Residents wade through floodwaters Tuesday after hours of torrential rain in Jakarta, Indonesia. Thousands of homes were inundated and an untold number of vehicles were disabled. In East Jakarta, water was 5 feet deep in some places. Two deaths were reported.

The Michelin Guide has accidently awarded one of its coveted stars to a lowly cafe in Bourges, France, that shares its name with an elite restaurant 93 miles away. The guide confused “Le Bouche a Oreilles,” which serves burgers and fries, with “Le Bouche a Oreille” in Boutervilliers, which boasts an award-winning chef. Veronique Jacquet, owner of the modest brasserie, laughed and said her place has “nothing to do with a gourmet restaurant.” (AP)
A Pennsylvania college student got a reminder to take out the trash when his mother sent him some garbage in a care package. Connor Cox, 18, said his mom sent him two boxes last month at Westminster College. One box contained food and other goodies; the other contained garbage. When he called to ask if that was a mistake, Cox’s mother, Connie, told him, “No, that’s the trash you were supposed to take out” during a recent visit. (AP)

Mar-a-Lago 3, Camp David 0 THURMONT, MD. Dwayne Snurr, a janitor and lifelong resident of this rural, working-class town 60 miles from the White House, was eating chicken wings in a cafe off Main Street last week when he began chewing over a locally important subject: President Trump’s taste in vacations. “I guess he’s got that place down in Florida,” Snurr said, referring to Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Palm Beach resort. “When you have a place like that, I have to assume you prefer the beach.” Trump’s Florida compound and his other gold-laden properties have been top of mind lately in Thurmont, where just a few miles up a winding mountain road presidents have vacationed and cajoled world leaders at Camp David — deep in the woods, in cozy cabins, a total anathema to Trump. “Camp David is very rustic, it’s nice, you’d like it,” Trump said in an interview with a European journalist just before taking office. “You know how long you’d

like it? For about 30 minutes.” White House officials have not said whether Trump plans to use Camp David or, if not, whether he would close the facility. Although local officials hope he will visit, they have been given no signals that he will, raising concern about the financial and symbolic costs of the president’s getaway tastes. “When you have a president who owns exclusive resorts, it’s hard to believe Camp David will be used,” said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley. The risk is that, over time,

“Camp David will no longer be this great getaway for presidents or a diplomatic hub for important matters,” Brinkley said. “It’s in a holding pattern right now.” Presidents’ use of the property has varied, according to CBS News correspondent and informal White House chronicler Mark Knoller. The Reagans loved it, spending 517 days there. So did George W. Bush, who racked up 487 days. The Obamas spent only 93 days there. Former first lady Michelle Obama once explained that her husband was more of an “urban guy” than a nature lover (the fact that there’s only a onehole golf course probably didn’t help make it a big draw for the links-loving former president). Both those factors might be reasons for Trump, an avid golfer and Manhattanite, to stay away. Another reason? That solitude that many past presidents have loved will likely be a negative for Trump, who seems to revel in being around people. Metro GM says budget is near a tipping point

TRANSPORTATION The year-long effort to restore Metro to a state of good repair has added to the troubled agency’s financial problems, creating a projected $125 million revenue shortfall for the current fiscal year, the agency said Tuesday. That, combined with a $290 million budget gap for the coming fiscal year, led General Manager Paul Wiedefeld to declare that the agency’s budget woes are “fast approaching” a tipping point. While the year-long SafeTrack maintenance plan is meant to help improve safety and reliability, its planned service disruptions have caused riders to flee the system. Many say that for all the inconveniences of SafeTrack, they’ve yet to see any improvement in reliability. “Ridership was down broadly across all time periods, days of the week, and individual stations,” Metro said in documents that will be presented to the agency’s board Thursday. Passenger revenue thus far is $64 million below budget estimates, which had projected a slight increase in ridership this fiscal year. Passenger and parking fees had been expected to bring in about $839 million, according to the approved budget. Wiedefeld said SafeTrack, reliability issues and other factors such as low fuel prices, increased teleworking and competition have driven riders away at historic rates.

