He had them convinced until he threw in the shooting range
So wait ... cockroaches are a no, but lawyers are totally fine?
How he squeaked through security is anyone’s guess. A little mouse caused a big delay Wednesday on a British Airways flight from London to San Francisco. After the rodent was spotted, the crew joked that the mouse couldn’t enter U.S. airspace without a passport, and told everyone they needed a new plane. That meant a four-hour delay. No one was laughing about that. (AP)
Allan V. Evans of Wheat Ridge, Colo., took out an ad in an English newspaper Wednesday claiming to be the rightful King of Wales and vowing to reclaim his throne. He also said he’ll soon return to claim his property, including 17 estates. His credibility isn’t the best: In 2012, he filed a claim in Twiggs County, Ga., asserting that his family ancestry entitled him to ownership of 35 homes, a church and a shooting range. A court denied that claim. (EXPRESS)
Security guards at an Austrian court might need to put up a sign at the screening gate to let the public know about another item prohibited on the premises — cockroaches. State broadcaster ORF said Wednesday that security personnel in the western city of Linz turned away a man a day earlier after he tried to enter the court building with a sack full of the six-legged pests. ORF did not say why the man had the roaches. (AP)

Orphaned cubs find home across country
METRO WATCH

COURTESY OF THE MARYLAND ZOO
BALTIMORE The two sister grizzly bears foraged on Native American tribal grounds not far from the edges of Glacier National Park in Montana with no mama bear in sight. They had been orphaned after their mother was shot. The cubs weren’t going to survive on their own, especially with one having suffered gunshot wounds. After treatment and a three-day trip across the country in wintry weather, they are making their public debut at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. It’s the first time in its 140year history that the Baltimore zoo has had grizzly bears. Mike McClure, the zoo’s general curator, said they are curious about their outdoor yard and spend “a lot of time digging up the mulch, rolling in the grass and exploring the pool.” They are “bear cubs just being bear cubs,” he said. So far, they are spending

their mornings outdoors. The two cubs, about 11 months old, arrived at the zoo in late December, but zoo officials said they kept the news quiet so the animals could get used to their environment. The bears spent about 30 days in quarantine and several weeks getting used to zoo life. The zoo’s planned announcement of the grizzlies then got bumped by news of a giraffe having a 6-foot-tall calf. The cubs have not been named and the zoo expects to hold a public naming contest soon.
For now, zookeepers have dubbed them Big Bear and Little Bear. Little Bear is slightly smaller than her sister, who outweighs her by about 20 pounds. Little Bear also has a distinctive band of blondish fur around her neck, zookeepers said. “Although no one likes the tragic circumstances that led to the cubs coming here to the zoo, we are pleased that we can offer a permanent home to these sisters,” zoo president Don Hutchinson said in a statement. It’s probably faster than the Metro Arriving at work on horseback Thursday, newly minted Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke pledged he would devote more resources to national parks and bolster the sovereignty of American Indian tribes. Zinke — who was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday by a 68 to 31 vote — rode with a mounted police escort to the Interior Department’s downtown headquarters on Tonto, an Irish sport horse. The horse, a bay roan gelding, is normally kept in stables on the Mall and is owned by the U.S. Park Police. (TWP)

On Wheeler Road, gunfire now familiar
MARYLAND
Death of man naked in woods ruled homicide
VIRGINIA
Six people shot in just seven days on a short stretch in Southeast
Those numbers are on the rise, with 121 this year, compared to 91 at this time in 2016. Police say they are working to cut crime even more, still wary of 2015, when homicides surged 54 percent, spiking to 162. That number dropped to 135 in 2016. So far this year, there have been 15 killings, down from 17 at this time in 2016. A woman who has lived in Congress Heights for many years carefully opened her door, but her frightened silence echoed as others approached in the neighborhood. “Things are crazy and we’ve done enough talking with each other,” said the woman, too scared to give her name. “It’s got to stop before it really blows up.”
Hot pink, a color associated with Barbie Dreamhouses, is poised to invade the traditionally macho world of hunting. Already required to wear Day-Glo orange to decrease the odds they’ll be mistaken for Bambi, Virginia hunters would have the option of sporting fluorescent pink under a bill that cleared the General Assembly last week. Gov. Terry McAuliffe is expected to sign it into law. The measure reflects the growing participation of women and girls in what has traditionally been a male-dominated pastime. The number of female hunters nearly doubled from 2001 to 2015, from 1.8 million to 3.4 million, while the number of male hunters shrank from nearly 16 million to 14.6 million over that period.

