Motorists in Asheville, N.C., who tried scanning their parking tickets with a smartphone ended up getting “rickrolled.” The code on the fake tickets pulled up a music video for Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Tricking someone into having that video pop up is known as rickrolling. The tickets, which appeared Friday, were clearly fake, officials said. The tickets were for $100. The city’s normal parking fine is $10. (AP)

situations that dictate decisions must be made on the fly.” On Monday, a Facebook page calling for the firefighters to be reinstated had 7,500 likes and the mayor of a town close to the firehouse — who was not involved in the decision — said she had received critical emails from all over the country. Both Kelley, a paid D.C.

firefighter, and Bloom are part of the Falmouth fire department, a mostly volunteer firehouse that is overseen by Stafford County’s professional fire chief. In a sign that tension still exists, Lockhart said Monday that he had offered to meet with the Falmouth station’s chief and the previously suspended firefighters but they declined. “I’m just happy to be back in the firehouse and run calls,” Kelley said by phone from the firehouse Monday evening, at the start of a shift. He said supporters had planned to hold a rally at the firehouse Monday. Lockhart said the reason the incident came under review was because it was “highly unusual” to transport a patient in a firetruck. “The care provided to the patient was not the question,” he said. “Our focus has been on the decision to transport the patient in the firetruck.” Lena’s father said Sunday that Kelley and Bloom “simply had the best interests of our daughter’s care in mind,” and called them “heroes.” SHAWN BOBURG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

VIRGINIA Two volunteer firefighters in Stafford County put on leave for transporting a gravely ill toddler to a hospital in a firetruck — instead of waiting for an ambulance — were reinstated Monday, a day after their story unleashed a wave of criticism. The temporary suspension of the two firefighters, who were lauded by the family of the 18-month-old girl, Lena Nunamaker, came to symbolize a slavish adherence to bureaucratic guidelines over decisive action during an emergency. But Stafford County officials said in a hastily called news conference Monday that they were reinstating Capt. James Kelley and Sgt. Virgil Bloom to the Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department. The county’s fire chief, Mark Lockhart, said a review of the Feb. 27 incident found the firefighters did not follow department protocol, but conceded “there are

Red Line to get cell service first Metro working to make calls, Internet accessible in all tunnels in 5 years TRANSPORTATION This time, if Metro succeeds in its long-troubled, now-revived plan to bring cell service to subway tunnels, Red Line commuters will be the first ones able to chat on smartphones, send and receive emails and texts, and surf the Web while riding underground, according to the transit official in charge of the project. Kevin J. Borek, the agency’s chief of information technology, added that passengers everywhere in Metro’s 100-plus

miles of tunnels should have cell service within five years. “And we’re hoping for better than that,” he said in an interview. A week after Metro announced the resurrection of an eight-yearold project that fell dormant long ago and seemed terminally fouled up, Borek voiced optimism about its future, saying that Metro this summer will announce “a rollout” timetable for making cell service available along the subterranean stretches of all six rail lines. He also discussed the tangled evolution of a project that initially had been a sweet deal for Metro, with a consortium of four cellular carriers agreeing in 2008 to pay for and oversee

“I think it’s safe to say that we would not ever get cell service in our tunnels if we hadn’t decided to do it in this fashion.” KEVIN J. BOREK, Metro’s chief of information technology, on the agency’s new plan to build and pay for most of its new cellular infrastructure itself

the installation of cell cables throughout the tunnel network. At the same time, at almost no cost to Metro, the carriers were

to have installed miles of radio cables, allowing the agency to upgrade its emergency communications system. Now, under the new plan, Metro will string the cell and radio cables along its tunnel walls and will pay the “vast majority” of the estimated $120 million cost, Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said. He said the consortium of four carriers — Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and TMobile — will foot only a small fraction of the bill. “I think it’s safe to say that we would not ever get cell service in our tunnels if we hadn’t decided to do it in this fashion,” Borek said. local TRANSPORTATION After a year of labor-relations skirmishes, dozens of District streetcar workers voted Friday to join the union that represents thousands of Metro employees. The vote came just days after the District’s fledgling streetcar system started carrying passengers for the first time. The Amalgamated Transit Union had first planned to hold a union election early last year, but a group of operators were fired shortly before the scheduled vote. The union accused streetcar operations contractor RDMT and

staffing agency Midtown Group of unfair labor practices, arguing in an action it brought before the National Labor Relations Board that the companies had fired the employees to stymie their union organizing effort. But the labor relations board concluded in December that streetcar operators had violated a no-cellphone-use policy and that their firings were legal. The board also found that two fired streetcar employees who damaged a streetcar while moving it in the maintenance yard had “failed to follow proper procedure.”

