Hands-on history in Virginia LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA. This crumbling, wood-sided house looks out of place in Ashburn, Va., where the former farming community has been eaten up by fast-growing suburbia. It sits across the street from a convenience store and adjacent to land that soon will be the new campus of the Loudoun School for the Gifted, a small private school. But as students from the School for the Gifted have learned, this small building holds a lot of local history. It once housed the Ashburn Colored School, an institution dedicated to educating black children. The one-room schoolhouse — where a single teacher taught as many as 50 students ages 6 to 17 — reflects the state’s tormented history of segregation, when black students were barred from attending school with whites and were often given short shrift on textbooks and facilities. Shailee Sran, an eighth-grader, said that seeing the schoolhouse and feeling the chill of the winter inside the building drove home for her the poor conditions

classmates are working to preserve the building, raising funds and consulting preservation experts in the hope of eventually restoring it and opening it to the public so that students can learn more about Ashburn’s educational history. The students will be directing the efforts nearly every step of the way, choosing how to restore the flooring and the windows and attempting to discern what color the structure was originally painted. They have the help of preservation specialists who are volunteering their time to teach the students. And the students are going to meet Yvonne Neal, 83, who attended the school. “It’s up to four high school students to figure out what it should look like in the end,” said Gwyneth McCrae, a 17-year-old junior. “That’s a lot of pressure.” The Ashburn Colored School opened in approximately 1892 and did not close until the late 1950s, when Loudoun County built another school for black students. Property records indicate that parts of the building were listed in “poor” condition for three decades before it was closed. MORIAH BALINGIT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA. An Army staff sergeant has admitted to shooting his wife and three police officers who showed up at his front door, including a rookie officer working her first shift who died from her wounds, according to court records. Ronald Hamilton, 32, of Woodbridge, is charged with capital murder in Officer Ashley Guindon’s shooting death Saturday. He also faces a murder charge in the shooting death of his wife, Crystal Hamilton, 29. An affidavit filed Monday states that officers arrived at the Hamiltons’ home in reference to a 911 domestic dispute call, and were shot with a rifle after Hamilton met the officers at the front door. The affidavit says that more officers conducted a sweep of the home after Hamilton was brought under control, and they found Crystal Hamilton’s body in a bedroom. “The accused made statements to law enforcement officers stating that he shot his wife and the police officers,” according to the affidavit. Guindon died of rifle wounds to the right arm and torso, medical examiner Nancy Bull said.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert said after Monday’s hearing that Guindon’s death has been especially tough on the law enforcement community and the county as a whole. “It’s an officer’s worst nightmare to go on a routine call and end up dead,” he said. “It’s taken a toll on everyone. There are very few dry eyes in that department.” Ebert has been the county’s top prosecutor for 48 years and has handled numerous high-profile cases, including Beltway sniper John Allen Muhammad. Ebert declined to discuss details of the case. In court, he said Hamilton had been charged with assault in another state, but he did not discuss the charge in detail.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is partnering with Howard University to breathe new life into the school’s iconic Founders Library. The nonprofit organization on Monday named the library a national treasure, a designation that ensures the group will work to preserve the character of the historic building. The trust is helping the university develop a renovation strategy to repurpose underutilized spaces in the library and add more research technology. The organization is assembling a team of preservation architects and business leaders to secure the funding to implement that plan, explained Brent Leggs, senior field officer at the trust.

Crystal Hamilton told her son to run away just before she was shot, said her sister, Wendy Howard. The boy heard the shots but did not see them, Howard said in a phone interview. “He’s trying to come through. He’s a strong kid,” Howard said. Hamilton made separate initial appearances Monday in court. Hamilton said little during the hearing, except to request a court-appointed attorney. court-ap

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. The Charlottesville man facing murder charges in the slayings of two college women is expected to plead guilty this week, according two people familiar with the negotiations. Jesse Matthew Jr., 33, is scheduled to appear in Albemarle County on Wednesday and expected to enter pleas involving Hannah Graham, a University of Virginia sophomore who was found dead in 2014, and Morgan Harrington, a Virginia Tech
student whose body was discovered in a field in Albemarle County in 2010. Without the plea agreement, he could have faced the death penalty in the Graham case had he been convicted at trial. He’s already serving life in prison for a sexual assault in Fairfax County. He was scheduled for trial in the slaying of Harrington next year. In a letter to the media, Albemarle County commonwealth attorney Robert N. Tracci wrote that Matthew “will be entering pleas of guilty to resolve both the Hannah Graham and Morgan Harrington abduction and murder cases.”