THE DISTRICT The rattle of gunfire has become a familiar sound on Wheeler Road. At night. In the evening. Before lunch. Six people shot in seven days along a short stretch of one street in Southeast Washington. In front of a school. Next to a church. Beside homes. It started over a two-hour period Feb. 23, when police sped to three separate shootings that injured four people. The latest burst of violence came Wednesday, when a man was shot inside a car, just a short walk from his house. “The shooter must’ve emptied his clip,” said Carlos Quinones, a 59-year-old contractor who lives in Maryland and is renovating a three-bedroom home on Upsal Street, close to Wednesday’s shooting on Wheeler Road. “The shots came so fast I dove into the house and shut the door, and didn’t come out until the police came. I mean, things are crazy.” No one has died, though Wednesday’s victim remains critical — his condition so grave that homicide detectives were assigned to investigate. A police officer was so close to the scene in the residential Congress Heights neighborhood that he arrived in time to see the suspected gunman

fleeing, leaving a weapon behind. Police have arrested two brothers in one of the Feb. 23 shootings but have not discerned a motive, beyond attributing the gunfire to a neighborhood dispute that is spreading bullet casings and the wounded from the 3300 to the 3900 blocks of Wheeler Road. “There certainly is some kind of dispute going on,” Police Chief Peter Newsham told reporters on Wednesday. But he lamented that “many victims have not cooperated” with detectives, “making it a little more difficult to get to the bottom of it all.” Violent crime in the District this year has dropped 20 percent compared to the same time last year, with declines in every category but assaults with guns.

Maryland State Police say the death of a man whose body was found in the western Maryland woods has been ruled a homicide. Police said Thursday that an autopsy concluded that 24-year-old Alexander Stevens of Frostburg died from “sharp force injuries to the neck.” His naked body was found Jan. 4 on a logging road near Barton. Police say no arrests have been made, and the investigation is continuing. 911 records show that the man’s girlfriend told authorities they both fell from the High Rock overlook in the Savage River State Forest. Police ID officer involved in fatal January shooting Police have released the name of the officer in a fatal shooting in Fairfax County. A statement from Police Chief Col. Police said that Mohammad Doudzai barricaded himself in his Herndon house after shooting and wounding his two brothers. Authorities say he went to the door with a knife and was shot by Guckenberger. Criminal and administrative investigations into the shooting are continuing. (AP) THE DISTRICT

Nonprofit partners with app Lyft to fight drunken driving in D.C. THE DISTRICT SoberRide, a program to combat drunken driving, has come up with a different way of arranging safe trips home after holiday celebrations: Hang up the phone and call up the app instead. For St. Patrick’s Day and other 2017 holidays that tend to be heavy on alcohol consumption, the program has entered a partnership with Lyft, the app-based
ride-hailing service. During past holidays, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, sponsor of SoberRide, has asked drivers who may have had too much to drink to call an 800 number to request a cab. The ride home was free up to the equivalent of a $30 fare, which was subsidized by the program. It was quite successful, providing more than 66,000 safe rides since 1993. In the new version, the ride requests will be made via the Lyft app, with users entering the code SOBERRIDE to get a

Fresh wave of airstrikes hits al-Qaeda in Yemen SANAA, YEMEN U.S. forces carried out more than 20 airstrikes against al-Qaeda in Yemen on Thursday, killing at least seven militants in the largest operation since a ground raid a month ago that left a Navy SEAL and more than two dozen Yemenis dead. The strikes targeted al-Qaeda positions, weapons systems and equipment in a remote and mountainous area in central Yemen. Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said the strikes were aimed at degrading the group’s ability to “coordinate external
terror attacks” and to limit its use of Yemen as a “safe space for terror plotting.” Yemeni security officials said that U.S. jets and drones targeted at least six districts where the provinces of Bayda, Shabwa and Abyan meet. An official said the strikes killed seven al-Qaeda militants in Shabwa and Abyan. The pre-dawn attack shook houses and awoke residents, many of whom fled in fear as explosions lit up the horizon, according to local tribal leaders. Al-Qaeda issued a statement claiming that local fighters foiled

