year’s pre-Lenten Carnival season in Austria that some costume shops have run out of wigs mimicking the U.S. president’s memorable hairstyle. Costume shop owner Manuela Plank made 10 wigs designed to mimic Trump’s distinctive hairstyle as her 3,500-person town of Pfaffstaetten prepared for the Carnival festivities. She quickly sold out, made and sold another 15, and now plans to tease up more toupees a la Trump since Carnival extends into early March this year. “It all takes quite a bit of time,” she said. “You have to do a lot of back-combing. But you can get it done.” (AP)

Self-driving safety debated TECHNOLOGY How many people could selfdriving cars kill before we would no longer tolerate them? This once hypothetical question is now taking on greater urgency. Advocates of autonomous vehicles say that they will make our roads safer, but no technology is without its shortcomings. “What if we can build a car that’s 10 times as safe, which means 3,500 people die on the roads each year. Would we accept that?” asks John Hanson, a spokesman for the Toyota Research Institute, which is

More than 35,000 people were killed in vehicle collisions in the U.S. in 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency estimated that 94 percent of those

wrecks were due to human error. Self-driving advocates assert that the technology could make those deaths a misfortune of the past. However, humans are not entirely rational when it comes to fear-based decision-making. People are more inclined to forgive mistakes made by humans than machines, Gill Pratt, the chief executive of the Toyota Research Institute, told lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week. “The artificial intelligence systems on which autonomous vehicle technology will depend are presently and unavoidably imperfect,” Pratt said. “So, the question is, ‘how safe is safe enough’ for this technology to be deployed?” STEVEN OVERLY

LONDON | An anti-Trump placard is seen Monday near the Houses of Parliament as British lawmakers debated whether to withdraw an invitation extended to President Trump for a state visit. The debate was triggered after a petition calling on the government to cancel the visit amassed more than 1.8 million signatures. Lawmakers don’t have the power to withdraw the offer, but the debate was still a political headache for Prime Minister Theresa May.

They see Trump on top Supporters view president as successful — and are frustrated with critics who don’t Trump names security adviser to replace Flynn

JOE RAEDLE (GETTY IMAGES)

MELBOURNE, FLA. Many of President Trump’s most dedicated supporters — the sort who waited for hours in the Florida sun this weekend for his first post-inauguration rally — say their lives changed on election night. Suddenly, they felt like their views were actually respected and in the majority. But a month into Trump’s term, many of his supporters say they once again feel under attack — perhaps even more so than before. Those who journeyed to Trump’s Saturday evening event on Florida’s Space Coast said that since the election, they have unfriended some of their liberal relatives or friends on Facebook. They don’t understand why major media outlets don’t see the same successful administration they have been cheering on. And they’re increasingly frustrated that Democrats — and some Republicans — are too slow to approve some of the president’s nominees and too quick to protest his every utterance. “They’re stonewalling everything that he’s doing because they’re just being babies about it,” said Patricia Melani, 56, a New Jersey native who now lives in Melbourne, Fla., and attended her third Trump rally Saturday. She blames the media for circulating “fake” stories about the president — like when she believed he was “very cool, wasn’t yelling” at a Thursday news conference, yet a CNN anchor described his behavior as “unhinged.” “There’s such hatred for the man,” she said. “I just don’t get it.” Rally attendees panned coverage of the chaos within his administration and the president’s now-halted executive order that briefly banned residents of seven Muslim-majority countries and

all refugees. Many acknowledged that the president’s first month could have been smoother, but they said the media has overblown those hiccups — and they were glad to see the president fight back and label the media Friday on Twitter as “the enemy of the American People!” “It was hilarious to see him give it to the media,” said Tony Lopez, 28, a car dealer who drove to the rally from Orlando. “The media’s problem is that they keep wanting to make up stories so that he looks bad. It doesn’t work. He’s talking right through you guys.” Several people said they would have liked to see more coverage of a measure Trump signed Thursday that rolled back a last-minute Obama regulation that would have restricted coal mines from dumping debris in nearby streams. “If he hadn’t gotten into office, 70,000 miners would have been put out of work,” said Patricia Nana, a 42-year-old naturalized

The regulation actually would have cost relatively few mining jobs and would have created nearly as many new jobs on the regulatory side, according to a government report — an example of the frequent distance between Trump’s rhetoric, which many of his supporters wholeheartedly believe, and verifiable facts.