REPUBLICAN

POLITICS Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday that he will not run for president as an independent — a move that would have roiled this year’s already extraordinarily unpredictable presidential campaign. The billionaire, who has spent months mulling a third-party run, made his decision official through an editorial posted by the Bloomberg View, writing that he believes his candidacy would send the race to the Republicancontrolled House of Representatives and would likely lead to the election of Donald Trump

Bloomberg was blistering in his critique of Trump, currently the GOP front-runner, saying the real estate mogul has run “the most divisive and demagogic presidential campaign I can remember, preying on people’s prejudices and fears.” He was similarly critical of

Cruz, saying the Texas senator’s “pandering on immigration may lack Trump’s rhetorical excess, but it is no less extreme.” The former mayor said that Trump’s campaign “appeals to our worst impulses.” “We cannot ‘make America great again’ by turning our backs on the values that made us the world’s greatest nation in the first place,” Bloomberg wrote. “I love our country too much to play a role in electing a candidate who would weaken our unity and darken our future — and so I will not enter the race for president of the United States.” Bloomberg made only an oblique reference Democrats Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders and did not endorse a candidate. Boeing engineers have patented a solution for grimy airplane bathrooms: ultraviolet light. The UV light would clean the toilet seat, sink and countertop in an unoccupied lavatory in three seconds between uses. Boeing plans to use Far UV, which it says is not harmful to people. The design also incorporates a hands-free faucet, soap dispenser, trash flap, and toilet lid and seat to decrease the number of surfaces passengers touch. Boeing is working on a hands-free door latch, too. But as with many patents, the technology will take time to perfect, and once offered to airlines, it could take years for a carrier to update its fleet. (AP)

About 90 percent of government revenues come from oil. European Union leaders tussled with Turkey in meetings that lasted until midnight Monday, trying to decide how to control the flow of asylum-seekers from the Middle East. Pyongyang threatens ‘deadly blows’ over joint U.S., S. Korea drills TOKYO The United States and South Korea kicked off major military exercises on Monday, including rehearsals of surgical strikes on North Korea’s main nuclear and missile facilities and “decapitation raids” by special forces targeting the North’s leadership. The drills always elicit an angry response from Pyongyang, but Monday’s statement was particularly ferocious, accusing the U.S. and South Korea of planning a “beheading operation” aimed at removing Kim Jong Un’s regime. The North Korean army and people “will take military counteraction for preemptive attack so that they may deal merciless deadly blows at the enemies,” the North’s National Defense Commission said in a statement. “If we push the buttons to annihilate the enemies even right now, all bases of provocations will be reduced to seas in flames and ashes in a moment,” the statement read. The exercises come at a particularly tense time, with the international community — especially the U.S. and South Korea — looking to punish Pyongyang for

Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last month, was a force in the Supreme Court’s conservative wing.

The loss of Scalia has changed the high court in substance and style SUPREME COURT The late justice Byron White is credited with the observation that the addition of a new justice to the Supreme Court creates a completely new body that is different in dynamics and practice from its predecessor. Last week showed that the same can be true of a loss. With Justice Antonin Scalia’s chair empty and draped in mourning black — the court’s booming conservative voice silenced — the Supreme Court, now with only eight members, seemed transformed in substance and style. Start with the obvious: On Feb. 29, Justice Clarence Thomas shocked the courtroom by asking a question during oral arguments, the first time he had done so in 10 years. He was defending gun rights, taking up the slack on an issue that he and his closest ally, Scalia, had declared was being treated too cavalierly. During Wednesday’s hearing on Texas’s abortion restrictions, it was the court’s four liberals who filled the space that Scalia left.