They said U.S. airstrikes targeted alQaeda artillery and other sites, and that no U.S. Navy ships participated in the mission. How much is an old, dried-out piece of mold worth? Apparently, more than $14,600 if it was created by the doctor who discovered penicillin. The nearly 90-year-old swatch of mold has a rather extraordinary history: It came from the laboratory of Alexander Fleming, whose discovery brought the world its first antibiotic, credited with saving millions of lives. The patchy bit of mold from his niece’s collection was auctioned in London on Wednesday for $14,617. The mold is preserved in a round glass case and features an inscription by Fleming on the back, describing it as “the mould that first made penicillin.” That, however, may be a stretch. The Scottish-born doctor likely made dozens of such mold mementos, from his original fungus sample. (AP)

Shares of Snap pop in debut on stock market Snapchat co-founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, above, rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, marking the stock market debut of the company they founded in 2011 out of their Stanford University dorm rooms. Snap, the parent company of the messaging service Snapchat, saw a healthy pop in its first moments of trading, opening at $24, well above the $17 offer price. Snap closed at $24.48 a share. The steady trading at the higher price indicates that the company is seeing great demand for its initial public offering. Some are hoping that Snap’s debut can revive a lagging IPO market and encourage other tech firms to make their debuts. Snapchat has a loyal user base of 158 million people who use it to send 2.5 billion messages every day, with younger users spending more than 30 minutes a day on the service, according to its IPO filing. While it has yet to profit off that popularity, it is growing its revenue, which was $404.5 million in 2016. The firm has invested in working with media partners to deliver news and analysis to its young audience. But Snap has its challenges. Facebook has introduced some Snapchat-like features to Instagram, which the company acknowledged have hurt its user growth and could be a risk factor in the future. HAYLEY TSUKAYAMA
French candidate loses immunity from a trial for posting ISIS images BRUSSELS The European Parliament voted Thursday to lift the immunity from prosecution for French far-right leader Marine Le Pen for tweeting gruesome images of Islamic State violence, a crime that carries up to three years in prison in France. The legislature voted by a broad majority to clear the way for the possible prosecution of Le Pen over tweets she made in December 2015 showing executions, including the killing of American reporter James Foley by Islamic State extremists. French prosecutors in the city of Nanterre had asked lawmakers to lift the immunity that Le Pen enjoys as a member of the

Le Pen could face charges for tweets
Marine Le Pen says she was trying to condemn the Islamic State’s violence.
European Parliament. Le Pen, a candidate in this year’s French presidential election, posted her tweets in response to a journalist who drew an analogy between her antiimmigration National Front party and ISIS extremists. She was trying to show the
difference between the groups but the effort backfired, drawing widespread condemnation. Le Pen took down the tweet showing the killing of Foley after his family protested, but left up another image of violence by ISIS. Under French law, publishing
violent images can be punished by up to three years in jail and a fine of 75,000 euros ($78,800). Before the vote, Le Pen on Thursday defended her tweets, saying she just wanted to condemn the barbaric practices of ISIS, also known as Daesh. “I’m a lawmaker. I’m in my role when I condemn Daesh,” she said. “And if I don’t fulfill my role, I’m worth nothing as a lawmaker. Nobody can prevent a republic’s representative from condemning Daesh’s acts of violence.” Her campaign manager, David Rachline, denounced the lawmakers’ actions. The EU parliament decision “marks the difference between those who denounce and fight Islamist fundamentalism and those who want to hide the atrocities,” Rachline said. SAMUEL PETREQUIN (AP)

Government forces take positions Thursday against ISIS in Palmyra, Syria.
Syria forces retake town of Palmyra SYRIA Syria’s military announced Thursday that it has fully recaptured the historic town of Palmyra from the Islamic State group, as the militants’ defenses crumbled and ISIS fighters fled in the face of artillery fire and intense Russia-backed airstrikes. The development marks the third time that the town — famed for its Roman ruins and archaeological treasures, which ISIS had sought to destroy — has changed hands in one year. It was also the second blow for ISIS in Syria in a week, after Turkish-backed opposition fighters seized the town of alBab from the militants Feb. 23, following a grueling three-month battle. For the Syrian government, the news was a welcome development
against the backdrop of peace talks underway with the opposition in Switzerland. The Syrian military’s statement said troops gained full control of the desert town in central Syria following a series of military operations carried out with the help of Russian air cover and in cooperation with “allied and friendly troops” — shorthand for members of the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group who are fighting alongside Syrian forces. ISIS defenses around Palmyra had begun to erode Sunday, with government troops reaching the town’s outskirts Tuesday. Before the civil war gripped Syria in 2011, Palmyra was an important tourist attraction, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year. ZEINA KARAM AND DOMINIQUE SOGUEL (AP)