Melani, for example, said she gets most of her news from talk radio — “Herman Cain on my way into work … Sean [Hannity] on my way home” — and Fox News. She and her husband were wellversed on the holdups with Cabinet nominees and legal arguments for the now-frozen travel ban. But they didn’t know much about the resignation of Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn last week amid accusations that he improperly discussed U.S. sanctions with the Russian ambassador — and then withheld that information from top officials. “I haven’t really been watching and listening too much on it,” Melani said. “I think he kind of did it just to step away, a trust kind of a thing. And now, of course, they want to pull a big investigation. … To be honest with you, I really think it’s only because of the way the haters are out there.” JENNA JOHNSON AND DAVID WEIGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS President Trump announced Monday that he is naming Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, above, as his national security adviser, replacing the ousted Michael Flynn. “He’s a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience,” Trump said as he introduced McMaster to reporters at the president’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. “He is highly respected by everyone in the military, and we’re very honored to have him.” Retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who had been acting national security adviser, will become the National Security Council chief of staff, Trump said. “I think that combination is something very, very special,” Trump said of McMaster and Kellogg, later adding: “What a team. This is a great team.” Flynn was asked to resign last week amid allegations that he discussed U.S. sanctions with a Russian official before Trump took office and then misrepresented the content of that conversation to Vice President Pence and other administration officials. McMaster served in the first Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq. Considered a scholarly officer, he holds a Ph.D. in military history and has written articles questioning the planning for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Trial begins for 47 charged with trying to kill Erdogan

Organizers of this week’s Conservative Political Action Conference rescinded their booking of Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos on Monday. The action came after critics of the right-wing speaker published videos of him criticizing age-of-consent laws and joking about a teenage sexual encounter he had with a Catholic priest. “Due to the revelation of an offensive video in the past 24 hours condoning pedophilia, the American Conservative Union has decided to rescind the invitation,” the group said in a statement. The conference will begin Wednesday in National Harbor, Md. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, a veteran diplomat known as a potent and personable voice for his country’s interests as he sparred with his Western counterparts, died suddenly after falling ill Monday in his office at the mission. Vitaly Churkin, 64, was taken to a hospital in New York, where he died. It was a day before his 65th birthday. His cause of death wasn’t immediately known. He had been Russia’s envoy at the United Nations since 2006 and was considered Moscow’s great champion at the U.N. His death came at the start of a week when the Security Council is expected to discuss Ukraine and Syria. (AP)

North Korea’s ambassador to Malaysia, Kang Chol, said Monday that Malaysia cannot be trusted to carry out the investigation into last week’s killing of leader Kim Jong Un’s half brother, as tensions over the death become increasingly heated. Adding to the intrigue: CCTV footage released Monday showing the attack on Kim Jong Nam at Kuala Lumpur airport. Earlier Monday, Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said it had recalled its envoy to Pyongyang. The diplomatic spat deepened when Malaysia refused to hand over Kim’s corpse to North Korean diplomats and conducted at least one autopsy over their objections. (AP/TWP)

A trial opened Monday in Turkey for 47 people charged with attempting to kill President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the night of a failed coup while he was vacationing with his family. The suspects — 37 of them former military personnel — face possible life sentences on charges that include attempted assassination, overthrow of the constitutional order and other crimes against the state during the July 15 coup attempt. The defendants are accused of attacking the hotel in the resort of Marmaris where Erdogan was staying, killing two policemen. Three of the suspects are still at large and are being tried in absentia. INJURY UPDATE

Adam Eaton had the third-most defensive runs saved in the majors last season.

‘Mighty’ man in center At 5-foot-8, outfielder Adam Eaton is accustomed to outperforming expectations NATIONALS Adam Eaton has worn the same gray Mighty Mouse T-shirt in the Nationals’ clubhouse in West Palm Beach, Fla., every day for the past week. His wife bought it for him because Mighty Mouse, a cartoon rodent with a bodybuilder’s physique popular in the 1950s, was Eaton’s nickname in college. By his own admission, Eaton, who is 5-foot-8, has a little Napoleon in him, too. He’s needed the complex to smash through barriers: First, to play Division I baseball at Miami University of Ohio; then to get drafted in the 19th round; then to reach the majors; then to become the best big leaguer nobody had heard of with the White Sox over the past three years.