They dominated the session the way Scalia used to do when he cared passionately about a subject. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg all but commandeered the proceeding, ignoring Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.’s efforts to bring the interrogation to an end. That was a change in style, and there’s more to say about it. But there were also indications that without Scalia to shore up the court’s conservative wing, a shift in the court’s jurisprudence is underway as well. Dow Chemical, for instance, announced that it would settle a nearly $1 billion antitrust judgment instead of pursuing its plans to take the fight to the high court. “Growing political uncertainties due to recent events with the Supreme Court and increased likelihood for unfavorable outcomes for business involved in class-action suits have changed Dow’s risk assessment of the situation,” the company said. The standoff between President Barack Obama and Senate Republicans about a replacement for Scalia could mean an eightmember court for at least a year. A flurry of 4-to-4 decisions might blunt the court’s influence and

Holding court at only 8 Obama might nominate judge with a low profile President Obama is said to be considering five relatively new federal judges for nomination to the Supreme Court, focusing on jurists with scant discernible ideology and limited judicial records as part of a strategy to surmount Republican opposition. He is believed to favor a federal judge confirmed by the Senate with bipartisan support during his tenure. Candidates under consideration include two judges who joined the influential U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2013, Sri Srinivasan and Patricia A. Millett; Jane L. Kelly, an Iowan appointed that year to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit; Paul J. Watford, a judge since 2012 on the California-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit; and a lower-court judge, Ketanji Brown Jackson, appointed in 2013 to the U.S. District Court for D.C. postpone controversial decisions. But in Wednesday’s abortioncase hearing, it was hard not to sense a different court. Thomas asked no questions, and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy appeared to be the undecided man in the middle. So it fell on only two justices — Roberts and Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. — to make the conservative case for upholding the challenged Texas provisions. Texas says concern for patient health led to the requirements that clinic doctors have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and that the clinics meet the high standards of surgical centers. The clinics argued that the requirements are medically unnecessary and that they are a pretext for closing clinics. When it was Texas Solicitor General Scott A. Keller’s turn at the microphone, Justices Stephen G. Breyer and Elena Kagan joined Sotomayor and Ginsburg in a pummeling. Sotomayor was particularly blunt. At one point, Kennedy leaned over to Roberts and said, “Sonia is off.” That can be taken two ways. But in the context of the day, it seems the most likely interpretation is “off and running.” ROBERT BARNES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It also seems like the sort of economically stressed state in which Trump might do well, but according to the most recent Census Bureau data, in states where the poverty level increased between 2011 and 2013, Trump wins by 10 points. In states where it decreased, like Michigan, he loses by an average 1.5. The state also sits at a weird spot geographically. Trump has lost contests in nearby Minnesota and Iowa, though those were caucuses. He won in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. It’s probably safer to assume that the voters in Michigan would act more like those voters than Iowa caucus-goers. Michigan will be a test — a state that’s at about the middle of the pack economically and at about the middle of the race so far geographically. If Trump holds on at or near the level of the polls, it will suggest that Ted Cruz’s surge and Trump’s failure to turn out voters was limited in scope. If Trump wins narrowly — or loses — it will mean that his leads aren’t safe — even in states that seem like the ones that make up the core of his base of support. PHILIP BUMP

Who’s not returning?

Once more, icon displays great timing NFL His voice cracking with emotion, Peyton Manning said goodbye Monday to the game he loved at a news conference packed with friends, family and laughter. He threw in some Scripture, some fond memories and even a dig at Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller, whom he thanked for taking a break “from your celebrity tour to be here today.” He ended it with his signature “Omaha!” and then posed for pictures with more than a dozen of his former teammates with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, each of whom he helped win a Super Bowl. Manning, who turns 40 on March 24, said it was time to end his 18-year NFL career. “I thought about it a lot, prayed about it a lot,” he said at Broncos headquarters. “I don’t throw

and worked his way back into the starting lineup. Manning choked up several times Monday, especially when he listed all the things he’d miss. “I will even miss the Patriots fans in Foxborough,” he said. Manning was linked this fall in a media report to HGH use. There also have been recent reports of a sexual harassment claim against him from his days at Tennessee. He was asked about the latter topic Monday. “This is a joyous day and nothing could overtake this day,” he said. “I did not do what has been alleged. And I am not interested in re-litigating something that happened when I was 19 years old.” (AP/EXPRESS)