AG bows out of inquiry After revelations of contacts with Russia, Sessions steps aside from related probe WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX
The mystery of the secret Obamacare bill
MELINA MARA (THE WASINGTON POST)
POLITICS Under growing pressure from Democrats and Republicans alike, Attorney General Jeff Sessions agreed Thursday to recuse himself from an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. His action followed revelations from The Washington Post on Wednesday night that he twice met with the Russian ambassador and didn’t say so when pressed by Congress. Sessions rejected any suggestion that he tried to mislead anyone about his contacts with Moscow’s U.S. envoy, Sergey Kislyak, saying, “That is not my intent. That is not correct.” He did allow, though, that he should have been more careful in his testimony, saying, “I should have slowed down and said, ‘But I did meet one Russian official a couple of times.’ ” The attorney general said he made his decision to recuse himself after his staff recommended that he step aside from any investigation related to the Trump campaign, since he had been involved in that campaign. He said Acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente would handle such matters. Sessions added that his announcement “should not be interpreted as confirmation of the existence of any investigation.” Air Force One landed in Washington minutes before Sessions’ news conference began, but President Trump stayed on the plane during the televised event. He emerged only after Sessions finished answering questions. The White House stood behind Sessions, though officials say they first learned about his contacts with the ambassador from a reporter Wednesday night. Trump said he had “total” confidence in Sessions and didn’t
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a press conference Thursday that he did not intend to mislead Congress.
think he needed to step aside from the investigation. The Justice Department has maintained there was nothing improper about Sessions’ contacts or his answers to Congress. Sessions has faced increasing demands that he resolve the seeming contradiction between his two conversations in the summer and fall with Kislyak, and his sworn statements to Congress in January, when he said he had not had communications with Russians during the campaign. While there is nothing necessarily nefarious or even unusual about a member of Congress meeting with a foreign ambassador, typically members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee meet with foreign ambassadors, not Armed Services Committee lawmakers. In addition, congressional contact with Russian officials was limited after the invasion of Crimea, and because of Moscow’s close relationship with Syria.
Senate confirms Ben Carson, Rick Perry for housing, energy posts
Could Sessions face perjury charges? A perjury case would likely come down to splitting hairs over what Sessions said under oath, what he believed he was saying and what he believed he was being asked. To prove that there has been perjury, prosecutors must show not only that a person spoke falsely but that he or she intended to be misleading about an indisputable fact. Sessions could reasonably argue he thought he was being asked about his campaign-related contacts as opposed to congressional or diplomatic contacts, said Benjamin Wittes, a senior Brookings Institution fellow. (AP)
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says Sessions’ recusal isn’t enough and repeated her call for his resignation, accusing him of “lying under oath.” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said a special
prosecutor should be appointed to examine whether the federal investigation into the Kremlin’s meddling in the U.S. election — and into possible contacts between Trump associates and Russians — had been compromised by Sessions. Democrats also sought a criminal perjury investigation. Sessions’ recusal came after more than a half-dozen Republican lawmakers, including some who consider themselves personally close to him, urged him to recuse himself. They include Sen. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, who said that though he found it impossible to believe that Sessions could have colluded with Russia, “If there is an investigation, he probably shouldn’t be the person leading it.” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, RIowa, said Thursday that he asked Sessions to send a letter to a Senate panel to explain his testimony. ERIC TUCKER (AP)
Somewhere, in an undisclosed room in the U.S. Capitol, there is legislation that will repeal and replace Obamacare. On Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., went on a crusade to find it. Paul, above, got word that members of a House Energy and Commerce committee were gathering to talk about the legislation, and marched over from the Senate to the House side to demand his colleagues show him the “secret” draft. Paul sent a series of tweets on his march, ensuring that cameras and reporters greeted him when he showed up. He even brought his own copy machine. And when a staffer came out to tell Paul that the bill was not there and he couldn’t see it, Paul turned to the press. It’s true that a proposal to reform/replace Obamacare is in a secret room. Bloomberg reported that the draft is in a viewing room available only to the 50-plus lawmakers who sit on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Reps. Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J.,and Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., led another group of reporters to the Energy and Commerce Committee’s main hearing room and through a Capitol basement. House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer arrived at the conference room, trailed by a Facebook Live-streaming staffer and some reporters. They managed to enter the room — which was empty. AMBER PHILLIPS