THE DISTRICT First, they dragged the huge bunches of bamboo down the path from the panda house to serve as munchies for the long journey. Then came Bao Bao herself, inside a white shipping crate, borne on a yellow forklift decorated with black panda ears. Then came the cortege of zookeepers who had cared for the giant panda for the past 31/2 years. It was a solemn moment at the National Zoo on Tuesday, as those who had fed and marveled at the panda bade her farewell. The workers who had swept her compound and picked up her waste swore she knew them individually. They waved goodbye as the people from FedEx loaded the food and the crate holding the 205-pound bear into the trucks that would take her to the airport. And they all hugged. Bao Bao, the zoo’s beloved female giant panda, left for her new home in China shortly before 2 p.m. after a string of farewells at the zoo and at Dulles International Airport. “We know it’s coming,” said keeper Stacey Tabellario, who had helped take care of Bao Bao since the panda was born in 2013. “It’s something that, especially with the giant pandas, you know exactly when this is coming,” she said. “We know that they’re going … by the age of 4. So we can prepare for it. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t get attached.” “She’s on to bigger and better things, but certainly there were some tears this morning as we all watched her get loaded onto the truck,” Tabellario said. Dennis Kelly, director of the zoo, called it a “really bittersweet day. … While it represents a huge success, we’ve become so fond of

U.S. Park Police and National Park Service officials said the four sites had graffiti markings that were similar in nature and not considered to be political or racial. The vandalism was scrawled in black permanent marker. Two messages were at the Lincoln Memorial — one in the memorial and another at the foot of the steps.
Other acts of vandalism were found on street signs and utility boxes on the Mall. Some of the words in the messages were hard to decipher. One message said, “Jackie shot JFK.” Another mentioned the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. And another part of the graffiti said that “blood test is a lie” and mentioned leukemia, cancer and HIV, saying, “get second opinion.” Sgt. ‘Grandma oysters’ to the bay’s rescue? A researcher at William & Mary says that “big, honkin’ grandma oysters” could improve the Chesapeake Bay’s oyster stock. Geology professor Rowan Lockwood says in a university press release that larger, older oysters produce more offspring. And some studies suggest they’re more tolerant to disease. Lockwood is recommending a change in regulations that would protect the larger, more fertile oysters from harvest. The university says current rules protect the younger, smaller ones. Lockwood also suggests increasing the size and number of oyster sanctuaries in the bay. She has been studying fossils of the bay’s ancient oysters, which grew larger and lived decades longer than today’s shellfish. (AP)

The proposal by council members Mary Cheh and Jack Evans would offer the same benefits offered in the existing law. The existing law would increase employer-paid taxes by 0.62 percent. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ben Cline would have prohibited the state health department from providing money to any entity that performs abortions not covered by Medicaid. The money would be redirected to other health clinics. IMMIGRATION Many more people living in the United States illegally could face rapid deportation — including people simply arrested for traffic violations — under a sweeping rewrite of U.S. immigration enforcement policies announced Tuesday by the Trump administration. Any immigrant who is in the country illegally and is charged or convicted of any offense, or even suspected of a crime, will now be an enforcement priority, according to Homeland Security Department memos signed by Secretary John Kelly. That could include people arrested for shoplifting or minor offenses. Under the Obama administration guidance, immigrants whose only violation was being in the country illegally were generally left alone. Those immigrants fall into two categories: those who crossed the border without permission and those who overstayed their visas. Crossing the border illegally is a criminal offense, and the new memos make clear that those who have done so are on the broad list
send some people caught illegally crossing the Mexican border back to Mexico, regardless of where they are from. Those foreigners would wait in that country for U.S. deportation proceedings to be complete. This would be used for people who aren’t considered a threat to cross the border illegally again, the memo says. That provision is almost