Eaton was remarkably consistent in those three years — his on-base percentages were .362, .361, and .362. His cloak of anonymity was removed during winter meetings in December, when the Nationals sent three top pitching prospects to the White Sox to acquire him. The Nationals were drawn to Eaton’s style and relatively cheap contract, which places him under team control for five seasons. Industry consensus was the price to get Eaton, 28, was too steep, but he said that doesn’t affect him. “It’s not my job to try to put weight on my shoulders or try to see what they’ve given up for me,” he said. “I’ve been doubted my whole life, my whole career,

in center field after an involuntary hiatus. In 2014, he was one of the three finalists for the AL Gold Glove. But a shoulder injury hurt his defense in 2015, and Chicago last season bumped him to right, where he compiled 22 defensive runs saved, third in the majors behind Boston’s Mookie Betts (32). With Washington, Eaton, for once, isn’t the smallest ballplayer in a big league clubhouse. That at -7 would be Tim Collins, a 5-foot-7 reliever rehabbing from his seccond Tommy John surgery. Terrapins’ Cekovsky out for year Maryland junior center Michal Cekovsky will miss the rest of the men’s basketball season with a fractured left ankle suffered in Sunday’s 71-60 loss at Wisconsin, the school announced Monday. At 7-foot-1, he had battled multiple lower body injuries this season before returning to the rotation earlier this month. He was injured during a defeat that put the No. 25 Terrapins (22-5, 10-4 Big Ten) one game behind both Wisconsin and Purdue for first place in the conference. The injury was confirmed after an MRI examination Monday. Cekovsky played in 17 games this season, averaging a career-high 7.6 points and 2.8 rebounds. (TWP)

Excuses vanish with trade Neither the Kings nor Cousins can blame each other for future failings

Burakovsky’s absence tests Sanford, Vrana

DeMarcus Cousins, who spent 6 ½ years with the Kings, joins Anthony Davis with the Pelicans.

Now, after both the Kings and Cousins have been painted by the other as the bad guy in their relationship of six-plus years, the time has come to see. With Cousins headed to New Orleans to team with fellow All-Star Anthony Davis and starting point guard Jrue Holiday, and Sacramento finally committed to a long-term rebuilding plan, both sides will get to prove it was the other that ruined this situation. For Sacramento, the trade is both stunning and predictable. When the new collective bargaining agreement was announced several weeks ago, the Designated Player Exception — which allowed a player like Cousins, if he met certain criteria, to be

paid far more by his current team than if he left for another — was supposed to be a weapon for small-market teams. But it made Sacramento look at Thursday’s trade deadline as a cutoff on multiple fronts. If Cousins was still on the team Thursday at 12:01 p.m. California time, the Kings would have felt obligated to offer him a contract extension July 1 that would give him over $200 million over five years. Sacramento decided it couldn’t invest that much. So now the Kings are essentially betting on themselves. They think Hield will be a good player, but they are under no illusions that they’ve just acquired an All-Star in the making.

With the addition of first- and second-round picks they received from the Pelicans, the Kings will have a chance to restock their roster. But it’s up to them to prove they can actually draft some quality players It’s up to Cousins to prove that trading him was a mistake. Only he can stop racking up technical fouls at a ridiculous rate. Only he can focus defensively. Only he can prove he’s a team player, and not the pain in the neck many around the league view him to be. Now it’s up to Cousins and the Kings to prove the other was at fault for their divorce — or to prove both were always going to be hopeless regardless. TIM BONTEMPS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

GREGORY SHAMUS (GETTY IMAGES)

ANALYSIS For the past several years, one of the great debates around the NBA was about why the Kings have remained one of the league’s most miserable franchises. Was it because the team was incompetent, having gone through multiple owners, coaches and executives over the past several years? Or was it because its temperamental star, big man DeMarcus Cousins, was incapable of being the fulcrum of a contender? Sunday night, as the NBA AllStar Game wound down in New Orleans, the Kings and Pelicans agreed to a trade that will send Cousins to New Orleans (along with swingman Omri Casspi) in exchange for rookie guard Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans’ expiring contract and a first- and second-round pick in this year’s draft. Just looking at Cousins — a three-time All-Star and a twotime all-NBA player — would make it seem like this trade is a no-brainer for New Orleans, and would lead many to question the Kings. But the prevailing wisdom around the NBA on Sunday night and Monday was that this was the best Sacramento was going to get for Cousins. Multiple sources said the Kings’ talks with the Celtics, Lakers and Magic all sputtered.