THREE POINTERS
Scot McCloughan drew scrutiny after mixed results in last year’s draft and in free agency.
Conspicuous absence
Redskins GM Scot McCloughan misses the combine; team cites ‘family matters’ NFL Scot McCloughan, the general manager for the Redskins whose specialty has long been college scouting and the draft, is not with the team at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Two people familiar with the situation said Redskins staffers were told Tuesday during their trip that the team’s top talent evaluator was “tending to a personal matter.” A Redskins spokesman late Wednesday confirmed that McCloughan didn’t make the trip because “he is taking care of some family matters.” McCloughan said via text message that he was dealing with a death in the family. His 100-year-old grandmother Marie
McCloughan died Feb. 6. Stopped for comment Thursday as he headed to a meeting at the combine, team president Bruce Allen said only, “He is dealing with family matters.” Allen said McCloughan will return to work “just as soon as things are handled.” The combine ends Monday. The disappearing act has been a cloud over the franchise just a week before the start of the NFL’s free agent signing period. It also comes during a time when the team has scheduled meetings in Indianapolis with representatives of its pending free agents. McCloughan’s top area of expertise is the draft, and he places a high priority on conducting pre-draft interviews at
Timeline of intrigue The absence of Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan from the NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis has only increased speculation about his job status. Late Wednesday, 106.7 the Fan reported that he had been sent home from Redskins Park on Feb. 20. McCloughan’s agent, Peter Schaffer, said that the report was “not true.” Multiple agents who represent Redskins players have said they were told McCloughan wasn’t in the office last week. Team president Bruce Allen has restricted McCloughan from speaking to the media this offseason, denying interview requests for him at the Senior Bowl in January and leading up to the combine. M.J.
the combine to evaluate players. He has been under scrutiny because of mixed results in last year’s draft and the past two free agent classes. He also recently found himself at the middle of a firestorm as Chris Cooley, a former Redskins player who is now a radio host on team-owned ESPN 980, speculated that Allen was blocking McCloughan from addressing the media because of a possible relapse of the drinking problems that contributed to his dismissals as a front-office executive in San Francisco and Seattle. The team never publicly addressed Cooley’s comments. Allen declined to comment when asked Wednesday morning.

3 Minnesota Wild The Central Division leaders added centers Martin Hanzal and Ryan White in a deal for draft picks — a small price to pay for a team eyeing its first berth in a Stanley Cup Final.
2 Pittsburgh Penguins The defending champs fleshed out their defense with veterans Mark Streit and Ron Hainsey. Holding on to Marc-Andre Fleury keeps the Pens’ goaltending depth.
1 Washington Capitals GM Brian MacLellan added blue-liner Kevin Shattenkirk and gave up nothing more than a low first-round pick this summer. Team chemistry remains intact.

Red Sox ace Price to get second elbow check
After starter David Price experienced intense elbow soreness in a simulated game Tuesday, the Red Sox ordered an MRI exam, then shut him down. According to manager John Farrell, the team is “very concerned” with the results and has sent Price to noted orthopedist James Andrews for an evaluation. Price, 31, is due $30 million this season, the second year of a seven-year, $217 million deal. (TWP) NBA announces it will hire more officials, and use new tracking data to evaluate them