certain to face opposition, and it’s unclear whether the U.S. has the authority to force Mexico to accept third-country nationals. But the memo also calls for Homeland Security to provide an account of U.S. aid to Mexico, a possible signal that Trump plans to use that funding to get Mexico to accept the foreigners. The administration also plans to expand immigration jail capacity. Currently, Homeland Security has money and space to jail 34,000 immigrants at a time. It’s unclear how much an increase would cost. The enforcement memos also call for the hiring of 5,000 new Border Patrol agents and 10,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, but it’s unclear how quickly that could take place. Currently, two of every three applicants for Customs and Border Protection jobs fail polygraph exams and there are about 2,000 vacancies. The directives do not affect former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that has protected more than 750,000 young immigrants from deportation, though participants could be deported if they commit crimes or are deemed to be threats, according to the department. Riots break out in Sweden after Trump’s speech Just two days after President Trump provoked consternation by seeming to imply, incorrectly, that immigrants had caused a spate of violence in Sweden, riots broke out in a predominantly immigrant neighborhood in the suburbs of Stockholm. The neighborhood, Rinkeby, was the scene of riots in 2010 and 2013. Monday night, Swedish police made an arrest on drug charges, and word of the arrest spiraled into a riot. Over four hours, the crowd burned about half a dozen cars, vandalized several shop fronts and threw rocks at police. Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter newspaper reported that an officer fired shots at a rioter but missed. A photographer for the newspaper was attacked and beaten by more than a dozen men and his camera was stolen. In 2015, when the influx of refugees and migrants to Europe from Africa, the Middle East and Asia was at its peak, Sweden took in the greatest number per capita. Integration has been a success story there, except for incidents like Monday night’s. Crime statistics analyzed by the Swedish newspaper for October 2015 to January 2016 concluded that refugees were responsible for only 1 percent of all criminal incidents, but the perception persists, even among Swedes, that foreigners carry out the vast majority of crimes. Malaysia’s director general of health said pathologists were awaiting test results to determine the Kim Jong Nam cause of death. Kim Han Sol, the 20-something son of Kim Jong Nam, was thought to have arrived in Kuala Lumpur late Monday. The case has caused a diplomatic row between North Korea and Malaysia. No member of Kim Jong Nam’s family had come forward to verify his identity through DNA testing or to claim his body. The developments added to the questions surrounding the death of Kim Jong Nam, 45, who was ambushed at Kuala Lumpur airport last week as he went to check in for a flight. Poison apparently was applied to his face, authorities said. Initial reports suggested that he had been injected with a poison needle.

Office policy on politics Federal workers look for guidance on what kind of expression is allowed in Trump era
Gen. McMaster expected to be ‘voice of reason’
THINKSTOCK /EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
POLITICS Federal offices are supposed to be politically neutral places, removed from partisanship because the government serves the public. But a month into the new administration, civil servants are more politicized than ever. And they’re seeking guidance in record numbers about what they can and cannot do to express themselves without risking their jobs. Their questions are flooding the phone lines and email inbox of the Office of Special Counsel, an obscure, independent federal agency that acts as a watchdog for civil service protections and monitors political activity in the federal workforce. “Our inbox has exploded,” said Ana Galindo-Marrone, an attorney at the office who is in charge of monitoring compliance with the Hatch Act, the 1939 law that prohibits civil servants from directly supporting candidates or political parties. Galindo-Marrone says she’s receiving as many as two dozen queries a day from employees and their managers about what they can say, email and tweet about the new president — both for and against Donald Trump and his policies. “People are still very emotional about the results of the election,” she said. “They want to know what’s permissible. I’m hearing from rank-and-file employees asking whether they can wear a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat at the office.” Some managers have wrongly told their employees that a hat bearing Trump’s campaign logo is not allowed, she said. Here’s how the law works: Civil servants are free to opine
on the president and his policies. What they can’t do is engage in political activity that works for or against a candidate or a party. “Every single day, people are talking about it,” said a California-based scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. “People are wondering, ‘Can we talk to people? What can we say to the public?’ ” The conversation at NOAA has ranged from whether the staff can send emails about the “March for Science” planned for April from their government accounts to how they should discuss climate change with members of the public they encounter on the job. The consensus for now, the scientist said: Don’t say you think the administration has lost its way with its skepticism of global warming. Say instead, “The science is telling us this.” Scientists want to know whether they’ll be fired for