CAPITALS As Andre Burakovsky watched the game on TV in his apartment Saturday, the Capitals’ line he typically would be a part of hopped onto the ice with less than two minutes left in the second period in Detroit. Zach Sanford, playing for the injured Burakovsky at right wing, snapped Lars Eller’s pass into the net for his second NHL goal in as many games. Sanford’s quick trigger in that moment even resembled Burakovsky’s. Burakovsky’s hand injury was unfortunate for a young forward who was playing well and a team that was on a roll. But if there’s a silver lining, it’s that with the trade deadline less than two weeks away, the Caps can test their depth at forward behind Burakovsky, who is expected to be out until at least mid-March. Sanford’s play in the past three games has reinforced why Washington may not need to add a veteran by the March 1 deadline. As it has throughout the season, the club could look to two rookies, Sanford and Jakub Vrana, to step in if injuries hit in the playoffs. Both were recalled from the team’s AHL affiliate before Washington lost to the Red Wings and Rangers on Saturday and Sunday. Sanford didn’t score Sunday, but he made enough of an impression to keep his place in the lineup. Vrana, who didn’t play this weekend, returned Sunday to Hershey, Pa. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (TWP)

USA Gymnastics scandal spurs bill on abuse claims

XX133 1x1.75

AMATEUR SPORTS Last week, USA Gymnastics revealed that in 2015 it received a sexual abuse complaint about a longtime team doctor but waited five weeks to conduct an internal investigation before forwarding the information to authorities. A U.S. lawmaker is now crafting a bill that would establish clear protocol and require such sports organizations to report complaints immediately. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., hopes to introduce a bill soon that will spell out how amateur athletic associations respond to allegations of sexual abuse. Feinstein revealed her intentions in a “60 Minutes” segment that aired Sunday. The program centered on three former gymnasts, Jessica Howard, Jamie Dantzscher and Jeanette Antolin, who met with Feinstein and described on-air their allegations of sexual abuse by Larry Nassar, a former team physician for U.S. women’s gymnastics who faces accusations from dozens of athletes he treated. Nassar, 53, was arrested in November for allegedly sexually assaulting a child in Michigan. He was indicted a month later on federal charges of possession of child pornography. USA Gymnastics dismissed Nassar in July 2015, after its internal investigation was over. Team executives released a statement saying they’re “determined to strengthen” standards of vigilance and safety.

A woman holds a pose at a kundalini yoga class at Lighthouse Yoga Center in D.C.

Yoga for your insides CLASSES During a 75-minute kundalini yoga and meditation class at Lighthouse Yoga Center in Petworth one Saturday morning, eight women stood and bent at the waist, letting their arms hang loosely as they swung them side to side in gradually larger swoops for about seven minutes. This twist opens the shoulders and chest, instructor Julie Eisenberg told the group — pretty standard stuff for a yoga class. But this move has another goal: to “get the lymph flowing through your body to pick up toxins and get them out,” Eisenberg said. The movement is called a kriya, or sequence of exercises. Kundalini, which roughly means “energy,” is based on kriyas, which can be a static pose or a repeated movement held for three to 11 minutes. They work to stimulate not just muscles but

deeper internal systems. “When you leave, you feel lifted,” says Cathy Berry, 42, of Silver Spring, a student and teacher at Lighthouse. “It’s almost like a natural high.” Kundalini classes differ from better-known yoga styles in