Nasty moments mark Trump rally at Radford
From left, Republican presidential candidates Marco Rubio, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz have gone on the offensive ahead of key state primaries.
A race to the bottom Name-calling by GOP candidates reaches new low heading into Super Tuesday
POLITICS There’s talk of bad spray tans, sweat and urination. Accusations that a rival has ties to the mob. They’ve called one another “little” or “a con artist.” And they all agree that the other guys are liars. In the run-up to today’s Super Tuesday, Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas have hurled deeply personal attacks about one another’s appearances and personal backgrounds — amounting to a level of petty and profane discourse unprecedented in a presidential campaign. Voters express more sorrow than anger as the insults fly, while GOP leaders fear that the tone of the race could have longer-term implications. “I had hoped that this would be a campaign only about ideas and a vision for tomorrow. . . . But … this has been a very different election year,” Rubio told supporters Sunday in Purcellville, Va. The name-calling has long been the province of Trump, who
has elevated the insult-tweet to an art form. But now, Trump’s two main rivals — particularly Rubio — have suddenly joined in, personally attacking the billionaire GOP front-runner, as Trump is poised for big wins in today’s primaries. “I never thought I would see the Republican Party come to this, to act like children,” said Gail Garner, 67, who attended a Rubio rally Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. “It sounds like a bunch of kindergartners messing around on the playground.” Party elders said they worry about how Rubio and others are now adopting his tactics. Former Senate majority leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., a supporter of Ohio Gov. John Kasich, said he’s “totally embarrassed by a lot of the things Trump has said, and I understand why Rubio is swinging to the fences, but to get into who’s tall, who’s short, who’s got a decent haircut, who’s sweaty — I don’t like it.” Trump complained Sunday about the fresh attacks and
Which states vote today? So far, voters in four states have picked just a sliver of the delegates needed to clinch the party nominations for president. suggested, as he has before, that he might leave the party if they keep up. “I don’t think it’s fair the way that the establishment is treating Donald Trump,” he said. On Twitter, however, Trump kept up the invective — mocking

Rubio as a “little boy,” a “no-show senator” and a “lightweight.” At rallies in recent days, Trump also has repeatedly called Rubio “Little Marco” or “Little Rubio.” On the trail, Cruz has repeatedly called Trump and Rubio liars, and Sunday he suggested that Trump is refusing to disclose his tax returns because he has close business ties to the Mafia. But Rubio especially has made his attacks more personal. During Thursday’s debate, Rubio said that Trump needed extra makeup to cover up sweat and said Trump wanted a full-length mirror backstage “to make sure his pants weren’t wet.” Then in Huntsville, he told voters that Trump “should be worrying about the lines around his eyes from the horrible spray tan.” Rubio supporters are reluctantly accepting his shift in tone. Trina Weir, 57, of Front Royal, Va., said, “I hate to see the sophomoric activity like that, but after the smoke clears, let’s see who’s being more substantive.” ED O’KEEFE AND DAVID WEIGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
A Donald Trump rally Monday at Radford (Va.) University turned confrontational. He was describing how he would react to companies such as Carrier air conditioning moving production to Mexico when he was interrupted by the crowd jeering an apparent protester. “Are you from Mexico?” he repeatedly shouted at the woman as she left. Then three rows of young people, mostly African Americans, stood up, holding hands and shouting, “No more hate.” As they were escorted out, Trump shouted, “All lives matter,” and was cheered. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
I can’t support Trump, Republican senator says Sen. Ben Sasse, a Republican from Nebraska who has been in office less than 14 months, took to social media to declare that he would not support Trump if he gets the GOP presidential nomination and formally called for an independent challenge from the right as a conservative option. “I cannot support Donald Trump,” Sasse said on Facebook on Sunday night, and pledged to support “neither of them” if the nominees are Trump and Hillary Clinton. But also Sunday, Sen. Jeff Sessions, a Republican from Alabama whose hard-line conservative stances on immigration and trade have made him a favorite of the party’s base, endorsed Trump. (TWP)

nation+world SUPREME COURT Justice Clarence Thomas broke 10 years of silence and provoked audible gasps at the Supreme Court on Monday when he posed questions from the bench during an oral argument. In a case about a federal law that bans people convicted of domestic violence from owning guns, he wanted to know of any other case in which breaking a law suspends constitutional rights. And it wasn’t just one question; it was a back-andforth lasting a few minutes that stunned the courtroom.
It was only the second week the court has heard arguments since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, Thomas’ friend and fellow conservative. Thomas for seven years sat next to Scalia, who was famous for aggressive and sometimes combative questions from the bench. On Monday, with about 10 minutes left in a session, Justice Department lawyer Ilana Eisenstein was about to sit after asking the justices if there were other questions. Thomas then caught her by surprise with a question. The sound of Thomas’ gravelly