The answer: They won’t, as long as they protest on their own time. Not all are asking whether they can criticize Trump, though. At many agencies, they want to express support. “People are so polarized right now on both sides,” said Brandon Coleman, an addiction therapist at the VA Medical Center in Phoenix who voted for Trump. A Hillary Clinton doll in the shape of a nutcracker with a U.S. flag backdrop sits on Coleman’s desk with the logo, “Is America Ready for This Nutcracker?” He plans to keep it there. “If we just talked more about our views on political issues, I think it would help,” Coleman said. “The culture here is people are afraid to say their views. But that’s exactly what we should be doing.” LISA REIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
POLITICS President Trump’s choice of an outspoken but non-political Army general as national security adviser is a nod to pragmatism. Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, 54, is an independent-minded soldier widely admired for his leadership skills, but he is short on experience in Washington’s trenches. His appointment reinforces the more mainstream approach to security that Trump is getting from Pentagon chief Jim Mattis, who seems to have steered the administration toward support for NATO. Still, it’s an open question how McMaster will fare in a White House that has set up what some call a parallel power structure led by Stephen Bannon. As Trump’s chief strategist, Bannon, the conservative media executive with outspoken views about Islam, has a seat on the National Security Council’s principals committee in a restructuring that puts him on equal footing with Cabinet members like Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Peter R. Mansoor, a retired Army colonel who served with McMaster in Iraq during the 2007 surge of U.S. troops, said he expects McMaster to be a “voice of reason” and a natural ally to Mattis. “He absolutely does not view Islam as the enemy,” Mansoor said, adding that McMaster believes that in the war against extremism, “we need to have Muslim nations on our side.” ROBERT BURNS (AP)

Milo Yiannopoulos resigns from Breitbart MEDIA Milo Yiannopoulos, the incendiary writer and commentator who helped make Breitbart News a leading organ of the “alt-right,” resigned from the news organization Tuesday after a video of him endorsing pedophilia surfaced online over the weekend. Yiannopoulos has been a flame-throwing provocateur whose writing has offended women, Muslims, blacks and gay people ever since former Breitbart executive chairman Stephen K. Bannon hired him as a senior editor in 2014.
His resignation came after the Conservative Political Action Conference canceled him as an upcomYiannopoulos ing speaker over the video. Simon & Schuster also canceled an agreement to publish his forthcoming memoir. Breitbart was under pressure to take action against Yiannopoulos, 32, by its own staff, which had threatened an internal revolt, according to people familiar with the discussions. In the video, which was from

Study: Candles lose fight with mosquitoes Before you stock up on citronella candles and other mosquito repellents ahead of summer, you might want to find out if they even work. In a study published last week in the Journal of Insect Science, researchers at New Mexico State University tested 11 common types of repellents — five sprays, five wearable devices and a citronella candle — on Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which can carry Zika, yellow fever, dengue and other diseases. The scientists used human bait at the end of a wind tunnel to lure in the annoying insects. The results? Candles, bracelets and high-frequency sound devices proved completely ineffective in warding off the pests. Sprays of DEET and oil of lemon eucalyptus were very effective, and the OFF! Clip-On was the only wearable device that worked. (EXPRESS)
early 2016, Yiannopoulos bantered with the hosts of a podcast called “The Drunken Peasants.” He condoned sexual relations with boys as young as 13 and joked about a sexual encounter he said he had with a Catholic priest as a teen. Yiannopoulos defended himself on Facebook as the tide of controversy rose. “I do not support pedophilia. Period,” he wrote Sunday. In a statement about his resignation, Yiannopoulos said he didn’t want his “poor choice of words” to detract from Brietbart’s reporting. PAUL FARHI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ZAWIYA, LIBYA | Rescue workers Monday recover some of the bodies of 74 African migrants that washed ashore on a popular smuggling route to Europe. Officials said Tuesday that traffickers took the engine from the rubber boat they used and left it to drift. Another 12 people were presumed drowned; the sole survivor was in a coma Tuesday.