It’s morphing into a whole new world of possibilities.” He came to Denver on March 20, 2012, for the chance to win another title in the twilight of his career, and general manager John Elway had the blueprints. Four years later, Manning hobbles away a champion just as his boss did 17 years ago. Elway thanked Manning for coming to Colorado for the second chapter of his brilliant career, saying he made his own job easier, noting that with Manning aboard, free agents basically asked Elway, “Where do I sign?” Manning went 50-15 in Denver, leading the Broncos to four AFC West titles, two Super Bowls and one championship. In 2013 he guided the highest-scoring offense in league history. And he

Defensive end Chris Long is scheduled to visit the Redskins today, according to a source. Long, who will turn 31 this month, was cut by the Rams in February after spending eight seasons with the organization. The Redskins were tied for 14th with 38 sacks last year and will look to retool their defensive line this offseason. Long, who was the second overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, has 54 ½ career sacks but has struggled to stay healthy. Sharapova fails drug test

Start times of semifinals will be earlier this year

Beal won’t play tonight, but he could be back soon

The College Football Playoff semifinals are staying on New Year’s Eve — despite last season’s poor TV ratings — but the schedule is getting a tweak. The Dec. 31 semifinals will start at 3 and 7 p.m. — an hour earlier than they did last season — and the Orange Bowl will now be played in prime time on Friday, Dec. 30, instead of during the day on Dec. 31. (AP)

Bradley Beal didn’t travel to Portland with the Wizards on Monday and has been ruled out for tonight’s game against the Trail Blazers because of a bruised pelvis. But he could rejoin the Wizards in Utah and play against the Jazz on Friday, according to sources. The guard sustained the injury in Saturday’s loss to the Pacers. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Maria Sharapova’s tennis career and Olympic hopes are in jeopardy, and she claims it’s all because she failed to click on a link in an email that would have told her to stop taking meldonium. She says she failed a doping test at the Australian Open in January for the little-known drug, which became banned this year. Sharapova took full responsibility Monday in Los Angeles. “I know that with this, I face consequences,” said Sharapova, who could face a lengthy ban. “I don’t want to end my career this way, and I really hope I will be given another chance to play this game.” (AP)

QB hurt in a big win

Was he OK to play?

For the rights to draft the Heismanwinning quarterback out of Baylor with the No. 2 pick, the Redskins traded the Rams the No. 6 pick in the 2012 draft, a 2012 secondround pick, and first-round picks in 2013 and 2014. It was a hefty price, but the QB-hungry franchise was willing to pay up to get its guy.

In his first NFL game, Griffin completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns in New Orleans, leading the Redskins to a 40-32 win over a Saints team that went 13-3 the year before. The Redskins, coming off four straight last-place finishes, couldn’t have been more pleased with the debut.

Could Griffin have had a better rookie year? He led the NFL in yards per pass and yards per rush in 2012 — winning the rookie of the year award over Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson. Against the Eagles on Nov. 18, 2012, Griffin went 14-for-15 for 200 yards, four TDs and a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

A 31-28 overtime victory over the Ravens was tainted by Griffin being helped off the field with a sprained right knee. Kirk Cousins came in late to rally the Redskins from an eight-point deficit in the final seconds, but the main focus after the game was the health of Griffin, who tore his ACL in college.

Griffin led the Redskins to their first NFC East title in 13 years, but was the hobbled QB healthy enough to make his home playoff debut against Seattle? Griffin played and in the fourth quarter his knee buckled as he tried to field a low snap. The Redskins lost and Griffin tore his ACL and LCL.