He has previously said he relies on the written briefs and doesn’t need to ask questions of the lawyers appearing in court. He last asked a question in court Feb. 22, 2006. He has come under criticism for his silence from some who say he is neglecting his duties as a justice. The other justices regularly poses questions. SAM HANANEL (AP)

IDOMENI, GREECE Pressed against coils of razor wire and shouting “Help us!,” refugees stranded at Greece’s northern border were pushed back Monday by Macedonian police using tear gas and stun grenades, as the European Union scrambled to ease the escalating number of stranded migrants in Greece. In a chaotic scene, Syrian and Iraqi refugees forced their way through part of a Macedonian border fence, some clutching infants or struggling to free duffel bags caught in the razorwire fence. They were met by Macedonian riot police, bolstered by dozens of special forces officers flown in by helicopter to quell a refugee protest. Amnesty International condemned European government for failing to adequately help stranded migrants. Some 7,000 migrants, including many from Syria and Iraq, are crammed into a tiny camp at the Greek border village of Idomeni, and hundreds more are arriving daily. The border pileup began ten days ago, when Austria and four ex-Yugoslav countries on the Balkan migrant route north into Western Europe decided to slow border access for migrants to a trickle — and stopped letting Afghan migrants travel through their territory. A U.N. official says those nations never did explain who made the decision on Afghan migrants, or why. BYLINE (SOURCE)

U.S. mulls Iraq battle plan With a fight for Mosul on the horizon, military is likely to increase help MILITARY The U.S. military is developing proposals for augmenting the American role in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq, senior Pentagon officials said on Monday, as plans take shape for a battle to reclaim the city of Mosul. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, said he expected the U.S. military to provide expanded assistance to Iraqi forces when
they launch a campaign for the northern city, which has been under Islamic State militants for a year and a half. It would be an expansion, he said, of the assistance U.S. forces provided Iraqi troops when the local troops pushed militants out of Ramadi, another Iraqi city, in December. “We’re talking about more of the things that we did in Ramadi, but we are talking about additional things of the kind that we’ve offered previously,” Carter said. “That includes, in addition to directly enabling Iraqi forces, some things like logistics and bridging. … So we fully expect
to be doing more and differing in both scale and the kinds of things that we’re doing.” Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that Iraqi leaders had already provided their plan for attacking Mosul to Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, the top U.S. commander for Iraq and Syria. Dunford said that MacFarland was working with U.S. Central Command, which has responsibility for the Middle East, to develop recommendations for steps the U.S. military could take to make that offensive more effective.

Judge blocks governor’s order on Syrian refugees
Russian police on Monday arrested a 38-year-old woman who was seen waving the severed head of a small child outside a Moscow subway station. She is suspected of killing the child when it was in her care and then setting the apartment on fire, officials said. Videos posted on Russian news websites show a woman dressed all in black, holding the severed head and shouting “I am a terrorist” in Russian, although most of what she says is incomprehensible. (AP)
A federal judge on Monday blocked Republican Gov. Mike Pence’s order barring state agencies from helping Syrian refugees resettle in Indiana, saying the order was discriminatory. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt was in response to a request for a preliminary injunction from the group Exodus Refugee Immigration, which helps resettle refugees. Pratt wrote that the directive “discriminates against Syrian refugees based on their national origin.” (AP)