WASHINGTONPOST.COM WORLDVIEWS
Eagles in France are training to destroy drones Under French military supervision, four golden eagle chicks hatched last year atop drones — as part of a program that adapts the ancient art of falconry to the threats of unmanned flight. Terrorists have been modifying drones, which can be bought in toy stores, into weapons and radio-controlled spies, The Associated Press reported. The French have been concerned since early 2015, when drones flew over the presidential palace and a restricted military site, according to Agence France-Presse. Trained eagles were presented as a way to take down drones without shooting at them. The eagles in the program — named d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis — grew up with drones. They chased drones through grass and were rewarded with meat, which they ate off the backs of the drones. By February, they were capable of intercepting drones in lightning-fast horizontal chases. When the eagles were ready — this month — d’Artagnan launched screeching from a military control tower across a field, AFP reported. The bird covered 200 meters in 20 seconds, slamming into a drone, then diving with the wreckage into the tall grass. The military has already ordered a second brood of eagles, AFP reported. AVI SELK

Switch-hitting catcher Matt Wieters is expected to add balance to the Nationals’ lineup.
SPRING TRAINING
If all goes well and it becomes official, the deal finally grounds the former Orioles staple after he spent this offseason in an unexpected holding pattern. Wieters’ arrival also changes dramatically the complexion of the Nationals’ winter. Even when it became clear that catcher Wilson Ramos and his power would head elsewhere, the Nationals weren’t vigorous in their pursuit of Wieters. People inside the organization didn’t consider him worth top-tier catcher money.
Why the long wait? As an accomplished free agent, Matt Wieters began the offseason in search of a long-term deal for more than $10 million a year. Catchers Brian McCann and Russell Martin, got five-year deals worth more than $80 million at similar points in their careers. Wieters seemed likely to earn the same, but the market soured on big-power types like him, and his value plummeted. As training camps opened last week, he remained one of the only marquee free agents unsigned, seemingly lowering his price point dramatically. (TWP).
But given the relationship owner Ted Lerner and general manager Mike Rizzo have with Wieters’ agent, Scott Boras, a signing never seemed farfetched. That price turned out to be $10.5 million for one year with the potential for $21 million over two, according to a person familiar with the situation.
What the Nationals get in Wieters is a four-time All-Star with a .256 career average and two Gold Gloves. The Nationals do not value awards like those too highly, but awards aren’t won by accident, either. Health is a knock against Wieters, who had Tommy John surgery in 2014, but he played in at least 130 games in every season before the procedure. Last year, in his first full season back, he played in 124 games for the Orioles and hit .243 with 17 homers. He has a career .801 OPS against left-handed pitching and a .716 OPS against righties. The switch-hitter can provide the Nationals the right-handed power they need, while also giving them a potential starting lineup of four lefties and four righties against right-handed starters. In other words, Wieters brings balance. And after what was a slow and sometimes puzzling winter, the Nationals now look like smart shoppers. JORGE CASTILLO AND

MLB The Nationals agreed to terms Tuesday with catcher Matt Wieters on a two-year deal. The agreement gives Wieters, 30, a chance to opt out after this season and hit free agency again next winter, and therefore amounts to one year guaranteed with the possibility for a second. The deal isn’t official, as it is pending a physical, but would include $5 million in deferred money, a recent staple of the Nationals’ more high-profile free agent signings.

Lakers owner dismisses Mitch Kupchak as GM and her brother as VP NBA The Lakers fired general manager Mitch Kupchak on Tuesday and put Magic Johnson in charge of basketball operations in a major shake-up of the struggling franchise’s front office. Lakers owner Jeanie Buss also removed her brother, Jim, from his job as executive vice president of basketball operations. Jeanie Buss then promoted Johnson, the Hall of Fame point guard who returned to the franchise earlier this year in an executive role. Johnson is now president of basketball operations, reporting directly to Jeanie Buss.
The Lakers are 19-39 this season after a 10-10 start under new coach Luke Walton. In a statement, Jeanie Buss said she “took a series of actions I believe will return the Lakers to the heights Dr. Jerry Buss demanded and our fans rightly expect,” referring to her father, the late Lakers owner. She also said the search for a new GM “is well underway.” Kupchak, a former Lakers center, had been the franchise’s general manager since 2000, constructing teams that won four of the franchise’s 16 NBA titles after Jerry West left the club. Kupchak had been in the Lakers’ front office for 30 years, including the last 17 as GM — the longest current stretch running a front office in the NBA.
Jim Buss was in the Lakers’ front office for 19 years, including 12 in charge of basketball operations alongside Kupchak. The Lakers are mired in the worst four-year stretch in franchise history, missing the playoffs in three consecutive years with their three worst records ever. Jim Buss vowed several years ago to leave the franchise if they weren’t in contention for a conference title by this year or next. Johnson has never been a decision-making NBA executive, but he has been a successful businessman and investor. He dropped a ceremonial title as a team vice president last June after his frequent criticisms of Jim Buss and former coaches. Johnson sold his ownership stake in 2010. GREG BEACHAM (AP)
During a timeout just before halftime in No. 12 West Virginia’s 77-62 win over visiting Texas on Monday night, Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins fell to his knees and clutched his chest. It was a scary scene, but Huggins, 63, coached the second half. After the game, he said the defibrillator he had implanted after a 2002 heart attack went off. Huggins has an irregular heartbeat, and the device shocks his heart into beating regularly again when it senses something is amiss. Huggins’ players knew he was fine when he pointed at one of the referees and joked, “You did this to me.” (TWP)