Another bad season

Evaluating a trade

Losing his starting job

Griffin was determined to get back on the field by Week 1 of the 2013 season. ESPN even had a documentary about his rehab titled “RGIII: The Will to Win.” Despite not taking one preseason snap, Griffin started the opener, which the Redskins lost 33-27 at home to the Eagles.

The 2013 season didn’t go as planned for Griffin or the Redskins. A loss to the Eagles on Nov. 17 dropped Washington to 3-7. Griffin continued to struggle until thencoach Mike Shanahan benched him for the final three games of the season, citing the QB’s long-term health as the reason for sitting him.

Griffin had a healthy offseason, but he couldn’t stay on the field in 2014. After the Redskins opened with a 17-6 loss to the Texans, Griffin dislocated his ankle in the first quarter of the second game of the season. He played in just nine games in 2014, throwing four touchdowns to six interceptions.

After Griffin was benched for a second straight season, this time by first-year coach Jay Gruden, it seemed his days in D.C. were numbered. But who would want a battered QB two years removed from his one good season? It turns out that team was the Redskins, who picked up his option.

In February, Gruden declared Griffin would be the Redskins’ starting QB to open the 2015 season … then the coach changed his mind. Before Week 1, Gruden said this was Kirk Cousins’ team now, and Griffin fell all the way to third-string duties. He was active only one game all year.

STUDIES SHOW ...

The brain’s tastiest drug Does sugar’s hold on humans and food make it an impossible habit to kick? NUTRITION By now you’ve gotten the memo that cutting back on sugar is one of the best things you can do for your health. Beyond adding empty calories and spiking blood glucose, which can contribute to weight gain, eating sugar dramatically increases your risk of dying from a heart attack. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2014 found that people who ate close to 20 percent of their daily calories from added sugar had a 38 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease than those who ate half as much. (This means added, refined sugar here — the concentrated sweetener put into foods, as opposed to the sugars inherent in whole fruits and dairy.) If you’ve been convinced that you need to cut back on added sweeteners, you may have discovered that sugar has an unexpected hold on you and that you can’t seem to resist it. The game is rigged in sugar’s favor for three main reasons: We are born to like it, it is everywhere and it is addictive.

Humans have an inborn preference for sweet. We taste sugar and our pleasure sensors fire like crazy. When our ancestors were running around in loincloths, that genetic predisposition helped them survive, as sweet foods provided a valuable source of energy and were less likely to be poisonous than bitter foods. Now, sugar is everywhere. It’s in the obvious places such as candy, cookies and soda, but it’s also in cereal, yogurt, bread, crackers, dressings, condiments and prepared meals. Our ancestors might find it odd that now we have to hunt to find a food that doesn’t have added sugar. You’d have to be a sleuth to uncover added sugars on food labels; they are not listed separately but lumped together with sugar inherent in food, so labels make plain milk and fruit unfairly seem “sugary.” (Listing added sugars separately is a proposed change for the upcoming revision of the nutrition facts label.) And sugar has many guises, among them agave syrup, brown sugar, cane sugar, corn syrup, evaporated cane juice,

The number of calories of sugar — nearly 17 teaspoons — Americans are downing daily. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that added sugar be capped at 10 percent of your daily calories, or roughly no more than 12 ½ teaspoons (50 grams) of sugar daily. (TWP)

fructose, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, malt syrup, maple syrup, molasses, raw sugar, sucrose, syrup and more. On top of that, research reveals that sugar is addictive in the same way drugs are. Several animal studies show that sugar stimulates the brain and causes dependence and withdrawal. But you don’t have to shun sugar altogether. Here are several strategies for getting the upper hand on the sweet stuff:

Be a teetotaler (almost) Aim for no more than 10 teaspoons (40 grams) of sugar a day. Stick to minimally processed whole foods.

Cooking more at home will make it much easier to keep track. When buying packaged foods, read the label carefully.

Use sugar strategically Use your sugar budget to make healthy foods tastier, such as adding maple syrup to your oatmeal, or honey to plain yogurt or tart fruits. Buy plain, unsweetened foods and add sweetener in minimum amounts yourself so you are in control of it. Skip the 12-ounce soda, sweet tea, lemonade or energy drink in favor of water, enhanced with a splash of fruit juice if you want more flavor.