several ways. You won’t find pop music coming out of the speakers, said Andrew Tanner, chief ambassador for Yoga Alliance, an Arlington-based nonprofit group representing yoga teachers, schools and studios. Instead, practitioners chant mantras through some kriyas to help them focus their minds and breathing. It’s also more accessible. “It doesn’t matter if you’re not flexible,” Eisenberg says. “You will become more flexible through practicing it, for the most part. You’ll become stronger without any doubt.” T h e m o ve m e n t s a r e n ’ t

necessarily hard, but if you do them long enough, they can be challenging, Tanner says of kriyas. “They’re not necessarily focused on, say, elongating muscles. … You’re really doing stuff to stimulate your energy.” Other benefits of kundalini are stress and blood pressure reduction and weight loss, practitioners say. The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation points to the 12-minute Kirtan Kriya singing exercise as a way to improve brain function. Kundalini came to the West only in the late 1960s. Now, it’s gaining popularity. The American College of Sports Medicine includes kundalini as one of its top 10 fitness trends for 2017. Still, kundalini makes up a small portion of yoga classes. Of the 75,053 yoga instructors registered with the Yoga Alliance, only about 500 have “kundalini” in their descriptions. In the District, the alliance lists 19 instructors with “kundalini” in their descriptions, but 2,163 instructors total. STEPHANIE KANOWITZ

We’re all stressed A survey released last week by the American Psychological Association found that Americans are feeling more stressed than in the past decade. Americans rated their stress at 5.1 on a 10-point scale in January 2017, up from 4.8 in August 2016. The stress level in the new poll is the average reported by 1,019 adults ages 18 and up. It’s the first increase in the 10 years that the association has been doing these polls. This Stress in America survey, conducted by Harris Poll, found that 66 percent of Americans reported stress about the future of the country, 57 percent about the current political climate and 49 percent about the election outcome. Minority groups had higher levels of stress about the election outcome. (TWP)

picture behaving in the office. If you’d like, pick a private time in the aftermath of one of these visits to say, “Belinda, I can tell you don’t like it when I have my kids here. Is there anything I can do to keep it from affecting you?” But be prepared that it may go nowhere. Smile, keep your kids angelic and rest assured that eye rolls are rarely the arbiter of anything.

So, your boyfriend told you what his brother said? Is he going for Rabble-Rouser of the Year? What is your boyfriend’s real view on this? Would he not find it a contradiction to have the No. 1 toastmaster be against the union? Might having an unreliable and belligerent-whendrunk best man come with its own unrelated problems? Though this brother doesn’t sound like a particularly illustrious guy, if he means enough to your boyfriend to be best man, then that’s worth talking about. And people sometimes say things they regret; people sometimes change their minds. Hey, maybe the entire conversation happened when Bro was three sheets to the wind. Consider this a test run of the many marital conflicts that may require communication and compromise, and start sooner rather than later. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. entertainment ‘The Good Wife’ spinoff is top-notch, but is it worth $5.99 a month? TELEVISION One needn’t always perk up at the words “But wait, there’s more!” Which is why it might have seemed, only nine months ago, as if we’d had our fill of the fictional law firms seen in seven seasons of Robert and Michelle King’s hit CBS drama “The Good Wife.” Even the most faithful watchers were ready to move on. But with remarkable turnaround, the Kings and their collaborators have delivered a spinoff drama, “The Good Fight,” which, in its first two episodes, proves to be a more-than-worthy successor. That’s the good news. The bad news is that “The Good

Fight” is available only via CBS All Access, the network’s subscription streaming site that costs $5.99 a month ($9.99 if you want it commercial-free). CBS aired an edited version of the pilot Sunday, but the remaining nine episodes will be released weekly on the pay site. It’s a little irksome, especially for those already paying for CBS on cable or satellite. For now, let’s get back to appraising “The Good Fight,” which is set a year or so after “The Good Wife’s” slaptastic finale. We catch up with Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), who, after her law firm has merged with two other firms, is sensing it’s a good time to retire. As she shops for a country villa in France, she works toward a settlement in her last case, representing the city in a police brutality case.

CBS

It’s too bad ‘The Good Fight’ isn’t free

Christine Baranski returns as Diane Lockhart in “The Good Fight.”