INTERNATIONAL NBA PLAYERS
The number of international players from 41 countries who were on opening-day rosters this season in the NBA. The Jazz opened the season with a league-high seven international players, and seven other teams began with six. With the help of Boris Diaw and Rudy Gobert, who are teammates on the French national team, Utah entered the All-Star break in fifth place in the Western Conference. Gobert has emerged as a defensive player of the year candidate. He has scored off 190 assists this season; 26 have come from Diaw. Games resume Thursday. (AP) D.C. Romo has two obvious suitors if he’s released NFL If the Cowboys do what quarterback Tony Romo reportedly expects and put his NFL future in his hands by cutting him, Denver and Houston become obvious landing spots. There shouldn’t be any dark-horse candidates in the Romo derby. He turns 37 in April and must find a Super Bowlready team that’s a high-level quarterback away from being a championship contender. That list begins and ends with the Broncos and Texans. The Broncos have sent signals about lukewarm interest in Romo. But that would be subject to change should Romo be released, and thus cost far less to acquire. Denver ranked fourth in total defense in 2016 and should remain excellent under first-year coach Vance Joseph. Romo would have capable receivers in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, but the Broncos were 25th in the league in sacks per pass attempt and 27th in rushing offense this past season. Could Romo last under those circumstances? There would be fewer issues with the Texans. Houston led the NFL in total defense this past season even without the injured J.J. Watt. QB Brock Osweiler’s $72 million contract creates a slight dilemma, but it’s nothing that couldn’t be overcome. The Texans were 11th in sacks per pass attempt and eighth in rushing offense in 2016. The Gyro Copter, manufactured there, was a predecessor to the helicopter, hence the development’s name. The site is near the eastern edge of the Columbia Heights neighborhood on a block of unpretentious rowhouses, some with basement apartments and many of which have been renovated. It’s a modest area in transition to one with an upscale vibe. The Washington Monument is visible from atop all the roof decks in the development. D.C. landmark: T here a re 15 units. So this space is unique to work in, and we wanted to honor its history and at the same time make it modern.” Remnants of the old were deliberately melded with contemporary design. For example, wood beams cross the ceiling here and there. Wide sliding barn doors are installed on the coat closet near the entry and in the master bathroom. Pour distilled white vinegar into a dishwasher-safe cup and place it upright on an empty dishwasher’s top rack. Run a full cycle with the hot-water setting. Next, deodorize the machine by sprinkling a cup of baking soda on the bottom of the tub and running the dishwasher on a half-cycle with hot water. Leave the door open for a few hours afterward to air it out.
Remove everything from your refrigerator quarterly so you can wipe down the inside. While you’re at it, toss anything past its prime. Wipe and deodorize shelves with a solution of 1 quart of warm water and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. If you can, pull the refrigerator away from the wall and vacuum dust and dirt that has collected. When you’re ready to refill your refrigerator, don’t overstuff it. You need room to let cool air circulate, which will keep food at a safe temperature. But don’t leave your refrigerator too empty, either: It needs to have some items inside to maintain a low temperature. Those items will absorb the warm air that enters when you open the door.
Run an empty load with hot water and about a cup of distilled white vinegar to sanitize the basin and wipe out any lingering germs. If you have a front-loading machine, leave the door open between washes to let the machine’s interior dry.