Brooks Laich made his Capitals debut on March 12, 2003.
THREE POINTERS
A decade in the District Sunday was a sad day for D.C. sports, with Ian Desmond and Brooks Laich both joining new teams. Here are the longest-tenured D.C. pro athletes remaining. BYLINE (SOURCE)
JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)
WASHINGTONPOST.COM | DC SPORTS BOG
A hole left in D.C. sports Brooks Laich, Washington’s longest-tenured pro athlete, is traded to Toronto CAPITALS Role players aren’t supposed to last in one city for a decade. They aren’t supposed to have weekly sports-radio spots, and they aren’t supposed to get engaged to Hollywood celebrities. Role players also aren’t supposed to be paid like stars. When they are, they might be traded to free up necessary cap space around midnight on a Sunday. Brooks Laich’s role with the Capitals, by the end, couldn’t match his $4.5 million cap hit, and he was traded to Toronto. His role in Washington, though, went beyond manning the fourth line and the penalty kill. He was hockey’s happy evangelist, the guy who couldn’t stop talking about his sport’s place in this market and in his life. Some fans thought they read too many Laich quotes and had not seen enough Laich goals. Some thought it was all a bit of a performance. If it was, though, it lasted almost 13 years without its lead
role once breaking character. Remember, say, the time he described finding uncashed paychecks among his belongings? “I’ll never forget it, it was my first bonus check when I was 19 years old, and it was for $46,000,” Laich said. “And I got it, and I looked at it, and my first thought was this is too much money, I can’t accept this. And I just put it in my closet in my apartment.” Or the time Laich talked about Washington’s crushing firstround loss to Montreal? “People underestimate how much this stings,” he said. “And it’s because you tried so hard, and it’s because you want it so much.” Or especially the time he talked about his 2011 decision to re-sign with Washington? “You start thinking about your future,” Laich said then, while explaining his decision. “And it wasn’t long after that that I had a conversation with my agent and said: ‘Listen, I’ve thought about it, I’ve taken some time away, and
“Me and u together since my 1st year.. We make this team together! Im gonna miss u bro good luck to u! Gonna miss u!” ALEX OVECHKIN, tweeting about the departure of Brooks Laich.
I can only picture myself back in D.C. That’s the only place I want to be. So our sole focus should be on trying to get back in D.C.’ ” He wound up back in Washington, spending almost four years as D.C.’s longest-tenured pro. Laich predated Ryan Zimmerman and Kedric Golston here, and he predated his teammate Alex Ovechkin. They were the last two Caps to who remembered a time before Rock the Red and annual playoff appearances.
ESPN: Patriots and Tom Brady, 38, agree to a two-year contract extension through 2019 season
“He’s been a good soldier here for a long time,” as GM Brian MacLellan put it last week. Laich, 32, had spoken before about his occasional troubles separating life from hockey, how the game could consume every cranny of his existence. His relationship with Julianne Hough changed that, he said, but it didn’t change how he felt about his sport. “I’m so lucky,” he said. “I mean, the game has afforded me so much. The friends I’ve made, the places I’ve gotten to travel to, the experiences I’ve had, let alone making a living at it. … You know what, I come here, I’m happy. I play with my teammates, and I go home, and I’m happy. I could be the happiest guy uy on the team.” The Caps now w need to find a new happiest player, layer, and the sport needs a new w local evangelist. This team willl be able to fill Laich’s role on the e penalty kill, e fourth line. and his place on the His departure still leaves a hole.
3 Kedric Golston Debut: Sept. 11, 2006
The Redskins’ defensive lineman was a sixth-round pick and has seven sacks in 10 seasons. He’s 32 and expected to test free agency, so he could leave soon, too.
2 Alex Ovechkin Debut: Oct. 5, 2005
All he’s done is become the Capitals’ all-time leader in goals and points. Ovechkin, 30, isn’t going anywhere; he signed a 13-year, $124 million contract in 2008.
1 Ryan Zimmerman Debut: Sept. 1, 2005
Injuries have derailed his career. Zimmerman, 31, has played in only 156 games over the past two seasons. asons. He is signed through 2019, with a team option in 2020.

Free agents who would fit The Redskins will surely address some defensive needs at the NFL draft, which starts April 28, but first they must find modest-priced veterans to fill several gaps when free agency begins March 9. General manager
NFL
Scot McCloughan often looks for inexpensive players in their late 20s who have some upside. He’ll probably