Indulge healthfully If you have a hankering for something sweet, go for fresh or dried fruit. Try slicing apples or pears and sprinkling them with cinnamon to enhance their sweetness, or drizzle a bit of honey over some fresh berries.

Research shows that emojis can be an effective way to encourage healthful eating among kids. In a recent study published in the journal Appetite, researchers found that children were more likely to make healthy food choices when shelves were labeled with “emolabels” almost identical to the ones on our smartphones. In the study, 64 children from kindergarten through sixth grade were given a brief lesson on how to interpret the emojis (smiley face = healthy, frowning face = unhealthy) and then asked to walk through an area set up to resemble a grocery store and select four food items from each of two aisles. In one aisle, 12 foods were “emolabeled” with stickers. The other aisle was identical, but without labels. In the emoji aisle, 83 percent of students switched one of their food choices to a healthy food option. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Reward yourself Create a reward system that incentivizes eating less sugar. Put the money you would have spent on pastries or soda into a jar and treat yourself to something special at the end of the week. ELLIE KRIEGER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

I’m done with the office mean girls Q. I am the only male in an office with four women. Two of them are snakes in disguise. They talk about each other to me and then team up against me, whispering like high school girls. I think they feel threatened by my abilities. Now I ignore them — one I say “Morning” to, the other nothing. I’ve said, “If I’ve done something hurtful, let me know.” How does one deal? TRUE PROFESSIONAL HERE I sympathize, yet wonder if you’re fanning the flames. Avoiding even saying “Good morning” to one of them belies the mature, let’s-start-fresh attitude you claim to want to espouse. Yes, they may be snakes, “mean girls” or any other terms you can throw at them. But baseline civility is your best defense, and what a true professional would do — even if

you’d rather gargle with toner — is start each day with a clean slate, rather than with what can be seen as an aggressive act. No one’s going to give these women awards for character, and they’ll likely bring themselves down before anyone else needs to. Throwing accelerant on the situation will only make you more likely to be a casualty along their way.

Indeed, you have some difficult decisions to make, and you likely have had years of poor treatment that impacts your ability to make them. My telling you to get professional support may seem like the advice columnist’s cop-out card, but it is by far the best way for you to start figuring this out. Should you take steps to leave, and when and how should it happen? How extreme is her behavior? How entangled are you? How can you protect yourself emotionally, financially and physically in the process? If there’s pushback from family or friends, how will you counteract it and get through to them? entertainment MUSIC REVIEW Few have questioned Kendrick Lamar’s infallibility over the last three years. His 2015 album, “To Pimp A Butterfly,” nabbed five Grammys, unanimous critical raves and instant induction into hip-hop’s pantheon for its sprawling ambition, virtuous musicianship and trenchant racial insight. But it sometimes felt indulgent, contrived and devoid of the stark clarity and concise songwriting that made his 2012 debut, “good kid, m.A.A.d city,” so compelling. The semi-sequel to “TPAB” — called “untitled unmastered.” — appeared suddenly, landing online in Friday’s earliest hours.

Lamar tweeted that these new songs are demos from “TPAB” — “In Raw Form.Unfinished. Untitled. Unmastered.” Calling this “unfinished” is a partial red herring. These tracks might not be as fully conceptualized as most of “TPAB,” but they’re far more than fragmentary shards. While each is labeled with an alleged date of recording, it’s unclear exactly when they were made. Certain lyrics point toward this album having been tinkered with up until its surprise release. This is the loosest and most playful Lamar has been since his earliest work. Would adding these songs have improved

“TPAB”? They’re of similar design, but cut from a different cloth. None of them are hits in waiting. The hooks are mostly nonexistent, but everything flows effortlessly. Like its antecedent, “untitled unmastered.” is an anti-capitalist, anti-racist, spiritual quest for self. It’s filled with soliloquies to God and second-guessing examinations in the mirror. If “TPAB’s” general instinct was leaden sermonizing, “untitled unmastered.” conveys its message through simpler parables and anecdotes. It suggests that the best way to be deep is by not trying to be deep. JEFF WEISS