‘Weird Al’: Music’s real superstar How the parody nerd eclipsed (almost) every star he’s ever mocked
MUSIC One day last summer, LinManuel Miranda, on break from “Hamilton,” stopped by neighbor Jimmy Fallon’s house in the Hamptons. They both love music, so it wasn’t long before they were sharing another passion: “Weird Al” Yankovic. “I said, ‘Do you know “Polka Party!”?’ ” Fallon says. “He’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I know it word for word.’ ” Fallon threw Yankovic’s 1986 record on, and the two sang along to an accordion-driven medley that covers 12 songs in three minutes, from Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” to Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach.” “Picture Jimmy Fallon and I sitting in a basement laughing our asses off singing, ‘I’m gonna keep my baby, keep my baby, keep my baby,’ ” Miranda says. And they’re not alone. Yankovic has sold millions of albums, played 1,616 shows and outlasted so many of the stars he once spoofed. His most recent album, 2014’s “Mandatory Fun,” featured parodies of Iggy Azalea, Lorde and Pharrell Williams, a polka medley and a smattering of original songs. The album hit
No. 1. At 57, he’s now readying ying a complete set of his 14 studio udio recordings, plus an album m of bonus tracks. “Squeeze Box,” ” on sale through a PledgeMusic drive rive until the end of the month, will come in an accordion-shaped box. ox. For Chris Hardwick — the he comic who created the Nerddist empire and hosts two game me shows, “@midnight” and “The he Wall” — Yankovic is more than a musical success story. He’s a triumph for oddballs and outsiders. “When you’re young,” he says, “you kind of wonder: ‘What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I like the same things other kids like? I must be broken or flawed.’ And then you see this guy who is like, ‘Yeah, me neither, and it’s okay but we can f--- with these people, but in a friendly way, not in a toxic way.’ ” And Yankovic is, at heart, a nerd. His parents got him started in music, buying him an accordion just before his seventh birthday. “My father was very outgoing and gregarious, and my mother was kind of withdrawn and softspoken,” Yankovic says. “Both sides of my personality are there.” Even later on, after arriving at California Polytechnic State University in the fall of 1976, he and his friends did oddball performances at the student union. “We’d be playing, like, Tom Lehrer covers, and we’d do a

Desperate for approval “Weird Al” Yanko Yankovic ic takes pride in asking artists before parodying their work. He had trouble reaching Iggy Azalea, however, so he decided to fly to her show in Colorado and work his way backstage. “I kind of jumped in front of her and said: ‘Iggy, hi. I’m “Weird Al” Yankovic and I’d love to do a parody of your song.’ She looked at me like a deer in headlights … and she said, ‘Oh, well, I would need to see the lyrics.’ And I said, ‘I happen to have them right here.’ I pulled them out of my pocket. She glanced at them for several seconds and then said, ‘Looks fine with me.’ ” G.E.
medley of every song written in the world, or we’d segue from ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’ into the theme from ‘The Odd Couple,’ ” he says. “Just random and stupid, and people were looking at us like we were from outer space.” That’s just what cast Yankovic to stardom. “He made people stop and look

at the TV and say, ‘What the hell was that?’ ” says Les Garland Garland, MTV’s head of programming during the 1980s. “Every type of research that we did — familiarity. Do you like it? Are you getting enough of it? Do you want more? — the numbers were huge. And from that, he absolutely was an MTV star.” By next year, Yankovic plans to return to the road, but the shows will be more intimate than past tours. The idea is to connect more with his fans. That is something that comes natural to him. Backstage in San Francisco at Sketchfest, a comedy festival he’s speaking at, a family is ushered in to pose for pictures. Jill Gould, a longtime fan, makes a request: “Can I touch your hair?” Yankovic doesn’t groan or pause. Instead, his eyes widen, he tilts his head and says, “Can I touch your hair?” And they stand there smiling, fingers running through locks. GEOFF EDGERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)
In the video for “Chained to the Rhythm,” Katy Perry wanders around a sunny, futuristic theme park called Oblivia, where everyone is in a dreamy haze, oblivious to how scary the world around them is. “So comfortable, we’re living in a bubble, bubble/ So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble,” the pop star sings. Weird — it’s like she’s trying to warn us about something. BRYANNA CAPPADONA (EXPRESS)
‘Love’ Lana Del Rey
The video for “Love,” the first single from Lana Del Rey’s fifth album, is a visual ode to being, as she puts it, “young and in love.” It unfolds in a retro, dream-like sequence, weaving shots of Del Ray performing on the moon with a montage of young people floating around space and exploring beautiful distant planets. It may suggest that young love is — wait for it — out of this world. B.C.