wouldn’t hurt, either. Here are five pending free agents the Redskins should consider.
Ben Jones
Ian Williams
Andre Branch
James Starks
Zach Brown
Texans center
49ers nose tackle
Jaguars defensive end
Packers running back
Titans linebacker
This would be a classic McCloughan signing — a young, big lineman with plenty of potential. While center isn’t a top priority, the Redskins wouldn’t mind getting bigger and younger than incumbent Kory Lichtensteiger. Jones, 26, is 12 pounds heavier (308) and four years younger than Lichtensteiger. More importantly, he played both guard positions before returning to center last season, which would give the Redskins options. Jones wouldn’t have a hard time changing teams, given that he played with four quarterbacks last year with Houston. The former Georgia center is known for walking the field barefoot during pregame warmups.
If the Redskins don’t re-sign nose tackle Terrance Knighton, Williams would be a solid Plan B — even though he weighs at least 50 pounds less than “Pot Roast.” Williams, 26, played the run well for the 49ers last season and would be a quicker and more durable playmaker at 305 pounds. An improved inside pass rush would demand more attention from opposing offensive lines and give the Redskins’ outside rushers less traffic. Williams would also be more salary cap-friendly than Knighton, who cost $4 million last season, though San Francisco may overpay to try to keep the nose tackle.
The Redskins may wait for the draft to go after a defensive end since this year’s class is deep in that position. Still, injuries to the Redskins’ line last year showed how essential depth is. The former Clemson pass rusher wilted in the Jaguars’ 4-3 system. The chance to play in a 3-4 like he did in his senior year in college, when he recorded 10½ sacks, would be attractive. Branch was a better run stopper than pass rusher in Jacksonville because of the ill-fitted scheme. That’s fine because Washington needs a better run defense, too. Branch, 26, would provide balance with the Redskins.
If there’s an exception to McCloughan’s policy of not signing free agents 30 or older, it could be the Packers running back. Starks, 30, is a career backup with only 555 carries in six seasons. He comes off a career-best 601 rushing yards and, even more importantly, had 43 catches last year. The Redskins would love to have a reliable pass catcher out of the backfield. The starting job is still Matt Jones’ to lose, but Starks teamed well with Eddie Lacy in Green Bay. While Chicago running back Matt Forte is also an option, Starks might have more upside because he has less wear on his body than Forte.
The former 2012 secondround pick started for two years before suffering a season-ending pectoral muscle tear four snaps into the 2014 opener. He lost his starting job after five games last season and played little at the end of the year. So why take him? Brown, 26, still has potential and experience, and he has more coverage speed in the middle than the Redskins possessed last season. Washington will scramble to find middle linebackers and Brown could be an inexpensive stopgap solution for a couple seasons. Brown could also be a classic example of a player who benefits from a change of scenery.

With today’s deadline for the franchise tag designation fast approaching, Redskins officials and Kirk Cousins‘ agent were in discussions Monday toward landing the quarterback a longterm deal. However, it appears unlikely the two sides will reach an agreement by 4 p.m. today. In that case, the Redskins would likely use the franchise tag to retain Cousins for the 2016 season, committing to pay him a salary of $19.953 million, all of which would immediately count against the salary cap. Another option would be to use the transition tag. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONALS Few players have been entwined with the fabric of the Nationals like Ian Desmond. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 2004 and remained in the organization through 2015, his final season before free agency. So Sunday, when he reportedly agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Rangers, his former teammates reacted. “Whether that’s on the field or off the field, the Rangers are getting a great baseball player and also a great person,” outfielder Bryce Harper said.
Desmond, 30, put pressure on himself entering his free agent year when he turned down a big extension offer before the 2014 season. (His final two arbitration years plus the extension offer totaled $107 million over seven years.) He won three straight Silver Slugger awards from 2012 to 2014, but his production slipped in 2015; he hit .233 with 19 home runs. “I consider last year sort of an outlier,” first baseman Ryan Zimmerman said. “I would lean toward him doing more what he did those three, four years that he