Quiet defiance marked style of Nancy Reagan FASHION Nancy Reagan was more than her signature color red. She brought a love for fashion, a recognition of style and a delight in beauty into the White House at a time when it had long been pushed aside. Reagan indulged in fashion — not politically vetted, blandly uninspired, Jane Doe fashion but the truly dazzling variety. She wore Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass and James Galanos. A woman of her age and position didn’t bother with trends; she cultivated style. There was the 1981 Galanos inaugural gown — a one-shoulder white sheath that glittered with crystals. It was surprisingly bare for a first lady and it was decidedly glamorous. Ushering this sort of fashion into the White House was an act of great risk and little reward. Her public presentation had an unmarred sheen that was sometimes derided as too plastic, too brittle. Yet Reagan made space for a first lady to publicly enjoy fashion and not treat it like a chore to be endured. Having turned 60 just after moving into the White House, she was an older woman who did not succumb to the idea that she had aged out of the fashion system. She was proudly, defiantly vain at a time — even more than now — when all corners of popular culture declared that women her age didn’t or shouldn’t care about how they looked. “Whatever you’ve done to improve your production processes clearly isn’t working.” LISA ALLEN STURGIS, commenter at facebook.com, complains about finding mold in GoGo Squeez, a popular snack for kids. The brand issued a recall of some of its products Monday. But infuriated parents said they have complained about the mold for months. This is GoGo Squeez’s second recall in less than six months.

“Downton finale; Dowager Countess wakes up next to Dumbledore and it was all a dream.” @PLANETWEBBER throws out a funny alternate ending to the

“Downton Abbey” series finale. While the U.K. said goodbye to the series in December, the U.S. got its farewell Sunday night. Despite fans throwing out hilarious alternate endings, (*spoiler alert*!) the PBS period drama ended with generally happy endings — even Lady Edith finally got a break after six seasons of suffering.

“You mean I can’t download wnload illegal pirated content without running the risk of infecting my machine!?!?!”

8SEABASS, commenter at cbssports.com, on the heroic fan who saved his son from being struck with a bat during a Pittsburgh Pirates spring training game Saturday. The father reached out and blocked the bat from hitting his son right in the head. The boy was looking down at a phone.

NINJAGINGA, commenter at cnet.com, on the

first known ransomware spotted on a Mac. Ransomware is a cyber threat that encrypts data on machines and asks users to pay ransoms to get an online key to retrieve their data. Palo Alto Networks said on Sunday that hackers infected Macs through a tainted copy of torrenting program Transmission. Apple has shut down the ransomware, called KeRanger.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Your ability to skate over troubling issues may make you feel good in the moment, but it can actually compound your problems. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You have much to do to prepare yourself for a coming challenge, but fortunately you are well aware of what may actually happen. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You feel the support of those who believe in you, and you can carry that support with you into all you undertake. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You needn’t be so cryptic or metaphorical; try to say what you mean in the simplest and most direct manner possible. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may be counting down the minutes until a change occurs that opens up many new doors for you. It’s time to consider all options.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may not be eager to go where someone else is telling you to go, but you know that you must go there in order to fulfill a certain promise. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You know what is expected of you, without a doubt — and that’s exactly what’s worrying you. Don’t fear!

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

TODAY: Under a mix of sun and clouds, the warming air mass lifts temperatures toward 70 degrees. Expect the masses to flock outside at lunch. Winds from the southwest remain light. As the feed of subtropical air continues to strengthen, it’s unseasonably mild overnight, with lows in the upper 40s to the mid-50s.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’re seeking more than the easy way out. Indeed, you want to learn something from the dilemma in which you find yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may find that doing a certain thing the old-fashioned way leads you nowhere. Update your thinking.

Kensington Palace on Monday released photos of Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge and their children George, 2 ½, and 10-month-old Charlotte on a ski holiday in the French Alps. The palace says it was “their first holiday as a family of four and the first time either of the children had played in the snow.” The release of the pictures follows a media policy established when William and his brother, Prince Harry, were children: privacy in exchange for agreed-upon photo opportunities at birthdays and during school holidays.