But then her lifelong friend Henry Rindell (Paul Guilfoyle), a prominent investor who manages Diane’s personal fortune, is arrested and accused of running a Bernard Madoff-like Ponzi scheme. Learning that she’s broke, Diane asks for her job

back, but she’s shown the door. Baranski, of course, is a force all her own; fans will enjoy watching Diane pick herself up and start anew. Her rescuer comes in the form of Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo), Diane’s opposing attorney on the police

brutality case and a partner at a law firm that prides itself on its all-black staff. Convincing his colleagues that she would be a strong “diversity hire,” Lindo makes Diane a junior partner. The show is by no means a retread of “The Good Wife.” Its storytelling and core values are different from its predecessor’s. Most notable is the way “The Good Fight” looks at life at a minority-owned law firm, where the money, clients and a sense of justice are not as easily won as they were at Diane’s old job. It’s a subtle but effective use of diversity that eludes CBS in its on-air programming — all the more reason to wish the show was airing for free, where more viewers might catch it, instead of being offered as an accessory. Church goes after scalpers MUSIC Country star Eric Church has been battling ticket scalpers for years as his popularity has grown and he began selling out arenas. But he’s taken his biggest step yet by cancelling more than 25,000 tickets to his spring “Holdin’ My Own” tour that were purchased by scalpers and putting them back on sale for fans to purchase. The singer said he’s going to do everything he can do to stop what he calls a criminal organization that’s making millions. “They buy thousands of tickets across the U.S., not just mine, and they end up making a fortune,” Church said. The tickets will be released at

The TOGETHER program is free and offers couples:

1 p.m. today for the remaining stops on the 60-city tour. More tickets for his May 19 show at Verizon Center go on sale Monday.

Over the years, Church has tried a variety of methods to crack down on resold tickets. He’s used paperless ticketing, where buyers show a credit card at the venue. He’s also tried increasing the prices to make tickets less appealing to resellers and has increased screening of purchases through his fan club. Church admits that a lot of these methods are arduous, but he said he doesn’t want his most loyal fans to pay inflated prices to see him perform. “Our fans know that as long as we tour, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure they pay face value for the ticket,” Church said. @TIERSAJ on the saga of #StrandedBae. On Sunday night, @__iamqueenk tweeted about how her apparent boyfriend, @KashMoneyKanee, flew her out to D.C. to celebrate Valentine’s Day. When she missed her return flight, he left her stranded at the airport while he partied with friends and another woman. @KashMoneyKanee said @__iamqueenk learned during the visit that she was getting evicted, and was trying to convince him to let her stay, which he wasn’t having. Twitter users were divided on the issue.

Zoe Saldana gives birth to very chill baby

Man-child is now too old to be a man-child Miles Teller, who turned 30 on Monday, celebrated his birthday Saturday with an “intimate dinner” followed by a party, the New York Post reported. Guests at the party, which was held at the private home of Absolut Elyx CEO Jonas Tahlin, included Nina Dobrev, Chace Crawford, Jessica Szohr and Emile Hirsch. “Revelers chowed on grilled cheese and fries,” the Post added.

Actress Zoe Saldana and her husband, Marco Perego, have welcomed their third child together, a baby boy named Zen. Saldana made the announcement Saturday on Instagram, where she shared a photo of the newborn with her 2-year-old twin sons, Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio. “Marco and I are elated to share the news of the birth of our son Zen,” Saldana captioned the photo. “We couldn’t feel more blessed with the new addition to our family. #threeboys … oh boy!” She did not mention a birth date. Saldana announced the birth of Cy and Bowie in January 2015. She married Perego, an Italian artist and former soccer player, in 2013. (EXPRESS)

Kim K finds attention comforting — wow, crazy

Lisa Marie Presley accused her estranged fourth husband, Michael Lockwood, of child abuse in court papers filed earlier this month. She also claimed he is the subject of an investigation involving hundreds of inappropriate photos of children on his computer. Lockwood has not been charged with anything and his lawyer said the accusations are inaccurate. (AP/EXPRESS)

As a guest on Monday’s “Ellen,” Kris Jenner said that her daughter Kim found it “therapeutic” to resume filming their family reality show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” following her highly publicized robbery in Paris last October. “When we started filming again and getting up and running … what was coming out of that was very therapeutic for her, I think. To just explain to us and walk us through,” Jenner said. (EXPRESS)