Because the Nationals made a $15.8 million qualifying offer to Desmond in November, any team that signed him would have had to give up its first pick in the next draft as compensation to Washington. That drastically hurt his market value. “I think all the players are united on this: that we’re extremely disappointed in how qualifying offers are impacting some free agents,” pitcher Max Scherzer said. You snooze, you win
Fitness experts explain why sleep could be the missing ingredient in your workout HEALTH Your fitness routine is in full swing two months into the year: You’re eating right and you’re exercising, but you’re not yet seeing the results you want. What’s missing? It might be sleep. An increasing number of studies show that sleep deprivation can cause such negative outcomes as weight gain, an increase in overuse injuries, a decrease in muscle mass and a reduction in testosterone, which has a whole host of other negative effects, including low sex drive, depression and bone loss. “You can have two people who are doing the exact same workout and eating the same good nutrition, but one is seeing huge progress and the other isn’t. A lot of the time, good sleep is the difference,” says Mansur Mendizabal, a personal trainer and kettlebell instructor in the District. “Sleep is the only time the body is fully recovering and
rebuilding,” he says. In other words, it’s not enough to take a day or two off from training and slouch on the couch and expect good results. It’s sleep — specifically deep sleep — that is the difference when it comes to such things as muscle recovery, mental acuity and reaction time, another important aspect of sports performance. “It’s during the deep stages of sleep that all the tissues of the body repair,” says John Broussard, a sports medicine doctor in the District. “But you have to get into all the stages of sleep in the proper sequence to get those restorative benefits.” There are four parts of the sleep cycle: Stage 1 (near-awake), Stage 2 (onset of sleep), Stage 3 (deep and restorative sleep) and Stage 4 (deep REM or dream state), which occurs at about 90 minutes into each cycle. If you don’t go through all the phases of sleep, you’ll wake up feeling groggy instead of restored. In other words, lack of sleep
How to improve sleep For those who want to catch more zzz’s, John Broussard, a sports medicine doctor in the District, recommends the following: Make sure you have a bright work environment during the day. Spend at least one hour outside every day. Create stress-free evenings. Before bedtime, take magnesium or melatonin, both of which have been shown to lessen muscle tension and anxiety. Warm milk also helps. Make sure your bedroom is cool and dark, with no TV or other electronics. Don’t keep your phone by the bed unless you use it as an alarm clock.
affects your cognitive and motor performance, Broussard says. “We are performing every day no matter what the setting is.” But let’s say the setting is the gym. What exactly does that sleep do for our muscle tissue?
Study in mice suggests Paleo diet may cause weight gain and boost blood sugar
“Many people think you build [muscle] in the gym, but you actually build when you sleep,” says Chirjeev Sawhney, a personal trainer and fitness manager at a Gold’s Gym in Arlington. This is because, during deep sleep, the body uses the protein you consumed during the day before and the growth hormone produced (also in deep sleep) to repair the muscle tissue you tore up during your workout, Sawhney says. Mendizabal agrees that people need to treat sleep as a daily priority. “If you don’t sleep, your body is stressed, you crave food, your immune system is compromised,” Mendizabal says. But he recognizes that it isn’t possible for everyone to get the seven to eight hours recommended by the National Institutes of Health. “Six hours is more realistic. But on a report card, that would be the equivalent of a D,” he says. GABRIELL A BOSTON (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

STUDIES SHOW...
Exercise can lower cancer risk A new study published in Cell Metabolism offers clues to how exercise can lower the risk of cancer. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark implanted cancer cells into mice before giving half of them running wheels and the rest nothing. After four weeks, researchers found that a third of the runners developed cancer, in comparison to three-quarters of the sedentary mice, and when the disease was contracted, those who exercised had smaller tumors, The New York Times reports. An analysis of the tumors found that the exercising mice had five times the number of natural killer cells and twice the number of T-cells, both cancer-killing immune cells. But researchers found that natural killer cells, which increase as adrenaline is produced from exercise, were the cells that limited cancer growth. (EXPRESS)

It’s the guy thing I just can’t get past Q. My boyfriend of two years (we’re both 27) and I have had a solid relationship. He recently revealed to me that he hooked up with guys in his late teens. He said he was unsure of himself at the time, and that it was sexual experimentation that never developed into feelings or a relationship. I feel like I should be OK with this but it has made me very upset. He says he doesn’t consider himself bi. I can’t seem to move past this. UPSET GIRLFRIEND It’s a shock to realize there’s something significant about your partner’s life experiences you didn’t know, especially something involving sexual experiences. This is still new, and will likely improve over time — but only if you can keep communication open, and be honest with yourself about how this may change the ways
you think and feel about him, big and small, temporary and permanent. If his past experiences translate into what feels like a threat for you, then that discomfort won’t automatically go away without some real work to understand it. And forcing yourself to overcome it prematurely just won’t make it happen.
It can hurt to feel like the third wheel with two people who, in theory, should be closer to you than to each other. But your relationship with each of them is and will always be unique. Their closeness in age may give them a common language of pop culture, interests and emoji that is separate from you, but it need not detract from your meaning to them: Family member closeness is not a zero-sum game. Cultivate your relationships with them individually, and don’t try to compete as a friend or sister when you are (presumably) her only stepmother. If your sister is making you overly uncomfortable, you can let her know. Loretta Lynn worked with producer John Carter Cash, the son of June Carter and Johnny Cash, on her new album.