D.C. UNITED VS. SPORTING K.C. | 7 P.M. SATURDAY, RFK STADIUM
MLS With a core of veterans and a few stars in their prime, D.C. United enters the MLS regular season expecting to contend for a playoff spot. That’s the team’s floor, but its ceiling could be much higher. That all depends on a group of promising young players. The first test of the team’s potential is its season opener against Sporting K.C. on Saturday night (7, NewsChannel 8) at RFK Stadium. If United is able to push beyond last season’s fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference, the progression will sprout from a youth movement. The challenge for coach Ben Olsen is to maintain opportunities for inexperienced players when growing pains threaten results. “Development is about throwing them into the game and letting the game teach them,” Olsen said. “On top of throwing them into the game, it’s about giving them the trust to throw them back into the game after things didn’t go well.”
TONI L. SANDYS (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Four players under 26 hope to elevate offense for playoff contender
Midfielder Luciano Acosta, 22, right, led United with 11 assists last season and is one of four young players who could boost the club’s playoff hopes.
Ian Harkes, the 21-year-old rookie from Wake Forest, is Olsen’s most recognizable project. The homegrown midfielder from Fairfax will start the season as a substitute. Luciano Acosta, 22, returns as the conductor in the midfield after leading United with 11 assists last season, his first with the team. The 5-foot-3 Argentinian will start underneath striker Patrick Mullins, 25, who is hoping to establish himself as a consistent front man after 39 starts in his first four MLS seasons. Forward Jose Guillermo Ortiz, 24, joined the club in January from Liga Deportiva Alajuelense in his native Costa Rica.
All four young guns will enter the fray to varying degrees as Olsen searches for harmony. “If you get too many young guys out there it can be problematic, so you just got to find the balance,” Olsen said. “I’m very excited about this young group we have here.” Goalie Bill Hamid, 26, is a steady leader in his seventh year and is ready to start the opener after knee surgery in January. “My role is going to remain the same with any changes in front of me,” Hamid said. “I’ve been a goalkeeper that tries to use this voice and presence to command and marshal the back line.” DILLON MULLAN (FOR EXPRESS)

“I loved it. Once it came out, it was just something really fun to go with.” KEVIN SHATTENKIRK of the Capitals tells The Washington Post about his Twitter

Neither of the Nationals’ aces, Stephen Strasburg and Max Scherzer, has thrown a pitch in a Grapefruit League game yet this spring. That will change Friday, when Strasburg, who has declared his elbow pain-free, pitches at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches against the Cardinals. It will be Strasburg’s first game action since walking off the mound at Nationals Park with a tear in his pronator tendon Sept. 7, although he threw an inning in an intrasquad game last week. Scherzer, who is dealing with a stress fracture in the bottom knuckle of his right ring finger, said Thursday morning he was scheduled to throw as many as 70 pitches in a bullpen session later in the day. Broncos checked claims of coach’s sex assaults General manager John Elway told USA Today this week at the NFL combine that the Broncos investigated decade-old claims of sex assault and harassment against Vance Joseph before hiring him as head coach. While he was an assistant coach at Colorado, Joseph was disciplined by the school for harassment after he had inappropriate sexual relationships with two female trainers in 2003. He was accused of sexual assault by two women in 2004 in Colorado, but he was never interviewed by police or charged. (EXPRESS)