entertainment Tracks on Son Volt’s “Notes of Blue” meld hints of blues with the band’s familiar alt-country sound.
SON VOLT
verbatim
Son Volt’s latest lingers in familiar territory ‘Notes of Blue’ doesn’t Sign of the times Son Volt’s Jay Farrar told Rolling stray too far from the Stone that today’s political climate, alt-country band’s roots more than ever, inspired his lyrics. ALBUM REVIEW If the late Merle Haggard is the defining voice of country music, Jay Farrar might be the artist you’d turn to if you had to explain the Americana genre through the work of just one singer. Farrar is the creative force behind Son Volt, a band he put together in the mid-1990s after he and Jeff Tweedy dissolved Uncle Tupelo. His singing style calls to mind back-road landscapes and somewhere-in-Louisiana weariness with a style so distinctive that it helped redefine the contours of the genre.
“I wake up every day, read the news and then ask myself, ‘What would Woody Guthrie say about these current times?’ “ he said. “Since November, I’ve been writing more songs than usual trying to make sense of what’s going on.” (EXPRESS)
Having given birth to the term “alt-country,” the signature Son Volt sound lives again on “Notes of Blue,” released last week. It’s a mature album that builds on previous milestones to explore new dimensions of the blues. And while the experimentation
sometimes diminishes the band’s power, there is a payoff in traversing the new territory with Farrar. The song order seems significant. The first two cuts, “Promise the World” and “Back Against the Wall,” invite listeners in with an earthy blend reminiscent of Son Volt’s powerful early work. After that the album grows more daring but less accessible, mixing blues stylings influenced by Mississippi Fred McDowell and Skip James with unorthodox tunings and other musical adventures. In its best moments, though, “Notes of Blue” will carry you back to the old Son Volt material, evoking mountain ranges and back roads and lonely all-night drives. SCOTT STROUD (AP)
“It’s a political time, so I imagine the Oscars will look exactly like your Twitter or Facebook feed. Why should we ignore for three hours what we’re talking about 24 hours a day?” LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA,

At last, typewriters find relevancy
Tom Hanks’ first book, “Uncommon Type: Some Stories” — a collection of 17 short stories, each in some way involving a different typewriter — will hit shelves on Oct. 24. Among the stories written by Hanks, who owns over 100 typewriters, is one about an immigrant arriving in New York City, another about a bowler who becomes a celebrity and another about an eccentric billionaire. Hanks says he began work on the book’s stories in 2015. (AP)

Essence honors Hollywood’s ‘new and next’ AWARDS When Issa Rae, above, watched Oprah Winfrey being honored at Essence magazine’s Black Women in Hollywood Awards last year, the actress hoped she would one day be recognized in the same fashion. But she didn’t think it would come this soon. Rae, Janelle Monae, Aja Naomi King and Yara Shahidi will be honored Thursday in Los Angeles at the magazine’s 10th annual awards. “I used to say, ‘It would be so cool to be up there,’ but I didn’t imagine it now,” says Rae, creator and star of HBO’s “Insecure.” “I was thinking maybe after a couple more films, a couple TV shows under my belt. … That’s really what I thought. It’s just so encouraging to be awarded so early in my career. But that’s what Essence does. It gets behind and supports black women. Now I feel like I can be on that journey.” This year’s awards are setting out to recognize “Hollywood’s Next Generation.” “These women are making their own waves,” says Vanessa K. De Luca, editor-in-chief of Essence. “We think about who’s had a stellar year. We think about who’s been working quietly behind the scenes forever and deserves recognition. We think about who are going to be the women to pick up the mantle. We think about who are new and next. This year, we are taking a look at the new Hollywood.” JONATHAN LANDRUM JR. (AP)