DJ Khaled’s Snapchat game just got a lot stronger
With her latest album, Loretta Lynn goes home ‘Full Circle’ is the 83-year-old country icon’s first in 10 years ALBUMS When Loretta Lynn was growing up in Butcher Hollow in Kentucky in the 1930s, her home in the coal mining community was always filled with music, either from her own voice echoing through the trees or the sound of the Carter Family’s songs. The country icon’s Appalachian musical roots are explored on a new “American Masters” documentary on PBS as well as in her first new studio album in more than a decade, “Full Circle,” both debuting Friday. Lynn, who was the second of eight children in her family, said
her daddy played the banjo and her mama played the guitar and nearly everyone in the “holler” could sing or play as well. “I was singing when I was born, I think,” the 83-year-old singer said. “Daddy used to come out on the porch where I would be singing and rocking the babies to sleep. He’d say, ‘Loretta, shut that big mouth. People all over this holler can hear you.’ And I said, ‘Daddy, what difference does it make? They are all my cousins.’” The documentary, “Loretta Lynn: Still a Mountain Girl,” chronicles Lynn’s remarkable rise from a “Coal Miner’s Daughter” to a country superstar who wrote frank songs about her upbringing and her experiences as a wife and mother. Although her rags-to-riches
440K
story is already well known thanks to a best-selling autobiography and Oscar-winning film starring Sissy Spacek, Lynn has never before recorded many of the Appalachian songs that inspired her career. Her last album, “Van Lear Rose,” produced by rocker Jack White, earned her two Grammys in 2005. It was fitting then that producer John Carter Cash, the son of June Carter and Johnny Cash, helped her revisit some of these songs, including a couple of Carter Family standards, “Black Jack David” and “I Never Will Marry.” “There was just an immediate magic in the studio together,” Cash said. “To me, it was a lot like working with my mom again. Loretta’s sense of humor, her creative drive and just the very nature of her being felt like home.” KRISTIN M. HALL (AP)
DJ Khaled just signed onto a management-only deal with Jay Z’s label Roc Nation, The Verge reported Monday. That puts him among greats like Kanye West and Rihanna, which is surprising considering Khaled hasn’t achieved as mainstream musical success as his labelmates. His most recent album, “I Changed a Lot,” peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200. But the Miami producer has made a name for himself recently thanks to his presence on Snapchat, where he boasts over 6 million followers. As part of the deal, Jay Z will be Khaled’s personal manager. Viewership of Oscars dips to eight-year low The 34.3 million viewers who tuned in to the Academy Awards represented its smallest audience since 2008, according to numbers from the Nielsen company released Monday. The ceremony, hosted by Chris Rock, came amid controversy about a lack of diversity among the nominees and calls for a boycott by some minority fans. There was no immediate way to judge whether the controversy affected ratings. (AP) FILM
The number of tweets per minute about Leonardo DiCaprio’s best actor Oscar during Sunday night’s awards, according to Us Weekly — setting a new Twitter record. The previous record was held by Ellen DeGeneres for her star-studded selfie during the 2014 Oscars; that generated 255,000 tweets a minute. DiCaprio used his acceptance speech for his starring role in “The Revenant” to call for action to combat global warming. The actor had famously been nominated six times before his first win. A judge on Monday delayed ruling on Bill Cosby’s motion to dismiss a defamation case filed by model Janice Dickinson over her allegations that the comedian drugged and raped her in 1982. Dickinson sued Cosby in May over his denial of her claims. She says his former attorney wrote letters to news outlets denying her allegations and implying the organizations could be sued if they used the claims in stories. On Monday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Debre Katz Weintraub delayed a ruling until March 29 and ordered attorneys to file new briefs on whether the denial by Cosby’s former lawyer constituted a legal communication about possible litigation. Beavan won best costume design for “Mad Max: Fury Road.” As she walked down the aisle for her acceptance speech, cameras caught the people she passed with looks of scorn and crossed arms. Beavan was wearing a leather jacket and pants, and many saw the reactions as disapproval of her outfit.
“Jeeziz, it’s already sold out of NYC’s 2 biggest theaters for every show all weekend and most of Monday. Is that possible?” MUTHASUCKA, a commenter at comicbook.com, is shocked by
how quickly tickets to “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” are selling out. Tickets went on sale Monday, a month before the movie is set to hit theaters, and were already selling out. You can preorder on Fandango or in person at your theater — but hurry!