Giants coach McAdoo criticizes Eli at combine The Giants have made it clear that they’re looking look for their next-generation quarterback. Two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning just turned 36, and coach Ben McAdoo said this week at the NFL combine that while the team needs to surround Manning with better talent, he needs to raise his game, too, after a season in which he was intercepted 16 times and lost four of his seven fumbles. “We can’t turn the ball over that way. … So we need to catch it better than we caught it, and we need to handle it in the pocket better,” McAdoo said. An old way to cover up Wallpaper is back in style — but it’s not the stuff you’re used to
DECOR Wallpaper is ready for its next act. The polarizing paint alternative has returned to fashion thanks to ultra-stylish prints, dimensional fabrics and new materials that make it easy to install and, yes, to remove. Offering more drama than paint, it’s a fun way to transform a room and reflect your personal style without breaking the bank. Some designers even liken it to contemporary art for the mass market. “It’s a risk,” says Kati Curtis, a designer with offices in New York and Los Angeles. “But, boy, can it pay off.” What’s caused the big comeback? It’s easy to attribute the sales spike to style bloggers, HGTV and Instagram, but at the core of wallpaper’s new popularity is a hint of rebellion. Curtis says the renewed interest is in part a backlash against the “sterile grays-whitesneutrals” of the ’90s and early
aughts, and the more recent obsession with the layered rugs and clustered collectibles of the California bohemian aesthetic. “People want their homes to feel special and unique,” she says. “Wallpaper is the perfect toy to do that with polish.” Indeed, today’s popular papers are vastly different from the old school. The prints are dramatically oversize and fantastically whimsical, with characters that feel pulled from a storybook and patterns right from the runway. The colors are richer. The fabrics are textured and sometimes three-dimensional. And the images have a lifelike sharpness thanks to advances in digital printing. Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at SherwinWilliams (the country’s largest wallpaper distributor), says the company plans to release four new books of wallcoverings this year, putting its total catalogue at more than 100,000 options. And then there are customprinted papers. Erin Burke, who runs the contemporary home furnishings website Burke Decor, frequently receives requests to scale and print wallpapers made
Choose, use, remove
Follow these guidelines for picking the perfect wallpaper. M.B. Types: Wallpaper is categorized by its material and adhesive coating. Nonwoven substrate paper dry-strips easily from the wall. Prepasted papers come with a wateractivated adhesive backing. Print matching: The “match” tells you how to line up the pattern from strip to strip. Straight-match papers run the width of the paper and across the seam onto the next strip. Random-match papers continue seamlessly no matter what. Dropmatch papers must be aligned horizontally and vertically. Calculating coverage: An online calculator (Lowe’s and Home Depot have them) can help determine how much wallpaper you need. Upkeep: Scrubbable papers can be cleaned with a sponge and detergent. Washable papers can be gently cleaned or wiped with a damp cloth. Removal: Commitment-phobes should look for two types of paper: strippable and peelable. Both can be removed without water or chemicals.
from personal photos that can be tiled or enlarged to mural size. “It sounds strange, but remember, wallpaper is a conversation piece,” she says, adding that hotels and restaurants already do this in bar areas and bathrooms. Installing and removing wallpaper used to be a notorious headache, so technology — including new adhesive formulas and stick-and-peel fabrics that strip off walls without leaving residue — has done wonders for its reputation. “The days of scraping and steaming are over,” says Paulina Berberian, a creative director at Brewster Home Fashions, a wallcovering company. “Less mess, less stress.” Berberian suggests millennial consumers will only continue to drive the trend and technology to make it more convenient, as they’re new to the housing market and to wallpaper itself. “Young people who grew up in the clean, minimalism era have never had wallpaper,” she says. “So, naturally, I think they’re drawn to it because it feels new and exciting.” MEGAN BUERGER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Land of Mine’
Old Man Logan (Hugh Jackman) shoos some no-good kids off his lawn.
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Before sunset: In ‘Logan,’ the years take their toll The most disturbing part of “Logan” is not the extreme violence (of which there is a lot; this is not a movie for kids) or the near-continual barrage of F-bombs (again, NOT. FOR. KIDS). It’s that Logan (Hugh Jackman) needs drugstore reading glasses and Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is losing his formidable mind. “Logan” takes place years after the ending of “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” the timeshifting, retconning 2014 film. It’s the waning days of mutantkind; with the exception of Logan (no longer bearing the name of Wolverine), Professor X (now known simply as Charles) and Caliban, a
white-shrouded mutant allergic to the sun (Stephen Merchant), all of the other X-men have been x-ed out, whether from old age or — it’s implied — government action. And for some reason, no new mutants are being born. So they thought. When the young Laura (Dafne Keen), a preteen with powers and anger issues startlingly similar to Wolverine’s, shows up, Logan and the professor abandon their “Of Mice and Men”-style plan to make a quiet life for themselves and instead attempt to guide the girl from Mexico to Eden, a possibly fictional mutant haven in Canada. Of course, there’s a rather large country in the way that isn’t inclined to welcome their group with open arms, even when their kind
includes a small child fleeing unimaginable danger. “Logan” is a movie about many things, including stabbing a lot of people in a lot of places, but at its core beats an aging heart. Logan’s superhealing powers aren’t as super. His attacks are slower; getting hit hurts more. And, yes, he needs those reading glasses (which he wears with the price tag still on). At the same time, Professor Xavier is sliding into dementia — and what you don’t want is a superpowered psionic mutant getting scared and confused. So he’s in a safe place, cared for but isolated for his protection and that of others. I have not yet had to deal with watching one of my parents get old; my father died at
‘Logan’ (R, 137 min.) DIRECTOR: James Mangold STARS: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen IN A NUTSHELL: In the near future, a weary Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are upended by the arrival of a young mutant being pursued by dark forces.

60 and my mom, ridiculously healthy at 68, can definitely beat up your mom. But I see new worries coming to my friends, and I can’t pretend those same worries aren’t a possibility for me. Downsizing the house, dealing with Medicare, discussions about “what Mom would want.” Then choosing the hymns, scattering the ashes and fighting with my sisters about who has to take this godawful picture Mom has hanging in the downstairs bathroom. Logan is starting to see the same kind of worries. His quest forces him to examine his past and his legacy, and how choices are different when yesterdays begin to outnumber tomorrows. He’s no longer a member of a team or part of a family — he’s the leader and the head, and that means he has to balance the needs of the young and the needs of the old, and take just enough care of himself so he can care for others. The story is about three characters with profound superpowers, but in the end it’s fundamentally human. Read Kristen’s musings on movies each week in Express.

After WWII, thousands of German POWs — many of them teens — were kept in Denmark to remove millions of Nazi-laid mines. This Oscar-nominated Danish film follows one such group. As their leader (Roland Moller) moves from hostility to wary affection, he must send boys into a battle where the enemy lies under every step. Gripping, tense and complex, “Land” is about everything war leaves behind. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
‘The Shack’ PG-13, 132 min.
Based on the 2007 Christian novel by William P. Young, “The Shack” tells the story of a grieving man (Sam Worthington) who receives an invitation to meet with God (Octavia Spencer) in person. It captures the meat of Young’s text, focusing on the didactic aspects of its premise, but its promise of big answers to big questions falls short. ALAN ZILBERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Before I Fall’ makes its own type of teen movie FILM REVIEW
Don’t expect a real rom-com at ‘Table 19’
important things come into focus in sequences that director Ry Russo-Young stages with swiftness and verve. “Before I Fall” checks all the boxes as an entertaining, if perhaps painfully obvious, tutorial in why, as one minor but pivotal character says, “High school is just a blip.” The filmmakers have crafted a canny delivery system for their life lessons, by way of a movie that balances escapism, candor and ethics with admirable aplomb. ANN HORNADAY
“Table 19” has all the rom-com ingredients: a brokenhearted woman, a nightmare wedding and a charming stranger. Anna Kendrick plays Eloise, a friend of the bride and an ex-girlfriend of the best man. Thus, Eloise is assigned to table 19 amid other castoffs. Then she meets Huck (Thomas Cocquerel), who seems to be her ticket to a happy ending. Then the story takes some sharp turns, revealing that it isn’t a rom-com after all, but a shambling drama with mildly amusing pratfalls. STEPHANIE MERRY

OPEN ROAD FILMS
FILM REVIEW If “Before I Fall” were an elevator pitch, it would be a cross between “Groundhog Day” and “If I Stay.” It also shares strands of DNA with such teen-angst classics as “Carrie” and “Mean Girls,” as well as the more recent coming-of-age parables “Diary of a Teenage Girl” and “The Edge of Seventeen.” At the same time, this confident, tonally on-point adaptation of Lauren Oliver’s 2010 young-adult novel manages to carve out territory all its own. In “Before I Fall,” Zoey Deutch plays Samantha, a pretty, wellliked high school student who, on one of the most auspicious days of her life, meets with a tragic end. Except it isn’t an end, exactly. In the kind of alternate universe that makes such parables as “A Christmas Carol” possible, Sam winds up reliving the last day of her life every day for a week. She isn’t accompanied on her supernatural journey by an angel — although by the time she’s learned the requisite lessons about life, love and kindness, the better angels of her nature have made their presence felt.

@FATMEH32 tweeting about the first-ever cover of Vogue Arabia, which
features supermodel Gigi Hadid wearing a hijab. Some Muslim women on Twitter argued that Hadid — who is half-Palestinian but not Muslim — was appropriating Muslim culture. “They couldn’t find a single hijabwearing Muslim woman to grace the cover?” @eemanabbasi asked. Muslim journalist Eman Bare, on the other hand, applauded the choice of a well-known model. “Those who hate immigrants or hate Muslims don’t realize that the people they dehumanize make up the fabric of their society,” she wrote for teenvogue.com.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

We’ve all dated a John Mellencamp John Mellencamp revealed Wednesday that he doesn’t have a great relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Meg Ryan. “Oh, women hate me,” the musician told Howard Stern. “I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death.” He said that although he’s tried to make amends with the actress, whom he dated for three years until 2014, she “doesn’t want anything to do with” him. And apparently Meg isn’t the only woman who doesn’t care for him. “I think it’s because I’m a child,” Mellencamp mused. “I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I’m moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that’s me.” (EXPRESS)
